- 0:32Speaker 1: and Laura Muscari. This is a 10 round quiz show
- 0:36Speaker 1: with questions from Meat Eaters four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and cooking. Meat Eater trivia is brought to you by
- 0:45Speaker 1: one of our favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light, head
- 0:49Speaker 1: for the mountains. All right, we're gonna start off today
- 0:52Speaker 1: with a mailbag question. If you have a question, You
- 0:56Speaker 1: want the trivia crew to answer, then send your question
- 0:58Speaker 1: with the subject line mailbag to trivia at themeateater.com. Brett R.
- 1:05Speaker 1: wrote in to ask.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Brent or Brett?
- 1:08Speaker 1: Brett.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Two Ts.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I have a bit of hunting, bit of a hunting
- 1:13Speaker 1: fishing predicament that I need some advice on. My dad
- 1:16Speaker 1: was the one who got me into hunting and fishing,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and I have since passed that on to my daughter.
- 1:22Speaker 1: The issues we are having are... When we plan a trip,
- 1:26Speaker 1: my dad goes over the top with everything. Overpacking, knows
- 1:30Speaker 1: everything about everything, and always corrects my daughter. And from trying...
- 1:36Speaker 1: Not always the best writing here. Whoa! Can we cut that, Phil?
- 1:42Speaker 1: I'm going to keep that one in.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Um.
- 1:47Speaker 1: He's trying to correct his daughter from trying new things
- 1:49Speaker 1: in new places. He's, like, limiting her experience. It's kind
- 1:53Speaker 1: of making hunting and fishing with him unbearable. My daughter
- 1:56Speaker 1: doesn't really get excited anymore about them, which is crushing me.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Her and I will plan a trip, then he invites
- 2:02Speaker 1: himself and, for lack of better terms, ruins it. I'd
- 2:05Speaker 1: appreciate some advice on how to approach this subject with him. Man.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Tricky.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Just have some.
- 2:13Speaker 5: father-daughter trips like he doesn't the granddaddy doesn't need to
- 2:17Speaker 5: go on every trip that's a good one and then
- 2:20Speaker 5: just like have like so we have a grandfather trip
- 2:24Speaker 5: and you're just like daughter you're just gonna have to
- 2:28Speaker 5: suck it up for a couple days i know it's
- 2:30Speaker 5: rough but so when.
- 2:31Speaker 1: You make the one that's only the dad daughter and
- 2:34Speaker 1: then grandpa comes in he's like hey uh, I'm bringing
- 2:38Speaker 1: the camper and I've got Friday night dinner covered.
- 2:40Speaker 5: I would explain to him that, look, I just want
- 2:43Speaker 5: some kind of quality time with, with my daughter.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Anybody else?
- 2:48Speaker 6: I think I would just have a honest conversation with
- 2:50Speaker 6: dad in a nice way, like a little compliment sandwich,
- 2:54Speaker 6: maybe in there.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Like, I love hanging out with you.
- 2:56Speaker 6: And hunting and sharing this time with our, with my daughter,
- 2:58Speaker 6: but here's a couple of things we've noticed. And, you know,
- 3:02Speaker 6: hopefully you've got a good enough relationship with your dad.
- 3:04Speaker 6: You can have that, uh, That'd be okay.
- 3:08Speaker 5: His dad is probably just super excited to be involved
- 3:11Speaker 5: and he's overdoing it, you know?
- 3:14Speaker 4: Just tell him you want her to figure out some
- 3:16Speaker 4: stuff on her own.
- 3:18Speaker 7: And I think the dad should acknowledge with the daughter, like, hey,
- 3:21Speaker 7: I see this is happening too. I know that sucks
- 3:23Speaker 7: for you. I can tell that's no fun. Like, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 7: I'm sorry it's that way. It's just like, Granddad is
- 3:30Speaker 7: just that excited to hang out with us. And we'll
- 3:33Speaker 7: try to correct that in the future. And like, you're
- 3:36Speaker 7: not doing anything wrong. It's not on you. I think
- 3:39Speaker 7: that would go.
- 3:39Speaker 3: A long ways too.
- 3:40Speaker 7: If you were like, hey, I'm also seeing that this
- 3:42Speaker 7: is happening. I'm sorry for that.
- 3:44Speaker 3: You know what?
- 3:45Speaker 6: If Spencer would ever, you know, level up from cats,
- 3:47Speaker 6: I think you'd be a great dad.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I know.
- 3:49Speaker 2: That's what I tell him.
- 3:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:51Speaker 1: You got to hold the faith, Spencer.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Too selfish though.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Anybody else want to add to this?
- 3:58Speaker 4: I just think you could, you could even say one
- 4:00Speaker 4: of the things I most appreciated about our time hunting
- 4:03Speaker 4: when I was young was you let me figure things
- 4:06Speaker 4: out on my own dad. And I don't want us
- 4:10Speaker 4: to like do everything for so-and-so daughter.
- 4:14Speaker 6: But then he's going to say, well, now I know
- 4:16Speaker 6: you're lying through your teeth because I never let you
- 4:18Speaker 6: figure things out for yourself.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Well, it sounds like this isn't how he always was,
- 4:22Speaker 4: you know? Hmm.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Right, because Brett had a good hunting upbringing. Yeah, he
- 4:27Speaker 1: loved it.
- 4:28Speaker 4: He loved it.
- 4:28Speaker 7: Man, I think we solved this one.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that was good. That was good. Laura, Matt?
- 4:34Speaker 8: I mean, I would just say like, it's a great
- 4:36Speaker 8: opportunity for a gentle reminder that some of the best
- 4:39Speaker 8: opportunities for learning are to make mistakes. Some of my
- 4:42Speaker 8: most fond memories were getting out with my dad. And
- 4:45Speaker 8: I just think it's, yeah, an opportunity to really tell
- 4:48Speaker 8: him like, hey, there's a time and a place. And
- 4:52Speaker 8: I like what Brody said. Sometimes just, head out on
- 4:55Speaker 8: your own trip.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Man yeah you guys are good because i would have
- 4:58Speaker 1: just taken it straight to chill the out man wow.
- 5:02Speaker 4: That's a good sense it makes it sound like it's
- 5:04Speaker 4: impossible to to get away i maybe you're over sharing
- 5:08Speaker 4: your plans i like to keep a bit of secrecy.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah you know you're right i do i kind of
- 5:15Speaker 1: share everything i got.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Going on tell them you're going to a like a
- 5:18Speaker 5: barbie doll convention or something yeah care just.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Why all right let's get on to the game the
- 5:24Speaker 1: jennifer index for today is a five oh all right
- 5:28Speaker 1: now that was with a little bit of help but
- 5:31Speaker 1: i gave her five it was like a four and
- 5:33Speaker 1: a half to five so our winner should could get
- 5:35Speaker 1: 10 correct answers putting us on perfect game alert and
- 5:39Speaker 1: with that we're on to the game of trivia play
- 5:43Speaker 1: the drop bill.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Look i need to know what i stand to win
- 5:49Speaker 4: to everything How's that? You just tend to win everything.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Game on, suckers! Sorry, I'm sending Spencer a note right
- 6:06Speaker 1: now on Slack.
- 6:07Speaker 7: Uh-oh.
- 6:08Speaker 1: As always, please help. The first question is multiple choice.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And this week, it's also our listener submitted question, which
- 6:16Speaker 1: was sent in by Brian Bierkley. Sorry if I mispronounced that, Brian.
- 6:20Speaker 1: For submitting this great question, Brian will receive a $ 150
- 6:24Speaker 1: gift card from First Light. If you want a chance
- 6:28Speaker 1: to win the listener question of the week, then send
- 6:29Speaker 1: your question to trivia at themeateater.com. The question is, what
- 6:37Speaker 1: animal did Steve hunt on the very first episode of
- 6:41Speaker 1: Meat Eater? Is it A, mountain goat, B, black bear, C,
- 6:48Speaker 1: black-tailed deer, or D, Brody, quick to answer. Randall's also writing.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Maybe he's drawing.
- 6:58Speaker 4: I'm drawing, yeah.
- 6:59Speaker 1: He's drawing the answer.
- 7:01Speaker 4: No, I'm drawing something unrelated to the answer. Okay. I
- 7:05Speaker 4: think it's a good question.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The question is, what animal did Steve hunt on the
- 7:09Speaker 1: very first episode of Meat Eater? A, mountain goat, B,
- 7:14Speaker 1: black bear, C, black-tailed deer, or D, javelina?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Do you guys watch this show?
- 7:22Speaker 3: No.
- 7:27Speaker 7: I don't care for it, but my wife, she loves
- 7:28Speaker 7: this show.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Just like Walking Dead. I watched the first two seasons,
- 7:32Speaker 3: then I was out.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer?
- 7:35Speaker 7: Did Steve get this one right, you think?
- 7:37Speaker 1: Probably not. Depends on if he's brought in so much
- 7:42Speaker 1: information that there's things kind of leaking out in the
- 7:45Speaker 1: back now, but I don't know. Guy's got kind of
- 7:47Speaker 1: a steel trap for a brain. Like you two as well.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Everybody have an answer? All right, go ahead and reveal
- 7:58Speaker 1: your answers, please. Randy says mountain goat, Mark, black-tailed deer, Spencer,
- 8:04Speaker 1: black-tailed Laura, mountain goat, Matt, black-tailed, Brody, black bear. The
- 8:09Speaker 1: correct answer is C, black-tailed deer. All right.
- 8:14Speaker 7: I thought Brody had that one.
- 8:16Speaker 1: In episode one of season one, Steve hunts black-tailed deer
- 8:20Speaker 1: on Prince of Wales Island. Episode two, he hunts black bears.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Well, that was the real thing.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Somewhere in Alaska. Mountain goats in episode four and javelina
- 8:30Speaker 1: in episode nine. I had nothing to do with producing
- 8:33Speaker 1: the first season. In season two, which was filmed 14
- 8:37Speaker 1: years ago, I helped on the dull sheep and caribou
- 8:40Speaker 1: hunts and the rest is history. There are 12 seasons
- 8:43Speaker 1: of Meat Eater available on YouTube right now, and it
- 8:46Speaker 1: is great entertainment to go back and watch the old ones.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I feel like we could actually rebrand it as Young
- 8:53Speaker 1: Meat Eater, because all of us look like kids in
- 8:55Speaker 1: those early episodes. All right, on to question two. This
- 9:02Speaker 1: is conservation. This bird, listed as vulnerable by the IUCN...
- 9:10Speaker 1: adorns the lid of the world's most famous shoe polish.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Huh.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Oh.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Man, I thought that this was going to be an
- 9:22Speaker 1: easy one.
- 9:23Speaker 5: I wish I was at home so I could check
- 9:26Speaker 5: my shoe polish.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Any of us own shoe polish?
- 9:29Speaker 4: No.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Randall keeps a ton of shoe polish in his pocket
- 9:31Speaker 3: at all times.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Oh, no, that's not a shoe polish.
- 9:36Speaker 7: Vulnerable.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I think I have some shoe polish.
- 9:40Speaker 6: No idea.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like... Well, I don't want to give
- 9:45Speaker 1: too many hints here. The room looks like they need hints.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I can see the thing in my head.
- 9:52Speaker 1: This bird, listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, adorns the
- 9:57Speaker 1: lid of the world's most famous shoe polish.
- 10:02Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 10:05Speaker 8: I can't even think of a vulnerable bird at the moment,
- 10:08Speaker 8: let alone shoe polish.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Jeez.
- 10:14Speaker 4: What a stumper.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Sorry, I was trying to pitch some softballs. This is
- 10:21Speaker 1: an easy one for old Jennifer Jones.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Why does she know this?
- 10:27Speaker 5: Because she polishes Janusz's shoes.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I do have a tin that I use usually once
- 10:35Speaker 1: a year when I go to the one wedding or
- 10:37Speaker 1: whatever function where I have to wear a suit and
- 10:40Speaker 1: a pair of shoes and I bust out the tin.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:44Speaker 3: He's got one of those high-raised chairs they have in
- 10:47Speaker 3: midtown from the 50s. He sits down, snaps Jennifer over.
- 10:52Speaker 1: My plan is always instead to bring my shoes through
- 10:56Speaker 1: the airport so I can actually get them shined up
- 10:59Speaker 1: by a professional.
- 11:01Speaker 7: You wouldn't even wear them on that trip. You would
- 11:03Speaker 7: just travel with them to get them polished.
- 11:06Speaker 4: No, no, no. That's one of those things when I
- 11:09Speaker 4: saw it as a kid, I thought, I'll do that
- 11:10Speaker 4: someday when I'm an adult. And look at you now.
- 11:14Speaker 4: No closer.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel so demeaning.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I do think I have some shoe polish in my
- 11:19Speaker 4: reloading cabinet.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Good place for shoe polish.
- 11:24Speaker 9: All right.
- 11:25Speaker 1: If you don't have an answer, you're just going to
- 11:26Speaker 1: have to show me a blank board. Go ahead and reveal.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Randall says emu. Mark, whooping crane. Spencer, pileated woodpecker. Laura, penguin. Matt, emu. Brody, flamingo. Folks,
- 11:40Speaker 1: that's a zero percenter. The answer is... Kiwi.
- 11:44Speaker 7: Oh!
- 11:44Speaker 2: I was gonna write Kiwi too, it's red.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Does that, now that I say it? I see it.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Can people see it? No.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I see it.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Kiwi shoe polish has been available in 180 countries and
- 11:55Speaker 1: accounts for half of the global shoe polish market. The
- 11:59Speaker 1: brand was started in 1906 by a Scottish-Australian who named
- 12:03Speaker 1: it after his wife, who was from New Zealand. The
- 12:06Speaker 1: Kiwi Dome Fern's long beak is a flightless bird about
- 12:09Speaker 1: the size of a chicken, but closely related to the ostrich.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It lays an egg that is one of the largest
- 12:15Speaker 1: in proportion to the bird itself, up to 25% of
- 12:19Speaker 1: the female size. That would be like a 150-pound woman
- 12:22Speaker 1: giving birth to a 37.5-pound baby.
- 12:25Speaker 7: Oh, that's great flavor text.
- 12:27Speaker 1: The Kiwis list is vulnerable, being upgraded from endangered in
- 12:31Speaker 1: 2017 due to recovery efforts. The main threats to kiwi
- 12:35Speaker 1: are predators such as stoats, dogs, and feral cats. Jennifer
- 12:38Speaker 1: and I spent five weeks in New Zealand in 2005
- 12:40Speaker 1: on our honeymoon and did not see a kiwi, but
- 12:43Speaker 1: we did meet a lot of nice kiwis and caught
- 12:46Speaker 1: a few giant New Zealand trout, which is what I
- 12:48Speaker 1: was really after.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Wow.
- 12:52Speaker 1: That was good. Question two.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Does it look like an emu?
- 12:56Speaker 1: Sorry. No, it doesn't look like an emu.
- 12:58Speaker 4: But it sounds like it looks like an ostrich.
- 13:02Speaker 1: No, they're just closely related.
- 13:04Speaker 4: I wasn't actually trying to get a point.
- 13:06Speaker 7: They're like smaller than a chicken.
- 13:07Speaker 4: I was just trying to visualize. It looks like a woodcock.
- 13:08Speaker 1: No, they are the size of a chicken.
- 13:10Speaker 7: Okay, the size of a chicken.
- 13:11Speaker 4: It's kind of like a woodcock. Okay.
- 13:12Speaker 1: It's got that kind of vibe. But way bigger. Somewhat, yeah. Okay.
- 13:15Speaker 1: All right, question three. The blank law was created in
- 13:21Speaker 1: 1998 in Colorado after a bull elk named Blank was
- 13:25Speaker 1: poached near Estes Park. You just wrote this for Brody.
- 13:30Speaker 1: You know, once I was reading this today and doing
- 13:34Speaker 1: it with Jennifer, I said, yeah, Brody's going to get
- 13:36Speaker 1: this one.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Everyone should get it.
- 13:39Speaker 1: The blank law was created in 1998 in Colorado after
- 13:44Speaker 1: a bull elk named Blank was poached near Estes Park.
- 13:48Speaker 1: So the law was named after this bull elk.
- 13:52Speaker 4: That doesn't help. Nope.
- 13:56Speaker 2: So easy.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Brody, do you feel like it's a hard question?
- 14:08Speaker 5: I feel like, I'm being honest, there was enough national
- 14:12Speaker 5: attention that some.
- 14:15Speaker 2: People shouldn't know it.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Folks like work in the hunting industry.
- 14:19Speaker 7: You know this, Randall?
- 14:21Speaker 4: No, not at all. I was 12 years old.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yes, I was going to ask Spencer, how old were
- 14:25Speaker 3: you in 1991?
- 14:26Speaker 1: Six years old.
- 14:27Speaker 6: Yeah, 11.
- 14:33Speaker 4: I mean, this isn't an unfamiliar concept to me. I
- 14:38Speaker 4: think I've heard the story, but I don't have the
- 14:42Speaker 4: name of the bull.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Okay, one more time. The blank law was created in
- 14:48Speaker 1: 1998 in Colorado after a bull elk named Blank was poached.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Near Estes Park.
- 14:52Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure they made a statue of this thing.
- 14:54Speaker 3: They sure did.
- 14:56Speaker 2: How old were you in 1998?
- 14:57Speaker 4: I'm going to change him into a joke.
- 14:59Speaker 2: It's not important, Matt.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Okay.
- 15:01Speaker 1: All right, let's go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall
- 15:05Speaker 1: says Tiny. Mark says Rocky. Spencer, Magnus, Laura, Blank, Matt,
- 15:11Speaker 1: Estes Bull, question mark. Brody says Samson. Technically, it's Samson.
- 15:17Speaker 1: No P, but I think we'll give it to him.
- 15:21Speaker 1: In 1996, a giant 1,000-pound 7x9 bull elk was poached
- 15:25Speaker 1: outside of Estes Park, Colorado, sparking an outrage. The fine
- 15:29Speaker 1: assessed to the poacher at the time did not seem
- 15:31Speaker 1: to fit the crime, so the Samson Law was created
- 15:34Speaker 1: to add monetary punishment to animals whose headgear had trophy status.
- 15:39Speaker 1: So now a trophy pronghorn will carry an additional $ 4, 000,
- 15:43Speaker 1: an elk $ 10, 000, and a half curl or bigger bighorn
- 15:45Speaker 1: sheep carry an extra fine of $ 25, 000.
- 15:46Speaker 3: I used to think.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Like, I guess I support the law, but why not
- 15:57Speaker 5: have it be that way for like, because it like
- 16:00Speaker 5: devalues animals that aren't trope.
- 16:03Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 16:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I think we've spoken with someone through the years about this, right?
- 16:07Speaker 1: Because in general, to me, it seems like wildlife violations
- 16:10Speaker 1: don't have, you know, enough meat. Yeah. Enough teeth. You know,
- 16:13Speaker 1: they don't really bite because you're like, oh, the guy
- 16:15Speaker 1: did this, this and this and it cost him 400 bucks.
- 16:17Speaker 3: It's like.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I mean, it's good, but.
- 16:20Speaker 2: It'd be great if it was that way for everything.
- 16:22Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 1: All right, on to question four. This one is in cooking.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Cooks Illustrated defines this seven-letter word as a small, cylindrical,
- 16:36Speaker 1: heavy-duty ceramic or stoneware baking dish designed for single-serving recipes.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 16:46Speaker 1: I'm making it too hard again. Oh, Brody thinks he
- 16:50Speaker 1: knows it. He's got to put his head down, meditate.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I have some.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Randall wrote a word.
- 16:55Speaker 4: I think I know this.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Spencer's got his board down. Did you write down the
- 17:02Speaker 1: seven letter?
- 17:04Speaker 7: I'm afraid I've done this question before.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the only reason I know it. Oh, we
- 17:07Speaker 1: need a new one then.
- 17:10Speaker 3: No, I don't think that's how it works.
- 17:11Speaker 4: That's where I learned this word. I've seen it since then. No.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Well.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Hey, listen, I did my best. I checked it against the... Yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and he checked it with me too.
- 17:22Speaker 7: There's our last line of defense.
- 17:24Speaker 2: I pulled out one.
- 17:24Speaker 3: He had that I knew we had done before, but
- 17:27Speaker 3: this one I didn't flag.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think we should spend too much time
- 17:32Speaker 4: beating ourselves up over. I've got a hole to dig
- 17:34Speaker 4: myself out of and Brody seems to be stumped.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's not going to come to me.
- 17:40Speaker 5: I'm going to go home and break these things.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I'm going to repeat the question. Cooks Illustrated defines this
- 17:49Speaker 1: seven-letter word as a small, cylindrical, heavy-duty ceramic or stoneware
- 17:54Speaker 1: baking dish designed for single-serving recipes.
- 17:59Speaker 4: I'm glad you said that, Spencer. Now I feel better
- 18:01Speaker 4: about my answer.
- 18:03Speaker 7: But I could be wrong.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I'd never heard of this before.
- 18:05Speaker 2: You're not wrong.
- 18:06Speaker 5: If you came up with an answer, you know it. Like,
- 18:08Speaker 5: I feel like it's all or nothing.
- 18:12Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Brody, do you need more time?
- 18:14Speaker 2: No, I'm not. It's just not. I can tell it's
- 18:16Speaker 2: not going to work.
- 18:17Speaker 1: All right, go ahead and reveal your answers. That's it.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Randy says ramekin, Mark blank, Spencer ramekin, Laura ramekin, Matt mortis,
- 18:27Speaker 1: Brody without an answer. The correct answer is ramekin. The
- 18:31Speaker 1: correct spelling is R-A-M-E-K-I-N. Ramekins are commonly used for souffles,
- 18:36Speaker 1: creme brulee, and chocolate molten cake. I once saw Chef
- 18:40Speaker 1: Andrew Radulowski make single-serving squirrel pot pies and ramekins.
- 18:44Speaker 2: That's what I use them for. Not necessarily squirrel, but.
- 18:48Speaker 1: They're usually about three and a half inches wide and
- 18:50Speaker 1: hold eight ounces if filled to the brim. At our house,
- 18:52Speaker 1: they're commonly used to serve ice cream. The small size
- 18:55Speaker 1: of a ramekin makes it easy to limit my ice
- 18:57Speaker 1: cream portions, which I need.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, me too.
- 19:00Speaker 7: My wife loves them for a good girl dinner. She's
- 19:03Speaker 7: just doing a charcuterie board that's got like, this one
- 19:07Speaker 7: has some nuts, this one has a spread, this one's
- 19:09Speaker 7: got some fruit. All my ramekins got to go through
- 19:12Speaker 7: the dishwasher after a girl dinner.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Hold on.
- 19:14Speaker 1: What's a girl dinner? You call it a good girl dinner? Yeah.
- 19:18Speaker 4: What is that? No, a girl dinner that's good.
- 19:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:21Speaker 3: What's a girl dinner?
- 19:22Speaker 7: A girl dinner, it's become a hip phrase in the
- 19:24Speaker 7: last five years where it's like, Instead of my supper
- 19:27Speaker 7: being a steak and potatoes, it's going to be like
- 19:31Speaker 7: just a grazing board of like eight different things that
- 19:34Speaker 7: are of small proportions. That would be a girl dinner.
- 19:36Speaker 4: That was a trivia question. It's a hodgepodge of snacks.
- 19:39Speaker 7: Hodgepodge of snacks.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Wives trivia.
- 19:40Speaker 7: That's a good way to put it. It was on
- 19:41Speaker 7: Wives Trivia, I think, two years.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Ago as well.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 19:45Speaker 5: You got quite a landscape going there, Randall.
- 19:48Speaker 3: I know.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Randall is really working out. some free show. Show that
- 19:51Speaker 1: to the camera so everybody can see what you got
- 19:53Speaker 1: going on. That's gonna be too close. Maybe this one
- 19:55Speaker 1: would be better.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a little out of focus, but it's fine.
- 19:57Speaker 3: We can see it.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Looks great. No, Phil, that's just how blurry.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Mallons, some evergreens.
- 20:00Speaker 4: That's just how blurry it is, Phil.
- 20:02Speaker 7: When we had the question for girl dinner, Seth's wife, Kelsey,
- 20:05Speaker 7: was like, the only thing I can think of is
- 20:08Speaker 7: girl dinner. And then the whole room got it right.
- 20:11Speaker 1: All right, we're on to question five. This one is,
- 20:17Speaker 1: it's kind of a half conservation, half fishing question.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 20:22Speaker 1: About five miles south of Thermopolis, Wyoming, the Blank River
- 20:27Speaker 1: changes its name to the Blank River at a location
- 20:31Speaker 1: called the Wedding of the Waters.
- 20:34Speaker 7: Well, so we need two answers.
- 20:36Speaker 1: You need two answers. You need the names of two rivers,
- 20:42Speaker 1: which are technically one river.
- 20:44Speaker 5: One time I caught a great big rainbow in this
- 20:47Speaker 5: very spot on a chartreuse egg pattern.
- 20:51Speaker 2: It's named chartreuse.
- 20:53Speaker 6: It ain't no use.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Again, the question five. About five miles south of Thermopolis, Wyoming,
- 21:00Speaker 1: the blank river changes its name to the blank river
- 21:04Speaker 1: at a location called the Wedding of the Waters.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Big rainbow.
- 21:16Speaker 4: You know what?
- 21:17Speaker 7: We'll see.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Were we together on that trip?
- 21:21Speaker 7: You wrote this episode for Brody.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Do you still have the streak going where you've won
- 21:29Speaker 1: every episode that I've hosted?
- 21:30Speaker 7: No, I lost one in there somewhere. Hmm.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Remember Joel Norikane?
- 21:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, he got a great big one there, too.
- 21:38Speaker 1: All right, one more time. Five miles south of Thermopolis, Wyoming,
- 21:46Speaker 1: the Blank River changes its name to the Blank River
- 21:49Speaker 1: at a location called the Wedding of the Waters. Randall
- 21:58Speaker 1: and Mark.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Oh, oh, oh.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I think I have it. You guys know this Western geography?
- 22:06Speaker 3: Oh.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Muscari as an angler?
- 22:10Speaker 8: I have fished here, and I cannot remember.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Can you remember one of them?
- 22:14Speaker 8: I think so.
- 22:14Speaker 1: All right.
- 22:15Speaker 3: That's good.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Matt's out. All right. Everybody's got their answers. Go ahead
- 22:19Speaker 1: and reveal your boards, your answers for me.
- 22:22Speaker 4: I didn't get any of them right.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Randy says... Don't even.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Worry about it.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Something and Powder River. Mark says Big Horn and Wind River.
- 22:31Speaker 2: He's got it reversed.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Spencer, Green and Wind. Laura, Wise and Big Horn. Matt,
- 22:36Speaker 1: Silk and Powder. Brody says Wind River and Big Horn River.
- 22:39Speaker 1: The correct answer is the Wind River changes into the
- 22:43Speaker 1: Big Horn River. No one really knows why this is
- 22:48Speaker 1: the case. There are lots of theories on the internet.
- 22:50Speaker 1: The interesting geography of the area makes it seem like
- 22:53Speaker 1: they are two separate rivers. The Wind is 185 miles
- 22:57Speaker 1: long and the Bighorn is 276 miles long. If you
- 23:00Speaker 1: combine the two for a total of 461 miles, the
- 23:04Speaker 1: river is the longest tributary to the Yellowstone River. The
- 23:08Speaker 1: Powder River is a close second at 375. And if
- 23:11Speaker 1: you add in the South Fork of the Powder River,
- 23:13Speaker 1: it goes to 550 miles, which would make it Yellowstone's
- 23:16Speaker 1: longest tributary. This naming stuff is not dialed. Brody and
- 23:21Speaker 1: I have fished the wind and the Bighorn River on
- 23:23Speaker 1: the same day. If I can remember correctly, I caught
- 23:26Speaker 1: a bunch of big ones and Brody did not. Although
- 23:29Speaker 1: the story he told earlier contradicts that. Phil, it's time
- 23:33Speaker 1: for a scoreboard update.
- 23:35Speaker 3: The many times I've met Jennifer, she's been such a
- 23:38Speaker 3: lovely person, but her index is shit.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Because here we are at halftime.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Still in it, baby.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Everyone's on the board. Randall, Laura, and Matt all have
- 23:49Speaker 1: one point.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I think I have more right than that.
- 23:51Speaker 3: You don't. I just double checked. There's a trail of
- 23:55Speaker 3: bodies from the people who have challenged Matt.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Well, I think the second half is going to be
- 24:00Speaker 1: much easier.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Mark Spencer and Brody have two points, and they are
- 24:03Speaker 3: all tied up in the lead.
- 24:05Speaker 6: Man.
- 24:09Speaker 7: Jennifer's going to win this episode.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I know. She just might. She just might.
- 24:12Speaker 7: All right.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Question number six. Quiche blank is made with bacon or
- 24:22Speaker 1: ham and cheese. This question is in the cooking category.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Can't that just be quiche?
- 24:30Speaker 7: Yeah, I thought that was a quiche.
- 24:32Speaker 4: What the hell, Giannis?
- 24:36Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Quiche blank is made with bacon or ham and cheese.
- 24:46Speaker 7: Do you mean quiche is made with blank bacon or
- 24:49Speaker 7: ham and cheese?
- 24:50Speaker 4: No, it's like a quiche blank.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Yeah, seriously. This is a specific quiche. It's really the
- 24:56Speaker 1: only quiche that has a name.
- 25:05Speaker 8: This was not on the girl dinner menu.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I think it could be.
- 25:09Speaker 2: It could be.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I've never been a fan of quiche myself.
- 25:11Speaker 2: How about you, Randall?
- 25:13Speaker 1: We....
- 25:19Speaker 4: Three years ago, we were hosting Christmas at our house
- 25:23Speaker 4: and we were in Costco grocery shopping and we saw
- 25:26Speaker 4: those big quiches and we're like, oh, you know, it's great.
- 25:28Speaker 4: It's a two-pack and that'll be like a breakfast for
- 25:32Speaker 4: eight people or whatever. And those things are still in
- 25:35Speaker 4: my freezer.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Can I have one?
- 25:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 25:40Speaker 1: We make single-serving quiches, not in ramen, but just in
- 25:45Speaker 1: muffin tins, and the girls eat them for breakfast.
- 25:49Speaker 3: I thought you said it was going to be easier.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Again, quiche blank. I thought everybody knew what this quiche
- 25:58Speaker 1: is called.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Did you eat this on your honeymoon?
- 26:02Speaker 1: I did not.
- 26:02Speaker 7: Did you and Brody eat these at the side of
- 26:06Speaker 7: the wind river?
- 26:07Speaker 1: We did not. Is it the bighorn?
- 26:09Speaker 9: No.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Quiche blank is made with bacon or ham.
- 26:14Speaker 5: Not unless they come in a bush-like can.
- 26:16Speaker 4: It's going to be a really obvious word that's going
- 26:18Speaker 4: to make me mad.
- 26:19Speaker 8: Is this in the joy of cooking?
- 26:21Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 26:21Speaker 8: Okay, I'm going to look it up later.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Okay, is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Randy says, Pancetta, Mark, Porcini, Spencer, Pig, Laura, Keish, Matt, Lorraine, Brody, Keish, American,
- 26:42Speaker 1: Matt got it. Keish Lorraine is the correct answer. All
- 26:46Speaker 1: quiches originated in the eastern French region of Lorraine. The
- 26:50Speaker 1: original recipe was actually made without cheese, and a bready
- 26:54Speaker 1: dough more similar to pizza crust was used as opposed
- 26:56Speaker 1: to the puff pastry or short crust used today. Purists
- 27:01Speaker 1: believe that a quiche can only have three ingredients, eggs, cream,
- 27:04Speaker 1: and bacon. The rest of us will take eggs, cream, salt,
- 27:07Speaker 1: and anything else you'd like to add to the mixture.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I like them all, but somehow I like the original
- 27:12Speaker 1: the best.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 27:17Speaker 1: You guys have quiche you like the best? I kind
- 27:19Speaker 1: of like spinach and feta and all that other stuff.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I'm kind of like, yeah. But when it's just eggs
- 27:24Speaker 1: and bacon and cheese?
- 27:26Speaker 7: Are there like some sweet varieties of quiche?
- 27:28Speaker 9: Or no?
- 27:28Speaker 3: I think it's just a pie.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it kind of just turns into some kind of
- 27:31Speaker 1: a custard.
- 27:33Speaker 5: We are learning a lot about Giannis' life in this.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I do like the fun facts.
- 27:37Speaker 1: All right. Question seven. The blank of a tent.
- 27:42Speaker 3: A lot of blank questions in this game.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Is an extra piece of fabric that matches the floor
- 27:47Speaker 1: size and is designed to protect the floor fabric.
- 27:50Speaker 4: There we go.
- 27:51Speaker 1: And keep it drier. This one falls under the gear category.
- 27:57Speaker 1: And I also believe it falls under the easy category. Jennifer,
- 28:00Speaker 1: when I asked her this question, she said, that's too easy.
- 28:02Speaker 1: You should throw it out.
- 28:03Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 28:05Speaker 4: This is a great question.
- 28:06Speaker 8: Yeah, I like it a lot.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I almost said the same thing to you, Giannis, actually. Like,
- 28:10Speaker 3: no joke when I read this question, but the other
- 28:12Speaker 3: ones are kind of hard, so I thought it would
- 28:14Speaker 3: be a good.
- 28:14Speaker 1: It's a balance.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:16Speaker 1: The blank of a tit is an extra piece of
- 28:18Speaker 1: fabric that matches the floor size and is designed to
- 28:22Speaker 1: protect the floor fabric and to keep it drier. I
- 28:26Speaker 1: made the same mistake, Brody.
- 28:28Speaker 6: I jumped ahead, put down an answer for a different
- 28:30Speaker 6: piece of fabric, and then just the last second caught myself, too.
- 28:34Speaker 1: You should just keep that one.
- 28:35Speaker 8: Yeah, you were right the first time.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yeah, you were right for sure, Brody. I feel like
- 28:39Speaker 2: there's different answers.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Don't second guess yourself.
- 28:43Speaker 8: Do not overthink this one.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I wanna see a Brody-Yannis fight though.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Well, there could be one coming.
- 28:51Speaker 3: This whole game has been about their close relationship.
- 28:56Speaker 1: The question is, the blank of a tent is an
- 28:59Speaker 1: extra piece of fabric that matches the floor size and
- 29:02Speaker 1: is designed to protect the floor fabric and keep it drier.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I hope the flavor text references a camping trip that
- 29:09Speaker 4: you two took together where Brody forgot this and as
- 29:12Speaker 4: a result, your tent was ruined.
- 29:13Speaker 1: We still laugh about it to this day.
- 29:16Speaker 3: It's like Slumdog Millionaire.
- 29:18Speaker 1: At this point in the episode, I was running out
- 29:20Speaker 1: of time for flavor text. They're just getting lighter and lighter.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Brody's writing something down here. It's the name of his group.
- 29:30Speaker 7: Chat with Brody and Steve.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 29:33Speaker 2: This really does seem to be anyone's.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Game, though, right now. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:38Speaker 7: It's going to be a fun scoreboard update.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I think either one is pretty successful.
- 29:47Speaker 7: Yeah, just give them both.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Maybe I should have.
- 29:50Speaker 9: Oh boy.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Maybe I should have given a letter count.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:58Speaker 7: Randall, give me one of those erasers. We're short an
- 29:59Speaker 7: eraser down here.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Oh, I've got three.
- 30:02Speaker 2: I can argue with you.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Careful, one of them stains your board brown.
- 30:07Speaker 1: If everybody's ready, go ahead and show me your answers.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Randall says footprint, Mark footprint, Spencer footprint, Laura footprint, Matt footprint,
- 30:16Speaker 1: Brody footprint.
- 30:17Speaker 7: 100%er!
- 30:17Speaker 1: We did it.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Would you have accepted ground cloth?
- 30:24Speaker 4: No, because it doesn't necessarily match the floor size.
- 30:29Speaker 2: But it doesn't necessarily not?
- 30:32Speaker 1: Tent footprints can extend the life of your tent, but
- 30:34Speaker 1: I personally don't think they're worth the wait. Maybe if
- 30:37Speaker 1: I was going on a long trip where I knew
- 30:39Speaker 1: I would be setting the tent on extremely abrasive surfaces
- 30:42Speaker 1: every night, I'd pack it along. What does the room think?
- 30:45Speaker 7: If you're car camping, why not have it? If you're
- 30:47Speaker 7: not weight conscious, you should always put down a footprint.
- 30:49Speaker 2: And I'll give you a.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Car camping, good.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Where we camp for our youth hunt, there's a lot
- 30:55Speaker 5: of wild rose there. And I had that stuff, a
- 31:00Speaker 5: sleeping pad once.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Oh, really? Right through.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Boy, I've got a real sleeping pad problem right now.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 31:08Speaker 2: Can't find the leak?
- 31:09Speaker 4: Can't find the leak.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 31:10Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 4: It's a real issue in my house.
- 31:12Speaker 1: And you tried the whole soapy water thing?
- 31:14Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 31:15Speaker 4: And I found a leak. And it's still leaking.
- 31:18Speaker 7: Uh-oh. Calls from inside the house.
- 31:22Speaker 4: I wish there was a guy in town that would
- 31:23Speaker 4: just fix your mattress for cheap. That would be a
- 31:26Speaker 4: great business.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Dip it in Flex Seal.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I don't think it would be a great business.
- 31:29Speaker 7: Oh, you know about going through airports? This is not
- 31:31Speaker 7: even related at all. There's people who offer to fix
- 31:34Speaker 7: your phone battery when you go through the airport. And
- 31:36Speaker 7: I'm like, maybe I should just stop and do that sometime.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I haven't seen that.
- 31:38Speaker 7: Just go to the airport just to get my phone
- 31:40Speaker 7: battery fixed.
- 31:41Speaker 9: What?
- 31:42Speaker 7: Yeah, I see them all the time now.
- 31:43Speaker 6: I've never seen that.
- 31:44Speaker 3: That's handy. Huh.
- 31:45Speaker 7: I bet it's cheap. There's never a line. But they're
- 31:47Speaker 7: also probably stealing my data.
- 31:48Speaker 1: It seems suspicious.
- 31:49Speaker 4: It seems highly suspicious. Let me just mess with your
- 31:52Speaker 4: electronics really quickly before you get on an airliner.
- 31:57Speaker 1: On to question number eight. This six-letter word describes an acidic,
- 32:02Speaker 1: waterlogged peat bog found in northern boreal and arctic zones
- 32:07Speaker 1: of Alaska and Canada. Randall with a quick answer. Brody
- 32:13Speaker 1: as well. The rest of the room is rereading the question.
- 32:18Speaker 1: This six-letter word describes an acidic, waterlogged peat bog found
- 32:23Speaker 1: in northern boreal and arctic zones of Alaska and Canada.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Randall, I learned this word from the video game we've
- 32:31Speaker 3: been playing recently.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Oh, good.
- 32:34Speaker 3: A lot of ducks and moose up there.
- 32:35Speaker 8: Good, good, good.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Yeah, man, I can't believe that area I found today.
- 32:40Speaker 4: I can't either.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Maybe you should just.
- 32:46Speaker 4: It's a target rich environment.
- 32:47Speaker 5: Maybe you should just skip the real hunting yeah uh-huh you.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Know he's he's getting close i'll be honest yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Right now don't have to deal with that bad weather
- 32:56Speaker 5: and getting tired and hiking up hills and getting.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Your hands bloody yeah.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Yeah plus you can sell all the animals this game
- 33:06Speaker 4: and buy new guns.
- 33:10Speaker 1: All right, Brody and Randall have answers. The rest of
- 33:13Speaker 1: the room is stumped. This is one of.
- 33:19Speaker 6: Those where as soon as you reveal it, it's like, ah.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a word I've seen.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 33:22Speaker 1: She's not there. You two, I would suspect, out of
- 33:28Speaker 1: the four left without answers, have probably trod through said
- 33:34Speaker 1: peat bog.
- 33:34Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Brody and I spent a night camped.
- 33:44Speaker 1: We definitely have. Yeah, that's the problem is that camping
- 33:51Speaker 1: where these things are found is very difficult because of
- 33:54Speaker 1: the moisture content.
- 33:55Speaker 7: Even with the footprint.
- 33:57Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Even with the footprint.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Oh.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Give up. You're not going to get it.
- 34:06Speaker 1: The players that don't have an answer, really.
- 34:10Speaker 7: I will not get it.
- 34:10Speaker 1: It's like there's a little ball sort of maybe jostling
- 34:19Speaker 1: around in Mark's head that's bouncing from side to side.
- 34:23Speaker 1: He's hoping it's going to knock the answer loose.
- 34:28Speaker 4: Yes, actually.
- 34:29Speaker 2: It's right there.
- 34:30Speaker 6: I can see it now.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Oh, we can see it.
- 34:33Speaker 3: I can see the Survivorman, dude, saying this word, and
- 34:36Speaker 3: I can't.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Les Stroud?
- 34:38Speaker 3: Yep, I can't get it.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Yes, that's right. Some of that might come in the
- 34:44Speaker 1: flavor text. All right, Mark's giving up. Go ahead and
- 34:47Speaker 1: reveal your answers. Randy says muskeg. Mark, not an answer. Spencer,
- 34:53Speaker 1: swamp marsh. Laura, no answer. Matt, swamps. Brody, muskeg. Their
- 34:57Speaker 1: correct answer is muskeg. We at the Meat Eater production
- 35:02Speaker 1: crew have hiked through countless miles of muskeg on different
- 35:05Speaker 1: Alaska shoots. Most often, it seems like we find ourselves
- 35:08Speaker 1: sloshing through muskegs when we're in pursuit of black-tailed deer
- 35:11Speaker 1: or moose. Muskeg forms in cool, rainy regions where poor
- 35:15Speaker 1: drainage creates waterlogged, acidic conditions that stunt plant growth. Slow
- 35:19Speaker 1: decomposition of submerged plant debris leads to the accumulation of peat,
- 35:25Speaker 1: eventually forming muskeg deposits over 30 meters deep. Musk eggs
- 35:32Speaker 1: can be dangerous. Although it resembles a grassy plain, musk
- 35:35Speaker 1: egg is actually a deceptive, waterlogged and hazardous landscape of
- 35:39Speaker 1: stunted trees and hidden water that can collapse beneath significant weight.
- 35:43Speaker 2: He says it's dangerous.
- 35:44Speaker 5: One time me and Steve and him were hiking through
- 35:46Speaker 5: some musk egg and I Went in up to my
- 35:48Speaker 5: hips and they just laughed and kept walking.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Well, Brody went up to his hips. In Northern Ontario,
- 35:57Speaker 1: there's a legend that in the 1870s, Muskeg swallowed a
- 36:01Speaker 1: train and a thousand feet of track when a track
- 36:05Speaker 1: was accidentally laid on the Muskeg. Did that happen? It's
- 36:10Speaker 1: a legend.
- 36:11Speaker 4: That's all I can find about it. You'll have to
- 36:13Speaker 4: ask the muskeg.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:14Speaker 4: If I may, if I may plug.
- 36:16Speaker 7: Was it covered in the Alaska book?
- 36:17Speaker 4: Yeah, in the Alaska book coming out October 20th. Okay.
- 36:21Speaker 4: We have a story about a guy. I found this
- 36:24Speaker 4: newspaper article. Guy went missing. Maybe a year or two
- 36:30Speaker 4: years later, they found part of his head and two
- 36:35Speaker 4: beaver skulls with broken teeth. And as best they could determine,
- 36:39Speaker 4: he had fallen in the muskeg with a heavy load
- 36:43Speaker 4: on his back and drowned or died of exposure and
- 36:46Speaker 4: then a bear ate him. And the beaver skulls, the
- 36:49Speaker 4: broken teeth were because they'd gotten caught in his traps.
- 36:56Speaker 4: And so they basically figured he had two beavers on
- 36:59Speaker 4: his back walking through the muskeg Fell, died, and then
- 37:02Speaker 4: a bear basically got rid of all the evidence. Wow.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Another one of the, there's a lot of really weird
- 37:09Speaker 4: haunting stories in that period.
- 37:11Speaker 7: I'm going to buy that book.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, you should. October 20th, anywhere you get your
- 37:15Speaker 4: audio books, go do it now.
- 37:19Speaker 1: What a plug. We didn't even plan that. All right, Phil,
- 37:22Speaker 1: it's time for another scoreboard update. Tell us who is
- 37:26Speaker 1: left in the game.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Everybody.
- 37:28Speaker 1: My goodness.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Left in the game. But Brody is in first place
- 37:35Speaker 3: with four points.
- 37:36Speaker 4: Brody is the only one who could exceed the Jennifer index.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Well, I mean, the Jennifer index estimated that someone would
- 37:45Speaker 3: get ten points.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Oh, that's right.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Because Jennifer got five. But we've got Randall, Mark, Spencer,
- 37:51Speaker 3: and Matt behind Brody. They've got three points. Laura has two.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Geez.
- 37:56Speaker 9: Wow.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Just another Giannis episode.
- 37:59Speaker 1: I hope you guys are having fun. All right. Question
- 38:04Speaker 1: number nine. A chipotle pepper is a smoked blank pepper.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Brody's got an answer. Randall's got an answer. Mark's also writing.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Everyone's got an answer.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Spencer's writing.
- 38:19Speaker 4: I was hoping this was a question about chipotle.
- 38:22Speaker 1: A chipotle pepper is a smoked blank pepper. Everybody feel
- 38:33Speaker 1: good about their answers? No, but you got something written down.
- 38:36Speaker 4: I bet we all have the same answer.
- 38:37Speaker 1: All right. Let's go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall
- 38:40Speaker 1: says adobo.
- 38:42Speaker 4: No.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Mark, jalapeno. Spencer, jalapeno. Laura, Anaheim. Matt, adobo. Brody, jalapeno.
- 38:49Speaker 1: The correct answer is jalapeno. Jalapeno spend most of their
- 38:54Speaker 1: life green, but at the end of the season, they
- 38:57Speaker 1: turn red. The leftover red jalapenos are picked to be
- 39:00Speaker 1: turned into chipotle peppers. The red jalapenos are smoked for
- 39:04Speaker 1: several days until they lose 90% of their moisture. Chipotles
- 39:08Speaker 1: are commonly found canned in adobo sauce. But turning up
- 39:15Speaker 1: straight dried, chipotle shouldn't be too hard. Just go to
- 39:19Speaker 1: your local carniceria. For a recipe using chipotles, you can
- 39:23Speaker 1: try Chef Lucas Leaf's venison burrito bowl on the Meat
- 39:25Speaker 1: Eater website. Lucas makes venison tinga for the protein which
- 39:30Speaker 1: is flavored with cumin, oregano, tomatoes, garlic, apple cider vinegar,
- 39:34Speaker 1: and chipotle peppers.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Go to my local what?
- 39:37Speaker 1: Carniceria.
- 39:38Speaker 7: The Mexican grocer?
- 39:40Speaker 8: Where is that in Bozeman?
- 39:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 2: We got one in Four Corners.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Four Corners has one.
- 39:44Speaker 4: 15-year-old girl's birthday party.
- 39:48Speaker 1: That's a quesadilla. Randall, you knew that. All right, Phil,
- 39:53Speaker 1: we need another correct answer. Oh, no, no, no. Sorry. Oh,
- 39:57Speaker 1: you guys want a correct answer review or scoreboard update?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Dealer's choice. Let's do one more update since the game's
- 40:01Speaker 3: so close. Brody got that right, so he's up to
- 40:04Speaker 3: five points. Randall slipped up. He dropped down to three.
- 40:07Speaker 3: So behind Brody with one question left are Mark and
- 40:10Speaker 3: Spencer with four points.
- 40:13Speaker 1: I hate to say it, guys, but Brody's going to
- 40:15Speaker 1: do probably pretty good.
- 40:20Speaker 4: All right.
- 40:20Speaker 1: A correct answer review. Number one was black-tailed deer. Number two, kiwi.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Number three, Samson. Four, ramekin. Five, Wind River to Bighorn River. Six,
- 40:37Speaker 1: quiche Lorraine. Seven, footprint. Eight, muskeg. Nine, jalapeno. We're on
- 40:46Speaker 1: to question 10. Name six of the 12 grouse species
- 40:52Speaker 1: that reside in North America. Again, the question is, name
- 41:07Speaker 1: six of the 12 grouse species that reside in North America. Technically,
- 41:12Speaker 1: it's not a question.
- 41:13Speaker 3: It's a demand.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Demanding that you name six of the 12 grouse species
- 41:24Speaker 1: that reside in North America. This is the one where
- 41:30Speaker 1: I had to give Jennifer some pushing, urging, reminders of
- 41:36Speaker 1: where we've been to remember six of them.
- 41:51Speaker 4: TikTok is deafening. It's quiet in here.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Brody is confident. He has six grouse species written down.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Randall's still working. Mark is working. Spencer. Has six.
- 42:13Speaker 7: I think I got some duplicates.
- 42:15Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 42:15Speaker 9: This grouse got my dog, Giannis.
- 42:32Speaker 2: All right.
- 42:35Speaker 1: One last time. Name six of the 12 grouse species
- 42:38Speaker 1: that reside in North America.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Whenever I think about asking a question like this, I'm
- 42:44Speaker 4: deterred by how long it'll take me to read all
- 42:46Speaker 4: the answers as I go along the room.
- 42:48Speaker 2: That makes sense because it looks like you're falling asleep.
- 42:51Speaker 4: I am.
- 42:52Speaker 7: He's up too late playing his game.
- 42:55Speaker 4: No, no.
- 42:55Speaker 1: All right, Matt. I'm going to still give Matt and
- 43:00Speaker 1: Laura another 30 seconds here. They're still thinking it through.
- 43:03Speaker 4: I stayed up late thinking about playing the game today.
- 43:11Speaker 4: And my dog was sneezing a lot last night.
- 43:14Speaker 1: All right, Randall, go ahead and reveal your answer. And
- 43:17Speaker 1: everybody else, too.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Randall says Sage, Ruffed, Blue, Sooty, Spruce, Mountain. Mark, Ruffed, Sage, Dusky, Blue, Sooty, Sharptail. Spencer, Blue, Ruffed, Dusky, Sharptail,
- 43:32Speaker 1: Greater Sage, Lesser Sage. Laura, Sage, Sharptail, Dusky, Ruffed, Ptarmigan, Woodcock. Matt, sage, sharptail, roughy, mountain, hun, desert. Brody, rough, sharptail, sage, spruce, dusky,
- 43:53Speaker 1: and sooty. Brody got it. The correct answers could be
- 43:59Speaker 1: greater sage grouse, Gunnison sage grouse, sharptail grouse, greater prairie chicken,
- 44:04Speaker 1: lesser prairie chicken, spruce grouse, rough grouse, sooty grouse, dusky grouse,
- 44:10Speaker 1: And those two are the ones that used to be blue.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Willow ptarmigan, rock ptarmigan, and finally, white-tailed ptarmigan. Meter's Shoes
- 44:20Speaker 1: have brought me in contact with all of the grouse
- 44:23Speaker 1: besides Gunnison, greater and lesser prairie chickens, and willow ptarmigan.
- 44:28Speaker 1: All of them have been good eating, but I prefer
- 44:30Speaker 1: the dusky grouse. It has the lightest colored meat. I
- 44:34Speaker 1: found this on the internet. Aldo Leopold wrote in a
- 44:37Speaker 1: San Cali automatic. Blah. in a Sand County almanac. The
- 44:41Speaker 1: grouse represents only a millionth of either the mass or
- 44:45Speaker 1: the energy of an acre. Yet subtract the grouse and
- 44:49Speaker 1: the whole thing is dead. God, that guy was great.
- 44:52Speaker 1: He loved the grouse. In February, the Trump administration removed
- 44:56Speaker 1: ESA protections for the lesser prey chicken. This bird is
- 45:00Speaker 1: presently working with less than 10% of its historical habitat.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Without protections, its future is grim. If you'd like to
- 45:06Speaker 1: support efforts to save this grouse, look into the North
- 45:09Speaker 1: American Grouse Partnership or Pheasants Forever, the Nature Conservancy, the
- 45:13Speaker 1: Audubon Society, all of which currently have active grouse programs.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Are they looking to do the same with sage grouse, Mark?
- 45:22Speaker 7: They've been talking about all sorts of things like that.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Bad news from that administration. All right.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I guess that makes Brody the winner. Phil?
- 45:31Speaker 3: It does indeed.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Huzzah!
- 45:32Speaker 7: He got six points.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Brody gets six. One better. One and a half better
- 45:38Speaker 1: than Jennifer. Brody, where would you like to donate your
- 45:41Speaker 1: $ 500 to?
- 45:41Speaker 5: Well, you just mentioned some organizations.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Let's do one of them.
- 45:44Speaker 9: Okay.
- 45:44Speaker 2: The American Grouse Partnership. Is that it?
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yes. It was....
- 45:52Speaker 3: Yeah, North American Grouse Partnership.
- 45:53Speaker 1: North American Grouse Partnership.
- 45:54Speaker 7: I don't think we've given to them before.
- 45:55Speaker 1: We haven't.
- 45:55Speaker 4: Hey!
- 45:57Speaker 3: Very good.
- 45:58Speaker 7: New place for $ 500. Good job, Yanni.
- 46:00Speaker 1: It was fun. Hey, thank you. Thank you all for listening, watching, listening.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Join us next week for more Meat Eater Trivia, the
- 46:08Speaker 1: only game show where conservation always wins.
- 46:11Speaker 4: Well done.
- 46:11Speaker 7: Thank you, Yanni.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Spencer from South Dakota, he's the host.
- 46:19Speaker 6: Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down.
- 46:23Speaker 2: And he likes taking those two- and three-year-old bucks.
- 46:33Speaker 5: And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
