- 0:00So welcome back to fostering faith. I'm gonna
- 0:02be your host Tracy and welcome here to fostering
- 0:05faith where we are fostering our faith together
- 0:07We don't have it all figured out But we are walking
- 0:10in faith together because we are better together
- 0:13and so in this episode 2 of October We are waiting
- 0:16without losing heart and so in this episode waiting
- 0:20can feel passive But biblical waiting is an active
- 0:23posture of trust through high back at Abraham
- 0:26and Sarah and Jesus parables of the persistent
- 0:29widow I'm gonna explore the difference between
- 0:32faithful waiting and frantic striving. And so
- 0:34hopefully you're gonna learn how to keep praying,
- 0:37resist comparison, recognize premature solutions,
- 0:42and build a practical waiting rule for the weeks
- 0:45ahead. And so again, welcome back to Fostering
- 0:47Faith. I'm gonna be your host Tracy, and we're
- 0:49gonna be in week two of our series, When God
- 0:52Feels Silent. Faith. in the waiting. And so last
- 0:55week we made room for the honest question, God,
- 0:59where are you? We learned how to lament through
- 1:02pain and keep talking to God, even whenever we
- 1:05feel like he's silent, but he's not absent. And
- 1:08so today we're gonna be talking about what happens
- 1:10when the silent lasts longer than we expected.
- 1:14And most of us can wait if we know exactly how
- 1:17long the wait will be. 10 minutes in the store,
- 1:20three days for a package, two weeks for test
- 1:23results. A clear ending gives us something to
- 1:26count on, to look forward to. But spiritual waiting
- 1:29rarely comes with a countdown clock. You may
- 1:33not even know the relationship will heal when
- 1:38the door will open, when the diagnosis will change,
- 1:41when the grief will soften, and when the direction
- 1:43will become clear. And the longer we wait, the
- 1:46more tempting it becomes to force movement just
- 1:49as we can feel in control. In our anchor scripture,
- 1:52passion says, rest in God alone, my soul, for
- 1:56my hope comes from him. Waiting asks a difficult
- 1:59question. Is my hope in God or only in the outcome
- 2:04I want God to give me? And so let's pray. Father,
- 2:08you know how tired we become in long seasons.
- 2:11Strengthen the person who feels close to giving
- 2:13up. Show us the difference between faithful action
- 2:16and fearful striving. Help us wait with open
- 2:19hands, attentive hearts, and honest hope. In
- 2:23Jesus' name I pray, amen. And so waiting is not
- 2:27doing nothing. The biblical word translated wait
- 2:30often carries a sense of hope, expectation, and
- 2:33trust. Waiting on God is not spiritual laziness.
- 2:37It is refusing to run ahead of him while remaining
- 2:40faithful to what he has already promised in front
- 2:43of us. In Habakkuk, it begins to ask how long
- 2:47God will allow violence and injustice. God answers,
- 2:50but the answer includes more waiting. And then
- 2:53in chapter two, the prophet says he will stand
- 2:56at the watch post, a station himself on the tower,
- 3:00and he will wait and watch to see what God will
- 3:04say. That posture is active. Habakkuk is alert.
- 3:08He's listening. He is positioned. He is not confused
- 3:11waiting on disengagement. When God tells him
- 3:15to write the vision clearly and says that even
- 3:18if it delays, he should not wait for it, the
- 3:22righteous person will live by faith. Faith lives
- 3:24in the gaps between God, what God has and what
- 3:28he said and what we can see. So in that gap,
- 3:31here's Some emails to send, applications to complete,
- 3:35conversations to have, appointments to attend,
- 3:37boundaries to set, meals to make, children to
- 3:41care for and work to do. Waiting on God does
- 3:44not mean neglecting today's obedience because
- 3:47tomorrow is unclear. The question is not, can
- 3:50I do anything? The question is, what is mine
- 3:54to do today? And what am I trying to control
- 3:57that belongs to God? And so temptations are everywhere.
- 4:01Temptations to manufacture answers is because
- 4:04we have really no patience. And so we can see
- 4:08this even whenever we look back into scripture.
- 4:10As we walk back through Abraham and Sarah, they
- 4:13received God's promise for a son, but years passed.
- 4:17In Genesis 16, Sarah proposed a plan involving
- 4:22Hagar, and Abraham agreed. And so if you don't
- 4:25know that story, go back and read it. They attempt
- 4:29to secure the promise through their own arrangement,
- 4:32through deep pain to everyone involved. And we
- 4:36should read that story with care because Hagar
- 4:38was a vulnerable person who suffered under the
- 4:41choice of others. And God saw her. The point
- 4:45is not to reduce her life to an illustration.
- 4:48The story shows that a human cost can follow
- 4:51when fear, power, and impatience are combined.
- 4:56We also manufacture answers. We accept a relationship
- 4:59we know is unhealthy because loneliness feels
- 5:03unbearable. When we call a reckless decision
- 5:06quote -unquote faith because waiting feels humiliating,
- 5:10we twist circumstances into signs. We pressure
- 5:14people for certainty that they cannot give. We
- 5:17lower our clear biblical boundaries because shortcuts
- 5:21looks like relief. And not every open door is
- 5:24God's direction. And not every delay means that
- 5:28you should push harder. Before making a major
- 5:30decision in the silent season, ask, does this
- 5:33choice agree with scripture? Is this honest,
- 5:37wise, loving? Am I acting from peace and conviction
- 5:42or panic and scarcity? Have I invited counsel
- 5:47from a mature person who is willing to tell me
- 5:49no? Oftentimes, whenever we want something, we're
- 5:52going to go to somebody that... agrees with us.
- 5:55And so making sure that we're picking mature
- 5:58people that know faith, that know scripture,
- 6:01and they're not afraid to tell you no. And so
- 6:03giving that permission, the authority for people
- 6:06to speak no into your life is so, so important.
- 6:10Waiting becomes dangerous when desperation makes
- 6:12every option look like permission. And oftentimes
- 6:16we reach into scripture and we pull out something
- 6:19to make our sin look okay. And so persistent
- 6:23prayer is not pressure. And so in Luke 18, Jesus
- 6:26tells a parable about a widow who repeatedly
- 6:28appears to an unjust judge. Jesus says the point
- 6:33is that his disciples should always pray and
- 6:36not give up. The parable does not teach that
- 6:38God is a reluctant judge. We must wear down.
- 6:42Jesus is making a contrast. Even if the unjust
- 6:46judge eventually responds, how much more can
- 6:49God's people trust justice and care from the
- 6:52righteous Father? Persistent prayer does not
- 6:55manipulate God. It keeps our relationship with
- 6:58God open through time. And we've talked about
- 7:01this on this podcast before. Our prayers, our
- 7:04persistent prayers, our prayers that seem like
- 7:07begging and we have tears and we have all the
- 7:09things and we have, we're fasting, we're reading,
- 7:11we're doing all the things. And our persistent
- 7:14prayers go unanswered. Just because you persistently
- 7:17pray, you are not going to manipulate God. He
- 7:22is unchanging. He is the same God that he was
- 7:24with Moses and Abraham that he is today. And
- 7:29thankfully so because we don't want our... prayers
- 7:33on a Tuesday to change him, because the whole
- 7:37point of prayer is to change us. And there's
- 7:40a difference between repetition and performance.
- 7:44Jesus warns against empty phrases meant to earn
- 7:47attention, but he also prays repeatedly in Gethsemane.
- 7:52Paul asked more than once for his thorn to be
- 7:55removed, and the Psalms return to the same cries.
- 7:58You are allowed to ask again and again and again.
- 8:02He were allowed to bring the same thing, the
- 8:04same name, the same need, the same tears. Persistence
- 8:07is not proof that God forgot the first prayer.
- 8:10It is the way of refusing to let disappointment
- 8:13close your heart, because whenever you're in
- 8:16prayer, your heart is open to God. And at the
- 8:19same time, persistent prayer includes surrender.
- 8:23Jesus prays, if it is possible, let this cup
- 8:27pass for me, yet not as I will, but your will.
- 8:32Surrender is not pretending that we don't care.
- 8:35It is placing what we care about in our father's
- 8:39hands. And so waiting becomes especially painful
- 8:44when someone who receives what you wanted. They
- 8:48announced the pregnancy, they got the job, their
- 8:51ministry is growing, their child came home, their
- 8:54test was clear, and the relationship has been
- 8:56restored. and you can be grateful for that other
- 8:59person and grieve for yourself at the same time.
- 9:03Those emotions can exist together. What matters
- 9:06is what you do with them. Comparison turns another
- 9:09person's blessing into evidence against God's
- 9:13goodness towards you. It says that they are limited
- 9:16supply of grace and someone else received your
- 9:19portion, which is absolutely not true because
- 9:24we serve a God who is mighty and big and he has
- 9:28no limitations. He has grace and mercy for all
- 9:31of us because we are all listening to this podcast
- 9:33because he's given us another day. His grace
- 9:37is abundant and new every day. But the other
- 9:39person's timeline is not a prophecy about yours.
- 9:42Your story cannot explain what God is doing in
- 9:46you. When comparison arises, blame them honestly
- 9:50if you can. And so if you cannot yet celebrate
- 9:53publicly without unraveling, choose a quiet prayer
- 9:56and give yourself an appropriate space. Then
- 10:00bring your grief to God or a trusted person.
- 10:02You don't have to shame yourself and having a
- 10:06tender place. I mean, in that same instance,
- 10:09like whenever we see people others victory. It's
- 10:12gonna be hard at first, and that's okay. God
- 10:15is changing us every day. And so taking that,
- 10:18like, why did they get that and I did it? You
- 10:20can take all that stuff to God. You can lament
- 10:21to God. You can tell Him everything because He
- 10:24already knows. But in that same instance, the
- 10:27door is open. The veil has been torn. We don't
- 10:29have to hide anything from Him. The work that
- 10:32God does while we wait is the most often life
- 10:35-changing. And we often imagine that only meaningful
- 10:40work is the answer at the end. But scripture
- 10:42shows that God is forming people in the middle.
- 10:46Waiting can reveal what we believe we cannot
- 10:49live without. It can expose entitlement, fear,
- 10:53self -reliance, false identity, and it can grow
- 10:56endurance, empathy, wisdom, prayer, and a deeper
- 11:03knowledge of God. And as we wait, and I've talked
- 11:06about this on the podcast so many times, we wait
- 11:09on healing in this family. We wait on the prayers
- 11:13that we have been praying for for 20 years. But
- 11:15in the waiting, we've grown in endurance. We've
- 11:19grown in empathy. We've grown in sympathy. We've
- 11:22grown in wisdom. We've grown in our prayer life.
- 11:26We've grown to know God deeper. And that doesn't
- 11:30mean the weight itself is automatically good
- 11:33or that every painful delay or specifically designed
- 11:37to teach us a lesson. Although I do think that
- 11:40there's lessons to be had. And if we take those
- 11:43to God, he will teach us if we're willing. We
- 11:46live in a world that is affected by sin, injustice,
- 11:49illness, and other people's choices. But God
- 11:52is able to work within what we did not choose.
- 11:56And Romans five says, suffering produces endurance,
- 12:00character, and hope. It does not say suffering
- 12:02feels good. It says that grace can produce something
- 12:05in us that pain alone could not guarantee. The
- 12:09goal is not to become impressive at waiting.
- 12:13The goal is to become more dependent on Christ
- 12:16within it. And so here's a building waiting rule.
- 12:21And so here is your practice for this week. create
- 12:24a simple waiting rule with four lines. And so
- 12:29in that, we are going to be asking some questions.
- 12:34I will keep asking and write the prayer that
- 12:38you are still bringing to God, okay? And then
- 12:42I will keep obeying, line, name one responsibility
- 12:48or command that is clear today. Three. I will
- 12:54not force. Identify one shortcut, one pressure
- 12:59tactic, or impulsive decision that you refuse.
- 13:04Four, I will receive support. Choose one person
- 13:10who can pray, listen, or help you make wise decisions.
- 13:16Put those four lines somewhere visible. They
- 13:19will not make the wait easy. but they can keep
- 13:23the weight from becoming shapeless. And give
- 13:26yourself some time to reassess practical decisions.
- 13:29Waiting faithfully does not mean remaining indefinitely
- 13:33in danger, abuse, or preventable harm. If your
- 13:37situation involves safety, concerns, health,
- 13:40serious financial risks, seek qualified help,
- 13:42trusting God, and making wise action belong together.
- 13:47And so as we close, ask yourself, What outcome
- 13:51has become the condition for my peace? Where
- 13:55am I tempted to manufacture movement? What obedience
- 13:59is clear today? And who can help me wait wisely?
- 14:05Let's let us pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank
- 14:07you so much for today. Thank you so much for
- 14:09yesterday. Thank you for these listeners. Father,
- 14:12as we bring you the prayer that we have prayed
- 14:14many times. Protect us from giving up. Protect
- 14:17us from forcing what you have not given. Teach
- 14:20us to act faithfully without trying to control
- 14:23every result. Free us from comparison. Give us
- 14:26courage to celebrate others and grace to grieve
- 14:30honestly. From endurance without hardening our
- 14:34hearts, show us today's obedience, today's bread,
- 14:37and today's mercy. Our hope comes from you. In
- 14:41Jesus' name, I pray. Amen. Amen. Thank you guys
- 14:45so much for listening. If anyone you love is
