Speaker 1: The views and opinions expressed on this program do not
• 0:03
Speaker 1: necessarily reflect the views and opinions of five ADWCHS, it's
• 0:07
Speaker 1: employees or WVRC Media.
• 0:21
Speaker 2: It is seven minutes past nine o'clock. You're listening to
• 0:24
Speaker 2: the Voice of Charleston five EIGHTWCCHS. I'm Delle Cooper filling
• 0:28
Speaker 2: in for Dave Allen, just for today. There'll be some
• 0:31
Speaker 2: few days over the next couple weeks I'll be filling
• 0:33
Speaker 2: in for Dave, either me or Jeff Genkins, probably me
• 0:35
Speaker 2: most days today, next Tuesday, next Thursday, and I think
• 0:39
Speaker 2: another round of Tuesdays and Thursdays after that, and then
• 0:41
Speaker 2: we'll see where we stand. But Dave will be back
• 0:44
Speaker 2: on this show tomorrow. He'll be back on his afternoon
• 0:46
Speaker 2: show with Amanda Baron this afternoon at noon for Metro
• 0:49
Speaker 2: News midday, so you'll be able to catch Dave then.
• 0:51
Speaker 2: But we have a good show for you coming up
• 0:52
Speaker 2: here in the next hour. Joining me here in just
• 0:55
Speaker 2: a couple of minutes, Joe Stevens from the city of
• 0:56
Speaker 2: Nitro is going to join me. We're want to talk
• 0:57
Speaker 2: about the opening of the Little League baseball season that's
• 1:00
Speaker 2: taking place there this weekend. They have special guest Chrisabo,
• 1:02
Speaker 2: who is going to be on deck this weekend for
• 1:06
Speaker 2: the parade and for signing some autographs and for the
• 1:08
Speaker 2: card show. That's going to be an exciting time in Nitro.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: I love that Nitro does this. I think it's one
• 1:12
Speaker 2: of the coolest little town things that someone can do.
• 1:15
Speaker 2: And I'm of course a huge baseball fan, so I
• 1:17
Speaker 2: think that's pretty pretty perfect. Also, Knell kind of Commissioner
• 1:20
Speaker 2: Lance Wheeler is going to be with us several projects
• 1:22
Speaker 2: that we're going to touch, one that's been successed around
• 1:25
Speaker 2: the around the area over the last few weeks, and
• 1:28
Speaker 2: some upcoming events as well. We're going to talk to
• 1:30
Speaker 2: Commissioner Wheeler about that. You can get your questions ready
• 1:32
Speaker 2: on that. We'll open up the phone calls in the
• 1:33
Speaker 2: text if you have any questions for a Commissioner Wheeler
• 1:36
Speaker 2: while he's in that's going to be in the second segment.
• 1:37
Speaker 2: And then I mentioned how Chris Abo is going to
• 1:40
Speaker 2: be with Joe Stevens in the city of Nitro this
• 1:43
Speaker 2: weekend for the opening of the Little League baseball season.
• 1:46
Speaker 2: Dave Weekly had the opportunity to interview Chris Sabo on
• 1:48
Speaker 2: Tuesday afternoon and it was a really cool ten minute interview.
• 1:52
Speaker 2: You know, Sabo when he was a player was a
• 1:54
Speaker 2: little bit media shot. He's done a lot of media
• 1:56
Speaker 2: since then. But Dave has very good insights when it
• 1:59
Speaker 2: comes to inner views and so forth. And so there's
• 2:01
Speaker 2: an interview it's about nine and a half minutes long
• 2:04
Speaker 2: that we'll replay before the end of the show today
• 2:06
Speaker 2: because there's a lot of folks that listen in the
• 2:08
Speaker 2: afternoon that don't necessarily listen in the morning. That was
• 2:10
Speaker 2: a good interview with Chris Abo. We are the home
• 2:12
Speaker 2: for the Reds, so I thought it would be a good
• 2:13
Speaker 2: idea to bring some of that content from the afternoon
• 2:16
Speaker 2: to the morning show. So you guys can hear Dave
• 2:18
Speaker 2: Weekly talk to Chris Sabo the show today. Phone calls,
• 2:21
Speaker 2: if you're going to call the show today is going
• 2:22
Speaker 2: to be brought to you by Guaranteed Bank. Phone calls
• 2:25
Speaker 2: are a service of Guaranteed Bank. Opening soon in Charleston
• 2:27
Speaker 2: thirteen twenty Kanaal Boulevard East Techting services are also provided
• 2:30
Speaker 2: by West Virginia's Finance Men's Store, Tony the Taylor, Virginia
• 2:33
Speaker 2: Street and Charleston. The next Big Trunk Show is April
• 2:35
Speaker 2: twenty third, The Malcolm Trousers Trunk Show launch provided by
• 2:38
Speaker 2: Polly's Italian Restaurant. For more, visit Tony's Facebook page or
• 2:41
Speaker 2: Bestmaster Taylor dot com. Let's bring on to the program.
• 2:45
Speaker 2: Now we have Joe Stevens who's joining us from the
• 2:48
Speaker 2: City of Niser. We want to talk a little bit
• 2:49
Speaker 2: about the opening of the Little League Baseball season, which
• 2:51
Speaker 2: is really kind of the official official opening of a
• 2:55
Speaker 2: spring and summer festivities. As far as I'm concerned in
• 2:57
Speaker 2: the Kanaal Valley, it seems like Joe, good morning, how
• 2:59
  Speaker 2: you doing today.
• 3:01
Speaker 3: Good morning, Dale, and thanks for having us one this morning. Hey,
• 3:06
Speaker 3: first off, before we get into it, my best wishes
• 3:09
Speaker 3: and thoughts and prayers out for brother Dave there. I
• 3:12
Speaker 3: know what he's going through. I personally know what he's
• 3:14
Speaker 3: going through. And you know, point at North David. You
• 3:19
Speaker 3: just keep on pushing.
• 3:21
Speaker 2: Thoughts with both of you. But yeah, very well intended.
• 3:23
Speaker 2: We appreciate that too, Thanks man.
• 3:26
Speaker 3: Hey man, It's gonna be a fun time Saturday. We
• 3:29
Speaker 3: tried this out last year, Dale, if you remember, we
• 3:31
Speaker 3: brought George Foster in, the only player in Cincinnati. Read's
• 3:35
Speaker 3: history to hit fifty plus oh Mons hitting fifty two
• 3:39
Speaker 3: in the seventies there and a member of the Big
• 3:42
Speaker 3: Red Machine and everything, and the kids just loved it.
• 3:46
Speaker 3: We had him throw out the first pitch last year.
• 3:50
Speaker 3: Then he did the Baseball Card Show and we said, well,
• 3:54
Speaker 3: if it works once, it's going to work again. And
• 3:56
Speaker 3: we went ahead and or organized what we wanted to do,
• 4:00
Speaker 3: and Chris Savo was available and like on the show
• 4:05
Speaker 3: with Dave talking to him, Chris Avo will be in
• 4:08
Speaker 3: town here in Nitro on Saturday morning the parade, the
• 4:13
Speaker 3: Little League Parade. He will be the grand marshall for
• 4:16
Speaker 3: parade that will start at eleven o'clock and go from
• 4:20
Speaker 3: Pickens Road to Nitro City Park along Route twenty five.
• 4:24
Speaker 3: So all the teams, all the kids, all the players
• 4:28
Speaker 3: both baseball and softball, they will be in the parade
• 4:32
Speaker 3: and it's just just a fun time. Then we get
• 4:35
Speaker 3: to city Park, Chris will throw out the first pitch.
• 4:39
Speaker 3: Not only is he throwing out the first baseball pitch,
• 4:42
Speaker 3: but he will be tossing the first softball of the
• 4:45
Speaker 3: season also, So Chris, he's probably warming up in the
• 4:50
Speaker 3: bullpen right now or taking some infield as it may be,
• 4:53
Speaker 3: but he'll be doing that and talking to the kids
• 4:57
Speaker 3: right there at the field and meet and greet that
• 5:00
Speaker 3: sort of thing. But another big thing is that we
• 5:03
Speaker 3: will be then escorting him over to Nitro High School
• 5:06
Speaker 3: in the commons area of the high school right there
• 5:09
Speaker 3: for the second annual Nitro Baseball Card Show that's put
• 5:14
Speaker 3: on by Tim Arnott with Third Floor Comics here in Nitro.
• 5:17
Speaker 3: We've got over forty vendors that will be participating in
• 5:21
Speaker 3: the show and everything. Chris will be signing autographs from
• 5:25
Speaker 3: noon until to All the proceeds from the autographs that
• 5:30
Speaker 3: twenty dollars a piece autographs from Chris Sabo will be
• 5:34
Speaker 3: going back to the Little League. So just a fun time.
• 5:39
Speaker 3: And by the way, Dale, we also have a baseball
• 5:43
Speaker 3: trivia contest. You know you've got seen trivia that goes
• 5:46
Speaker 3: on all throughout the city and the area and everything. Well,
• 5:49
Speaker 3: this one will be dedicated to just baseball. We did
• 5:53
Speaker 3: it last year, had a lot of fun with it.
• 5:55
Speaker 3: And the first the team that comes in first place
• 5:59
Speaker 3: will get two hundred dollars, second place is one hundred
• 6:02
Speaker 3: dollars and third place is seventy five. So it's just
• 6:06
Speaker 3: a fun time to kick off Little League baseball and
• 6:09
Speaker 3: softball here in Nitro.
• 6:11
Speaker 2: Man, I really love just tell me a little bit then.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: I think we may have talked about this a little
• 6:15
Speaker 2: bit last year, but I'm really curious on like where
• 6:18
Speaker 2: the kind of the genesis of this idea comes from,
• 6:20
Speaker 2: because it's a great way to relate to the community.
• 6:23
Speaker 2: I mean, it has a very it's a very modern production,
• 6:26
Speaker 2: but it's a very old school kind of vibe. I
• 6:27
Speaker 2: when we were talking about baseball introducing sort of the
• 6:31
Speaker 2: city's spring into spring, so to speak. And I kind
• 6:35
Speaker 2: of love that that that hometown environment. I love tying
• 6:38
Speaker 2: it into baseball, of course because I'm a big baseball fan.
• 6:40
Speaker 2: But what was it? Was there some nostalgia tied into that?
• 6:42
Speaker 2: Or is Nitro just a perfect place for this type
• 6:44
Speaker 2: of event? What kind of went into the idea for this?
• 6:47
Speaker 3: It's we we love to support youth athletics here in
• 6:52
Speaker 3: Nitro and Little League is apple pie. You know, it's
• 6:56
Speaker 3: just Americana at its best again. Tim or nine with
• 7:00
Speaker 3: Third Floor Comics and the Nitro Antique mal He and
• 7:03
Speaker 3: I just got together last year. He said, Hey, how
• 7:06
Speaker 3: about let's do something special for the little League getting
• 7:09
Speaker 3: this all together, putting it all together. For one day,
• 7:12
Speaker 3: we met with the Little League, Sean Hoffman, the president
• 7:17
Speaker 3: and everything. And Shawn's also a big Cincinnati red fan,
• 7:21
Speaker 3: and when I said about bringing Cincinnati Reds in, his
• 7:25
Speaker 3: eyes just lit up and it just like you said,
• 7:29
Speaker 3: it's part of a small town, just the persona of
• 7:36
Speaker 3: a small town. And by the way, well, a lot
• 7:38
Speaker 3: of people probably don't know that. When Nitro was formed
• 7:42
Speaker 3: in nineteen seventeen, one of the first employees of Explosive
• 7:48
Speaker 3: Plants C was Pie Trainer Pie Later. Pie Later was
• 7:53
Speaker 3: the third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates for seventeen seasons
• 7:58
Speaker 3: and had a Hall of Fame. In fact, he was
• 8:01
Speaker 3: the first third baseman to go into the Baseball Hall
• 8:04
Speaker 3: of Fame in Cooperstown. But he was an employee here
• 8:07
Speaker 3: at Explosive Plant C in nineteen eighteen after the they
• 8:12
Speaker 3: opened up and started making gunpowder for the US Armed Forces.
• 8:16
Speaker 3: So there's the baseball in Nitro goes way way.
• 8:21
Speaker 4: Back, Man, that that is.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: That's one of the reasons I love talking to you, Joe,
• 8:24
Speaker 2: is you're always full of I did not know that
• 8:25
Speaker 2: about Pie Train or that is a really cool fact.
• 8:27
  Speaker 4: About Nitro.
• 8:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know what again, it's about the kids. Yeah,
• 8:35
Speaker 3: and it's about competing and meeting some of their idols.
• 8:39
Speaker 3: I mean, by the way, a lot of people have
• 8:42
Speaker 3: already purchased Chrissabo cards. A lot of people already had
• 8:47
Speaker 3: Crisbo cards. I found a Chris Sabo nineteen ninety four
• 8:51
Speaker 3: card when he played for my Baltimore Orioles. Yep, so
• 8:55
Speaker 3: I have done that. He'll be signing his Ools card
• 8:59
Speaker 3: and not as read card. But you know, that's just
• 9:01
Speaker 3: kind of a side note. I heard the interview with
• 9:06
Speaker 3: Dave the other day. I'm glad you're playing it again.
• 9:09
Speaker 3: It was really exciting.
• 9:11
Speaker 4: I did not know he did.
• 9:12
Speaker 3: Not play little league baseball and did not take it
• 9:15
Speaker 3: up until the high school years and everything. But boy
• 9:19
Speaker 3: did he go forward after that.
• 9:21
Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt. I really like his story.
• 9:22
Speaker 2: I like how he in some ways was almost like
• 9:25
Speaker 2: a real life Crash Davis, where he was an all
• 9:28
Speaker 2: star at the minor league level for years and years
• 9:29
Speaker 2: and years before finally breaking into the big leads at
• 9:31
Speaker 2: twenty six and having a Rookie of the Year campaign.
• 9:35
Speaker 2: Like I've always liked Sabo's story and of course being
• 9:37
Speaker 2: part of that historic team for the Reds in nineteen
• 9:39
Speaker 2: ninety has always had a soft spark in my heart.
• 9:41
Speaker 2: I love the interview with him, talk to him a
• 9:42
Speaker 2: little bit off air, nice guy, really looking forward to
• 9:45
Speaker 2: for it to him coming to Nitro because it really
• 9:47
Speaker 2: is all about the kids.
• 9:48
  Speaker 4: And here's a guy that.
• 9:49
Speaker 2: Really worked hard and made it, you know, kind of
• 9:51
Speaker 2: made himself into a professional baseball player, had a Rookie
• 9:54
Speaker 2: of the Year campaign, was a good ball player for
• 9:56
Speaker 2: a World Series team. You know, that's inspirational for kids.
• 10:00
Speaker 2: And the great thing this is the last thing I'll
• 10:01
Speaker 2: say about this. I love all sports, you know. I
• 10:03
Speaker 2: like basketball, football and everything up there's something special about
• 10:06
Speaker 2: baseball because of the pace of the game and the
• 10:08
Speaker 2: way that you can just kind of stand around and
• 10:09
Speaker 2: talk and stuff like that. A perfect way to socialize
• 10:12
  Speaker 2: and to get.
• 10:12
  Speaker 4: The community together.
• 10:14
Speaker 3: And you know, baseball. I'll give you a quick, real
• 10:16
Speaker 3: quick story. I've been to Cooperstown number of times and
• 10:20
Speaker 3: it's all about baseball there. I actually saw a New
• 10:24
Speaker 3: York Yankee dressed in New York Yankee garb open up
• 10:27
Speaker 3: the front door of the museum for a Boston Red
• 10:30
Speaker 3: Sox fan and it's it's all about baseball, and this
• 10:34
Speaker 3: Saturday here in Nitro, it's going to be all about baseball.
• 10:37
Speaker 3: Chris Sabo again coming in town, being part of the parade,
• 10:41
Speaker 3: part of the opening ceremonies at City Park and everything,
• 10:45
Speaker 3: and then you get to meet them and with them
• 10:48
Speaker 3: at the Nitro Baseball card show at the High School
• 10:52
Speaker 3: from twelve until two. Hey Dale, if you guys, if
• 10:55
Speaker 3: you're not doing anything on Saturday, you're more welcome to
• 10:58
Speaker 3: come join the team for the baseball trivia at two o'clock.
• 11:02
Speaker 2: I really appreciate that, and I've already talked to my daughter.
• 11:05
Speaker 2: We were thinking about coming down there and doing that,
• 11:06
Speaker 2: just to have a day out in the nice weather
• 11:08
Speaker 2: and stuff. So I'm hoping to see you down there.
• 11:10
Speaker 3: We will be here and again thanks to everybody that
• 11:15
Speaker 3: has helped to put this together. And by the way,
• 11:17
Speaker 3: Chrissebo is getting a little hospitality from the Marty Grouse
• 11:22
Speaker 3: Casino and Resort here in Nitro. That's where he'll be
• 11:25
Speaker 3: spending his nights during his stay here in the city.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: That's fantastic stuff, Joe. I appreciate your time as always.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: I love what you're doing with this stuff. Over at Nitro.
• 11:37
Speaker 2: Tell the mayor we said hi, and we'll talk to
• 11:38
  Speaker 2: you next time.
• 11:40
Speaker 4: Let's go Os and Reds talk to you later. To
• 11:43
Speaker 4: take care. Man bye.
• 11:44
Speaker 2: All right, that's Joe Stevens from the city in Nitro,
• 11:46
Speaker 2: longtime friend and friend of the program and big Orioles
• 11:50
Speaker 2: fan and baseball fan in general. I'd like to talk
• 11:52
Speaker 2: to him about baseball and the Reds and everything else
• 11:54
Speaker 2: that's going on. You know, if you ever go to
• 11:55
Speaker 2: New York to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame,
• 11:57
Speaker 2: don't make the mistake. As a young man, I made
• 11:59
Speaker 2: the mistake that, Hey, I'm going to New York City.
• 12:01
Speaker 2: The Baseball Hall of Fame can't be that far away.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: It's pretty far away from the city if you're looking
• 12:06
Speaker 2: to get there from Manhattan, that's for sure. The Dave

  Speaker 2: how that goes.
• 16:27
Speaker 4: So far, so good, but we'll see what Dave says tomorrow.
• 16:30
Speaker 2: I know that he likes communicating that with you guys
• 16:32
Speaker 2: and being open about it, so we'll get an update

Speaker 2: from Dave tomorrow as that goes. Joining me now is
• 16:37
Speaker 2: Knawk and I Commissioner Lance Willer. The first time that
• 16:39
Speaker 2: I've been on this side of the glass with Commissioner Wheeler.
• 16:41
Speaker 2: Here a commissioner, good morning, how you do in this morning?
• 16:43
Speaker 4: For having me? Yeah, thanks for.
• 16:44
Speaker 2: Coming in I really appreciate you coming in and sharing
• 16:47
Speaker 2: some of this information that's going on here locally. And
• 16:50
Speaker 2: first of all, welcome to spring. I think we had
• 16:52
Speaker 2: kind of a long, long winter. It's nice to be
• 16:54
Speaker 2: on the other side of things.
• 16:55
  Speaker 4: Nice weather.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: Just to me, it's like a rebirth cycle. It feels
• 16:59
Speaker 2: nice to be in good weather now.
• 17:00
Speaker 11: I don't want you to jinx it's for here in
• 17:02
Speaker 11: West Virginia, Kennel County, because we've got some pretty extreme
• 17:05
Speaker 11: weathers even this time in previous years.
• 17:07
Speaker 4: But it looks good, it feels good. I'm happy. I
• 17:10
Speaker 4: know we're going to have.
• 17:10
Speaker 2: Some maybe some thunderstorms later on today, but that's just
• 17:12
Speaker 2: regular you know, April stuff, so that'll be okay. There's
• 17:14
Speaker 2: a lot of stuff going on locally, and there's a
• 17:16
Speaker 2: lot of things that we can talk about. By the way,
• 17:17
Speaker 2: if you have any questions, you can give us a call.
• 17:19
Speaker 2: Threes or four three four five fifty to fifty eight.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: You can send over texts. I think we have some
• 17:22
Speaker 2: text that we'll get to here in just a moment.
• 17:24
Speaker 2: That is three zero four no three five five zeros
• 17:27
Speaker 2: or eight threes or four non three five five zeros
• 17:29
Speaker 2: are eight. You're more than welcome to give us a text.
• 17:31
Speaker 2: We'll get to those here in just a few minutes.
• 17:33
Speaker 2: A lot of things that are coming up. You sent
• 17:34
Speaker 2: me some information and wanted to talk about what's been
• 17:37
Speaker 2: going on in Tornado. Tell us about the event that
• 17:40
Speaker 2: happened there. We saw a pretty good increase from a
• 17:43
Speaker 2: year every year as far as that goes.
• 17:44
Speaker 11: Yeah, so we're going to be having our second county
• 17:48
Speaker 11: clean up. These are very popular here in Kennall County.
• 17:51
Speaker 11: We get calls in the fall, the beginning of the fall,
• 17:53
Speaker 11: in the beginning of spring, when we hold these events,
• 17:56
Speaker 11: people wondering when is the county cleanup and when can
• 17:58
Speaker 11: we be bringing the three trash tires, appliances, things that
• 18:03
Speaker 11: are baby just sitting in your garage, sitting on the
• 18:05
Speaker 11: property that maybe the significant other has been telling you
• 18:09
Speaker 11: you need to get that out of here so the
• 18:10
Speaker 11: kids can go play so I don't trip over it,
• 18:13
Speaker 11: and you just haven't been able to get to it
• 18:14
Speaker 11: because it's just an inconvenience. Well, our county cleanups are
• 18:17
Speaker 11: a convenience to the public, to the people to be
• 18:20
Speaker 11: able to get trash, debris, tires, everything cleaned out and
• 18:24
Speaker 11: disposed of properly. You know, we just had one last
• 18:27
Speaker 11: weekend and I talked to our planning and a development
• 18:30
Speaker 11: director and he said it was a fantastic event, hugely successful.
• 18:35
Speaker 11: We had over one thousand vehicles drive through in that day.
• 18:40
Speaker 11: And what does that mean, Well, that means is that
• 18:41
Speaker 11: we've had nineteen hundred tires recycled. That's nineteen hundred tires
• 18:46
Speaker 11: that are not going to be found in our ditches,
• 18:48
Speaker 11: in our rivers, in our lakes. These are properly disposed of.
• 18:52
Speaker 11: We've also had one one hundred and seventy two point
• 18:55
Speaker 11: zero five tons of trash and debris. And you know
• 18:59
Speaker 11: when we we say tons, sometimes it's especially that big number.
• 19:03
Speaker 11: It's hard to understand that. Well, let me put it
• 19:05
Speaker 11: in figures that maybe it might be a little easier.
• 19:07
Speaker 11: That's sixty f one fifties. Wow, the same weight of
• 19:11
  Speaker 11: sixty f.
• 19:12
Speaker 4: One fifty's that for a second.
• 19:14
  Speaker 12: Wow?
• 19:14
Speaker 11: I mean absolutely incredible amount of trash and debris that
• 19:17
Speaker 11: was properly disposed of. And again, this is to make
• 19:19
Speaker 11: sure that we keep our waters clean, our roadways clean,
• 19:21
Speaker 11: our our communities clean, and make sure this debris doesn't
• 19:25
Speaker 11: end up on the side of the road or anywhere else.
• 19:27
Speaker 4: And we also had sixteen tons of metal.
• 19:30
Speaker 11: And then our e cycle program, which is something we
• 19:32
Speaker 11: just recently added in where you can bring in a TV,
• 19:35
Speaker 11: you can bring in any appliances and we can recycle those.
• 19:40
Speaker 11: That was four point seven nine to nine tons of
• 19:43
Speaker 11: e cycle waste just at the Systemville location. And guess what,
• 19:47
Speaker 11: we got one coming up here on the twenty fifth.
• 19:50
Speaker 11: It's going to be at the Cabin Creek area.
• 19:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's going to be coming up on the
• 19:54
Speaker 2: twenty fifth. It's pretty amazing when you think about things
• 19:56
Speaker 2: like this. If you're a homeowner or apartment of whatever
• 19:59
Speaker 2: you do, but just take a look around. And I
• 20:02
Speaker 2: did this recently because we're getting ready to go through
• 20:03
Speaker 2: a big clean out, you know, after years of living
• 20:06
Speaker 2: in the home and then having a kid and then
• 20:08
Speaker 2: you build. I mean you look around and suddenly it's like, wow,
• 20:10
Speaker 2: there's so much stuff here. And one of the things
• 20:12
Speaker 2: particular that I saw, and a clean up opportunity like
• 20:16
Speaker 2: this is perfect for that. I had something delivered, a
• 20:19
Speaker 2: large living room shelving unit that was delivered last year
• 20:23
Speaker 2: from one of the department stores. Anyway, it was defective
• 20:26
Speaker 2: when it arrived. They sent me a new one, but
• 20:29
Speaker 2: they didn't offer me any way to get rid of
• 20:31
Speaker 2: the one they sent me.
• 20:32
  Speaker 4: That was huge.
• 20:32
Speaker 2: I couldn't even fit in my car, you know, it
• 20:34
Speaker 2: was like too big for me, and so I had
• 20:36
Speaker 2: no way to really get rid of this thing. I
• 20:38
Speaker 2: used an opportunity to do it. But if somebody has
• 20:40
Speaker 2: something like that that they've gotten, of course it can't
• 20:42
Speaker 2: be one of the hazardous things that's not accepted. But
• 20:44
Speaker 2: if they have something like that that's been in their yard,
• 20:46
Speaker 2: they've had I've seen this in my neighborhood before.
• 20:49
Speaker 4: You put it under a tarp or something.
• 20:50
Speaker 2: So you know, you know, there's all kinds of ways
• 20:52
Speaker 2: that you try to get rid of some of these things.
• 20:53
Speaker 2: This is the perfect opportunity to get rid of some
• 20:55
Speaker 2: of that stuff that it's hard to get rid of sometimes.
• 20:57
Speaker 11: Well and sometimes it's just the vast amount of But listen,
• 21:00
  Speaker 11: I'm a guy that my wife and I bought a
• 21:02
Speaker 11: fixer upper home, and I started doing some of these
• 21:04
Speaker 11: DIY projects, especially during COVID myself, and uh, you know,
• 21:08
Speaker 11: I would end up, you know.
• 21:09
Speaker 4: Removing tile or removing.
• 21:12
Speaker 11: A bathtub or a sink or a cabinet, and I thought, well,
• 21:15
Speaker 11: what am I going to do with this? This isn't
• 21:17
Speaker 11: something that waste management. Uh, this is not something that
• 21:20
Speaker 11: waste management can come in and clean up or take myself.
• 21:24
Speaker 11: You know, you always have those limits of how many bags. Uh,
• 21:26
Speaker 11: you know, these are things that we need to have
• 21:29
Speaker 11: disposed of. It's for the convenience of the constituents here
• 21:32
Speaker 11: in Kennall County, and it's making sure that we keep
• 21:34
  Speaker 11: our communities clean.
• 21:35
Speaker 4: I want to go ahead and just say the dates
• 21:37
  Speaker 4: real quick here.
• 21:37
Speaker 11: It's uh in Cabin Creek, It's going to be April
• 21:40
Speaker 11: twenty fifth from eight am to four pm and the
• 21:44
Speaker 11: addresses one five one two seven mccorkor Avenue Southeast in Shillion.
• 21:49
Speaker 11: Again that is eight am to four pm one five
• 21:55
Speaker 11: one two seven mccorkor Avenue Southeast, Shillion. And you can
• 21:59
Speaker 11: find all these details as well on the Knall County
• 22:01
Speaker 11: Commissions Facebook page and our social media.
• 22:03
Speaker 2: Do you have to bring an ID right to prove
• 22:04
Speaker 2: your resident? You need to make sure that you do
• 22:06
Speaker 2: that to Maybe that makes sense, makes sense because you
• 22:08
Speaker 2: don't want people to abuse that type of situation. Just briefly,
• 22:12
Speaker 2: you do take electronics and car batters. We talked about that.
• 22:14
Speaker 2: How about something like a small engine, like a lawnmower
• 22:17
Speaker 2: or something. Yes, you do take those, Okay, so I've
• 22:19
Speaker 2: seen that before too. So if you're looking to get
• 22:20
Speaker 2: rid of something like that, that's a great he.
• 22:22
Speaker 11: Well, we can't take anymore. And I've told this story
• 22:24
Speaker 11: many times. We had one individual come in with a
• 22:26
Speaker 11: john boat, Oh yeah, and we took it. We actually
• 22:30
Speaker 11: had somebody bring in a car once and I think
• 22:33
Speaker 11: what it was was one of those fixer upper cars
• 22:35
Speaker 11: that you bought on a Facebook marketplace that you didn't
• 22:38
Speaker 11: tell your wife and then it sat there for a
• 22:41
Speaker 11: while because you couldn't get it fixed, and the wife
• 22:43
Speaker 11: finally said, you got to get that out of our yard.
• 22:45
Speaker 11: We don't take the john boats anymore. It's just something
• 22:49
Speaker 11: that we just can't do. But we do take just
• 22:51
Speaker 11: about everything. We can't take paint, we can't take oil,
• 22:54
Speaker 11: any hashdous material, And then I've always had a lot
• 22:57
Speaker 11: of questions about pro paine tanks. We will take propane tanks,
• 23:00
Speaker 11: but that valve cover does need to be removed prior
• 23:02
Speaker 11: to you getting one site. So there's just about nothing
• 23:06
Speaker 11: that we won't take other than what I just listed,
• 23:08
Speaker 11: and we've seen so many people come in with trailers,
• 23:11
Speaker 11: come in with trash. We won't take anything from commercial businesses.
• 23:14
Speaker 11: That's something that should be on the cost of the
• 23:16
Speaker 11: commercial businesses, not on the taxpayer residential only. But again,
• 23:19
Speaker 11: even with those limitations, you can tell from the numbers
• 23:22
Speaker 11: from the Cistsonville area how incredible it's been. I think
• 23:25
Speaker 11: that what we want to look at in the Cabin
• 23:26
Speaker 11: Creek cleanup is going to be even more incredible. And remember,
• 23:30
Speaker 11: you don't have to live in the Cabin Creek area.
• 23:32
Speaker 11: Anyone in Kennall County can come to this cleanup on
• 23:34
  Speaker 11: the twenty fifth.
• 23:35
Speaker 2: That's great stuff. So that's going to be the cle
• 23:38
Speaker 2: cleanup that's coming up on the twenty fifth. We'll get
• 23:40
Speaker 2: that information out to you again before we leave the airways.
• 23:42
Speaker 2: As far as the address and stuff goes, I have
• 23:43
Speaker 2: it right here, so we'll make sure that we get
• 23:44
Speaker 2: that out to you again before we move on. We
• 23:46
Speaker 2: do have a caller that's called in that has a
• 23:48
Speaker 2: question this morning. Do we get to go ahead?
• 23:50
Speaker 4: Caller? What's your first name?
• 23:52
Speaker 13: My name is Jennifer.
• 23:53
Speaker 4: Okay, Johner. Hey, Jennifer, how you doing. What's your question
• 23:55
  Speaker 4: for Commission Wheeler?
• 23:56
  Speaker 13: I'm doing well.
• 23:57
  Speaker 14: Thank you.
• 23:57
Speaker 13: I hope you are too. The commission Wheeler. I heard
• 24:02
Speaker 13: the episode from some months ago where he said he
• 24:06
Speaker 13: had been tagged the demolition commissioner. So I reported some
• 24:12
Speaker 13: months ago three dwellings unoccupied dwellings on our road, which
• 24:19
Speaker 13: is Borpe Road in the Tornado area. One completely collapsed,
• 24:24
Speaker 13: one that's in the process of collapsing, and then another
• 24:28
Speaker 13: one that It wasn't so much about the structure, although
• 24:32
Speaker 13: it's deteriorating too, but it was the number of junked
• 24:36
Speaker 13: vehicles I mean, including cabs from tractor trailers, two big
• 24:43
Speaker 13: of the two big flatbed trailers that go with with
• 24:46
Speaker 13: one of those cabs, multiple vehicles. I set pictures in
• 24:51
Speaker 13: and I did get a response very quickly. It was
• 24:56
Speaker 13: like five or six days, which straddled a weekend, so
• 24:59
Speaker 13: to me, very quickly. And sure enough, well they said
• 25:04
Speaker 13: it had been turned over to the Planning Commission, that
• 25:06
Speaker 13: they're the ones who actually take care of this, and
• 25:10
Speaker 13: sure enough people started showing up and doing things. I
• 25:15
Speaker 13: think one has done all they're going to do. They
• 25:19
Speaker 13: just retrieved what they wanted out of the house and
• 25:21
Speaker 13: they've walked off from it. The one that's collapsing, they've
• 25:24
Speaker 13: peddled with it, off and on. They're doing it themselves.
• 25:27
Speaker 13: They haven't hired a contractor to do it for them.
• 25:30
Speaker 13: I don't know what their intentions are. And the one
• 25:32
Speaker 13: at the end of the road with all the junk vehicles,
• 25:34
Speaker 13: nothing has happened. Okay, I'm curious how much time you
• 25:38
Speaker 13: give them or does it vary from circumstance to circumstance,
• 25:43
Speaker 13: And then what happens if they don't follow the order
• 25:47
Speaker 13: from the planning commission.
• 25:49
Speaker 4: That's a great question. And first off, Jennifer, thank you
• 25:51
  Speaker 4: so much.
• 25:52
Speaker 11: So many constituents have called my office due to me
• 25:55
Speaker 11: being the Cleanup and Demolition Commissioner. As you mentioned before,
• 25:59
Speaker 11: you know, this is something that we take as a
• 26:01
Speaker 11: high priority of cleaning up this county. I think it's
• 26:03
Speaker 11: something that we had not done well enough. And when
• 26:05
Speaker 11: I came in in twenty twenty one as your county Commissioner,
• 26:08
Speaker 11: I made it a goal to clean up this county.
• 26:10
Speaker 11: I think we've done a lot of great work when
• 26:11
  Speaker 11: doing that.
• 26:12
  Speaker 14: I have.
• 26:13
Speaker 11: Actually, I'm actually aware of those three cases. I've been
• 26:15
Speaker 11: following them as much as I can with all the
• 26:17
Speaker 11: other things going on in the county. To answer your question,
• 26:20
Speaker 11: we usually attempt to work with the property owner at first.
• 26:23
Speaker 11: You know, let's let's talk with them, figure out where
• 26:25
Speaker 11: their issue is and maybe see where what resources we
• 26:28
Speaker 11: can provide them. A lot of times when we go
• 26:30
Speaker 11: and talk to them, we tell them these dates of
• 26:31
Speaker 11: these cleanups and say, hey, if you can just get
• 26:33
Speaker 11: this taken to the location and get your yard cleaned up,
• 26:38
Speaker 11: you know, that's that's good for everyone. It's good for
• 26:40
Speaker 11: the community, good for you, and it's free of charge.
• 26:42
Speaker 11: And I want to make sure everyone knows that our
• 26:43
Speaker 11: cleanups are free of charge to everyone. If it's free
• 26:45
Speaker 11: for me, it's free for you.
• 26:47
  Speaker 4: Now.
• 26:47
Speaker 11: If they are not compliant with that and are not
• 26:49
Speaker 11: working with planning, then we do send them a master
• 26:51
Speaker 11: court and we put it in front of a judge
• 26:53
Speaker 11: and do what we can to get that cleaned up.
• 26:55
Speaker 4: Because it is an ordinance.
• 26:56
Speaker 11: It is something that you need to be able to
• 26:58
Speaker 11: do because the value value of the property that you're
• 27:01
Speaker 11: diminishing is also diminishing the value of the properties around you.
• 27:06
Speaker 11: And we feel like that it's something that we serve
• 27:08
Speaker 11: the entire community, the entire county, and so I'm glad
• 27:12
Speaker 11: to hear that there has been progress made. I will
• 27:14
Speaker 11: continue to be on top of those properties. I'll look
• 27:16
Speaker 11: into the one that you mentioned. If you ever have
• 27:19
Speaker 11: any questions, you're always and this is for all the
• 27:21
Speaker 11: listeners right now, call my office. Talk to my assistant Astrod.
• 27:25
Speaker 11: She's a lovely woman who will be able to answer
• 27:28
Speaker 11: your questions. Get the information to me if I'm not
• 27:30
Speaker 11: in the office, and we'll always get back to you
• 27:33
Speaker 11: as quickly as we can and make sure that we're
• 27:35
Speaker 11: taking care of it. These now, room's not built in
• 27:38
Speaker 11: a day. You know, we can't have it cleaned up
• 27:39
Speaker 11: the very next day. That's not in the power or
• 27:41
Speaker 11: the purview of the County Commission. But what we've seen
• 27:44
Speaker 11: is just having a conversation with a property owner and
• 27:47
Speaker 11: understanding what their limitations are. Maybe this is an elderly
• 27:50
Speaker 11: man that just isn't able to get it cleaned up.
• 27:54
Speaker 11: Maybe waste management hasn't came out there for weeks because
• 27:57
Speaker 11: we've seen that, unfortunately, and we fought that on the
• 27:59
Speaker 11: PS level. But we will work with them at first
• 28:02
Speaker 11: and help them with the resources to get it cleaned up.
• 28:05
Speaker 11: I think you saw that, Jennifer, from the two that
• 28:07
Speaker 11: you mentioned. But the third one, if they're not being
• 28:10
Speaker 11: compliant with us, we will take them to matter court
• 28:12
Speaker 11: and we will issue that order for them.
• 28:14
Speaker 4: To have that removed.
• 28:16
Speaker 13: Okay, I appreciate that. One thing I want to mention
• 28:19
Speaker 13: I have talked with Acrid and she is quite nice.
• 28:23
  Speaker 4: Good.
• 28:23
Speaker 13: I called about a month ago to report that they
• 28:28
Speaker 13: were taking action on the one that's closest to us,
• 28:30
Speaker 13: which was the one that is collapsed. Yeah, but what
• 28:35
Speaker 13: they were taking out in a trailer, We thought they
• 28:39
Speaker 13: were taking it to, you know, the landfill. No they
• 28:42
Speaker 13: were taking it down to the end of the road
• 28:44
Speaker 13: and dumped it alongside the road, which is yeah, have
• 28:49
Speaker 13: it property and less part of it.
• 28:51
Speaker 4: Jennifer, this is what I want you to do right now.
• 28:53
Speaker 11: I want you to when you get off the line
• 28:55
Speaker 11: here with me, I want you to call my office,
• 28:57
Speaker 11: talk to Astrid, tell her that information, tell her that
• 29:00
Speaker 11: you talk to me personally on the radio, and we're
• 29:02
Speaker 11: going to get you taken care of.
• 29:03
Speaker 12: Okay, okay, thank you.
• 29:05
Speaker 13: And I have one more concern that does not affect
• 29:08
Speaker 13: me directly here, but in traveling Smith's Creek Road from
• 29:14
Speaker 13: Tornado into South Charleston, you reach a point where you're
• 29:20
Speaker 13: approaching it's closer to South Charleston I think probably ends
• 29:23
Speaker 13: maybe at the South Charleston city limit. I'm not sure,
• 29:26
Speaker 13: but there's a ridge that the foliage, the trees have
• 29:31
  Speaker 13: been completely stripped.
• 29:33
Speaker 12: Yeah, it goes on forever.
• 29:36
Speaker 13: And the same thing out at the end of Green
• 29:39
Speaker 13: View where you hit Childress Road. And I can just
• 29:42
Speaker 13: imagine what a runoff problem that's going to be. Do
• 29:45
Speaker 13: you have any idea what's going on there?
• 29:48
Speaker 11: I don't right now, but what I can tell you
• 29:49
Speaker 11: is tell that to Asterroid we're going to get Department
• 29:52
Speaker 11: Highways involved and seeing if we can get that cleared up,
• 29:54
Speaker 11: because we've done a lot with our culvert ordnance as well,
• 29:56
Speaker 11: and that's another issue where we're making sure that we're
• 29:59
Speaker 11: keeping these air is cleaner to prevent flooding. But I
• 30:01
Speaker 11: want to thank you for calling in and I look
• 30:03
Speaker 11: forward to hearing from Astrod and maybe even be able
• 30:05
Speaker 11: to talk to you personally from my office to get
• 30:08
Speaker 11: these issues taken care of. And I promise you we're
• 30:09
Speaker 11: going to work on them, and I believe we're going
• 30:11
Speaker 11: to get them taken care of. But thank you so
• 30:12
Speaker 11: much for your call.
• 30:14
Speaker 4: Thanks Jennifer. We appreciate that.
• 30:15
Speaker 2: A text message coming in for commission Wheeler from A
• 30:17
Speaker 2: six eighty one four seven four for Commissioner Wheeler, would
• 30:20
Speaker 2: you consider a sign up list for pickups of those
• 30:23
Speaker 2: who do not have transportation for cleanup.
• 30:25
Speaker 11: You know, we actually looked into that, we're continuing to
• 30:28
Speaker 11: look into that. That's going to have to be a
• 30:29
Speaker 11: pilot program. It's not something that we're going to we
• 30:31
Speaker 11: want to come out publicly and promise because I think
• 30:34
Speaker 11: we're going to get a lot of people signing up
• 30:36
Speaker 11: for that and We've got to make sure that these
• 30:37
Speaker 11: are individuals that don't have the ability to bring the
• 30:41
Speaker 11: debris to us. We don't want to have people abusing
• 30:44
Speaker 11: that and next thing, you know, we're using taxpayer dollars
• 30:47
Speaker 11: to pay for a lot of trucks on the road
• 30:48
Speaker 11: on that day to get them picked up. But it
• 30:51
Speaker 11: is something that we've discussed internally, something that we're looking at,
• 30:54
Speaker 11: and we want to make sure again that it's efficient.
• 30:56
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 30:57
Speaker 11: You know, I don't want somebody who says, well, I'll
• 30:58
Speaker 11: just sign up for this pickup program because I don't
• 31:00
Speaker 11: have to get up this morning and deliver it myself.
• 31:03
Speaker 11: This program is to be cost efficient to tax payers,
• 31:06
Speaker 11: but to keep our roadways clean, our waters clean, and
• 31:09
  Speaker 11: our communities clean.
• 31:11
Speaker 2: These are huge events and they're really important. If you've
• 31:14
Speaker 2: been at home or of any kind that you've collected stuff.
• 31:16
Speaker 2: There's stuff at airhouse. I promise stuff that you probably
• 31:18
Speaker 2: need to get rid of and take advantage of one
• 31:21
Speaker 2: of these things. Commission Lance Wheeler has joined us this morning.
• 31:24
Speaker 2: I think we pretty much ran out all of our time.
• 31:25
Speaker 2: We had a pretty good conversation here talking about the cleanup,
• 31:27
Speaker 2: mostly having a lot of stuff that we need to
• 31:29
Speaker 2: get to one thing that you did send me some
• 31:30
Speaker 2: information on, and that is the single tracks from the
• 31:33
Speaker 2: hat Field and the Boy Trail that that you've really
• 31:37
Speaker 2: had a great growth of that that's coming up. And
• 31:38
Speaker 2: one of the things I just wanted to highlight it
• 31:40
Speaker 2: on the information that you sent me was the uptick
• 31:42
Speaker 2: of sales that are now from West Virginia residents. And
• 31:45
  Speaker 2: there's been a lot of I've heard a lot of
• 31:46
Speaker 2: chatter about that as far as the in state, out
• 31:49
Speaker 2: of state and West Virginia resources and stuff like that.
• 31:52
Speaker 2: I feel that that is a really cool thing. You've
• 31:54
Speaker 2: not only had a seventeen percent increase in the amount
• 31:56
Speaker 2: of permits that you're giving out, but forty two percent
• 31:58
Speaker 2: now are in state.
• 31:59
  Speaker 4: That's pretty amazing.
• 32:00
Speaker 11: Listen, we got Hatfilm McCoy to come to Canall County
• 32:03
Speaker 11: and it is incredible that we've seen the economic development
• 32:06
Speaker 11: drive from this. But also what we've seen from it
• 32:09
Speaker 11: is the amount of locals taking advantage of this. I mean,
• 32:12
Speaker 11: this is forty five miles of trails for dirt bikes
• 32:16
Speaker 11: that individuals can go out with their dirt bikes, maybe
• 32:19
Speaker 11: they rent them, maybe they take their own, but not
• 32:21
Speaker 11: only what you mentioned are out of state people coming in.
• 32:24
Speaker 11: I was told that a RV from Canada of six
• 32:28
Speaker 11: bikers came drove from Canada to Tornado, West Virginia overnight
• 32:33
Speaker 11: just to come to these trails on a weekend. But
• 32:35
Speaker 11: we're seeing a lot of locals. I've gone out there
• 32:37
Speaker 11: and talked to them. These are fathers with their children
• 32:40
Speaker 11: that they're learning how to ride a dirt bike with
• 32:42
Speaker 11: creating memories, getting outdoors off of the PlayStations in the Xbox.
• 32:47
Speaker 11: I mean, this is an incredible driver. You talk to
• 32:49
Speaker 11: anyone Tornado small businesses, they are loving this program. But
• 32:53
Speaker 11: it's also bringing a lot of good residents and giving
• 32:56
Speaker 11: them something to do that we've grown up, you know,
• 32:59
Speaker 11: as a thirty six year old from Saint Albans growing up,
• 33:01
Speaker 11: there was always what do we do?
• 33:03
Speaker 4: What is it for the kids?
• 33:05
Speaker 11: This is an excellent opportunity for the kids, those who
• 33:07
Speaker 11: want to learn to ride dirt bikes and those who
• 33:10
Speaker 11: are experienced. It's an incredible event. I'm proud of that
• 33:14
Speaker 11: that we were able to put that in. This is
• 33:15
Speaker 11: about economic development, This is about giving back to the community,
• 33:18
Speaker 11: and it's been highly successful. Just last week and we
• 33:21
Speaker 11: had over two hundred bikes on those crowds.
• 33:23
Speaker 4: That's incredible, and it's an apple free experience. You can
• 33:26
  Speaker 4: do it without.
• 33:27
Speaker 2: I mean you might use it the applicant, but anyway,
• 33:29
Speaker 2: you don't have to have an app to rade the thing,
• 33:31
Speaker 2: you know, which is interesting in this day and age.
• 33:33
Speaker 2: I need to let the commissioner go. I understand, we
• 33:34
Speaker 2: have one more phone call. We only got about ninet
• 33:36
Speaker 2: seconds left. Here'll go ahead and put the caller one. What's
• 33:38
  Speaker 2: your first name?
• 33:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hey Eddie. We'll go ahead.
• 33:42
Speaker 14: This is West Saturday. I just thought to Natalie when
• 33:45
Speaker 14: she was on there a couple of weeks ago, and
• 33:47
Speaker 14: she was going to get with Shelley Moore Capso about
• 33:50
Speaker 14: these abandoned from Second Avenue back to the underpass of
• 33:56
Speaker 14: Florida Street, the abandoned railroad crossing the head. Everybody thinks
• 34:01
Speaker 14: she's a dump for some reason, and they just throw
• 34:05
Speaker 14: their tresh out. And we had to live with it
• 34:07
Speaker 14: in our neighborhood. And it caught on fire last year,
• 34:11
Speaker 14: as you were well aware of. It melted. It melted
• 34:14
Speaker 14: the siding on the whole side of my house. I mean,
• 34:18
Speaker 14: it's just an actually waiting to happen. And is there
• 34:22
Speaker 14: any way that we can get some grants? She said,
• 34:25
Speaker 14: maybe you get Michelle Moore Capito. I've called her office,
• 34:29
Speaker 14: but if Flance could help me anyway at all, check
• 34:33
Speaker 14: into this from Second Avenue back. It's a contaminated environmental
• 34:38
Speaker 14: nightmare because that Kreasik ran in the ground for so
• 34:43
  Speaker 14: many years.
• 34:44
Speaker 11: Well, I'm a West Side boy right now. Anyways, I
• 34:46
Speaker 11: know exactly what you're talking about, Eddie. Yeah, we're going
• 34:47
Speaker 11: to definitely look into that. I don't know where Natalie
• 34:50
Speaker 11: is on what she's been working on. You know, the
• 34:53
Speaker 11: great thing about three commissioners is that we can all
• 34:55
Speaker 11: separate a little bit and work on so many things.
• 34:57
Speaker 11: But what I want to do is make sure that
• 34:58
Speaker 11: we look into that, take get it. Taking care of
• 35:00
Speaker 11: that'll be something that will work with the City of
• 35:02
Speaker 11: Charleston with you know, partnering with them and seeing what
• 35:05
Speaker 11: we can do. But Eddie, I appreciate that call, and
• 35:07
Speaker 11: when I get into the office, we'll start working on
• 35:10
Speaker 11: that and seeing if we can get some answers.
• 35:11
Speaker 2: Appreciate the call, Eddie, Thank you so much for being
• 35:13
Speaker 2: our last caller today. For Commissioner Willer and Commissioner Willer,
• 35:16
Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your time.
• 35:16
  Speaker 3: Man.
• 35:17
Speaker 2: We took some phone calls to address some important economic
• 35:19
Speaker 2: and clean up pishes. I think we did a good surface, Tona.
• 35:21
Speaker 11: I love it when I get to come on here
• 35:23
Speaker 11: and talk to my constituents and help and do my
• 35:25
Speaker 11: job and you know, solving their problems. So thank you
• 35:28
Speaker 11: so much for having me.
• 35:29
Speaker 2: Really appreciate it. Thanks for your time. We're gonna go
• 35:30

Speaker 20: Yea not a pro.
• 38:57
Speaker 4: Let me ask you did you play little league baseball?
• 39:00
Speaker 12: I did not. I did not. I grew up in
• 39:03
Speaker 12: the City of Detroit and city boy and we just
• 39:08
Speaker 12: sort of played like rec league and we played in
• 39:10
Speaker 12: the streets. Well, he didn't start playing organized ball until
• 39:13
Speaker 12: I was you know, high school, that kind of stuff.
• 39:16
Speaker 20: Hey, you know, there's so many There's so many things
• 39:19
Speaker 20: I wanted to ask you, but I'm going to start
• 39:21
Speaker 20: by asking you about your former college teammate, Barry Larkin.
• 39:25
Speaker 20: You both were at the University of Michigan together. Tell
• 39:28
Speaker 20: us something about Barry Larkin from his college days that
• 39:30
Speaker 20: we may not know.
• 39:33
Speaker 12: Barry Larkin, Well, I was a couple of years older
• 39:35
Speaker 12: and Barry my junior year was his freshman year.
• 39:39
  Speaker 4: He was great.
• 39:40
Speaker 12: As soon as he came in, he was great. I
• 39:43
Speaker 12: believe he was on a football scholarship when he was there.
• 39:45
Speaker 12: He was a great football player. And Cincinnati Moehler and
• 39:50
Speaker 12: I think Bo Shambacker, who was a coach in Michigan
• 39:52
Speaker 12: at the time, let him play baseball, and obviously it
• 39:56
Speaker 12: was a better choice. And Barry's in the Hall of Fame.
• 39:58
Speaker 20: Yeah, he's in the Hall of Fame. You know, you
• 40:00
Speaker 20: were a second round pick for the Reds. But you know,
• 40:03
Speaker 20: when you look at the way guys get rushed to
• 40:06
Speaker 20: the big leagues today, baseball's a little bit different than
• 40:08
Speaker 20: it was when you were coming up in the in
• 40:10
Speaker 20: the in the mid eighties, but you know, you were
• 40:12
Speaker 20: a second round pick. But man, you were in the
• 40:14
Speaker 20: minor leagues for a while. It took a while for
• 40:17
Speaker 20: you to get an opportunity to get to the show.
• 40:20
Speaker 20: Were there any times when you were in the minor
• 40:21
Speaker 20: leagues thinking hey, I may not be able to make
• 40:24
Speaker 20: it to the major leagues.
• 40:26
Speaker 12: No, not really. You gotta understand, you know, forty years ago,
• 40:29
Speaker 12: I mean it was it was pretty standard to play three,
• 40:33
Speaker 12: four or five years in the minor leagues to learn
• 40:35
Speaker 12: your trade. He used to say, you needed almost two
• 40:40
Speaker 12: thousand bats in the minors before you're ready for the
• 40:43
Speaker 12: big leagues, unless you're a pitcher. A pitchers seemed to
• 40:47
Speaker 12: get there a little quicker, but not much. But you know,
• 40:50
Speaker 12: you gotta understand, I had Buddy Bell ahead of me.
• 40:52
Speaker 12: It was a great player, right, and so that probably
• 40:56
Speaker 12: pulled me back a year or two. But honestly, back then,
• 41:00
Speaker 12: that was pretty standard. You went all the way to
• 41:02
Speaker 12: a ballaaa and then got your shot for the big leagues.
• 41:06
Speaker 12: You know, you mentioned, Yeah, they don't have as many
• 41:09
Speaker 12: minor league players now, so I mean they got a
• 41:12
Speaker 12: rush guys up, maybe a little quicker than they did
• 41:14
Speaker 12: forty years ago. Just because they've eliminated so many of
• 41:17
  Speaker 12: the teams.
• 41:18
Speaker 20: We're talking about Chris Sabo, the former Reds third basement.
• 41:21
Speaker 20: He'll be part of the celebration in Nitro to get
• 41:24
Speaker 20: Little League started on Saturday. I wanted to ask you,
• 41:27
Speaker 20: and you mentioned nineteen eighty eight. I want to ask
• 41:29
Speaker 20: you about that season. I mean, you came to spring training.
• 41:33
Speaker 20: I don't think there was anybody who thought you were
• 41:35
Speaker 20: going to be in the starting line up on opening day,
• 41:36
Speaker 20: but you were when Buddy Bell got hurt, and that
• 41:39
Speaker 20: turned out to be quite a day for you. I mean,
• 41:41
Speaker 20: you got your first major league hit, you stole a base.
• 41:44
Speaker 20: You still got the record from that particular game, the
• 41:47
Speaker 20: opener in nineteen eighty eight for the most successful fielding
• 41:50
Speaker 20: chances handled by a third baseman. That was just one
• 41:53
Speaker 20: of those days, right, and one of those days defensively
• 41:56
Speaker 20: where the ball just key kept seeming to find you.
• 42:01
Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean defensively, I mean it is way easier,
• 42:06
Speaker 12: you know, I think most big leiggers wuld say the
• 42:07
Speaker 12: same thing. Big difference between defense and offense. I mean,
• 42:11
Speaker 12: I can never remember ever having a slump defensively, so
• 42:14
Speaker 12: that was always the easy part of the game. The
• 42:15
Speaker 12: hard part is trying to hit that ball. But I
• 42:19
Speaker 12: don't remember that that many. I do remember getting that hit,
• 42:22
Speaker 12: but I don't remember getting all those chances, which would
• 42:25
Speaker 12: be unusual because third base doesn't get that many. You
• 42:28
Speaker 12: get one or two a game, that's pretty much the norm.
• 42:31
Speaker 20: Yeah, that's still the Major League record for successful fielding
• 42:34
Speaker 20: chances by a third baseman. Hey, the nineteen ninety World Series.
• 42:38
Speaker 20: You know, I covered that World Series and I remember
• 42:40
Speaker 20: going into it. You know, Oakland was favored. Obviously they
• 42:43
Speaker 20: had a great team, they had Dave Stewart and the
• 42:46
Speaker 20: Reds really romped in that series. But what did you
• 42:49
Speaker 20: What were you and your teammates thinking about before the
• 42:52
Speaker 20: World Series began and you knew you were going to
• 42:54
Speaker 20: have to play Oakland.
• 42:56
Speaker 12: We were very confident. We thought Pittsburgh was a great team.
• 43:00
Speaker 12: There's a struggle to beat them.
• 43:01
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 43:02
Speaker 12: Uh now back then we didn't play interleague, so but
• 43:05
Speaker 12: we knew they had big sluggers and stuff like that.
• 43:07
Speaker 12: But we thought our pitching would hold them down. Usually
• 43:10
Speaker 12: good pitching and we had some you know, good right
• 43:13
Speaker 12: handed sliders guys and stuff like that, so we thought
• 43:17
Speaker 12: we were gonna win. I don't think we thought we
• 43:19
Speaker 12: were going to sweep them, but we thought we were
• 43:21
Speaker 12: the better team overall. We could we could do a
• 43:23
Speaker 12: lot of stuff. We could heel grow, run bases, that
• 43:28
Speaker 12: kind of stuff, and then good enough hitters. Maybe not
• 43:30
Speaker 12: as much power as Oakland, Uh, but we can manufacture
• 43:34
Speaker 12: a lot of stuff.
• 43:35
Speaker 20: You know, everything gets magnified in the World Series. And
• 43:38
Speaker 20: there's a whole host of great Major League hitters who
• 43:42
Speaker 20: really didn't come through in the World Series. I mean
• 43:45
Speaker 20: Ted Williams and Dave Winfield and Jose Canseco and maybe
• 43:49
Speaker 20: most more recently somebody like Cody Bellinger. But man, you
• 43:52
Speaker 20: came through in that series.
• 43:54
  Speaker 13: Uh.
• 43:56
Speaker 20: You hit five eighty three in that in that World
• 43:59
Speaker 20: Series against Oakland. Was there something about the pressure or
• 44:03
Speaker 20: something about the bright lights that that made you come
• 44:05
Speaker 20: to the front because you had just a great series
• 44:07
  Speaker 20: against Oakland.
• 44:10
Speaker 12: No, I mean, uh, I never felt pressure. I mean
• 44:13
Speaker 12: I was always excited to play big games. I mean
• 44:15
Speaker 12: I won national championships playing hockey growing up. Yeah, Uh,
• 44:19
Speaker 12: state championships in baseball, and we went to the College
• 44:22
Speaker 12: World Series a few times when I was in college.
• 44:25
Speaker 12: So so No, I mean I was a streaky hitter.
• 44:28
Speaker 12: I was a two seventy hitter, so I mean, uh there.
• 44:31
Speaker 12: I mean I didn't hit that great in the divisional series,
• 44:35
Speaker 12: and I think I had a key home run or something,
• 44:38
Speaker 12: but uh uh, I'd have the ebbs and flows and
• 44:41
Speaker 12: it just so happened. The World Series is one of
• 44:43
Speaker 12: those times or everything, my timing, everything was really good.
• 44:46
  Speaker 12: I mean, but that was that's That's how I played
• 44:48
Speaker 12: my whole career offensively.
• 44:50
  Speaker 14: Uh.
• 44:51
Speaker 12: In the major leagues. I mean I was either really
• 44:53
Speaker 12: good or or mediocre. We just happened to be that
• 44:56
Speaker 12: World Series. I was really good.
• 44:58
Speaker 20: We're starting to wind down with Chris ba, the former
• 45:00
Speaker 20: third baseman of the Cincinnati Reds, is going to be
• 45:02
Speaker 20: part of the opening day Little League celebration in Nitro
• 45:06
  Speaker 20: on Saturday.
• 45:06
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 45:07
Speaker 20: You mentioned hockey. Now, you were a goalie, right, did
• 45:10
Speaker 20: you ever think about professional hockey in your future? You
• 45:12
Speaker 20: did grow up in Detroit.
• 45:14
Speaker 12: Oh yeah, I mean honestly, growing up, growing up, I
• 45:17
Speaker 12: was more known for hockey growing up, and most people
• 45:20
Speaker 12: in the city assumed I'd be playing in NHL. And
• 45:24
Speaker 12: I did play junior hockey up in Ontario when I
• 45:28
Speaker 12: was seventeen, and I loved it. But back then, forty
• 45:33
Speaker 12: five years ago or whatever it was, you had to
• 45:35
Speaker 12: make a choice. And when I got to college, I
• 45:37
Speaker 12: always wanted to go to Michigan. Yeah, that was my
• 45:39
Speaker 12: favorite school, and I had to make a choice. I
• 45:42
Speaker 12: mean every year I was at Michigan, the hockey program
• 45:44
Speaker 12: always asked me to play. And maybe nowadays you could
• 45:48
Speaker 12: play both, but back then you had to choose. And
• 45:51
Speaker 12: I always liked hitting baseballs, so that sort of went
• 45:54
  Speaker 12: out over hockey.
• 45:55
Speaker 20: Chris, what was your relationship like with Pete Rose? I
• 45:57
Speaker 20: mean it's well documented that Pete thought he saw something
• 46:01
Speaker 20: in himself in you and the way you hustled when
• 46:04
Speaker 20: you were on the field. What was your relationship with Rose?
• 46:06
Speaker 12: Like? No, I love Pete. He gave me an opportunity,
• 46:10
Speaker 12: always believed in me. Actually, I was with him the
• 46:13
Speaker 12: day before he died in Nashville, So no, I was
• 46:17
Speaker 12: like him. I mean I didn't hang with him off
• 46:19
Speaker 12: the field or anything like that, but baseball wise, on
• 46:22
Speaker 12: the field, he really helped me. He was a very
• 46:26
Speaker 12: I don't know if he'd been around Pete that much,
• 46:28
Speaker 12: but he was a very optimistic guy. He was always
• 46:31
Speaker 12: positive and and it sort of rubbed off on you.
• 46:34
Speaker 12: I thought he was great. He was a great manager
• 46:36
Speaker 12: in my opinion. Then all that gambling stuff happened and
• 46:40
Speaker 12: he couldn't manage anymore. But he was great. I really
• 46:43
Speaker 12: enjoyed him, and I was fortunate enough to see him
• 46:45
Speaker 12: probably at least once or twice every year for the
• 46:48
Speaker 12: last you know, before he died.
• 46:50
Speaker 20: You know, when people think about you now, I mean,
• 46:53
Speaker 20: you were a three time All Star, you were a
• 46:55
Speaker 20: starter on the Reds World Series team in nineteen ninety,
• 46:59
Speaker 20: you were Nash League Rookie of the Year. You're in
• 47:02
Speaker 20: the Reds Hall of Fame. But when people think about you,
• 47:05
Speaker 20: sometimes they get the mental picture and all they want
• 47:07
Speaker 20: to think about are those respecs?
• 47:09
  Speaker 19: Man?
• 47:09
Speaker 20: Where are those? Do you still have them?
• 47:12
Speaker 12: No? I don't have I actually get asked that question quite.
• 47:15
  Speaker 14: A bit.
• 47:17
Speaker 12: Now. Actually I had two pair. When I be tired,
• 47:22
Speaker 12: I still had like a couple pair, and I came
• 47:24
Speaker 12: to the Reds Hall of Fame. So the Reds Hall
• 47:27
Speaker 12: of Fame have them somewhere. So if you go to
• 47:29
Speaker 12: the Reds Hall of Fame before a Reds game, I'm
• 47:32
Speaker 12: sure you'll be able to find them in some of
• 47:33
Speaker 12: their displays. Yeah, but I don't have any at the house,
• 47:36
Speaker 12: and I think the only thing I have at house
• 47:38
Speaker 12: is I do have my World Series game War in
• 47:42
  Speaker 12: Jerseys nice, and I think I have a bat. I
• 47:46
Speaker 12: mean they're all packed away, but I think I have
• 47:48
Speaker 12: a bat, and I know I have the World Series
• 47:50
  Speaker 12: rings somewhere too.
• 47:51
Speaker 20: All right, Well, Chris, listen, thanks for coming on the
• 47:54

• 47:56
Speaker 20: nineteen ninety World Series in your career, and enjoy your
• 47:59
Speaker 20: trip up to Nitro. You'll be part of the opening

Speaker 20: day Little League Day celebration and you'll be the Grand
