Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Thousands turned out well to pound the pavement on the
- 0:03Speaker 1: weekend for the nt City to serve and joining us
- 0:06Speaker 1: on the line to tell us a little bit more
- 0:08Speaker 1: about how it all went. It is Lian Chin, who
- 0:11Speaker 1: is the executive officer of NTI Athletics. Good morning to you, Leanne.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Good morning Katie, Good morning listeners.
- 0:19Speaker 1: A wonderful morning of running yesterday. How many did we get.
- 0:23Speaker 2: In the end? We had two thousand and nine participants yesterday,
- 0:30Speaker 2: absolutely smashing our fortieth record of eighteen eighteen hundred and sixteen.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Wow, that is a phenomenal number, two thousand and nine people, Leanne.
- 0:43Speaker 1: What was the most popular race to take part in?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Well, we had a thousand, one hundred and one in
- 0:51Speaker 2: the twelve kilometer. I think that would have to be
- 0:53Speaker 2: the most ever, so obviously our most popular event. And yes,
- 0:59Speaker 2: I know it's a little bit further, and then twelve
- 1:02Speaker 2: kilometers twelve point seven is probably more precise.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I tell you what I felt every seven hundred meters
- 1:10Speaker 1: after twelve cas yesterday.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yes, you and everybody else I'm getting I've been reading
- 1:17Speaker 2: everybody else's Facebook posts and there's twelve point three, twelve
- 1:22Speaker 2: point five, twelve point seven so maybe it's time that
- 1:26Speaker 2: we formerly got the course measured and ratified.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we could almost call it thirteen. Then we'd
- 1:35Speaker 1: feel like we've gone extra you know, extra fast, doing
- 1:38Speaker 1: an extra kilometer.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Maybe maybe we run all the way to the beach front,
- 1:43Speaker 2: as it happened in the past.
- 1:46Speaker 1: No, that's too far. That seems like just I don't
- 1:51Speaker 1: know if I could do that, Leanne. It was a
- 1:54Speaker 1: fantastic event. Now, Tim Hewittt won the twelve point whatever
- 1:58Speaker 1: it is, for the four time.
- 2:01Speaker 2: That's correct. I mean, the man's a machine here. We
- 2:05Speaker 2: know that he is training for the Gold Coast Marit.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But wow, you know, forty one minutes, not quite the
- 2:12Speaker 2: course record that we had last year, but still a
- 2:16Speaker 2: very fast time.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it was incredibly fast, and it was pretty warm yesterday.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I think we're all expecting, you know, we weren't sort
- 2:22Speaker 1: of expecting it was going to be as cool as
- 2:24Speaker 1: what we've seen in recent days and weeks. But it
- 2:27Speaker 1: was a little bit more humid, which may have had
- 2:29Speaker 1: an impact.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I guess that's exactly right. I think that humidity was
- 2:35Speaker 2: a little bit higher than anticipated. But you know what,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you just get what you get in the dal and
- 2:41Speaker 2: dry season, it didn't rain.
- 2:43Speaker 1: That's exactly right. Now, still in the men's category with
- 2:48Speaker 1: the twelve K I understand that it was a bit
- 2:51Speaker 1: more inclusive maybe than what we've seen in previous years.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And was there somebody who came in second too, was
- 2:57Speaker 1: in a chair in a wheelchair?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yes, so that was Clive Baxter, an amazing athlete. Ye,
- 3:05Speaker 2: his second time doing the City to Serve and he
- 3:10Speaker 2: did cross the line second and we acknowledged him in
- 3:14Speaker 2: a that he won the para event in addition to
- 3:19Speaker 2: the three able bodied winners.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I reckon, that's awesome. Do you think that we may potentially,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you know, down the track, see more power athletes taking
- 3:28Speaker 1: part in the City to Serve?
- 3:30Speaker 2: Absolutely, I think we will. You know it is it's
- 3:34Speaker 2: pretty tough going up Darwin Hill, Darren High Hill, but
- 3:38Speaker 2: you know, if Klieb can do it in a hand cycle,
- 3:42Speaker 2: I think I think it can be achieved by everybody.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah, now, thank you for correcting me, because I wasn't
- 3:47Speaker 1: too sure what it was called. So a hand cycle,
- 3:50Speaker 1: I'll tell you what I can't imagine. I thought it
- 3:52Speaker 1: was hard trying to run up the Darwin High Hill,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but that would be absolutely incredibly difficult stuff.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Oh absolutely, I mean, you know, the men must have
- 4:04Speaker 2: shoulders of steel to a pedal cycle up that hill.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah for sure.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Hey, Now in the women's twelve k event, Corrine, it was,
- 4:15Speaker 1: wasn't it who had won that event?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, it's great that we'll have a new name
- 4:22Speaker 2: on the trophy. You know, her first time. She's been
- 4:27Speaker 2: doing some training down here at Arafira Stadium, so I'm
- 4:31Speaker 2: going to say it paid off.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, good honor. What a legend. And then we saw
- 4:35Speaker 1: in the four kilometer event a couple of juniors one
- 4:39Speaker 1: the men's and women.
- 4:40Speaker 2: And that's right. Can you believe that the two winners
- 4:44Speaker 2: of the four k are both under the age of fifteen?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I mean actually, I think all of the winners under
- 4:50Speaker 2: the were under the age of fifteen. Phenomenal. Look at
- 4:53Speaker 2: the talent that we're raising up here.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it is absolutely awesome. And I know I said
- 4:57Speaker 1: it earlier. Obviously the little girl was my daughter Bronte
- 5:00Speaker 1: and the young fella Gilbert Cox, absolutely smashing that full
- 5:04Speaker 1: kilometer time.
- 5:06Speaker 2: That's exactly right. Both members of the Darwin Athletics clubs
- 5:10Speaker 2: So and Yes, Bronchi are coached by Roger so clearly
- 5:17Speaker 2: some of the trainings pain it is.
- 5:19Speaker 1: It's wonderful, Leanne. It was such a great event. You know,
- 5:24Speaker 1: so many Territorians turning out to take part. You must
- 5:27Speaker 1: be pleased that that it went off and and and
- 5:31Speaker 1: went so well with that number of runners.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Absolutely, it did go extremely well. We did have a
- 5:39Speaker 2: couple of incidents where Saint John's were needed record. I
- 5:44Speaker 2: will certainly be following up with that today to ensure
- 5:47Speaker 2: that those two participants are safe and well. But you know, overall,
- 5:53Speaker 2: you know, it went off without a glitch. In saying
- 5:58Speaker 2: that we are having some issues with timing, we acknowledge that,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and we are following that, following that up today and
- 6:06Speaker 2: people who hadn't received a time are having that fix today. Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Right, as a few just a little bit didn't didn't
- 6:15Speaker 1: see their times come up or whatever.
- 6:17Speaker 2: That's correct. And we did notice that when people were
- 6:20Speaker 2: crossing the line, they either weren't wearing their bib on
- 6:24Speaker 2: the front on their front, some people had it sort
- 6:27Speaker 2: of rolled up and folded up in the pocket or
- 6:30Speaker 2: tucked into their pants. And if that chip on the
- 6:33Speaker 2: back of the bib is damaged in any way, it
- 6:36Speaker 2: becomes very hard for the reader those big rubber mats
- 6:40Speaker 2: that are on the ground to read it. So we're
- 6:43Speaker 2: trying to rectify that. If people have not received the time,
- 6:48Speaker 2: if they email us through or message us on Facebook,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and if they have a Strava time, we're happy to
- 6:55Speaker 2: input that into the system for them. All.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Good stuff, Willie, and good on you. Well done to yourself,
- 7:02Speaker 1: to the small team that you guys have working on
- 7:06Speaker 1: such a massive event, and all the volunteers and sponsors.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It was a great event. I'm getting messages coming through
- 7:11Speaker 1: people given a bit of a shout out to their
- 7:13Speaker 1: to their kids and others who had taken part, so
- 7:17Speaker 1: I'll read those messages out a little later on. But
- 7:20Speaker 1: thank you so much, Leanne for having a chat with
- 7:22Speaker 1: us this morning.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Thank you, Katie. And as you said, I couldn't do
- 7:26Speaker 2: this event without all of the volunteers, the people on
- 7:30Speaker 2: the water station, the people at race pack pickup this.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You know, I'm a one, one person show, so I
- 7:38Speaker 2: really appreciate every single person that helped us out over
- 7:41Speaker 2: the weekend.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah, good stuff, Lenne, Thanks so much for your time.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Thanks Katie, have a great day. Make sure your I
- 7:48Speaker 2: spark get those muscles.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I don't know, and I'm also struggling to not get sick.
- 7:54Speaker 1: So let's see how it all ends up. Leanne, I
- 7:57Speaker 1: could fall in a heap. Good luck that.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Thank you,
