Latest / Brandon Fogal Evolution / #100 - Bill Maher Goes Down into the MAGA Mine
Transcript
- 0:00So Bill Maher goes to dinner with Donald Trump, Kid Rock, and Dana White.
- 0:07And this happened a couple weeks ago, March 31st.
- 0:10But Bill Maher came out on Friday on his show and gave his account of what went down and how it was.
- 0:18And it might surprise you. So I wanted to talk about this actually last week
- 0:23when I first heard about the dinner that they had together. but I held off and
- 0:28I'm glad I did because we got to see from Bill Maher.
- 0:32He gave what he experienced in the whole dinner.
- 0:36And it was very just to the point reporting the facts, not saying he's all MAGA.
- 0:42He's not MAGA whatsoever, but he gave his position of what it felt like to sit
- 0:48down with the man behind what we see on TV, Donald Trump.
- 0:53My name is Brandon Fogle. This is evolution.
- 0:56Let's dive into this. So it was, that is a very interesting scenario.
- 1:03And this is something that I've always liked about Bill Maher because I've liked
- 1:09Bill Maher for like a long time, maybe 20 years, however long,
- 1:12whenever he was doing his first show, Politically Incorrect.
- 1:14I like, I always liked Bill Maher. He's a comedian. He's funny.
- 1:19He's at times vulgar.
- 1:22He's, but what I've always liked about Bill Maher is he's to the point,
- 1:27he says what he thinks no matter what political side people want to place him on.
- 1:34He doesn't walk lockstep with anyone.
- 1:37He's very individualistic, independent minded.
- 1:41You could say he definitely leans left, but the left has gone so far to the
- 1:46left in a lot of ways that a lot of people that used to be left-leaning and
- 1:51Democrat are more centrist in a lot of ways now.
- 1:55It was really eye-opening to hear what he said because he's not been a Trump supporter at all.
- 2:03Trump actually sued Bill Maher, and they went back at each other back and forth
- 2:08so many times in just this, the last eight years.
- 2:12And he starts it off with his show and saying, This is all the,
- 2:17he has like 60 epithets or 60 names that Donald Trump has called him.
- 2:21He takes it to the White House.
- 2:23He reads it in front of his show and he says, I'm not going to go through the
- 2:26list, but he goes through them all.
- 2:28And then he says, Donald Trump, he signs that list that Bill Maher gave him.
- 2:33This is, I think it's a reminder that we don't have to be so on a team and so
- 2:39just blinded that we are all real people. We all have real lives.
- 2:46We all have real perspectives.
- 2:48And it doesn't matter if somebody's on the other side of what position you were
- 2:52on. We're still real people.
- 2:54And I think this was an emblematic event that just shows that we can come together.
- 3:00It's politics doesn't need to be something that we completely divide over and
- 3:05we have to be so tribal in everything we do.
- 3:08And I think Bill Maher, he shows that perfectly in his willingness to sit down.
- 3:13He ends it all by saying in his sit down with Trump and talking about him going
- 3:18back and forth with Donald and saying, you know, there are a lot of people that
- 3:22did not want us to sit down together.
- 3:24And both of them agreed that those are the people that we don't like.
- 3:29We don't like when people say you cannot cross the aisle.
- 3:33You have to be on your side, as opposed to we are all Americans.
- 3:37We are all on the same side. No matter how much politics Washington wants to
- 3:42shove down our throats and every day just make us seem like we're all so divided.
- 3:46We have to hate whoever doesn't bleed our party line.
- 3:51And so that's exactly why I love Bill Maher.
- 3:55This is Bill talking about when they're walking through. So Kid Rock asks Bill,
- 3:59he says, did any of the other presidents ever offer for you to come to the White
- 4:04House, give you this opportunity just to come there?
- 4:07Hillary, the Clintons, Obama, did they ever offer this to you?
- 4:11And he's and he they did not. They never did. You know, and he makes it clear.
- 4:16He says, I never felt I would not have felt as comfortable as I did with talking
- 4:21to Donald Trump as I would have had I been talking to Barack Obama,
- 4:25Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and all and all the Clintons, all that.
- 4:29All the Clintons, because I think he saw behind the what people see on TV when
- 4:36Donald Trump, he just seems like he seemed he definitely gives an aura and an impression of who he is.
- 4:43And so they're walking through the White House and he's just not pulling anything.
- 4:47He's just giving it all to the president and just saying what he thinks.
- 4:51He doesn't hold anything back. He doesn't feel like he needs to hold anything back.
- 4:55He just, it's like sitting down with somebody, sitting down and having a beer with somebody.
- 5:01And even though Donald Trump doesn't drink a beer, but like, it felt like that.
- 5:05He could actually just talk and they didn't have to like come at each other's throats.
- 5:10They didn't have to be in a defensive posture. He could say to what,
- 5:14and I think he went into it.
- 5:15He didn't know what to expect. And he caught Trump, what he thought would have
- 5:19been catching him off guard.
- 5:21But we're going to see how Trump's reaction, even in talking about the 2020 election,
- 5:25and he brings up how Trump reacted when he said the 2020 election,
- 5:30and then Trump said he uses the word loss, which we have not heard Trump say.
- 5:36But it must have been something with the 2020 election, because I know he used
- 5:40the word lost, and I distinctly remember saying, wow, I never thought I'd hear you say that.
- 5:46He didn't get mad he's much more self-aware than
- 5:50he lets on in public look i get it
- 5:53it doesn't matter who he is at a private dinner
- 5:56with a comedian it matters who he is on the world stage i'm just taking as a
- 6:00positive that this person exists because everything i've ever not liked about
- 6:06him was i swear to god absent at least on this night with this guy bob kidrock
- 6:12told me the night before,
- 6:14he said, if you want to get a word in edgewise, you're going to have to cut
- 6:17him off. He'll just go on. Not at all.
- 6:19I've had so many conversations with prominent people who are much less connected.
- 6:24People who don't look you in the eye.
- 6:27People who don't really listen because they just want to get to their next thing.
- 6:31People whose response to things you say just doesn't track like,
- 6:35what? None of that with him.
- 6:37And he mostly steered the conversation to, what do you think about this?
- 6:41I know your mind is blown.
- 6:43So is mine. All right. So there's a lot there, but he is just straightforward and honest.
- 6:48He, I think he went in probably thinking, I got to be careful.
- 6:52I mean, this, this is because all he knows is the guy that he sees out there.
- 6:56He doesn't see an actual real person. And I think with Donald Trump,
- 6:59we don't see a real person a lot of the times, but he is a real person.
- 7:04And the impression he gives when he's out in the world stage and in front of
- 7:08everybody, it is bombastic. It is in your face.
- 7:11It is. You're going to punch me. I'm going to punch you 20 times harder.
- 7:15I'm going to go at you. I'm going to destroy you. I'm going to do everything.
- 7:20Whereas that's the impression that he gives out there in real life.
- 7:25And it's calculated. It seems like it would have to be calculated.
- 7:29And it made me think with anybody, I feel like in my own life,
- 7:33if I put my guard down, sometimes if I get vulnerable, people will just come at you.
- 7:39If they see that you're a real person, they'll use that against you.
- 7:42And you're like, oh my gosh. And I think it's just been a lifetime of him being
- 7:46in that kind of mental mindset that he is in.
- 7:50He's been in business for years, 50 years, 40 years. I don't know exactly.
- 7:55He's been like, been a realtor. He's been, he's all about the art of the deal.
- 8:00He's all about getting his point across, getting his position across and getting
- 8:06the best for whatever interest he has.
- 8:09His own, the people that he, his shareholders, whatever it is.
- 8:13He, it's a game to him. He, he's having the best time of his life doing nothing,
- 8:18but right now getting ready to sit down and have trade deals with the rest of the world.
- 8:22And for the United States, this is the best life that Donald Trump could ever live.
- 8:25So with anybody out there, if you, if you're in that position,
- 8:29I think you, he just gives that impression that he has to be a killer.
- 8:33He has to be no awareness of anyone else's feelings and just,
- 8:39he's all about him and pushing his agenda.
- 8:42When you sit down with the real guy and we're seeing it from somebody that is
- 8:45the opposite side of Donald Trump and the opposite side of what we would think
- 8:51are MAGA right-leaning Republicans.
- 8:54And he came away just a little bit.
- 8:59I would say shocked. He came away shocked and just, that was not what I was expecting.
- 9:05And I think he understands that the myth behind the man is that.
- 9:11It's just a myth. He doesn't know why Trump acts the way he does when he's in
- 9:16front of cameras, when he is going against the rest of the world,
- 9:20when he's going against people who are coming at him with all these agendas
- 9:26and all these things that are going to trip him up.
- 9:29I think he's just developed some crazy thick skin that is hard for him when
- 9:34he's in that kind of venue of the real life theater of the cameras on him all the time.
- 9:40He just he doesn't know how to react, but to be somebody that just punches,
- 9:45but to be somebody that just attacks.
- 9:48He doesn't ever let his guard down. And I think that's all the impression that
- 9:52we ever see about him. We don't see that there's an actual person there.
- 9:56And he says, Bill Maher says, I went down into the mine of MAGA and the guy
- 10:00who is running the show, who was in the white house is not a crazy guy,
- 10:04is not a crazy guy that I thought was there, but it's still a guy who portrays
- 10:10himself as a crazy guy out on the world stage. And he doesn't understand why he does that.
- 10:15Bill Maher says, why did, you know, you're scaring people. Some of the things
- 10:20that you're doing, you're scaring people.
- 10:22Do you really want your citizens to be scared? And with all realness and vulnerability.
- 10:30Bill Maher says, I don't remember what he said, but Donald Trump did not say,
- 10:34I'm going to stop doing that.
- 10:36There's things that, what he does in some, I guess it just depends on who you
- 10:41are and how you're receiving it.
- 10:42You might be a person that it's scaring you the things that he does,
- 10:45or you might be a person that loves it.
- 10:47I would say whether, whoever you are, we can come together. We can, like,
- 10:53find out, at least from this person's account, Bill Maher, that the guy in the
- 10:59White House is a real dude.
- 11:01He's a real guy. And he has regular feelings like everyone.
- 11:06And he's not the crazy guy that sometimes people paint him as.
- 11:11So this was, whenever I first heard about them sitting down,
- 11:14I thought it was just incredible because Bill Maher, him just to do this,
- 11:17because he would have got a lot of blowback from a lot of people.
- 11:20And it doesn't, I just think it should serve as a benchmark to our culture and
- 11:26to America of we need to come together.
- 11:30We can't be at each other's throats. We are all real people.
- 11:35Whether somebody disagrees wholeheartedly with you and you don't agree at all
- 11:38with somebody else, they're a real person on that other side that we're talking about.
- 11:42We can talk through issues and we don't need to just be in a posture that is
- 11:47completely, I'm going to kill you if you come at me.
- 11:52We don't need to be in a defensive mode every time, all the time, like 100 times a day.
- 11:58That's all we live is just defensiveness.
- 12:01If somebody says something that goes against my political side,
- 12:05let's pull down those stupid sides. Let's come to the...
- 12:09The realization that ideas matter, ideas matter.
- 12:13And it doesn't matter if your side has the good idea or the other side, ideas matter.
- 12:19I mean, I always feel like that the why we have red versus blue,
- 12:24the founders, I've heard that I've heard things that they were not all into
- 12:30that and why we set up this whole structure.
- 12:33I think it's silly because all it does is within our regular lives,
- 12:41it puts us against each other as opposed to just let's come at it with independent
- 12:45thought ideas. Let the best ideas win.
- 12:48Bill Maher is a picturesque, perfect example of this. You might not like him.
- 12:52I like him a whole lot. And it's specifically about the way that he is about
- 12:56this. You know, he he goes against religion a lot of ways.
- 12:59He makes fun of religion, but he's an equal opportunity religion antagonist.
- 13:05He goes against them all.
- 13:07And people that are that hate on Christianity.
- 13:09He hates on Christianity, but those same people are scared to hate on Islam
- 13:15or any of the other religions that you cannot touch.
- 13:18He goes at them all. He's equal about that. So you can disagree with that.
- 13:22You could not like that, you know, but at least I've always appreciated that he's real,
- 13:27that he's real with what he thinks, real with what he believes,
- 13:30because so many people, if you don't like the whole God thing,
- 13:34if you don't like, and you don't believe in all that, don't hide it.
- 13:37Just be, everybody, be who you are.
- 13:39You don't have to be obnoxious about everything, but just be who you are.
- 13:43And I appreciate that so much more than somebody that just conceals it and hides
- 13:47it and doesn't let it overflow into what they really think and believe.
- 13:50And show the rest of the world what they got going on behind closed doors.
- 13:56So let me know what you think. I really, if you got the same kind of vibe that
- 14:01I got from this, let me know. But if you didn't, let me know as well.
- 14:05So, all right, we'll leave it at that.
