- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to The Favorites, the podcast presented by BET three
- 0:12Speaker 1: sixty five. We are part of the Volume Podcast Network.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I am Chad Melman of the Action Network. I'm live
- 0:18Speaker 1: from my Tommy John home studio. I'm joined as always
- 0:22Speaker 1: by my co host, my companion, my Campadre might be
- 0:25Speaker 1: a FAFT professional better Simon Hunter. Hello, Simon, Chad.
- 0:30Speaker 2: How are we doing? Brother?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Listen dude, I'm in the middle of an epic, epic
- 0:37Speaker 1: travel streak. I've been gone for three to four days
- 0:42Speaker 1: of every week and just about every weekend since the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Got home late last night after visiting Penn
- 0:53Speaker 1: State University over the weekend with my son. We're narrowing
- 0:58Speaker 1: down the college choices. We're getting down to the end.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I am going to ask my guests, because he's intimately
- 1:04Speaker 1: familiar with all of the places that my son has left.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm going to want to get his opinion on it.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But the NCAA tournament is underway. You and I have
- 1:12Speaker 1: a very special guest. He's honestly, he's an inspiration to
- 1:17Speaker 1: a lot of the people on our production staff, some
- 1:22Speaker 1: of whom he's actually worked with very closely, including myself.
- 1:27Speaker 1: He's always been an incredible producer, one of the legendary
- 1:31Speaker 1: ESPN producers. He became a beloved media personality, not television,
- 1:38Speaker 1: not audio, all around media personality. Always been a passionate gambler.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I've known the guy for fifteen years, going back to
- 1:45Speaker 1: my ESPN days. You've seen him on Sports Center with
- 1:48Speaker 1: SVP College Game Day. Our OG listeners are going to
- 1:53Speaker 1: know him very well from not just the Behind the
- 1:57Speaker 1: Bets podcast from my ESPN days, he also co hosted
- 2:02Speaker 1: the spinoff podcast with Chris Filica, Behind the Bets the
- 2:07Speaker 1: College Years. A gambling content pioneer. It's Stanford, Steve Stanford,
- 2:13Speaker 1: Welcome to the show.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Brother, Hello fellas pleasure, Welcome U. Chad's been too long.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I was so pumped to see at the super Bowl.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Nice.
- 2:23Speaker 4: It's it's the best part, you know.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I think everybody that has to deal with the Super
- 2:29Speaker 3: Bowl finds their pockets and everybody has gotten to the
- 2:32Speaker 3: point where you know you it's like, you know, Kyle
- 2:37Speaker 3: Brant did the best thing about seeing people at the
- 2:39Speaker 3: super Bowl.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I thought it was tremendous. Just the three questions that
- 2:41Speaker 4: are asked.
- 2:42Speaker 3: But people know what to expect when you've done so
- 2:45Speaker 3: many of them, and you know, I'm not the concert
- 2:49Speaker 3: going guy. I'm not gonna you know, I just have
- 2:51Speaker 3: zero interest. And the best times I've had are you know,
- 2:56Speaker 3: a little small private party or just telling guys, hey,
- 2:59Speaker 3: I'm at this hotel bar, let's let's meet there. And
- 3:02Speaker 3: those are the best times because you go to these shows,
- 3:04Speaker 3: you can't hear a word anyone's saying, uh, and you
- 3:08Speaker 3: want to talk to people because you haven't seen him
- 3:09Speaker 3: in social media is a great connection, but you're not
- 3:12Speaker 3: getting what you can get and then you see things
- 3:15Speaker 3: on social media that people are posting and you're like, eh,
- 3:19Speaker 3: I'd love to ask about that, and that's the time
- 3:20Speaker 3: to do it.
- 3:21Speaker 4: So it was great to catch up with you. And
- 3:25Speaker 4: it's been too long.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I you know, people talk about you know, it's it's
- 3:30Speaker 3: it's always like, how.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Did you go from producer to TV?
- 3:33Speaker 3: And your name is the first one that comes up
- 3:35Speaker 3: because you gave you gave the bear and I a
- 3:39Speaker 3: little on ramp to the highway that I didn't know
- 3:43Speaker 3: what was podcasts and you did and your vision has
- 3:47Speaker 3: always been just incredible to me. Uh, going back when
- 3:51Speaker 3: you used to come in in studio every week with ESPN,
- 3:54Speaker 3: the magazine with Scott and Ryan us developer friendship there
- 3:57Speaker 3: and I mean you literally had us on and like yeah, Harry,
- 4:01Speaker 3: go go do your own and not knowing what the
- 4:04Speaker 3: platform was, and then to hear people react and then
- 4:08Speaker 3: Baron and I get to get to interact with the
- 4:10Speaker 3: people we did and and and get get people to listen.
- 4:15Speaker 3: It was I'll never forget it.
- 4:16Speaker 4: It was.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I can't believe it's been fifteen years.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I wasn't even expecting that.
- 4:24Speaker 3: No, man, I try and say out of sight, out
- 4:28Speaker 3: of mind, It's not true. People always remember certain things.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Maybe certain people remember want to remember certain things. But no, man,
- 4:37Speaker 3: I'll never forget the opportunity you gave us, and it's
- 4:41Speaker 3: turned into an unbelievable run. This past year at college
- 4:44Speaker 3: football was most fun I've ever had, with the playoff
- 4:48Speaker 3: and traveling, going to Bloomington for the first time among
- 4:52Speaker 3: the top things. So it's a pleasure to meet you guys,
- 4:55Speaker 3: appreciate you, what you guys do, what you've built. It's
- 4:59Speaker 3: really really in credible in this, you know, podcasting and gambling.
- 5:04Speaker 3: It feels like it's ever going to end, and there's
- 5:06Speaker 3: got to be a roof at some point. But how
- 5:11Speaker 3: early you started at Chad is still something I'm amazed by.
- 5:14Speaker 3: And the belief that you had in yourself and establishing
- 5:16Speaker 3: a crew is really really cool to see because we've
- 5:18Speaker 3: seen plenty go by the wayside.
- 5:20Speaker 4: And here we are.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Dude. I got a feeling. Matt Mitchell and Gifford, who
- 5:24Speaker 1: used to work with you at ESPN, Yeah, they're probably
- 5:26Speaker 1: going to cut all that out.
- 5:28Speaker 4: But had any purposes. I get it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Listen the behind the bets the college years. That was
- 5:34Speaker 1: the most natural evolution, Simon. You would not know this
- 5:37Speaker 1: because you did not care about me before you DM
- 5:41Speaker 1: me on Twitter. But the podcast that how old is
- 5:45Speaker 1: Simon Simon Simon's thirty.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Five thirty five? Yeah, Chad, Chad knows the deal.
- 5:51Speaker 5: I lived the life there for I was living in Vegas,
- 5:53Speaker 5: degener gambler, so Risilla NSVP did make my cut though,
- 5:58Speaker 5: So I didn't listen to gambling stuffcause I don't want
- 5:59Speaker 5: to my head. Yeah, you know, I'm gonna know it all, asshole,
- 6:02Speaker 5: especially back in those days. But yeah, when I was
- 6:05Speaker 5: a runner, living in my car, running from across Vegas,
- 6:09Speaker 5: long days, lots of SVP and Marcille and they're random
- 6:13Speaker 5: gems of Stanford Steve just humble in for one or
- 6:17Speaker 5: two seconds.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You know that is Stanford Steve. I'm sure you've heard this.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Everyone's favorite character on any show is the guy that
- 6:22Speaker 5: talks for maybe one or two minutes. Right, So I
- 6:24Speaker 5: hit the point of like I liked SVP, I liked Forcillo,
- 6:27Speaker 5: but anytime I got to hear at Stanford Steve's story,
- 6:29Speaker 5: especially your glory days of college, I'm just like, fuck,
- 6:32Speaker 5: this guy is the man. So yeah, obviously seeing what
- 6:34Speaker 5: you were started out as where you're at now, man,
- 6:37Speaker 5: it's it's pretty epic how you've taken that little niche
- 6:40Speaker 5: and made it to a huge, huge career.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Man, you're the man.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Yeah, Chad, Chad created that niche. So again, thank you.
- 6:46Speaker 4: I'm serious. I'm telling you because it.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Was, man, because I mean, I would, I would even
- 6:52Speaker 3: I would still get shipped from from Radio PRIs. You're like,
- 6:55Speaker 3: what are you doing, Like I'm going to tape of podcast.
- 6:58Speaker 3: They're like what, like you're talking, I'm like yeah, and
- 7:03Speaker 3: it it it turned into what it did.
- 7:06Speaker 4: But yeah, behind the bets, man, holy Cayle, that was long.
- 7:10Speaker 1: We were doing that show from across the studio. With
- 7:14Speaker 1: SVP and Rosillo and even Feli could crush that. You
- 7:18Speaker 1: used to come on Behind the Bets and we would
- 7:20Speaker 1: do an episode a segment on Behind the Bets just
- 7:23Speaker 1: about college football, and at some point, like you guys
- 7:27Speaker 1: just didn't need me doing it. You could go for
- 7:30Speaker 1: so long. It was also just the most classic natural
- 7:35Speaker 1: off ramp transition because of Saved by the Bell, the
- 7:38Speaker 1: college years for the old heads. Yea, the perfect name.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Carry on, gentlemen, and it was fucking great.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 3: I mean, you're you hated college football and you will
- 7:49Speaker 3: just wanted to talk NFL and it couldn't have worked
- 7:52Speaker 3: out better because I could care less about the NFL
- 7:55Speaker 3: and I love college football.
- 7:57Speaker 4: So that was that. Would you nail it out of
- 7:59Speaker 4: the park.
- 7:59Speaker 1: That's called complimentary football, right there, Stanford, That's what that is.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Are we going to talk about or are we going
- 8:05Speaker 4: to talk about? Which is? What is the right side
- 8:07Speaker 4: at all? Remember those arguments?
- 8:10Speaker 1: Well, the right side is the winning side. That's that's
- 8:12Speaker 1: the bottom line. Let me do a little business right here.

- 9:38Speaker 1: to rsv P. All right, Stanford, we know you're a
- 9:44Speaker 1: Duke guy, not a Duke grad, but a Duke fan. Like,
- 9:51Speaker 1: there's a long list of teams in the past you
- 9:55Speaker 1: could see winning the tournament, and right now, like Florida
- 9:59Speaker 1: came on strong. Yeah, obviously, Auburn struggled at the end
- 10:04Speaker 1: of the season. Duke has basically three guys who will
- 10:08Speaker 1: be first round picks. How many teams do you think
- 10:12Speaker 1: can realistically win it all? Right now?
- 10:14Speaker 3: Ooh, glad you asked. I got my list right here.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Duke's region, the East, actually has the most. I make
- 10:20Speaker 3: a list every Valentine's Day of teams that I can
- 10:22Speaker 3: think can win the national title.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Then it changes when the.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Bracket comes out because I get it, and you guys
- 10:29Speaker 3: know the deal with gambling people, and like all they
- 10:32Speaker 3: want is picks.
- 10:32Speaker 4: They want picks, they want picks, and it's.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Really really hard because I still think the bracket dictates
- 10:38Speaker 3: how I feel and until I see it and see
- 10:41Speaker 3: the matchups and all that, I don't really have a
- 10:43Speaker 3: great feel. But that gives you more clarity because you
- 10:48Speaker 3: start to see pass.
- 10:49Speaker 4: And things like that.
- 10:50Speaker 3: So I have five teams in Duke's bracket that I
- 10:55Speaker 3: believe can win the national title, and one is hanging
- 10:58Speaker 3: on by a whisper. But I can't give up on
- 11:00Speaker 3: them because again, the hardest thing we do in this
- 11:03Speaker 3: world we do. We do things as far as you know,
- 11:06Speaker 3: picks and all that is forgetting what a team looked
- 11:08Speaker 3: like the last time we saw them, and it's it's
- 11:11Speaker 3: the hardest. I think it's the hardest thing with NBA
- 11:13Speaker 3: betting when you start getting the series. I think it's
- 11:15Speaker 3: the hardest thing with college football after a team plays
- 11:17Speaker 3: a big game, say on the road, because if you
- 11:22Speaker 3: if you focus in on how bad a team look
- 11:25Speaker 3: and they played bad, you're just setting yourself up. And
- 11:28Speaker 3: it's it's really hard to do. You gotta you gotta
- 11:30Speaker 3: clear the table and assess things and the basis of
- 11:32Speaker 3: here and and with the tournament. In that bracket, I
- 11:35Speaker 3: have Duke Arizona BYU Wisconsin is the team that's hanging
- 11:38Speaker 3: on by a thread in Alabama. Wisconsin was a team
- 11:42Speaker 3: I really like getting better all year, and then you
- 11:44Speaker 3: go to the Big Ten title game, they play their
- 11:46Speaker 3: worst game of the year and lose. And now you
- 11:48Speaker 3: look at their draw. Now they got to go to Denver.
- 11:51Speaker 3: They played Sunday afternoon. The teams that have played in
- 11:53Speaker 3: Big Ten title games don't have a great history.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:56Speaker 3: And then say a tournament and so you go to Denver.
- 12:00Speaker 3: All right, you got to play the Montana team, who's
- 12:02Speaker 3: not bad at all. Watch them through the season. I
- 12:06Speaker 3: actually think they could do pretty well and cover that number.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But Wisconsin's that team. And then BYU and Alabama are
- 12:12Speaker 3: the two teams I'm so bummed they're in the same bracket,
- 12:16Speaker 3: just like Florida and Saint John's. I'm sure we'll get
- 12:18Speaker 3: to But BYU and Alabama were two teams I thought
- 12:21Speaker 3: all year they got to get out of the conference
- 12:23Speaker 3: and get to tournament play because of what they bring
- 12:26Speaker 3: in the table as far as matchups, size, length, style
- 12:30Speaker 3: of play, all that. I love what BYU and Alabama
- 12:33Speaker 3: bringing the table, and that one was tough. I keep
- 12:36Speaker 3: going back and forth of who's going to the final
- 12:38Speaker 3: four out of that and I honestly think Arizona beats
- 12:41Speaker 3: Duke because when you look at what Arizona brings to
- 12:44Speaker 3: the table, they're better and better. They're getting. You know,
- 12:47Speaker 3: the acron pick is getting more popular and more popular,
- 12:50Speaker 3: but it seems like the line keeps going up, which
- 12:52Speaker 3: I don't like at all. I think it's up to
- 12:53Speaker 3: thirteen wherever you're getting numbers from. But Arizona played Duke
- 12:58Speaker 3: already this year. They lost into usan low scoring game.
- 13:01Speaker 3: It was after Duke got beat by Kentucky. I think
- 13:04Speaker 3: Duke really really needed it and Tommy Lloyd was still
- 13:07Speaker 3: figuring out their lineup. And now you look at what
- 13:09Speaker 3: Arizona did in the Big twelve tournament, which is super
- 13:11Speaker 3: impressive to me. I love the way their guards play,
- 13:15Speaker 3: and you have the ultimate Kale Love factor.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Yeah, if he's bad, they're not gonna win.
- 13:19Speaker 3: But if he's good, kids brought a team in the
- 13:21Speaker 3: National Championship three years ago, So I look at Arizona.
- 13:24Speaker 3: It's super dangerous in that bracket, being really really tough.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Everybody's just saying Duke's got a path because you know,
- 13:30Speaker 3: they get Mississippi State and the winner Misssippi State and Baylor.
- 13:35Speaker 3: But I think it's more tricky than that. Those teams
- 13:37Speaker 3: are gonna be afraid they're gonna get everybody's best shot.
- 13:40Speaker 3: You don't know what Cooper is going to look like.
- 13:42Speaker 3: And I just I feel like it's a it's a
- 13:44Speaker 3: tougher then draw, and then you factor in another thing
- 13:48Speaker 3: that I always look at.
- 13:49Speaker 4: And when we.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Got off the air last night at two am, nine
- 13:54Speaker 3: million and over nine million brackets submitted at ESPN dot
- 13:57Speaker 3: com Duke winning that.
- 14:02Speaker 4: I want part of that. You got a zero.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I sometimes I feel Simon, tell me if you feel
- 14:07Speaker 1: the same way. I mean that you're a professional better,
- 14:09Speaker 1: But obviously college basketball wasn't where you make your money.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I've always felt like the BRAC, the people creating the seedings,
- 14:19Speaker 1: the selection committee, either they have an ear for what
- 14:26Speaker 1: gamblers don't want to see or they are so unself
- 14:30Speaker 1: aware they fuck every team that gamblers really want to
- 14:34Speaker 1: believe in. And I feel like I saw it all
- 14:37Speaker 1: over the brackets this year, even with Auburn, Like Auburn
- 14:42Speaker 1: is the number one overall seed, they got to go
- 14:46Speaker 1: to Kentucky and then they potentially have to play Louisville,
- 14:50Speaker 1: which is essentially a home game in Lexington for Louisville
- 14:53Speaker 1: in the second round if Louisville wins its opening round
- 14:56Speaker 1: game against Creighton, Like, what the fuck is up with
- 14:59Speaker 1: the selection? When you look at this Stanford, do you
- 15:03Speaker 1: feel like they have an ear for what gamblers are thinking?
- 15:06Speaker 1: Or do you think they're just bad at this?
- 15:08Speaker 4: I think they're bad, I really do. You look at
- 15:11Speaker 4: some of the spreads.
- 15:12Speaker 3: I mean, like I said, I love BYU and that
- 15:16Speaker 3: VCU game is brutal because VC is a great defensive team.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Now VC has only played two tournament teams and you
- 15:25Speaker 3: know they got to go to Denver, as I pointed
- 15:27Speaker 3: out after playing Sunday Afternoon too, which you know likes BYU.
- 15:31Speaker 3: But then the lines in the twos, I think, and
- 15:35Speaker 3: then you just look at twelve five Colorado State's favored
- 15:38Speaker 3: over Michigan, now, like it's brutal the way they do it,
- 15:42Speaker 3: And you know, I always held back that it was
- 15:45Speaker 3: done the right way, but this year, I just I
- 15:46Speaker 3: can't with the North Carolina thing, Like you know, bracket
- 15:49Speaker 3: what's the site, bracket matrix, one hundred and eleven brackets
- 15:53Speaker 3: all you know, bracketologist computers, the whole thing, one hundred
- 15:57Speaker 3: and eleven out of one hundred and eleven had West
- 15:59Speaker 3: Virginia and Carolina out, and you know, and then you
- 16:03Speaker 3: see the selection show with the vice chair now because
- 16:07Speaker 3: Bubbo's lady of Carolina, like Baba.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Who got seventy thousand dollars bonus because Carolina.
- 16:13Speaker 4: I couldn't.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I can't get there now. And I think it's a
- 16:17Speaker 3: shame because this being the brand. And you know in
- 16:22Speaker 3: Indiana factors into it too, because immediately I saw Carolina
- 16:26Speaker 3: and I'm like, well, Boise States out uh and they're
- 16:29Speaker 3: just gonna go with the names. And then you see
- 16:30Speaker 3: Texas and it's like whoa. So it's it's brutal because
- 16:35Speaker 3: I always want the little guys to go. And I
- 16:37Speaker 3: get the SEC is the best conference ever with fourteen teams,
- 16:41Speaker 3: and I watch it as much as anybody, but like
- 16:44Speaker 3: you're just you know, I still you know, you look
- 16:47Speaker 3: at teams like Drake, if they didn't win their conference tournament,
- 16:49Speaker 3: I thought they deserved to me in they're like thirty
- 16:51Speaker 3: and four. You know, at some point I want teams
- 16:54Speaker 3: that are capable. And it's only gonna get worse. Hurt
- 16:57Speaker 3: people talking like the out of conference games that all right,
- 17:00Speaker 3: they want to.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Get Quad one wins.
- 17:02Speaker 3: You know, all the shoe companies do the preseason scheduling,
- 17:06Speaker 3: like out of conference preseason, that's all done with shoecomp.
- 17:10Speaker 3: MAUI has a Nike school under Armoured. Indeed, it's like
- 17:12Speaker 3: they control all that, so the little guys can't even
- 17:15Speaker 3: get in on that. And then like I look at
- 17:18Speaker 3: everybody's picking high Point right because they're playing Purdue. It's
- 17:21Speaker 3: pretty basic why everyone's picking high Point. They see a
- 17:24Speaker 3: good record, they see perdue forget that they went to
- 17:27Speaker 3: the national title game last year, and just think about
- 17:29Speaker 3: year's previous re Painter has failed, who I think is
- 17:32Speaker 3: still an excellent coach. High Point hasn't played a Quad
- 17:35Speaker 3: one game in two years. How do you equate? How
- 17:38Speaker 3: do you equate that? Like it's just you know, going
- 17:41Speaker 3: off on a woman. I'm sure they'll win and people
- 17:44Speaker 3: will be happy and say I told you so, But
- 17:45Speaker 3: I can't. I can't get there doing that when I
- 17:48Speaker 3: look at what I watch and you know, I mean
- 17:52Speaker 3: it's the ultimate dice dice, ultimate dice roll this tournament,
- 17:56Speaker 3: and you know, coaches are judged on what they do
- 17:58Speaker 3: in this thing.
- 17:59Speaker 4: And I think it's tough.
- 18:00Speaker 3: You go to a guy like Rick Barnes, you know,
- 18:02Speaker 3: I think the world of them, the way he's recruited,
- 18:04Speaker 3: the different schools that he's won at, and he's got
- 18:06Speaker 3: one Final Four, But if you look close, there's plenty
- 18:09Speaker 3: of Sweet sixteen and Elite eights in there.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Like I think the world.
- 18:11Speaker 3: I wanted Houston and Tennessee to go to the Final Four,
- 18:15Speaker 3: and now they're in the same bracket. So it's always
- 18:18Speaker 3: handcuffs when it comes to the committee. But yeah, I
- 18:21Speaker 3: think they could be better.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Simon, you get all this second hand intel from all
- 18:33Speaker 1: the people you know that are professional betters, does it
- 18:36Speaker 1: ever make you want to go all in on college basketball,
- 18:39Speaker 1: like for an extra two months, just extend your season?
- 18:43Speaker 1: Do you see opportunities there? We've never actually talked about.
- 18:45Speaker 5: This, No, but I guess it's because it doesn't line
- 18:50Speaker 5: up well with football, where like, my hardest months really
- 18:55Speaker 5: are that December, January, February stretch, and then when I'm
- 18:59Speaker 5: done with that, I'm so it's like, fuck, am I
- 19:01Speaker 5: really about to learn a thousand college kids' names.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Are probably all gonna be gone within the next year
- 19:06Speaker 2: or two.
- 19:06Speaker 5: It's just a lot to take on, but college is
- 19:10Speaker 5: a thing where you can someone like me that's further
- 19:13Speaker 5: away from it.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I feel like I do make more money than the.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Guys who are locked in on it, and they are
- 19:17Speaker 5: so into it where I can pick their picks and
- 19:21Speaker 5: I don't overthink it. Like me and you joked about
- 19:23Speaker 5: it last year, we said it Yukon felt like free money,
- 19:26Speaker 5: and we bet that heavy and we wrote it all
- 19:28Speaker 5: the way to the finals. And sometimes it really is
- 19:30Speaker 5: that simple right there, that those unique years of great coaching,
- 19:33Speaker 5: great team, great team chemistry, don't overthink it where this
- 19:37Speaker 5: year I feel like starver Seve's talking about a little
- 19:39Speaker 5: bit where they're it's open. Like every team that is
- 19:42Speaker 5: the best, there's a weakness to it. There is a
- 19:44Speaker 5: reason you can talk yourself into them failing. So these
- 19:47Speaker 5: are my favorite type years were last year, me and
- 19:49Speaker 5: you had fun because we made a ton of money
- 19:51Speaker 5: bet in Yukon. I want the madness, like that's what
- 19:54Speaker 5: we're here for. We're here for the madness. And last year,
- 19:56Speaker 5: not that it wasn't a great tournament, we just didn't
- 19:58Speaker 5: have the madness like we wanted. So this year I'm
- 20:01Speaker 5: I'm really looking forward to it. I feel like we're
- 20:03Speaker 5: gonna have a really crazy open field. I don't know
- 20:04Speaker 5: if Stanford Steve has the same view totally.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Like I said, I have plenty of teams that I mean,
- 20:10Speaker 3: each region has at least three teams I believe that
- 20:12Speaker 3: can win a national title. Now I'm more optimistic for
- 20:16Speaker 3: certain teams and don't look at the path, but I
- 20:18Speaker 3: just think about what I watch when I see that team.
- 20:21Speaker 3: You know, everyone talks about, you know, the Saint John's
- 20:23Speaker 3: Florida bracket, right, I mean, Florida could not be more
- 20:27Speaker 3: impressive and how good the SEC was. They won every
- 20:30Speaker 3: game in the tournament by double digit points. And they
- 20:33Speaker 3: played let's see, I'm trying to think of it. They
- 20:36Speaker 3: played a ten seed in Arkansas or no, that was Auburn.
- 20:40Speaker 3: I forgot who they played. Oh, they beat Missouri, they're
- 20:42Speaker 3: a six seed. Then they beat Alabama's a two seed,
- 20:46Speaker 3: and they beat Tennessee, who's a two seed, all by
- 20:49Speaker 3: double digits.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Like I get it.
- 20:51Speaker 3: I kind of want them to lose, so the odds
- 20:52Speaker 3: would the odds would help, but you that's what you
- 20:55Speaker 3: get here.
- 20:56Speaker 4: And are you guys.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Familiar with the with the Calcuttas and all that what
- 20:59Speaker 3: are the auction for the team?
- 21:01Speaker 4: I can't wait.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I think Yukon went for close to forty K and
- 21:05Speaker 3: ours last year and it was warranted, like we were
- 21:09Speaker 3: in on for a while and I'm just like, man,
- 21:10Speaker 3: this is because you have to win the tournament. There
- 21:15Speaker 3: Where I like this year more where I could pick
- 21:18Speaker 3: some teams off at a cheaper price. That can Hey,
- 21:20Speaker 3: all I need is them to get to sweet sixteen.
- 21:22Speaker 3: And we made money on this team. So that's why
- 21:25Speaker 3: we have ours in a couple of days. I can't wait.
- 21:27Speaker 3: But it's more open, there's more options, and we've done
- 21:30Speaker 3: an unbelievable job of avoiding the monster upsets. A couple
- 21:36Speaker 3: of years ago, Illinois was the most expensive team. They
- 21:39Speaker 3: lost in the second round of Loyola like that that
- 21:42Speaker 3: hurts man. Auburn was red hot, won the SEC Tournament
- 21:46Speaker 3: last year, big highest priced four seed by far Lucia
- 21:50Speaker 3: on the first round.
- 21:51Speaker 4: We've done a good job of that avoiding that.
- 21:54Speaker 3: So that's another factor in the whole gambling thing that
- 21:57Speaker 3: if you know you know it, you're fascinated by it.
- 21:59Speaker 3: It's super fun when it goes well. But uh yeah,
- 22:02Speaker 3: we've done a good job of avoiding the catastrophe.
- 22:04Speaker 1: You when you do your Calcuttas. And I'll explain it
- 22:08Speaker 1: sort of as generally as I can so people understand.
- 22:11Speaker 1: It's basically your buying teams that you think are going
- 22:17Speaker 1: to win the entire tournament, and you're basically going all
- 22:21Speaker 1: in on those teams. But you can invest in sort
- 22:23Speaker 1: of three four different teams depending on the number of
- 22:27Speaker 1: people in the Calcutta and the size of the pool
- 22:29Speaker 1: that you want it to be, et cetera, et cetera.
- 22:32Speaker 1: When you are playing in a Calcutta, do you go
- 22:36Speaker 1: in with a couple of people that you're pooling your money?
- 22:38Speaker 3: Oh?
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah O.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Our biggest thing is we basically have the percentages, but
- 22:44Speaker 3: we don't know the big We don't know the total
- 22:46Speaker 3: number yet because you don't know what you spend until
- 22:48Speaker 3: you know. So it's you know, that year with Illinois,
- 22:51Speaker 3: we got out on Illinois. They were and they ended
- 22:55Speaker 3: up going for high twenties, I would say, and I
- 22:58Speaker 3: think we got I think we were in at like
- 23:01Speaker 3: nineteen and they were like the first one seat because
- 23:04Speaker 3: you do it backwards, like you get the eleven and
- 23:06Speaker 3: fourteen seed in a region. I think you get twelve
- 23:09Speaker 3: and fifteen how we do it? But then once you
- 23:13Speaker 3: get to you know, the top four seeds, it's every
- 23:18Speaker 3: team's its own. So you know, a couple of years ago,
- 23:22Speaker 3: who do we have Oral Roberts when they made the
- 23:24Speaker 3: run like we I think we spend twenty five hundred
- 23:29Speaker 3: and they got to the Elite eight like we were.
- 23:31Speaker 3: In the way they do it is you don't know
- 23:33Speaker 3: the payouts for each round because you don't know how
- 23:36Speaker 3: much money is in the pop. But once you know that,
- 23:38Speaker 3: you know a first round win and second round win
- 23:40Speaker 3: are are one percent of the pot, and then it
- 23:42Speaker 3: doubles and it keeps doubling, and it's you know, you
- 23:47Speaker 3: you those sweets. To get to the sweet sixteen is enormous.
- 23:51Speaker 3: To get to the Laite A is even bigger, and
- 23:53Speaker 3: obviously the final four and title gamer are monstrous. But
- 23:57Speaker 3: it's it's a super super fun and we got you know,
- 24:00Speaker 3: we've been together five years I think now since I
- 24:03Speaker 3: moved here, So it's super super fun. If you if
- 24:07Speaker 3: you get a chance and and and you want to
- 24:10Speaker 3: take a different way of looking at the tournament, it's
- 24:11Speaker 3: totally different because it also gives you betting chances, you know,
- 24:15Speaker 3: if if you you know, it's sort of a you
- 24:19Speaker 3: know the opposite of a happiness hedge, where you know
- 24:22Speaker 3: you could do that. So and then if you don't
- 24:24Speaker 3: get the team that you really wanted, uh, you can
- 24:27Speaker 3: go bet them, you know, if you want it. Uh,
- 24:30Speaker 3: if you if you're really that confident and there's discrepancies
- 24:32Speaker 3: on your team or something like that. So it it
- 24:34Speaker 3: creates a whole nother viewpoint of the tournament, which I
- 24:38Speaker 3: find super super cool.
- 24:39Speaker 1: You know what, I don't know that I've ever asked
- 24:41Speaker 1: you this, or if I did, I can't remember the answer.
- 24:45Speaker 1: You're from Connecticut, Like, how did you get into betting?
- 24:50Speaker 4: Uh?
- 24:53Speaker 3: Being around people that we're doing it and weren't supposed to, Uh,
- 24:58Speaker 3: you know a lot of relatives and Chad. It's funny
- 25:02Speaker 3: I get asked. You know, you guys get all questions,
- 25:04Speaker 3: all that you always betting, every gonna stop the advertising,
- 25:07Speaker 3: the whole thing. I just think people are so much
- 25:11Speaker 3: more better off now because you know, I seen and
- 25:15Speaker 3: heard horror stories of you know, local bookies, right, and
- 25:20Speaker 3: you see these people and they're just betting on credit.
- 25:23Speaker 3: So yeah, they're gonna run if they're not. You know,
- 25:25Speaker 3: the rule number one is you can't bet money you
- 25:28Speaker 3: don't have. That's that, that's rule number one in gaming.
- 25:30Speaker 3: You you're only asking for trouble if you do that.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And with the apps, now your money's are like it's
- 25:36Speaker 3: already there, you know, Yeah, I want you want a
- 25:39Speaker 3: hundred bucks on a game, they're taking it right then,
- 25:42Speaker 3: and then you get it.
- 25:42Speaker 4: You get it.
- 25:43Speaker 3: On the other end, it's just like going to a
- 25:44Speaker 3: book in a sports book at any of the places,
- 25:47Speaker 3: and there's no more betting with credit. So I think
- 25:50Speaker 3: the way yeah, if you if you have direct access
- 25:55Speaker 3: to the account where that app is set up, you
- 25:58Speaker 3: could run into some issues, but it's fun. Is just
- 26:01Speaker 3: just wheeling and trying to play catch up. It's kind
- 26:04Speaker 3: of it's kind of not you're not able to do
- 26:06Speaker 3: it on these apps because the money's up front. So
- 26:09Speaker 3: seeing that and and everybody be infatuated with the parlays,
- 26:13Speaker 3: now I get it. It's way healthier than the stuff
- 26:17Speaker 3: that I grew up around, where it was going against
- 26:20Speaker 3: rule number one, and it was people betting money that
- 26:23Speaker 3: they didn't have and being allowed to because they were
- 26:25Speaker 3: betting on credit with the guy.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Was that just like family friends, family buddies in the neighborhood.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, the old slips.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Back in the day, you remember the slips, Yeah for sure.
- 26:37Speaker 3: You know, those slips were going around high school like hotcakes. Man,
- 26:41Speaker 3: you get your hand on a slip and somebody's booking
- 26:44Speaker 3: it and then somebody hits one and they don't have them.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Like it's it all started then, Man.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Who listen back in the day, this is semi before
- 26:53Speaker 1: Simon's time, maybe not, but parlay cards were the big thing,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and parlay cards would just fly through the high schools, yep.
- 27:00Speaker 1: And that's how it got a lot of people into bedding.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Like Simon, you live sort of on the cusp of
- 27:06Speaker 1: all this because you know, Stanford and I are a
- 27:08Speaker 1: little bit older than you.
- 27:09Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 27:10Speaker 5: But like Delaware, my old my memories of Delaware is
- 27:14Speaker 5: going to a pizzeria and filling out a parlay card
- 27:16Speaker 5: at the pizzeria while waiting to get my slice. And
- 27:19Speaker 5: it's like, you know that was at seventeen eighteen, Like
- 27:22Speaker 5: we drive down from Jersey to Delaware, they'll get a
- 27:25Speaker 5: slice and make a bet.
- 27:26Speaker 2: And yeah, the thing Steve's talking about like cracks him up.
- 27:30Speaker 5: I'll think about like my bookie, especially when I was young,
- 27:33Speaker 5: is not only the credit thing, but like having to
- 27:36Speaker 5: meet up with that bookie to give cash too and
- 27:38Speaker 5: having that conversation and being like I'm one hundred short
- 27:41Speaker 5: and give me that look of like it's no problem,
- 27:43Speaker 5: like he knows he's got you down the road anyway.
- 27:45Speaker 4: You got my number exactly.
- 27:48Speaker 3: And the other thing too, Chad, is people don't get
- 27:52Speaker 3: like like from twelve to one on an NFL Sunday,
- 27:56Speaker 3: like everybody knew where the guy was and you had
- 27:58Speaker 3: to call and that's when like, you know, there they
- 28:01Speaker 3: didn't usually have what do we call it total phone
- 28:04Speaker 3: where you could you know, call waiting. It was just
- 28:06Speaker 3: like I'm trying to call it. It's busy, it's busy.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It's busy.
- 28:10Speaker 4: He's got the phone off the hook.
- 28:11Speaker 3: And so like you had to make the call and
- 28:13Speaker 3: and and to your points, like you had to go
- 28:17Speaker 3: meet up and like was there going to be a
- 28:19Speaker 3: conversation or you know, like it's just and you know,
- 28:22Speaker 3: everybody had their weeks, right all right, we close. You know,
- 28:25Speaker 3: the NFL was always do you give Monday night as
- 28:28Speaker 3: the as the end of the week, and and you know,
- 28:31Speaker 3: Uncle's another words. I live by Monday night football. If
- 28:35Speaker 3: this game was at Sunday at one o'clock, would you
- 28:37Speaker 3: be betting? And it's like probably not because but everybody's
- 28:40Speaker 3: down and they're trying to chase let's throw it down
- 28:44Speaker 3: and lose it.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Is it's not on Sunday at one o'clock. It's on Monday. Yeah,
- 28:51Speaker 1: I think I might.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Yep exactly, So oh god.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Yeah, well you mine. A buddy of mine just wrote.
- 28:57Speaker 1: His name is Alan Lobe and he has been on
- 29:00Speaker 1: the show before. He's a very successful screenwriter. He wrote
- 29:05Speaker 1: the movie twenty one, he wrote the movie Wall Street two.
- 29:08Speaker 1: He's written ten twelve movies that a lot of folks
- 29:12Speaker 1: have seen. Has continued to produce a lot. He just
- 29:15Speaker 1: wrote a story about his gambling addictions and actually was
- 29:21Speaker 1: really thoughtful about why he believes legalized sports betting is
- 29:25Speaker 1: better even though there are constant commercials now and this
- 29:28Speaker 1: has been a crazy week about sweep steak. So what
- 29:31Speaker 1: about the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission and whether or
- 29:37Speaker 1: not they're going to continue to allow the prediction markets
- 29:42Speaker 1: like robin Hood and Kelshi to allow full basically buying
- 29:46Speaker 1: and selling of teams in March madness that it's still
- 29:51Speaker 1: better because of what you just pointed out Stanford, which
- 29:54Speaker 1: is you're not betting on credit, right, you're not. If
- 29:58Speaker 1: you're digging yourself into a whole, it's a different conversation
- 30:01Speaker 1: than when you're digging yourself into a whole.
- 30:03Speaker 5: Long Now, young kids don't know I know guys who,
- 30:06Speaker 5: especially my Runner days, Chad, Like between twenty ten and
- 30:09Speaker 5: twenty twelve, I can tell you a handful of guys
- 30:12Speaker 5: that owed money, they became priest, or joined the military,
- 30:17Speaker 5: or just you know, completely disappear and move to Argentina.
- 30:21Speaker 2: You don't hear those stories as much as you did.
- 30:23Speaker 5: Back then because guys would get up to twenty k
- 30:26Speaker 5: thirty k debt and they don't have a dollar to
- 30:28Speaker 5: their name. So, like Steve's talking about, I'm getting all
- 30:30Speaker 5: these funny memories thinking back to these crazy characters I knew.
- 30:33Speaker 5: It's like, yeah, I haven't seen Jimmy in a couple
- 30:35Speaker 5: of weeks. Oh that dude's a fucking priest.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Now, dude, he's gone. It's like, what, Yeah, he's a
- 30:41Speaker 2: priest now.
- 30:41Speaker 5: It's like, those are the things I think back to
- 30:43Speaker 5: of those days of credit man, guys were just on
- 30:46Speaker 5: the run.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Oh fellas, before we witness any legendary buzzer beaters, Cinderella
- 30:54Speaker 1: stories or diaper dandy. Is this NCAA tournament at all
- 30:57Speaker 1: starts with all of us staying cool, calm and collected
- 31:01Speaker 1: this march, And the best way to do that staying
- 31:04Speaker 1: truly comfortable, the kind of flexible, breathable comfort only possible
- 31:09Speaker 1: through our sponsor, Tommy John. Before the confetti of a
- 31:13Speaker 1: better life can fall, before the first chords of a
- 31:16Speaker 1: one shining moment montage can play, we must strive for
- 31:21Speaker 1: best in class underwear and the best casual essentials money
- 31:25Speaker 1: can buy. So box out underperforming undergarments and crash the
- 31:29Speaker 1: boards of comfort with Tommy John Simon. Why will you
- 31:32Speaker 1: be wearing Tommy John in twenty twenty five?
- 31:34Speaker 2: Because comfort is King Chad.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Right now, you can shop Tommy John dot com slash
- 31:38Speaker 1: favorites and get twenty five percent off your first order.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Save twenty five percent at Tommy John dot com slash favorites.
- 31:44Speaker 1: That's Tommy John dot com slash favorites. Stanford. For those
- 31:50Speaker 1: who might not know your full backstory, your nickname is
- 31:53Speaker 1: Stanford because you played football at Stanford. I don't think
- 31:58Speaker 1: people realize how big of a recruit you were. Remind me, like,
- 32:05Speaker 1: where were you ranked when you were coming out of
- 32:08Speaker 1: high school? Because I also believe you had an offer
- 32:11Speaker 1: to Notre Dame. I think you and I talked about
- 32:13Speaker 1: this once. But give me sort of the context for
- 32:16Speaker 1: your football all star hood and where else you could
- 32:21Speaker 1: have gone.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Uh. I'm trying to remember the name of the magazine,
- 32:27Speaker 3: but this was pre internet nine athlon.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Was it athlon? No?
- 32:31Speaker 3: It wasn't athlon. It was like a blue chip illustrator
- 32:34Speaker 3: or one of.
- 32:34Speaker 1: The parade No.
- 32:36Speaker 3: I didn't make the parade team though, Oh gosh, what
- 32:41Speaker 3: was the name of it. Anyway, I'm on my visit
- 32:46Speaker 3: to Stanford and uh, Mosorysen was the guy who recruited
- 32:52Speaker 3: me and comes running out of his office like he
- 32:55Speaker 3: knew that I was there. I was there with my
- 32:57Speaker 3: brother on my visit and he's like, look, look, look, look,
- 33:01Speaker 3: and I'm like what He's like, they ranked you number one.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I'm like what And it was like number one player
- 33:06Speaker 3: in the country. I'm like, what the hell is this.
- 33:09Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, so I to make it quick, like
- 33:16Speaker 3: I could have went anywhere, you know, whatever people throw around,
- 33:19Speaker 3: five star. The whole thing like went on these visits,
- 33:22Speaker 3: went to camp at Notre Dame. Holtz was still there,
- 33:25Speaker 3: but that staff was in flux, a lot of miscommunication.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Mac Brown's at North Carolina. You know, Nebraska was really good.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Tom Osborne was there. Best guy in our league the
- 33:37Speaker 3: year before went to Nebraska, Tony Ortiz So there was
- 33:41Speaker 3: that connection. Spurrier came to the high school Heisman thing,
- 33:44Speaker 3: which was a Tristate area team that I made through MSG.
- 33:47Speaker 3: That was something I'll never forget. Eddie George won it
- 33:52Speaker 3: that year and then they selected fifteen guys in the
- 33:55Speaker 3: area and Spurrier saw my highlight film was like hey,
- 33:59Speaker 3: He's like, you want to We're playing national championship, you
- 34:00Speaker 3: want to come. I'm like, what, like literally the Monday
- 34:04Speaker 3: morning after my visit to Stanford and I'm like I'm
- 34:06Speaker 3: like driving home and I'm like looking at flights to
- 34:09Speaker 3: Arizona and like just had lunch with Tiger Woods at Stanford.
- 34:13Speaker 3: Like it was a complete, complete shit show. And to
- 34:18Speaker 3: be seventeen years old in that time, you know, you start,
- 34:22Speaker 3: you know, coaches could call once a week and you're
- 34:24Speaker 3: talking to all these coaches and you're building relationships, Hey,
- 34:28Speaker 3: how are you?
- 34:28Speaker 4: You know, how'd you play last week? How school going like?
- 34:31Speaker 3: And you start building relationships and then you got to
- 34:33Speaker 3: tell these guys no, And as a seventeen year old kid, like,
- 34:36Speaker 3: it was super super scary, and I remember just wanting
- 34:39Speaker 3: to get the list down because I wanted to be
- 34:41Speaker 3: done and decided before Christmas. And it was super frantic
- 34:46Speaker 3: scary and you know, not knowing like you know, we
- 34:50Speaker 3: see kids getting nil deals now and I just think
- 34:53Speaker 3: about like nil. I couldn't handle that, Like I couldn't
- 34:55Speaker 3: even figure out where I wanted to.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Go to school.
- 34:58Speaker 3: So yeah, it was best of the best treatre royalties
- 35:01Speaker 3: on visits and ultimately decided to go to Stanford because
- 35:06Speaker 3: my birthday is January first. Grew up watching the Rose
- 35:09Speaker 3: Ball on my birthday my whole life, and there was
- 35:11Speaker 3: always a dream to play on my birthday and to
- 35:16Speaker 3: go to a school like CEE Stanford, like I still
- 35:19Speaker 3: put it up against any campus in the world and
- 35:22Speaker 3: to be able to get that education because I really,
- 35:24Speaker 3: you know, my dad passed.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Away when I was going to my junior year of
- 35:27Speaker 4: high school.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Wanted to go out and prove myself, like I got
- 35:30Speaker 3: some growing up to do hair and was able to
- 35:32Speaker 3: do that and ended up playing in the Rose Bawl
- 35:36Speaker 3: against Ron Day in Wisconsin on my twenty third birthday,
- 35:39Speaker 3: which was my final game, and then took an Interjet
- 35:42Speaker 3: internet startup job that summer in August and was broken
- 35:48Speaker 3: out of a job by Thanksgiving. So that was that
- 35:53Speaker 3: was a that was a treat and a lesson to
- 35:56Speaker 3: learn really quickly. And I mean I I all the
- 36:00Speaker 3: time now with kids in college, Like you got to
- 36:02Speaker 3: have a plan.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Man.
- 36:03Speaker 3: It's not the cool thing to do when you're in college,
- 36:05Speaker 3: but shit, like when people are are done helping you
- 36:10Speaker 3: pick classes and all that, like it's just you and
- 36:13Speaker 3: your whatever support system you got, and if you don't
- 36:15Speaker 3: have it or have a plan, that's the roughest transition
- 36:19Speaker 3: I think in a lifetime, because you're getting handed things.
- 36:22Speaker 3: I mean, as a as a scholarship football player, you're
- 36:25Speaker 3: getting handed things that you're so taken for granted and
- 36:29Speaker 3: then to be punched in the face.
- 36:31Speaker 4: You know. Living in Powell Out, we're a Menlo Park,
- 36:36Speaker 4: no check.
- 36:36Speaker 3: And I was never a guy that was like, yeah,
- 36:38Speaker 3: you know, speaking of betting with credit, Yeah, I got,
- 36:40Speaker 3: I got month, I got rent next month like I got.
- 36:43Speaker 3: I was like, I'll never forget, like Monday took the
- 36:46Speaker 3: job in like labor day August twenty twenty. No, I
- 36:50Speaker 3: mean August two thousand and Monday before Thanksgiving, like call
- 36:54Speaker 3: my mom and like I'm out of a joht, Like
- 36:56Speaker 3: we got bought out and like it was done. Like
- 36:58Speaker 3: you never heard those stories of the internet. So like
- 37:00Speaker 3: I had guys that got in like late nineties, got
- 37:03Speaker 3: in with Google.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Uh who Yahoo? Like whoever?
- 37:07Speaker 3: Like off and running like set in five years after
- 37:11Speaker 3: being graduated, and I'm broke without a job. Uh, not
- 37:16Speaker 3: even four months out of college. So uh it was
- 37:18Speaker 3: pretty eye opening. But I wouldn't trade it in.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Uh.
- 37:21Speaker 3: People ask me all the time, would you rather gone?
- 37:22Speaker 3: I could have went to any SEC school. Uh, but
- 37:25Speaker 3: the friends and things I was able to do at Stafford,
- 37:28Speaker 3: I'll never trade in for anything.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Do you remember the name of the company?
- 37:34Speaker 4: I don't.
- 37:35Speaker 1: What were you? What were you doing?
- 37:38Speaker 4: Uh? It was some like internet sale.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I have no idea, just I didn't even know what
- 37:42Speaker 3: I was doing. It was just you know, a couple
- 37:44Speaker 3: of guys and who were like, hey, let's do this.
- 37:48Speaker 1: So yeah, I know that era. It's interesting you say that.
- 37:55Speaker 1: You know, we were talking before I came on about
- 37:58Speaker 1: colleges and like, I'm just going through this whole process
- 38:01Speaker 1: with my kid right now. Who's narrowing it down? It's
- 38:05Speaker 1: coming down to Maryland, Penn State, and Indiana was sort
- 38:09Speaker 1: of the third tier. And wherever we've gone, he's met
- 38:12Speaker 1: with the people who run the programs that he's interested in,
- 38:16Speaker 1: and every time we're done, he's like, he loves the
- 38:19Speaker 1: school he just met with. Yeah, just at Penn State.
- 38:22Speaker 1: But I think part of it is he feels badly
- 38:26Speaker 1: saying no to people who have been so nice to him,
- 38:29Speaker 1: about saying, hey, come here and this is what we
- 38:31Speaker 1: can do, and not like he's being recruited like an athlete.
- 38:34Speaker 1: It's a completely different thing. But when you're seventeen years old,
- 38:37Speaker 1: I can see it. I can see how hard it
- 38:40Speaker 1: is if someone is being kind to you to say
- 38:43Speaker 1: no to them. It's brutal.
- 38:44Speaker 4: Yeah, and I've it's tough.
- 38:47Speaker 3: I mean, I got three little girls and I'm looking
- 38:50Speaker 3: at kids. You know, I go to high school games
- 38:52Speaker 3: all the time, and in this area it's loaded. I
- 38:55Speaker 3: mean I watched the tournament and notice how many kids
- 38:58Speaker 3: are from the DMV.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Way, went and had lunch.
- 39:01Speaker 3: With a kid two weeks ago who's in college, journalism, communications,
- 39:07Speaker 3: the whole thing, and we're talking and I'm just you know,
- 39:10Speaker 3: the idea of how to get on air obviously comes up,
- 39:14Speaker 3: and like when I'm taught, when he asked me a question,
- 39:17Speaker 3: He's looking at me in the eye and I'm looking
- 39:19Speaker 3: at him asking him, like he's not even making eye
- 39:22Speaker 3: content him, Like.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Dude, you got it.
- 39:23Speaker 3: This has got to change, Like put the phone down,
- 39:26Speaker 3: and like there's there's nothing more important still in my
- 39:32Speaker 3: like than face to face conversations, like even if it
- 39:35Speaker 3: is on a zoom, like we're looking at each o.
- 39:37Speaker 3: You know, you know, expressions, the whole thing. Uh So,
- 39:41Speaker 3: it's it's it's really really hard. I think it's a
- 39:44Speaker 3: lot because I hate to say it, but I go
- 39:47Speaker 3: back to COVID with kids now, like you don't know
- 39:50Speaker 3: what they were going through.
- 39:51Speaker 4: I mean nobody was.
- 39:51Speaker 3: I mean, you know, somebody posted the other day, you know,
- 39:54Speaker 3: five years ago today we were told to stand six
- 39:56Speaker 3: feet apart, a kind of which those times came back
- 39:58Speaker 3: for a couple.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Of minutes a day, you know.
- 40:00Speaker 3: So it's it's there's it's it's been such a whirlwind
- 40:04Speaker 3: and everybody was a different age just five years ago
- 40:07Speaker 3: and then to come out of it, it is pretty
- 40:10Speaker 3: fascinating to see how people have adapted and changed. And
- 40:14Speaker 3: I just I'm constantly you know with my kids, like
- 40:18Speaker 3: when you're talking to me, look me in the eye.
- 40:19Speaker 3: And I feel like the phones and social media and
- 40:22Speaker 3: people just swiping left and right and scrolling up and down,
- 40:25Speaker 3: it's all we do where it takes away from face
- 40:26Speaker 3: to face conversations and we need more of that. And
- 40:28Speaker 3: to get to your point about the seventeen year olds
- 40:30Speaker 3: making the college decisions, it's big boys stuff. Man, you
- 40:33Speaker 3: got it you and there's there's no no other way.
- 40:37Speaker 4: Than than looking in the eye. Uh.
- 40:40Speaker 3: And I still say brushing your teeth every day in
- 40:43Speaker 3: the morning, like, look at yourself in the mirror. You're
- 40:44Speaker 3: happy with what you got because that's the that's how
- 40:47Speaker 3: you start your day. And yeah, it's a lot, but
- 40:50Speaker 3: as long as you take them on uh face first,
- 40:54Speaker 3: I say all the time, you're gonna be better off
- 40:56Speaker 3: because it's one giant step you don't realize you're taking,
- 40:59Speaker 3: but it's only to help you as you know, we
- 41:01Speaker 3: get older and you got to make more decisions. You
- 41:04Speaker 3: learn a lot about yourself in those times, and it's
- 41:07Speaker 3: part of growing up.
- 41:09Speaker 1: I so it's it's so funny because, uh, you say,
- 41:13Speaker 1: it's a big boy decision. I'm driving home with him
- 41:16Speaker 1: yesterday from State College and I so want to I
- 41:21Speaker 1: said to him, I'm not going to say anything. This
- 41:26Speaker 1: has to be your decision. I would love to be
- 41:30Speaker 1: making the decision for him right now. I would love
- 41:33Speaker 1: to tell him exactly what to do and exactly why
- 41:36Speaker 1: he should do it, and exactly one of the most
- 41:39Speaker 1: important reasons to do exactly what I think he should do.
- 41:42Speaker 1: I can't say a fucking word, and it's fucking driving
- 41:45Speaker 1: me nuts, because simon, you know, I want to tell
- 41:49Speaker 1: people what to do.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Huh Yeah.
- 41:52Speaker 5: You gotta let him make his own path, though, and
- 41:53Speaker 5: you know, make the right and wrong decisions. And like
- 41:55Speaker 5: you just said, whenever school he chooses, you know the deal, Chett,
- 41:59Speaker 5: he might hit you up in a year. And like,
- 42:00Speaker 5: I fucking hate this place. I want to come home.
- 42:03Speaker 5: I want to come back to a different school. And
- 42:04Speaker 5: that's just the way it is with college. And you know,
- 42:07Speaker 5: I know plenty of people that you know, I had
- 42:10Speaker 5: a weird run where like people I knew were graduating,
- 42:13Speaker 5: we went through that major recession eight and nine, and
- 42:16Speaker 5: you know, talking to those people that basically went through
- 42:19Speaker 5: the shit, they're way off better now than people that
- 42:22Speaker 5: graduated in twenty twelve, twenty thirteen that never experienced that low,
- 42:25Speaker 5: that survival. You know, I do think it's weird to
- 42:28Speaker 5: even talk about, but I do think a big part
- 42:30Speaker 5: of life is failing. Like how you deal with failure
- 42:33Speaker 5: really is all it is. Like I know plenty of
- 42:35Speaker 5: guys who failed kind of well was me, and gave
- 42:39Speaker 5: up in life and they kind of tried to wall
- 42:40Speaker 5: the rest of your life. I know other guys who
- 42:41Speaker 5: failed and have gone on to do incredible things because
- 42:44Speaker 5: they pushed through adversity.
- 42:45Speaker 2: So I'm with you, Chad.
- 42:47Speaker 5: It's it's a tough decision when he's making right now,
- 42:49Speaker 5: but it's like one of a thousand tough decisions he's
- 42:53Speaker 5: about to make going forward. And that's the craziest part.
- 42:55Speaker 5: Once you got out of high school, it's like you're
- 42:57Speaker 5: done with the kid bullshit.
- 42:58Speaker 4: Man.
- 42:58Speaker 5: Every decision you make is and made decision on your
- 43:00Speaker 5: life going forward, So that that's tough.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Look, Stanford went from playing in the Rose Bowl to
- 43:06Speaker 1: being out of work within a year and now he's
- 43:11Speaker 1: on college game day, right, Like that is a freaking journey, Stanford.
- 43:17Speaker 1: When you're on game day, everyone seems to just stop
- 43:23Speaker 1: when Nick Saban is talking. Like I thought he was
- 43:27Speaker 1: a revelation on game day and the McAfee Sabin interplay
- 43:32Speaker 1: is amazing. But what is it like with Saban on
- 43:37Speaker 1: set in production meetings? Like what do you glean when
- 43:41Speaker 1: you're listening to him talk, because he's he captures something
- 43:46Speaker 1: that is really sort of profound. Whenever he's talking about
- 43:50Speaker 1: college football.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Well, there's a lot of pieces.
- 43:54Speaker 3: First thing is experienced, like he's experienced so much and failing.
- 43:58Speaker 3: He talks about his failures all the time and how
- 44:01Speaker 3: he responded to him in his support system. But he's
- 44:05Speaker 3: just so smart man god like because he's you know,
- 44:09Speaker 3: whether it's whether it's recruiting the best players in the
- 44:11Speaker 3: country or being in the biggest situations of a national
- 44:14Speaker 3: championship game. Uh, and the way he goes about things
- 44:19Speaker 3: like everything's just thought out and and he doesn't he
- 44:23Speaker 3: doesn't jump the gun on anything.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Uh.
- 44:26Speaker 3: He always has something in his pocket to give you.
- 44:29Speaker 3: And you know this year, like first time I think
- 44:33Speaker 3: we're together was was Ireland, and you know he's you know,
- 44:38Speaker 3: milling around and he's doing his thing and you know
- 44:40Speaker 3: he's got the computer going and you know he's got
- 44:43Speaker 3: the glasses and you know it's like, hey, you know, coach,
- 44:46Speaker 3: I'm you know whatever, and I'm here whatever you need.
- 44:50Speaker 3: And you know, it's it's a process of you know,
- 44:53Speaker 3: it's fucking Nick Saban man. Like he's got an army
- 44:57Speaker 3: of ways he does things, and you know he's got
- 45:02Speaker 3: a he's got a circle that's pretty pretty strong, and
- 45:06Speaker 3: not anybody who's just jumping in that circle.
- 45:08Speaker 4: So there's a sense of trust.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Uh, there's calls that you're on as far as the
- 45:12Speaker 3: show where hey, I'm bringing this to the table.
- 45:15Speaker 4: But the one thing.
- 45:16Speaker 3: That was just eye open and I found myself like
- 45:19Speaker 3: anytime he talks, it's just it's silent, whether we're in
- 45:23Speaker 3: the conference room, whether we're on a zoom, and I'm
- 45:26Speaker 3: just constantly just taking notes, uh, writing everything down because again,
- 45:30Speaker 3: it's so thought out, it's so smart, and it's super
- 45:34Speaker 3: interesting and his stories are.
- 45:37Speaker 4: Just out of this world.
- 45:39Speaker 3: He had us to his house when we went to
- 45:40Speaker 3: game day in Tuscaloosa. We just sat around dinner table
- 45:43Speaker 3: and he just told story like it was amazing, from
- 45:46Speaker 3: his his rise and coaching to try and recruit players
- 45:50Speaker 3: to losing players best players he lost, like just incredible.
- 45:54Speaker 3: And then for him to come on the air and
- 45:56Speaker 3: and and we had plenty of back and forth where
- 45:59Speaker 3: we really had fun.
- 46:00Speaker 4: And and then I was like, you know, you.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Talk to an older person, You're like, are they really
- 46:05Speaker 3: listening to me? And then you know, we had the
- 46:08Speaker 3: exchange at Cow where I was talking about I dated
- 46:10Speaker 3: a girl from cal and that literally was from a
- 46:12Speaker 3: five minute conversation in the middle of the Cow hotel
- 46:14Speaker 3: the night before when he was like, you ever come
- 46:17Speaker 3: over here and hang out when you're at Stanford. I
- 46:19Speaker 3: was like, yeah, my girlfriend actually here. I was here
- 46:21Speaker 3: a lot. And from that he took it the next
- 46:24Speaker 3: morning when I took my shot at the Cow fans
- 46:28Speaker 3: and we have great relationship. We sat next so like
- 46:31Speaker 3: that playoff thing was nuts, Like we didn't notre name
- 46:34Speaker 3: Friday night, and we were at Columbus the next morning
- 46:38Speaker 3: for game day.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Then we did Orange Bowl.
- 46:40Speaker 3: They flew us to the Cotton Bowl and I'm on
- 46:44Speaker 3: a private jet sitting next to the next sabe and
- 46:47Speaker 3: watching the end of the Orange Bowl and I'm like,
- 46:50Speaker 3: somebody please take a picture of this, and like having
- 46:53Speaker 3: coffee with the next morning, getting ready for the Combosh.
- 46:56Speaker 4: I'm like, dude, we'll never forget that night at for
- 46:58Speaker 4: as long as we live.
- 47:00Speaker 3: Watching like Nixon losing his mind on quarterback play, like
- 47:03Speaker 3: the game's getting tight, throwing the ball away, you're hold
- 47:05Speaker 3: on the ball too long, Like him being a fan
- 47:08Speaker 3: watching the game's just a real person on the there too,
- 47:11Speaker 3: which you never saw, you know, at the press conferences,
- 47:14Speaker 3: and him going off on his players and the tangents
- 47:16Speaker 3: on link Kiffen when he was assistant coach, like it's
- 47:20Speaker 3: been really really cool, and he's just an unbelievable, unbelievable person.
- 47:26Speaker 1: People watching game day, people watching Sports Center with you
- 47:31Speaker 1: and Scott. Those will never be the things. The on
- 47:35Speaker 1: air things are never the things that you're going to
- 47:38Speaker 1: remember from any of your highlights. It's always going to
- 47:43Speaker 1: be the shit that happens behind the scenes out of
- 47:47Speaker 1: all of it, is going to be private jet watching
- 47:49Speaker 1: the end of an Orange Bowl.
- 47:50Speaker 4: That was like the extreme yep.
- 47:53Speaker 1: That's also what makes this business so much fun is
- 47:56Speaker 1: like these moments that you capture that are completely off camera.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Yep.
- 48:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:02Speaker 3: And and going back to that point Chad about like
- 48:05Speaker 3: being part of the process and Simon talking about these
- 48:08Speaker 3: decisions and how they get bigger and bigger, Like, you know,
- 48:11Speaker 3: I don't have a job, and I'm trying to get
- 48:13Speaker 3: like figured out I had a communications degree. Hey, let's
- 48:15Speaker 3: try and pursue this. And like two weeks in to
- 48:20Speaker 3: get a part time job as a production assistant at
- 48:22Speaker 3: ESPN Radio. I'm like, all right, well, I'm not gonna
- 48:24Speaker 3: make a lot of money, but you know what, when
- 48:27Speaker 3: I hear you know, get get a Friday night or
- 48:29Speaker 3: Saturday night, we're out with the guys and the boys
- 48:31Speaker 3: and we're b yessing and there bitching about having to
- 48:34Speaker 3: you know, go back to cutting lawns and everything. Like
- 48:36Speaker 3: I was super fired up to go to work every
- 48:38Speaker 3: single day, Like I'm watching games and cutting highlights and
- 48:42Speaker 3: you know, trying to get put on one of the
- 48:45Speaker 3: regular shows, uh, to bring content to that. Like I
- 48:48Speaker 3: could care less about what I was making, but I
- 48:52Speaker 3: was fired up to go to work every single day.
- 48:55Speaker 3: And that's another choice you make, Like you want to
- 48:58Speaker 3: be happy, and you know there's different you know, money's
- 49:01Speaker 3: not everything all the time. But like I said, looking
- 49:04Speaker 3: in that mayor brush your teeth every morning. If you're
- 49:06Speaker 3: happy with that person, go for it. And if you're not,
- 49:08Speaker 3: you got to do something about it. But that's things
- 49:11Speaker 3: and decisions you got to make.
- 49:13Speaker 1: How do you manage now, Simon and I did with
- 49:15Speaker 1: this all the time sports betting content from the time
- 49:19Speaker 1: you and I started doing it, you know, two thousand
- 49:23Speaker 1: and eleven twelve thirteen, when we were doing the shows together.
- 49:28Speaker 1: I was coming on with you and Scott and Ryan too.
- 49:32Speaker 1: Now has evolved so aggressively that your front and center
- 49:37Speaker 1: with so much of it, and some of the highest
- 49:39Speaker 1: profile shows on television forget about just sports television, but
- 49:44Speaker 1: like Game Day and Sports Center with SVP, like those
- 49:50Speaker 1: are massive shows. Right. How do you now manage people
- 49:56Speaker 1: coming after you for sports betting when you're wrong? How
- 50:00Speaker 1: has that changed? How has the conversation changed as all
- 50:05Speaker 1: of this has evolved?
- 50:07Speaker 4: Huh? Well, no one, no one.
- 50:11Speaker 3: No one says thank you when you win or congrats
- 50:14Speaker 3: like no, like no, it's silence. It's silence. And it
- 50:17Speaker 3: actually helped me last year. I think I was under
- 50:21Speaker 3: like eight or ten under five hundred last year on
- 50:24Speaker 3: game day. And it took me like two weeks where
- 50:28Speaker 3: I was like, Uh, this social media thing, you can
- 50:30Speaker 3: have it, Like I'm and my rule number one is
- 50:33Speaker 3: like now we're gonna be in March madness. Like the
- 50:36Speaker 3: last thing I'm doing while these games are going on
- 50:39Speaker 3: is going on social media. Like I cannot, like just
- 50:43Speaker 3: to grown in negativity a tweet that somebody sends that
- 50:46Speaker 3: they're never ever gonna say to your face in person. Never,
- 50:50Speaker 3: They'll never, they'll never do it, but they'll hide behind
- 50:52Speaker 3: their screen name and write whatever.
- 50:55Speaker 4: They want to you. So that actually helped.
- 50:58Speaker 3: Me because I was I mean, I talked to plenty
- 51:00Speaker 3: of people and they live by it like they do it.
- 51:02Speaker 3: I mean I'm on uh set with other Sports Center
- 51:05Speaker 3: shows and and like we go to break at boom,
- 51:08Speaker 3: they're checking their phone to see what people are saying
- 51:09Speaker 3: about what they just said about their team or their
- 51:11Speaker 3: player or their coach whatever. Like I don't, I don't
- 51:15Speaker 3: need that because guys do it when they wake up
- 51:17Speaker 3: in the morning and they check and you're on TV.
- 51:19Speaker 3: No one's saying no, no one's saying anything good.
- 51:21Speaker 4: They're not.
- 51:22Speaker 3: They're just they're picking apart what you're saying. And I
- 51:24Speaker 3: think that totally messages with people's heads because they read
- 51:27Speaker 3: it and and they act like that those aren't the
- 51:31Speaker 3: only people watching the show, you know what I mean,
- 51:33Speaker 3: Like we're you know TV. There's still plenty of people
- 51:36Speaker 3: that are watching the TV and aren't on social media.
- 51:39Speaker 3: So having a bad year picking games actually was the
- 51:43Speaker 3: best thing because it made me not go on it, Like,
- 51:45Speaker 3: it made me focus more on watching tape and watching
- 51:48Speaker 3: games and reading, which I think is still a huge part.
- 51:53Speaker 3: I'm still a guy that prints out NCAA tournament capsules
- 51:56Speaker 3: on every team, reads those and goes through with a highlighter.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Like That's what I'm doing my time. I'm not going
- 52:02Speaker 3: on and seeing what somebody's saying or listening to this breakdown.
- 52:06Speaker 3: Like I got my own way of going about things.
- 52:09Speaker 3: It's been super successful and I'm gonna stick to it.
- 52:12Speaker 3: But this day and age, it's really really hard for
- 52:14Speaker 3: people to put their phones down.
- 52:15Speaker 4: Man.
- 52:16Speaker 3: And like I said, the gambling, Twitter, gambling, social media,
- 52:21Speaker 3: there's never congratulations on there, So don't don't do it
- 52:24Speaker 3: because you think you're gonna get that. It's just like
- 52:27Speaker 3: starting the biggest sports media when you think you're gonna
- 52:29Speaker 3: make money, because you're not gonna You're.
- 52:30Speaker 4: Not gonna do that.
- 52:32Speaker 3: So like again, it's been a blessing in disguise. But
- 52:35Speaker 3: the social media thing, I mean, you guys deal with
- 52:37Speaker 3: it constantly. It's it's just thankfleul ultimate thankless job because
- 52:42Speaker 3: you know we'll get in March madness and it's like,
- 52:45Speaker 3: all right, I picked the upset and it's like, okay,
- 52:47Speaker 3: as soon as I picked the upset, the team that
- 52:50Speaker 3: I'm picking again Steph fan base thinks their team sucks
- 52:54Speaker 3: and like a lot of times I'll have had that team,
- 52:57Speaker 3: like the last three games, it's like, where were you
- 53:00Speaker 3: last three games when we just hit we just hit
- 53:02Speaker 3: three in a row on your team. I just don't
- 53:04Speaker 3: like the matchup. I'm sorry, I don't. I don't hate
- 53:06Speaker 3: your team. And then to go to all these colleges
- 53:08Speaker 3: with game day and get the interactions with people is
- 53:12Speaker 3: just hilarious because then it's like, oh, you know, really
- 53:16Speaker 3: enjoy your work this and it's like, oh, you know,
- 53:19Speaker 3: face to face conversations are are pretty real and there
- 53:22Speaker 3: is something so it's it's it's a different world that
- 53:27Speaker 3: like as you said, Chad than when we started, and
- 53:31Speaker 3: I just say be careful like it not not don't
- 53:33Speaker 3: don't go, Scott says all the time. Twitter is not
- 53:36Speaker 3: the place to go for positive feedback. It's pretty simple
- 53:40Speaker 3: and you know, use it, use it as you do,
- 53:43Speaker 3: and use it to your advantage because there are some
- 53:45Speaker 3: really good things on there and connected with people they
- 53:48Speaker 3: haven't seen a while or are checking out or reading
- 53:50Speaker 3: an article.
- 53:51Speaker 4: There's plenty of good stuff.
