- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining me in the studio right now is Joel Morrison,
- 0:03Speaker 1: who is indeed the CEO of NT Cricket. Good morning
- 0:06Speaker 1: to you, Joel, Good morning Katy.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Great to be with you, Great.
- 0:08Speaker 1: To see you.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Yesterday I think it was, or maybe it was the
- 0:11Speaker 1: day before. Now it must have been yesterday. It's only
- 0:13Speaker 1: true history. I keeping day the week. It is yesterday.
- 0:16Speaker 1: We'd started to get a couple of messages from our
- 0:19Speaker 1: listeners wondering what is going on with the T twenty cricket.
- 0:23Speaker 1: They said, come on, Welphie, can you tell us exactly
- 0:26Speaker 1: when it's kicking off, where we need to be all
- 0:28Speaker 1: that kind of stuff because they're excited.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Well, I'm here for you, Katie, because we've got a
- 0:32Speaker 2: massive festival of cricket coming up which gets underway on Thursday.
- 0:35Speaker 2: It's our CU top end T twenty, which you'll see
- 0:38Speaker 2: eleven straight days and nights of cricket with the Melbourne
- 0:42Speaker 2: Renegades in town, with the Melbourne Stars taking on the
- 0:44Speaker 2: Northern Territory, a Cricket Australia Invitational eleven and Papua New
- 0:48Speaker 2: Guinea battling it all out.
- 0:50Speaker 1: How cool? So how many players are we talking being
- 0:52Speaker 1: in the Territory.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Well there's the five teams and there's probably between
- 0:56Speaker 2: thirteen and fourteen players, So do the mass because I'm
- 0:58Speaker 2: terrible at mask. But there's a lot going on and
- 1:00Speaker 2: it forms the second and final installment of the Cricket
- 1:04Speaker 2: three to six five program this year, which has been
- 1:06Speaker 2: running since June. We just had the CDU Strike League
- 1:08Speaker 2: conclude on the weekend with a thrilling and fifty over
- 1:11Speaker 2: final between the Southern Storm and the Northern Tide and
- 1:13Speaker 2: a number of those players will now be selected for
- 1:15Speaker 2: the NT or the Cricket Australia eleven and then take
- 1:18Speaker 2: on these teams from the Big Bash League and PNG
- 1:20Speaker 2: who have previously played in a T twenty World Cup.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah right, so we're talking some big names going to
- 1:25Speaker 1: be here.
- 1:25Speaker 2: That's right. So we've got Darcy Short who's returned home
- 1:28Speaker 2: to play for the Northern Territory, who plays for the
- 1:30Speaker 2: hoe By Hurricanes and has played for Australia. Are the
- 1:32Speaker 2: names like Jake Fraser McGirk, Chris Tremaine, Mackenzie, Harvey, Tom Rodgers,
- 1:36Speaker 2: Nick Clark and so some big names who run arounds
- 1:38Speaker 2: on the domestic scene and play in the Big Bash
- 1:40Speaker 2: League and State cricket too.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Now I know that, I know that a lot of
- 1:43Speaker 1: people listening going to be thinking, all right, when do
- 1:45Speaker 1: I need to get there? How much is it going
- 1:47Speaker 1: to cost? How can I catch all the action? So
- 1:49Speaker 1: talk us through all of that as well.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Joel, absolutely, Well, the easiest thing to do is head
- 1:53Speaker 2: to nt crickets dot com a U all the informations there.
- 1:57Speaker 2: But from this Thursday we go eleven days and nights
- 2:01Speaker 2: straight of T twenty cricket. So every single night six
- 2:04Speaker 2: o'clock at DX Arena, except for Sundays, we'll be playing
- 2:08Speaker 2: at Gardens Oval and it'll be afternoon matches. So if
- 2:11Speaker 2: you want to get along and check out some great
- 2:13Speaker 2: games of cricket, there's plenty going on. You'll have plenty
- 2:16Speaker 2: of options and all the details on how to buy
- 2:18Speaker 2: tickets are on the website. And it's only ten dollars
- 2:21Speaker 2: for an adult under tens free and twenty dollars for
- 2:24Speaker 2: a family.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Oh that's wonderful, very affordable for people to be able
- 2:27Speaker 1: to head along and you know, catch what is going
- 2:29Speaker 1: to be some fantastic sport right here in the Northern Territory.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You've had a busy year. I mean, cricket in the
- 2:34Speaker 1: Northern territories had a massive year. Really, how great do
- 2:38Speaker 1: you think it is? You know, to see these types
- 2:40Speaker 1: of games happening here in the territory.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So important because not only does it highlight and promote
- 2:45Speaker 2: Darwin as a destination, it allows our young boys and
- 2:49Speaker 2: girls to rub shoulders with their heroes. But really importantly,
- 2:52Speaker 2: because we own and operate the Cricket three six five program,
- 2:55Speaker 2: we're able to put our territory players, coaches and match
- 2:58Speaker 2: officials into the games as well to help them have
- 3:00Speaker 2: a pathway to a level cricket so so important for
- 3:04Speaker 2: us in terms of normally it's a challenge with cricket
- 3:06Speaker 2: because we play out of sync with the rest of
- 3:08Speaker 2: the country in Darwin because of the dry season, wet season.
- 3:11Speaker 2: It's not possible with the monsoon rain we get over
- 3:13Speaker 2: the summer the play cricket. So normally you wouldn't get
- 3:16Speaker 2: the chance to rub shoals with those heroes and pathways
- 3:18Speaker 2: can be a challenge. But with the Cricket three to
- 3:20Speaker 2: six fire program being in place now for the last
- 3:22Speaker 2: two years, heroes are in our backyard, great pathways and
- 3:25Speaker 2: we're seeing a lot of young territories really shine on
- 3:28Speaker 2: the stage. That's been great.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Stall. Yeah, that is such a wonderful thing to see.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And then when you talk about that, like at the
- 3:33Speaker 1: junior level, have you seen like a ballooning of numbers
- 3:37Speaker 1: in terms of people wanting to come and learn how
- 3:39Speaker 1: to play cricket.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Most definitely credit to all the clubs and the volunteers
- 3:43Speaker 2: and the Darwin and District's cricket competition. Over the last decade,
- 3:46Speaker 2: junior numbers are going north. We've seen our women's competition
- 3:51Speaker 2: grow from having no teams about five years ago to
- 3:55Speaker 2: now every single club has a women's team in the competition,
- 3:57Speaker 2: so it's been great to see. And even with our
- 3:59Speaker 2: senior men teams as well, those numbers are growing too,
- 4:01Speaker 2: So that the clubs and the volunteers that be commended
- 4:03Speaker 2: for their wonderful job they're doing.
- 4:05Speaker 1: That is wonderful to hear. So now with the T
- 4:08Speaker 1: twenty cricket, obviously everybody can go to Ntcricket dot com
- 4:11Speaker 1: dot au to get all of that info. What's next,
- 4:14Speaker 1: what's coming up, what's still to go this year?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Well, after Cricket three six five, we head into the
- 4:19Speaker 2: final series for local crickets, so it's getting really tight
- 4:22Speaker 2: a table across all grades, so people will be looking
- 4:25Speaker 2: forward to finals. And then we move into the Alice
- 4:27Speaker 2: Springs season which gets played over summer, so cricket never
- 4:30Speaker 2: stops in the Northern Territory. We love that that goes
- 4:32Speaker 2: year rounds. And then we also have our underage teams
- 4:35Speaker 2: which go down and play in the National Championship, so
- 4:37Speaker 2: still plenty on that's where we work our way finally
- 4:39Speaker 2: to Christmas good stuff.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Well, Joel, I love sport, I love all sports, and
- 4:44Speaker 1: I think it's fantastic what's going on at the moment
- 4:46Speaker 1: with cricket. I know that a lot of our listeners
- 4:48Speaker 1: are going to be very pleased to get that further information.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And no doubt you get plenty of crowds there at
- 4:52Speaker 1: the cricket over the coming days and.
- 4:54Speaker 2: T twenty is the perfect vehicle for that. Will have matches,
- 4:57Speaker 2: under lights, will have fireworks at the NT games. We'll
- 5:00Speaker 2: have some food trucks as well, so come along give
- 5:02Speaker 2: it a go. And I know you're an the merging
- 5:04Speaker 2: cricket fan, Ktie, so I've got a family pass here
- 5:06Speaker 2: for you with a fixture so you can identify when
- 5:08Speaker 2: you want to take the family down and we'd love
- 5:10Speaker 2: to host you there and many others from across Duh
- 5:13Speaker 2: and get down and support the territory as we take
- 5:15Speaker 2: on some of the best players in the country.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Well, you know that I like to have my kids
- 5:18Speaker 1: at as many sports, as many sports as possible. My
- 5:22Speaker 1: aim is to keep them out of trouble as they
- 5:24Speaker 1: get older, and the busier they are, the better it is.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I think.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think the great news for your kids as well
- 5:29Speaker 2: as there's plenty of space at Dex Area so they
- 5:31Speaker 2: can run around, we can hype them up on sugar
- 5:33Speaker 2: and they can watch a great cricket as well, and
- 5:35Speaker 2: you can relax on the hill and have a great evening.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Absolutely, oh Joel, it's always wonderful to catch up with
- 5:39Speaker 1: you mate. Thanks so much for joining us in the
- 5:41Speaker 1: studio this morning anytime. Thanks you
