  you just heard last week from their CEO Sam.

  Seems every year they go out and find the best high school coach

  boys and girls for each state. So they named, you know, 50, I
• 1:04
  DC as well. So 51 boys, state coaches of the
• 1:07
  year and 51 girls State, coaches of the Here.

  And then I don't know how they do it, because it's so many
• 1:13
  amazing coaches out there. They boil that down to one
• 1:17
  National High School, coach of the year and I am.

  So we're lucky, we're we've got the boys the 2022, right?

  So Tim here, our guests, the boys, a national coach of the

  year. He coaches up in Delaware at

  silesian. MM, High School, how'd I do you

  our tag name it go. We can't run that versus

  Louisiana and so we run on their house of sales.

  Well Tim man you know really thank you so much for being

  It's it's really a big honor to be named the national boys, high
• 3:01
  school coach of the year. I mean there are 12 to 15,000
• 3:06
  high school programs out there. This is no small task.
• 3:11
  We're going to get into what happened this.
• 3:13
  Here what you know what in the world, culminated?
• 3:16
  The the assistant coaches on your staff parents.
• 3:19
  Administrative support there has to be just this.
• 3:22
  I'm assuming I full disclosure Tim and I don't really talk
• 3:25
  about this before we hit record. I don't really know how the
• 3:27
  season came, just so we can hear it fresh me and you together.
• 3:31
  So we're going to find out just how everything kind of worked
• 3:34
  together and really kind of an amazing season to be named.
• 3:38
  The National High School, boys, coach of the year.
• 3:40
  But before we get there, Tim, let's kind of get in our way
• 3:43
  back machine. And let's learn more about you
• 3:46
  at some point assuming you were an athlete at some point
• 3:51
  coaching switched from something that's done to you.
• 3:55
  You know, coach barks out, go do this, go do that.
• 3:58
  And you say, yes, sir, yes, ma'am.
• 3:59
  And go do it to a head-to-head to switch in your head to an
• 4:02
  idea of like, oh wait a minute. Like I actually like I could do
• 4:05
  this. Like, I could, I could actually
• 4:06
  coach, like, I can write a leader where does coaching as an
• 4:10
  idea of a profession? Come into your life.
• 4:14
  Well, I don't know if I ever thought of it as a profession,
• 4:16
  but the first time I ever really gave any Credence to her thought
• 4:21
  about it was, I think like a lot of guys and a lot of young,
• 4:24
  boys, as their father, you know, your dad is one of your first
• 4:27
  coaches and for me as a youth football player, my dad coached
• 4:31
  me and youth football, my dad worked at for PSE&G, which is
• 4:36
  electric company. In Jersey, he was doing word out
• 4:39
  at work out on Cherry, Pickers, eventually moved his way up.
• 4:42
  He's working in the office one thing.
• 4:43
  Always stressed mirror with told me, rather not stressing me but
• 4:46
  he said, it's become had to forget.
• 4:48
  He wishes he went into teaching and coaching and I always
• 4:52
  remembered that and that from that point on when I was little
• 4:54
  as I won't be a teacher and a coach I didn't really think of
• 4:57
  coaching is like, like a job job.
• 4:58
  Was that something that you just do if you teach and that's how
• 5:01
  that was kind of my first foray into everything was my was
• 5:05
  definitely, my dad saying that me.
• 5:07
  And from there, that's I knew growing up is like, I want to be
• 5:10
  a teacher and a coach. And I did pivot for one minute
• 5:13
  there. I had it.
• 5:13
  A little at some point. It clicked in my head, I was
• 5:17
  like, well, you're not gonna make any money being a teacher,
• 5:18
  gave me to do something stupid. You need to do something
• 5:20
  different because that's going to be stupid if you just do.
• 5:23
  So I get to get to UD and initially wanted to declare
• 5:27
  environmental science because you know, that's that's going to
• 5:30
  pay the bills somehow that was. I don't know, it's different.
• 5:32
  I was like, alright, let's do environmental Side by took 12
• 5:35
  weeks in chem and I was like, this is it for me?
• 5:38
  I'm going back to doing social studies and special ed.
• 5:41
  So here we are. I think Kim One has killed many,
• 5:44
  many dreams. I was so far over my head and oh
• 5:48
  my gosh, you know, it's interesting right off the bat
• 5:51
  time. You talked about your dad's
• 5:54
  almost like advice or, you know lesson.
• 5:56
  He probably didn't even know, he was giving you a lesson.
• 5:59
  It was just his speaking, his truth and his reality when he
• 6:01
  talked about. Well, you know, I had one kind
• 6:03
  of regret, I wish I had to become a teacher.
• 6:06
  Regret is a powerful tool one that we can either use because
• 6:11
  we don't allow ourselves to have any regrets or if we do that
• 6:13
  Things that have regrets the to live like man.
• 6:15
  I wish I could have done some different so now what do I do
• 6:18
  today? Knowing that I mean that's
• 6:20
  really interesting that you know, your dad almost sacrificed
• 6:24
  to have that regret for you so you didn't have to go through
• 6:27
  that. Well bet that one small
• 6:29
  diversion to environmental science.
• 6:31
  Yeah I mean I'm not kidding. I'm not kidding that always I
• 6:35
  think there's a lot of kids like that.
• 6:36
  All they want to do is like they want to make their dad proud of
• 6:39
  them like in they want like that's like that's like he was
• 6:43
  like that's My hero like that's who I want to be proud of me and
• 6:47
  like I'm always thinking about him you know.
• 6:50
  And and everything I do it's like I you know I I got him in
• 6:54
  the back of my mind I'm always thinking about him and I'm not
• 6:57
  that's no insight to my mother as well.
• 6:59
  I love her so much. She's the best.
• 7:01
  You know, she's kept our family like in a great spot but just
• 7:06
  State and especially with coaching and teaching it just
• 7:08
  hits like really close with my dad.
• 7:10
  It's like very, very close and you talk about regret.
• 7:13
  I have Tons of regrets and I tell the kids all the time, like
• 7:16
  we tend to learn through regrets and we learned the hard way a
• 7:19
  lot in life, but that's how we actually learned, you just hope
• 7:22
  it's not so bad that, you know, you can recover for it.
• 7:24
  But I mean, I got a, I got a list, a mile long of regrets and
• 7:29
  things that, you know, I wish were different.
• 7:32
  So you mentioned UD, I'm assuming that's University of
• 7:34
  Delaware. Yes.
• 7:36
  So we're you an athlete there or just through high school or
• 7:39
  what? Yeah, so growing up in New York,
• 7:43
  I grew up right outside New York City, went to high school in
• 7:46
  North Jersey, Don Bosco prep, which is an all-boys Catholic,
• 7:50
  High School, very similar to sleazy Anna, that's a long time
• 7:53
  football program, right? Don't remember?
• 7:55
  I think that Don Bosco a lot. Yeah, okay, yeah, national
• 7:58
  champions in football, I played, you know, like football did
• 8:01
  track and field it down Bosco a lot of life lessons with are
• 8:05
  some of my best friends from there.
• 8:08
  And then coming out of Boss, Co had the opportunity to get in
• 8:13
  track and field scholarship from the University of Delaware.
• 8:17
  So came down to you D in the fall, that's when 10 I believe.
• 8:23
  Get to, UD recruitment. Jim Fisher was our head coach at
• 8:27
  the time and then somebody who I'm sure we'll talk about a
• 8:29
  bunch today is that Larry Pratt. I was one of the best Masters
• 8:33
  throwers in the country and he was throws coach UD.
• 8:37
  I think 453 Is wow, very very long career at UD.
• 8:42
  One of the best throws coaches in the country of nobody's ever
• 8:44
  heard of. And that's not even true because
• 8:47
  he's also a national record holder as a master's thrower
• 8:51
  Masters. Thrones, another thing we could
• 8:52
  get into a bunch of. He talked about that.
• 8:54
  So I guess you'd be in the fall, get my first season is we're in
• 8:59
  the middle of our first season of first indoor season and in
• 9:02
  the January of 2011 we get a call from or get an email saying
• 9:06
  that we have to meet down at the Bob Carpenter Center and Bernard
• 9:10
  Muir is our ad at the time. He's now the, a be at Stanford
• 9:13
  and we find out that our programs being cut that our
• 9:17
  programs being eliminated. So, hey, enjoy this upcoming
• 9:20
  outdoor season, because it's out there Seasons going to be your
• 9:23
  last season as a Varsity Sport here at Delaware.
• 9:27
  And then from that point, you know, everybody's angry,
• 9:30
  everybody's upset scrambling. Or we transferring, you know, we
• 9:33
  have schools looking at some of us already saying, you know, why
• 9:37
  don't you come here once you There.
• 9:39
  And we had the way with that. We had the way that those
• 9:41
  options at the time, but part of what was like, well, let me, let
• 9:47
  me. Hang on to the Delaware, another
• 9:48
  you, let's see how this goes is, was coach Pratt and Coach
• 9:52
  Marlene the two of them. Absolutely like, made it hard to
• 9:57
  want to leave because we were like their children and they
• 9:59
  were like our parents then also heard at the time, I began, you
• 10:03
  know, dating. My now wife Courtney, we've been
• 10:07
  we've been together over 11 years now and she was on the
• 10:12
  girls team. And yeah, I was really, I was
• 10:15
  really happy like that outdoor season went really well that
• 10:18
  Varsity season. I got the School freshman record
• 10:19
  in the shot. And and those two things sort of
• 10:25
  played and it was like, you know, we're going to keep our
• 10:26
  scholarships over not Varsity anymore.
• 10:28
  So we're going to we're going to try the club life.
• 10:30
  The girls are still Varsity. That was a, you know, that was
• 10:33
  the point of contention we're always busting the girls chops
• 10:36
  about is like, you know, I wish we still were able to go to Penn
• 10:39
  relays. I wish we were still able to go
• 10:41
  dicey for a raise. I wish we could qualify for
• 10:43
  regionals, you know? And they would be complaining
• 10:45
  about traveling or doing something that's like well we're
• 10:47
  traveling ourselves or coach Pratt's driving this in the van
• 10:50
  somewhere. Yeah, you don't know what you
• 10:53
  kind of have until it's gone. You know, we've had coaches,
• 10:57
  most recently, Jim Sprecher head coach of Lynchburg University
• 11:00
  who have been through programs being dropped in their
• 11:02
  professional as they were the coaches there.
• 11:04
  And it's just devastate, I mean, that's just, that's just
• 11:07
  nonsense as, you know, as you look back on it.
• 11:10
  Now what was it? Like, as an athlete like, you
• 11:14
  know, I think about I focus on coaches, right?
• 11:16
  So I hear about program being cut, my heart automatically goes
• 11:20
  to the coach and their family and although Work they've done
• 11:23
  and it's just poof it's just, it's gone as an athlete.
• 11:26
  You do have options and use chose a.
• 11:29
  I don't know if it's normal or not option, but you stayed which
• 11:31
  I love that because that means like UD was the right place for
• 11:35
  you, regardless of track specifically.
• 11:37
  So it just all boiled down to that all the things, you know,
• 11:41
  meeting Courtney having the coach, it could still be there
• 11:43
  and everything. That was the right place for
• 11:45
  you. What was it?
• 11:46
  Like, as an athlete and to now that you can look back and think
• 11:50
  about it, where there any signs? Is that you maybe didn't you
• 11:53
  couldn't pick up as an 18 19 year old kid but now as an adult
• 11:56
  you're like oh you know what? I didn't realize I did see this
• 11:59
  and maybe the writing was on the wall and I just couldn't read it
• 12:02
  up to your point. You know, he was 100% the right
• 12:05
  place for me at the right time and I've said it multiple times,
• 12:08
  I think you'd be gate was probably the best thing that
• 12:10
  ever happened to me between obviously meeting my wife, the
• 12:14
  experience I had there and meeting coach Pratt.
• 12:16
  Marlene, who were truly my other set of parents you know, I just
• 12:21
  I love them so much. And but the writing on the wall.
• 12:25
  Can you mentioned 22 years prior?
• 12:27
  It cut the indoor team. So we were only outdoor at the
• 12:31
  time we step in door, we were competing already as a club so
• 12:35
  they competed they eliminated the outdoor program.
• 12:37
  There was no true inkling know that we ever thought the program
• 12:40
  was going to be eliminated because they just offered you
• 12:43
  know they just recruited the whole freshman class and guys
• 12:45
  they divvied out scholarship money.
• 12:48
  So I wasn't sure why I mean and they cited it I believe.
• 12:52
  Administration at the time, cited it as Financial concerns
• 12:56
  and Title 9, citing, you know, equal opportunities for sports.
• 13:01
  So Men's Track and Field was dropped and women's golf was
• 13:04
  added, you know, so they took the roster of 40 guys out the
• 13:09
  window and they added women's golf with about 88 girls
• 13:12
  starting the women's golf team. So it was a nun, you know, an
• 13:16
  unfortunate part of it. Luckily the nature of track and
• 13:19
  you know, we can compete club, we could compete on attachment
• 13:22
  but there Was something very. I don't know what it whether the
• 13:25
  right word is either like emasculating, or there was
• 13:28
  something on Great Hollow about getting your varsity status like
• 13:31
  ripped away from you. I think we all like, all my
• 13:33
  throwing teammates and I would struggled with that losing that,
• 13:37
  that sense of being a varsity NCAA athletes.
• 13:41
  Like we were outside of the weight room.
• 13:43
  Thank God, you'd be let us still lift and the varsity weight room
• 13:47
  and use the strength coaches. I mean, we were kind of
• 13:49
  eliminated from a lot of the The other like day-to-day operations
• 13:56
  in the athletic department, I mean to this day, my wife still
• 13:58
  gets letters in the mail from the athletic department asking
• 14:01
  for donations and I don't get anything and I think it's
• 14:04
  important because they like you know we were wiped off the face
• 14:07
  of the Earth like I don't they don't look at this as a sport or
• 14:09
  maybe because they're like we hate we pop this program are not
• 14:11
  going to. I'm going to ask you for money
• 14:13
  but I do love you D. I do love you.
• 14:15
  Da gave me some of the best things ever in my life.
• 14:18
  That was a decision that was, you know, those were other
• 14:21
  people in the background making In those decisions, what's you?
• 14:24
  These are the Mud Hens or is that Delaware State?
• 14:26
  We are the Blue Hens, baby. Blue him, that's it.
• 14:29
  Yeah. Is that you're going to get so
• 14:39
  mad at me? Is that a chicken?
• 14:40
  Is that what that is? It's a fighting bird to fighting
• 14:44
  bird, okay? It's a fighting bird.
• 14:46
  I mean, I don't even know, like, I don't know.

  I know it's a fighting Bird. Okay blue hand and it's a
• 14:54
  female. That's so we need to get like a
• 14:57
  football game or a dual meet between you, the University of
• 15:00
  Delaware and Coastal Carolina, you know, they're the
• 15:03
  chanticleers and that's also I don't know if it's a chicken or
• 15:05
  something. It's a fighting bird is exactly
• 15:07
  what it is. Yeah, the only reason I know
• 15:09
  that is one there in our, my alma maters conference and to
• 15:12
  our one of our sales reps here are pole vault expert was a pole
• 15:15
  vaulter at Coastal Carolina and they play.
• 15:18
  My beloved Troy, Trojans and lately, they've been coming out.
• 15:22
  On top. So I got to hear about it from
• 15:23
  from this guy over here. So yeah, yeah.
• 15:26
  So did you take the time? Like you said you kept competing
• 15:31
  because he had these amazing coaches and Coach Pratt and
• 15:33
  Coach Pratt. Did you continue competing like
• 15:38
  as an unattached or as a club athlete or did any thought ever
• 15:42
  spend of like okay well maybe I should like start helping out
• 15:44
  the girls team is like a coat, like the did coaching start
• 15:46
  coming in? Like oh maybe I should just kind
• 15:48
  of start transitioning that way now.
• 15:51
  I mean, we went We just stayed right on competing and we
• 15:54
  competed as called athletes and is unattached athletes.
• 15:57
  The thought of that was, we were still practicing with the girls.
• 16:02
  We were still working with Coach crack coach Marlene, we were
• 16:05
  still in the Delaware Field House.
• 16:07
  You know, shot weight fall, lips, disc Hammer, the whole
• 16:12
  shebang and travel into meets, you know, right off the Jump and
• 16:17
  my. So, the year after this is where
• 16:20
  we kind of hit like the biggest like Adversity point that I kind
• 16:23
  of picked think back to the year after we were cut.
• 16:27
  So following freshman year we get to the fall competing.
• 16:30
  Everything's, I mean, not competing at preseason stuff,
• 16:33
  everything's going. Okay, we get to November about
• 16:37
  2011 and, you know, my, my father passed away at that point
• 16:42
  and this was a, he had been very sick for a while.
• 16:46
  And 2007 I was in high school, he had a another stroke that
• 16:49
  sort of rude messed up. His depth, perception is
• 16:51
  diabetes. We started getting a hold of
• 16:53
  them and he was really deteriorating both like,
• 16:55
  mentally and physically. I mean, he wasn't the same
• 16:58
  person. It's very sad to like, watch
• 17:00
  somebody go through that to like, you know it.
• 17:02
  I'm not like I'm privy to that. So he passed away.
• 17:07
  I don't forget. It was the night before.
• 17:09
  It was my going to be my 20th birthday, I'm out with Courtney.
• 17:13
  And I'm talking to my dad on the phone and I before I just hated
• 17:16
  all time, bench, press PR and I am not a strong guy on the
• 17:18
  thrower, but I like I'm not super strong at the time.
• 17:22
  I think. It was a PR.
• 17:22
  I think I hit 335, which he talks.
• 17:25
  Most throw is to be like, that's not that good.
• 17:26
  Intentions press for throwing don't tell my dad about this,
• 17:29
  were all excited. He's like, okay, look what you
• 17:31
  doing tonight? I'm gonna hang out, Courtney
• 17:33
  tomorrow's my birthday. We're going to do whatever you
• 17:35
  like. Okay, talking more, wake up the
• 17:37
  next morning, thank god kourtney's with me, and I get a
• 17:41
  call from my home phone. I sear on my on my phone, it
• 17:44
  says home. I'm like, oh God, it's probably
• 17:46
  my mom, my dad calling me and I forget is my mom called me on
• 17:49
  the phone and saying she's like, you know, honey, Had had another
• 17:53
  stroke last night like he passed away.
• 17:55
  It's the morning of my birthday and this is, you know, my father
• 17:58
  passed away and my birthday. It's something.
• 18:00
  I I'm always weird now like a little bit about my birthday in
• 18:04
  part because of that and, you know, from there, we believe we
• 18:08
  fast forward a month, we get to the indoor season, you know, I'm
• 18:11
  still practicing. But I mean, I could tell you
• 18:13
  might, like I had like the head wasn't in it, the heart wasn't
• 18:16
  in it way too much time, doing things that shouldn't been doing
• 18:20
  instead of training. I mean I had Dad.
• 18:22
  I had a pretty bad indoor and outdoor season, didn't even
• 18:25
  break Mighty Ours from freshman year after a great freshman
• 18:28
  season. And at that point, I mean, I
• 18:31
  just, I just kind of drifted through the outdoor season.
• 18:32
  It was just sort of a lost year. We get to the, the fall of 2012,
• 18:41
  and then something just clicked in my head.
• 18:44
  Like I said earlier, like you want your, you want your dad to
• 18:47
  be proud of you, and it's from that point on, it was like you
• 18:50
  look, you have, you know, you live.
• 18:52
  Two lives at that point. Like, you live your own life,
• 18:54
  you live the life, you know, for your dad and like you're like,
• 18:57
  that's why you bring the certainly attitude and energy to
• 19:00
  what you do because it's not just about you anymore.
• 19:03
  And, and whether that's my own, like, mental or personal
• 19:05
  psychological things to work through, you know, with, with a
• 19:08
  therapist or something. I always took that on as, like,
• 19:12
  like, you live to wives and like, I had to do it in my head,
• 19:15
  it kept me going. I was like, you have to do it
• 19:17
  read that I was like and at that means like, you know, I wanted
• 19:21
  that you d. School record even as a club guy
• 19:23
  was like, I'm getting that you D School record and get my name up
• 19:26
  on that sign. All right.
• 19:27
  And in some way, like, that will magically fix everything and
• 19:30
  like, you know, the battle. I know my dad wasn't coming
• 19:33
  back, but he'd be proud and I hope he is.
• 19:36
  Regardless, my mom and people tell me all the time that he is,
• 19:39
  and he should be, but it's just, it's something I think about it.
• 19:42
  I have to work through that myself.
• 19:44
  So that's what got me going again.
• 19:46
  Was was really just that year, A bad year thinking of my dad and
• 19:49
  was like, all right, now we're taking off Junior.
• 19:52
  Season one. Great went to Club Nationals.
• 19:54
  Took a shot put title big PRS out of Indiana University.
• 19:58
  Oh yeah. Very very nice facility.
• 20:00
  That's the only time I've been in Bloomington because we were
• 20:04
  cut from go to Regionals. I know they used to have
• 20:06
  regionals at Bloomington every once in a while and then we get
• 20:10
  senior year at UD. Really on the door that
• 20:14
  school-record minimum about like a foot off.
• 20:16
  And then, my senior year outdoor season just caught a shot real
• 20:20
  bad off the index finger. And my index finger was just
• 20:23
  fried, and I couldn't release it anymore.
• 20:26
  And I'm sitting there about to graduate and I'm like, crap I
• 20:29
  have, you know, I'm not going to get this like my season is over
• 20:32
  in mid-april and then that transition to a whole nother
• 20:37
  story but that was sort of the you D career that was the
• 20:39
  trajectory coach Pratt with me along the way, when I talk about
• 20:42
  my second dad and my second set of parents, those two got me
• 20:46
  through that time on question. So to my wife, so to coordinate

  I teach high school now and it was there where I learned?

  Like, I just have, I had it built up in my head like that it

  was going to be a challenge that I wasn't ready for.

  I see it in young teachers and like you can be genuinely

  intimidated. Fine 11 of 12 year old kid,

  hooked me up with that job. So we're applying for jobs.

  There's a little private school, not too far north Wilmington

  called st. Edmund's Academy and I

  interviewed at st. Edmund's Academy for Social

  Studies. Got the principal there.

  So, I'm interviewing for this job.

  It's me. And like one other candidate,

  she calls me up and she says, hey, we're going with this other

  that I've done before because of the nature of how its run in a

  But we don't realize that where we are today is because those

  teams passed you up or because those publishing people didn't

  That's a major college with 16,000 people and I don't hear

  people talk about you. The way people in this community

  I mean, if people who know Sally far and wide it is such a name,

  We recently the last like 10 years or so from In terms of

  fundraising donations sets Elysium to all boys Independent

  Schools, Catholic schools. Fairly, you know, there's some

  upper upper class folks. Here, there's a lot of

  middle-class, it was started as a really like a, like a middle

  working class. Private school for boys in this

  area. We received three of the 30

  largest donations, ever to a private high school in the whole

  country. And there's no other school that

  appears on that list more than once.

  We've had gifts of up to 16. Million 12 million, and 10

  million, all by different people for different purposes.

  be the head coach and I remember just looking at him and being

  like you're out of your mind but I didn't truthfully.

  I'm like, I never thought or had real aspirations be a head coach

  I can't remember it's 15 or 16 but I've been the head coach

  I think we won by, like, maybe 10.

  the time that was again, that was the first one where I was

  We had unfortunately one of our best hundred guys fall started

  in the hundred, our best hurdler who is a perfect example.

  People love a guy that we want, we asked them to do hurdles all

  outdoor season. He's a true hundred guy and we

  asked him to switch the hurdles. He didn't put up a fight about

  it like I mean I obviously had to coach him up a little bit and

  support him mentally but this kid this is Mari Mathis.

  He's running that marriage now he went out did the hurdles got

  so good. Worked his way up to the number

  two seed at States but he hit a hurdle in the prelims fell.

  So like and he was seated to get I think either 8 or 10 points

  So our hundred guy fall started. So we threw away kind of like 20

  So I got a really deep group of sprinters, this year, the last

  couple years, we have a really deep group historically of

  distance guys, but I can't enter like five or six guys in the

  states. I get a cap of three guys, and

  every event. So because of that, like my

  thought process is like, I want three guys in every event.

  And I want, you know, if you're good enough to qualify, you have

  a shot to get some Points and we've been the last couple of

  years, our deaths have been unreal.

  I mean we have entered three, launch, a three, triple jumpers

  We got three pole vaulter and the state of Delaware Bolton is

  not the strongest event. We're lucky.

  because she is a trailblazer woman.

  She is Just an absolute Workhorse and she almost is

  with their time in terms of Athletics and supporting us, I

  for I think, cesium has over like 170, state championships

  and in the state of Delaware and its Grant, Deinosuchus teller

  teller could be is a smaller state.

  But some of the performances on The National level and we have a

  nationally, ranked lacrosse program nationally right soccer

  program, our track and field programs not doing too shabby,

  they don't, I don't, I don't see too many national rankings out

  there for track and field programs, but, you know, we've
• 1:10:04
  been putting guys, Odds in Nationals on stop putting guys

  in college non-stop. So it's a testament to like it's

  part of like our culture. I think it's part of our

  foundation. Our DNA here at Sally's is that,

  you know, if I added two matters and it should be important to

  you, it should be something that matters.

  It's, it's just, it's never been been me.

  So, my wife shows me a lot of stuff and when I, when I News

  that people are asking is like oh so he did you have to apply

  for that and as I swear to God, I did not talk to anybody about

  Christina from UST, FFC, getting CCA and I just read it and I

  just read it back myself. I'm like no, I was like they got

  to be kidding me. It's like that.

  Because I can think of, I just think it's so many coaches that,

  you know, I know from back home in New York and New Jersey, he

  coaches everywhere and Like, and they chose me.

  I like, how the hell did they get to that conclusion?

  But I, but I loved it too. I mean, because it is, again, it

  feels validated, it feels of not just me, but I like of what we

  do, collectively of our guys, and our team, and our program.

  And yeah it's it's nice to be recognized.

  Do I think I'm do? I truly think I'm like a coach

  to the their kids. There's a thousand other people

  who can honestly be. 100%, I'll take it.

  because I don't think I'm going to get to the kids, never do

  behind-the-scenes stuff. That's not right out there on

  the track, even on the track every day.

  But there's that whole other world behind you and I think

  that would be maybe four if there's High School coaches in

  attendance, even more valuable to do something like that.

  Yeah. How about how to, what to expect

  when you become a head high school coach.

  So we have a ton of more assistant track coaches on The

  High School level than we do head coach.

  Is right. Yes some percentage I'm betting

  pretty big think that they want to be the head coach and don't
• 1:26:08
  really know what that entails so whether it's scheduling
• 1:26:12
  budgeting disciplinary. You know, other things in your
• 1:26:17
  athletic department that because your head coach, now you're
• 1:26:19
  expected to work football games or whatever.
• 1:26:20
  But we bla that would be very, that's more professional
• 1:26:24
  development style of of a topic of.

  Hey, you want to become a head coach?

  Well, let me tell you my experience I went from assistant
• 1:26:32
  to And here's all the things I had to learn.

  Maybe you can learn them now and be a mile ahead of me.

  You were when you become a head coach one day.

  Yeah I just have a passion. I know UST of CAS does an

  amazing job you know the technical speakers that are
• 1:26:45
  there. I mean it's the who's who is the

  Logan spoke, you know it's you learned so much.

  Jim Sprecher taught on multiple multi athlete long jumpers.

  Like, you know, long jump, triple jump into also has to be

  a high jumper, has to be a sprinter or hurdler things like

  that. Those are awesome.

  Extremely valuable for audience members to listen and take notes

  and become better on. But I just want more and more of

  the development of people who choose to be coaches, you know,
• 1:27:13
  how to hate the word work-life balance.

  But how do you work life? Balance has a head as a coach,
• 1:27:19
  whether it's on the college or High School level.

  How do you, how do you balance coaching in high school?
• 1:27:23
  While also being a teacher, teacher alone is a more than
• 1:27:27
  full-time job. Now, add a whole, another sport,
• 1:27:31
  a whole nother job, Up on top of it that to me is something that
• 1:27:35
  is not talked about. We like to over lift college
• 1:27:40
  coaches, in the sense of like, oh, they work 24/7 365 and they
• 1:27:43
  do. It's the worst sport in the
• 1:27:46
  world. And what I mean by that, is
• 1:27:47
  there is no day off, you know, Nationals is in June.
• 1:27:50
  If you have a kid, go to us. That's June and July July, 16.
• 1:27:53
  Recruiting the kids are back on campus in August, and cross
• 1:27:57
  country season, and offseason practice starts.
• 1:27:59
  There is no, there are no days off.
• 1:28:01
  There are none. For high school.
• 1:28:03
  There might be, I don't know having coached high school and
• 1:28:05
  20 both will man 25 year old. My God, I'm old long time but I
• 1:28:11
  wasn't a teacher. So I mean, add being a teacher
• 1:28:14
  and doing coaching track. That is also 365 24/7.
• 1:28:19
  And you're dealing with younger people, 14 to 18 instead of 18
• 1:28:23
  to 22 which can have its positive benefits.

  So yeah, I would love, you know, someone of your experience and

  where you are in your career as a coach and Here to talk about

  like whether it's something about the head coaching side of
• 1:28:35
  it or just you know philosophy of building a program because

  you've obviously done a great job there with your staff

  person to give a presentation on that because like, as it's a and

  atrocious and part of it's probably also coaching football

  because I then go right from football to indoor to outdoor

  the Summers really my time to kind of arrest that you know, we

  do Nationals and whatnot, but what I could say to somebody is

  like having amazing wife, you know, I'm so sorry that your

  spouse is 100% a NASA. Absolutely.

  You know, Kourtney is so supportive of this because she
• 1:29:19
  knows this is what I do. And this is what I like to do.

  And she, you know, she's spent many weekends sometimes without
• 1:29:29
  me around or night around without me around.

  Thank God for her that for multiple reasons, but thank God
• 1:29:38
  for in that sense that she is. Okay with me doing what I'm

  doing. Like, I'm very grateful that I
• 1:29:44
  have, you know, somebody like that in my life who supports

  this. When when I would be

  understandable if they didn't Courtney, I know you're

  coaches can't do it without our spouses.

  And that's whether you are male or female coach, and your spouse

  You mentioned, Courtney was on the team there at Delaware, was

  she aware as well, or was she different event coordinator and

  very funny. Courtney was a started out.

  She wasn't even going to do track really in college.

  Her dad is the was the superintendent of their school
• 1:30:23
  district, where she went to high school.

  He was a former principal and he had talked to the Tractor to

  extend the stuff to Delaware like see if, you know, see if
• 1:30:29
  something could happen. So she ended up doing She didn't
• 1:30:32
  have starting out in the fall where she was originally going
• 1:30:35
  to be Club so coach Pratt gets all of us out in the fall.

  He's it's where he teaches all the newbies had to throw Hammer.

  So he took us out back and we're throwing Hammer was Carl Shields
• 1:30:45
  who the guy who used to work with Yuri so Carl like knows
• 1:30:48
  what he's doing like. So we're out back throwing and I
• 1:30:52
  swear I swear to God like Courtney picked up the hammer in
• 1:30:55
  like two days like I and Coach Pratt coach Marlene to this day.

  Still say I never seen somebody picked the hammer of his
• 1:31:02
  Fastest, she did lo and behold, coach coach crack goes to the
• 1:31:05
  girls coach of the time. It says, we gotta get her on the
• 1:31:07
  roster, like she's going to score points so they get her up
• 1:31:12
  from Club on the varsity. She goes on to set the Freshman
• 1:31:15
  record that year in the hammer and she, you know, she scores
• 1:31:17
  its EAS that year. So Courtney was it was a hammer
• 1:31:21
  thrower and she, and she threw discus as well.
• 1:31:24
  She was not a hammer was her primary but she threw.
• 1:31:28
  She threw some discs as well. Well, I knew I liked her because
• 1:31:31
  the Hammers Best throw an event in my opinion.

  So any Hammer thrower I just have so much love for because
• 1:31:36
  it's a beautiful event. I love it.

  It is beautiful to watch to man you know one of the most
• 1:31:43
  valuable things you can give me is your time and I'm just so

  So people are just happy and excited and pumped for the

  season and it's really just an amazing amazing week.

  team, what you are doing? It's Irreplaceable.

  And it's immeasurable the positive impact, the role model

  that you and your staff are having with those kids there and

  much. Like your experience from high
• 1:34:42
  school with coaches and going through college those, these
• 1:34:46
  kids will remember you and the times that they're having for

  the rest of their lives. And they're going to go on to
• 1:34:53
  become bankers, and lawyers and business owners, and clerks, and
• 1:34:57
  moms, and dads. And they'll always come back to
• 1:35:01
  the lessons. But you taught them you and your
• 1:35:03
  staff taught them, man. So I'm just so so grateful.

  I love that UST. FCC a does this award because

  we're honoring people that are just simply doing the stuff man

  in a positive manner. And so, I'm so thankful for what
