- 0:04Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Black. Randy Black. He's a troublemaker. Welcome back to Randy Unscripted. I'm your host, Randy Black, and thank you for joining me for day 20 of napod promo twenty twenty five,
- 0:19national podcast post month. The goal is 30 episodes
- 0:23in thirty days,
- 0:25and we're in the home stretch on this month long challenge.
- 0:28And today,
- 0:29I've pulled out a topic that I've thought about for a while so much so that I wrote about it on my website not that long ago.
- 0:37And, honestly, the response I got when I shared it out with people on social media,
- 0:41I found that
- 0:43I wasn't alone in feeling the way I did based on the blog. So today,
- 0:49we're gonna talk
- 0:50about empathy.
- 0:52Not the buzzword,
- 0:54not the feel good sentiment,
- 0:56but the real lived out, roll up your sleeves kind of empathy that our country desperately needs right now.
- 1:04If you scroll through the news, if you
- 1:07take the time and open social media,
- 1:09walk through a school, or sit down in a community meeting, you can feel it.
- 1:14Empathy feels like it's slipping away.
- 1:17We are quicker to react,
- 1:19slower to listen,
- 1:21and we're more isolated than ever despite being hyperconnected
- 1:25digitally.
- 1:27So I wanna spend this episode exploring three things.
- 1:30The first is what empathy really is and why it feels like we're facing a crisis.
- 1:35Second is how this lack of empathy is showing up in everyday life, in our culture, in our classrooms, and in our technology.
- 1:43And third,
- 1:45what we can actually do about it.
- 1:47Real steps
- 1:49right now.
- 1:51So when we talk about empathy,
- 1:54we're talking about something that's deeper than sympathy.
- 1:58Sympathy says, I feel bad for you.
- 2:02Empathy says,
- 2:03I may not have lived your exact situation,
- 2:06but I'm going to sit with you in it. I'm going to try to understand you.
- 2:12In my blog post,
- 2:14I referenced a concern that keeps coming up in research circles,
- 2:19and that's that empathy levels, especially among young adults, have been steadily declining
- 2:24the past couple of decades.
- 2:27College students today show significantly lower emotional understanding
- 2:31and perspective taking than students from the nineteen eighties and the nineteen nineties.
- 2:36That's not an opinion.
- 2:38That's actual statistical data.
- 2:41But you don't need to need to study there to see the trend.
- 2:45You can look around you and see it.
- 2:48People interrupt each other faster.
- 2:50Conversations
- 2:51are more about broadcasting than they are about listening.
- 2:56The moment someone disagrees with us,
- 2:58we label them as the enemy instead of a fellow human being who simply sees the world differently.
- 3:06Scripture from the Bible has a better way to say it. Romans twelve fifteen says, rejoice with them that do rejoice
- 3:13and weep with them that weep.
- 3:17That right there is empathy.
- 3:20It's entering someone else's joy and someone else's sorrow
- 3:25as though it were your own.
- 3:30But in America today,
- 3:32we've created these little silos,
- 3:34political silos, cultural silos, generational silos,
- 3:38And in those silos,
- 3:40empathy
- 3:42atrophies.
- 3:44When we don't regularly interact with people who think differently than we do,
- 3:49we we lose the ability
- 3:52to understand them.
- 3:54And, honestly,
- 3:56that's where the crisis is.
- 3:58Not that we don't care about people,
- 4:00but that we've forgotten
- 4:02how to.
- 4:05Let's talk about this.
- 4:07I would talk about where this is really happening because it's not abstract.
- 4:11You see it in real tangible places today in our society.
- 4:17Let's start in education.
- 4:19I've seen students become more isolated.
- 4:22They may be surrounded by peers every day,
- 4:25but the conversations
- 4:26are shorter,
- 4:27they're shallower,
- 4:29and they're often filtered through screens.
- 4:33Conflict resolution skills aren't being developed the way that they used to be.
- 4:37And when empathy is missing,
- 4:39everything becomes a bigger deal than it actually needs to be.
- 4:45In technology,
- 4:46we've created an environment where speed is valued more than understanding.
- 4:50Social media gives everyone an immediate voice,
- 4:54but it doesn't train anyone
- 4:56to listen.
- 4:58You can type a comment in a second. You can post an opinion without ever seeing the person you're responding to.
- 5:04You don't see their face, their body language,
- 5:07or their hurt.
- 5:09As a technology specialist,
- 5:11I see the beauty
- 5:12and the danger.
- 5:14Tech can connect us in powerful ways,
- 5:17but it can also flatten people into avatars,
- 5:20and empathy needs humans,
- 5:23not profiles.
- 5:24In everyday culture,
- 5:26we have normalized outrage.
- 5:29Outrage is rewarded with likes and shares.
- 5:32Outrage gets visibility.
- 5:35Outrage drives algorithms.
- 5:37But empathy,
- 5:40empathy isn't loud.
- 5:42Empathy
- 5:43isn't click worthy.
- 5:44Empathy takes time.
- 5:47We are losing the slow practice of sitting with someone, asking questions,
- 5:51and not assuming the worst motivations in others.
- 5:55Those skills are disappearing.
- 5:58And the result,
- 6:00we talk
- 6:01past one another.
- 6:02We
- 6:03assume we already know someone's story without ever hearing it.
- 6:08We dehumanize people who disagree with us.
- 6:12And if empathy isn't brought back into the center,
- 6:15that trajectory
- 6:16doesn't get better.
- 6:18It gets worse.
- 6:22But here's the good news.
- 6:24Empathy
- 6:25isn't dead.
- 6:27It's just neglected,
- 6:29and neglected things
- 6:31can be rebuilt.
- 6:34In my blog post,
- 6:35I shared a few practices, and I wanna expand on those now.
- 6:39The first is to listen intentionally,
- 6:42not the waiting for your turn to talk kinda listening,
- 6:46real listening.
- 6:48One of the best empathy builders is to ask a follow-up question before offering your own opinion.
- 6:54Try it this week.
- 6:56Ask someone,
- 6:57tell me more about that.
- 6:59It's amazing what happens.
- 7:03Second thing is that we need to seek out conversations with people who differ from us.
- 7:08Different backgrounds,
- 7:11different experiences,
- 7:13different viewpoints.
- 7:15The more we diversify our conversations,
- 7:18the more naturally empathy begins to grow.
- 7:24Third, we need to use technology to foster connection,
- 7:28not to replace it.
- 7:32Video calls
- 7:33instead of text arguments,
- 7:35voice messages instead of a quick reaction,
- 7:39tools that show faces
- 7:41and let you hear voices help anchor empathy
- 7:44because they rehumanize
- 7:46the person who's on the other end.
- 7:50Our fourth thing is to slow down.
- 7:53Empathy cannot be rushed.
- 7:56It requires a moment of stillness,
- 7:58a moment to consider
- 8:00what might this person be feeling.
- 8:03Where might they be coming from?
- 8:08The last thing is to bear someone's burden.
- 8:11And you know me. I'm a Christian, I'm a pull out some scripture. So let's go with Galatians chapter six verse two where it says,
- 8:17bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.
- 8:23That doesn't always mean solving someone's problem.
- 8:26Sometimes it just means showing up,
- 8:29staying present,
- 8:30and offering your time to them.
- 8:34Empathy is built in small simple acts.
- 8:37One conversation,
- 8:39one moment,
- 8:41one choice at a time.
- 8:44And if enough of us do that,
- 8:47I think we can turn this thing around.
- 8:52As we wrap up episode 20 of our napod promo twenty twenty five series here on Randy unscripted,
- 8:58here's my challenge for you this week.
- 9:01Choose one person in your life and practice intentional empathy with them.
- 9:07Listen more closely.
- 9:09Ask a deeper question.
- 9:11Slow down
- 9:12and be present.
- 9:15Empathy is a skill.
- 9:17It grows with practice.
- 9:19And if we want a stronger, kinder, more understanding America,
- 9:23it starts with each of us choosing to step into someone else's story.
- 9:29If this episode resonated with you, I'd love to hear about it. Share a story with me. Maybe a moment this week when you practiced empathy
- 9:37or showed someone in or someone else showed empathy towards you. Those stories matter.
- 9:43Thank you for taking the time to listen here today on Randy unscripted.
- 9:47I'll be back tomorrow for day 21 of napod promo twenty twenty five, national podcast post month,

- 9:57Until then, take care, and take time to understand someone
- 10:01a little better today.
