- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter four, flowers, who shall overcome this earth and the
- 0:08Speaker 1: world of Yama, the Lord of the Departed, and the
- 0:11Speaker 1: world of the gods. Who shall find out the plainly
- 0:16Speaker 1: shown path of virtue as a clever man finds out
- 0:20Speaker 1: the right flower, the disciple will overcome the earth and
- 0:26Speaker 1: the world of Yama and the world of the gods.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The disciple will find out the plainly shown path of
- 0:34Speaker 1: virtue as a clever man finds out the right flower.
- 0:41Speaker 1: He who knows that this body is like froth, and
- 0:44Speaker 1: has learnt that it is as unsubstantial as a mirage,
- 0:49Speaker 1: will break the flower pointed arrow of Mara and never
- 0:53Speaker 1: see the king of death. Death carries off a man
- 0:58Speaker 1: who is gathering flower and whose mind is distracted, as
- 1:03Speaker 1: a flood carries off a sleeping village. Death subdues a
- 1:09Speaker 1: man who is gathering flowers and whose mind is distracted,
- 1:14Speaker 1: before he is satiated in his pleasures, as the bee
- 1:19Speaker 1: collects nectar and departs without injuring the flower or its
- 1:24Speaker 1: color or scent. So let a sage dwell in his village,
- 1:31Speaker 1: not the perversities of others, not their sins of commission
- 1:36Speaker 1: or omission, but his own misdeeds and negligences should a
- 1:41Speaker 1: sage take notice of. Like a beautiful flower full of
- 1:48Speaker 1: color but without scent, are the fine but fruitless words
- 1:53Speaker 1: of him who does not act accordingly. But like a
- 1:58Speaker 1: beautiful flower, full of color and full of scent, are
- 2:03Speaker 1: the fine and fruitful words of him who acts accordingly.
- 2:10Speaker 1: As many kinds of wreaths can be made from a
- 2:13Speaker 1: heap of flowers, so many good things may be achieved
- 2:18Speaker 1: by a mortal when once he is born. The scent
- 2:23Speaker 1: of flowers does not travel against the wind, nor that
- 2:27Speaker 1: of sandalwood, or of tagara and malika flowers. But the
- 2:33Speaker 1: odor of good people travels even against the wind. A
- 2:38Speaker 1: good man pervades every place sandalwood or tagara, a lotus
- 2:45Speaker 1: flower or a vasiki. Among these sorts of perfumes, the
- 2:51Speaker 1: perfume of virtue is unsurpassed. Mean is the scent that
- 2:58Speaker 1: comes from tagara and sandal wood. The perfume of those
- 3:02Speaker 1: who possess virtue rises up to the gods as the
- 3:06Speaker 1: highest of the people who possess these virtues, who live
- 3:13Speaker 1: without thoughtlessness, and who are emancipated through true knowledge. Mara,
- 3:20Speaker 1: the tempter never finds the way as on a heap
- 3:27Speaker 1: of rubbish cast upon the highway, the lily will grow
- 3:31Speaker 1: full of sweet perfume and delight. Thus the disciple of
- 3:36Speaker 1: the truly enlightened Buddha shines forth by his knowledge among
- 3:41Speaker 1: those who are like rubbish, among the people that walk
- 3:45Speaker 1: in darkness. End of Chapter four
