SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Wholehearted Woman Podcast.
• 0:05
SPEAKER_00: I'm Kristen Ray, and I'm so glad you're here.
• 0:08
SPEAKER_00: This is a Christ-centered space where faith meets emotional healing and the quiet, faithful work of heart restoration.
• 0:15
SPEAKER_00: A space for the woman who loves God and is beginning to realize that loving God and feeling whole inside are not always the same thing.
• 0:24
SPEAKER_00: If you've been walking with me through these last few episodes, we have been going somewhere together.
• 0:29
SPEAKER_00: We've talked about the inner world, the three layers beneath the surface, the quiet fear underneath the patterns.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the last episode, I planted a seed.
• 0:39
SPEAKER_00: I said there was one more mask that fear wears, one that may be the hardest to recognize because it looks the most like faithfulness.
• 0:49
  SPEAKER_00: Today we go there.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_00: I want to start with a Sunday morning, not a dramatic one, just a regular one.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_00: You get up, you get ready, you get everyone else ready if that's the season in your life, you drive to church, you walk in, you smile at the people you know, you find your seat, and the worship starts and you sing.
• 1:11
SPEAKER_00: And somewhere in the middle of the second song, while your mouth is forming the words, something inside you is somewhere else entirely.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_00: You're thinking about the conversation you had last night that didn't resolve.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_00: You're carrying the thing you didn't say and now it's sitting in your chest.
• 1:28
SPEAKER_00: You're holding the anxiety that started before you even got out of bed this morning.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_00: You're wondering if the person too rose up noticed something was off with you.
• 1:37
SPEAKER_00: You're performing the motions of worship while something inside you is quietly falling apart, and nobody knows because you are very good at this.
• 1:47
SPEAKER_00: You have been very good at this for a very long time.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_00: Or maybe it's not Sunday morning for you.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's the small group where you give the right answers.
• 1:56
SPEAKER_00: The Bible study where you share just enough to seem vulnerable, but not enough to be truly seen.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: The friendship where you ask how she's doing because it keeps the focus off of you.
• 2:07
SPEAKER_00: The prayer request you've never voiced because you don't know how to say it without unraveling.
• 2:14
SPEAKER_00: The performance looks different for every woman, but the experience underneath it is the same.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_00: You are present, you are faithful, you are showing up, and you are not fully okay, and no one knows.
• 2:27
SPEAKER_00: Can I ask you something gently?
• 2:29
SPEAKER_00: When was the last time someone asked how you were and you told them the truth?
• 2:35
SPEAKER_00: Not the managed truth, not the I'm good, just tired truth, not the truth edited for public consumption, the real truth.
• 2:44
SPEAKER_00: The one that lives in the quiet after everyone has gone to bed, the one that surfaces in the car alone, the one you've never quite said out loud because you're not sure what would happen if you did.
• 2:55
SPEAKER_00: For many of us, that truth has never been spoken.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: Not because you don't want to be known, but because something somewhere along the way you learned that being fully known was not fully safe.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_00: And so you learned to perform.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: Last episode we talked about the quiet fear that lives underneath so much of our exhaustion.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_00: Fear that looks like control, overthinking, fear that looks like the yes that should have been a no.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_00: Today I want to show you one more face of that fear.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: The most sophisticated one, the most socially accepted one, the one most celebrated in church, the performance.
• 3:34
SPEAKER_00: Because here is what I've come to understand.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_00: The performing heart is fear with excellent manners.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_00: It has learned exactly how to show up, exactly what to say, exactly how to reveal, exactly how to appear whole while something very different is happening within.
• 3:53
  SPEAKER_00: And it's exhausting.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_00: Not just emotionally exhausting, soul exhausting.
• 3:59
SPEAKER_00: The kind of exhaustion that comes from the constant, relentless work of managing how you are perceived while quietly carrying what you actually feel.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_00: Let me show you what the performing heart does because I want you to recognize it, not to shame it, but to name it.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_00: Because what you can name, you can bring to God.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_00: She doesn't lie exactly, but she curates.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_00: She decides what parts of her story are safe to share and what parts stay hidden.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_00: She gives people the version of herself that is most likely to be accepted, and she keeps the rest protected.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_00: She calls it being private.
• 4:37
SPEAKER_00: She calls it not wanting to be a burden.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_00: But underneath it is a calculation.
• 4:43
SPEAKER_00: If they saw all of me, would they all stay?
• 4:46
SPEAKER_00: She works hard, she serves faithfully, she shows up consistently, and somewhere underneath all of that good and faithful work, there is a question driving it.
• 4:57
SPEAKER_00: If I do enough, will I finally feel like I'm enough?
• 5:00
SPEAKER_00: She calls it dedication, she calls it calling, she calls it obedience, but underneath it is a heart trying to earn what can only be received.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_00: When someone gets close, when a conversation starts to go somewhere real, she redirects.
• 5:16
  SPEAKER_00: She asks a question.
• 5:17
SPEAKER_00: She changes the subject, she makes a joke, she shifts the focus back to the other person.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_00: She calls it being a good listener.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_00: She calls it not making everything about her.
• 5:29
SPEAKER_00: But underneath it is the quiet terror of being truly seen and found lacking.
• 5:34
SPEAKER_00: Which one of those felt familiar to you?
• 5:37
  SPEAKER_00: Maybe all three.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_00: Maybe in different relationships, different times in your life, different rooms.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_00: And maybe right now something in you is recognizing itself and also feeling a little exposed.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_00: But I want you to hear something before we go further.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_00: The performing heart is not a bad heart.
• 5:55
SPEAKER_00: It is a heart that learned to survive in environments where being fully known felt risky.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_00: It is a heart that adapted, that became skilled, that found a way to stay connected to people while also staying protected from them.
• 6:09
SPEAKER_00: And that's not weakness, that's wisdom for a season.
• 6:13
SPEAKER_00: But God is not calling you to survive anymore.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_00: He is not calling you to perform for him either.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_00: Now I want to take you to a story in Luke 13, verse 10 through 13.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_00: On a Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for 18 years.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_00: She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_00: When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_00: Then he put his hand on her and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_00: I want you to see something in the story that most people don't stop long enough to notice.
• 6:51
SPEAKER_00: This woman was in the synagogue.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_00: She showed up on the Sabbath, the holy day, the day of worship.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_00: She was there, bent over, unable to straighten up for 18 years.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_00: And she was there anyway.
• 7:07
SPEAKER_00: She didn't stay home because she wasn't whole.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_00: She didn't wait until she was better to show up.
• 7:12
SPEAKER_00: She came bent, limited, carrying something that shaped her entire posture, and she came anyway.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_00: I believe this woman knew how to show up while not being okay.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_00: I believe she had learned the way so many of us learn how to be present while carrying something invisible to everyone around her.
• 7:31
  SPEAKER_00: But Jesus saw her.
• 7:32
SPEAKER_00: Not after she announced herself, not after she asked for help, not after she performed her way to the front.
• 7:40
  SPEAKER_00: He saw her.
• 7:42
SPEAKER_00: While she was still bent, while she was still carrying it, while she was still in the middle of the synagogue doing the best she could.
• 7:51
SPEAKER_00: Woman, you are set free.
• 7:53
SPEAKER_00: Not woman, why didn't you ask sooner?
• 7:55
SPEAKER_00: Not woman, you should have come to me before now.
• 7:59
SPEAKER_00: Not woman, I see you've been managing this on your own.
• 8:03
SPEAKER_00: Just you are set free.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_00: And immediately she straightened up.
• 8:08
SPEAKER_00: Here is what I want you to receive from this story.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_00: Jesus is not waiting for you to stop performing before he meets you.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_00: He sees you right now in the middle of the synagogue, in the middle of the worship service, in the middle of the small group, in the middle of the smile you put on this morning, bent over, something nobody else can see.
• 8:29
SPEAKER_00: And he is not asking you to announce it to the room.
• 8:32
SPEAKER_00: He is simply saying, I see you.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_00: You are not too bent to be set free.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_00: Now I want to bring in a verse from Psalm 51, verse 6.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_00: Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part you will make me to know wisdom.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_00: David wrote this in one of his most broken moments, and what he says about God stops me every time.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_00: You desire truth in the inward parts, not the performed parts, not the edited parts, not the curated, public facing, have it all together parts, the inward parts, the hidden places, the places nobody sees, the places you've been protecting with the performance.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_00: That is what God is after.
• 9:15
SPEAKER_00: Not your best presentation of yourself, your truth.
• 9:19
SPEAKER_00: And here is the beautiful, almost undoing thing about this verse.
• 9:23
SPEAKER_00: God doesn't desire truth in the inward part so he can expose you.
• 9:31
SPEAKER_00: In the hidden part, you will make me to know wisdom.
• 9:36
SPEAKER_00: The healing doesn't happen on the surface, it happens in the hidden place, where the performance ends, where the editing stops, where you stop managing how you appear and simply tell him the truth.
• 9:49
SPEAKER_00: That is where wisdom enters.
• 9:51
SPEAKER_00: That is where healing begins.
• 9:53
SPEAKER_00: That is where the bent woman straightens up.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_00: The performing heart didn't develop randomly.
• 10:00
SPEAKER_00: At some point, your heart made a conclusion.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was formed in a home where emotions weren't safe, where certain feelings were too much for the people around you, where being strong was praised and being vulnerable was ignored or punished.
• 10:15
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was formed in a church environment where having it all together was the unspoken expectation, where struggle was something you prayed through privately and never brought out into the open.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was formed in a relationship where being fully known led to being hurt, and you'll never do that again, or where your realness was used against you, where you learned it's safer to be a version of myself than all of myself.
• 10:41
SPEAKER_00: And so the performance began, not as manipulation and not as deception, as protection.
• 10:48
SPEAKER_00: Your heart was trying to stay connected to people while also staying safe from them, and it found a way.
• 10:54
SPEAKER_00: But once protected, you may now be what's keeping you from the depth of connection with God and with others that your heart was actually created for.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_00: Because you cannot be fully loved in the places you keep hidden, and you were created to be fully loved.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_00: So I want to say something that I think will land differently depending on where you are in your journey with God.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_00: First of all, God is not impressed by the performance.
• 11:18
SPEAKER_00: I know that sounds simple, maybe even obvious, but for a woman who has been performing for God without fully realizing it, who has been showing up, serving faithfully, saying all the right things, doing all the right things, while quietly carrying something she's never brought to him.
• 11:35
SPEAKER_00: That sentence is not simple at all.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_00: God is not impressed by the performance.
• 11:41
SPEAKER_00: He is after the inward parts, he is after the hidden place, he is after the real you, the one underneath the editing, underneath the curation, underneath the smile you put on before you walked into the room.
• 11:54
SPEAKER_00: And here is the most tender thing I want you to hear today.
• 11:57
SPEAKER_00: He already knows what's there.
• 11:59
  SPEAKER_00: He has always known.
• 12:00
SPEAKER_00: He was never fooled by the performance, and he has been waiting patiently, faithfully, without pressure, for you to stop performing for him and simply come to him.
• 12:13
SPEAKER_00: As you are, bent over and all.
• 12:16
SPEAKER_00: Before we move toward prayer, I want to give you something to carry into your week.
• 12:21
SPEAKER_00: This week I want to invite you to find one moment, just one, where you tell the truth.
• 12:27
SPEAKER_00: Not to the whole room and not in a way that feels unsafe, but somewhere.
• 12:31
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's in your journal, maybe it's in your car alone with God.
• 12:35
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's with one trusted person who has earned that place in your life.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_00: And in that moment, instead of the managed version, instead of the edited truth, say something real.
• 12:46
SPEAKER_00: Say, I'm not okay right now, I'm really not.
• 12:49
SPEAKER_00: I have been carrying this and I don't know what to do with it.
• 12:52
SPEAKER_00: I have been performing and I am tired and I want it to stop.
• 12:56
SPEAKER_00: Just once, because every journey toward wholeness begins with one moment of truth in the hidden place.
• 13:03
SPEAKER_00: And God always meets you there every time.
• 13:06
SPEAKER_00: If something in this episode is stirring in you, if you're beginning to recognize the performing heart in yourself, I'd like to invite you to take the next step.
• 13:15
SPEAKER_00: I have a free guide called the Whole Hearted Woman Starter Guide, a guided journey into the hidden places of your heart.
• 13:22
SPEAKER_00: It's your first step into the inner chambers of the heart.
• 13:25
SPEAKER_00: I'll gently walk with you through the five movements of the whole hearted woman journey, including the identity step, where we begin to discover who God says you are beneath everything the performance has been protecting.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_00: Because the performing heart is always protecting something.
• 13:42
SPEAKER_00: And what is protecting is a belief about who you are that God wants to speak truth into.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_00: I put the link in the show notes.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_00: You don't have to keep performing, not for people and not for God.
• 13:53
SPEAKER_00: And before we pray, we've talked today about the performing heart and why it's formed.
• 13:58
SPEAKER_00: And here's the question I want to leave you with for the week.
• 14:00
SPEAKER_00: If the performance is protecting something, what is it protecting?
• 14:05
SPEAKER_00: Because underneath the performing heart is almost always a belief, a belief about who you are, about whether you are truly lovable as you actually are, about whether God, the real God, not the one you've been performing for, actually accepts the real you.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_00: Next episode, we're going to begin talking about identity, not identity as a concept and not a list of who I am in Christ statements, but the deep, quiet, often painful question that lives underneath the performance.
• 14:37
SPEAKER_00: Who am I really when the performance stops?
• 14:41
SPEAKER_00: If that question just landed somewhere in you, stay close.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_00: So I want to speak something over you right now.
• 14:49
SPEAKER_00: You're not the performance, you're not the edited version, you are not the curated presentation, you're not the smile you put on before you walked into the room.
• 14:59
SPEAKER_00: You are the woman underneath all of it, the one God has seen from the very beginning, and you are not too much.
• 15:07
SPEAKER_00: You're not too broken, you're not too far gone, you are exactly who God had in mind when he began this restoration.
• 15:15
SPEAKER_00: The performance kept you safe for a season, but you were never meant to live there permanently.
• 15:21
SPEAKER_00: You were meant to be known fully, completely, without editing, by a God whose love does not require your best performance, only your honest heart.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_00: And your honest heart, exactly as it is right now, is enough to begin.
• 15:37
SPEAKER_00: So, Father, you see her.
• 15:39
SPEAKER_00: You see the smile she put on this morning, you see the answer she gave when someone asked how she was, you see the prayer request she didn't voice because she didn't know how to say it without unraveling.
• 15:50
SPEAKER_00: You see the performing heart, and you are not disappointed by it.
• 15:54
SPEAKER_00: You understand exactly how it formed.
• 15:56
SPEAKER_00: You know every moment that taught her it was safer to be a version of herself than all of herself.
• 16:02
SPEAKER_00: And you have been waiting patiently, faithfully, without pressure for this very moment, the moment she stops performing for you and simply comes to you.
• 16:11
SPEAKER_00: Lord, meet her in the hidden place today, not the place she shows the world, but the place she shows no one.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_00: The inward parts where you desire truth and where you promise wisdom.
• 16:23
SPEAKER_00: Speak into that place today.
• 16:25
SPEAKER_00: Tell her what you actually think of her, not the performed version, but the real one, the bent over, carrying something invisible showing up anyway, one.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_00: Tell her what you told the woman in the synagogue.
• 16:38
SPEAKER_00: Woman, you are set free.
• 16:40
SPEAKER_00: Not after she performs her way to freedom, not after she earns the right to be seen, but right now, as she is, bent and present and yours.
• 16:50
SPEAKER_00: Begin the working of straightening what has been bent.
• 16:53
SPEAKER_00: Begin the work of healing what has been hidden.
• 16:56
SPEAKER_00: Begin the work of replacing the performance with the deep, settled, unshakable knowing that she is loved.
• 17:03
SPEAKER_00: Not for what she does, but for who she is, your daughter, your beloved, yours.
• 17:10
  SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name, amen.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_00: Thank you for showing up today.
• 17:15
SPEAKER_00: Maybe bent over something nobody else can see, maybe carrying something you haven't said out loud yet, maybe performing your way through the week and hoping nobody notices the weight of it, but you showed up anyway, and that matters.
• 17:28
SPEAKER_00: Jesus saw the woman in the synagogue before she ever said a word.
• 17:32
  SPEAKER_00: He sees you too.
• 17:34
SPEAKER_00: And he is not waiting for you to straighten up before he calls you forward.
• 17:38
SPEAKER_00: He is calling you forward so he can straighten you up.
• 17:41
SPEAKER_00: If this episode found you today, would you share it with a woman in your life who you sense is showing up faithfully and quietly carrying something heavy?
• 17:50
SPEAKER_00: You don't have to say anything complicated.
• 17:52
SPEAKER_00: Just send it and say, here, I thought of you.
• 17:56
  SPEAKER_00: Show me a lie.
• 17:57
SPEAKER_00: And if you haven't yet, follow or subscribe to the Whole Hearted Women podcast so you don't miss what's coming up.
• 18:02
SPEAKER_00: Because next week we are going somewhere that I believe will change the way you see yourself and you're already ready for it.
• 18:09
  SPEAKER_00: See you next time.
