- 0:00New podcast. We do have a single camera
- 0:03podcast. Those watching on YouTube or
- 0:05Spotify. Let's start there.
- 0:07Subscribe to the YouTube for the Bo Disciples podcast, 5 stars,
- 0:11Apple and Spotify and we're back.
- 0:13We're rolling. It has been it's been a while
- 0:17since the last pod. Our last podcast was on location
- 0:23in Redding with Bella and Leanne, which was what was that
- 0:27three weeks ago now? I think so.
- 0:31I think so. That was the first week in a May
- 0:33and we're almost at the end. So it's been almost a month,
- 0:35more than three weeks. So Paul would apologize for
- 0:38that. The podcast, we have been
- 0:41missing a few podcasts, but things have been busy.
- 0:45We've been doing a lot product, productive and fun archery
- 0:50things. Why don't you go ahead and
- 0:54start? We could start with reading.
- 0:56We never really got to talk about it after the event.
- 0:59What did you think of the events?
- 1:02That's helpful. Well, I knew you would just
- 1:05keep. I would.
- 1:05It would be so annoying so I had.
- 1:07To but it would bother me. I thought we'd flip the chair so
- 1:10that wouldn't happen. Would you like to flip them?
- 1:13No, we're already rolling reading.
- 1:17What did I think of it? I think it's great.
- 1:19I think it's the target Archers tack is what I would call
- 1:23reading. I think the reason, though maybe
- 1:30unsaid, the unsaid reason why people love reading so much is
- 1:39that it very much so resembles attack with a vendor village
- 1:44kind of area. And it's outdoor.
- 1:48There's a bar on site too I think you said.
- 1:53There is. I rimarily hit the one but there
- 1:55was 2. I don't know where the second
- 1:57one was. I did hit both.
- 1:59I did hit both. I ended up hitting the one more
- 2:02because it was closer to the vendor area.
- 2:04Yeah, I don't know where the other one.
- 2:07I did get one beverage that had a hole in it though.
- 2:10Oh my. And that that was the one I had
- 2:12when we were doing the pod in Redding.
- 2:14Oh yeah, Which? Is one of our highest listen to
- 2:16episodes. People seem to enjoy it, so
- 2:19that's cool. Yeah.
- 2:20So I think, I think that's why it's just that it's packed with
- 2:23people, very similar to Vegas with the vendor village packed
- 2:27with people. It's kind of like, you know, if
- 2:30you went to a convention but for archery and it's outdoors.
- 2:37So it just feels a bit more on the fun side than like the
- 2:42competition side, even though it is you have the shoot the day
- 2:46before, the blind shoot that you can pay to do.
- 2:50That's really just for fun. Blind Shoot was fun and it's a
- 2:53great warm up. Yeah.
- 2:56And then or you could pay less and you could go over to that
- 2:59other portion that also you could shoot for fun, but you're
- 3:03not entering it doesn't cost as much.
- 3:06So you're not entering for the blind shoot.
- 3:08So there is fun shoots as well as competition, but you can
- 3:16shoot it regardless of if you want a place like you're not a
- 3:20pro. So like you have so many, it's
- 3:25like doesn't feel as segregated, I guess, as Vegas does because
- 3:30Vegas separates the pros in a specific room from like the
- 3:34flight of people, though you may not be on the same bail because
- 3:39you're just all out in the open, like one bail ahead of you could
- 3:41be all the pert like a group of pros and then a group of people
- 3:45just shooting for fun, but signed up, you know, amateur
- 3:48class or whatever it's called in the next bales, you know, so
- 3:53it's it seems much more mixed and then it we our group had
- 3:58pros in it like we were on a pro bail.
- 4:04So yeah, I think it's just the, it's the target shooters tack of
- 4:11the year. I think that's a good.
- 4:12I think that's a a good description.
- 4:16Because think about other, think about other outdoor competition
- 4:20related shoots. You've got the Asas and you've
- 4:24got like outdoor Olympic stuff, like metered shoots, shooting
- 4:30out a single Bale. Flat, ground flat.
- 4:33Ground in the open, the train looks same.
- 4:35We don't move. ASA.
- 4:37Sure, you move from target to target, but primarily you're
- 4:40going to look down a lane that's about 10 feet or 10 yards wide,
- 4:45goes straight to the target. Yeah, Target standing there in
- 4:48the wide open and you just, there's nothing before it.
- 4:52Like you just come, you shoot, shoot, shoot, and then the
- 4:55shoots done. So Redding's just not like that.
- 5:03No, no. It was a good mix of terrain.
- 5:06There's sections that are, you know, pretty steep up, down side
- 5:11hill. The hike is not like a tack
- 5:14hike. It's not that tough, but
- 5:16nonetheless tougher than ASA or things like that.
- 5:19I haven't been, but from what I've seen content wise, so I
- 5:23agree, I think the vibe was great.
- 5:24I mean everyday people were buying me pops and I was
- 5:27cracking cold ones and shit and it was so much fun.
- 5:31I loved it. I loved it.
- 5:34But I do apologize for the lack of podcasts, but it's been,
- 5:38we've just been in a whirlwind since reading and it's no
- 5:42excuse. We could have.
- 5:43We could have made a couple happen.
- 5:45We just did. For sure.
- 5:46But however, it's kind of like in lieu of doing ours, we popped
- 5:50on, you know, you know, Josh and Brandon's twice.
- 5:54So while we were gone and couldn't get one out, you know,
- 5:58you could go over to their channel and watch, you know, the
- 6:01one where we talked about Vegas before we left for oh, that's a
- 6:05great home attack. That's actually a really good
- 6:07pod. If you guys haven't heard it and
- 6:08want a real deep dive into Vegas, head over to Brandon
- 6:11McDonald's channel on YouTube and check out that podcast.
- 6:14It's really good. And then, yeah, I mean, like I
- 6:19said, there's no excuse. We could have got a couple out,
- 6:21but we just didn't. The channel, the main channel
- 6:23always is our first priority and and then the podcast.
- 6:27Is still a love project. It's a love project, but we have
- 6:29done a good job this year of doing a lot more.
- 6:31Got to give us credit there, but with the event this year, we
- 6:35didn't even film at the MO Disciples Challenge at all.
- 6:38We did do some photos, we did some phone stuff, but as far as
- 6:41like a full length YouTube video, we didn't do any.
- 6:43But what is really cool is there was a whole lot of other
- 6:48creators there filming and I think that after reading, we
- 6:52didn't have anything until the BD challenge.
- 6:55And the challenge, you know, was last weekend.
- 7:01So pretty recent to now and it was 3 days this year, our first
- 7:07year doing an expanded format of three days.
- 7:09We also shifted to four courses of 15 targets versus 3 of 20 and
- 7:13A10 target kids course, which I think was a home run.
- 7:18I heard a lot of people say that 15 targets was like a perfect
- 7:24length of a course. And that's what I've always
- 7:25said. And we've always said like at
- 7:28TAC, which we're heavily inspired by, obviously, and, and
- 7:31a lot of our stuff is sort of based on the model they've built
- 7:37even there, like, you know, we talk often about, you know, it'd
- 7:42be nice to do the RMEF course or something that are
- 7:44traditionally, as Josh would say, traditionally 15 targets.
- 7:48You know what I mean? 20 can get pretty long.
- 7:50Like I think the sweet spot is 15 to 20 and then over 20 starts
- 7:56to get a bit long. Now it's different if you're
- 7:59shooting just a regular tournament where you're not
- 8:01walking very far between shots and it has more to do with the
- 8:05actual shooting than the hiking. Like for example, where we were
- 8:08last weekend in a Ronco, that's different because you're
- 8:11literally just shooting. It's not like a hike.
- 8:14This is a hike. It's physical event.
- 8:16And I think that the format was nailed. 3 days I thought went
- 8:20really smooth. We did have a couple of hurdles
- 8:23as anytime you put on an event you're going to have, for
- 8:27example, our food vendor that's been there three years in a row
- 8:30or no two years in a row had to bail last minute.
- 8:34His truck couldn't make it and he had to bail, which left us
- 8:37scrambling like we have too many people to not have a food
- 8:40vendor. Thankfully we had Brooks Coffee.
- 8:42She does have some food, but she's mostly a coffee, you know,
- 8:45business. And thankfully we had Outlaw BBQ
- 8:48come in clutch and come for a couple days as well as Brooke
- 8:51made some food as well. And it just went I think so
- 8:56smooth. And we added a party this year
- 8:58up the road at Josie's Hideout. Shout out to Rocky for helping
- 9:02us that, but I thought that was killer.
- 9:05I don't know about you, but I think it was our our smoothest 1
- 9:08yet. I mean, I think BD 3 was also
- 9:10exceptionally smooth, but I feel like this might have been aside
- 9:16from one sprained ankle, it was like perfect.
- 9:20Yeah, I think it was definitely one of the smoothest while also
- 9:25adding at least one more feature, IE the the party Friday
- 9:29night. And I think we can always
- 9:31expound on that even more, expand on that even more next
- 9:36year. I'd like to do some giveaways
- 9:38that don't happen post the shoot, you know, do them Friday
- 9:41night at the at the party. But yeah, for having equally,
- 9:49you know, the same amount of people there this year is last
- 9:52year it felt very smooth. We were able to get out on all
- 10:00the courses and everybody was able to do them once or multiple
- 10:05times. Never hearing of any backups on
- 10:09courses. Or safety issues.
- 10:11Yeah, or safety issues. The the other food guy come in
- 10:16clutch would love to expand on, you know, we kind of, but for,
- 10:20for logistics reasons you we would say, you know, we don't
- 10:25need to go in depth on it, but didn't do any sort of vendor
- 10:29village this year. And I think that's something
- 10:32that I think people just pay to look forward to.
- 10:37I've always said that they're important because it's a chance
- 10:41for people to come and see products that they don't get to
- 10:44see at their local shops. A lot of times, you know, even
- 10:48like, you know, maybe Kooyoo doesn't come, but for example, a
- 10:52hunting clothing brand, it's a lot of brands are direct to
- 10:58consumer now and are not in shops and their only chance to
- 11:02see and try on the clothes are at these events like TAC and
- 11:08conventions and things like that, Expo, Expo.
- 11:12And so when you're paying all that money to especially because
- 11:15this is 1 where you know, we get a significant amount of people
- 11:17that fly in. So flying in that cost you your
- 11:22flight, it cost you your rental car, it cost you your hotel or
- 11:26Airbnb or cabin or camping, you know, you want a little bit more
- 11:33for your buck because it's not just we keep our ticket costs
- 11:36low. And I think that's great.
- 11:38I don't think we need to nickel and dime people there.
- 11:42But there are other expenses than your ticket costs that, you
- 11:45know, you as a event host have to consider.
- 11:50And so it's a a thing of like, you know, what do you do for
- 11:56your event that brings more people while doesn't raise costs
- 11:59and you know, whatever. So that's something to bring
- 12:03back next year. But aside from that, like the
- 12:06food guy, phenomenal for coming in last minute.
- 12:10He'd done some of their states in the past.
- 12:12And he is like a born and raised cook, chef, whatever a male
- 12:17likes to be called while still being just you're like back home
- 12:21country hunting. He was great, you know, older
- 12:24gentleman, he. He was great and and the prices
- 12:27were pretty reasonable. Same with Brooks.
- 12:29I mean, but Brooke birthday great.
- 12:31I mean she's got a new baby. So you know she you know her she
- 12:36was a little all over the place, but she did really good.
- 12:38Her drinks were great and she has so many good options and the
- 12:42breakfast sandwiches they had over there too were great.
- 12:44The. I would tell Joey next year to
- 12:471000% just throw a giant sign out there that, you know, says
- 12:51breakfast sandwiches and when we're checking people in,
- 12:54letting them know they could go over there if they want to get a
- 12:56sandwich where they get the the the trails because it's just so
- 13:03good. But yeah, going back to your
- 13:04thing about because we changed the courses pretty significantly
- 13:07this year, I guess you would say compared to like your average,
- 13:10like you said, we try to pack as much in there in previous years
- 13:14for the amount of we have a lot of land, but compared to like
- 13:18tack having a whole, you know, ski resort worth of land, we
- 13:23don't have that much. And so I think going to 15
- 13:26targets was 20s, like the absolute Max, like I'll do 25 or
- 13:3128 because that's what people set.
- 13:33But like your attention span starts to get lost, you start to
- 13:36get tired. And especially an attack
- 13:38inspired type of event with those hikes and those longer
- 13:42trails in there, it's not target after target after target.
- 13:46You've got a lot of distance between target one to two and
- 13:49three, etcetera. And that's what I think makes
- 13:52these types of events. People love the hikes and
- 13:55getting to a new high point. When then you look down and
- 13:57you're exhausted, you're like, Oh my gosh, this is like a 35°
- 14:01angle downhill through trees in a hole at a Turkey, you know, or
- 14:06a mosquito in rocks. I still think Matt was too easy
- 14:10on that set. I never went and saw it
- 14:12afterwards. I never got to see it.
- 14:13I. Think he could have got a little
- 14:14hard next year, I'm gonna have to do it.
- 14:16But. But he said he didn't want to.
- 14:18He didn't want to badger people too much, but it was still good.
- 14:21I think that's what people love about these because you don't
- 14:23get to see that at your local fun shoots, you know?
- 14:27So 15 was a great call. The physical challenge is a big
- 14:30part of it in my mind. You know, it's called
- 14:32Motorcycles challenge, It's called Total Archery Challenge.
- 14:35Both of them are supposed to challenge you, you know, And I
- 14:40mean, I remember shooting tack in 2020 with a group of like
- 14:44Rick was there, for example, who won the range Finder this year
- 14:46at the shoot and and kind of his bunch at the time.
- 14:51And one of the women there had like she had been to TAC I think
- 14:57a prior year. It was just like she realized
- 15:00she was crazy out of shape. And then the next year she had
- 15:04trained all year, dropped a bunch of weight, got in good
- 15:06shape. She wanted to be able to hike
- 15:08the mountains better the next time around.
- 15:10That's dope to me, you know, so like if it can be a source of
- 15:13motivation or fitness or something like that while
- 15:16getting to shoot some some, you know, different, different
- 15:20difficulties of courses. That was another thing I think
- 15:22this year did better than maybe some of the the last couple was
- 15:26the easy course really was. I mean, it wasn't a cakewalk.
- 15:29It was harder than most tournament courses, but it was
- 15:31like it was pretty. It was simple enough to wear
- 15:33like if you're a beginner, you would you would do OK, and
- 15:37that's what we need. It's that was good.
- 15:39Next year, you know, I'm not going to talk about it too much
- 15:41until we get closer to it, but like, I really want to have some
- 15:46sort of like a version of like an extreme course.
- 15:48That's brutal. So next year that's a thing.
- 15:51And there's a couple tweaks, like I think the vendors for
- 15:53sure and, and some other things. But ultimately, I mean, you
- 15:57know, almost, almost an attendance record not quite just
- 16:02shy of last year by 17, yeah, 17 participants.
- 16:09So basically the same. We had three day pass this year
- 16:11which a lot of people bought. So very comparable to last year
- 16:15as far as turn out goes. Very excited, very blessed about
- 16:19that. And we promoted it a lot less.
- 16:21We kind of were waiting on some answers and we ultimately never
- 16:25really got them, but it worked out and the event went good.
- 16:28But I think we could have had a lot more.
- 16:32But I'm so happy with how it turned out and definitely a
- 16:36highlight of the year already, you know, one of the year end
- 16:39highlights for sure. Crazy that it's already been
- 16:42four years and. It's like barely easy to like
- 16:47hard. It's it's almost hard to
- 16:50remember the first one. Like the only bits of it I
- 16:54remember are just where we set up, like in the real practice
- 16:58range with the one loan check in tent and merch and merch.
- 17:02At that time it was both. Yeah, it was both.
- 17:05And that was it. There was nothing else.
- 17:08And the courses were literally called Course one, Course 2.
- 17:12And course 3. Yeah, and it was super raw, you
- 17:16know, I mean, it was so raw. It was really hot.
- 17:19We didn't have any signs. Are they like it was just like
- 17:22bare bones? Year 2 was a big facelift.
- 17:26I mean Year 2. Spent a lot of money increasing
- 17:28year one to two. Year 2 is probably the most
- 17:31expensive as far as like a cost because we've added a lot of
- 17:35production, but it was good. And then year three, we really
- 17:39change the game when we move the practice range.
- 17:41That was key. So year 3 was a big jump and
- 17:44then year 4 really just built on what year 3 was, but added a day
- 17:48and change the structure a little, which was better.
- 17:50Like that's I think the structure going forward.
- 17:53And now, now it's just about like adjusting on that
- 17:56structure, you know? I could really see an expansion
- 17:59to year five with, you know, a full, you know, Lord willing,
- 18:06full vendor village. We have so much space for it.
- 18:09And a full promotional run that's not feeling like choked
- 18:12down so. For sure.
- 18:14And that's just stuff on our end logistically that is preparation
- 18:19needed. And sometimes we can't help that
- 18:22because it's like you said, it's waiting on answers from others
- 18:29involved in order to get a go ahead and you just can't go
- 18:34without the the answer. So you.
- 18:35Can't force people to give you a reply in a timely fashion.
- 18:38I wish you could especially, you know, I, I'm, I'm a quick guy,
- 18:42so I liked it just. But, you know, yeah, not
- 18:44everyone's like that. But I think keeping the party
- 18:46for sure party days will not go away.
- 18:49No, three days standing on that party so that you know, there
- 18:52are some raffles and giveaways that take place at that at that
- 18:57party. Maybe we do add karaoke. close
- 18:59the range. Close the range down a little
- 19:01earlier each. Day so people can actually make
- 19:04it over tons of people did like way more than.
- 19:07Party was packed yeah Rocky, rocky was she was super stoked
- 19:11yeah on the turn out. So, you know, appreciate
- 19:13everyone who came to the event and and like I said, we you're
- 19:17not going to see content other than short form on our channels.
- 19:21However, if you want to watch and see what the events about,
- 19:24go to other people's channels. Just type in Bo disciples
- 19:27challenge and there is a lot of channels.
- 19:30Maybe 2026? Yeah, with good videos out
- 19:32there. So go check those out.
- 19:36And then, yeah, I mean, that went down.
- 19:38We rolled straight from that, so we had some unexpected.
- 19:41We've talked about it numerous Times Now, but some unexpected
- 19:45in recent past plan changes where we ended up canceling the
- 19:49long-awaited road trip because we lost out on some people who
- 19:54are going to Vermont Tack. So it just didn't make sense to
- 19:58go for just us for a smaller tax one we'd love to still do in the
- 20:02future. But so we cancelled that road
- 20:06trip. But then we filled the space
- 20:08right back up because Taylor, your buddy called was like, hey.
- 20:14You heard about this state Broadhead Championship and I was
- 20:18like, no, but do they give out buckles?
- 20:22Oh yeah. So what else do you do but jump
- 20:27straight from BDC 4 into prepping for a State Broadhead
- 20:31Championship? Well, I mean, hey, you, you had
- 20:34good practice at BDC 4 because you shot all four courses.
- 20:37I think you're the only one of the group to do that.
- 20:41Most of us shot three of the four.
- 20:43Unfortunately not victory for a lot of us, but.
- 20:46But I don't feel bad about it because I was the first year
- 20:48I've ever done it. Well, no, what I'm saying is it
- 20:50was good for your practice and and also shooting at the
- 20:53practice range. One thing that was cool was the
- 20:55way we had the check in set and the giveaway set was we were
- 20:58able to shoot the practice range of people.
- 21:00So we were getting to shoot the bows, which was neat.
- 21:03And like I said, shoot, you know, in most of our cases,
- 21:06three of the four courses, you knocked out all four, which I
- 21:08think is great. So yeah, you were well
- 21:11practiced. You know, I was going to give it
- 21:16a RIP too. We were able to actually make a
- 21:18video, which I'm proud of is like a 22 minute video.
- 21:20It's really good that we didn't know if that would happen.
- 21:23Had some cameras. We got a new camera and had some
- 21:25issues. But we, you know, you got it
- 21:27fixed for day 2 and then we didn't use it day 2.
- 21:29But but nonetheless, like it was, I felt like your
- 21:33preparation was good. It was decent.
- 21:37Mama's OK. I got more time behind the
- 21:39alliance and felt good. So, you know, we just went up
- 21:42there and gave it a RIP. And I don't know if you want to
- 21:44say the results or you want to wait till the video comes out
- 21:47Sunday. Yeah, I yeah, I mean, if I post
- 21:53the post on Instagram, the answer is already going to be
- 21:56out there. So are you going to?
- 21:57Do it. Are you going to actually post?
- 22:00And not everybody goes to all platforms.
- 22:02That's very true. You know, some people who use
- 22:05YouTube probably likely do not have Instagram and, you know,
- 22:09don't listen to podcasts or whatever.
- 22:10So yeah, I think the one the biggest thing that I learned
- 22:15from it is the preparation that you should take regardless.
- 22:20Couple things though, before you get into talking about the
- 22:22shoot, I want to just talk about the format so people understand
- 22:25it before you talk about it. So it was like she said, a broad
- 22:28head shoot. You could use mechanicals, so I
- 22:31thought about using a beast, but neither of us did.
- 22:33We use fixed blades and it is unmarked under 40 and under.
- 22:41Anything over 40 was marked yardage and it was 80 targets,
- 22:4640 each day, 40 Saturday, 40 Sunday.
- 22:51In the scoring was No 12, so it's 10850 and the classes are a
- 22:58little different, but basically we were both in what she was in
- 23:01hunter release female, which is movable sight, no lenses or
- 23:06anything but a movable sight and basically a modern bow hunter
- 23:09set up and that's also what I was in for the men so anyway go.
- 23:12Go ahead, stabilizers and back bars, things like that.
- 23:20The only requirement was that it'd be a camo or matte finished
- 23:25bow and have a quiver attached to the bow.
- 23:28In the modern bow hunter class they call the Hunter release
- 23:30class. And you couldn't be above 300
- 23:33and 300 feet a second with a 3% margin of error.
- 23:36So 309, I was pumping 297 and you were toast. 23737 on day
- 23:422237. I don't know what happened day
- 23:44one but. And they didn't check everyone's
- 23:46bows and broadens. Yeah, day one they check
- 23:49everybody's bows in broad me too if you're in flight 1 and day 2
- 23:52if you're in the top flighted group for your class.
- 23:57So that's that's the run on how it how it goes.
- 24:02And I will say it does make it tough like to make back points
- 24:08like you you were you were trying for day 2 when there are
- 24:12no twelfths. So like you just have to be on
- 24:16your game. Basically just hope that
- 24:19everybody else isn't on theirs or a mistake is made.
- 24:23And then you don't make a mistake because there's no way
- 24:26to gain back points once you lose them.
- 24:27You lose them, you're down and there's no coming back to Even.
- 24:31So I would say, what would you say probably 10% of the total
- 24:36shoot was marked or yeah, marked, maybe 5 to 8 targets.
- 24:43I can't remember a day. Yeah, yeah.
- 24:47I mean. There were less than 10 for
- 24:49sure, Mark. I would say that's and you.
- 24:52Shoot the same whatever was 5 to 10 marked targets both days.
- 24:59So those cones never changed yardages, they stayed the same,
- 25:06and then everything else was unmarked with a broad head.
- 25:11And if I learned anything, it is the acute amount of preparation
- 25:20that you should take or let me just let me change that to
- 25:23diligent amount of preparation you should take to tune in your
- 25:28broad heads, especially for hunting.
- 25:32Because a lot of times what I saw out there, and I made this
- 25:35change for today too, is they're coming in with the tiniest, I
- 25:42mean, within legal limits of how they're also you can't just pick
- 25:46like the absolute like most smallest practice broadhead
- 25:50thing, you know, known to mankind or that you custom made
- 25:54yourself. So it has to follow California
- 25:56Fish and Game regulations for broadhead.
- 25:59So the minimum size was like a 5/8 inch or something.
- 26:05Don't quote me on that, but I think that's what the rule said.
- 26:09And if yours looks small. He whipped out this little metal
- 26:12doughnut to check that he couldn't put it over the top of
- 26:15your broad head. And so you, you, there are
- 26:22things you likely wouldn't hunt with, maybe dependent on game
- 26:28and animal. But do you want to pause?
- 26:31I don't know. It sounded like our door.
- 26:33It sounded like a knock. I.
- 26:34Think it was just wind. Keep.
- 26:36It rolling, we had a sorry guys, we had a minor disturbance at
- 26:40our door, but we're good. It didn't sound like an ox so I
- 26:44was like, but you know, maybe get dependent on animal like you
- 26:48might use like something that small.
- 26:50I would probably use it on like a Bunny, but I wouldn't use it
- 26:53on much else. However, like day one, I rolled
- 26:57in with Magnus Stingers and though long and skinny, they
- 27:05they're pretty large. And the recommendation from
- 27:08everybody we talked to had shot it before was like, Neil, we're
- 27:13going to change these right now. So after day one, I changed
- 27:17broadheads for day 2, but it was just having a really rough time
- 27:21getting them to fly Gray out at distances.
- 27:24And by distance I mean like 50 to 55 yards.
- 27:28I don't mean like a 70 yard poke.
- 27:30There was nothing beyond 59 on the course.
- 27:32No, there was a 62 yarder. Yeah, 60.
- 27:35But that was Max. So I learned that I would like
- 27:40to be more diligent in my preparations for hunting season
- 27:45of just double checking that my broad heads fly true out to like
- 27:5060 because that's the Max I think I'd like to shoot from now
- 27:53on anyways. Ethically, morally, mentally for
- 27:57my complex. I mean, if you, you know, go
- 28:00back to some of our recent content, for example, when we
- 28:03went and shot with Greg Poole, basically you can correct me in
- 28:09the comments here if I'm wrong. But I believe what I'm going to
- 28:12say is correct that like when I was shooting the bare shaft and
- 28:15we're tuning in the bow to the bare shaft, tuning to a fixed
- 28:20blade broadhead is essentially the same thing.
- 28:23So like it may be opposite, but you're doing the same thing.
- 28:27You're shooting a field tip and getting it to where eventually
- 28:30they hit the same and then you theoretically go back to paper
- 28:34and both should shoot a bullet hole just like Greg said.
- 28:37So, you know, tuning, tuning has never been our strength.
- 28:43And I think, you know, to back up what you're saying, I think
- 28:48we're learning that especially if you're going to do like a
- 28:52state broadhead shoot or something like that where you're
- 28:54shooting friggin fixed blades. It's good to know how to really
- 28:59tune your stuff and dial it in. For example, you were at some
- 29:04points struggling hitting to the right on uphill targets.
- 29:08So today we went to and saw how do you shoot at very steep
- 29:12angles uphill? And you were?
- 29:1516 out to 36. And you were no longer hitting
- 29:18to the right, shooting uphill. But what was the difference?
- 29:20You were. Shooting with field tips, right?
- 29:23So had you put a broad head on, it would have been interesting
- 29:26to see if it was over to the right.
- 29:28So I think that like you said, doing more stuff like this, all
- 29:34it does is make your game and you as an Archer and an
- 29:38individual and even a bow technician better than if you
- 29:43just stick in one box. Well, and we everybody knows how
- 29:49much archery is so much a mental game.
- 29:54So if you can improve your confidence strictly by just
- 29:59doing, I'm not saying it's like something you need to.
- 30:01I heard from some people who are out there like shooting dozens
- 30:05of arrows and then dialing those back to like 12.
- 30:08And then yeah, I believe knock tuning is great and whatnot.
- 30:11But like they would spend weeks and weeks and weeks to prepare
- 30:15to have like 6 arrows. But I just slapped, I just
- 30:19slapped Dick together, 5 broad heads and five HLRS and just let
- 30:24her. And, you know, I'm not saying
- 30:29maybe I'm going to go to that level, but like to ensure that I
- 30:32know that like the arrows that I bring with me and the broadheads
- 30:36that I bring with me have a tune properly set to fly them
- 30:40straight out to 60. That's what I I want to ensure
- 30:46for home season. And so that's what I learned the
- 30:48most out of this because that's what I care about the most.
- 30:53You know, though, I would love to win Buckle.
- 30:58They're just good to do these types of tournaments so that if
- 31:01you do care most about, you know, hunting and, and your
- 31:04shots and placement and whatnot, that you learn those things from
- 31:07suits like. Thinking and competing is going
- 31:10to make you better. It's just.
- 31:11It is just. More reps down the bow.
- 31:13Yeah, I love competing and you know, I I think you do as well,
- 31:20which it was cool that after you filming me do so many events
- 31:25this year. I mean you filmed me do 5
- 31:26events, 3 shoots in Arizona, one in Vegas, one in Reading, and
- 31:31then, you know, to actually get to be a competitor this time was
- 31:35pretty cool. And you know, we were under the
- 31:37impression that we were going to shoot together none of neither
- 31:41day. It turned out that the first day
- 31:43they let you shoot with whoever and then the second day was
- 31:46flighted. So that was kind of cool.
- 31:47So we got to shoot together and I got to watch him.
- 31:50Now, however, if you choose to do this tournament next year, if
- 31:53you're listening and decide, oh, let me go try it, that is not
- 31:56always the case and that's not typically how it works.
- 31:59So typically you are flighted even on day one with say there's
- 32:0410 people in your class, you're just flighted with a random 4 or
- 32:07so of them. However, they did not flight at
- 32:10all day one. So you like a male was able to
- 32:14shoot with a female because the flights were not set.
- 32:18So and then day 2, they then flighted us based on our ranking
- 32:22within our class. But yeah, so going back to it,
- 32:28that's what I learned the most out of it.
- 32:31I have never shot an unmarked tournament in my life, never
- 32:36shot an unmarked fun course in my life up until last weekend
- 32:39because I decided I wanted to do this tournament.
- 32:43I shot the victory course unmarked, but I still checked
- 32:48ranges before I shot each time to see how my guess was, which
- 32:55is great. I think you should practice
- 32:56doing that. However, there's a different
- 32:58element of anxiety that is added when you don't have a range
- 33:03Finder and you have to check or you you can't check.
- 33:06You just have to be confident in your guess, your educated guess
- 33:11and shoot the arrow and hope it was good.
- 33:16And there's a lot that goes into that like mental game of, you
- 33:21know, where you landed and then you start comparing the past
- 33:24shots to the next target and you know, ways to try to figure out
- 33:30the yardage. And you know, it's just a whole
- 33:36mental addition to archery tissue unmarked.
- 33:42And so day one officially now I know the door was not shut.
- 33:50So day one shot all unmarked. Our group was fantastic because
- 33:55nobody was discussing ranges like you should, not like 0.
- 34:00And I thought that was fantastic because.
- 34:01My group didn't day 2 either. Not at all.
- 34:04We didn't either on day 2, but I think that's always helpful
- 34:08because like, you don't accidentally hear somebody like
- 34:11whispering anything to a friend or something like that.
- 34:15And my guesses were I was doing great, you were, and came out
- 34:22day one feeling very confident in my score.
- 34:26If I doubled it for day two, it was very comparable to previous
- 34:30year's top scores. And turns out there was only one
- 34:39other lady in my class which I would have loved to shoot
- 34:43against more. I just, I think that would be
- 34:45more fun, more competitive and whatnot.
- 34:50And but there were some really, really great shooters in the bow
- 34:55hunter class as well for females.
- 34:58And so that's what I was comparing my scores to last year
- 35:01and felt good. Had a very stiff lead going into
- 35:11day two. It was 18 points and then day 2
- 35:16game and I had paper tuned my bow the night before, changed my
- 35:21broad heads was shooting great. A shout out to 55 yards and was
- 35:26a little still a little right and but on flat ground and I was
- 35:35doing good. The 1st 14 targets.
- 35:37I knew where we were because you shoot the same and the way it
- 35:42works, you shoot the same course again.
- 35:45Don't fall asleep. I'm not for all the people not
- 35:48watching but listening. Chase's eyes just fluttered a
- 35:51little. I will be honest, I am.
- 35:54I am tired, boss. I'm worn out.
- 35:58I've been worn out the I've been worn out, boss.
- 36:01Nobody has it harder than me. OK, anyways, moving on.
- 36:07But they moved the cones overnight.
- 36:09So yeah, and that was, I felt like that was tricky.
- 36:12It was tricky because some of them just moved left or right
- 36:16and then some of them did move forward and back.
- 36:19And so you're trying to like remember what yesterday's
- 36:23yardage for a target was when you shoot 40 targets.
- 36:26So it's like, I don't remember what this bear was yesterday,
- 36:30like 30 something ish maybe, I don't know.
- 36:33And then you're trying to think about like, does this look
- 36:35closer or further and that you should just not do throw that
- 36:38out the window and just re go with your plan that you did on
- 36:43day one on day 2. And that where that like really
- 36:47started mentally messing me up. So you shoot like the way the
- 36:51paper breaks down. You like shoot 14 as you're
- 36:54scoring and then it moves to the next line and you score you you
- 36:57restart score 14 just to help yourself add.
- 37:00But so we shot 14 targets on day 2 and I re added my score and I
- 37:05was like I am up 35 points over the the other female in my
- 37:13class. Just take that wad it up and
- 37:17throw it right in the trash can because by the end of the next
- 37:2114 it was like within 14 points. It was not good and I started to
- 37:29pucker my BHA little bit. Because.
- 37:34I might throw this win that I had by a long shot right in the
- 37:40garbage, but when you think about it, you have to remember
- 37:43that's really not though. That does seem like an
- 37:46astounding amount of points. 35 point lead in an unmarked shoot
- 37:51with no twelves. That could be 3 zeros or 6
- 37:56fives. And guess what I had in a row?
- 37:596 fives and she was just shooting great for you know that
- 38:04part and so the first fourteen I went 100 and she went 84 and so
- 38:10that gave me 14 more points bumped my my lead and the second
- 38:16one I shot 84 and she shot a one O 6.
- 38:21So she actually performed better than I did in the 1st 14.
- 38:25And then the second one, I just had to like try to mentally put
- 38:29myself back in it and just target for target.
- 38:35And we kind of went back and forth and I'd get A5, she'd get
- 38:40a 10, I'd get A10, she'd get a 5.
- 38:42We both shoot fives, we both shoot eights like, and I just
- 38:47kind of like held it off. I gave her a couple more points.
- 38:50She's still finished higher than me on the last.
- 38:53I think it's 10, but ultimately it was not enough points to
- 39:00secure the win and so from a 35 point high lead I dropped it
- 39:05down. Luckily I'd gapped it out that
- 39:07far because I dropped it down to an 11 point lead and that's what
- 39:11I won with. So I did come home with my
- 39:13buckle, but I am not happy with my shooting on day 2.
- 39:18So that's just it goes to show like I if I did something like
- 39:21that again, I would want to put more effort.
- 39:22Wasn't the unmarked though. I need more mental practice with
- 39:26that. That does get in your head,
- 39:30feeling confident in your setup with something so new.
- 39:34I'd never shot a broadhead shoot before.
- 39:37Ensuring like that every single one flies straight is very
- 39:45important and there's work to be done if I were to do something
- 39:49like it again next year. But yeah, I'm just happy I
- 39:54managed to get away with the buckle and it came home with me.
- 39:58I'm waiting on my belt to show up today from Amazon so I can
- 40:02put it on my belt to bring the tack with me.
- 40:04But you also shot this tournament.
- 40:08Would you like to discuss your part at all?
- 40:11Well, I would like to discuss how nice your buckle is and I
- 40:15think it's pretty neat that. It's my favorite.
- 40:18You set out, you know, you you said you wanted to try to win a
- 40:22buckle and you went out and and did it with a good good sized
- 40:26win, which is really cool. That was awesome.
- 40:28I thought you shot really well the day we shot together.
- 40:31I was very impressed. And you know, we do have a
- 40:34couple more competitions coming up.
- 40:36We got this new one and Del Mar at the Del at the Fairgrounds,
- 40:41which I'm excited. First of all, I want to give a
- 40:44San Diego Archer some credit. I'm excited.
- 40:46They're doing something different.
- 40:48They're bringing archery to us somewhere with a crowd, which is
- 40:51pretty cool. There's going to be 3D targets
- 40:53and Olympic targets and we're both competing in both.
- 40:58It's a hybrid event, which I think is bitchin.
- 41:02It'll get a lot of new eyes on archery.
- 41:04I do want my jersey for that and I want my jersey for Big Bear.
- 41:09So we need to get on that like today.
- 41:13But I'm excited for that. I'm excited for more
- 41:15competitions and I'm excited you got your buckle and and want
- 41:18want more. You want to do better.
- 41:20As far as how I did came in there, still not a ton of time
- 41:25behind the Alliance, but I did shoot amazing at BDC.
- 41:28I felt really good at BDC. So I was like, OK, you know, put
- 41:32a broad head on and got it flying good enough.
- 41:35You know, I had Greg Poole talk me through a little bit of like
- 41:38tuning and it was hitting good. So I started shooting and and I
- 41:42knew that Travis Scott, the guy from Deadhead Archery was there
- 41:46and he's very good. You know, like he's shoots pro
- 41:50in Vegas and shoots pro and, you know, all the big tournaments.
- 41:53And I mean, he's like a 30X shooter indoor, you know, 330 X,
- 41:56like he's very good. So I knew it was likely going to
- 42:00be me and him at the top and, you know, started shooting and
- 42:06felt really good. You know, day one, I was just
- 42:08pounding 10s pretty much exclusively almost.
- 42:12And then I made one mental error, which I never make.
- 42:16I don't make mistakes like this. But there was a target that was
- 42:20a marked one and it was marked for 49, I believe.
- 42:25And for some reason I watched the video when I edited it, I
- 42:28step up and I go, oh, we got to mark target 49.
- 42:30You see me dial it, but for some reason my head stopped it at 40.
- 42:34So I put the mark at 40 shot and I was like, oh, that's perfect.
- 42:38It's going to be right in the middle.
- 42:39And I just watch it go like way low.
- 42:42And I got so lucky to hit his leg.
- 42:44So I got a 5. I'd just love to know what
- 42:47mental error happened in your brain.
- 42:50It wasn't like you didn't dial. No, I I guarantee it's because
- 42:54in the in the video I say like anything over 40 is marked.
- 42:57And when I said the word 40I guarantee my mind just put it on
- 43:0040. So anyway, I got lucky and got
- 43:03A5 so I was like, OK, I can't, I can't mess around too much more.
- 43:08That's not good. So then I pounded a whole lot of
- 43:1010s. I was really happy with my
- 43:12shooting. I did shoot one more five.
- 43:14I was holding on long targets. I was holding the left side of
- 43:17the 10, sometimes even further. And there's one particular
- 43:21target I think was in the mid low 50s maybe.
- 43:23So I was holding all the way. Like it was a narrow tall set of
- 43:28rings like this. So they weren't wide, they were
- 43:30tall. So I was actually holding like
- 43:32just outside the eight line waiting for the drift in the
- 43:36either the eight or the 10. And I didn't want to miss on the
- 43:38right, so I shot and I've it hit exactly where the pin was in the
- 43:42five on the roof. So I shot 2 fives that day out
- 43:45of 40 handful with handful of eights maybe.
- 43:49And Travis ended up having 12 points on me that day.
- 43:54And I'm like, OK, in my head I'm like, it should only be 7, but
- 43:58it's 12. So I got to make up 12.
- 44:01So the next day Travis and I are of course flighted together in
- 44:03the top flight and we start shooting and very first target I
- 44:06shoot A5. Not a hard target I had the
- 44:08range right I just for some reason hit left and it was it
- 44:11was in it was unforgiving on the left right.
- 44:13So I5 it, then I rail off a few 10's and then Travis shoots A5
- 44:18and I shoot either A10 or an 8. I can't remember, but it was the
- 44:24same goat that I had shot in the leg the day before and five.
- 44:27So I'm like OK, well we should be pretty even now on the day.
- 44:32So we shoot and like you said, first fourteen, we tally it up.
- 44:35Travis got me by two. So I'm like we're just right
- 44:38there. We shoot through the 2nd 14.
- 44:41Felt like we're just matching 10s.
- 44:43Same thing, he's up by two. We shoot the last 12 and I get
- 44:49him by two, so in 40 targets on the second day we were two
- 44:54points apart. So he ended up winning by 14.
- 44:57But it wasn't because I shot poorly.
- 45:00It was just like he we both shot really good and I couldn't make
- 45:04it up. I was just like.
- 45:05Yeah, it was session with No 12. And I would have lost.
- 45:08I would have lost either way, because even if I didn't make
- 45:10that dumb mental error on the sheep, I still would have been
- 45:13down 9. So it's like it dumb man.
- 45:15Even if that sheep and the five the more the morning of day 2,
- 45:20that's 10 points you still would have been down. 44 Yeah, I still
- 45:23would I still would have lost so Travis was just he was just
- 45:27better this weekend and I'm not bummed he's good competition and
- 45:30I love shooting with good shooters.
- 45:31So shout out to him check out his channel deadhead archery.
- 45:36Like I said, he's he's super impressive and it was a lot of
- 45:38fun to finally shoot together because you know we're from a
- 45:40similar area and have never actually got to shoot in a group
- 45:44or compete. So it was really fun and keep it
- 45:46tight was was pretty cool so. But it's something to be said
- 45:50also because we, you know, had a nod a little unlike my drop off
- 45:55in score from day one to day 2. And the lady that I was shooting
- 45:59with said it at the end, you know, she said Congrats or
- 46:01whatever. And it was fun, you know,
- 46:04getting to shoot with someone my age for once.
- 46:07So she must shoot with like a lot of kids in one of her kids,
- 46:10those kids she was with. And so it's interesting because
- 46:17you, the the buddy we're going to Hawaii with, had made that
- 46:21one statement about like, you know, you shoot and kind of hunt
- 46:25with how the people you choose to shoot and hunt with.
- 46:29Oh, yeah, yeah. I don't exactly remember how he
- 46:32said it, but you know, that's about it to that effect.
- 46:35And it was interesting because I noticed if at the end of the 14
- 46:41where I was up 35 and then my sudden significant drop off in
- 46:44score, I can remember the exact target.
- 46:47And it was when, because there were only two of us in our
- 46:51class, we had two kids that were not hers, but they were from her
- 46:57archery range. So like, she shoots with them a
- 46:59lot. She knows their parents.
- 47:01And I think they were the only two boys in their youth class.
- 47:06No, there's three of them, I think maybe, but so they got
- 47:12paired with us and, you know, they're kids, they're teenagers
- 47:18and you know, they're very good for their age.
- 47:22But obviously, like, still like not outmatching, you know, my
- 47:26score or her score. And it's so interesting how,
- 47:34again, it's a mental game and kids being kids when they mess
- 47:39up, like because they love archery, like they get so much
- 47:44more mad, which some adults do too.
- 47:47I used to be like that. And at one point I thought he
- 47:50was going to throw his bow. He was mad and he'd storm off
- 47:54and walk to the next target. And that was at the point that
- 47:59it was walking around that corner to that buck dough or the
- 48:02bedded buck. And the dough was at about 30
- 48:04something. Target.
- 48:04Yeah, I did 10 at both days, but that was a tough target.
- 48:08I did 10 to day one, I think 5 did day 2.
- 48:13And that was the immediate start of the next 14 targets because I
- 48:16stopped concentrating on myself and I started walking this kid
- 48:21through slowing down through a shot process, really thinking
- 48:24about his his chosen score because he's also gapping pins.
- 48:28Like kudos to him on his score just for gapping pins for a bow
- 48:32that doesn't even go out to 60 lbs or to 60 yards.
- 48:36And like he was just starting to rush and it was showing in his
- 48:41score and he was so badly wanting to compete and make up
- 48:44points on this kid he was shooting with.
- 48:47But the other kid was just dialed mentally.
- 48:50I mean he was calm as calm could be.
- 48:53Like nothing bothered him even if he shot a poor score or or
- 48:58target didn't faze him and you could see it in his shooting and
- 49:03the other kid would get frustrated and go on a streak of
- 49:06like 55500. But then when he would slow down
- 49:14he would outshoot that kid every time, every single one.
- 49:17So like overall, he was like mostly outpacing the kid, but
- 49:27then it would have a poor streak.
- 49:28And so he ended up only being after I started helping him.
- 49:36He was he finished the day down one from the other.
- 49:43Wow. But the day before he was down
- 49:4710. So we ultimately ended up down
- 49:4911 from the kid he was competing with.
- 49:52But it says something about like when you're shooting with people
- 49:56who don't shoot quite at your level, like you may not like put
- 50:00in as much mental effort. And then on top of that, you're
- 50:03distracted by like it was great to see him start to shoot better
- 50:07and all of a sudden was out shooting this kid and ended up
- 50:11only being down one and ended the last target with A10 and
- 50:20outshot everybody else. But had he done that the whole
- 50:24time? It was like, just goes to show
- 50:27how much like you mentally can't check out like that or get
- 50:30frustrated like that, but it also mentally shows how it
- 50:33affects the person trying to help the other person.
- 50:36Because you're not focused on your shooting.
- 50:38You're taking less time to focus on your yardage gas and less
- 50:42time in your draw cycle and and whatnot because you're you know,
- 50:46you're trying to get your shot off and go help him again at the
- 50:48next target, which I was happy to do.
- 50:51It was fun to see like right after that target was those two
- 50:55span of less than 20 yard TPL, you know, whatever targets and
- 51:00that. Reason and a Beaver.
- 51:01Yep, it was a Beaver and a goat the next day.
- 51:04I shot the Beaver. I tend it.
- 51:06I shot the Beaver as well. Did not.
- 51:11So I'm standing here is me. Here's the kid and I'm like
- 51:13slow, slow down. You know, you obviously know
- 51:17what the ardage is. So the only thing to prevent you
- 51:21from getting a 10 here is how quickly you get this shot off.
- 51:25He shoots the Beaver, tends it. I I look at this Beaver, I'm
- 51:31like, I see the line. It was very fresh.
- 51:33Yeah, it was, it was very, but there was 1 little cuft you
- 51:37could see in the white. Yeah, it was.
- 51:38Crisp, nice. It was a nice crisp brown
- 51:43Beaver. Thing was fresh.
- 51:47It was a fresh Beaver, Very clean, fresh, new unused Beaver.
- 51:54Had a nice color to it. Yeah, with a little strip too.
- 51:59Yeah, well, I saw it. Of color.
- 52:00I saw it. Yeah.
- 52:02So I tried to hold off that little tuft in the strip and
- 52:07yeah, fived it 5 to like 8 yard Beaver.
- 52:12And so that was where I was like oh boy.
- 52:15So then I went from that. I've fived a lot of Beavers in
- 52:17my day. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:21And then I zeroed right after that on that Jaguar.
- 52:23He's on the peak. Wasn't that one marked?
- 52:26Yes. How'd you 0 A marked?
- 52:29One and uphill, it was one of those sitting like upright,
- 52:34Yeah. And so uphill 50, I think it was
- 52:3950, I can't remember. It was over 50 and just uphill
- 52:44far with a broad head and I shot straight right where that leg
- 52:50comes down underneath it hit the rubber and of the target, you
- 52:54know, behind it, the bail. Oh you were shooting a new arrow
- 52:59too? HLRHL R500 Spine Boutique wrap
