So today we'll be discussing Doc Martin's season two, Patty. Come through and welcome back to podcast Port Win. Patty V: Hi everybody. Chesla Wechsler: Good to see you. So why don't we just launch right in? What would you like to say about season two? Patty V: I say that I enjoyed getting to know the characters a little more. And you know, s I would say I felt like some of it was predictable, some of it really surprised me. I don't know if I like any character any more or less than I did before. I just feel like more like I'm getting to know them. Chesla Wechsler: Sure, sure. Of course we lost one, right? Patty V: Yes. And that was a surprise and I must admit I'm a Googler and I'm like, where's Elaine? 'Cause I thought that Pauline would be like a sub for an episode or two and then I'm like, I'm three lep episodes in, she's still here, I'm four, she's still here, she's still here, and so then I Googled it and I was like, What? She's gone 'cause there Pauline is a little bit more she still gives him she gives Doc Martin grief about when he's Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. She's gone. She's gone. Patty V: you know, being rude or whatever or what she perceives as rude. But she's not quite as I feel like she's a little more industrious and a little more she just does her job, knows how to do her job, than her cousin. Chesla Wechsler: E Elaine was useless. And yeah, and and Pauline seems to be professional, but like you said, she still gives it to the doc. Patty V: Pretty much. Yeah, and I kind of was waiting for Elaine to grow a little bit more than I feel like I ever saw in season one. So I feel like I guess in some ways I'm happier with Pauline because she's got enough competence that you can see why he keeps her around. But there's still some comic relief and she's funny or whatever, so Chesla Wechsler: I I really enjoy the actress Catherine I think it's Parkinson? I think she just won an award in England. Sort of like the equivalent of their Emmys, so it's nice to see that she's she's doing well. but yeah, I she I just love the fact that she worked at a vet's office. Patty V: Yeah. I'm I'm trained. I worked in a Vexel office, yeah. That was Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And all all the patients are under their first name and it's like worked great there. and Al, of course, goes for the receptionist. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, that that was a little bit interesting, but yeah, I mean I guess it it it makes some sense. Elaine it sh seems like Elaine's not coming back, so he's gotta move on. And maybe it's a little weird that he moves on with the receptionist the same, job role and her cousin, Chesla Wechsler: It's almost like I mean, how many new people are there in the village? Patty V: Yeah. I I c you know, that's one thing that strikes me episode after episode, 'cause they often end on a walk and you get this beautiful view and you're like, you know, this would have to be millions and millions of Euros homes, you know, like not Euros, I guess, they're pounds, but it's gotta be this couldn't be some little poor hamlet because Th the beautiful scenery, they're so close to water, it would have to be so expensive and does this really this really fit? So I have a little bit of trouble reconciling that. Chesla Wechsler: the scenery itself to me is a character of the show. Patty V: Yeah, I kinda s it kinda feel that way. I I wanna make sure I see it every week, you know, every every episode I mean. but it really kinda hit home to me. there was the episode where I can't remember which one it was, maybe three, where there were brothers that all looked not quite right and they had salmonella or some digestive Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Patty V: and then their father who turned out to have, you know, mental health issues and their their house wasn't so great. It and, you know, fallen into disrepair and they looked, frankly, poor. And it was just so hard to reconcile could there be a house that poor in this beautiful waterfront area. But so maybe that's what w what you're saying you hit the nail on the head there that there's Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. Patty V: not a lot to do there but like the fishing industry and maybe farming and they're not super lucrative and yes there's houses and plus me with my US state of mind, England is old and there's you know, houses that i in in the US if your house is a hundred years old, that's ancient. Not true in England, you know? So Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yeah. Yeah, I know it's fun my ho my house is a hundred years old and it doesn't look anything like Fern Cottage. Which is only from the eighteen hundreds, so that's the that's the surgery. But of course the internals of the surgery are a set. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Well Yeah. And I still notice every time they walk around inside that house how he has to duck for the doorways are so small and and you know. Chesla Wechsler: And that is true. I mean, even in even in the actual Fern Cottage, because we we went on vacation and we stayed there, a friend of mine came and stayed with us and he's like six one, six two and p he whacked his head coming in from the kitchen into the dining room. Like so but that that's that was just the way the house was fixed up. But yeah, those are the the flints, Wallace and Patty Flint. And I happen Wallace is just one of my favorite characters in the series. He's just Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: He does the right thing. You can tell his heart's in the right place. His brother is sick. He's sick. His father is acting, off. And he's not supposed to talk to the doctor. He's not supposed to talk to anybody about what's going on. But he knows he knows what he needs to do. Patty V: He he knows he needs the doctor's help and he has to and he yeah, and then the the whole thing at the end where they wanted to thank him because you know, the doctor's thinking, they're gonna hate me because I took her father away, but they were actually grateful because they're like, Okay, now he's gonna get help and the present that they gave him, that was something with the stuffed dog dog, vicious dog. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yes. And they th and and they have to explain that no, it got hit by a car. It's not like they even see the tire marks or whatever it is. ahead. Patty V: he was trying to be the mother and the father to them and would go in and out of character and and Chesla Wechsler: And, Sergeant Milo's sister Sandra, the holistic, you know, doctor, was giving people things that she shouldn't have, and she gave him stuff without ever seeing him. And I it I I get the sense that Mr. Flint was probably not in great shape to begin with, but he was doing his best by his sons after his wife left and then Patty V: Yeah. Right. Yeah, he loved him in his own I mean, he was everything he did, however warped it seemed, was because he cared for them, not because yeah, he was a tyrant. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah, and that whatever holistically she gave him, she kind of sort of tipped him over the edge of something into some level of delusion. But I liked Mark and how Mark and the doc go out to the house and Mark is kind of like, I'm not so sure about this. Or this is breaking and entering. I'm not sure if we're actually allowed to be in here. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So Chesla Wechsler: Well you had wanted Mark to have a love interest. Patty V: Th had wanted Mark to have a love interest, is that what you said? Yeah. well that that you know, that was that was really sad. because that was part I think I could see coming when he has the physical and you find out and you know that that he's the doctor's gonna send it off for tests and you say that's gonna come back poor Mark. And it did. And then you find out that the Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, that was one of your predictions. Patty V: The girlfriend is pregnant. And the fact that he wanted to ask her to marry him so early and she just jumped on it and said yes raised a red flag to me. so I was expecting something. I I mean I hadn't figured out what it was, but as soon as he went and they h had that test, I I said, Okay, here's what's gonna happen You know, and that one I was right. But you know, sometimes when something is predictable Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Patty V: I mind it and I sort of dismiss the show like they should be better writers than that. But here I didn't, if that makes any sense. Chesla Wechsler: I get it. When I was watching that episode and you know, I'm a big fan of Mark, so it it hurt me to see his heart broke in this way. But I didn't I didn't see her being pregnant coming. but I did Patty V: Not until he had the fertility test and you knew that he was gonna have a problem. Chesla Wechsler: Even then I you know, it's it's hard because I it's hard to go back and try to remember like how did I initially think of it because I've seen it so many times. But I don't remember feeling like, okay, he's gonna be sterile and she's gonna be pregnant. Like, how's that gonna work? I didn't see that g I I did see that Patty V: Yeah. Well I'm not sure I exactly saw that coming, but I knew that that was gonna be an issue somehow and yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Sure. Yeah. Then you know you think like maybe she'll break up with him because she wants kids. Like there's there's all sorts of ways it could go. Patty V: Right. But I didn't trust her in the beginning, you know, so I I didn't think she yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And the Salvation Army guy. Like you you're kinda thinking there's a new person in the village and there's a Salvation Army guy looking for a person. Like that plot kinda has to come together somehow because you can't just have this guy come and then leave, not having found his person, but we knew everybody else. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, I didn't understand how that worked. I guess I really don't know how the Salvation Army works. Do they go around it looking for lost people? It almost seemed like more she was being carted away to jail because of f you know, prior fraud. And I wouldn't think the Salvation Army would be involved in that. That would be like police work, but Chesla Wechsler: I don't know. That Right, and sh and they weren't. That man that man was coming to not have the police involved. Because when he was looking for her, I think somebody's yeah, somebody said, Can you why don't you just check with the constable? And w it's like we try not to involve the police because the family she her mother's dying of cancer and just wants to see her again or something. Patty V: Yeah. The family was trying to yeah. Yeah. But even any of that I didn't know the Salvation Army looked yeah at all like for people like that. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I might look it up. I did not know that either. Patty V: But even it was brief and I knew it wouldn't last, I was ki I was happy to see Mark happy for a ev a a little while. Chesla Wechsler: I He was thrilled. I mean he was so excited. You know. And then of course, you know, i his when when Martin finds out how pregnant she is, boy did she turn, huh? Patty V: Yeah. W when he finds out how pregnant she is, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: She was like Yeah, I mean I didn't realize that you could tell how old the baby was and she was less like you can't tell him. If you do, I'll sue you. Mark Mark and I are getting married. 'Cause could you tell like that I don't even know if she really loved him even. She wasn't that worried about him when he got bitten by the snake. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, no. yeah, that was but but I wasn't that surprised because I already didn't trust her but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: Yeah, I mean it wa wasn't surprising to me that she said that, but he didn't have to violate, you know, Mark was his patient and he had test results to give to Mark and Mark could make connect the dots and, you know, at first didn't want to and then eventually I'm I'm glad that it didn't take too long for him to see the light 'cause I wouldn't have been happy if they dragged that out. Chesla Wechsler: That's right. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, 'cause you don't want to see the guy getting, taken advantage of or manipulated when you know the truth. Right? So but thinking of not dragging things out, we've got the whole plot of Al wanting to know wh if Bert was his real father. And but it was wrapped up in one episode. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was yeah, that was interesting that it that it wasn't longer. And you know, I've had my I still have a little bit of an issue with Bert that some of his attempted teasing of Doc Martin I feel is a little bit too mean. so but you know what? We're all imperfect people, so that's there's things to like about him and that particular thing I don't like about him, but but he clearly loves his son, even if he doesn't always, you know, do the right thing or say the right thing with him, 'cause again, imperfect people. So I yeah, I kinda wanted that to be okay for the two of them, whatever the results are, Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I watch a lot of videos and do a lot of reading and stuff because of the stories that I write to try to capture Britishisms and and and be less American in my writing. And insulting someone you love is pretty typical. Patty V: Yeah, I guess. I I have a good friend from high school that born in England but grew up in the US and then moved back to England in her twenties and is still there and so every once in a while, I will ask her Is this going on in England? Is it how do British c do do British people view this differently from Americans? And but it's, you know, one data point. So but I I'm and especially in the last like five, ten years, I feel like the world's changed some. I ask her a lot more questions like that than I used to. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yep. Yeah, yeah. Our our niece is from York the York area of England. And she's a teacher and she says that she writes things on people's papers and they think they're getting a compliment. She's basically like, It's a scathing comment and they don't realize it 'cause she teaches here in the US and and she'll write that bold choice and bold choice is pretty much like what the hell? Yeah, yeah. So it's it's pretty funny. Patty V: wow. Why what are you doing? Why did you say that? Yeah. That's funny. one of the episodes that I I I don't know if I would say liked the most, but I felt something when they Martin's parents came for a visit. my gosh, the mother. I'm not a violent person, but boy did I want to slap her. She just like Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: Even if she felt Like as a thirty year old or however old she was when she had Martin, that you know, she wanted to feel sexy again and she wished her husband viewed her the way he'd used to. she never grew out of that. She never she she just resented her forty year old or whatever you're supposed to be, son because her husband didn't think she was she didn't feel like her husband thought she was sexy enough anymore. And and she had no remorse whatsoever and she was just I thought an awful person. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. She she was so cold. And and Patty V: Yeah, and and not that the father was great, but she was worse, much worse. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, he Christopher Ellingham, I mean, when Martin and he are coming back from the pub and they just met Mark with Julie and he Christopher Ellingham says that sh he's gonna have to lock her up to keep her and it's but it's better than you. You're gonna have to drug him. I mean, he's cruel too. He's definitely cruel. But Mar Yeah. Patty V: Yeah. yeah. He he he definitely was, but towards the end he sort of apologized and said, I you should do what you want to do and I shouldn't have told you, but but I I wasn't sure how genuine that was. but the the mother was just the I I w I just couldn't believe it. And it gives you some insight into how could this guy grow up not being rude all the time, you know? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Well, I mean you you get the sense here that this is a guy who has basically not been loved, who's been s right, right, but that's like Summers up until he was like eleven for a couple of weeks basically. but so he in his in his home life, which it doesn't sound like he had much of because they sent him off to boarding school very young and Patty V: No. Well except by the aunt. Auntie Joan. Yeah. Right. Right. Right. Right. Chesla Wechsler: And during his holidays he could stay there or spend it with Aunt Joan in the summer, so he really wasn't that's 'cause even his mother says that's why we sent you away to school. It's like we we wanted you out of the house as much as possible. And she's just Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Mind boggling like why did you have a kid in the first place? But Yeah. But Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. But I'll I'll tell ya it it explains a lot about him because think of the think of the hurt of that and think of the the walls that you build to like maybe Patty V: Well yeah I mean how could you not feel that inferior, that, I'm a person that people want to get rid of. I'm a person that, people don't like. I'm pr you know how could you not feel that if if that's what you're, told from day one? It would take an awful lot from Auntie Joan to undo that that harm. So Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, especially since it ended young. I mean it ended at eleven, you know. And then after that he was just Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. And there's still a lot of that that's actually for a lot of kids some of the worst time, you know, those teen years and and hormones kicking in and everything. That's so yeah, to lose her then was must just been tragic. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah, and you see that like, I guess Christopher has lost all the money on a golf course, right? He he invested in some some scam golf course and now he's going after Joan's farm, which he sounds like he rode off early on, but now he's claiming half of. And I love the fact that Martin i i says, I'll sell my flat and you won't tell Joan Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. He would sell. Yeah, right. Right. Chesla Wechsler: Right. He doesn't want her to know. Patty V: Yeah, which now that was so amazing and and and that's what Louisa sees in him because it's in some ways hard to imagine that Martin is a person who would do that. but he is. But you don't get to see that side of him very often. So that was Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I mean you you see, I'm trying to think in seas I have to make sure I'm sticking with season two. Caroline Bosman is the radio host who i is like Patty V: She had they thought she was a drunk, but she actually had diabetes. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I mean you see he th you know, he has this poor opinion of her because he thinks she's denying the fact that she's drinking. And then we he finally knows what's going on with her. I mean he goes to her house, he breaks into the house, so you you see he's got this incredible care for people. Patty V: Right. Well y yes, but I could explain that slightly differently. I might say that, he has in his mind I am a doctor, this is my role, this is what I do. So I'm not sure that he's thinking, I really care what happens to to Caroline, like, you know, as a person. I think it was more like, I'm the doctor, she has diabetes, she's in trouble, it's my job to save her. That's kinda how I viewed it, but Chesla Wechsler: Could be, could be. Yeah. But I I I guess the it explains more of the Louisa stuff and what she sees in him. I if it's if you're Yeah, if it's more interpreted that way. and then who else did he save in there? Patty V: Yes. Yes. We can season like you do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: I mean you you can see how he tells Mark pretty gently that he's infertile. Patty V: Yes. That was a little surprising too that he could do that that way. and not just be super clinical and like, well, this is what you have. There's my diagnosis. Goodbye. You know. And and I think there is some he shows a little more humanity to people that aren't being mean or aren't being ridiculous. In other words, he i he he Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Right. Yep. Yep. Patty V: If he thinks people are trying to take advantage of him, like when he's out walking and make an appointment with my surgery and keep going. But but if if they're not I I I just think he's it it it varies a little bit who he's really short with and rude with and and some people he's a little bit less rude. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. I I I think there's a little pattern to that that I thought I detected at some point in the show, but it takes a while to see it. Patty V: Yeah, yeah. It's pretty slow. He's not he's not nice yet. I mean, at the end of season two. There's there's still still a lot of growth needed there, but there's just little slivers that they give you of okay, maybe it's possible kind of thing. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And you still get the sense I think that the you know, the village is the normal people and he's the he's really odd man out. he doesn't fit there tha that well. but y you do you have Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, they're not really rallying around him too much yet. I mean, they he I I don't think he's super appreciated yet, but there's hope. Yeah. But there was something, I don't know if this was episode six or seven. but it was at one point where Martin and Louisa seemed to be getting a little closer. And I found it fascinating and kind of funny that they each said shut up to each other. E even as they were getting closer, he was upset about the way yeah, I think it was episode six. It was upset about the way his mom was treating him and what she was saying. And Louisa was trying to fill him in on something and she's just kinda chattering away. And he said, Shut up. because he couldn't Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: Listen to her then. He couldn't do anything except dwell on what his mother had said. And she was like really taken aback and kind of mad at him for being rude. And then later, when was it Dan Doug is the name was being an ambulance? Yeah, and so the ambulance driver you know, when people see the two of them around town, it's like are they together? What's Da Louisa and Dan Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Danny? Danny Steele? Patty V: And the ambulance driver was like, Are you the wife? And she said, No, and Martin repeated what he had been told and and he told the ambulance driver, Well, they have a history and she didn't like that at all, which I I was a little surprised she reacted as strongly that didn't seem he he he says a lot worse, put it that way. And and she said, looked at him and said, Shut up, Martin And I was like within a few you know Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: Within the sh I guess it was maybe next day in the the episode, but it was only a few minutes apart in the show, that they both said shut up to each other just as they seem to be getting closer and that's not usually what people calling along things. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah. What what did you think about Danny and Louisa? Because I mean they they do have a history, right? They apparently date they were an item. Yeah. Patty V: Yeah. That would to me I was almost with him. Like, what is wrong with that? That is that is true. I mean, maybe he didn't phrase it the best way, but and maybe he should have let her respond to it. But it almost I think the guy seemed surprised. It seemed like she wasn't gonna say anymore, No, I'm not his wife. And I think the the ambulance driver is a little confused, like it 'cause you were with him and it kinda seemed like you you know, and I think Martin was just trying to clarify and Yeah, so I've for some reason I like that found that found that interesting. Chesla Wechsler: And I wonder if that was just a sort of a symptom of Louisa questioning her relationship with Danny. Like all of a sudden s yeah, somebody's l yeah. Patty V: With either one. Yeah, with both like what am I doing with Danny? And and yeah, I don't how would I describe it and do I would I really rather be with Martin and and so forth. But that's one thing overall in kind of across the season, she sees things in him that are good and that she likes and she's attracted to. So af it's been enough time, why is she but she knows what he's like. Why is she so surprised? When he does come out with something, yeah, and impatient with it, like, Martin, that's awful. You know, she doesn't even try to say something like, Martin, do you realize how that sounds? Do you really, you know, she but but she's like, that's awful, shut up, and she runs away. That's and I kind of thought that maybe by now if i you have to decide, lady, if you're if you're interested. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: Yeah, maybe he can change, but some of this is the way he is and he's always gonna be and you have to decide if you can accept that or not. And you can't you know, so but it'll makes it intriguing to see how that's gonna develop, you know. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah. Yeah. And and in and in episode eight, when the two of them are like completely drunk. Patty V: Yeah, that's the one where yeah. I was actually surprised that he drank the wine. I thought he was just gonna sit there and let her drink it. so that that one did surprise me. And it was pretty funny when Pauline comes in the next morning and there he is on the floor with the dog and the body bottle and we're like, Whoa you know. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, I love that episode. Yeah. Well, I thought the two of them, Martin Clunes and Caroline Katz, did a masterful job being drunk. Because Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: It's so easy to just art you know, really exaggerate, slur, you know. But the two of them just looked like they were they knew they were drunk. They were trying to be p enunciate carefully when they were speaking to one another. And she does call him, you know, you're Doc Martin, like just like it says on the tin, you know, Martin Elligham, you're a stick of rock, which I had to look that up. There there's a there's a cool video on that. there Patty V: Overdo it? Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: If you look at the cross section of a stick of rock, it has like a picture or a message like writing on the end of it. So like let's say the stick is like that round piece of candy. And the whole way you're eating it, those words or that design are the entire way through the candy. So when she's saying you're like a stick of rock, it's like you're consistent all the way through. It's exactly what I see and I'm not gonna see anything different the further that I dig. not something we understand here if you don't look into it. But just like you said, I mean, this is him. Monosyllabic, gruff, rude, well meaning. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Buddy thinks you're beautiful. And he can't stop thinking about you. Yeah. going back to something we mentioned before, I get maybe you just I mentioned, talked about how Chesla Wechsler: Yes. That's right. Patty V: Some of the episodes surprised me and some I thought were more predictable. In episode five, I did not write down the name of the characters and I don't know if they were in it before or since, but there was Auntie Jones it was there next door the farm next door to that Auntie Jones. Chesla Wechsler: the Pratts, yeah. Phil Pratt and his wife, yeah. Patty V: Yeah, the press and sh her friend was very sick and she ended up dying while Martin was there and the husband blamed Martin and was seemed like a very rude, mean, unreasonable person, total jerk across the board. You wonder why her friend was even, you know, married to him and so forth. And th then there was the truck driver that came in, it's like is this more chemicals that are gonna pollute her farm? And you're like what is he? Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Patty V: doing and and I had no idea why that guy was there and they they really you know fooled me on that one that and and I still don't know if that guy then I started wondering they still didn't make the the man whose wife passed away the Pratt seem like an okay guy here he had two people who loved him I I just that that was still a little mind-boggling to me Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: But and that he at least had some remorse that he might have caused her death because he said something that shocked her and caused her to die, which Doc Martin said, No, that you know, that's probably not what it was, but okay. But yeah, so that that one was not a predictable eva episode to me at all. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And and you know and and and yeah. I didn't see that coming. I really just thought he was probably throwing pesticides on the lawn. and I think f I think Phil Pratt was having a har he was an older man, right? I think he was having a hard time. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Coming to terms with what he really felt and what his sexuality was, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. I one line in that episode that I thought was pretty funny was Martin's walking into the consulting room and Pauline just goes, Pratt Which is like calling somebody an idiot or something like that. And she just goes, Pratt He goes, Excuse me? Phil Pratt So it's a nice little play on words. Patty V: okay. Yeah. The other thing that maybe you know this from studying Britishisms or whatever, the Dan, when he he did recover from his collapsed lung and seemed like he was trying to reconcile with Louisa and first he's gonna stay here and then he's like, I got this great opportunity, you know, come with me or whatever. and he thanked Martin and he said, Thank you and God for saving me and there were a couple of other times where he mentioned God. I didn't think it was excessive, but I felt like the whole show. I mean Louisa kinda called them on it, like, where did this come from? And and it's one thing that you're religious, I'm not, maybe we're not gonna work together. But I felt a little bit like the whole show was putting down religion in general, period. And I I you know I that w that was a downer to me. I didn't like that. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Okay. Yeah, I just thought it he had gotten churchy on them that they did not see that, I guess, in his past, because if they had a history, I presume he wasn't like that. but Patty V: Right, but did di there was no exploration by them or in the show of what happened and why did he and I again i I noticed it but it's kinda kinda noticeable 'cause nobody else ever mentions God at all in this show. So it's not I I I really didn't think it was excessive. He wasn't carrying around a bible and reading it to people who didn't want to hear it or any anything at all. He would Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Right. Yeah. Patty V: you know, just thanking God a couple of times and I think it came up maybe once with his mother when whether she should or shouldn't be in the home and and so forth. he mentioned it. But I I I didn't think it was that excessive and then I thought they were really putting him down for it and without even asking him why or anything. It's just like, you're a weird God person now and and to me that was a bit of a turnoff. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. think yeah, I I thought he was a l it was a it wasn't just sort of like a thank God. You know, it was a you know, God bless you, Martin. You know, 'cause Martin even comes back and he's like, I didn't sneeze You know. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. But is I don't know, to me, is that so awful? I I Chesla Wechsler: It wasn't it wasn't to me excessive like w like we've seen excessive stuff. Patty V: Yeah, I I don't know, I found myself wondering and I was like, Well, you know, when the royals get married, they do it in a church or th is it all fake or do they not you know, I don't know. It just seemed like that wasn't a whole lot of God and yet it was like, but anyway. Chesla Wechsler: To me it was it was a little bit more than I would be I I wouldn't give him a hard time about it, but I would find that even a little bit just a little unusual, like and I'm not sure if I would think this guy is very religious. I would be thinking this seems like an act. Patty V: A little off putting, even if you believe in that. Yeah. Okay. He's fake. Yeah, that could be. Yeah. I mean Chesla Wechsler: And and I think that's what they were trying to call him out on. Patty V: I guess. Yeah, maybe. But he's probably not gonna be in it more, so I'm not gonna well you know and I don't but I'm thinking that I'm thinking we're done with him but and and we won't really learn any more about that. But maybe we're not done with him. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. You never know in this show. I I tell you when we Chris and I w when Martin finally professes his love for Louisa, we were like Yes And then the next day he blows it. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, that was pretty that was funny. I I don't know why I wrote this down, but there was something else that that Keith, my husband and I thought was was funny when one of the times he walks into the surgery and Pauline's sitting there eating a donut off of her finger like Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yeah. I think that's in the episode that's in On the Edge Patty V: Trying not Try not to bleed, so so that's to the patient so they don't have to get Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. And that's that's the baker. So and he's he's got yeah, I I like the under the underlying Martin's being rude to the patients and it's come to the c it's come to the attention of his bosses, right? So you've got that, you know, Gavin, whatever his name is, Patty V: Yeah. Yeah I didn't really understand that either at first. I don't know how the British medicine works. That I thought he just had a little practice in that town and he was you know, the people in the town paid him and that was that. I didn't really think of him as having a boss. So I didn't realize that he did have people he had to please. Chesla Wechsler: yeah. Yeah, just just you know, educate you and anybody else who who might be hitting season two and doesn't know this. it's the national health system in England hires general practitioners and they have offices around the country. So he's paid through the national health system. When people come to the office, I believe they there's very if there's copays, they're very set. And I think there just might be co-pays for prescriptions. I'm not sure if there are for general practice. I don't think there are. But you just present your ID and it gets billed and you get paid. So he he's fundamentally running a a small business that is a doctor surgery on behalf of the NHS. And and Chris Parsons, who we saw in season one, he was on the board and he's also the guy that Martin talked to and said, I'm quitting, I'm done. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: And and Chris wanted to keep him. That's his boss, Chris. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: But you know, s people had complained, so Chris has to deal with stuff. And so this guy comes and he's he's talking to a variety of different patients and gathering up complaints and if Martin doesn't straighten up he's gonna he's gonna boot Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. The the last episode nine and ten were more intense than some of the other ones because of the the whole, you know, mental health issue and that guy, you know, keeping them hostage and it's not like you can be logical with people that have mental health issues and and so forth. That was yeah, that one wasn't as funny. Those those two episodes were did not have as much humor in them to me. Chesla Wechsler: It's f i I yeah, it's interesting, even as someone who's had mental health problems, I loved those and I thought they were hilarious. Which is I I loved I mean, what you call episodes nine and ten, a lot of people call episode nine, which is on the edge. It was a movie, so it was I think what you watched it on, they split it into two chunks. I watched a just a large episode. I believe it might have been two chunks in England too when it originally aired. I'm not a hundred percent sure. but Patty V: You what? Love? Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: I just thought Chris O'Dowd did a very fun, interesting job playing someone who was bipolar slash schizophrenic. you know, maybe that's not fodder for humor, but i i it Patty V: No, I think he I that actor I thought was was very good. and I found Louisa's dad's character was interesting because he seemed to be lacking some moral fiber in some places or values. but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: He seemed to care about that guy and try to help him and I found that a little surprising. And he was trying to get him he knew that if he stayed on his meds he would be much better off. And when the guy was on his meds, he seemed nice and pretty smart and you know and and I was a little surprised how hard Louise's dad tried to do right by him. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I I think that the characters in Doc Martin are not sort of s single dimensional or two-dimensional. So, you know, it would have been easy to caricature, you know, Terry Glassen into just being a criminal guy who didn't care about his potential partner. Or y they could have even portrayed him as, I just want a stable guy to work with because we've got to pull off this job. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: But I agree with you, you don't have that sense. You get the sense that no, he really wants Jonathan to be on his meds for Jonathan's sake. You know? Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. In some ways I almost thought he was looking after him more than his daughter because yeah and and when it was coming out whether he actually did steal the money from the charity or or if he didn't and I kinda thought he probably did and then when Aunt Jones said I caught him red handed, I'm like, Okay, we're done. That's it, that's it. And I thought I found it Interesting how Louisa handled that when she was talking to him 'cause he was just so adamant that he that he wasn't, and then when she brought that up that, you know, she said she saw you do caught you red handed, he had to fold. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. And I felt bad for Louisa because it's like, you've been lied to your whole life and what we learn is that her her mother doesn't remember her birthday or anything, right? 'Cause it's it's Louisa's birthday and but his her father purportedly was there because it was her birthday and now it ends up he wasn't. if it just coincidentally happened. but you get you know, just like we learn about Martin by learning about his parents Patty V: definitely. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: and how miserable they were. We can learn some stuff about Louisa that she's been abandoned as a kid. Her father was fled the village when she was young, kind of had to leave. villagers came to her rescue. And so she's got trust issues, right? Like who can she really trust? Well, Martin is extraordinarily reliable. So that I think is one of the things that she's drawn to. Patty V: I see what you're saying. She she Martin's she's certainly completely predictable and reliable. Yeah, so that so that steady state she can be drawn to that even if there is some rudeness that goes along with it, maybe. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. He he is not going to lie to her. Patty V: Yeah. No, I don't think he's capable of it because why would you lie? This is this is this is the way it is. Yeah, let's just say it. He doesn't i almost doesn't understand the niceties of softening the blow, you know, whatever. I mean, even when you said he was kinder, ki you know, more kind than he sometimes is when he was giving the bad news to Mark, Chesla Wechsler: You know. I agree. And also like, yeah, just just say it. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Patty V: He wasn't gonna not give it to him and he wasn't gonna he was just gonna say it a little more patiently, not but he would never have withheld anything or yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Right. And when Julie, when she basically says, I'm pregnant, I'm gonna marry Mark, you're not gonna tell him I'll sue you I th doesn't he basically say you need to find a new G P or something? Doesn't he boot her? Yeah. Yeah, so he's got a a heck of a lot of integrity and I think that's something that Louisa values because it's been d denied her. Patty V: Yeah, you can't I'm not gonna yeah. I'm not gonna be your doctor, right. Right. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Like even Danny. I mean Danny's like, Let's stay in my mother's house, we'll refurbish it, we'll get married, we'll stay here and then in the blink of an eye he gets a good job offer and it's like, I'm going here, you can come with me You know, I'm sure you'll get a great job. I really don't care what you want. Patty V: Right. Not there was no partnership there. Chesla Wechsler: I'm trying to think of what other pr predic you you got to see Auntie Joan, right? I know you wanted to see more of Auntie Joan. Patty V: I did and and you know, I find her interesting. I kinda like the character. She's tough, no nonsense, but still, you know, that underneath good heart. She's not rude pr but she's very blunt. So you can sort of see that Chesla Wechsler: Right. She's very blunt. Yep. Patty V: Martin no there's some there's some parallels there and some some commonality in in terms of saying it like it is. she might say it a little more politely than he does, but she tells it like it is too. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I felt bad for her when when she was gonna lose her farm. I mean just Patty V: absolutely. I mean, she's she has clearly worked very hard her whole life and you know, she w wasn't married to the person that was the love of her life really. So you feel sad about that, that th she never had that either and now they're gonna take her house away? my gosh. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Right, yes, yes. And you know, that's not just her house, but it's her income. Patty V: Right. That never did anything for her and lost the money out of his own I'm gonna say stupidity. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. I mean he was probably trying to make a killing on something. It was probably a too good to be true kind of thing and he fell for it. Patty V: Right. Yeah. It was it was not like he it was something that wasn't his fault. It was he made a choice and it was a bad one. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I you were talking about how Margaret Ellingham was like just so just cold and dismissive and evil and stuff. The actress who plays her is Claire Bloom. And I that's Claire Bloom, yeah. I know. Yeah. And she is phenomenal. She is just so good at her delivery. I mean just if y because and th this is blah, I'm blathering here. Patty V: That was Clearview. wow. Wow. Chesla Wechsler: I tend to really gravitate towards actors who can vanish into a character and just c play a whole bunch of different roles equally effectively. And so I saw her in this and then I I just happen to be looking around and I I'm a big Anthony Hopkins fan and one of the movies that he did was Shadowlands. And he did it with Deborah Winger, and it's about C. S. Lewis and his marriage to this person who he kind of marries more like for her convenience, but then he discovers that he actually loves her. And Claire Bloom was in a was in an earlier version of that, and it was called Th Through the Shadowlands, and she plays Deborah Winger's part, which is the love love interest, and she plays an American. Patty V: The love interest, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Who's just l lovely. And she's got a perfect American accent. She's a lovely woman. And it's it was just, you know, yet more demonstration of like that's exactly the kind of actor I want is somebody who can just be be the person, vanish into the role. Patty V: Yeah. The I think was his name, Hugh Laurie, the guy you were a fan of House, right? And so I had not heard of that guy until I watched the T V show House. And then when I would see him interviewed on a talk show while he was still on that show, I was like, What? What? Because, my gosh, he's British. He he totally, tot I mean Chesla Wechsler: Yes, yes. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. Yep. Yep. Patty V: Not all actors do this, but he was totally house. I mean I couldn't have imagined him as as anything else. And then afterwards, I saw I think it was Stuart Little. There was some kids movie that I think I had I think it was before House and I had seen it with my kids when it came out and then it was on TV again later and I was like, That's House! my gosh, that's the same guy? Ugh So I know exactly the feeling that you're talking about. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. You've gotta watch Jeeves and Wooster then, if you wanna see something that's completely different. But I'll tell ya I am in I am in deep mourning this week and I I mean this from the bottom of my heart because I love Sam Neil. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, I knew I knew that he was your favorite. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Ugh. And it's like I am so annoyed on his behalf because he had said that he was not he did not fear death but that it would annoy him because he just has more things he wants to do and he loves living and he just beat cancer in April. And because his immune system was still suppressed, he got pneumonia, and it's like I am furious. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Because what a guy. I mean he got so many people through I mean there's a complete segue from here. got so many people through COVID with his silly little Instagram posts where he would just visit with his animals or sing very poorly with the ukulele, but just such a sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet guy. the kind of guy you feel like you know him from his what you hear about him, but he just seems like a very genuine person and that's just you know, Godspeed Samuel. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: So we talked about Aunt Joan, we talked about the Danny and Louisa. so now we've got two strikes. We got halitosis in the cab, and we've got basically you're a stalker. where do they go from here? You're a stalker! Patty V: But you've got what was the second one? You've got what? You're a stalker, yeah. it's all temporary. I think. That th th I I'm confident that it will that it will progress. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Okay, okay. What about Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Do you think Alan Pauline have a chance? Patty V: I'm he seems more interested than she does in s in some ways. Yeah, I I I don't know. I could I I can see that going either way. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I mean h he did something he did something pretty nasty. I mean to not mail her application was pretty pretty bad. Yeah. Patty V: Right. That was nasty. That was pr I th and and that surprised me a lot about about him, but yeah, so I don't know. and I it one thing I found surprising about her is that how she wanted to be I I think they they call it lifeboat, I guess that's like the rescue people. how she was so so interested in that and so delighted to be like chosen and and Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Patty V: you know, maybe wanting to go to nursing school and and stuff. So that again, that was another those were more reasons why I thought she was pretty different from Elaine. there's much more substance to her. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yes. actually seems like sh yeah, she's got career aspirations. Patty V: Yeah. And it made me wonder if the writers felt like they overdid it with Elaine 'cause she was just so useless and wanted the new character to be not quite so useless. So well, obviously if you bring in a new character not gonna be a carbon copy of the old one, but she's there's definitely a lot more to her. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. So let's let's segue into the best medicine comparisons. Since we're talking about E yeah, so we got Elaine and we've got Elaine and Pauline. So Patty V: Okay. Well I have a couple. Mm-hmm. Yeah, no, I feel like the Elaine in Best Medicine had a little more to her. she wasn't totally useless the whole time. And I must admit that I Googled when I figured Elaine's not coming back to Doc Martin. Is she coming back to Best Medicine or are they gonna get are they gonna bring in Pauline for that? it seems like Elaine's coming back, so they're not they're not making that switch in best medicine. So I found interesting. and let's see, what was the other thing? the other one that really struck me is Mark. I feel like he's so different. He is endearing and he's got almost like an innocent quality about him in Doc Martin. he Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: really wants to do the right thing. He a and at the same time, even with that innocent quality, he doesn't seem inept as a sh as a constable or whatever his sheriff, whatever his title is. He actually seems like he could do his he could do his job and sometimes he does you know, when it comes up he does. There's not as much they don't have that much crime, so but he seems competent. but and and you really want to root for him and Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: You know, nice guy and all of that. And I don't know were they going for that in Best Medicine? If they were, I feel like they missed the mark. Because I really that that whole what I consider fake macho that I feel like the mark character is in Best Medicine is not there. It's not that way in Doc Martin. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, I don't know. Missed the mark. Yeah. Yeah. I agree. there's the Mark Milo the Mark Milo of Doc Martin is one of my favorite characters. And Mark Milo in Best Medicine is one of my least favorite characters. And it's it's very interesting, you know, dichotomy with that. the Elaine Pauline thing, what I think they did in Best Medicine was they decided Patty V: Right. Chesla Wechsler: we're not going to make a personnel change. We're going to have a character who can grow from being sort of a kind of obnoxious at the beginning, but has depth and can learn and become more like, Pauline. So Patty V: even from the beginning, as soon as she realized that in in best medicine, as soon as Elaine realized that he had an issue with blood, she she did have some capability and she f she was willing to like keep a secret Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Patty V: And help him. And she'd seem to have some ability to help him, whether or not she wants to go on and be a nurse like Pauline does. She's there was some competency there that showed fairly early on in in there. And then and you think, okay, there's growth, and then she goes and does the things with her movies and and and becomes silly again. But even though there was there was that and he had to yell at her to stop doing that, but then she would do her work and could do at least some of it. Whereas the Elaine in in I Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Patty V: Doc Martin, I felt like I kept waiting for the growth and didn't see it, but Chesla Wechsler: No. I don't I mean, she did no good. I mean I can't think of a single thing Elaine did well in season one. You know? Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. And and yet the village polled for her, maybe just 'cause she was one of them, you know, loyalty without a lot of logic behind it. But I wondered from what I read, it seemed like the actress just wanted to do something else and left. I d a in Doc Martin. So, they weren't necessarily intending to switch. And I don't know that we could have taken Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. really? Okay. Patty V: ten seasons of Elaine that way. She would have either had to have growth or been fired or something. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I was not unhappy to see Pauline. Yeah. No, I agree. I would say that you know, you're you're now through fifteen episodes. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Fifteen episodes. fifteen episodes of Doc Martin and thirteen episodes of Best Medicine. So, you know, in essence they're pretty close. We've seen some common plot lines. I'm trying to think you saw the Alan Burt one came up here. trying to think what what else did we see in season two that we saw in Best Medicine? Patty V: It's pretty close to the same, yeah. Well there was digestive illness but it wasn't the same in in both, but it wasn't really the same. there was the and the very early in season one there was the the wife with the older husband and the younger lover and passing on the illness or whatever. there's actually Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah the Patty V: Less plot lines that are identical than I was expecting. I I don't know, maybe either that or I'm not remembering the best medicine plots as well. Chesla Wechsler: Trying to Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. I mean th you'll find small plot arcs sort of here and there. w you know, once you know Doc Martin or you know best medicine, you can start saying, I think I saw that in the other one. certainly the the idea that Martin's father goes after Jones farm. Patty V: Yes, it goes after the right. But the I don't think there was an episode in Best Medicine with the Aunt Jones farmer next door. I don't remember that. Anything like that. Yeah. Yeah. But Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, so that's No. Mm mm. Yeah, 'cause it would be a fisherman, right? So there isn't really a fisherman poaching on her her lot or whatever. Patty V: Yeah. The the thing that I find a little bit different, and it this was reinforced because I've been watching Fox the station that Best Medicine is on, to see soccer, or football, depending on where you live. and the Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: All-Star game in the United States. And there was in somewhere in there, there was a commercial for Best Medicine coming back in the fall. And I just looked at that Doc Martin and I feel like in those thirteen episodes he softened, became a little bit more human than I feel like Doc Martin is in his fifteen. Chesla Wechsler: Mhm. I would I would say that when he shows up to the village, he's warmer than Doc Martin. Yeah. Patty V: Even in the very beginning? Yeah. Yeah. Doc the the Doc Martin and the British one is Less human. F further further off, you know, ruder and and and you know i needs more changing to have that relationship with Louisa. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah, I th I think the the idea f I don't think they thought an American audience would necessarily put up with somebody who was as gruff and rude and obnoxious as Martin Ellingham. Patty V: Maybe. But du house was that way and we doc that that sh T V show lasted a quite a while. Chesla Wechsler: But he was only rude to the staff. Right? He wasn't rude to the patients. Was he? Patty V: I think he was some. I think so. I he said he had this thing, everybody lies. And so he would tell the patient like if if he didn't think I mean maybe he was right, but he w he would tell you, You're lying. You're not telling me everything and and I can't tell you if don't. Yeah, yeah, I I think he kinda my memory says it was, but I haven't watched it in many years. But Chesla Wechsler: And there it was s such a No, I don't I d I I'm gonna have to go rewatch. I don't remember that. would say Patty V: But even i i th in some ways that's a b not the best example because I watched House pretty much religiously and I'm like, I would never like this guy in real life. Why am I watching this show? Why do I why am I so enthralled by this show when he's such a jerk? But I was. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yes, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And you know, my impression when I came from watching Doc Martin to watch Best Medicine was when Martin Ellingham shows up in Port Wynn, he is so different, you know, socio economically, with education, the car he drives, everything about him is just like posh elite guy. And he shows up and he's in this rather decrepit house and surgery, like he inherits all of this horrible equipment that he has to completely refurbish. He's not living in a good place. You figure he was living in London, he had a posh flat. And the villagers there are they're quirky but they seem like normal people. Whereas in best medicine, you know, one of the first things that you see is a harbor full of of sail sailboats. Patty V: Yeah. Well there was Chesla Wechsler: Right? And it's like he doesn't seem that far off, you know? And he seems like just a guy who wants to be left alone. He doesn't seem like, a a belligerent guy with a chip on his shoulder. Which is I think Martin Ellingham seems to have a chip on his shoulder. Patty V: That's I think I agree. I think that's a pretty accurate Yeah. Yeah. And maybe that's why he didn't have as far to move. You know f Needle didn't have to move as far. but but it it really struck me having just finished season two and seeing that commercial, I was like, Whoa, he's definitely more human than the guy, you know, Doc Morton. The British Doc Morton has a f farther to go. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Exactly. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Right. But think of think about the parental relationships now, right? So you see Martin Ellingham has these horrible parents. Horrible. Patty V: Well the i i the other ones were bad too, but I don't remember the mother being as bad. Chesla Wechsler: And I don't I I remember thinking they're disappointed in him because he's not doing surgery and they're selfish because it's really like in in best medicine it's like, you know, you mu your mother can't get her hair done. But but the two of them, the mother and father, love each other and are together. Patty V: That's a ru Yeah. Yeah. Right. Right. And but but y you didn't seem to to f I didn't get the feeling that the mother resented him forever, ever since the day he was born. I think Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Well he no, th I mean c it's a completely different plot line. So so so Martin Ellingham has horrible parents and there is no sister who dies in a car accident. Right? Whereas the whole blood phobia thing has its roots in this sister dying in the car accident, and that kind of is what explains the parental dynamics in best medicine of we've never talked about this. Patty V: No, right, right. Yes. And he you you get the feeling in Best Medicine, it would be interesting to see what if if that gets developed more, that if his sister had never died in that car accident, that his parents might have been quite a bit different, that they reacted maybe in a bad way, but in a human way, and maybe they, you know, if they had had therapy or something along the line back then, things could have been different. But at least you felt like there was a reason And you could feel a little bit sorry for them too. Now they they still had the money issue and were gonna stick it to the ant, so that wasn't so good. So, you know, it's not like you really like them like them, but it wasn't so awful. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Right. No. Correct. Yeah. I I thought that the the parents in Best Medicine they have redeeming features and there is some there's fondness betwe like between his mother and Martin, 'cause at the end she's like, I'm s I'm sorry, Martin, right? But but there's also tension and the tension I think is because they have this com enormous thing in their history that they just haven't worked through. And I'm I still have a theory that Patty V: Yeah. Right. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Martin had something to do with the accident. Probably no not something he meant, but you know, th they they just seem like they blame him for everything in best medicine. Like Martin, what have you done now? Martin, what did you do? And it's like, has his whole life been Martin, what did you do? Patty V: It'll be distractive. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Who knows? I mean we'll we'll find out September twenty-second when at least that's the first time we'll know anything new. Patty V: Yeah. Do you know how many episodes it was renewed for or? Chesla Wechsler: I think it was gonna be twelve but it ended up being fourteen or something like that. I believe Josh Charles, they didn't wanna do a full twenty five or whatever it was. I think yeah, I think they they the actors thought that that would be a lot of work. now maybe they'll do that in the future because if if they are gonna get renewed a little earlier, you know, they were time because yeah, I mean 'cause they they came on in January and they went through what Patty V: Because sometimes they only do Yeah, okay. really? To have more time to break it. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: April, May and then it's like, Okay, we got renewed, now we gotta film a bunch of episodes. Patty V: It was pretty far. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Cool. So you're gonna keep watching Doc Martin? Patty V: yeah, I'll I'll keep going. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. And do you have any predictions? Patty V: Hmm, I think that Louisa and Martin are gonna be on again off again, on again off again. That would be one of my predictions. Chesla Wechsler: Does Danny come back? Does does Mark Patty V: I'm less sure about I'm less sure about Pauline and and Al and that actually that's an that's a different I kinda liked Al a little better in Best Medicine. I don't think Alan Best Medicine would have done that. Alan Best Medicine seemed to only want the best for Elaine, even if it didn't involve him. And Alan Doc Martin was little more selfish, I think. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Do you think Danny or Mark complicate the Martin and Louisa relationship going forward? Patty V: In Doc Martin, it doesn't seem like Mark will, but Danny like I said, I kind of thought they were done and he was gonna go away and that was that, and that she realized that even if he doesn't go away, he's not for her. But maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. And maybe if I guess I could sort of see, now that you mention it, if Chesla Wechsler: Okay. What about Patty V: Martin does something that annoys Louisa, which I'm sure is gonna happen, and Mark is there, that she could say, Hey, why don't we go to the dance together or whatever and that I I could I could sort of see like what do they call it, rebound guy or whatever. But not like permanently. Not that that would be my guess. Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Sure. Yep. Okay. Yeah. And we at I think season or episode nine ends with Martin agreeing to having to go to this class to have a better bed bedside manor. Right? So that'll Patty V: Right. Well he kinda had to because he it was he was kinda forced to and then he said he would do anything just to because they were you know, in a hostage situation at the time and but then he kinda had to stick to it, but yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. One of my absolute favorite quotes from the entire series is when that Gavin guy first introduces himself and and a bird poops on Martin and he he he just he takes the guy's card and he just scrapes it off and throws it out. Yep. But then he goes, Can I stop you right there? And walks away. I am dying to use that on someone someday. Patty V: Yeah, that and scrapes it and throws it away. Like that's how interested he is in that guy. Yeah, we like that. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: As a joke or someone that's acting like a jerk? Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Someone who's acting like a jerk. Can I stop you right there? Patty V: Ha ha ha ha. Chesla Wechsler: Cool. Alright, well then we will we will reconvene for season three. You let me know when you're ready, and in the meantime Patty V: Hey.
