- 0:30Speaker 2: on all things hip hop music and culture that happened
- 0:34Speaker 2: throughout the weeks. But as you can see, this is
- 0:38Speaker 2: a bonus episode.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And as you know, if.
- 0:41Speaker 2: You've been paying attention this year, really just to just
- 0:44Speaker 2: start with this year twenty twenty five, and we've had
- 0:48Speaker 2: some big moments, right. We had Kendrick at the super Bowl.
- 0:51Speaker 2: We had this Clips album go crazy. Uh, we had
- 0:55Speaker 2: even probably the first movie review situation here on the channel.
- 1:01Speaker 2: But every time I need to go there, I had
- 1:04Speaker 2: to throw up the OC signal. OC is head and
- 1:08Speaker 2: we have to bring him in to contextualize this moment
- 1:13Speaker 2: in hip hop.
- 1:14Speaker 1: OC was good many.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Anything, good man, Thank you for having me, Man, thank
- 1:18Speaker 3: you for having me.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Man. Can't wait to you know, get into it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Legend has it, legend has it? You know?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, man, dope dope stuff real quick, A little bit
- 1:29Speaker 2: of you know, homekeeping housekeeping or whatever. Uh, while on
- 1:33Speaker 2: this channel here hip Hop Now Politic, I mean hip
- 1:36Speaker 2: Hop Now Politic.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Well, oh, I took it back.
- 1:39Speaker 2: If you've been around long enough to know what that was,
- 1:42Speaker 2: put in a comment section below. But now hip Hop
- 1:46Speaker 2: Now podcast here on YouTube was something that came about
- 1:50Speaker 2: around the time I was like, I think I'm done.
- 1:53Speaker 2: You know, I could go and work. I'll be on
- 1:55Speaker 2: everybody else podcast, but I'm good. And then fifty years
- 2:00Speaker 2: of hip hop was upon us, and I was like, well, damn,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I can't end it before the fiftieth year of hip hop.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So I finally started a YouTube channel.
- 2:09Speaker 2: As most of you may know, shout out to the
- 2:12Speaker 2: audio listeners who've been listening for years at this point,
- 2:16Speaker 2: excuse me, next year, we'll be ten years to be
- 2:19Speaker 2: honest of this specific podcast in audio form. But I
- 2:25Speaker 2: did the video joint. I was like, okay, you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: get some subscribers up. And last year I did a
- 2:32Speaker 2: nice push to go from like I think I had
- 2:34Speaker 2: like two hundred subscribers or something like that, and this
- 2:37Speaker 2: was just over time to say, yo, by the end
- 2:40Speaker 2: of the year, let's get to one thousand. Well we
- 2:43Speaker 2: wound up hitting five thousand, and that was crazy in itself,
- 2:48Speaker 2: and then January came and I'm like, yeah, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: it's twenty twenty five, we're gonna hit ten thousand.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Well, we hit ten thousand and THEMN near January.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It was like, I let me push it back to
- 3:02Speaker 2: a number that you know, I think it will take
- 3:05Speaker 2: some time. I don't have to pitch every day or
- 3:07Speaker 2: every week. And the homioch was like, Yo, you're gonna
- 3:11Speaker 2: have to go up on that number, man, because the
- 3:13Speaker 2: momentum and I was like, okay, twenty five k well today,
- 3:18Speaker 2: ladies and gentlemen. By the end of twenty twenty five,
- 3:21Speaker 2: we are at exactly twenty five thousand subs right here
- 3:25Speaker 2: on YouTube. I appreciate everybody who's checked out the show,
- 3:29Speaker 2: whether you came here for the shorts, the content like
- 3:33Speaker 2: this content were about to do here, found it through
- 3:37Speaker 2: social media, somebody posted it and read it. Wherever you
- 3:41Speaker 2: may have found this pot classic cast. I'm glad you
- 3:43Speaker 2: found it, and we're just gonna do keep doing what
- 3:46Speaker 2: we always do. You know, we ain't talking about Diddy
- 3:49Speaker 2: unless you want me to. But we try to keep
- 3:52Speaker 2: it to the music and the culture because at the
- 3:55Speaker 2: end of the day. That's why we're here. So and
- 3:57Speaker 2: that's why the homie OK is here. So you saw
- 4:01Speaker 2: the title, you saw the artwork. You know what's happened
- 4:07Speaker 2: throughout twenty twenty five with Mass Appeal when they basically
- 4:13Speaker 2: announced a while ago that they'd be doing this legend
- 4:17Speaker 2: hazard series seven icons, right, and it was all mysterious
- 4:22Speaker 2: and all that good stuff. And we had seven projects dropped,
- 4:26Speaker 2: the most recent project being NAS and DJ premiers Light
- 4:31Speaker 2: Years Now. If you follow this channel or you're listen
- 4:34Speaker 2: on audio phone, you know already dropped my review of.
- 4:39Speaker 1: The of the album.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I stayed up late at night to listen, and really
- 4:45Speaker 2: I had to sit on that. I barely sit there.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I had to sit down. It was like, let me
- 4:50Speaker 2: just listen, but you know, my thoughts. But we do
- 4:55Speaker 2: have our care as a guest, and me and him
- 4:57Speaker 2: talk about these joints. You know, we text back back
- 5:00Speaker 2: and forth. So I kind of wanted to get your
- 5:04Speaker 2: thoughts on this album that we've waited for so long.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Now it's DJ Premier Light Is.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, man, my my thoughts, impressions. I've been listening to
- 5:17Speaker 3: it since it dropped Friday. Listen to it Friday listen
- 5:25Speaker 3: to it Saturday. I've been listening to it over the weekend,
- 5:29Speaker 3: got the drive around listening to it as well. You know,
- 5:32Speaker 3: the good the good card test, you know what I mean.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure people are familiar with that, the card test.
- 5:39Speaker 4: And yeah, man, my my thoughts.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Walking away from the album and even going back to
- 5:45Speaker 3: it when I want to listen to it, is that
- 5:48Speaker 3: it's a it's a good album. The album is is good.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I think the key word for me is modest. It's
- 5:59Speaker 3: a it's a good, modest album. I know, you know
- 6:04Speaker 3: that the younger listeners, they're likely gonna interpret that into mid,
- 6:10Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Like, Yo, just cut to
- 6:12Speaker 3: what it is, man, you know what I mean.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Just say that is mid, so we can move on
- 6:16Speaker 4: and you know, get to.
- 6:18Speaker 3: The next thing. But I think that that's there's more
- 6:23Speaker 3: there for me to just say that it's mid. A
- 6:27Speaker 3: typical reaction could be that, but I think it's a
- 6:29Speaker 3: little more than just mid. It's a modest, good, good album.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I thought the concepts that Nas brought to the table,
- 6:42Speaker 3: his execution, delivery of the rhymes, I thought that that
- 6:45Speaker 3: was just on point what we expect from Nas, of course,
- 6:51Speaker 3: but you know, some new things, some things I expect
- 6:56Speaker 3: him to be able to deliver on that, but what
- 6:58Speaker 3: he actually delivered, I didn't know I was gonna get.
- 7:01Speaker 3: And yeah, I'm happy with that. Like writers, had no
- 7:04Speaker 3: idea I was gonna do something like that, and great,
- 7:09Speaker 3: great song. Bouquet another one of those where I didn't
- 7:15Speaker 3: expect it.
- 7:17Speaker 4: To be like that.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I know he does things where he's paying homage, but
- 7:22Speaker 3: I didn't. I was not expecting that he was just
- 7:25Speaker 3: gonna focus on, you know, the women and hip hop.
- 7:29Speaker 3: So I really thought that that was a nice touch. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 3: so you know what makes it modest? I mean, I
- 7:40Speaker 3: know there's a lot of chatter online, so let's just
- 7:42Speaker 3: get straight to it.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I thought that the you know, the production from the Legend.
- 7:48Speaker 3: DJ Premiere, I thought he provided what, you know, what
- 7:56Speaker 3: he thought and what he wanted to contribute as far
- 7:59Speaker 3: as NAS's pocket, you know, but what what pocket he
- 8:04Speaker 3: wanted Nas to get into.
- 8:07Speaker 4: And I think that that was.
- 8:11Speaker 3: You know, it was it was efficient, But there are
- 8:15Speaker 3: things that you know, longtime listeners of their collaborations, it
- 8:22Speaker 3: just felt like some of those things may have been
- 8:25Speaker 3: i don't know, abandoned, and that might be too strong
- 8:27Speaker 3: of a word, but it was missing for me, you know.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I think that having listened over the years since what
- 8:39Speaker 3: their collaboration since Illmatic, I've always heard like a at
- 8:48Speaker 3: least like a bounce when it comes to the collaborations
- 8:53Speaker 3: that happened between NAS and Premiere and I. I didn't
- 9:00Speaker 3: really get that from this from this album. Definitely some
- 9:06Speaker 3: good songs, but that bounce that I get from Second Childhood,
- 9:11Speaker 3: that bounce that I get from NAS is like that
- 9:17Speaker 3: bounce that it's not really a bounce, but it's like
- 9:20Speaker 3: three pockets that they get into.
- 9:22Speaker 4: They get into the cinematic pocket.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Whereas I Gave You Power or New York State of Mind,
- 9:28Speaker 3: so that's like that cinematic pocket, but then they have
- 9:32Speaker 3: this bounce pocket where it's like represent and NAS is like,
- 9:38Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, it's it's just it's a
- 9:40Speaker 3: bounce to it.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Boom boom boom boom boom boom boom or you know,
- 9:48Speaker 5: Second Childhood boom boom boom boom b It's just it's
- 9:52Speaker 5: a bounce.
- 9:54Speaker 4: And I didn't I didn't get that from here, you know.
- 9:57Speaker 3: But it's all good, you know, and it's definitely you know,
- 10:02Speaker 3: my judgment or what I thought of the album is
- 10:05Speaker 3: gonna impact my ranking as far as all of these projects,
- 10:10Speaker 3: A part of Legend has it.
- 10:12Speaker 4: But yeah, overall, I thought it was good.
- 10:15Speaker 3: There were some things that I would have liked to
- 10:17Speaker 3: see but I didn't get.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Well, overall, it's good. It's good, moderate good hip hop.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree.
- 10:26Speaker 2: And you know, looking at the reactions on social media
- 10:30Speaker 2: or over reactions, which is typical, I've seen extremes go
- 10:37Speaker 2: from straight up whack to this is why NASA, NAS
- 10:42Speaker 2: and Premier are the goats, and there's just a lot
- 10:46Speaker 2: of infighting over something. I saw one dude say something
- 10:50Speaker 2: and I kind of addressed this in my review.
- 10:55Speaker 1: That you know, what do you want?
- 10:57Speaker 2: This is what Premier does and I strongly disagree, and
- 11:02Speaker 2: I said this in my review. You could have not
- 11:06Speaker 2: possibly been here in the nineties. You have to be
- 11:10Speaker 2: a robot on an alien because if you just listen
- 11:13Speaker 2: to the group Group Home album alone, nothing sounds the
- 11:19Speaker 2: same and it's all crazy. And you go to the
- 11:23Speaker 2: Gangstar catalog and you got some of the same things.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And then what he did with Big, what he did
- 11:29Speaker 2: with Jay what none of those things are predictable at all. Now,
- 11:35Speaker 2: one thing when credit and I don't think I said
- 11:37Speaker 2: this in my review I would give for May is.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I don't feel like these beats are predictable.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I just don't think, to O's point, that they're hitting
- 11:48Speaker 2: an expectation of not you know, I expect to beat
- 11:53Speaker 2: the sound like this or that or third like I said,
- 11:55Speaker 2: I've always said I didn't want, but more so an
- 11:58Speaker 2: expectation that it was going to be something crazy, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 2: like for example, the way New York state of Mind,
- 12:07Speaker 2: which is a it's an instant skip for me every
- 12:10Speaker 2: time at this point, but the way it sets up
- 12:15Speaker 2: it made you feel like, oh, part three, what they
- 12:19Speaker 2: did were part one and two. To ox point, you
- 12:22Speaker 2: get a certain vibe, you get a certain bounce to
- 12:25Speaker 2: it on the other two, and you got the Billy
- 12:29Speaker 2: Joe sample coming in and it's playing out and NAS done.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Already teed it up.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And not that the beat is necessarily whacked to me,
- 12:38Speaker 2: but it fell flat. It felt it didn't feel like
- 12:42Speaker 2: there are records on there that I'm like, like the time,
- 12:45Speaker 2: I think that's what it's called. Like when that hit,
- 12:47Speaker 2: I liked that joint, Like, okay, I like this. It
- 12:51Speaker 2: just didn't do that for me, So I think for
- 12:53Speaker 2: those who may feel some you know, on the side
- 12:57Speaker 2: of not liking it all it's whack whatever, I think
- 13:01Speaker 2: the anticipation and the expectations that they set forth that
- 13:06Speaker 2: you know, in a lot of ways it's difficult to
- 13:08Speaker 2: achieve when Nas is in his fifties and I think
- 13:11Speaker 2: Per is in his fifties. You know what I'm saying,
- 13:15Speaker 2: You don't know if that can be captured. But to
- 13:17Speaker 2: Odd's point, at the end of the day, it's just
- 13:20Speaker 2: a good album.
- 13:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 13:22Speaker 2: In general, I think I've seen more people say good
- 13:25Speaker 2: to great than people saying it's wax.
- 13:28Speaker 3: So yeah, that was I'm not going to go that far.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Yeah, because I knew that at first, you know, the
- 13:37Speaker 2: boom bap in me was like, man, what's this like?
- 13:39Speaker 1: On everything but Billy Joe.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Everything and on the second list and I was like, hem,
- 13:49Speaker 2: I ain't realize his first song was kind of crazy.
- 13:53Speaker 1: You know.
- 13:55Speaker 6: I agree, man, that was a great way to just
- 14:00Speaker 6: ribit the hardcore since illmatic like that, well, yo, what's
- 14:05Speaker 6: this like?
- 14:07Speaker 3: Right? So you know, the older gentleman, you know, grown man,
- 14:14Speaker 3: It's like, all right, I think I understand what this
- 14:18Speaker 3: is yeah, but the fifteen fourteen year old me, yeah, man,
- 14:26Speaker 3: what's this right?
- 14:28Speaker 1: What you mean now?
- 14:31Speaker 4: Cream?
- 14:31Speaker 1: What you're doing? Like I was on that with every song.
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's even even my wife married, Like one song was
- 14:39Speaker 2: playing a song I like, she't even give it a chance,
- 14:41Speaker 2: Like what is this?
- 14:42Speaker 1: I'm like, it's not nas is light like you gotta relax.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And yeah, yeah yeah, and it's you know, it's he
- 14:50Speaker 2: has a whole new flow.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Anyway, all right, y'all, So what we're going to.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Get into the seven projects that drop the rollout? This
- 15:03Speaker 2: was probably early summer when they mass Appeal started to
- 15:09Speaker 2: promote the fact that they were gonna roll out seven
- 15:14Speaker 2: projects because they were saying seven legends or seven icons
- 15:18Speaker 2: or something like that. Legend has it, And the rumors
- 15:21Speaker 2: started swirling. And then they started releasing you know, images
- 15:26Speaker 2: on their ig of like ghost Face and Big L
- 15:30Speaker 2: and Mob Deep, and you know, everybody was getting excited,
- 15:33Speaker 2: Oh what was about to happen? And then they were teasing,
- 15:39Speaker 2: which we come to find out was slick Rick. Then
- 15:42Speaker 2: they were teasing slick Rick, so that made it even crazier,
- 15:46Speaker 2: like what's gonna happen? And then they just came out
- 15:48Speaker 2: with it and said, you're gonna get seven albums from
- 15:52Speaker 2: these legendary artists, which are, for those who don't know,
- 15:56Speaker 2: slick Rick, Daylight, Soul, Ray Kwon, Go Big Al, Mob
- 16:02Speaker 2: Deep and Nas and DJ Premier. And we almost lost
- 16:07Speaker 2: it because it's like new albums, like from all of them.
- 16:11Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, The Mob Deep one. If
- 16:13Speaker 2: you watch the show, you already know the past three years.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I'm like, yo, that Mob that new Mob Deep. I
- 16:18Speaker 1: didn't know how.
- 16:20Speaker 2: I just heard having say one time and I was like,
- 16:24Speaker 2: he got something in the tuck. So but that moment
- 16:30Speaker 2: when the announcement came out, we knew who we would
- 16:35Speaker 2: get albums from, and we knew slick Rick was like
- 16:38Speaker 2: dropping and around the corner. What did you think about
- 16:41Speaker 2: just the idea of something like this that honestly has
- 16:44Speaker 2: never been done in hip hop?
- 16:47Speaker 3: I thought it was a great, a great idea, Like, Okay,
- 16:51Speaker 3: we got this, we got this.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Uh uh. This curation.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Of these seven seven albums different icons within hip hop
- 17:11Speaker 3: that definitely takes it to another level.
- 17:13Speaker 4: I mean, I remember with I Forget that with the
- 17:17Speaker 4: name of it was. I remember when boot Camp did
- 17:21Speaker 4: something similar.
- 17:22Speaker 3: When they had like their rebranding and reintroduction, when Sean
- 17:31Speaker 3: Price was like had the had the flag and was
- 17:34Speaker 3: leading the way that they had did something similar where
- 17:39Speaker 3: you know, Sean Price had an album, Smith and Western
- 17:42Speaker 3: had an album, and Buckshot and nine Wonder had an album.
- 17:48Speaker 3: So they did something right. I remember, Yeah, they did
- 17:51Speaker 3: something similar which which turned out really good. That was
- 17:56Speaker 3: that was great, but like it was all in camp
- 18:00Speaker 3: way as though with this, like it's it's different icons.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Everybody's not in the same camp. Have they done music together?
- 18:12Speaker 3: Are their influences you know slick Rick, ghost Face, Sure,
- 18:16Speaker 3: but it's not in camp. It's not like a Wu
- 18:19Speaker 3: Tang rollout or a boot camp rollout. So yeah, man,
- 18:24Speaker 3: I thought that that was a great idea and I
- 18:30Speaker 3: looked forward to it.
- 18:32Speaker 4: I ain't gonna stunt, I look forward to it, But
- 18:35Speaker 4: then I forgot I ain't even I ain't gonna hold
- 18:39Speaker 4: you y'all.
- 18:40Speaker 3: I look forward to it, forgot that it was happening,
- 18:45Speaker 3: and then slick Rick popped up in my timeline the video,
- 18:51Speaker 3: the short film, right, and that's what it all began
- 18:55Speaker 3: for me.
- 18:56Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, yeah, that's right.
- 18:57Speaker 3: They they doing this whole you know, Legend has it
- 19:02Speaker 3: this whole rollout and this is the first one. So yeah, man,
- 19:07Speaker 3: I thought a great idea, definitely was looking forward to it,
- 19:11Speaker 3: forgot about it, and then when slick Rick dropped product
- 19:15Speaker 3: that brought me right back and it's like, all right, yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I'm locked in.
- 19:18Speaker 4: I want to hear what was going on, what they
- 19:20Speaker 4: got going on.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I felt the same way.
- 19:24Speaker 2: I you know, even though I was covering it for
- 19:27Speaker 2: this podcast.
- 19:29Speaker 1: There was a.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Moment when they announced it where there was a certain
- 19:33Speaker 2: level of excitement and then for me there was a
- 19:36Speaker 2: little bit of caution because I was thinking, like, you know, okay,
- 19:41Speaker 2: Dave's not here, what is this.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Big l thing? You know, I want the mob deep,
- 19:47Speaker 1: but what is it?
- 19:50Speaker 2: I was kind of happy to see slick Rick was
- 19:52Speaker 2: a part of it, but I just didn't know. So
- 19:56Speaker 2: I just wanted to see what was going to happen
- 19:59Speaker 2: and we can get it right into the first one.
- 20:01Speaker 2: The first release was slick Rick's album Victory, which also
- 20:05Speaker 2: came with a film to a company, and the album
- 20:09Speaker 2: was the album the film.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Everything was essentially his.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Roots in London and hip hop and music there also
- 20:18Speaker 2: like it was a different look at slick Rick than
- 20:21Speaker 2: we were used to. But I heard the album first
- 20:25Speaker 2: and I reviewed the album on this channel, and I
- 20:28Speaker 2: did not like it. And part of it had to
- 20:32Speaker 2: do with small things like slick Rick having like one
- 20:35Speaker 2: verse on a song or two, you know what I'm saying,
- 20:39Speaker 2: or especially like when I was in a gym, I'm
- 20:41Speaker 2: like it was house music. I thought I hit a
- 20:43Speaker 2: wrong button. I'm like, hold on, what the oh, we're
- 20:46Speaker 2: still on slick Rick like and two of them at that,
- 20:54Speaker 2: And it just felt like for me, as a slick
- 20:58Speaker 2: Rick fan, he's absolutely giving me at least three albums,
- 21:02Speaker 2: because what is this his fifth album? So he only
- 21:06Speaker 2: has one that was bad to me that was behind Bars,
- 21:09Speaker 2: but that's because he was behind bars. The other obviously,
- 21:13Speaker 2: you know, the classic in his debut and the second
- 21:16Speaker 2: album I personally liked, and then artist storytelling was dope.
- 21:20Speaker 2: So this just felt like a halfway effort. But maybe
- 21:25Speaker 2: that's what the film was there for. And I felt
- 21:28Speaker 2: like the film helped a little bit with what we
- 21:31Speaker 2: were listening to.
- 21:33Speaker 4: I agree with you.
- 21:35Speaker 2: But you know, obviously off the first listen without needing
- 21:39Speaker 2: a visual, those were my thoughts when you first heard
- 21:42Speaker 2: the slick Wreck album Victory.
- 21:44Speaker 1: What did you think?
- 21:45Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 21:47Speaker 3: Actually, because I saw the film first, that helped me
- 21:51Speaker 3: with the listen. Okay, you know, so it I had
- 21:57Speaker 3: already was like trans to Okay, I'm getting some insight
- 22:04Speaker 3: as to you know, slick Rick the person, his upbringing,
- 22:10Speaker 3: and this album felt like a soundtrack to that. Now
- 22:19Speaker 3: you know, again we get into the fifteen.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Year old me. We'll, we'll, we'll get there.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Because you know, when the house music drops, it's like yo,
- 22:29Speaker 3: what's this?
- 22:32Speaker 4: You know?
- 22:33Speaker 3: But and the bigger scheme of things, if I think
- 22:36Speaker 3: macro right and the bigger scheme of things, it is
- 22:40Speaker 3: a part of you know, his what influences.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Him, So I could I could respect it. Am I
- 22:50Speaker 4: going to be listening to that like that? No? Am
- 22:55Speaker 4: I going to be listening to this album like that? No?
- 23:00Speaker 4: But when I think of it as like.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Content and just art, I thought, I think it's a
- 23:09Speaker 3: good offering as to you know, you know, you got
- 23:13Speaker 3: that meme, the memes that be on social media, like
- 23:17Speaker 3: you know, I'm gonna tell my my son or I'm
- 23:20Speaker 3: going to tell my my daughter that.
- 23:22Speaker 4: This was such and such.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Well, I think this is like a good companion piece
- 23:29Speaker 3: to that. You have his classics, but then you want
- 23:32Speaker 3: to get into you know, who Slickcrick is as a person.
- 23:36Speaker 4: It take I guess, a deeper dive. Then you got
- 23:39Speaker 4: this content to support that.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good way to put it, man, because
- 23:44Speaker 2: I feel like, you, like, having listened to the album first,
- 23:48Speaker 2: had my thoughts, and then when I watched the film
- 23:52Speaker 2: and obviously when they put out the video with him
- 23:54Speaker 2: and Nas, I was like, this brings a different like,
- 23:59Speaker 2: you know, I don't know, it makes me feel a
- 24:02Speaker 2: little bit different about the album, but it's for the
- 24:05Speaker 2: same reasons you mentioned. It's more so for you know, uh,
- 24:09Speaker 2: new fans and older fans to get a deeper look
- 24:13Speaker 2: at slick Rick. So then did some of the musical
- 24:16Speaker 2: choices make sense when you look at the film? You know,
- 24:20Speaker 2: but straight up open with the anticipation from you know,
- 24:24Speaker 2: Great Adventures of slick Rick and all of that, You're like,
- 24:27Speaker 2: where's the stories? Like, you know, like, but he is
- 24:32Speaker 2: the story and that's the whole you know, his.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Life is the story.
- 24:36Speaker 2: So after that then they started teasing it felt like
- 24:42Speaker 2: forever too. It felt like we was on slick Rick
- 24:46Speaker 2: for like a month, uh, and close to it, but
- 24:49Speaker 2: then all of a sudden, they start ramping up and
- 24:53Speaker 2: Ray Kwan's album drops, The Emperor's New Clothes. I reviewed
- 24:59Speaker 2: it on a channel. I thought it was a good album.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Even even after my review, I kind of just I
- 25:08Speaker 2: couldn't stop playing it.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I was playing it all the time.
- 25:11Speaker 2: The only my only hang up with the joint were
- 25:15Speaker 2: the skits, Like I felt like the first skit you
- 25:18Speaker 2: get on the album, which is like some gentlemen's club
- 25:23Speaker 2: kind of or country club kind of feel. I thought
- 25:26Speaker 2: that fit because of the title his status songs like
- 25:31Speaker 2: one Life, like, I felt like Ray Koran was just
- 25:34Speaker 2: establishing himself as you know, an emperor at this point,
- 25:38Speaker 2: like you know, I've graduated from corner to a boss
- 25:41Speaker 2: or now I'm at.
- 25:42Speaker 1: A you know, not a boss.
- 25:45Speaker 2: What would you say, I don't know, mogul status or
- 25:48Speaker 2: whatever with his businesses and everything. So I kind of
- 25:52Speaker 2: liked the album off of that vibe along with you know,
- 25:55Speaker 2: this was Ray and there was a lot of ghosts
- 25:57Speaker 2: on here and nas and stuff, but the skin it's like,
- 26:00Speaker 2: you know, Officer long Beard and just random headcut barbershop stuff.
- 26:05Speaker 2: It was like, come on, man, like what we're doing
- 26:08Speaker 2: is getting in a way, get it out of here.
- 26:12Speaker 2: You're a Ray Kwon fan, of course, and a Wu
- 26:15Speaker 2: Tang fan. When you heard this album, man, especially as
- 26:19Speaker 2: the second release in these seven albums, what was your thoughts?
- 26:25Speaker 4: I thought it was good. I thought it was good.
- 26:30Speaker 3: I got criticism for me. This album really doesn't get
- 26:41Speaker 3: started for me, unfortunately until like I don't know, I
- 26:48Speaker 3: think it's like five six songs, and yeah, like I
- 26:53Speaker 3: thought those songs were good. They were okay, you know,
- 26:59Speaker 3: i'd see what he was going for bangers, but as
- 27:04Speaker 3: far as things starting to be like intentional m I
- 27:09Speaker 3: felt like it didn't kick off until what is it?
- 27:13Speaker 4: I think it's called six hundred school, Oh what meth
- 27:19Speaker 4: and Ghosts.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I just it's like, now I'm getting into a
- 27:24Speaker 3: Ray Kwan album, like and maybe you know this is
- 27:30Speaker 3: the nostalgia goggles. But that is when it like felt
- 27:34Speaker 3: right like banger Epic Emperor's New Clothes like.
- 27:41Speaker 4: When that, but it was that one.
- 27:44Speaker 3: Like everything prior to it, it was okay. But I
- 27:49Speaker 3: feel like it starts to get chiseled right at that
- 27:54Speaker 3: six hundred and.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Then and then I can, you know, start.
- 27:57Speaker 3: To play it out and I think to your point,
- 28:00Speaker 3: the only criticism I would have is, you know, the skits,
- 28:04Speaker 3: and I think unfortunately with this and I know this
- 28:11Speaker 3: is this is gonna sound crazy, but it's like the
- 28:15Speaker 3: the the features from Ghosts, I felt like was overcooked.
- 28:21Speaker 3: And that's crazy because this is these are the same
- 28:26Speaker 3: people that may only built for Cuban links. But I
- 28:29Speaker 3: think what what made it feel overcooked was the the
- 28:39Speaker 3: song choices or the songs. It wasn't a lot of
- 28:43Speaker 3: variety around the songs. I felt like I could take
- 28:48Speaker 3: the Ghosts verse from the one song and just swap
- 28:52Speaker 3: it out on the other song and it would just
- 28:54Speaker 3: keep it would just keep rolling. So that that's like
- 28:58Speaker 3: my my criticism good album, you know, good album, Bangers
- 29:04Speaker 3: on Air.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Just you know, would have wanted a little bit more as.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Far as like executive producing somebody like kind of curating
- 29:15Speaker 3: and shaving off some of the fat and really distilling
- 29:20Speaker 3: it down. Like you know, again, I think I think
- 29:24Speaker 3: it's number seven, but starting from that six hundred.
- 29:27Speaker 4: School, it starts, it it goes, you know. So yeah,
- 29:33Speaker 4: that's my thoughts on it.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I could I could see that because I think.
- 29:39Speaker 2: In a lot of ways, if this was if the
- 29:43Speaker 2: lineup was arranged in a different way, or maybe you
- 29:46Speaker 2: lost a song or two here and then it's a
- 29:49Speaker 2: better album, you know what I'm saying, with the same songs.
- 29:52Speaker 2: But it did feel like one of those situations where
- 29:55Speaker 2: it's even though like I like the joint with Conway
- 29:59Speaker 2: the Machine, it's kind of like the next album we're
- 30:03Speaker 2: going to talk about where I kind of felt like
- 30:05Speaker 2: this could have been like a bonus.
- 30:07Speaker 1: This could have been like a somewhere.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Where you know, maybe the momentum needs to take a
- 30:13Speaker 2: shift real quick and then come back instead of establishing
- 30:18Speaker 2: the tone with you know that record and a couple
- 30:21Speaker 2: of other records, when you needed to establish that with
- 30:23Speaker 2: something else that felt, to your point more like like
- 30:27Speaker 2: a ray album or extension of the Wool or whatever.
- 30:31Speaker 2: So yeah, I agree in that regard, all right, and
- 30:36Speaker 2: following that right on its heels. A highly anticipated album
- 30:41Speaker 2: even before this legend has its series because he talked
- 30:45Speaker 2: about it forever, Ghostface Killer Supreme Clientele two.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Obviously, I reviewed it on this.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Channel and I was really mixed on it because, as
- 30:56Speaker 2: I knows, the gruff, Flemming, the voice ghost Face is
- 31:03Speaker 2: not my favorite. Sometimes I feel today when he has
- 31:09Speaker 2: these like really old references, I mean, like older than me,
- 31:13Speaker 2: like Colgarn Take Me Away and Lord of Dunes, and
- 31:16Speaker 2: I'm like, they don't sell these things no more.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Stop saying well they do, but I'm saying ghost.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Is the only one buying them, Like I have to
- 31:26Speaker 2: look up, like, oh they go Lord of Dunes, But
- 31:28Speaker 2: nobody's reaching for that ever in twenty twenty five, the
- 31:31Speaker 2: Chips a whole a just reaching for everything else. But
- 31:36Speaker 2: you know that's a nitpick because I also don't want
- 31:38Speaker 2: Ghosts to try to sound young.
- 31:40Speaker 1: But overall, there was a lot of songs I liked.
- 31:44Speaker 2: There was a lot of songs I felt like, Man,
- 31:46Speaker 2: I don't know, but I felt like his skits were
- 31:50Speaker 2: much better than Ray Kwon skits and just really quick
- 31:55Speaker 2: to talk about the song A song that appeared early
- 32:00Speaker 2: on that could have appeared later, the song with Mop
- 32:04Speaker 2: that was just too early for me because this is
- 32:07Speaker 2: supreme clientele too.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I need metaphysics. I need that up. You know what
- 32:12Speaker 1: I'm saying.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I need rap Kingpin, I need that up in the
- 32:16Speaker 2: to establish this is I am man before we get
- 32:20Speaker 2: to oh, Mop Collad, Like you know what I'm saying,
- 32:23Speaker 2: and I love mop so.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Supreme Clientele two, I mean with a like, we got
- 32:31Speaker 1: radio history with Supreme Clientele one. We played that whole
- 32:36Speaker 1: album on the radio every week.
- 32:38Speaker 2: It was like, Yo, I think we should start running
- 32:40Speaker 2: Child's play like we were just every week. So your
- 32:45Speaker 2: anticipation of Supreme Clientele too, and you know what your
- 32:49Speaker 2: thoughts about it?
- 32:50Speaker 4: Yo?
- 32:51Speaker 3: Man, again the legend has it that roll out, the
- 32:57Speaker 3: set up I thought was really good Supreme Clientele to
- 33:04Speaker 3: being on the Marquee.
- 33:08Speaker 4: Reservations, like.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Because, like you said, the history with that, with that
- 33:16Speaker 3: album and its just being a sequel, it's like, Okay,
- 33:20Speaker 3: what we're gonna give. We're gonna give the brother a chance.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Let's let's hear what he has to say. But I
- 33:30Speaker 3: was cautious.
- 33:32Speaker 7: With with that, with that title, with that approach, I
- 33:38Speaker 7: was cautious, And yeah, if we're gonna get into my
- 33:44Speaker 7: what I thought overall, you want me to get right
- 33:46Speaker 7: into that like.
- 33:47Speaker 1: The well yeah about this album?
- 33:49Speaker 3: Yeah, about the album, I feel the same way that
- 33:55Speaker 3: I felt about Ray.
- 33:56Speaker 4: You kind of mentioned it too.
- 33:59Speaker 3: This album get started for me like at Windows, which
- 34:05Speaker 3: is like and maybe like six songs in.
- 34:09Speaker 4: It's not to say that those like you said Ghosts
- 34:13Speaker 4: and Mop collaboration. Yeah, I'm on board. I agree one
- 34:18Speaker 4: hundred percent with what you're saying regarding the sequencing. If
- 34:22Speaker 4: we could have got that maybe later on.
- 34:26Speaker 3: And there's a pocket with this album.
- 34:32Speaker 4: I think it starts with Windows.
- 34:34Speaker 3: I gotta go back and look at the listening, but
- 34:36Speaker 3: there's a pocket where he gets into this groove with
- 34:41Speaker 3: the DJ and it's like this nostalgia, you know.
- 34:46Speaker 4: The DJ is.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Like calling it out and he's introducing the songs. That pocket,
- 34:55Speaker 3: Like I needed that to be at the front man.
- 35:00Speaker 4: We needed that forward, you know. So there's a lot
- 35:06Speaker 4: of good.
- 35:08Speaker 3: A lot of good songs in here, a lot of good,
- 35:13Speaker 3: good production.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I do.
- 35:17Speaker 3: I can't front. I do feel type of way about
- 35:19Speaker 3: rap Kingpin. I had to be honest, like I thought
- 35:23Speaker 3: that was a little overdone. I could have dealt with
- 35:28Speaker 3: the the Eric B and rock Him sample and could
- 35:32Speaker 3: have been done at that. And then you you know,
- 35:34Speaker 3: you put mighty healthy in it, you put ice water
- 35:37Speaker 3: in it, and it's like a yo.
- 35:40Speaker 4: You know, you know it. But as far as Ghosts and.
- 35:47Speaker 3: You know, the the flatboyant and the his unique way
- 35:56Speaker 3: and flow to approach your songs that I was there
- 36:01Speaker 3: with those first cup we had to like chisel through
- 36:04Speaker 3: that because it was like that kind of gruff flow.
- 36:07Speaker 3: And then when that pocket happened, it was like, oh,
- 36:11Speaker 3: that's him right there, that's the Okay, that's it right here,
- 36:15Speaker 3: you know. And so overall, man, I think it's good.
- 36:19Speaker 3: I really liked the way that it closed out with
- 36:24Speaker 3: with Myth and Ghosts and the song the Friends song.
- 36:28Speaker 3: I really thought that that was a nice a nice touch.
- 36:32Speaker 3: It felt, it felt wu tang and it felt it
- 36:37Speaker 3: felt ghosts like that ghost has that that that talent
- 36:43Speaker 3: to make those really like heartfelt you know, like like
- 36:48Speaker 3: Child's played it like really it's like endearing, these really
- 36:52Speaker 3: endearing songs. So I thought that that was really good,
- 36:56Speaker 3: a really good way to close the album.
- 36:57Speaker 4: So with criticism, it's good. It's good. Well overall.
- 37:04Speaker 3: You know, when Supreme clients out the original, it's just
- 37:09Speaker 3: like yo, man, it's not even it's it's that was
- 37:16Speaker 3: a time. It's like lightning in a bottle. Yeah, it's
- 37:20Speaker 3: lightning in a bottle. But it's good, you know for
- 37:23Speaker 3: those folks that want to you know, put on some
- 37:26Speaker 3: brand new ghost face. This this is good. This will
- 37:29Speaker 3: do it for me personally, it starts to really kick
- 37:33Speaker 3: off at Windows for me, and that's like again six
- 37:37Speaker 3: songs in, but after that, like you know, the Court
- 37:42Speaker 3: songs and things like Yo, those are dope concepts I
- 37:46Speaker 3: thought were good.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you know, when you think about how
- 37:51Speaker 2: we're breaking down this album, these albums and for those
- 37:55Speaker 2: who are watching or listening, leave your comments to the
- 37:57Speaker 2: comments section about you know or how you felt about
- 38:01Speaker 2: each album. And again, criticism isn't always negative, right. I
- 38:09Speaker 2: think people take that word critique and think that means
- 38:14Speaker 2: you have something negative to.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Say, and it's what the word is.
- 38:20Speaker 2: You're having to think about this thing critically, right, like
- 38:24Speaker 2: what is it that you like?
- 38:25Speaker 1: What is it that you don't like? You know why?
- 38:28Speaker 4: Maybe?
- 38:29Speaker 2: And I think one of the things I said in
- 38:32Speaker 2: my review that again, like I said, Supreme Clientele is
- 38:36Speaker 2: lightning in the bottle. If you're able to even come
- 38:39Speaker 2: close to duplicating that, that's crazy, right because you almost can't,
- 38:44Speaker 2: especially when that was in what two thousand, you know
- 38:48Speaker 2: when that dropped, that's twenty five years ago. So like
- 38:53Speaker 2: my criticism was that I think he tried to capture
- 38:59Speaker 2: the feeling of Supreme Clientele, but missed the most important
- 39:03Speaker 2: element that made that project. So though it wasn't the skits,
- 39:08Speaker 2: it wasn't just well, it wasn't just the skits. It
- 39:10Speaker 2: wasn't just the comedy or features. It was the rapping
- 39:16Speaker 2: style super Califraz and listen like, this is what he
- 39:23Speaker 2: used to do. You know what I'm saying, Like, uh,
- 39:26Speaker 2: you know, we was senting miss cinder Blast like we
- 39:29Speaker 2: don't even know what that means, but we.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Loved that shit.
- 39:33Speaker 2: He could have just and he you know, explained it
- 39:35Speaker 2: on drink Champs like yo, I was just.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Rhyming things that rhyme together.
- 39:40Speaker 2: That's what was That's what we loved about Supreme Clientele.
- 39:44Speaker 1: That's the ghost we got.
- 39:45Speaker 2: So I think if he would have even taken a
- 39:48Speaker 2: couple of songs to do just that, it would have
- 39:51Speaker 2: felt like a sequel more to me than to you know,
- 39:56Speaker 2: put the title on it. And also I hated the couple.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I was just like, come on, man, what is the
- 40:02Speaker 2: looney too? But you see what I mean about the
- 40:04Speaker 2: references like the Looney Thunes, like the kids watch SpongeBob
- 40:08Speaker 2: and everybody else, SpongeBob might be dated, like come on, man,
- 40:15Speaker 2: it was just one of those things, all right. Then
- 40:19Speaker 2: after that we start seeing I heard so main snippets beforehand,
- 40:26Speaker 2: and I think that was just my anticipation. I was like,
- 40:29Speaker 2: this might be crazy because I haven't heard one snippet
- 40:33Speaker 2: that didn't sound crazy on a snippet, like in a
- 40:36Speaker 2: club Alchemists overhead playing Speaker's Dumb far from whoever was recording.
- 40:42Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm like that's crazy. Like I'm just hearing
- 40:48Speaker 2: all these records. So eventually Homecoming seasons around Mob Deep
- 40:54Speaker 2: drops Infinite you know have on the boards along with
- 40:58Speaker 2: the assists from Alchemy. Big Noise is back. Now I's
- 41:03Speaker 2: on a couple of tracks. It felt like QB was back.
- 41:08Speaker 2: And I remember listening and shout out to Kill because
- 41:14Speaker 2: I said this at Homecoming because you know, they had
- 41:17Speaker 2: dropped and we ain't even talk. So we see him
- 41:19Speaker 2: on the yard and he's like, Yo, what you think
- 41:21Speaker 2: about the Mob Deep. I'm already looking at him like
- 41:26Speaker 2: clips and Mob deepis Mob Deep.
- 41:31Speaker 1: That's how I felt at the moment, because I was.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Like, this Mob Deep album is impossible, Like it sounded
- 41:39Speaker 2: like Prodigy was like I'm gonna come down there.
- 41:42Speaker 4: Yeah, man, Cat you.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Know what I'm saying, I'm gonna come down there. I'm
- 41:49Speaker 2: gonna be in the studio. Let me know when I
- 41:51Speaker 2: need to go in the boot. It was just because,
- 41:55Speaker 2: you know, because you know, like we had so many
- 41:58Speaker 2: posthumous albums. I'm better than but you always know Damn
- 42:05Speaker 2: Fife was there. But this sounds like the past because
- 42:09Speaker 2: it sounds like it was recorded before him.
- 42:11Speaker 1: We don't even know if he liked all the verses.
- 42:13Speaker 2: We don't know if he was working on another verse
- 42:16Speaker 2: to that song or that one, but they did a
- 42:18Speaker 2: good job with it. But this Damn Mob Deep album
- 42:22Speaker 2: sounded like no Nigga Prodigy was in the mother for
- 42:27Speaker 2: the studio. Okay, he went into booth then he was
- 42:33Speaker 2: like it was just the way he would would say,
- 42:38Speaker 2: you know, like I'm gone but I'm here, but I'm
- 42:41Speaker 2: you know, don't cry for me kind of thing. And
- 42:45Speaker 2: it worked in a way that it didn't really work
- 42:47Speaker 2: to me with Tupac because I always felt like with Tupac,
- 42:51Speaker 2: like seeing that I Ain't Mad at You video was
- 42:53Speaker 2: the closest to that feeling like Damn, he recorded this,
- 42:58Speaker 2: He did this before he got shot, and this is
- 43:01Speaker 2: kind of crazy. He getting shot in the video and
- 43:05Speaker 2: it just made it gave you that feeling. But this
- 43:08Speaker 2: Mob Deep album is that and it's not. I came
- 43:12Speaker 2: back to just tell you don't worry about.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Me, no nigga. I came back, no Mob Deep shit.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Like so I when you when Mob Deep dropped Infinite Man,
- 43:25Speaker 2: what was your thoughts about this latest project in the
- 43:28Speaker 2: legend has its series?
- 43:30Speaker 3: Yo, man, I don't know how I could everything you said,
- 43:37Speaker 3: everything you said, like as soon as you know, I
- 43:42Speaker 3: turned it on, I listened to it.
- 43:44Speaker 4: I could not. I couldn't stop listening to it. I
- 43:49Speaker 4: couldn't stop listening to it.
- 43:50Speaker 3: I think, Yo, you would confirmed that because you said
- 43:53Speaker 3: the same thing, like Yo, you would text me like, Yo,
- 43:55Speaker 3: I can't stop listening to this damn album.
- 43:58Speaker 4: You know what I mean. And it's just the piggy
- 44:00Speaker 4: back off of what you said.
- 44:02Speaker 3: It sounds like Prodigy said, Yo, let me come down
- 44:06Speaker 3: in and I'll take it a step further.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Don't let me have to come down there.
- 44:13Speaker 3: And now that I'm here, I'm taking off my belt
- 44:15Speaker 3: and his belt was ass whole album, you know what
- 44:20Speaker 3: I'm saying? Like scary good scary, Like the album is
- 44:26Speaker 3: scary like you said, like his presence on this album. Man,
- 44:31Speaker 3: they did, I mean excellent, excellent job man, excellent, Like
- 44:39Speaker 3: it's so good man, and I don't I don't want to,
- 44:43Speaker 3: you know, I can't control what somebody else is gonna do.
- 44:46Speaker 3: And if have it, here's this you know you know
- 44:49Speaker 3: you're gonna do whatever. But it's so good. It's like, yo,
- 44:54Speaker 3: I think we call it. We call it dead, like
- 44:58Speaker 3: don't make don't try to make it another one. No,
- 45:02Speaker 3: this that's how you put the stamp on on on
- 45:09Speaker 3: on the infamous like that right there, you know, like
- 45:14Speaker 3: this is where I feel like it started.
- 45:17Speaker 4: This theme.
- 45:19Speaker 3: Uh, when we talk about legend has it right here,
- 45:23Speaker 3: this is where it's like, this.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Is why legend has it right right? This is why
- 45:32Speaker 4: right not Like Yo, you know I'm coming around.
- 45:34Speaker 3: We're gonna do a cool little No, I'm active now
- 45:38Speaker 3: and I'm better than anything that y'all got going on
- 45:44Speaker 3: better or I can at least compete or guess what
- 45:47Speaker 3: they gonna jump on this album clips like Yo, we
- 45:50Speaker 3: got I mean, yeah.
- 45:52Speaker 4: We in the same class. So we yeah we over
- 45:54Speaker 4: we over there, yeah, man, I.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Mean excellent work man, excellent contribute contribute excellent tribute to.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Prodigy.
- 46:10Speaker 3: Yeah, this this right here, man, this this.
- 46:17Speaker 4: Is one of them ones. Yes, this is one of
- 46:20Speaker 4: them ones. Man.
- 46:22Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna stop there, I got
- 46:24Speaker 3: the land my plane there.
- 46:26Speaker 4: I know we're gonna get back to this one.
- 46:28Speaker 3: It's time to start about the rankings.
- 46:30Speaker 4: But yeah, one of them ones.
- 46:34Speaker 1: All right.
- 46:34Speaker 2: So following up like right away, in the same month, Halloween,
- 46:40Speaker 2: to be exact, probably the one album that was most
- 46:45Speaker 2: mysterious in regards to how are they going to do this?
- 46:50Speaker 2: Because whereas Prodigy had Havoc and Alchemists and even like
- 46:56Speaker 2: nas like everybody's just pouring into this album to make
- 46:59Speaker 2: it what it needs used to be, you have Harlem's Finest.
- 47:04Speaker 2: The King returns. That's the name of it, right, Yeah,
- 47:06Speaker 2: Return of the King Big L. And the last time
- 47:11Speaker 2: we heard a project from Big L, which was also
- 47:14Speaker 2: a posthumous release, was The Big Picture, which everybody loved,
- 47:18Speaker 2: which contained you know, unreleased songs, a couple of collapse
- 47:23Speaker 2: and freestyles.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Well, this was some of that, you know.
- 47:27Speaker 2: And honestly, I don't know if I heard everything on
- 47:31Speaker 2: here before. I felt like a lot of it was
- 47:34Speaker 2: stuff I hadn't heard or maybe I hadn't heard it
- 47:37Speaker 2: in a long.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Time, so I didn't recognize it.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Obviously, the freestyle with him and jay Z was here,
- 47:45Speaker 2: and I'm glad the full freestyle was here because that
- 47:49Speaker 2: first j verse was like, okay, jay was nice then,
- 47:53Speaker 2: but then that second verse was I ruled you since
- 47:56Speaker 2: you used to rap like the fool snickings. It was like, yep,
- 47:59Speaker 2: thats him too. For those who don't know, that's him,
- 48:03Speaker 2: the bigger the booth, but doing that ship where niggas
- 48:06Speaker 2: like nah man, who was this? It's thinking for Brooklyn
- 48:12Speaker 2: obviously changed, but but you saw a big l was
- 48:16Speaker 2: in the pocket, like you saw who the Elder Statesman
- 48:19Speaker 2: was on the mic clearly in that moment. But uh,
- 48:25Speaker 2: I reviewed it again for this channel, and I remember
- 48:29Speaker 2: listening and the only disappointment I had was just because
- 48:33Speaker 2: of a theory of minds that I wish was true,
- 48:36Speaker 2: was that maybe there was an album that his former
- 48:41Speaker 2: record label was holding on to and somebody like Knives
- 48:45Speaker 2: and Master Pill just went and bought it and then
- 48:47Speaker 2: cleaned it up and gave it to us.
- 48:50Speaker 1: But that wasn't the case.
- 48:51Speaker 2: It was probably you know, again loose versus the freestyles,
- 48:55Speaker 2: and you know, in general, I thought it was I
- 48:57Speaker 2: thought it was decent and I wasn't that man at
- 48:59Speaker 2: the Mac feature either. I hate when people say, you know,
- 49:03Speaker 2: like something's gonna be whack because you had this image
- 49:06Speaker 2: of Big L and you don't think it messes with
- 49:09Speaker 2: Mac Miller.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Dog. I'm not the.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Biggest fan of Mac Miller, but Sean Price loved that dude.
- 49:16Speaker 2: And if Sean Price messed with Mac Miller and Cam
- 49:20Speaker 2: just said it himself, Cam Run just said it. I
- 49:22Speaker 2: think that was Cam. I didn't think it was a
- 49:25Speaker 2: big deal, but overall I felt like it was cool,
- 49:29Speaker 2: but it just wasn't what I would have been excited for.
- 49:32Speaker 1: It, not like the Big Picture, which I thought was
- 49:36Speaker 1: really dope.
- 49:36Speaker 2: So Big L drops posthumously, you know herd McGruff, which
- 49:43Speaker 2: was a good touch to have him come back and
- 49:46Speaker 2: rap with him.
- 49:47Speaker 1: What did you think about this project?
- 49:48Speaker 2: Did you have any anticipation or maybe not even anticipation,
- 49:53Speaker 2: but what were you expecting, you know, when you when
- 49:57Speaker 2: this album was announcing that you know, you find heard it.
- 50:01Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 50:01Speaker 3: I didn't know what to expect, especially with you know,
- 50:05Speaker 3: AI and you know, all the things that that we
- 50:09Speaker 3: can do now as far as like snatching the just
- 50:13Speaker 3: the voice from something that already exists and making your
- 50:17Speaker 3: own acapella. Like I really didn't know what to expect
- 50:25Speaker 3: from the single. I really liked the single with Big
- 50:28Speaker 3: L and Naas. I thought, you know that that transported me,
- 50:34Speaker 3: that felt like nineties, that felt like the dangerous times.
- 50:42Speaker 4: It did.
- 50:43Speaker 3: It just did like, yeah, this is this is definitely that.
- 50:49Speaker 4: And overall, man, I liked it.
- 50:51Speaker 3: I thought it was I thought it was good for me.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Is bittersweet.
- 50:58Speaker 3: It's bittersweet because by the time I got to the
- 51:01Speaker 3: end of it, it was just like wow, like there's
- 51:05Speaker 3: just that reminder that man, he didn't really get a
- 51:08Speaker 3: chance to shine. That's why we can't get like this
- 51:12Speaker 3: full on like what we got from the album prior
- 51:16Speaker 3: with Infinite, Like as though Prodigy has had years of music,
- 51:23Speaker 3: you know, and versus and different cadences and different uh
- 51:30Speaker 3: standpoints and viewpoints to you know and versus to express
- 51:35Speaker 3: those those viewpoints, whereas so Big L he didn't, he
- 51:40Speaker 3: didn't have that like it for a short amount of
- 51:43Speaker 3: time we were able to get recordings from him, and
- 51:46Speaker 3: what's crazy is just with that short amount of time,
- 51:50Speaker 3: almost like how timeless it is, like his flow and
- 51:55Speaker 3: his talent and what he was able to do as
- 51:57Speaker 3: far as putting his words together, it was. It was bitter,
- 52:00Speaker 3: you know, bitter sweet, but again a reminder of the
- 52:05Speaker 3: of the dark times.
- 52:06Speaker 4: I remember when you and I.
- 52:08Speaker 3: Talked about it and I was like, yeah, man, he
- 52:10Speaker 3: dropping F bombs on hand and everything. I mean not
- 52:13Speaker 3: the rugulars bombs, but the other F bombs that you
- 52:16Speaker 3: can't drop the day. That's when I knew, like, yeah,
- 52:19Speaker 3: this this from back then because it's politically correct on this,
- 52:24Speaker 3: like real you know what I mean. So, but production wise,
- 52:31Speaker 3: you know, I just think they were They did a
- 52:33Speaker 3: great job with this. Like to me, that joint with
- 52:37Speaker 3: mac Miller, I think that that was a great stand up.
- 52:40Speaker 4: I like how mac Miller says how he.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Was influenced, like to kick the song off, and then
- 52:49Speaker 3: you know, we get into his verse and then we
- 52:52Speaker 3: get into two big l that verse and the way
- 52:56Speaker 3: that they put it together, in the way it was produced.
- 53:00Speaker 3: But that was great.
- 53:01Speaker 4: I thought that was a great you know, posthumous song,
- 53:07Speaker 4: you know, so yeah, man, I thought it was good.
- 53:11Speaker 4: I thought it was good. Good That first seven.
- 53:16Speaker 3: You know, I've never heard I think that that is
- 53:19Speaker 3: top notch what they were able to do with Big
- 53:22Speaker 3: L And then the last with the freestyles is just a.
- 53:25Speaker 4: Reminder of who this guy is.
- 53:28Speaker 3: And then again for me just walking away from it,
- 53:31Speaker 3: like wow, like it's just being bittersweet, like yeah, that's
- 53:35Speaker 3: all we that's what we got, y'all, that's what we
- 53:37Speaker 3: were able to get, you know, bittersweet from that aspect,
- 53:43Speaker 3: but just thankful we were able to get it, you
- 53:47Speaker 3: know what I mean. Thankful that they were able to
- 53:49Speaker 3: curate that and then put it back.
- 53:51Speaker 4: Into the world.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely.
- 53:55Speaker 2: At this point fit the vibe of this rollout of
- 54:00Speaker 2: Legend has it because a lot of it wasn't predictable
- 54:06Speaker 2: and it was exciting to know what was next and
- 54:09Speaker 2: what the single was gonna be. And to your point,
- 54:12Speaker 2: to join with nas, I really loved the video because
- 54:16Speaker 2: the video really put me in the pocket of Oh,
- 54:21Speaker 2: we're going back. You know what I'm saying, We're going
- 54:24Speaker 2: back to a time, like I said, dangerous times. See
- 54:27Speaker 2: some of y'all be talking, well, you know some of
- 54:29Speaker 2: us was in ciphers in these dangerous times where you
- 54:33Speaker 2: know it could get real quiet while you spitting, they
- 54:36Speaker 2: get really quiet.
- 54:39Speaker 1: You can be there and be like, yo.
- 54:40Speaker 2: I flip pyramids upside down to touch the sun, and
- 54:43Speaker 2: niggas just be like. And if you were in one
- 54:47Speaker 2: site where you might get the root cats, be like yo,
- 54:50Speaker 2: niggas be clapping and he just cut you off, or
- 54:53Speaker 2: while you wrap it and everybody be like dangerous times.
- 55:00Speaker 2: So if you're saying, oh, unc rap or this that
- 55:03Speaker 2: and the third your pen ain't even ready, it's not
- 55:07Speaker 2: even worthy like at this point, and Big l as
- 55:10Speaker 2: you can see, was dangerous basically no pun intended. Then
- 55:15Speaker 2: we come to November, everybody getting their greens ready, getting
- 55:20Speaker 2: the mac and cheese ready, getting that soul food together,
- 55:23Speaker 2: getting ready to see if you can avoid a relative
- 55:27Speaker 2: or two or whatever. But it's the season and Daylight
- 55:31Speaker 2: so and I ain't gonna lie man when Dayla So
- 55:35Speaker 2: as we started going further further, Daylight Soul album was like,
- 55:38Speaker 2: I think that's the one I want, Like, I think
- 55:42Speaker 2: that's the one that might be great, like I just
- 55:45Speaker 2: because it's I had my anticipation for Ghosts as a
- 55:49Speaker 2: big ghost fan and Ray and slick Rick, but Daylight
- 55:53Speaker 2: I couldn't figure out I was like, all I know
- 55:55Speaker 2: is they dropped the dud, and I don't think they
- 55:59Speaker 2: liked the fact that we call it a dud. They
- 56:01Speaker 2: dropped Cabin in the Sky. I text OC while I
- 56:06Speaker 2: was in the gym early morning. Daylight got one. They
- 56:12Speaker 2: got one because and I reviewed it on the channel.
- 56:16Speaker 2: You can watch a full review of my thoughts. But
- 56:19Speaker 2: just to contextualize that whole episode, I was like, damn
- 56:25Speaker 2: their skits here. The opening skit is a long skit,
- 56:29Speaker 2: but it fits the album so beautifully that I don't
- 56:34Speaker 2: want to skip it.
- 56:35Speaker 1: I want to hear it.
- 56:36Speaker 2: I want to experience that first listen over and over again.
- 56:39Speaker 1: And we're not just talking about nostalgia field situation.
- 56:43Speaker 2: We're talking about like, Yo, Daylight came with the bars,
- 56:46Speaker 2: they got beats, they had Pete and Knots and Primo.
- 56:51Speaker 1: And like they were just getting busy.
- 56:54Speaker 2: And by the time that album ended, I was like, Wow,
- 56:57Speaker 2: this is this is one of the best albums of
- 57:00Speaker 2: the year, hands down. And this is another situation with
- 57:06Speaker 2: an MC true boy, Dave being in the group having
- 57:10Speaker 2: passed away, and even though this album is dedicated to him,
- 57:15Speaker 2: just like with the Prod Prodigy joint never once did
- 57:18Speaker 2: I think like, oh they Dave, it gets sad. It
- 57:21Speaker 2: was like, in the back of my mind, it's just like, nah,
- 57:24Speaker 2: good health, Dave getting busy on good health.
- 57:27Speaker 1: God damn.
- 57:27Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 57:30Speaker 2: So I Cabin in the Sky when you first heard it, Man,
- 57:38Speaker 2: what were your thoughts knowing that, you know, there's only
- 57:41Speaker 2: two albums left and this is Daylight Soul's offering.
- 57:45Speaker 3: Yeah, man, So to to your to your point, i'd
- 57:48Speaker 3: heard the single. I think it was the package. I
- 57:52Speaker 3: heard that first, and I was just like, Yo, this
- 57:57Speaker 3: is this.
- 57:59Speaker 4: This just.
- 58:01Speaker 3: Feels right, like this is nice and bright and uh intentional, great,
- 58:11Speaker 3: great production.
- 58:13Speaker 4: Rhyms is there?
- 58:15Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, this is this is Daylight Like, this
- 58:19Speaker 3: is unapologetically Daylight Soul, like from from what I remember,
- 58:25Speaker 3: you know, and I'm not the biggest Daylight Soul fan,
- 58:28Speaker 3: you know, but from what I you know, when I
- 58:31Speaker 3: would listen to them, that the because I think I
- 58:36Speaker 3: said this to you before, Like you know, I was
- 58:39Speaker 3: a bit confused younger seeing them on MTV, you know,
- 58:44Speaker 3: in flower pots, and it's like, you know, I used
- 58:47Speaker 3: to think this was like some hippie hippie rap like
- 58:50Speaker 3: you know what I mean, I didn't really understand, you know.
- 58:53Speaker 3: And then later with doing the doing the show that
- 58:57Speaker 3: you know we used to do back and.
- 59:00Speaker 4: At w e a ah.
- 59:04Speaker 3: It wasn't until like I heard them it was the
- 59:12Speaker 3: Jeffrey Osborne joint that that sample.
- 59:17Speaker 4: I think I think did Premiere do that? I think
- 59:20Speaker 4: he did with that? What what we have?
- 59:24Speaker 3: I forget the name of the truph so much more
- 59:26Speaker 3: so much more off of gron made me.
- 59:31Speaker 4: I'm like, yo, okay, yeah, I really like this.
- 59:36Speaker 3: I really like because I was just planning it for
- 59:38Speaker 3: the show, you know what I mean.
- 59:40Speaker 4: But I'm like, yo, this is I really like this.
- 59:43Speaker 3: And what really made me because again when Steaks is high,
- 59:49Speaker 3: when I was like fifteen and stakes is high, I
- 59:51Speaker 3: used to think like, okay, these older dudes trying to like,
- 59:57Speaker 3: you know, talk down on like yo, I'm I'm the dagone.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: It was written and things, and here this dude talking
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: about the stakes is high, Like I don't want to
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: hear that, you know what I mean, Like I'm in, I'm.
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: Outside, you know what I'm saying, even.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: Though he trying to put me on, and what he
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: really saying is really it, you know, but at the
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: time I wasn't you know, I wasn't comprehended. So you know,
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: in my twenties, you know, late twenties, thirties, if finally.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: I'm like, okay, nah yo, these dudes is nice.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: And if what it was the rock Cocaine Flow MF done,
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: I was like, oh yeah, nah, I can't front on
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: him like they they just got a different style with
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: they hip hop.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: But this is respect. I gotta respect what they do. Period.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: So all right, fast forward to today to down you know,
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: I heard the package and I'm like, yeah, man, this
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: is like, this is like I want to hear this
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: from them. I'm ready. I'm ready for this. So that,
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: like you said, man press and play on Cabin in
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: the Sky and that first song and the intro, I
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: was like, yo, I don't I don't get this from
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: nowhere else. I don't get this from nowhere executed in
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: this way. And that was the feeling from the beginning
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: to the end, like the execution them being intentional, like
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: you said with Dave, the way that they brought Dave
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: in with good it's like like you said, he getting busy.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: This is the reason why we call them legends, right,
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: this is it, Like, yo, you can't you can't get
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: this from nowhere else and this is at a high level.
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: So yeah, man, I thought that this was I thought
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: this was excellent. Again is it?
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Are we you know, we're gonna get to the streets
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: and all of that, like you know, the forty five
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: year old Acinola is like, yo, this is excellent hip
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: hop for grown folks.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: This is excellent, you know what I mean. It was
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: just the.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: One, like the one skit like you and I agreed on.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: It was one skit where it felt like it was
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: it was too much. It was like the dating skit
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: and the chicken. That was the only time where it's like.
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: Okay. And then it was a few times where all right,
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: it was a little a.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: Little happy, go lucky and I'm like, oh yeah, I
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: might be, but no, like it was brief, and then
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: we got back to back.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: To regil regularly scheduled programming. So it works.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: It worked, but it was it was a couple of
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: times where it's like, all right, it's getting but in
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: the bigger scheme, it's like, well, this is what they
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: bring to the table, like this is and that's what
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: I like too. It was the vibe was up even
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: though like you know, Dave had passed away. It's just
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: like we get this contrast like we had with Mob
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: Deep and Prodigy going hard and this being from a
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: street a street perspective, but then like we get this
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: album Cabin in the Sky where it's like really grounded
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: and from just a grown folks perspective. So Mob deeper
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: pials to the fifteen year old and grown because they
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: had both, but then Cabin in the Sky is like
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: grown contemporary, like yo, thinking about a nice switch up
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: from thinking about like you know, those those tough conversations.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: In life with them them keeping it on a brighter tone. Man.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: I just thought it was excellent, excellent work.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and just real quick for those who hear us
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: talk about that skit and you've heard it, yes, you know,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: there have been similar skits, you know, mister west right
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: or Lauren Hill. But what made this significant and not
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: just another one of those is the fact that Dave
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: is seemingly absent from the class. That's how it's played, right,
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: everybody's here, Nah's heir cubes of everybody's here, but it's
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: like Dave is absent, and then you get into the album,
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: and by the end you have the teacher saying thank you, Dave.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: That's that is perfect, perfect on so many levels, you
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. Like I said this, this is
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: mature rap. You still get bars, you still get beats,
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. But the overall tone is maturity.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: And that was what But you would get from that
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: opening skit that you've kind of heard those types of
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: skits before. In this instance, this was dedicated to him
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: without being on the nose about it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, And that's hip hop. We
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: know trash. I really don't like twenty one Savage.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Trash rappers like twenty one Savage. He don't have that
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: in his pen and if he does, he needs to
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: incorporate it more or point me to the whack record
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: that he does.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Okay, because I'm pretty sure it's whack, because.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Like you, if you rap like you can't speak English,
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: which you know why he might have a barrier with that,
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: then I just doubt you are capable of writing a
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: good record. But nevertheless, Daylight Soul just did it exactly what.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Not almost like exactly what we wanted.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: It was more, you know, it was really it was
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: really a great album. And the last one, for those
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: who don't know, in December was NAS and DJ Premiers
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: The Light Years.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: You already heard ox Thoughts.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: I have a full review of that album on the
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: channel so you could check it out. But before we
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: wrap it up, we just want to cover a couple
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: of things or whatever.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: One being.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: How do we rank them?
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: So I'm gonna go first and then you can go ahead,
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: but from from best to least best, here's my ranking,
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: uh Del Sol, Cabin in the Sky, Mob Deep Infinite,
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Nas and DJ Premier Light Years, Ray Kwon, The Emperor's
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: New Clothes, Ghost Face, Supreme, Fient Tel Two, Big L Harlem, Kingpin,
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Return of the King, Hallan's Finance, My Bad Halland's Finance,
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Return to the King, and slick Rack Victory.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: So what's your seven? What's your lineup?
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: I got Mob Deep Infinite, I got i Sould, Cabin
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: in the Sky, I have NAS Premiere Light Years.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: But this is where it gets tricky.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: I actually have for number four, I got Big L
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: Harlem's Finest Turn of the King.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: And I actually think.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: From a production standpoint and just being able to throw
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: something more and let it let it rock. I might
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: that three and that four might that might flip flop,
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: that might that might change. Yeah, But as of right now,
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: I would say light years, then Harlem's Finest, Return of
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: the King. Then I have ghost Face, Supreme Clientele two,
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: Ray Kwon, the Emperor's New Close, and then Slick Rick Victory.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: M hmm.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: That's dope to see that you have big l that
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: high and then also have it where it could be
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: interchangeable with knives and primo.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: That says a lot about about this rollout of albums.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: In closing, as far as this release of albums for
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: twenty twenty five, what do you think this was successful
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: overall for for Massiveien?
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: I think so. I think so.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: I mean, you know, everybody has a I guess they
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: are different measures of success. But when we're talking about
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: just that exposure and putting the pioneers, that the legends
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: that get us excited about hip hop to the forefront,
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: giving them a platform to.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: Be able to get their music out there, I think
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: that that's a success. I do.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: You know, we could start I could start to getting
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: my Donald downer like yeh yes, is it a pocket
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: for us and a bigger scheme of things as opposed to,
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: you know, the younger audiences. Where as you mentioned it,
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: it's twenty one Savage and then it's a whole bunch
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: of other rappers that I don't even know their names,
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: but yet this is what they're playing in the c
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: and this is what everybody is.
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: And I have no idea who these people are, but
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: yet they are. This is it?
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: So in the bigger scheme of things for that, I mean, yeah,
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: somebody could you know, maybe like academics could step it out.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: I mean, ain't do nothing like Yeah, if you look
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: at it from that standpoint, you know, somebody might see
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: it as a failure. But if you look at it
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: from the standpoint of no, they got what you do
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: in the club over there, and when we categorize hip
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: hop and y'all got.
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: Your platform, this has a platform too. Establishing that platform,
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: I think it's success.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: That's a success, and I would hope that it keeps
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: going to keep that platform established, to sustain that, to
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: allow others.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: To be able to do the same thing, so everybody eat,
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: everybody gets the chance to eat.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: So yeah, I think it's a it's a success in
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: that standpoint.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, I think.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: In a lot of ways, like you said, it's not
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: necessarily about the sales, just as a result of Naz's
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: run with hit Boy and how a lot of younger
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: people really got into Nas as a result having him
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: usher these other legends in and say, yo, they just
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: as dope.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: We all come from the same era.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: Probably gave Ghosts and Ray and Daylight and Big L
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: and Mob Deep like more fans as a result, you know,
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: and like you said earlier, like sort of put them
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: on a stage that had they dropping these albums separately.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: You know, maybe Mob Deep has the same buzz, maybe
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Daylight does. Maybe Ray and Ghosts have, you know, a
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: lower buzz, and then especially with Big L, maybe it's
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: just hardcore hip hop fans. So I think it was
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: a success as far as like you said, you know,
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: with the exposure of these artists and just a simple
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: fact that you know, hip hop is where it is,
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: and this is an extension of not only NAS and
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Hit Boys Run, but Common and Pete Rock last year,
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: ll last year, you know what I'm saying, dropping albums
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: that was on the radio, like LLL had some joints
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: that was like on the radio, and clips coming back
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: after fifteen years, so it's all like nice momentum, and
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: you know, we got to mention him because he's our guy.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: But even you know, Kendrick, what ain't no other kings
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: in this rap thing?
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: The siblings like, I love it, Like, just keep bringing
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: bringing those back because hip hop should be all of
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: it and not just some of it or some or
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: these dudes who can't read who are rapping because they
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: sound like they rap like they can't read.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Every time I hear, I'm like, yo, this dude can't read.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: I know he can't read, or maybe not if you can,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: that makes me upset because you should be better, you
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. But the last thing we're going
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: to do here is something I basically said. With hoping
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: this continues, I think Master Pill can look at this
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: as a success. Like even if it's just from a
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: popular culture standpoint, the conversation around these seven joints was
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: just crazy, like it just dominated tomlines every time somebody
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: dropped along with the comic book and in the vinyl
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: that came out for everything, everything, just the rollout was ridiculous.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: Who would we want to see if they are ever
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: going to do another rollout? I have a few names.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna just rattle him off because I think there
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: are artists who would who have the same legend status
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: that people would anticipate a new album from them in
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: this form and they haven't really released anything in a while.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Starting off Scarface, add Scarface to that. His tiny desk
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: was through the roof. People didn't know Scarface was that talented.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: And his last album, which was probably more than ten
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: years ago, you press play on that joint, you could
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: drop it now.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: That's how crazy he was.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: So Scarface Koogie Rapp of course who hinted at it,
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: and the way he smirked, I think that's a go.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: But he got to get some beats because last time
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: he had a dope ass album because he had the
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: hoodie on either he looked like he was like what
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: was that old Western movie? Damn well, what's his name?
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: And he had the girl with him, the little girl
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: True Grit. It looked like hood true Grit, Like.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Oh, g rap is back.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: But the beats were trash and it was just like, nah,
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: that's now you bring Coode, you rap back. Little Kim.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Little Kim is dropped, but she she's trying to get
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: in those other lanes and grab yeah, and we're just
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: looking at the nah man.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: Bring back to Kim.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: We know, get her, get her right in a project,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Let her spit nas be on the track. You know
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: Whoever have it?
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Get her some alchemists, some crit let Kim cook because
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: she sound the same when she raped like that. But
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: you know, I just think it would work other ones
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: real quick, like e P and d uh. Eric Sherman
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: put out a compilation album and when I heard the
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: EP m D song on there, I was like, oh yeah,
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: I will. I would take an album with two day
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: if it's going to sound like that.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: Lauren hill Na seems to be the only one who
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: can get her focused.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: She show up at the shows.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: She was on King's Disease too, and everybody was crazy
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: about it. Give her seven joints she's gonna show up for.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: She shows up for NOAs.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: So if if you see like Legend has It and
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: you got like Kim and you see Lauren hill On.
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: The people gonna go crazy when they see Lauren crazy.
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: That would be crazy.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I have two others, but I go ahead and.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: I don't have any for man those yo, man that
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: was crazy only had two and one of them.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: Was g rap you know what I'm saying.
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: And I was thinking d I TC you know what
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: I mean, Like, Yo, if we can get like A
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: but that's the thing, Like, dude, do they they might
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: already have material out, but like if we can get
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: one of those d I T C produced you know,
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: and you get some you get some fat Joe on
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: A you know, Like yo, I think that that would
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: be a that would be a dope. Look like I
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: could see that, especially like I think, you know, they
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: were doing that thing with this this big ALP album,
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: So like, yo, I would wanna I would want to
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: hear more because this it sound good.
- 1:17:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: I think there was a compilation that came out a
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: couple of years back that was it was crazy. It's
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: everything you would think it would be. But I feel
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: like I was the only one that heard it, Like
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: it just didn't have no But even the cats who
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: probably loved show biz and ag and love Finesse and
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: all of them, like even they weren't talking about it.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: And I just think that not a lot of people knew.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: It seems like people know when Diamond D is dropping,
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: but when d TC dropped their compilation I forget the
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: name of it, but it was pretty dope.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: It was crazy.
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: I thought it was better than that original joint they dropped.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: But yeah, the other loose ones I had was like
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: Big Daddy came because when you hear him rapping today,
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: it's like somebody get gain some beats.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: He sounded better today than he did, you know, when
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: he was falling off and all of that, and the
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: other one. They released an.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Album a few years back. Again, I felt like I
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: was the only one to listen to it. Leave It's
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: on rock Nation, but the Locks right if you if
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: you don't worry. I had some West Coast in my
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: mind also, y'all, but I just didn't want to keep going,
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: you know. But like I think he can really look
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: at the landscape and who knows, they probably would have
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: it planned, but look at the landscape of like, who
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: is some artists out there that are like these seven
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: in some way, some shape or form that we can
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: do this with and it'd be dope and like give
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: us the surprise.
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: Money power respect, Like like you said that pocket you
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: got and then the Locks album, yo, that you get like.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: A song right in the middle that would be that bridge, yo,
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: that would be crazy.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you get them bridges in there. I think uh.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: I had another one that I think would be a surprise,
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: But when she appeared on Rhapsody's Eve album, I was like, nah,
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: Queen Latifa is still rapping like this, like it's almost
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: missed it. When I because they had a video on
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: all of that almost missed quint that Queen Latifah. And
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: I'm thinking, like, I mean, yourn It's like you can
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: do whatever, like Tretch could still spit, like you can
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: literally go down the line, man and at least find
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: some that don't have situations that people will be excited for.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: But to have ring ghost, I mean shit in daylight,
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: I guess you can have anybody.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: At this point. So yeah, yeah, all right, y'all.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: Well what did you think about the Legend has It?
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: The Legend Has It? Series?
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: Did you like everything? What you like, what you didn't like?
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: What could be better? Who do you want to see next?
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: If there's an next? Leave your comments in a comments
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: section below. I like to thank my guest as always
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: coming through. You know, we talk like this all the time,
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: but it's it's good to chop it up and it's
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: good to even have something like this happen that we
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: can talk about for sure, you know, because we.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Could have easily just been on it. Like nah, man, I'm.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: Gonna just take the kids to school, you know, watch
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: the game and there's no more hip hop. Right, It's
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: dope to have something exciting. Any any projects, anything you
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: want to.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Put out there.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: Oh well, you know, just just working as far as
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: the film stuff, working on something now, you know, it's
