Latest / North Side Territory: A Chicago Cubs Podcast / It’s not over yet, but Cubs look completely overmatched against Brewers
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory, presented by Fox One. I'm Sahade
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your Cubs
- 0:12Speaker 1: beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick. The Cubs are
- 0:16Speaker 1: on the brink of elimination. The Milwaukee Brewers have just
- 0:22Speaker 1: thoroughly embarrassed this team with their performance there. They did
- 0:26Speaker 1: everything that the Brewers do well in Game one, and
- 0:29Speaker 1: then they took what the Cubs do well in Game
- 0:32Speaker 1: two and flipped the script on them and started hitting
- 0:36Speaker 1: battles out of the park. Just you know, so far,
- 0:40Speaker 1: two games in, it's been a dismantling the Cubs have not.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Cubs have seemingly grabbed the momentum in each game and
- 0:48Speaker 1: then quickly lost it. Whatever night that was, Monday night
- 0:54Speaker 1: it was. That was one of those where you thought
- 0:57Speaker 1: the Cubs offense was gonna get going, and they just
- 1:01Speaker 1: three run homer, an impressive three run run homer by
- 1:05Speaker 1: Say Suzuki, and the Brewer's answer with their own three
- 1:07Speaker 1: run shot at another one later, and they just demoralized
- 1:12Speaker 1: that team and surely the fan base no doubt.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Walking into the visiting clubhouse at American Family Field around
- 1:21Speaker 2: eleven fifteen, pm ish Monday night, completely silent. I think
- 1:28Speaker 2: I heard a laundry cart kind of rolling through at
- 1:33Speaker 2: one point, but you could tell they were coming to
- 1:37Speaker 2: grips with the reality that they had just been absolutely
- 1:40Speaker 2: dismantled and that their season was teetering.
- 1:45Speaker 1: On the cliff.
- 1:46Speaker 2: And this, I think embarrassing is the right adjective. And
- 1:51Speaker 2: it's not just like one person. There's not just like
- 1:55Speaker 2: one sort of goat here who has to wear it.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But when you poach Craig Counsel from the Brewers, you
- 2:05Speaker 2: got to be thinking like, hey, this could be this
- 2:10Speaker 2: could be the blow that really uh knocks them off,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and they've gotten better uh without Counsel.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:21Speaker 2: The I think the payroll stuff goes both ways, right
- 2:26Speaker 2: of like you can point out, hey, you know, the
- 2:29Speaker 2: Cubs don't really seem to maximize their advantage, like they
- 2:32Speaker 2: give the Brewers sort of chances by not going all
- 2:36Speaker 2: out and say signing in Alex Bregman or or spending
- 2:40Speaker 2: like the top teams in the National League. And then
- 2:43Speaker 2: from the business side, they look at it like our
- 2:47Speaker 2: payroll is, you know, roughly eighty to one hundred million
- 2:51Speaker 2: dollars more than the Brewers every single year. Why are
- 2:54Speaker 2: they finishing you know, five to nine games better than
- 2:57Speaker 2: us over the last few years. I just totally running
- 3:02Speaker 2: the division and just you know, in every phase of
- 3:07Speaker 2: the game here, uh, Game one, it was defense. The
- 3:10Speaker 2: Cubs did not execute, and that's been their their calling
- 3:14Speaker 2: card offensively outside of uh those leadoff you know, first
- 3:21Speaker 2: inning home runs, it's been very quiet, almost no pressure
- 3:26Speaker 2: on the Brewers. And then just pitching wise, the Brewers
- 3:30Speaker 2: did it with a traditional ace and Freddie Peralta, and
- 3:33Speaker 2: then after then the Cubs led them off the hook
- 3:37Speaker 2: for using an opener. I don't know what uh, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: sort of collaborative decision that was. But the Brewers regrouped
- 3:46Speaker 2: and just were lining it up the miz there throwing
- 3:50Speaker 2: you know, one hundred hundred and one, three hundred and
- 3:53Speaker 2: four over and over again. Just in every which way,
- 3:59Speaker 2: the Brewers have dominant, and I think to the disappointment
- 4:03Speaker 2: has to be for fans here. I think we and
- 4:06Speaker 2: media rightfully pump this up of like, oh, this could
- 4:09Speaker 2: be like a classic, just a great matchup between two rivals.
- 4:14Speaker 2: They had the proximity, they have the animosity, and really,
- 4:18Speaker 2: these have been two games where we have to write
- 4:21Speaker 2: these takeaways with our buddy Andy McCullough that are due,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know, final out and everything's held up. And that's
- 4:31Speaker 2: normally almost it feels like every regular season game when
- 4:35Speaker 2: we go up there, it's back and forth. It's crazy,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know, as Justin Steele would say, the games are
- 4:40Speaker 2: drunk up there. This has not been. This has been
- 4:43Speaker 2: just the Brewers imposing their will over and over.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's you know, the power output. And Game two.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Don't know if that trend will continue. It doesn't matter
- 4:55Speaker 1: really because it showed up for a huge game for them,
- 4:58Speaker 1: a huge win for them. We'll talk more about the pitching.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I think that's obviously critical to this series. But the
- 5:07Speaker 1: Cubs offense has not showed up. You know, you know
- 5:11Speaker 1: how much I've been talking about. I believe they'll show
- 5:13Speaker 1: up this postseason. There are three games and three runs
- 5:18Speaker 1: in every game except for the one that they were
- 5:20Speaker 1: shut out in two for seventeen with runners in scoring position.
- 5:24Speaker 1: The only game that they had more than three at
- 5:27Speaker 1: bats with runners in scoring position was the Darvish game,
- 5:31Speaker 1: the Game three against the Padres. Otherwise it's two or
- 5:35Speaker 1: three at bats with runners in scoring position. Last night
- 5:38Speaker 1: it was one for two. That one obviously being says
- 5:41Speaker 1: three run homer. They're just Craig Council says it all
- 5:45Speaker 1: the time. He said it during the regular season. Put
- 5:48Speaker 1: pressure on the other team. Eventually you'll break through. It's
- 5:51Speaker 1: a good philosophy. You just keep putting men on base,
- 5:53Speaker 1: get runners in scoring position. You do that, you know
- 5:56Speaker 1: six out of nine innings, you're gonna win a lot
- 5:58Speaker 1: of games because you know that means you have a
- 6:00Speaker 1: good offense, and eventually you'll break through and have a
- 6:04Speaker 1: big inning. They had one big inning, and that's great.
- 6:07Speaker 1: They didn't They didn't do anything else after that. A
- 6:10Speaker 1: one batter uh, one one hit after the second inning,
- 6:14Speaker 1: no runners reaching second base after the second inning. Uh.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It just was, you know, a meager offensive performance yet again.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And it's you know, they they threw out their opener
- 6:29Speaker 1: and then they dominated with a bunch of relievers. It
- 6:33Speaker 1: comes to like you can go down the list. Ian
- 6:36Speaker 1: Happs had a really bad postseason. Jackson Curio hits this
- 6:42Speaker 1: three run homer, backbreaking the three run homer that that's
- 6:45Speaker 1: what put the game out of reach, really and and
- 6:50Speaker 1: he he was a question mark coming into the game
- 6:52Speaker 1: with a hamstring injury and he's out there doing his job,
- 6:56Speaker 1: looking great. And Kyle Tucker has a calf injury and
- 6:59Speaker 1: you know he's singling every you know, every other game.
- 7:03Speaker 1: No power to be found from you know, their superstar bat.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Pete's had a rough time. He kind of bounced back
- 7:12Speaker 1: in Game three and then in Game one of this
- 7:14Speaker 1: series with a couple hits, but no, look that they
- 7:18Speaker 1: need to hit for power. They're not doing it enough.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Solo home runs aren't going to get the job done,
- 7:23Speaker 1: not not more often than not. You know, you can
- 7:28Speaker 1: score runs. Sure, hit some solo home runs, but they
- 7:31Speaker 1: needed They just need to do more, and they haven't.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It's a it's it's been I guess it hasn't been shocking.
- 7:40Speaker 1: This Brewers team is really talented. And I kind of
- 7:42Speaker 1: said that it's like maybe that's just the bottom line.
- 7:45Speaker 1: This is a better team, uh, and like nobody should
- 7:48Speaker 1: be surprised by what the Brewers do. Sure, winning with
- 7:52Speaker 1: home runs is a little bit of a surprise, but
- 7:54Speaker 1: this is not like some scrappy underdog like they like
- 7:57Speaker 1: to present themselves. They are ninety seven win team, had
- 8:02Speaker 1: the best record in baseball. They are a very good team.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And right now, like you said, they're imposing their will
- 8:08Speaker 1: on the Cubs. They're showing the Cubs that, hey, we're
- 8:11Speaker 1: we're the better team. Uh, Patrick, let's uh, let's let's
- 8:16Speaker 1: take a quick break. We'll we'll hear from Fox one,
- 8:19Speaker 1: our new sponsor. All right, I will, I will read
- 8:28Speaker 1: this properly, but I'm not ready yet. Okay. All of

- 8:39Speaker 1: together in one place, including all a AL playoff games
- 8:43Speaker 1: in the World Series. We got two AL playoff games today,
- 8:48Speaker 1: Seattle versus Detroit. I mean, that's those aren't fun, you know,
- 8:51Speaker 1: the biggest cities and then most of the biggest markets.
- 8:54Speaker 1: But that's been a fun series. The Mariners are an
- 8:57Speaker 1: exciting team they have even that series is up, that's
- 9:01Speaker 1: probably the best series going right now as far as uh,
- 9:06Speaker 1: you know, competition wise. I mean the rest of them
- 9:09Speaker 1: are two oh right, uh. And in the other game tonight,
- 9:13Speaker 1: Toronto versus the Yankees. That you want to talk about
- 9:17Speaker 1: the Cubs getting blown up in the first two games.
- 9:21Speaker 1: It's kind of shocking how badly the Yankees have been beaten. Uh,
- 9:26Speaker 1: that's an offense that lives and died by the home
- 9:28Speaker 1: around the Yankees and the Toronto's just stumped them. Uh
- 9:33Speaker 1: just been really impressive. How good? Uh Toronto has looked that?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Did you see Patrick, the youngster Trey is Savage dominate
- 9:43Speaker 1: the other night? Multiple like what was it? Six and
- 9:46Speaker 1: a third? No hit for this kid? Uh? The Cubs
- 9:50Speaker 1: could shoot.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Sure you starting pitchers are allowed to throw more than
- 9:54Speaker 2: like two innings. Yeah, and I covered the Cubs. I
- 9:58Speaker 2: hadn't hadn't seen that.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So make sure to catch the Ale playoffs

- 10:30Speaker 1: pitching is it is not been there for the Cubs,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and look this team. I think it all starts with
- 10:40Speaker 1: Kate Horton. I think everything fell apart with Kate Horton
- 10:45Speaker 1: not not being healthy and Craig Council had to go
- 10:52Speaker 1: to his emergency plans starting Matthew Boyd on short rest
- 10:58Speaker 1: did not work. It looks like a bat decision, obviously,
- 11:01Speaker 1: with the result showed in Managa twelve home runs in
- 11:06Speaker 1: his final six starts, thirty one homers over the course
- 11:09Speaker 1: of the season. I believe I wrote that twenty five
- 11:14Speaker 1: of those were solo shots. And now you know, now
- 11:18Speaker 1: he gives up this three run homer in the first
- 11:21Speaker 1: like he started. It started at the last regular season start.
- 11:24Speaker 1: He gave up a three run homer, then a two
- 11:26Speaker 1: run homer to Manny Machado, now a three run homer
- 11:29Speaker 1: Andrew vaugh of all people, the pitching's not it's not fresh,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and and they just they don't have enough right now.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And it's showing up against the Breweries. They got through
- 11:42Speaker 1: that Padres game. They you know, pretty damn well in
- 11:46Speaker 1: that Padres series. It's not it's it's it's coming back
- 11:51Speaker 1: to bite them now. And like I think it all
- 11:53Speaker 1: starts with Horton, but also you need guys like Boyd
- 11:56Speaker 1: and showed it to step up, and they just haven't
- 12:00Speaker 1: showda like I didn't. I don't know if this is
- 12:03Speaker 1: what bit him, but his splitter, he barely went to it,
- 12:07Speaker 1: and when he did, he was just leaving it up
- 12:09Speaker 1: over the plate. He must not really trust it. And
- 12:12Speaker 1: and you know they were hitting his fastball. I think
- 12:15Speaker 1: what got hit out was the fastball and a sweeper. So,
- 12:19Speaker 1: you know, just a tough night for Showda in Monaga
- 12:22Speaker 1: and Cubs pitching plans are not working right now.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there is like no path back here,
- 12:31Speaker 2: Like there's no pitching plan per se that makes you
- 12:35Speaker 2: feel good. This isn't the zero four red Sox of
- 12:41Speaker 2: like a Pedro Martinez, Kurt Chilling. This is not the
- 12:45Speaker 2: twenty sixteen Cubs where they're down three to one. But
- 12:50Speaker 2: you know you've got some.
- 12:52Speaker 1: You know, the.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Amazing starting pitchers like those pitchers barely exist anymore in
- 12:59Speaker 2: the game him for forget the order of what was
- 13:02Speaker 2: it Lester Arietta Hendrix, Uh. And then you know you
- 13:06Speaker 2: piece it together with just ah other worldly performance from
- 13:12Speaker 2: a role as Chapman there to get it to back
- 13:16Speaker 2: to Cleveland and eventually a game seven. And you know,
- 13:23Speaker 2: I you made a great point you pointed out last
- 13:25Speaker 2: night we're sitting next to each other, uh Monday night
- 13:29Speaker 2: in the in the press box in Milwaukee of council
- 13:32Speaker 2: just going out there without even showed as interpreter of
- 13:36Speaker 2: just like buying time to get Palencia ready. Uh showed
- 13:42Speaker 2: a through his interpreter in the clubhouse, just said, I
- 13:46Speaker 2: ruined the game. There's frustration and it's kind of it's
- 13:51Speaker 2: tough to watch, Like just after seeing showed a pitch
- 13:55Speaker 2: with so much joy and conviction, UH, to see him
- 13:59Speaker 2: go through this rough stretch at the worst possible time
- 14:02Speaker 2: after almost two full seasons of very good to greatness.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Matthew Boyd similarly, like, You're just fantastic in the first
- 14:14Speaker 2: half and you know, really well regarded by his teammates,
- 14:19Speaker 2: but like that was your plan a after Horton's injury,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and like, as great as Horton was, he was sort
- 14:30Speaker 2: of baby all season and he's a rookie like you,
- 14:35Speaker 2: you have to be able to withstand stuff like that,
- 14:39Speaker 2: and you know, we'll get into it. I'm sure this
- 14:44Speaker 2: offseason will try and dig in more on those prices
- 14:46Speaker 2: at the trade deadline. I don't know if there was
- 14:51Speaker 2: a surefire starter out there, and maybe your best pictures
- 14:55Speaker 2: would have cost you Kate Horton and or Matt Shaw
- 14:59Speaker 2: and that was obviously see a non starter. But for
- 15:03Speaker 2: a team that has pieced it together so well since
- 15:05Speaker 2: justin Steele went down in April. The Cubs have left
- 15:08Speaker 2: them open for a lot of first and second guessing here.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yeah, they you know, they talk about pitching depth and
- 15:17Speaker 1: the importance. It's it's fascinating because the Dodgers were injured
- 15:24Speaker 1: for most of the year, banged up with their pitching staff,
- 15:28Speaker 1: and now all these guys are healthy at the right
- 15:30Speaker 1: time and kind of like locked in and doing it
- 15:34Speaker 1: and pitching well. The Cubs, you know, they lead on
- 15:38Speaker 1: these guys. Matthew Boyd, you know, he's great, and it
- 15:44Speaker 1: seems like he's kind of run out of gas. I
- 15:46Speaker 1: don't know, like it's it's you know, the results suggest
- 15:50Speaker 1: as much. You're right the way how good Imnaga was
- 15:55Speaker 1: and now it's just he has major home run troubles.
- 15:59Speaker 1: And we knew that that was going to be the case,
- 16:01Speaker 1: that there are going to be moments he just had
- 16:04Speaker 1: to limit them. A solo home run in the first
- 16:07Speaker 1: is so much different than that three run shots stucking
- 16:10Speaker 1: all the air out of the you know, the if
- 16:13Speaker 1: you want to if you believe in momentum, and I
- 16:15Speaker 1: believe in monum in a game, you know, it doesn't
- 16:18Speaker 1: carry over for the next game because it all depends
- 16:21Speaker 1: on you know, things can change so quickly. But it
- 16:24Speaker 1: felt like the Cubs were about to do something, and
- 16:26Speaker 1: I think I and hafn't even said as much. He thought,
- 16:29Speaker 1: you know, he thought this that that was the beginning
- 16:32Speaker 1: of Oh, here we go. Uh the offense, Uh needs
- 16:36Speaker 1: to you know, it's going to wake up here h
- 16:39Speaker 1: and say it kind of said, you know, for him personally,
- 16:43Speaker 1: it was one and done. He didn't do anything after
- 16:45Speaker 1: that game. After that home run, he said they need
- 16:48Speaker 1: to believe through his interpreter, he said they need to
- 16:51Speaker 1: have more tenacious at bats. Ah, he's not wrong, you know.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I I thought the relievers they brought out there are
- 17:01Speaker 1: perfectly fine. The Cubs needed to put up better, better
- 17:04Speaker 1: offense against those guys. But I don't know, you know
- 17:07Speaker 1: that they're able to do send out how many do
- 17:12Speaker 1: you remember how many relievers the Brewers sent out.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Six six, six and they went.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Six relievers within so seven pitchers. They're able to do
- 17:23Speaker 1: that and really limit the Cubs offense. You know, there's
- 17:27Speaker 1: no reason the Cubs can't match them. That that group
- 17:29Speaker 1: was was, it was fresh, but the plan didn't work.
- 17:33Speaker 1: These guys are gassed and the starters are gassed clearly,
- 17:37Speaker 1: and and it just kind of like it it was
- 17:39Speaker 1: a domino effected that started in April with Justin Steel
- 17:42Speaker 1: going down and and then and continued into September. Like
- 17:47Speaker 1: just bad bad timing, bad injuries. These things did not
- 17:50Speaker 1: work out for the Cubs, and it looks like it
- 17:54Speaker 1: could be what cost them their season.
- 17:57Speaker 2: And like, I have not fully looked at all of
- 18:02Speaker 2: the Brewers coverage yet. It was a late late night
- 18:05Speaker 2: and a quick turnaround here. But the Brewers are totally
- 18:11Speaker 2: lined up for Game three too. I mean, Quinn Priester
- 18:15Speaker 2: hasn't thrown yet. He had an excellent season. He grew
- 18:19Speaker 2: up in a Cubs fan in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I believe he went to some of the twenty sixteen
- 18:28Speaker 2: World Series games because his family had some connections through
- 18:32Speaker 2: work to the Cubs organization. And then yet this series
- 18:37Speaker 2: was set up for relievers too, with all these off days,
- 18:40Speaker 2: to the point where you're probably gonna use your a
- 18:44Speaker 2: relievers more than your starters anyways, And so they were
- 18:50Speaker 2: Walkee's best relievers were not pushed in Game one. They
- 18:56Speaker 2: get an off day, you have Monday, Game three off day,
- 18:59Speaker 2: Game two, Like, you gotta think Pat Murphy and his
- 19:04Speaker 2: staff will be going forward to put the Cubs away
- 19:10Speaker 2: in Game three. They're gonna have the pitching to do it,
- 19:12Speaker 2: whereas the Cubs are really kind of gasping for air.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Here and in the next segment we can get into babe,
- 19:20Speaker 2: talk yourselves into being optimistic if you're Cubs fan. But
- 19:25Speaker 2: I guess you know, warning like it's gonna kind of
- 19:29Speaker 2: strain credibility.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Yeah, let's take a quick break talk about game October.

- 20:46Speaker 1: really good for four innings, the type of outing that
- 20:50Speaker 1: you said, you know, if it wasn't that short series,
- 20:53Speaker 1: and the way they were looking at how they wanted
- 20:55Speaker 1: to use their bullpen and really lean into it that series.
- 20:58Speaker 1: He could have gone six or seven innings. He was
- 21:01Speaker 1: dominant and he looked really good to end the season.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I think he feels really good right now. He's feeling confident,
- 21:08Speaker 1: he feels like his stuff is at its peak. That's
- 21:12Speaker 1: I think that's where your optimism has to stem from.
- 21:16Speaker 1: If you want to believe. Obviously, this team is going
- 21:19Speaker 1: to believe and say the right things. I think what
- 21:23Speaker 1: if Pete say is like, I'd be an idiot if
- 21:25Speaker 1: I didn't. I didn't think I'd be a fool if
- 21:28Speaker 1: I didn't think we could come back. He's right. If
- 21:34Speaker 1: any of those players or any of those coaches are
- 21:36Speaker 1: telling the media that we're done when you're not done,
- 21:40Speaker 1: when the season's not over yet, it would be embarrassing.
- 21:44Speaker 1: So that's what they have to do. That's what they
- 21:45Speaker 1: have to say. And obviously it's possible it has happened before.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It is highly unlikely. We just explained what's going on
- 21:54Speaker 1: with this team right now. I wouldn't be surprised if
- 21:57Speaker 1: the offense showed up suddenly, because that's that's how offense
- 22:01Speaker 1: works in baseball when you have some talent. But it's
- 22:05Speaker 1: just really gonna be hard to piece together into pitching.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Tyon could get them to a game. Four boy will
- 22:13Speaker 1: be rested. I guess four days rest, but I just
- 22:18Speaker 1: don't know we we can like second guess all the
- 22:21Speaker 1: pitching decisions. I just you know, like they ran out
- 22:24Speaker 1: of it. And now you've got to lean on on
- 22:26Speaker 1: Tyon and hope that he hope that he is at
- 22:31Speaker 1: his best and can extend this series a little further.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Yeah, you start with going back to Wrigley Fields, Tyon
- 22:43Speaker 2: on the mound, I don't know, a rainy day off
- 22:48Speaker 2: to clear your head. The sense of routine and trust
- 22:53Speaker 2: in the process that the Cubs have exhibited all year
- 22:58Speaker 2: when you get into our tober every day, it is
- 23:02Speaker 2: precious and I'm sure those players in the clubhouse will
- 23:07Speaker 2: you know, appreciate the chance just to keep running it
- 23:11Speaker 2: back out there for howevery many hours are left in
- 23:14Speaker 2: the season. But like we talked about previously, you can
- 23:20Speaker 2: sometimes just sense it when a team is just kind
- 23:24Speaker 2: of out of gas. I go back to when we
- 23:27Speaker 2: were there ten years ago. Cubs looked awesome and then
- 23:33Speaker 2: the NLCS hit they're pitching was sort of running on fumes.
- 23:39Speaker 2: They're playing a team that was just like totally locked in,
- 23:43Speaker 2: a pitching staff that just kind of knew every hole
- 23:48Speaker 2: to exploit. Just the momentum just kind of wore a
- 23:54Speaker 2: team down and that doesn't last, like the Mets didn't
- 23:56Speaker 2: win the twenty fifteen World Series. But at this particular moment,
- 24:04Speaker 2: the Brewers are just so dialed in and they are
- 24:08Speaker 2: not quite a Cinderella team at this point. I mean,
- 24:14Speaker 2: William Contreras, with the celebration you mentioned, I mean, you
- 24:21Speaker 2: just made a great comparison between Cheerio and Tucker. You'd have,
- 24:29Speaker 2: if necessary, Freddie Peralta in a Game five waiting in Milwaukee.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I just don't see it. I'm sure there'll be forty
- 24:42Speaker 2: thousand fans at Wrigleyfield hoping otherwise. But yeah, for the Cubs,
- 24:48Speaker 2: you just got to survive Game three. You know, they're
- 24:52Speaker 2: going to expend everything they have in terms of pitching
- 24:56Speaker 2: resources to try and force the game fo.
- 25:00Speaker 1: But just.
- 25:02Speaker 2: It's like the Cubs said, I Bee, it was Michael
- 25:05Speaker 2: Bush after they lost Game two in the Padres in
- 25:08Speaker 2: the Wildcard series. It's like, this is a series, and
- 25:10Speaker 2: that's always important to remember of like you kind of
- 25:13Speaker 2: have to take a little bit wider angle at times,
- 25:17Speaker 2: and the Cubs have been good at that of just
- 25:18Speaker 2: the managing a three game series and avoiding a sweep
- 25:22Speaker 2: or you know, kind of taking game one and then
- 25:25Speaker 2: setting themselves up for Game three. Like that's kind of
- 25:27Speaker 2: the rhythm of the baseball season. It's not the Bears,
- 25:30Speaker 2: where every week is like the super Bowl. But when
- 25:34Speaker 2: you apply that logic here, like, there's no no case
- 25:37Speaker 2: to be made for the Cups.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how I feel it. It's tough to make
- 25:42Speaker 1: a good case for them to win this series, you know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: push it to four. Sure, if you want to believe,
- 25:49Speaker 1: I am not going to tell you not to. I'm
- 25:53Speaker 1: struggling to find the optimism with this group. You need it,
- 25:57Speaker 1: Like the optimism was you needed to take one of
- 26:00Speaker 1: those first two and then then you can see a
- 26:03Speaker 1: path obviously, But with Freddy Perolta looming, I assume they
- 26:08Speaker 1: hold him off to Game five. Maybe, like I I'm
- 26:11Speaker 1: be surprised if Murphy just says, like, let's let's finish
- 26:14Speaker 1: them off, because that's a risk a like you have
- 26:18Speaker 1: a chance to like have shown they can beat them
- 26:20Speaker 1: without pretty Parolta like. But maybe maybe he just goes
- 26:24Speaker 1: with him in Game four and says, I don't want
- 26:26Speaker 1: to overthink this and let me like, I don't want
- 26:28Speaker 1: to risk uh sending this to a game five, and
- 26:31Speaker 1: I don't want to rip, and I don't want to
- 26:33Speaker 1: overthink it and say like, oh, I can save him
- 26:35Speaker 1: for game one. You shouldn't. That's it's a dangerous way
- 26:38Speaker 1: of thinking, you know what I mean. But we'll see,
- 26:41Speaker 1: We'll see what happens. If he even gets to a
- 26:43Speaker 1: Game four, Wriggly will hopefully the energy will be back
- 26:48Speaker 1: to Wrigley. I don't think the fans are going to
- 26:51Speaker 1: be all solid just because they're down. Duoh, it's a
- 26:54Speaker 1: playoff game at Wrigley. They'll they'll be trying to will
- 26:57Speaker 1: their team to come back in this series. They've seen
- 27:01Speaker 1: it before with this organization. It has been a while.
- 27:04Speaker 1: It has been a long time. Twenty sixteen was actually
- 27:07Speaker 1: a long time ago. So yeah, it's tough to feel optimistic.
- 27:13Speaker 1: And that's, you know, dot. I don't blame anyone for
- 27:17Speaker 1: hanging their head and thinking that this season is over,
- 27:20Speaker 1: because that's, you know, it's very fair for fans to
- 27:23Speaker 1: feel that way. And I'm gonna let the optimists feel optimistic.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But I think we've watched these first two games and
- 27:29Speaker 1: it's pretty clear what kind of brand of baseball the
- 27:33Speaker 1: Brewers play, and they're they're a really strong team. The
- 27:36Speaker 1: Cubs played them evenly all season long, so it is
- 27:39Speaker 1: a little disappointing to see these first two games and say, Okay,
- 27:42Speaker 1: they look overmatched, because I don't think they are purely
- 27:47Speaker 1: overmatched by the Breweries, but clearly they have work to
- 27:51Speaker 1: do and they're not at their best right now, and
- 27:55Speaker 1: when they're not at their best, they aren't able to
- 27:56Speaker 1: piece it together. Sorry, go ahead, I.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Was said, no doubt, there's nothing, nothing, nothing else left
- 28:05Speaker 2: to uh be said. It's like how some of the
- 28:08Speaker 2: players when they found it's just like thanks guys, and
- 28:11Speaker 2: then just turn around.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, all right. Thanks for listening
