- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome into Brewer Territory, part of the Foul
- 0:07Speaker 1: Territory Network. I'm your host Kurt Hogue. Corey Cannable is
- 0:11Speaker 1: with me as well, and we have a special guest today. Corey,
- 0:15Speaker 1: you are a seventeen NASH League All Star, as I
- 0:17Speaker 1: often recognize you as the start of this we have
- 0:20Speaker 1: another All Star, your former teammate Big Woo Woody Brandon
- 0:24Speaker 1: Woodruff joining us live from beautiful Sunny.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's sunny.
- 0:28Speaker 1: It's sunny down there.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Not Sonny Son just went down.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It looked nice today from beautiful Arizona. How are you doing.
- 0:38Speaker 1: How's spring going?
- 0:39Speaker 3: It's good, man, just another year. This is.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Twelve year now. Gosh, that's going by fast. But just
- 0:49Speaker 4: getting ready for a new season.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Man, It's.
- 0:52Speaker 4: It's a slow progression, but it's it's good. Just taking
- 0:57Speaker 4: a day at a time and getting the end of
- 0:59Speaker 4: spring training and then go right into the season.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yep, twelve year man, in ten years in the big
- 1:06Speaker 2: leagues with the Brewers.
- 1:08Speaker 3: All right, Yeah, this'll be my tenth season.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeap in season with the Brewers. Two All Stars nineteen
- 1:14Speaker 2: to twenty one. Man, It's it's been one heck of
- 1:18Speaker 2: a ride, man.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Dude, it's uh, and it's going by too fast. That's
- 1:21Speaker 4: the problem.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Uh. You know, when you're when you're having.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Fun, those days fly by and uh, here we sit
- 1:28Speaker 4: and this is my yeah, gosh, twelve years dude. It's
- 1:33Speaker 4: I'm trying to get back to that level. Man, see
- 1:35Speaker 4: if I can get back to that level, and kind
- 1:36Speaker 4: of I don't. I don't want to say turn the
- 1:39Speaker 4: clock back a little bit, because I don't. I don't
- 1:40Speaker 4: feel I just turned thirty three, but I don't feel
- 1:42Speaker 4: thirty three. Uh, So I'm trying to, I guess, in
- 1:46Speaker 4: a sense, turn it back a little bit and see
- 1:47Speaker 4: if I can, you know, do it for a full season.
- 1:50Speaker 4: So I'm just, uh, that's that's my main goal this year.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Just be on the field whatever capacity.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Of course. Man, I mean you've look you throw hard
- 2:00Speaker 2: through gas. You got a banger of a slider. I mean,
- 2:04Speaker 2: obviously you know. The injuries, it's it's part of it.
- 2:07Speaker 2: And I know it's just kind of sidelined you a
- 2:09Speaker 2: couple of times, and especially now with your shoulder, but
- 2:13Speaker 2: I understand you know everything is starting to come back
- 2:16Speaker 2: and you're feeling great, still on still on point to
- 2:20Speaker 2: be good for opening day.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, so we're we're trending that way.
- 2:24Speaker 4: It's you know that the lapt strain at the end
- 2:28Speaker 4: of last year just was kind of a byproduct of
- 2:31Speaker 4: just a long year.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Man.
- 2:32Speaker 4: I'd gotten fatigued pretty much at the end, and yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 4: just kind of lost mechanics and and that was kind
- 2:39Speaker 4: of just a byproduct of just fatigue and had to
- 2:43Speaker 4: let that that lat train get held up this this
- 2:46Speaker 4: winter and before I could really you know, start giving
- 2:50Speaker 4: some good intent and building up and you know, once
- 2:53Speaker 4: that was kind of full go, then we set forth
- 2:55Speaker 4: a good plan with the medical staff and and you know,
- 2:58Speaker 4: Hooky and the pitching staff, and you know, it's it's
- 3:02Speaker 4: a it's a good plan. So as of right now,
- 3:05Speaker 4: we're just kind of on a slow, steady climb and
- 3:09Speaker 4: progressing through. You know, I don't really know what is
- 3:12Speaker 4: a normal spring training anymore, you know what I mean.
- 3:15Speaker 4: So it's uh normal for me. So it's yeah, it's
- 3:19Speaker 4: it's good. I feel good, and it's just uh checking
- 3:23Speaker 4: those boxes every week and just getting built up. So
- 3:26Speaker 4: I mean, you're sorry, Kurt, but you've been there.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Do you do your thing? We were talking before that
- 3:32Speaker 1: before the show started. I'm like dude, I what he
- 3:35Speaker 1: probably wants, no questions for me.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Oh you're good man.
- 3:38Speaker 1: We walk we walk in, we walk in there after
- 3:40Speaker 1: the game, and it's like not the.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Do think.
- 3:46Speaker 2: So yeah? No, I mean, look, obviously, you know, like
- 3:51Speaker 2: you said, twelve years with the Brewers, twelve years in
- 3:54Speaker 2: professional baseball, You've been there, done that. With spring training,
- 3:57Speaker 2: you also understand what spring training is, how important it
- 4:00Speaker 2: is to obviously the younger guys, and yeah obviously for
- 4:04Speaker 2: you too, you know, to get your innings in, start
- 4:06Speaker 2: getting ready. But you also understand how important it is
- 4:10Speaker 2: to stay healthy all season. Right, It's a long season.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It's tough to stay healthy all season. And we've seen
- 4:16Speaker 2: you know, your numbers on what you do in the
- 4:18Speaker 2: playoffs for the Brewers especially, And I mean I think
- 4:23Speaker 2: we would all agree that if when Wu is healthy
- 4:26Speaker 2: in the postseason, man, then the Brewers are dangerous. So
- 4:31Speaker 2: you know, that's one thing obviously I wanted to ask
- 4:33Speaker 2: you about. You know, your preparation going into it. You
- 4:38Speaker 2: know what what you kind of do when you lock in,
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know what you're doing to kind of take breaks. Obviously,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know with the pitch clock, and you know the
- 4:47Speaker 2: amount of times you can step off. I know there's
- 4:49Speaker 2: a lot of factors in it. Now, you know, what
- 4:51Speaker 2: have you done to kind of prepare yourself from in
- 4:54Speaker 2: twenty seventeen when you got called up to now?
- 4:57Speaker 3: Way different man? The game is.
- 4:59Speaker 4: You know, you feel like you hear those older guys
- 5:01Speaker 4: say the game has changed so much, but I mean
- 5:03Speaker 4: it really, it truly has. And spring training is all
- 5:09Speaker 4: about now. The more you go through it, the more
- 5:12Speaker 4: you really understand. Uh, it's all about getting ready. And
- 5:16Speaker 4: when I was younger, like I was, I was really
- 5:18Speaker 4: coming in and not that I'm not ready, but I
- 5:21Speaker 4: was coming in trying to earn a job. And you
- 5:26Speaker 4: see it now, you see it time and time again,
- 5:29Speaker 4: younger guys who may not may or may kind of
- 5:32Speaker 4: be on the fringe of the roster, and it's it's
- 5:34Speaker 4: trying to prove themselves.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And I you know, we all we've been there.
- 5:37Speaker 4: So but at this point in my career, you know,
- 5:42Speaker 4: I've I know, I've I've got a job.
- 5:44Speaker 3: So now my main priority.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Is is trying to build the building blocks, the foundation
- 5:49Speaker 4: in spring training to be able to last for the
- 5:51Speaker 4: whole season. And it's it's tough, it doesn't matter matter
- 5:55Speaker 4: who you are and how many times you go through it,
- 5:57Speaker 4: because every year is different. Your body change is you've
- 6:00Speaker 4: got to learn it on the fly essentially, and you
- 6:03Speaker 4: know you've got a good routine, but that changes over time,
- 6:06Speaker 4: and mine has changed a ton since shoulder surgery.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And you know, it's you really when you look back
- 6:15Speaker 3: on it, you really wouldn't trade it, you know what
- 6:17Speaker 3: I mean.
- 6:17Speaker 4: It's it's part of the game, it's part of the experience,
- 6:20Speaker 4: it's part of your growth in baseball. But you know, honestly,
- 6:26Speaker 4: I learned a long time ago, like preparation is the
- 6:30Speaker 4: biggest key in being ready for a major League baseball game.
- 6:35Speaker 4: It's I mean, you're facing the best hitters in the
- 6:37Speaker 4: world and it's not easy, but being prepared is one
- 6:40Speaker 4: thing you can control. And that's what I try to
- 6:44Speaker 4: fry myself on is just making sure I checked my
- 6:46Speaker 4: boxes in between starts of being prepared, looking at the hitters,
- 6:51Speaker 4: looking at you know, the scouting reports and and video
- 6:54Speaker 4: and making sure them get my body ready. And but yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 4: as far as getting locked in, man, I try to
- 7:01Speaker 4: stay as loose as possible up into about two and
- 7:05Speaker 4: a half hours for the game. I'll go in and
- 7:07Speaker 4: get me a good little nap. And when I when I,
- 7:09Speaker 4: when I come out of the nap, it's kind of like,
- 7:11Speaker 4: all right, it's time to get into a routine and
- 7:13Speaker 4: it's time to go and then and that's that's changed
- 7:17Speaker 4: a lot over the years.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Man.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I used to come in when I was younger, and
- 7:21Speaker 4: I would be mentally just worn down, absolutely worn down
- 7:25Speaker 4: after a game and uh, you know, just leading up
- 7:28Speaker 4: the whole day, trying to wait on the whole day,
- 7:30Speaker 4: and and uh so I've got better at that, and
- 7:33Speaker 4: that's you know, kids have helped that process a lot,
- 7:36Speaker 4: a lot more and well, yeah, just uh, the more
- 7:40Speaker 4: and more you stay in this game, you you realize
- 7:43Speaker 4: who you are as a player and and you know
- 7:47Speaker 4: what it takes to get ready. And it's been a
- 7:49Speaker 4: couple of years for me so in terms of in
- 7:54Speaker 4: terms of staying healthy. And last year was honestly, besides
- 7:57Speaker 4: the last train was was a.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Heck of a year.
- 8:00Speaker 4: And I try to really appreciate what happened last year,
- 8:03Speaker 4: and it was it was tough, and you know, missing
- 8:05Speaker 4: the playoffs again. But if I, if I truly sit
- 8:09Speaker 4: down and see, you know, Corey, you went through it
- 8:11Speaker 4: with with your stuff. It's it's not easy and there's
- 8:15Speaker 4: some some tough days and just to get through what
- 8:19Speaker 4: I got through last year, I could sit back and
- 8:21Speaker 4: appreciate that and now build off of that for this year.
- 8:27Speaker 5: The number one rated ticketing app is seat geek and
- 8:30Speaker 5: you can get ten percent off on seat geeks app
- 8:33Speaker 5: by using the code territory ten, So you should use it.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Aj Oh, I'm definitely going to use it for WBC
- 8:39Speaker 2: games in Miami because I want to go to the
- 8:40Speaker 2: semifinals in the finals.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And they sold out absolutely.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Spring training games for the people out there who want
- 8:45Speaker 2: to go to spring training games, absolutely great idea. Best
- 8:48Speaker 2: seats rated one through ten, and I.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Recently had to use seageek to buy tickets to a
- 8:51Speaker 1: Florida Gators basketball game that was sold out.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So I love the code territory ten percent off and
- 8:57Speaker 2: the rating is the best.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Yes, he's talking about each ticket rated on a scale
- 9:00Speaker 5: of one to ten, so you know you're getting a
- 9:02Speaker 5: good deal. So look for the green dots. Green means good,
- 9:04Speaker 5: red means bad. And of course we have a code
- 9:07Speaker 5: for you. Like I mentioned, it's Territory ten for ten
- 9:11Speaker 5: percent off your next set of tickets.
- 9:12Speaker 3: At Sea Geek.
- 9:13Speaker 5: That's ten percent off any tickets with promo code t
- 9:16Speaker 5: E R R I O R Y one zero. Make
- 9:19Speaker 5: sure you click the link in the description and download
- 9:21Speaker 5: the app and have the code automatically added to your account.
- 9:24Speaker 3: So you can use it later. Thank you to see Geek.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I think Wood he just put some perspective. I think
- 9:31Speaker 1: it was appreciated. I do feel like people really enjoyed
- 9:36Speaker 1: not just your season, but the season you guys had
- 9:40Speaker 1: as a whole. Just just looking at the reaction, I'm
- 9:43Speaker 1: sure you guys felt that too, especially in the second half.
- 9:45Speaker 1: As you know, the ballpark was sold out on it
- 9:48Speaker 1: like a you know, Friday night against the Marlins or
- 9:51Speaker 1: a Thursday night. You got thirty five thousand, So that
- 9:54Speaker 1: was that was That was pretty pretty special to watch
- 9:57Speaker 1: you guys last year. Now, you said something there about
- 10:01Speaker 1: you know you've got a job now, and that much
- 10:02Speaker 1: is very true. You're on a pitching staff where a
- 10:04Speaker 1: lot of guys, you know, maybe some of them feel like.
- 10:07Speaker 2: They they've got a job.
- 10:08Speaker 1: But really no one really has that big league experience.
- 10:12Speaker 1: But so you've got the job. What I'm curious about
- 10:15Speaker 1: is is heading going back to the offseason when you
- 10:18Speaker 1: got when you got that job, when you sign this
- 10:20Speaker 1: deal with the Brewers, Right, so there's that little period
- 10:21Speaker 1: of time where you've got the qualifying offer extended and
- 10:25Speaker 1: you can kind of feel out maybe what your market is.
- 10:28Speaker 1: What does that look like for you? How do you
- 10:31Speaker 1: weigh this versus like, you know, we see starting pitchers
- 10:34Speaker 1: get multi year deals pretty regularly, like there's there's a
- 10:38Speaker 1: premium for what you guys can do. And then also
- 10:41Speaker 1: on top of that two part question, do you like,
- 10:44Speaker 1: do you feel any pressure and any added pressure compared
- 10:47Speaker 1: to just, you know, the standard pressure of being a
- 10:49Speaker 1: big leaguer with the price tag that comes with a
- 10:52Speaker 1: contract like that in Milwaukee.
- 10:54Speaker 4: I'll answer that question first because I've already been asked
- 10:57Speaker 4: that a few times and the answer is no, I
- 11:00Speaker 4: don't feel any more pressure. And it's it's a thing
- 11:05Speaker 4: that it just comes along. It's the it's it's part
- 11:08Speaker 4: of the game. It's part of the territory. Like if
- 11:10Speaker 4: you go out and you do well, that's that's what's
- 11:12Speaker 4: supposed to happen. And so I don't feel any extra pressure.
- 11:16Speaker 4: And you know, it's at the end of the day,
- 11:19Speaker 4: it's baseball. I'm going to prepare and do the same
- 11:22Speaker 4: things I've done for you know, twelve years, even though
- 11:26Speaker 4: it's changed over time. I'm still gonna prepare myself to
- 11:29Speaker 4: go out and pitch and and and and you know,
- 11:32Speaker 4: play the game. So that part of it never changes.
- 11:37Speaker 4: So there's comfort in that. There's comfort in this. You're
- 11:40Speaker 4: just going to play baseball, man, and uh, you're gonna
- 11:43Speaker 4: do the same things you do, you know. And but
- 11:46Speaker 4: to answer your you know first question, that's uh. Once
- 11:51Speaker 4: once the qualifying offer was extended to me, you know,
- 11:54Speaker 4: we have twelve days there to make a decision. And
- 11:57Speaker 4: to be quite honest, after about fourt as, I had
- 12:01Speaker 4: a pretty good understanding.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Of what was going to happen.
- 12:05Speaker 4: But you know, myself and my agent, we did our
- 12:09Speaker 4: due diligence and be able to see kind of what
- 12:10Speaker 4: the market was. And and it's so early in the
- 12:13Speaker 4: off season that teams are I wouldn't say they're not
- 12:16Speaker 4: prepared for for signing free agents, but.
- 12:20Speaker 3: It's the it's not moving.
- 12:21Speaker 4: There's not much action unless you're just uh, you know,
- 12:24Speaker 4: the lab strain probably hampered me a little bit, but
- 12:28Speaker 4: then there's little caveats with with the the qualifying offer.
- 12:33Speaker 4: You know, if a team signed you, they lose draft picks,
- 12:36Speaker 4: so that turns a lot of teams off and you
- 12:39Speaker 4: kind of see what you know, Zach Gallan ended up
- 12:41Speaker 4: signing and going back to Arizona, Michael Keane going back
- 12:44Speaker 4: to the Padres. So they a couple of guys ended up,
- 12:47Speaker 4: you know that didn't take it signing back with the
- 12:50Speaker 4: same team you know they were on. So just a
- 12:54Speaker 4: strange year in terms of that. I don't know if
- 12:56Speaker 4: it was a record for guys accepting the qualifying offer,
- 12:58Speaker 4: but uh, I looked at it in terms of once
- 13:02Speaker 4: I kind of knew what was going on, There's there's
- 13:06Speaker 4: no place in the big leagues I would rather spend
- 13:09Speaker 4: to pitch one year and go prove myself again than
- 13:14Speaker 4: in Milwaukee. I mean, it's it's the place I've known,
- 13:16Speaker 4: it's a place I've grown up. It's all I know.
- 13:19Speaker 4: So when it came to that decision, that was pretty
- 13:24Speaker 4: pretty easy, and it was just too early in the
- 13:27Speaker 4: off season. You know, you had your you had your
- 13:30Speaker 4: guys who were the home run guys who were gonna,
- 13:32Speaker 4: you know, get the bigger contracts. But my situation was
- 13:36Speaker 4: a little different and you know, the Brewers showed confidence
- 13:40Speaker 4: in me, and you know, and I was. I was
- 13:44Speaker 4: very thankful for that. And there's no other place I
- 13:46Speaker 4: would rather pitch, you know, for a year than this uniform.
- 13:49Speaker 4: So it was an easy decision in that in that context, I.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Would agree as a Brewer fan. Yeah, you know, speaking
- 14:00Speaker 2: of numbers, man, I wanted to ask you something also
- 14:03Speaker 2: about uh, your pitching numbers. Obviously I didn't. I wasn't,
- 14:09Speaker 2: you know, too big into all the metrics. I didn't
- 14:12Speaker 2: understand as much you know it was it was pulled
- 14:14Speaker 2: out right. Yeah, let me grip it, let me tell
- 14:17Speaker 2: it as hard as I can. You know, I know
- 14:19Speaker 2: Kurt's real big into the numbers. So what I wanted
- 14:21Speaker 2: to ask you, Obviously, you know you are with a
- 14:25Speaker 2: pitching coach who is huge into those numbers too. You've
- 14:28Speaker 2: had Hookie in Double A in sixteen and now you
- 14:32Speaker 2: got Hookie again. You've gone through a lot of different
- 14:36Speaker 2: pitching coaches. So and obviously I know you you know
- 14:39Speaker 2: your your pitching style has changed a lot as well,
- 14:43Speaker 2: you know, with different pitches in your arsenal, So you know,
- 14:47Speaker 2: how much are you looking at your metrics? I guess
- 14:52Speaker 2: in between starts, you know, before the season starts. How
- 14:56Speaker 2: big of a deal is it for you?
- 14:58Speaker 3: Man?
- 14:58Speaker 4: That's that has changed for me so much over my career.
- 15:02Speaker 4: I'll never forget the first day that they brought the
- 15:04Speaker 4: track man into the bullpen. That was back in twenty nineteen,
- 15:09Speaker 4: first full year starting in the big leagues, and they
- 15:13Speaker 4: bring the track man into the bullpen, and it kind
- 15:15Speaker 4: of just it was odd. And so then it became like,
- 15:19Speaker 4: we're trying to throw to some numbers here, We're trying
- 15:21Speaker 4: to get a certain tilt, We're trying to get a
- 15:22Speaker 4: certain this and that. And I really had a hard time,
- 15:28Speaker 4: you know, dealing with that because I would throw a
- 15:30Speaker 4: pitch that would have the right spin and tilt to it,
- 15:33Speaker 4: but it was over the batter's head. So you know,
- 15:37Speaker 4: it's like I just mad. Yeah, I understood who I
- 15:41Speaker 4: was and as a pitcher. So then it became from
- 15:45Speaker 4: that point forward and bullpens like I need to be
- 15:47Speaker 4: able to at the end of the day and need
- 15:49Speaker 4: to be able to throw to a good spot. He'd
- 15:51Speaker 4: be able to change speeds and out up, down, and
- 15:55Speaker 4: but when, like you said, in between starts, I will
- 15:59Speaker 4: I know who I am it's very objective, like here's
- 16:01Speaker 4: here's who you are as a picture, here's how your
- 16:03Speaker 4: stuff plays, here's how it comes out this and that.
- 16:06Speaker 3: So I do pay attention to that.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Then it became like, all right, how do I maximize
- 16:11Speaker 4: the four seam fastball?
- 16:12Speaker 3: How do I maximize the two seam fastball?
- 16:15Speaker 4: And that foundation was laid in twenty eighteen for me,
- 16:18Speaker 4: and that's how you know, that evolved for me. But
- 16:23Speaker 4: at the end of the day, I try to be
- 16:26Speaker 4: a pitcher.
- 16:26Speaker 3: I try to pitch like I've I've got like I'm
- 16:32Speaker 3: throwing eighty eight and I've got to get.
- 16:33Speaker 4: Big leaguers out. And that's how I tried to approach it.
- 16:39Speaker 4: But knowing who I was as a pitcher and the
- 16:42Speaker 4: objective measurements of you know, my pitches, and I just
- 16:45Speaker 4: try to maximize them, and then once you get in
- 16:48Speaker 4: the game, all that goes out the window. Then it
- 16:50Speaker 4: just becomes I really try to pride myself on having
- 16:55Speaker 4: a good feel for the game and good feel for
- 16:56Speaker 4: what the hitters are trying to do, reading swings, and
- 17:01Speaker 4: I get this all the time, and Kurt, you guys
- 17:03Speaker 4: asked this all the time, why do you throw a
- 17:05Speaker 4: certain pitch more in one game than you do another game.
- 17:08Speaker 4: It's pretty simple. I throw what the hitter's telling me
- 17:11Speaker 4: to throw, and there's no rhyme or reason. And you know,
- 17:14Speaker 4: at the end of the day, I know what I'm
- 17:15Speaker 4: good at. But if there's a pitch that the guys
- 17:17Speaker 4: are not handling, I'm want to go to it more.
- 17:20Speaker 4: And so that's all evolved. And then you know, have
- 17:23Speaker 4: after coming back from the surgery. You know, metrically, stuff
- 17:28Speaker 4: has been a little different, a little different arm swing. Obviously,
- 17:32Speaker 4: velosity was down a little bit. So I had to
- 17:34Speaker 4: figure out ways to get these guys out and how
- 17:39Speaker 4: my stuff was gonna play.
- 17:40Speaker 3: And truth truthfully, I didn't figure any of that.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Out until I was going through rehab and I was
- 17:45Speaker 4: getting in these rehab starts and and then I you know,
- 17:48Speaker 4: I showed up in Miami on that first start back
- 17:51Speaker 4: and we get in the in the you know, pregame
- 17:55Speaker 4: scouting report meeting, and I straight up just told everybody.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I was like, look, I don't know how this is
- 18:00Speaker 3: gonna go.
- 18:01Speaker 4: I said, I'm gonna I'm gonna go give it my best,
- 18:03Speaker 4: But I was like, we'll figure it out on the fly,
- 18:06Speaker 4: and Thank goodness, I was able to kind of throw
- 18:09Speaker 4: the ball where I wanted to that day and it
- 18:11Speaker 4: worked out. So it's just we've got all these numbers, man,
- 18:15Speaker 4: and you can really use them to your advantage.
- 18:19Speaker 3: And and and.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Hooky knows when and how to present that to me
- 18:25Speaker 4: because he knows I'm not. Uh, I don't lean on
- 18:27Speaker 4: the numbers to tell me all the time. But if
- 18:31Speaker 4: there's some stuff that's glaring going on, he will bring up, like, hey,
- 18:35Speaker 4: you know, we need to pay attention to this or
- 18:38Speaker 4: and it may be something as simple as just I'm
- 18:40Speaker 4: getting too far over on the rubber and my release
- 18:42Speaker 4: side is getting a little, you know, out of hand
- 18:44Speaker 4: or whatever. It is, so kind of simple stuff we
- 18:47Speaker 4: and and that's kind of how our relationship has evolved.
- 18:50Speaker 4: And I mean he took me from Double eight this slow,
- 18:56Speaker 4: methodical delivery to speed me up and be able to
- 19:00Speaker 4: use my fourth seamer up top, and it kind of
- 19:05Speaker 4: learning that process. And then he was the pitching coordinator
- 19:09Speaker 4: after that. So I dealt with him a lot in
- 19:11Speaker 4: Triple A before I got caught up, and then obviously
- 19:13Speaker 4: in nineteen I've been with him since then, so he's
- 19:16Speaker 4: seen me throw about every pitch I've thrown in professional
- 19:19Speaker 4: baseball almost so we used the eye test a lot
- 19:22Speaker 4: and that has a lot to do with it. So
- 19:26Speaker 4: but yeah, numbers are a huge part of the game.
- 19:30Speaker 3: I do like him.
- 19:31Speaker 4: I don't dismiss him at all, but it's not the
- 19:34Speaker 4: end all be all for me as a pitcher.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Did the numbers tell you the sweeper was good before
- 19:39Speaker 1: you started throwing the sweeper?
- 19:40Speaker 4: Well, I gave up a homer on a sweeper and
- 19:42Speaker 4: I didn't throw it for about a month.
- 19:43Speaker 6: So then the eye test said, I heard that it
- 19:47Speaker 6: got me a strikeout.
- 19:49Speaker 4: But then after that I hung a few and they
- 19:52Speaker 4: got deposited and I quit.
- 19:53Speaker 3: I quit throwing them.
- 19:54Speaker 1: So what do he Who would you say is the
- 19:58Speaker 1: most metrically inclined, Who's the numbers guy on the pitching staff?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Man?
- 20:04Speaker 4: I would say quinn Is is pretty in tune with
- 20:07Speaker 4: the numbers.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I would say he's a good one. Mis Is is.
- 20:16Speaker 4: If mis would just listen to me, I'm like, buddy,
- 20:19Speaker 4: you've got one hundred and two, buddy, just go get them.
- 20:21Speaker 3: You know. And uh.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Is coming along, man, He's he's been looking good. So
- 20:29Speaker 4: we're expecting some big things from him. But I would say,
- 20:32Speaker 4: I would say Quinn is pretty in tune with with
- 20:36Speaker 4: all the metrics, and you know, it's kind of crazy
- 20:38Speaker 4: you look at it. It's like I think I'm the
- 20:41Speaker 4: only guy on on the on the starting staff that well,
- 20:47Speaker 4: I'm the only guy I think you may have a
- 20:51Speaker 4: year of service time and everybody else is under that
- 20:54Speaker 4: and so but they've all grown up with the numbers.
- 20:59Speaker 4: You know, I came up in a time when the
- 21:02Speaker 4: numbers were just becoming a thing. In my first two
- 21:04Speaker 4: years in the big league there was you know, like
- 21:06Speaker 4: I said, the track man was then utilized in the
- 21:09Speaker 4: bullpen in nineteen So like I kind of saw both
- 21:13Speaker 4: sides of that. But you know, I'm not a guy
- 21:17Speaker 4: who you say, hey, if you throw the ball here
- 21:21Speaker 4: with this certain velocity and certain you know, spin and
- 21:25Speaker 4: metrics to your pitch, here's the probability of you know
- 21:29Speaker 4: what's gonna happen.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Well, what if that one.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Time is you give up a homer, give up a
- 21:34Speaker 4: big hit that scores a couple of runs and it
- 21:36Speaker 4: loses you the game when you could have went to
- 21:38Speaker 4: a different spot or just executed a little bit better.
- 21:42Speaker 4: So it's it's a ball for me and I, you know,
- 21:44Speaker 4: and it's it's it's fun to look into it, but
- 21:47Speaker 4: I don't like go dive into it immediately after a
- 21:50Speaker 4: game or anything like that.
- 21:53Speaker 5: We're going to get into all of the nitty gritty

- 23:00Speaker 2: of a lot of young wu and miss also. Man,
- 23:03Speaker 2: that guy just wants to get down the mound, get
- 23:07Speaker 2: that ball over the plate.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Man.
- 23:08Speaker 2: If he's.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's good stuff, it's special. Man.
- 23:16Speaker 2: They all kind of reach up.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Oh sorry, go ahead, Kirk, No, go ahead, Corey, you
- 23:19Speaker 1: got a question.
- 23:20Speaker 2: They all kind of I mean, obviously, like you said,
- 23:23Speaker 2: there's a lot of young guys, not just in rotation
- 23:25Speaker 2: but in the clubhouse as well. Man, I mean, you
- 23:28Speaker 2: know it's you and Yelly right looking at all the
- 23:32Speaker 2: guys that kind of started with the Freddie praulta Woody
- 23:38Speaker 2: Corbyn Burns hater, Yelly you know that whole little error
- 23:43Speaker 2: right there, and Bret Phillips and now look you're you
- 23:46Speaker 2: and Yelly are the only ones there now, Man, you
- 23:49Speaker 2: know have you been Obviously you've kind of taken it
- 23:52Speaker 2: by the by the chains and kind of ran with that.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Look you're you're the guy that people are coming and
- 23:58Speaker 2: asking questions. Man, that that's the vault for me too.
- 24:01Speaker 4: That's been that's been different for me, you know, this year,
- 24:04Speaker 4: coming in the spring as well, because last year it
- 24:06Speaker 4: was my only focus was I was just trying to
- 24:10Speaker 4: get back on the field.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and uh, you know a lot of my.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Attention was you know, on myself and how I could
- 24:17Speaker 4: get on the field. And you know, I wasn't in
- 24:21Speaker 4: I was rehabbing in Milwaukee, but I was I was
- 24:23Speaker 4: rehabbing on the you know, on the road a lot.
- 24:25Speaker 4: So I'm bouncing back and forth and and you know,
- 24:29Speaker 4: this year after trading Freddie, and I'm kind of you know,
- 24:32Speaker 4: the last one standing. And it's it's been it's been
- 24:36Speaker 4: a fun process for me, to be honest, and I've
- 24:40Speaker 4: never been a huge vocal guy, but I try to
- 24:42Speaker 4: lead by example and and try to be the best
- 24:46Speaker 4: and most consistent, you know guy in terms of preparation
- 24:50Speaker 4: and and just you know, doing the things daily to
- 24:52Speaker 4: get my body ready to go, you know, play catch
- 24:55Speaker 4: or whatever it is, and try to and try to
- 24:57Speaker 4: set those standards in that way. But it's been fun
- 25:02Speaker 4: to talk to these guys and help them and because
- 25:06Speaker 4: I've gone through the experiences now that you know Quinn
- 25:09Speaker 4: and Chad. You know Chad and MIAs went through coming
- 25:13Speaker 4: out of the bullpen in the playoffs, pitching in big moments,
- 25:15Speaker 4: pitching in big.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Spots and doing well.
- 25:19Speaker 4: And drawing from those experiences, just like you know at eighteen,
- 25:22Speaker 4: that was that was that basically springboarded me into into.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Where I'm at now and the pitcher that I am.
- 25:29Speaker 4: And so I try to just I try to I
- 25:33Speaker 4: try to not talk about when I come back to
- 25:36Speaker 4: the metrics, I try not to talk about any of
- 25:38Speaker 4: that stuff.
- 25:39Speaker 3: I try to just talk about more of the.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Mental side of the game with these guys and how
- 25:44Speaker 4: to you know, go about pre pitch routine or whatever
- 25:49Speaker 4: it is, or type of situations that you get into
- 25:51Speaker 4: in the field, because the more and more you pitch,
- 25:55Speaker 4: the more the situations you get yourself into, and and
- 25:58Speaker 4: just trying to help in that way. So that way,
- 26:01Speaker 4: if they you know, something comes up, they that that
- 26:05Speaker 4: voice in the back of their head pops up and
- 26:07Speaker 4: it's like, Okay, maybe I can go this route to
- 26:09Speaker 4: get out of this inning or this jam or whatever
- 26:12Speaker 4: it is, And uh, that's the fun part for me.
- 26:14Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 26:15Speaker 3: And so when you can see that and help and and.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Just let them know I'm not I'm not the old Uh,
- 26:21Speaker 4: I'm not the salty vet like you know, I'm not
- 26:23Speaker 4: a I love to help in that sense, and you know,
- 26:29Speaker 4: and that's that's been a cool transition for me, coming
- 26:32Speaker 4: into the spring and just trying to leading that way
- 26:35Speaker 4: and just helping any way I can.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I got a question for you about hitting. What would
- 26:40Speaker 1: you hit in today's game? What would your average be?
- 26:45Speaker 4: Dude, I'll never forget getting the face Noah Cindergard in
- 26:51Speaker 4: New York one night and you know they call him
- 26:55Speaker 4: Thor and his walkout song is the you know, Thor's
- 26:59Speaker 4: theme song, and dude, I was like, holy crap. And
- 27:04Speaker 4: then I tried to like had the bun off that
- 27:07Speaker 4: and it was one hundred sinking.
- 27:10Speaker 3: And then I tried to, you know, do.
- 27:13Speaker 4: The slash bunt and I tried to pull this thing
- 27:16Speaker 4: back and get started early and I was super late.
- 27:20Speaker 3: And it's just it's not fun. It's that part of
- 27:23Speaker 3: it was not fun. Uh.
- 27:25Speaker 4: It's cool to see, but man, I have no idea,
- 27:29Speaker 4: Like that's probably not even a fair question to ask,
- 27:32Speaker 4: but uh, dude, hitting is so hard and uh, I
- 27:38Speaker 4: don't even I wouldn't even have a number for you, man,
- 27:40Speaker 4: I really wouldn't.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I mean, what do you well, well, what do you go?
- 27:47Speaker 1: Do you know what your average your career average is,
- 27:49Speaker 1: off top of your noggin.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Uh, it's got to be over two hundred. You got
- 27:55Speaker 4: it in front of you.
- 27:56Speaker 3: I'll look it up here, Yeah, look it up. We'll see.
- 27:59Speaker 4: I know I hit like two sixty something one year,
- 28:02Speaker 4: I think, but really.
- 28:06Speaker 3: I really struggled one homer in the regular season.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Let's see, let's see, we're scrolling. There's so much pitching
- 28:14Speaker 1: postseason pitching. All right, drum roll, please, you hit one ninety.
- 28:17Speaker 3: One over four years.
- 28:19Speaker 1: But get this, get this, hey, how about this?
- 28:22Speaker 2: How about this?
- 28:22Speaker 1: They have your your hitting war point seven. Hey, oh okay,
- 28:28Speaker 1: because you're you're you're getting compared to pitchers.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I guess right, right, Hey, I had a bad year.
- 28:34Speaker 3: This was twenty one, I think. And Murphy, yeah, Murph
- 28:39Speaker 3: wore me out that year.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And I mean, dude, like they start spinning first pitch
- 28:45Speaker 4: breaking balls and it's like, all right, I'm trying to
- 28:47Speaker 4: like just give me the first pitch heater, dude, like
- 28:50Speaker 4: you know, and that's that kind of all went out
- 28:52Speaker 4: the window, and uh.
- 28:54Speaker 2: That's your own doing.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Man.
- 28:55Speaker 1: You hit sixty seven nineteen.
- 28:58Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.
- 28:59Speaker 4: And then we get to twenty and I didn't get
- 29:01Speaker 4: the hit, and then it was all down hill from it,
- 29:03Speaker 4: and I took a year off from hitting this craps
- 29:05Speaker 4: hard man.
- 29:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah I would. I wouldn't do too well in
- 29:11Speaker 3: today's game, that's for sure.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Who would be the best hitting pitcher on the staff?
- 29:17Speaker 3: Come on, man?
- 29:18Speaker 2: Yeah, not even question.
- 29:22Speaker 1: For two way guys on there too. He had some
- 29:25Speaker 1: two way guys. Uh, yoho is a two way guy? Well?
- 29:29Speaker 1: Was Logan a two A guy in college?
- 29:31Speaker 2: Is high school?
- 29:33Speaker 3: I don't know if he was in college or not.
- 29:35Speaker 1: He was in high school.
- 29:36Speaker 4: That was the shortstop though, Yoho. Yeah, Well I haven't
- 29:41Speaker 4: seen him swing a bat. So for as long as
- 29:48Speaker 4: I'm with the Brewers, I'm holding that title.
- 29:50Speaker 3: I'm holding it and I'm not giving it up. I
- 29:54Speaker 3: promise no. Man.
- 29:56Speaker 4: I say all that, they would probably right, and I would.
- 30:01Speaker 4: I would just let me go, pitch man.
- 30:03Speaker 3: That's it.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Well, we'll never know.
- 30:05Speaker 3: We'll never know, never know.
- 30:07Speaker 1: You guys go out and show Hey, we will never know.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Yeah, we're excited to watch you pitch this year. I
- 30:13Speaker 2: hope you stay healthy. Thank you have a great year.
- 30:17Speaker 2: I did. Let's see, I had one more question more.
- 30:20Speaker 2: I just want to ask you. Yeah, I got it
- 30:24Speaker 2: right here. Let's see. Okay, what's your favorite stadium? Okay,
- 30:29Speaker 2: and try and think back to all your brewers memories
- 30:33Speaker 2: that you had. I know you've got a lot, man,
- 30:35Speaker 2: what is your so far? What's your favorite breweris memory?
- 30:39Speaker 3: Okay? Favorite favorite stadium roads?
- 30:45Speaker 2: Yeah, besides that park, Yeah yeah, American Family Field. Sorry, yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 2: you're good after Corey, Yeah, get it right.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I would say.
- 30:58Speaker 4: I try to factor in a lot of things. Obviously,
- 31:00Speaker 4: the West Coast is pretty sick. San Diego is a
- 31:06Speaker 4: good time. They're packed out every time, you know, the
- 31:10Speaker 4: last few years. Beautiful weather, perfect weather, perfect weather. Actually,
- 31:17Speaker 4: I'm going to say I really enjoy going to Atlanta.
- 31:21Speaker 4: It's kind of close to home. Boston was a treat.
- 31:26Speaker 4: When we went twenty two and I got to pitch there,
- 31:28Speaker 4: I thought, I mean, just I know, we played Wrigley
- 31:31Speaker 4: a lot, but Planet.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Fenway was it was pretty cool, man.
- 31:37Speaker 4: I know I've said like three stadiums.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Favorite one. I try to think about, like where I
- 31:46Speaker 3: pitched a good at.
- 31:46Speaker 1: And Okay, so there's there's there's something to this that
- 31:50Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know if how much you've
- 31:53Speaker 1: talked about this, like publicly. I've never written about it,
- 31:55Speaker 1: but I know we've had conversations about like the mountains
- 31:59Speaker 1: and site lines, and there's certain stadiums where you just
- 32:04Speaker 1: like pitching there because you my favorite.
- 32:06Speaker 3: My favorite at home, that's my favorite.
- 32:09Speaker 4: I mean that's yeah. And I don't know what the
- 32:12Speaker 4: numbers say, but I love the visual. I love actually,
- 32:16Speaker 4: I really like pitching it Wrily a lot. I feel
- 32:19Speaker 4: like it. It feels like you're on top of the head,
- 32:21Speaker 4: top of it. That's a that's a good feeling. I
- 32:26Speaker 4: really enjoy pitching in Washington. Strange enough, I like don't.
- 32:30Speaker 4: For whatever reason, I like pitching there. Saint Louis changed
- 32:35Speaker 4: their dirt on their mound a few years ago and
- 32:38Speaker 4: it's it's pretty good. And that is a big player
- 32:43Speaker 4: into into liking a place.
- 32:47Speaker 3: And you know, so.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Not a fan of Miami, not a fan of Miami. Tampa.
- 32:57Speaker 4: I like Tampa, like the fan of Tampa. But yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 4: a mound has the visual has a big, big part
- 33:05Speaker 4: of it.
- 33:05Speaker 2: For sure.
- 33:08Speaker 6: You forget the second part of this question too. Oh yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 6: second chart is a favor memory. I know a lot
- 33:12Speaker 6: of people are wanting me to say the homer, but
- 33:17Speaker 6: I'm gonna go with.
- 33:20Speaker 4: In twenty three in September, throwing a complete game shutout.
- 33:23Speaker 3: That was.
- 33:24Speaker 4: That was I'd only had, you know, probably one or
- 33:27Speaker 4: two other opportunities, true opportunities. One back in in nineteen
- 33:31Speaker 4: and you know, Counts wouldn't let me take that one.
- 33:36Speaker 3: It was against Philadelphia in a day game, and I
- 33:38Speaker 3: really wanted it.
- 33:40Speaker 4: And then I had that opportunity in twenty three and
- 33:42Speaker 4: I basically just told him, you're not taking me out
- 33:47Speaker 4: because I don't know how you It's so hard to
- 33:49Speaker 4: do now. It's like you don't you don't get those
- 33:51Speaker 4: chances every day.
- 33:51Speaker 3: And so.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Quick story about that he told me I had, you know,
- 33:56Speaker 4: I think it was at ninety two pitches coming into
- 33:58Speaker 4: the ninth inning and he's like, all right, i'll let
- 34:00Speaker 4: you go out, but you can't one O.
- 34:02Speaker 3: File's max like that's it.
- 34:05Speaker 4: And sure enough I get two outs and then our
- 34:08Speaker 4: first off I couldn't.
- 34:09Speaker 3: I was so nervous.
- 34:10Speaker 4: And it's on like a Monday night, and I think
- 34:14Speaker 4: that was the game after we was we had a
- 34:16Speaker 4: no hitter in New York, Corbin and and the rest
- 34:20Speaker 4: of the guys had a had a no hitter through
- 34:22Speaker 4: like what was it ten innings maybe something in New York.
- 34:26Speaker 4: We end up losing that game. So the next night
- 34:29Speaker 4: we're playing Miami. There's nobody there, and it just it
- 34:34Speaker 4: was kind of just things were happening, you know, double
- 34:36Speaker 4: plays this and that, quick.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Innings and and I get to.
- 34:40Speaker 4: The ninth and I'm like, dude, I'm like shaking, like
- 34:43Speaker 4: I'm nervous and don't even know that. Don't even have
- 34:46Speaker 4: a clue why, you know, I just I guess I
- 34:48Speaker 4: thought my mind of like never throwing a complete game,
- 34:51Speaker 4: shout out and trying to preserve that. And so I
- 34:53Speaker 4: get out there throw my warm up pitchers, and I'm like,
- 34:55Speaker 4: dangn I gotta i gotta take a breath here, man.
- 34:58Speaker 4: And I couldn't find the strike on early, and then
- 35:00Speaker 4: I got a couple outs, there were some runners on
- 35:02Speaker 4: and and sure enough I get to I believe it
- 35:06Speaker 4: was one hundred and four pitches and.
- 35:10Speaker 3: There was two outs. The hitter was coming up. I
- 35:13Speaker 3: see William.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Coming out, and I thought, man, he's about to take
- 35:16Speaker 4: me out right here, you know, with one hundred and
- 35:18Speaker 4: four pitches, and I didn't see see Counts coming out,
- 35:22Speaker 4: and so then uh, William comes out and he's like,
- 35:24Speaker 4: what do you want to throw? Of course, I'm like,
- 35:26Speaker 4: first pitch, heater, you know, standard, and then uh and
- 35:31Speaker 4: sure enough the first pitch popped it up and got
- 35:34Speaker 4: out of it, and so into that thing on like
- 35:36Speaker 4: one hundred and five pitches.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Pretty cools.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Who's easier to talk into staying in the game.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Murph recounts, Well, I never really had the opportunity last
- 35:45Speaker 4: year with Murph.
- 35:46Speaker 2: You know that's true.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's true. You haven't done it with Murph.
- 35:50Speaker 4: I think Murph's a little bit easier to persuade. There's
- 35:54Speaker 4: been there's been some times where you know, Counts was
- 35:57Speaker 4: thrown out in Atlanta and I was throwing today game there.
- 36:00Speaker 4: This was in nineteen and h Murphy took over and
- 36:06Speaker 4: this dude was just let me roll.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Man. I think I got through eight innings that day.
- 36:10Speaker 4: He kept just leaving me out there, and so he
- 36:13Speaker 4: might be a little bit easier.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he knows, man, just just a ballplayers coach. Huh,
- 36:21Speaker 1: that's it. You got it, man, all right? Well, Woodie,
- 36:25Speaker 1: thanks for your time. It's getting late here, it's getting
