Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / SPECIAL EPISODE: The State of the Banana Fish Dub
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person, Michelle, and I'm just popping back
- 0:04Speaker 1: in between you know, the shows that I do when
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm off to tell you about something. So basically, I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: just gonna do this thing where I like lead into
- 0:18Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, which is really stupid because you'll
- 0:20Speaker 1: know from the title of the episode what this is about.
- 0:23Speaker 1: But who cares. I was thinking about doing this, so
- 0:25Speaker 1: I want to do it, so I'm gonna do it.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So anyway, I bet you don't know why I'm not
- 0:30Speaker 1: into dumbs and that makes sense because I haven't told you.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I mean, I might have said, like, well, it's not
- 0:37Speaker 1: the original you know, dialogue format language that the director
- 0:43Speaker 1: and everybody who worked on the anime wanted, so it's
- 0:46Speaker 1: not ever going to completely get it right as to
- 0:50Speaker 1: whatever the vision was. And that is absolutely true in
- 0:54Speaker 1: my opinion. However, there's another reason that is insane. So
- 0:58Speaker 1: I wanted to tell you that because why the fuck not.
- 1:03Speaker 1: So when I read, you know, like manga and shit,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and I think this is most people or a lot
- 1:08Speaker 1: of people, and also books, but I don't read a
- 1:11Speaker 1: lot of like straight prose books. So when I read manga,
- 1:14Speaker 1: like most of the time, especially if I'm really enjoying it,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I can hear like the characters' voices in my head.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So I have very specific ways that my brain tells
- 1:23Speaker 1: me that the characters speak. And even you know, after
- 1:27Speaker 1: I watch an anime, when I think about the anime,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I kind of think about it in those voices because
- 1:33Speaker 1: I can't really think about it in Japanese because I
- 1:36Speaker 1: don't know enough Japanese. In my like, it wouldn't work.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And I don't do that on purpose, it just kind
- 1:41Speaker 1: of happens. So the issue with Dubbs is that, like,
- 1:45Speaker 1: I'm really bad with faces and names, but I remember
- 1:48Speaker 1: voices really well, and once it's in there, it's just
- 1:53Speaker 1: in there. And I am terrified that when I hear
- 1:58Speaker 1: a voice of a character that I really like dubbed,
- 2:01Speaker 1: it's going to replace the voice that is already in
- 2:05Speaker 1: my head for them. And I think that that's probably insane,
- 2:10Speaker 1: but I really don't want that. But that is not
- 2:14Speaker 1: the point of what I'm saying. So there's this episode
- 2:17Speaker 1: of Futurama where Leela and Fry have like robot clones
- 2:22Speaker 1: of themselves because there was this accident and they thought
- 2:25Speaker 1: that they died, but they didn't die and for a while,
- 2:27Speaker 1: like the clones didn't know that they were clones. I mean,
- 2:30Speaker 1: their robots are not actually clones, but they find out
- 2:32Speaker 1: at the end that they are robots because real Leela
- 2:36Speaker 1: and Fry like come back and basically the end of
- 2:40Speaker 1: it is like they go off and live together as
- 2:43Speaker 1: just robots, and Leela is like, and the truth is
- 2:46Speaker 1: I love Fry that Fry and she's talking about the
- 2:48Speaker 1: robot and then Fry says, and I love Leela any Leila.
- 2:53Speaker 1: That is how I fel. That is how I feel
- 2:57Speaker 1: about ash Links from Banana Fish. Yeah, I just said that,
- 3:02Speaker 1: So it doesn't even fucking matter who voices him. Apparently,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I still think he's really cool. So what I'm trying
- 3:09Speaker 1: to say is I watched the first episode of the
- 3:11Speaker 1: dub of Banana Fish, and I was surprised by how bad.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I didn't think it was. Do I think it's great, No,
- 3:21Speaker 1: But I thought I was gonna like need to cringe
- 3:26Speaker 1: all the way through and like just fight through it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And I have reason why I would believe that because
- 3:33Speaker 1: my second favorite anime, and you might not know this
- 3:35Speaker 1: because has been a long time since I talked about it,
- 3:37Speaker 1: is mob Psycle one hundred, which I've only watched subtitled,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and at one point I was watching it with my
- 3:44Speaker 1: mom and she said, Hey, what does the dub sound like?
- 3:47Speaker 1: So we decided just to like briefly watch the first
- 3:50Speaker 1: episode dubbed, and it like destroyed my confidence in the world.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I hated it. And normally when I I really really
- 4:00Speaker 1: like something, like, I just said, like, I want my
- 4:04Speaker 1: vision of what it is in my head and I
- 4:06Speaker 1: don't want that changed. So I did not expect to
- 4:10Speaker 1: go into the Banana Fish dub thinking anything other than wow,
- 4:14Speaker 1: that really hurt my feelings. But yeah, I was a
- 4:17Speaker 1: little bit surprised that I had a really fun time
- 4:20Speaker 1: with the episode. Like luckily this does not happen when
- 4:23Speaker 1: I watch anime around other people, but when I watch
- 4:26Speaker 1: it alone, especially if it's really upsetting, I just giggle
- 4:30Speaker 1: all the way through it. So I was just giggling
- 4:33Speaker 1: the whole time like a crazy person. And I wish
- 4:37Speaker 1: I didn't just tell you that. And there were some
- 4:40Speaker 1: like really high points in the cast, and I kind
- 4:43Speaker 1: of just wanted to talk to you about what I thought.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And I don't know if I'm gonna come back and
- 4:48Speaker 1: finish this up before I said it, and watch like
- 4:50Speaker 1: another episode or two, because I'm supposed to watch this
- 4:52Speaker 1: with my mom, so I might or you might just
- 4:56Speaker 1: hear me talking about the first episode. So let me
- 4:58Speaker 1: get to just talking a lit little bit about the cast. Okay,
- 5:02Speaker 1: let's stop right there. It's a week later, and this
- 5:05Speaker 1: is the week that this airs now, and I actually
- 5:09Speaker 1: watched the next two episodes, so I've seen up through
- 5:11Speaker 1: episode three now, so I want to talk about those two,
- 5:15Speaker 1: and I also want you to understand that that means
- 5:19Speaker 1: I've been working on this for like a solid week now,
- 5:22Speaker 1: and I had time to go back and edit this
- 5:24Speaker 1: to make this less embarrassing. I didn't, so there's something
- 5:29Speaker 1: wrong with me. But anyway, yeah, I liked episode two
- 5:32Speaker 1: and three a little bit less than I liked the
- 5:35Speaker 1: first episode voice acting wise, I mean, but I'm still
- 5:38Speaker 1: gonna go through this, and I want to talk about
- 5:40Speaker 1: the voice actors and which ones are doing like a
- 5:42Speaker 1: really really good job and which ones I'm not super
- 5:44Speaker 1: happy with. So let's actually do that. So for me,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I think, like the bright spot, like the absolute you
- 5:52Speaker 1: know voice actor that I think is crushing it the
- 5:55Speaker 1: hardest so far is probably Dino Goldzinai's voice acting Christopher Swindle,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and before I see anything else, you may have noticed
- 6:04Speaker 1: I pronounced his last name different. That's because I was
- 6:07Speaker 1: just fucking wrong about i'd pronounce it. When I heard
- 6:09Speaker 1: it in episode two, I got a little freaked out
- 6:12Speaker 1: because I was like, what do you mean I'm saying
- 6:14Speaker 1: his name wrong? What do you mean it's goal zena.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So then I was like, well, just because this person
- 6:20Speaker 1: said it doesn't mean it's true. And then I was
- 6:22Speaker 1: thinking about it and I was like, I bet it's
- 6:24Speaker 1: goal scene because I don't know why I'm even saying goal, see, like,
- 6:27Speaker 1: just because that's what it looks like to me. So
- 6:29Speaker 1: then I went and I checked the Banana Fish Official
- 6:32Speaker 1: Guidebook in Japanese, so I can't read it really, but
- 6:35Speaker 1: of course I can read some kata khana and hiti ghana.
- 6:38Speaker 1: So I looked for Dino's name because I was like,
- 6:42Speaker 1: that will solve it, because you can just have an
- 6:45Speaker 1: N at the end of a word like a hida
- 6:48Speaker 1: ghana or kata kana character for N, so it wouldn't
- 6:51Speaker 1: need to have an E at the end or anything
- 6:54Speaker 1: if it's just goal scene. And I was wrong there's
- 6:57Speaker 1: a NA at the end, so it is Goalzene. So
- 7:01Speaker 1: I apologize for fucking that up for twenty six episodes
- 7:04Speaker 1: of the show. Yeah, I am lucky that I never
- 7:10Speaker 1: said that I was gonna do a good job on
- 7:12Speaker 1: this show, but now you know it's probably Goalzine and
- 7:15Speaker 1: not Goalzceine. Fuck me. But anyway, honestly, he kind of
- 7:22Speaker 1: scared the shit out of me. The interactions in the
- 7:25Speaker 1: first episode between Dino and Ash made me like incredibly uncomfortable,
- 7:31Speaker 1: like much more than I'm used to, and I'm pretty
- 7:35Speaker 1: used to them making me very uncomfortable. So I was
- 7:38Speaker 1: like super impressed. He's got like a very flat delivery.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And I don't mean flat, like unemotional exactly. I mean
- 7:47Speaker 1: like he seems just based on his delivery, like he
- 7:51Speaker 1: doesn't sound like he's a scary guy, which is upsetting
- 7:53Speaker 1: to me because what he's saying isn't like not okay.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So I thought he's doing a really good job. As
- 8:01Speaker 1: for other cast people who I thought did a really
- 8:05Speaker 1: good job, yeah, the next person is Arthur's voice actor,
- 8:09Speaker 1: Pearson Fode, who I think has like basically no voice
- 8:13Speaker 1: acting credits, and I think he's perfect for Arthur, I
- 8:16Speaker 1: really do. I think he's doing a great job. He's
- 8:19Speaker 1: pretty much exactly like what I think Arthur would sound like,
- 8:22Speaker 1: So I'm really happy about that. Other than them, Skip's
- 8:26Speaker 1: voice actor, who you know isn't in a lot obviously,
- 8:30Speaker 1: Levi MiNet. Maybe he is fucking great. I mean, I
- 8:35Speaker 1: just thought he did a really really good job with Skip.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Sounded totally natural. I really really liked him. Those are
- 8:42Speaker 1: my big Like, I really like these people. I'm really
- 8:45Speaker 1: glad that they are in the roles that they are in. Oh. Also,
- 8:49Speaker 1: doctor Meredith's voice actor Richard Epcar, I'm not sure I'm
- 8:53Speaker 1: sold on his delivery, but his like the tone of
- 8:56Speaker 1: his voice is perfect, so that's working for me. As
- 9:01Speaker 1: for things, I'm not super happy about Charlie's voice and
- 9:06Speaker 1: Jenkins's voice, I'm just not I'm not feeling it. I'm
- 9:10Speaker 1: kind of conflicted on how I feel about Max's voice.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That's Keith Silverstein. I don't think he's doing a bad job.
- 9:16Speaker 1: He just doesn't sound like Max to me exactly, but
- 9:21Speaker 1: that to me problem. Also Shorter is Daniel Kim, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: I think he's doing fine. Like I'm not super super
- 9:27Speaker 1: in love with his delivery or anything, but I don't
- 9:31Speaker 1: have any problems with it either. Moving on from there,
- 9:35Speaker 1: the people that, of course are the biggest part of
- 9:38Speaker 1: Banana Fish that you really would hope would have solid
- 9:41Speaker 1: fucking voice actors are of course Ash and ag As
- 9:44Speaker 1: For Ash, I am kind of conflicted here because, like
- 9:49Speaker 1: I said, I like any Ash, probably maybe not Ai Ash.
- 9:55Speaker 1: He was a little weird, but pretty much any other Ash.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And I know from like, you know, Twitter posts and
- 10:02Speaker 1: shit like that that his voice actor, Brandon mckinnis, was
- 10:06Speaker 1: really really into this, and I appreciate that intensely, so
- 10:13Speaker 1: I want to give him like props and I want
- 10:15Speaker 1: to like his work because he like, really really cared
- 10:21Speaker 1: about this, and I think I mentioned it in a
- 10:25Speaker 1: previous episode that wasn't totally about Banana Fish, that he
- 10:30Speaker 1: was like journaling as Ash and shit like that. But
- 10:33Speaker 1: he also like he's he's doing some like methody shit,
- 10:36Speaker 1: Like he said he was holding his hands up in
- 10:39Speaker 1: episode nine, you know when Ashes like chained and like that.
- 10:44Speaker 1: He actually cried during the scene when Shorter died and stuff,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and I thought that was really fucking cool. He also
- 10:50Speaker 1: pushed really hard to get more curses in the anime
- 10:54Speaker 1: to get Ash to say fuck more, which makes me
- 10:57Speaker 1: like the happiest person in the world as someone who
- 11:00Speaker 1: was really afraid that the dialogue was gonna be toned down.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I don't know why I was afraid of that, but
- 11:05Speaker 1: I was really afraid. I know, for instance, that the
- 11:08Speaker 1: manga dialogue, I mean, even in Japanese, is a lot
- 11:11Speaker 1: more pointed, and Ash is a lot more foul mouth
- 11:14Speaker 1: than he is in the anime, but I kind of
- 11:17Speaker 1: thought that maybe the dub would be even a step
- 11:19Speaker 1: down from that. So the scene to go back the
- 11:21Speaker 1: other way and to get some fucks in there makes
- 11:24Speaker 1: me like, really really happy. I mean, he had said,
- 11:27Speaker 1: like in like a tweet or something that like, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: no one who's gone through what Ash has gone through
- 11:32Speaker 1: is gonna like watch his language, and I think that's
- 11:34Speaker 1: a fair statement. I mean, but also, he's a seventeen
- 11:37Speaker 1: year old in a gang, so I would be really
- 11:40Speaker 1: surprised if he's not cursing. And actually I told my
- 11:43Speaker 1: mom about this and she was like, well, he lives
- 11:45Speaker 1: in New York, so I guess that also plays in there.
- 11:49Speaker 1: But whatever, So I was really happy about that. I'm
- 11:52Speaker 1: really happy about his dedication. As for the actual voice
- 11:56Speaker 1: acting job that he's doing, I think he did okay.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Like I'm not totally sold. In these three episodes that
- 12:02Speaker 1: I've seen, at least there have been some really nice
- 12:05Speaker 1: high points, especially in episode one when he was kind
- 12:09Speaker 1: of like egging on Marvin the second time he did it.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I was like, I would be pissed off if I
- 12:14Speaker 1: was Marvin two, which is pretty good because normally when
- 12:18Speaker 1: anime characters get pissed off because someone says something, I'm like,
- 12:21Speaker 1: come on, no one would be pissed off of that.
- 12:22Speaker 1: So he would have gotten under my skin too. So
- 12:25Speaker 1: I liked that a lot. And there was kind of
- 12:27Speaker 1: like a flirtiness to him in that first episode that
- 12:29Speaker 1: was perfect. As for episodes two and three, there just
- 12:33Speaker 1: wasn't as much that I liked. But it takes a
- 12:37Speaker 1: while for Ash to get really noticeably vulnerable, So I'm
- 12:43Speaker 1: willing to wait and see how this goes. As of like,
- 12:46Speaker 1: the actual tone of his voice, eh, to me, it
- 12:49Speaker 1: doesn't quite work with what I want Ash to sound like.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I always thought that Yuma Uchidah's voice was a little
- 12:56Speaker 1: bit too low for Ash. I mean, at least after
- 12:58Speaker 1: I started reading the manga I did, so I wasn't
- 13:01Speaker 1: looking for like another super low Ash voice. I kind
- 13:06Speaker 1: of wanted Ash to have a little bit more grit
- 13:08Speaker 1: to him voice wise, but you can't always get what
- 13:11Speaker 1: you want ever. If you're me, so you know, I'm
- 13:16Speaker 1: okay with it for me. Kind of the voice actor
- 13:19Speaker 1: that I am concerned the most about is, unfortunately aj
- 13:22Speaker 1: O Komoto's voice. His voice actor is Jonathan Tanakaki, and
- 13:28Speaker 1: I don't really get it. Unfortunately, Jonathan Tanagaki does not
- 13:33Speaker 1: have a lot of voice acting credits. He is an actor,
- 13:35Speaker 1: but voice acting and acting as it just your whole
- 13:39Speaker 1: physical body person thing, is a little different, and sometimes
- 13:43Speaker 1: people who can do one can't really do the other.
- 13:45Speaker 1: That well, I'm not saying he can't voice act. I'm
- 13:48Speaker 1: just saying I don't know if it was a good
- 13:50Speaker 1: idea to start him. I mean, I think he's done
- 13:53Speaker 1: like a couple of video game roles, but I don't
- 13:56Speaker 1: think it was a good idea to start him in
- 13:57Speaker 1: like anime with like a do who is in all
- 14:01Speaker 1: of the episodes and has to, you know, deliver some
- 14:04Speaker 1: pretty emotional lines. I might get used to him, but
- 14:08Speaker 1: as of right now, like I wasn't sold, and I've
- 14:10Speaker 1: heard a couple of clips from later on, like an
- 14:12Speaker 1: episode eleven that like made me really nervous about how
- 14:17Speaker 1: well he was going to pull this off. So yeah,
- 14:21Speaker 1: that is kind of like the the pain point in
- 14:25Speaker 1: this for me. But it's important to remember that, of
- 14:28Speaker 1: course this is not going to be the best version
- 14:31Speaker 1: of Banana Fish. It can't be. It was being done,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I'm sure with a very limited budget and also very
- 14:37Speaker 1: limited time, So you can't expect this to be as
- 14:43Speaker 1: good as the Japanese original. You just can't. And I've
- 14:48Speaker 1: heard it said, like, you know, dubb should be getting better,
- 14:50Speaker 1: and I do agree with that in the idea that
- 14:54Speaker 1: like anime has gotten a much wider audience in the
- 14:57Speaker 1: last couple of decades, and I'd like to see the
- 15:01Speaker 1: increased awareness you know, kind of invested in it, and
- 15:06Speaker 1: studios and directors and whatever taking more time and care
- 15:09Speaker 1: into making things in their own language that like really
- 15:13Speaker 1: stand out. But like, as of right now, dubs are
- 15:16Speaker 1: just what they are. They're okay, So yeah, I don't
- 15:21Speaker 1: know where I'm going with this. The other thing that
- 15:23Speaker 1: like of course upset me, but I knew wasn't really
- 15:27Speaker 1: gonna happen, is God damn it? Can we just have
- 15:31Speaker 1: people who have the correct accents just once? Like, and
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm not saying every character in Banana Fish needs to
- 15:39Speaker 1: sound like they're from New York or from the mid
- 15:41Speaker 1: Atlantic somewhere, but some of them probably should. I kind
- 15:44Speaker 1: of feel like Dino gets a pass because I don't
- 15:46Speaker 1: quite know his background, and Ash could also get a
- 15:50Speaker 1: pass too, because A he's not from New York and
- 15:54Speaker 1: B He's been around Dino and probably expected to speak
- 16:00Speaker 1: in a very specific way. So I'm gonna give him
- 16:03Speaker 1: a pass even though I don't want to. I'm just
- 16:05Speaker 1: gonna be nice. But most of the rest of the cast,
- 16:08Speaker 1: especially like Jenkins and Charlie and any other cops we see,
- 16:12Speaker 1: people like Skip definitely shorter, and most of like the
- 16:18Speaker 1: kind of street punk gang people, they really really should
- 16:22Speaker 1: have New York accents. Maybe not like Max, because I
- 16:27Speaker 1: think he's from Philly if I'm remembering from the manga correctly,
- 16:29Speaker 1: so maybe he should sound a little bit more like me.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Not that I sound like I'm from Philly completely, but
- 16:35Speaker 1: like it just would have been nice, It would have
- 16:38Speaker 1: like elevated things a little bit. But like I said,
- 16:41Speaker 1: like three minutes ago, I'm pretty sure this is made
- 16:43Speaker 1: on a budget, limited time, so I get it. But
- 16:47Speaker 1: I would have like just been like the most happy
- 16:50Speaker 1: person in the world if they had attempted that. Anyway.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Besides that, speaking about the actual script in the dub,
- 17:00Speaker 1: there are some breakpoints and some sore spots there as well.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Obviously there were changes, like dialogue is being like localized,
- 17:09Speaker 1: which can be good or bad. In this case because
- 17:13Speaker 1: it is set in the US, localization is very very
- 17:16Speaker 1: good as long as it's done not stupid. So there
- 17:20Speaker 1: are a couple of times that I was really really
- 17:23Speaker 1: happy with the way things were changed, in a couple
- 17:25Speaker 1: where I wasn't. So, first of all, I want to
- 17:27Speaker 1: talk about the thing. There was only one time that
- 17:30Speaker 1: I was like, oh man, really, that's that's stupid, basically,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and that was in episode two when Ash is in
- 17:37Speaker 1: the hospital and Charlie's talking to him, and Charlie's trying
- 17:42Speaker 1: to get him to, you know, basically explain like what
- 17:45Speaker 1: he has, what does he have on Dino? How are
- 17:48Speaker 1: we going to bring him down? And Ash does not
- 17:50Speaker 1: want to talk to Charlie because Ash doesn't like cops,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and Ash doesn't believe Charlie could help him, so Ash
- 17:56Speaker 1: is trying to end the conversation, and in the dub
- 18:00Speaker 1: Ash says, go on, Jayla, powerless kid without the money
- 18:03Speaker 1: and influence to protect himself, which sounds fine until you
- 18:08Speaker 1: realize that the actual Japanese is something more like lock
- 18:13Speaker 1: me up for murder if you want. I'm just another
- 18:15Speaker 1: worthless hoodlum. Anyway, now he is basically saying the same
- 18:19Speaker 1: thing in both He's saying just throw me in jail,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I'm not worth anything. But to me in the English,
- 18:26Speaker 1: like that is too in depth, like it's too much
- 18:30Speaker 1: of almost like this is supposed to be a teachable
- 18:32Speaker 1: moment for Charlie, like don't forget I'm just some helpless kid.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Like Ash is never gonna say that, like no, because
- 18:40Speaker 1: he doesn't want Charlie to empathize with him in this situation.
- 18:44Speaker 1: He wants Charlie to leave, and he also kind of
- 18:47Speaker 1: hates himself, so for him to just be like, hey,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm just another fucking hoodlump. Just get out of here,
- 18:53Speaker 1: much better and much more pointed, And I really don't
- 18:57Speaker 1: like this change. It just it feels really on the
- 18:59Speaker 1: nose in not a way that should be on the nose,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and I'm not saying banana fish isn't blunt with what
- 19:04Speaker 1: it's trying to say. A lot of the time, I'm
- 19:06Speaker 1: just saying here it was blunt in the wrong way.
- 19:10Speaker 1: So that's the thing that sticks with me as so far,
- 19:13Speaker 1: I was just like, man, I wish they didn't do that.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Everything else has been basically fine, and some things have
- 19:18Speaker 1: been actually good. So the one thing that I should
- 19:23Speaker 1: probably say because I'm seeing it talked about online again
- 19:27Speaker 1: and I just wish people knew, but they don't know.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And We've talked about this before because I extensively researched
- 19:33Speaker 1: it because I'm insane. Is in episode one, Ash is
- 19:37Speaker 1: talking to Marvin and he says slur. I guess I'll
- 19:40Speaker 1: just say it. He says fag and I was like really,
- 19:44Speaker 1: So I looked into it and obviously that's not what
- 19:47Speaker 1: he's saying. He's saying guessuyato, which means scumbag basically, or
- 19:53Speaker 1: you know, something like that. It's not a derogatory poke
- 19:57Speaker 1: at somebody's sexuality. So that has always been a big
- 20:01Speaker 1: point of contention for me in the subtitles because it
- 20:04Speaker 1: doesn't make sense, like you can be like, well, that
- 20:08Speaker 1: was really upsetting. So I liked it, Yes, but it's
- 20:11Speaker 1: not said. It's not in the spirit of what's being
- 20:14Speaker 1: said either. So in the Doug we got sleees bag here,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and I could have like stood up and clapped. So
- 20:24Speaker 1: I know that that doesn't feel as mean and vicious
- 20:27Speaker 1: as you know, saying a slur there. But the slur
- 20:31Speaker 1: was wrong, so I'm glad it's not being perpetuated. And yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I haven't seen anybody correct any of these people who
- 20:39Speaker 1: are like I wish that he said it, and I
- 20:41Speaker 1: thought of doing it, but I don't really like talk
- 20:43Speaker 1: on the internet to people because it's scary. So I
- 20:46Speaker 1: have it, but if you want to, please do anyway.
- 20:51Speaker 1: So there's that. That's probably what made episode one so
- 20:54Speaker 1: good for me, just not having that anymore. And then
- 20:58Speaker 1: there are a couple of times in episodes two and
- 21:01Speaker 1: three that I was also like, yay, so first I'll
- 21:03Speaker 1: talk about the part in episode three because it's just
- 21:05Speaker 1: not that big of a deal. In episode three, Ash
- 21:09Speaker 1: gets thrown in solitary confinement and then he comes out
- 21:12Speaker 1: and they're talking about it and they call it their
- 21:14Speaker 1: repentance cell, and I was like, that's not a thing
- 21:18Speaker 1: in America. We would never call it that. So they
- 21:20Speaker 1: just changed it to solitary confinement or solitary or whatever
- 21:24Speaker 1: they said. So I was like, yay, that's perfect. And
- 21:26Speaker 1: then in episode two there were a couple of changes
- 21:29Speaker 1: to Evenstein's dialogue that made me like so uncomfortable that
- 21:33Speaker 1: I was like excited about how upset I was, and
- 21:38Speaker 1: they unfortunately would have made me understand immediately what was
- 21:42Speaker 1: going on, because if you remember, I was like, I
- 21:45Speaker 1: don't really know what hustling means, Like it could mean
- 21:48Speaker 1: like anything to me, like making a lot of money,
- 21:51Speaker 1: like tricking someone at pool so you could make money
- 21:55Speaker 1: from them, but like prostitution is like in there, but
- 21:58Speaker 1: like we weigh in the back for me, so like
- 22:00Speaker 1: I didn't connect it right away. So the dub basically
- 22:04Speaker 1: solved that. And if you remember, in the manga, they
- 22:06Speaker 1: just translated to turning tricks, and I was like, oh, prostitution.
- 22:10Speaker 1: So in the anime, now we have the original version.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Evenstein said, at least what we have in the subtitles
- 22:18Speaker 1: was just hope you're not hustling anymore. In the anime,
- 22:23Speaker 1: now we have not still hustling. I hope. I mean,
- 22:26Speaker 1: a girl's got to make a living, and I would
- 22:28Speaker 1: have gotten it right then. So I actually really really
- 22:32Speaker 1: liked that and it made me uncomfortable, and I thought
- 22:35Speaker 1: it was perfect and mean, really really mean, I don't
- 22:40Speaker 1: like Evenstein, but you already know that, or Evenstein? How
- 22:45Speaker 1: come I don't know how to pronounce his name anyway?
- 22:47Speaker 1: And then slightly further on in that interrogation, there's a
- 22:52Speaker 1: spot where he says in the subtitles, that's who is
- 22:56Speaker 1: in it? Ash, how old were you then? Ten eleven?
- 22:59Speaker 1: A little older in The Dove? Now we get say
- 23:03Speaker 1: he looks familiar, does any Ash? How old were you
- 23:06Speaker 1: in this one? Ten? Maybe eleven twelve? Tough to say
- 23:10Speaker 1: you've always looked so young? Fuck. So I just thought
- 23:14Speaker 1: that those were both really really good improvements on the
- 23:17Speaker 1: dialogue basically, and it's weird that those are the ones
- 23:20Speaker 1: I'm highlighting, but they are all of this to say
- 23:24Speaker 1: that I am really excited about actually watching The Dove, which, yeah,
- 23:29Speaker 1: it's weird for me, but apparently I just like this
- 23:32Speaker 1: that much that it's just okay. So if you haven't
- 23:36Speaker 1: seen Banana Fish and you've been putting it off because
- 23:38Speaker 1: you don't read subtitles because you don't like too, or
- 23:42Speaker 1: you can't or something. Now it's the time where you
- 23:46Speaker 1: can watch it and it's not an Ai dove anymore,
- 23:50Speaker 1: so good for you. And honestly, even though it will
- 23:53Speaker 1: never be as good as the original Japanese dialogue version,
- 23:58Speaker 1: if it even gets one more person to watch Banana
- 24:02Speaker 1: Fish and cry about it, I would gladly take it,
- 24:07Speaker 1: and also take that weird thing that's happening in my
- 24:10Speaker 1: brain where I can kind of hear Brandon mckinness's voice
- 24:13Speaker 1: as Ash, which I don't like because I already have
- 24:15Speaker 1: a set voice in my head as Ash. I will
- 24:17Speaker 1: take it if just a few more or even one
- 24:20Speaker 1: more person can cry about Banana Fish. And that's really
- 24:24Speaker 1: all I wanted to say here, which is insane. So
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'm just gonna end with this. If you're watching the
- 24:30Speaker 1: Banana Fish dub and you want to tell me about
- 24:33Speaker 1: how you feel about it, please go ahead. You can
- 24:36Speaker 1: email me. In the show notes, it says my email.
- 24:39Speaker 1: It's like Michelle starts with Michelle, so you'll know when
- 24:42Speaker 1: you see it. You email me and you say, Michelle,
- 24:45Speaker 1: I thought the dub was great or terrible or I
- 24:48Speaker 1: didn't understand anything you said in this podcast, or I'm
- 24:51Speaker 1: scared of you. Now just tell me you can't. You're
- 24:55Speaker 1: a person and you have ways to communicate. I guess
- 25:00Speaker 1: thing that I also would like your opinion on is,
- 25:03Speaker 1: as I said, you know, a couple of minutes ago,
- 25:07Speaker 1: I'm supposed to watch the dub with my mom, because
- 25:11Speaker 1: we started watching Banana Fish a couple of months ago
- 25:14Speaker 1: or a year or two ago, and she's seen all
- 25:17Speaker 1: of six episodes so far. And my family and I
- 25:21Speaker 1: when I was like a kid, we all used to
- 25:23Speaker 1: just like sit around and watch anime together, mostly subtitled,
- 25:27Speaker 1: so she like watches it subtitled, but she gets really
- 25:31Speaker 1: tired when she has to look at subtitles, so she
- 25:34Speaker 1: fell asleep through like a couple episodes in the middle.
- 25:36Speaker 1: So she got like all excited and like, we're gonna
- 25:38Speaker 1: just watch the dub together and that's gonna be awesome,
- 25:41Speaker 1: and hopefully we can do that soon and get through
- 25:43Speaker 1: at least a bunch of episodes so I can say
- 25:45Speaker 1: things like, ah, this happened, and I'm sad and I
- 25:49Speaker 1: want to talk to you about it, and instead of
- 25:51Speaker 1: being like, oh, Michelle, I don't know why you are
- 25:53Speaker 1: talking to me about things I don't understand. She could
- 25:56Speaker 1: be like, oh, I totally understand that, Michelle, and you're
- 25:59Speaker 1: still weird. But what I'm trying to say is I
- 26:06Speaker 1: was thinking of, and I'm not sure she's going to
- 26:08Speaker 1: go for this, but I was thinking of having her
- 26:10Speaker 1: do like an episode with me where we just kind
- 26:13Speaker 1: of talk about how she feels about banana fish. If
- 26:16Speaker 1: that's something you'd like to hear, which is you know,
- 26:19Speaker 1: me talk to my mom, which you don't know probably
- 26:22Speaker 1: unless you are someone who knows me in real life
- 26:26Speaker 1: and knows my mom, would you like that? Do you
- 26:29Speaker 1: think that would be fun? I think if you are
- 26:31Speaker 1: listening to this, you probably remember I talked to my
- 26:33Speaker 1: friend Enrique on this podcast about banana fish and he
- 26:38Speaker 1: had some really mean things to say about ash. But
- 26:42Speaker 1: do you want to hear my mom talk about it
- 26:44Speaker 1: with me? Let me know by like doing that thing
- 26:48Speaker 1: where you use your computer and then you email me
- 26:52Speaker 1: thoughts and maybe prayers. But that's really all I have.
- 26:57Speaker 1: And I will see you next month for number six
- 27:02Speaker 1: And yeah, I hope you have and are having a
- 27:08Speaker 1: really good whatever, And later weeps
