- 0:21We can't wait to connect with you in person
- 0:24and engage in these important conversations.
- 0:27- This is Laura Dedo with the Becker's Healthcare Podcast.
- 0:30I'm thrilled today to be joined by Dr. Matthew Sullivan,
- 0:33chief Medical Information officer of ADV Health Southeast,
- 0:36Dr. Sullivan, it's a pleasure
- 0:37to have you on the podcast today.
- 0:39- Yeah, thank you so much for having me.
- 0:42- Now, I know we've got a lot to talk about, you know,
- 0:44especially thinking through what you're looking at
- 0:46for the next 12 months or so
- 0:47and just, you know, really what you're excited about.
- 0:49But before we can dive into that conversation,
- 0:51could you tell me a little bit more
- 0:52about yourself and your background?
- 0:55- Yeah, I'm, uh, one of our, uh,
- 0:56chief Medical Information Officers.
- 0:58I've been, um, with our legacy Atrium Company
- 1:01for my entire career in medical training.
- 1:03I'm an emergency physician, um,
- 1:05board certified emergency medicine and informatics.
- 1:08I'm, I'm grateful to be part of a, uh, a large IT team
- 1:11that's now across our entire Advocate Health Enterprise.
- 1:15And, um, I'm really looking forward to, um,
- 1:17this next upcoming year as we continue to, uh, grow
- 1:21and continue to scale, uh,
- 1:23projects across now a very large geography.
- 1:27- Well, that's great to hear. And you know,
- 1:29definitely exciting to see how advocate has grown.
- 1:32From your perspective, what are the biggest issues
- 1:34that you're following in healthcare right now?
- 1:37- Well, I think it would be, uh, awkward to ignore, uh, two
- 1:41of the large, uh, elephants in the room, cybersecurity
- 1:44and artificial intelligence, which you can't attend any kind
- 1:48of a conference, uh, on, on virtually any, any area of,
- 1:52of informatics
- 1:53or information technology without hearing a large
- 1:56chunk on both of those things.
- 1:58Uh, we've had a number of cyber events, uh,
- 2:00recently in the news that have been very troubling
- 2:02and it should really raise concern for everybody in health.
- 2:07It, um, it's, it's really troubling.
- 2:10And, um, and so as a result of that, I think we have
- 2:13to think about how our focus is ever changing, not just
- 2:17for the next upcoming 12 months,
- 2:18but for beyond what's the next threat, uh, so
- 2:22that we can ensure that the safety of our information
- 2:25and the safety of our patients is, is really preserved.
- 2:28So that's one of the major issues. And the second is ai.
- 2:31I, I think everybody's been talking about AI
- 2:33as if it's a buzzword
- 2:35and, um, there's various levels of,
- 2:37of artificial intelligence, machine learning,
- 2:40everything from simple to,
- 2:43to really aggressive, uh, computing.
- 2:46And, and I'm very interested in that.
- 2:48But I think the challenge there is how do we,
- 2:51how do we identify it, ensure that it's safe,
- 2:54make sure it's ethical,
- 2:55and then understand the cost that comes with it
- 2:58and what that cost is as it relates to an ever-growing cost
- 3:03of healthcare in the United States.
- 3:04So I think we've got a lot on our plate.
- 3:06If we take, if we take just those two, um,
- 3:11that's over the top of what I think has been
- 3:14what multiple decades of EMR rollout,
- 3:17where we're still looking very closely at how
- 3:20to make a physician and nurse and,
- 3:22and advanced provider everybody's job, try to make
- 3:26that more efficient and bring joy back to the medicine
- 3:28that we've, we've all, uh, grew up learning.
- 3:31I think that's really going to continue to be a challenge
- 3:34for every healthcare organization.
- 3:37Um, and how to do that, uh, effectively is really still
- 3:41right there on our mind.
- 3:43So those are the big things.
- 3:44Um, I hope that, I hope that helps.
- 3:47- Yeah, I think that's fascinating, especially
- 3:49as you mentioned, looking at cybersecurity, obviously trying
- 3:52to figure out what the next thing is going to be
- 3:54and then, um, the various stages of AI and,
- 3:57and what that means for healthcare organizations.
- 3:59I know so many different leaders across the country are
- 4:02taking various approaches to how the aggressive
- 4:05or not aggressive, they're approaching AI and,
- 4:07and what their teams can really do
- 4:09to make sure it's done safely.
- 4:10Um, it is just been fascinating to see that in addition
- 4:14to it, as you were talking about the EHR, um, how
- 4:17to make them more efficient, I think I've heard some
- 4:18leaders, you know, saying that 2024 is going to be, um,
- 4:23the era of optimization in terms of, you know,
- 4:25how do we really focus in on the few areas
- 4:27where we can make a big difference
- 4:28to optimize what we already have.
- 4:29And so it's just, it's really interesting
- 4:31to put all those things together.
- 4:33And from your perspective, do you see, um, you know,
- 4:37how do you, I guess, approach that strategy and,
- 4:39and really zero in on the spaces
- 4:40that are gonna be most effective, um,
- 4:42for the next 12 months or so?
- 4:45- Well, I think that, um, that's a very,
- 4:48it's a hard question to answer as it relates to generically,
- 4:51uh, from the advocate health perspective.
- 4:54It's a little bit easier in so much that we know
- 4:58where we have our strategic goals
- 5:00and we, we know where we want to deliver better healthcare,
- 5:03a higher quality of healthcare in a way
- 5:06that is in some ways unique because of who we are.
- 5:10Um, it, it, it, it is not a holding company of lots
- 5:13of different variations of healthcare
- 5:15that are all cobbled together under one brand.
- 5:18We're really looking to deliver care in a single,
- 5:21unified way and to provide that care equally
- 5:25and effectively for all.
- 5:27And that, that is a very interesting challenge for us.
- 5:30So not only are we trying to figure out how
- 5:33to make it standard across, uh, the environment so
- 5:36that no matter if you are to hit rural Illinois
- 5:40or uh, central Georgia, it,
- 5:42you get the same exact healthcare
- 5:44that you would get in downtown Chicago
- 5:46or downtown Charlotte.
- 5:48Um, so I think we are really trying to make sure that we
- 5:51look at where we can impact that healthcare delivery.
- 5:56And so that excites me and
- 5:57and how we do that is, is multifactorial.
- 6:00You have to have the operational buy-in for that.
- 6:03And, and I'm excited, uh, that our leaders are, our,
- 6:06our operational leaders are very excited about that.
- 6:09Um, and you have to have a really good data strategy,
- 6:12and we have great folks working, uh,
- 6:15to deliver data across the enterprise, which, uh,
- 6:19is getting better and better
- 6:20and allows us to be really insightful as to where we,
- 6:23where we try to make that impact.
- 6:25So I, I think it is really going
- 6:27to be a year of optimization.
- 6:28I would agree with that. And then the question is, is
- 6:30where do you make your optimization?
- 6:32Clearly, I don't think any healthcare organization
- 6:35of our size has the ability
- 6:36to make optimization changes in every space,
- 6:39but being targeted and strategic as to
- 6:41where you make those changes is really
- 6:44what's exciting to me.
- 6:46- That makes a lot of sense. And you know, it's a lot
- 6:48to be excited about, I think, for the future.
- 6:50Is there anything that makes you nervous?
- 6:53- Well, I think that, um, both the cybersecurity
- 6:56and healthcare finance makes
- 6:58everybody in healthcare nervous.
- 7:00Um, I think we saw coming out of a conference, um, a couple
- 7:04of weeks ago, like, there's going
- 7:06to be a lot of change in healthcare.
- 7:08I think that's would be foolish to be
- 7:12getting yourself.
- 7:14You really have to be ready for change.
- 7:16Um, my hope is that we're able to change in a positive way
- 7:19that continues to help us, um, be financially viable.
- 7:24We've obviously watched over the last decade a number
- 7:26of hospitals, uh, particularly in our rural areas, close
- 7:29because they can't make ends meet.
- 7:33Um, so healthcare finance makes me a little nervous.
- 7:36I wanna make sure that we are very mindful about
- 7:39how we deliver care
- 7:41and deliver it in a frugal way that
- 7:43that has the best outcomes for patients.
- 7:46Um, and, and obviously anything like in the cybersecurity
- 7:50realm that that takes away from that just slows us down
- 7:55and harms, harms healthcare as a whole.
- 7:57So I think those are the two things that make me nervous.
- 8:01The rest of it I think is just challenging and exciting and,
- 8:04and I look forward to that.
- 8:06- That's absolutely, I I think that would certainly align
- 8:09with a lot of, uh, um, other executives in,
- 8:12in looking at especially, um, finances
- 8:14and cybersecurity as areas, you know,
- 8:16that keep a good number of people up at night.
- 8:19Uh, when, you know, kind
- 8:20of considering all these trends we've talked about, um,
- 8:22in looking ahead, what do you think most successful
- 8:26healthcare leaders will need over the next two
- 8:27to three years or so to really continue
- 8:30to grow the organizations and, and be successful?
- 8:33- I think the first, uh, thing I would
- 8:35respond is resilience.
- 8:37I think there will be a tremendous amount of change.
- 8:39Not all of it, uh, , not all
- 8:41of it you might sign up for.
- 8:43And so to have the fortitude to hang in there
- 8:46and really set a strategic direction
- 8:48and be a little bit adaptable in the process
- 8:52takes a lot of resilience.
- 8:53Um, I, I think that, um,
- 8:57specifically from the IT perspective, it's going
- 8:59to take a lot of partnership work, um, both
- 9:03with vendors and internally.
- 9:05So when you look at trying
- 9:07to scale a simple thing across three
- 9:10or four hospitals, that's, that has a number of challenges.
- 9:13Scaling that over 67 hospitals in a number of states
- 9:17is very difficult.
- 9:18And so you have to have a really great
- 9:20operational partnership.
- 9:22You have to have a lot of trust within our leadership
- 9:25and, um, I really think that will will drive
- 9:29healthcare systems to be successful over the next two years.
- 9:33Uh, anything short of that.
- 9:34And I think they're gonna struggle.
- 9:36And so that would be my advice
- 9:38and my hope, um, in the same sentence.
- 9:43- Dr. Sullivan, thank you so much
- 9:44for joining us on the podcast today.
- 9:45This has been a really fun and fascinating conversation
- 9:48and I look forward to connecting with you again soon.
- 9:51- Laura, thank you so much for having me.
