- 0:00Coming up. On this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast, DJ Mark
- 0:06the forty five King passes away why I'm excited for the Rick Ross and Meek
- 0:13Mill collaborative album and while A signs a deal with Deaf Jam Records, do
- 0:22we care it is the real question? Yeah, I guess, so let's
- 0:29do it. Welcome to hip Hop Now podcast. If you from the future,

- 1:27know. Big shout out to hip hopdx dot com, The Source Magazine dot
- 1:34com, djbooth dot net, and a couple of places where I'm getting some
- 1:40of these stories from. Let's get right into the business, though, So
- 1:47this week Djmark the forty five King passed away, not just the DJ,
- 1:56not just a producer, but one of the most slept on producer is ever
- 2:01in fifty years of hip hop. Now by now you've probably seen headlines about
- 2:08him. You've probably seen on your timeline information about him, informations and information
- 2:15about songs he's produced, some of which you know and some of which you
- 2:21don't know. I think the headlines for most hip hop sites are like,
- 2:25you know, producer of jay Z and Eminem, which is true. He
- 2:31gave them some some of the biggest hits, in particular Eminem. Did you
- 2:38know the brother DJ Mark the forty five King produced Staying by Eminem? I
- 2:49either forgot about that or I never knew, because when I saw that,
- 2:53I was like, wait a minute, hold on, what when? I
- 2:58don't remember that? But it speaks to, you know, him being so
- 3:04slept on in that regard and him working with Eminem at that point in his
- 3:08career because Eminem was red hot. Stan was on Eminem's second album, Right
- 3:14the Marshall Mattis LP, which took him to the next level. But working
- 3:17with j right but probably for me and my memory is his work with Queen
- 3:28Latifa and Flavor Unit early on. That's kind of how I knew him,
- 3:34mainly with Queen Latifa in her early years. You know, wrath and math
- 3:38and all of that. You also may not know if you were a YOMTV
- 3:44raps fan back in the day. Remember when Ed Loved used to put on
- 3:49that one particular beat, what is it, one nine hundred number something like
- 3:53that, and he would do that stupid dance that I'm not going to do
- 3:58on video. I'm not going to do it, not not gonna be able
- 4:01to do. That's the East Egg for nineties cats. But I'm just saying
- 4:06I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna do it. But it was a particular
- 4:10dance. He would do it all the time. Now, I'm not not
- 4:12to be confused, but the one I liked the mayor from Rap City.
- 4:17You know, you already know I'm a cheer. I won't chill, but
- 4:20I ain't gonna do the other dance. But nevertheless, DJ Mark the forty
- 4:27five King also produced that he's one of those people who or one of those
- 4:34examples let me say that one of those examples of producers in the music industry
- 4:42historically even artists that became producers who you have no idea how much impact and
- 4:50influence that person has had in music. Big shout out to my expert opinion,
- 4:58matth Hoffa's they got dr period on there right. I'm watching clips of
- 5:05him talk about different things he's produced, but I'm really tuning in because I'm
- 5:10like, oh, yeah, Mop, that's all that's in my head,
- 5:13Mop, But this man has produced way more than that, way more,
- 5:18you know what I'm saying, and it and it's crazy because I don't know
- 5:25because maybe I don't listen to some of the artists that they produced. But
- 5:30I feel like with DJ Mark the forty five King, I think his name
- 5:33was so synonymous with Queen Latifa back in the days the flavor unit one hundred
- 5:41number or one eight hundred number. I always forget which one it is.
- 5:45It's like that's where his legend stayed, even though his legend is much much,
- 5:51much greater than that. So I just wanted to start to show out
- 5:58obviously would talk about him in some ways, but also telling you to go
- 6:04and do the knowledge, man, like do the knowledge on him. There
- 6:09are so many cats like him that are still around that are produce it like
- 6:13Kwame right, like the people that are producing hits who used to be somewhat
- 6:18in the limelight at one point in time, and older cats like myself see
- 6:26them as oh I remember him from back in the days, but not knowing,
- 6:30you know, staying as one of my to me, one of my
- 6:33one of the greatest hip hop songs of all times. Just and it's very
- 6:36simple in his realm structure and his storytelling and even the beat, but it's
- 6:44how everything comes together. And he's not a beat maker, he's a producer.
- 6:47He produced that record. So rest in peace to him, prays to
- 6:56his family. You will be missed, but you will be forgotten, all
- 7:00right. So this came out of nowhere, y'all. Rick Ross and Meek
- 7:10Mill have a song out right now called Shaq and Kobe song is dope.
- 7:15It's dope off. I love it. I didn't even get to Rick Ross
- 7:20verse before I was like, Yo, this the one, you know,
- 7:24And I thought originally I was like, oh, you know, maybe Meek
- 7:28got an album coming out, or because he's due, or maybe Rick Ross
- 7:31because Rick Ross, you know, he drops the albums frequently, so maybe
- 7:35he got an album coming out. I did not know that they have an
- 7:41album coming out, and if I can just skate over to my I'm trying
- 7:50to stall, y'all, let me stall, you know, let me I
- 7:54mean, let me stall. Skate over to my phone real quick and look
- 7:59at the title of the album. They have an album coming out, Rick
- 8:05Ross and Meek Mill. Too good to be True. Now, this wasn't
- 8:09something that was on my Christmas list, right, You know how that go.
- 8:13You put something on your Christmas list you really want it, but this
- 8:18is one of those things you didn't ask for because maybe you think you'd ever
- 8:22get it, or you didn't know you wanted it as much, and you
- 8:26get it for Christmas anyway. Releasing November tenth, twenty twenty three, on
- 8:33may Back music group Shaq and Kobe is the first single, but they also
- 8:39have another single, I'll call Lyrical Easy. I never heard that one,
- 8:43and I'm not going to press play because you can't because podcasts and YouTube.
- 8:48But when I say this is my most anticipated album, maybe not of the
- 8:56year, because there's some things that I still wish would happen before we and
- 9:00the yeah I'm looking at you, jay Z, and I don't care what
- 9:03y'all say about Detox. If we're going to get NAS's bootlegged album that never
- 9:11came out, we could get Detox. I'm just saying, maybe it starts
- 9:15to trend. But nevertheless, this is on my most anticipated list of what
- 9:22I know so far. You know what was and it was kind of a
- 9:26letdown and weside gun and then pray for me. I mean, if you
- 9:35want to know my review and my thoughts checked the last episode, I say
- 9:39everything I feel about it and I still feel the same way today. But
- 9:45what I like most about this collaboration between meet Mill and Rick Frost was they
- 9:54set the expectations right up front, right Shaq and Kobe. It's kind of
- 9:58dope, right, Yo, he's a big boy, you know, he's
- 10:03Shaggy's Kobe right to beat, his right way it need to be. The
- 10:07energy is right way, it need to be, the bars. Everything is
- 10:09perfect and it make and probably most importantly, they sound good together. Like
- 10:18some people link up and maybe they do a feature and it's cool. Some
- 10:24people link up and then they decide to do a joint project together and it
- 10:30just sounds like two different people got together. Like for example, I give
- 10:33you a couple of examples Davis and stous P. It could be a group
- 10:39because when they put out that project, they sound really good together. Stous
- 10:43P did the same thing with ty Lib. It was good, but I
- 10:48thought it sounded like Style's P and solo and ty Lib did you know a
- 10:56bunch of features together? It didn't sound like a group. Same thing with
- 11:00styles P and have It right. It was cool, but it was also
- 11:05kind of weird because it really got weird because it was like the Locks and
- 11:09Mob Deep, but this sound more like we could actually be a duo.
- 11:16Now what is scary? When I look at this and you know how I
- 11:20get down with these long ass albums. It says there are seventeen tracks.
- 11:28I'm leaving room for least two skits or intro and an interlude or something.
- 11:33Right, so maybe it's fifteen, But will it get tired after a while?
- 11:41Now, I know there's some people out there who just don't like me.
- 11:45Mel Yohyi always screaming. I mean, so what like he doesn't sound
- 11:50like anybody? That's the point. Cats will listen and buy the same sounding
- 11:54people a million times over and try to come up with some ludicrous of saying
- 12:01they're different. From that one. No, it's the same dude, like,
- 12:05it's the same same flow, same approach saying, talking about the same
- 12:09stuff everything. These two complement each other. Their voices are very different.
- 12:16They approach the beats very different. Meek Mill it's Shack and Kobe Man.
- 12:22Shaq did not play like Kobe. Kobe did not play like Shack, but
- 12:26they were both deaf. Stated That's all I'm saying. Now, Do I
- 12:30think this is going to be like album of the Year, No, I
- 12:33don't know. Do I think it has a shot for my top five?
- 12:39I think if it's if this album is anything like that first single, hell
- 12:43yeah. And not that it has to all be on that level. But
- 12:48I'm just saying I like Meek. I don't think Meek. I think Meek
- 12:52has one not even Whack, just one album that was just okay. The
- 12:58rest of his albums are hot, you know. But if you are distracted
- 13:03by his the volume, the gain on his voice when he raps, you're
- 13:09never gonna like him. I don't know why you have a press play if
- 13:13you don't like that. Rick Ross just talks about the lavish life and a
- 13:18lot of food references. You'd never like them. Anyway, so why are
- 13:22you listening? But if you like both of them, maybe one check out
- 13:30the joint Shack and Kobe, because to me, that is like the best
- 13:35example, like if they were trying to get on as a as a group,
- 13:39they didn't have record deals already and all that, we didn't know them
- 13:41and all that, and they were trying to get on, and that Shaq
- 13:43and Kobe joint was one record they brought up. I wouldn't say, damn,
- 13:48y'all should be solo, though, you know, you could do that
- 13:52afterwards, but I'd be like, Yo, that's a good idea, Shaq
- 13:54and Kobe. That one dude's skinny and tall, those dude kind of fat.
- 13:58Not saying that's what a Shack and Gope he was, but you know
- 14:01what I mean. But yeah, man, I don't know, so we'll
- 14:05see man November tenth. Too good to be true collaboration. I think that
- 14:11works. Like even on the album cover they got to seeing glasses on like
- 14:15it's just I don't know something about It's just like this just feels right,
- 14:20you know what I'm saying. It just feels like, yo, when this
- 14:22drop, you know, Thanksgiving, this is my soundtrack. I hope,
- 14:28so we'll see. And lastly, so it was announced very recently. If
- 14:37you're from the future, you already heard this. He probably alread dropped out,
- 14:39I can get your ass out of here. But that wallet has now
- 14:45signed to death Jam Records. According to TMZ for Lauren, that wile a
- 14:54be saying that, y'all. If you don't know, ain't. They contract
- 14:56with the famed label several months ago, but had kept it under wraps until
- 15:01now. The DC native is set to kickstart the next chapter of his career
- 15:07with the release of a new single on October twentieth, which he teased on
- 15:13social media earlier this week, and this is what he posted. My silence
- 15:18has been golden. See you on Friday. Now, y'all, this song
- 15:24is probably out and I haven't heard it yet because today is the twentieth when
- 15:28I'm recording this. Let's talk about wi a real quick, just real quick,
- 15:37now that I'm not going to use a lot of your time to talk
- 15:41about real quick. Wilet is not whack, if that's where you think I'm
- 15:43going. He's not whack. He can't be very annoying on social media.
- 15:48He's kind of he kind of got low. I give him credit for that.
- 15:52I always say this, man, there was a point in time where
- 15:58it was like the new generation hit all at the same time. Wile,
- 16:04a Kid, Cuddy, Meek, Mile, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar,
- 16:11and Drake and Nicki Minaj. Right, it just felt like you just had
- 16:18all these artists that were now like top ten superstars. But when it came
- 16:25to the fellas I knew Meek, Kendrick, Drake to a certain extent,
- 16:33Wile and Cole were going to battle for the same slots. Like I was
- 16:40curious as to who would be the best. Meek first album to me didn't
- 16:47meet expectations. Same thing with J Cole, but they made up for later.
- 16:52Even Drake's first album was cool, but I don't know many people that
- 16:56go back to that one. But he had a lot of attention anyway,
- 17:00he was doing big. But when it came to Walle, he also his
- 17:08situation was also cool. But I feel like when it came to his career
- 17:12where the other ones kind of had these super highs, you know what I'm
- 17:18saying, and not really a lot of lows at all in some situations as
- 17:22far as the music they created and the success I felt like Wilele had a
- 17:26ton of radio success, but people don't always talk about his albums now.
- 17:33The mixtapes are different story. I think wile a mixtape wise, he has
- 17:41he has classic mixtapes, right, And I always used to say on this
- 17:45very podcast that what Wilele deals with and where he's stuck is where J Cole
- 17:53was able to dig himself out of right. J Cole legendary mixtape. But
- 18:00when he released his first album and even somewhat Born Center, you could tell
- 18:06they were trying to make him into one image that he really wasn't at heart,
- 18:12and that image was more so clean cut like Drake, like clean cut,
- 18:17likable sing songy versus singles. But when you listen to his mixtapes,
- 18:23he was a spinner, right. That's exactly the same thing for La.
- 18:30For Wila is kind of he saw a little bit more success with his single,
- 18:36his radio singles. It's just that cats when they think about him on
- 18:40some hip hop stuff, if they haven't heard the mixtapes, he's not a
- 18:44factor when it comes to bars and he could rap, but his success has
- 18:52been well, I'm just single, single, single single, and J Cole
- 18:56was able to just be like, okay, well, I mean I have
- 19:00the glorious stephan on hook anymore, but now I get more popular if having
- 19:06bars for being nice like that? So will While as signing to death Jam,
- 19:11what does that mean? And that's what I mean when I say do
- 19:17we care? Because are we going to get the same wallet we've always had,
- 19:22just on a different label? Or is death Jam? Does death Jam
- 19:29recognize that what he creates on mixtapes, as far as how he writes and
- 19:34the songs he rings, should now become a part of who he is on
- 19:40his major releases. That would be interesting if they're going to take a different
- 19:44direction, but there's no indication that they would given his successful radio singles.
- 19:51What does he want? Right? Was he in a deal with That's all
- 19:55he could do to stay afloat to be able to get this kind of a
- 20:00deal. So I wonder about that, And probably lastly, what does it
- 20:07mean to sign to def Jam today? If this was the eighties or nineties
- 20:17or even early two thousands, it meant a lie. But now I don't
- 20:22think record labels are as popular as they were back then, Like it meant
- 20:30something to sign to those labels because of who was already on those labels,
- 20:36and it meant that you were just as good as them because they also signed
- 20:38you. Now there was a pointality was signing everybody and nobody came out.
- 20:42But what does that mean today? You know? Is this some sort of
- 20:48magic that comes with that that Wileet is now going to benefit from or does
- 20:52it just benefit from a better system to help promote his music, which is
- 20:57good for what will that music be? So, I mean, after this,
- 21:03I'm gonna listen to his single and see if it's anything different from what
- 21:10I expect from him from a single standpoint, and if it is it,
- 21:17I probably won't listen to the album. If it is what I hope it
- 21:22is, then I'll I'm definitely gonna tune in when it's time for his album
- 21:26to drop, because I will say this, there was one album that I
- 21:30cannot remember the name of that he had that I thought was like really good
- 21:34and that was kind of his pocket right, got your radio singles, got
- 21:38your storytelling, you got some of that mixtape vibe on there? Just make
- 21:42this and then I think his next album's coming out, heard the single and
- 21:48I was like, I like this for the radio, but I'm not checking
- 21:51out your album because I'm sorry too much, so we'll see you know.
- 21:56What do you think about wild At? Are you a fan? Do you
- 21:59own any music from wild At don't matter if it's mixtapes, albums, or
- 22:03whatever. Are you excited for his now collaboration signing with Def Jam? I
- 22:10don't know. Also, when you think about the Shaq and Kobe thing,
- 22:14Nick mill and mc ross, have you heard the singles? You like it?
- 22:17It's trash? What you tell me? Leave your comments in a comment
