  High you watch this year if you got out there to see them.

  So I got to know Mitch Moore when he was over here at

  Roosevelt. Our kids actually went to the

  same daycare before he moved over and took over the City High
• 1:23
  program. He's done a great job, but he
• 1:25
  tends to run a little bit hot. Tim Dwight's been in our studio
• 1:29
  before, and as Ken got to know, Timmy D runs a little bit hot.

  I'm just envisioning that sideline coming up this fall

  with Tim Dwight up and down and Mitchell Moore pace and up and
• 1:41
  down referees. Those sideline judges going to
• 1:43
  have some work to get those guys back off the sideline, I'm going
• 1:45
  to guess. I can tell you I've gotten to
• 1:49
  know Mitch pretty well over the last 2 1/2 years roughly.

  And I can tell you he gets pretty hot because he cares a
• 1:56
  lot. I'm I'm a big fan of Mitch.

  He's been super helpful and I've been around the Iowa City
• 2:02
  program a little bit watching watching a few guys that are
• 2:05
  either friends D1 or or just full on D1 guys.

  I know Parker Sutherland is headed to you and I that's come
• 2:11
  and fall a tight end in the 25 class.

  I think he's super underrated 6. I think he's 6-8.

  Even if he doesn't play tight end, you can make into a left

  tackle. I'm really excited about him.

  Bobby Bacon was their quarterback this last season and
• 2:26
  he's got a little Mahomes to him.

  I I was, I was honestly pretty disappointed he never got AD one
• 2:31
  offer. He's headed to Pittsburgh State.

  He's going to be fun to watch. He just can really dip the ball

  in there. And of course, they've got a

  lineman headed in Northern Illinois.

  So that program is is doing just fine.

  And yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Tim

  effects things down there, what he can impart on the kid.

  But they've got some other young guys coming up too.

  Dawson Call is actually a legacy recruit, Kent Call son, who was

  running back in the 90s. And Dawson's a hard hitter
• 2:58
  himself. He can he could end up on
• 3:00
  defense this year too, playing both ways and and he's got some
• 3:02
  real potential. So yeah, big fan of of Mitch and
• 3:06
  and the higher and and what he's done with the Little Hawk.

  Yeah, absolutely. I mean, we, we watched it first
• 3:10
  handed with one of the City Schools here, took Roosevelt and
• 3:13
  built them up and all of a sudden kids wanted to come out
• 3:16
  and be a rough rider. And maybe that wasn't the case

  necessarily before he took the job, really got involved in the
• 3:22
  community. So we know the type of person
• 3:24
  that he is and certainly a good hire there.

  Well, Speaking of hire didn't go your way.

  Obviously, when companies merge, one of the unfortunate parts it
• 3:34
  is there's going to be change. And that was the case with with
• 3:38
  rivals and and the on three media network.

  So did you see this coming? I mean, obviously when you get

  wind that you know, the companies are merging, you have
• 3:49
  to wonder in the back of your mind, I would but imagine

  Elliot, what the what's in store for you and obviously didn't go

  your way and you've been doing some really good work over there

  and it's unfortunate. Yeah, thanks, Ken.

  It's, it's been tough. You know, this is actually the

  second time I've been laid off in three years.

  The first one was with a different radio company and that

  was a budget thing. And this time it's a merger.

  And man, you guys, I hate being unemployed.

  I hate it so much between, you know, not not having and, you

  know, the consistency of a job and obviously the paycheck is

  tough too. Luckily, patent Vent, the guy

  who was the owner of Hawkeye Beacon really ensured that I'm

  going to be taken care of. So I'm doing I'm doing OK there.

  Pat's a great guy. Couldn't endorse him more and

  haven't had worked with him. But yeah, I mean, you know, we,

  we found out about the merger via Twitter and, and you know,
• 4:44
  it, it was, I have nothing against rivals will say that

  Josh Helmholtz, who's the director of operations there has
• 4:51
  treated me very well as well. And, and man, I'm, I'm really
• 4:55
  grateful for this opportunity. This is, you know, my, my
• 4:58
  previous gig in, in radio was good, but this, this really, I

  feel like catapulted me to the next level.

  And part of that is you guys having me on and, and being on
• 5:08
  with, with KX&O. So, so I'm, I am really grateful

  at the end of the day, doesn't make it there.

  It doesn't mean it doesn't suck, you know.

  So still, still the job search and, and hoping I can find

  something here soon. But yeah, you know, we're, we're

  making it. We're making it and, and got a

  few other things in the works then.

  I would love to go up to Madison, cover the Badger, would

  kind of called my name a little bit.

  Girlfriend and I both love Austin, TX.

  You know, it's one of those situations where you got to

  balance things out with her too, because, because got to put a

  ring on it here soon, but kind of got to balance things out.

  You know, she's, she's got a job that she really loved in, in

  Cedar Rapids. So we're figuring things out.

  And yeah, I'm, I'm pretty much open to anything.

  You know, the Iowa beat is something that comfortable, but

  I feel like I could definitely continue to grow in and, and

  expand whatever I do next. So yeah, we'll, we'll see what

  happens. But but I'm, you know, I, I feel

  a lot better about it this time than I did, like I said 2 1/2

  years ago when the same thing happened, just much more.

  out that you're part of the Hawkeye beach, you'll miss the

  McCollum arrow at as he takes over for Fran McCaffrey.

  What do you remember? What will you remember about

  covering Fran Mccaffrey's team? And then what?

  What do you think Hawkeye fans have to look forward to with

  their new men's basketball coach?

  I think what I'll remember most is, is the pace.

  I think that's what a lot of people remember with, with Fran

  and what what they they scored a lot of points.

  And you know, with that, I'm really excited to see what Josh

  Dix does this coming year, for example.

  I mean, he was just having to do to having to do just about

  everything for that team last season and he had such a high

  feeling. I'm really excited to see what

  he does. I'm excited for Peyton Stanford

  to whether that ends up him getting an opportunity in the

  end NBA or if it's overseas. And the Price had an awesome

  season this year too, and getting to know some of these
• 7:47
  guys on this team has been a real blessing.

  Price and and Peyton are both just first class guys.

  Obviously both being from the Waukee area.

  I got to know a couple members of the staff too, and Matt

  Gaines and Tristan Spurlock both both really good, good people as

  well. Excited to see what Tran and

  Tristan do out at Penn and see what's next for Matt.

  But I would say that those are the things that I would probably

  remember the most. But this coming season, man, I

  assuming I'm on the OR I'm finding a way to get on the I

  would be. I am really looking forward to

  see how starts full Garrett and Hopsin all mesh, plus what the
• 8:23
  staff does with with the point guard and the foul or the
• 8:27
  forward position. As you know, Tyler Tashman
• 8:29
  reported this morning that Ashton Williamson be committed.

  So and also I'm really excited about Trevid year rock.

  I know he's a valley guy that you guys obviously know a little
• 8:39
  bit and I think that edition is honestly pretty underrated.

  I was at the three SSB event this what was it a couple weeks

  ago and really the talking to a few people about how things are
• 8:52
  going with this new staff. I had several folks tell me,
• 8:54
  man, I think that year Rock edition were underrated.

  I think that they got a steal. So I don't know, you know, I

  don't know that he plays it's on a minute this year by any means

  offensively. I think the skill sets there

  defensively is the concern just because it's not for a

  basketball anymore right so that that'll be interesting.

  I will say it wouldn't shock me if you rock sees the floor in

  his first year and I'm excited to see who you know jumps out.

  Isaiah Howard, the guy that that Ben McCollum just continues to

  rave about Tavion banks, I think is going to be a fan's favorite
• 9:28
  as the guy who's a really good defender.

  So this team I'm excited to see how the potential all comes

  together and I think starts is going to be awesome.

  I think Bulgaris is going to be awesome and if Hawson can can
• 9:41
  really get going shooting he might be the perfect compliment

  to them too. Peyton Sanford, you brought him

  up. Did you, did you guys have any

  inkling at all just how hurt that he was?

  I mean, Trent and I, we obviously knew there was

  something there, but we didn't know the extent.

  And when they when you find out, you know just how bad it was and

  what he paid, played through in order to be on the floor because

  he knew his team needed him and they were better with him on the
• 10:05
  floor. It kind of it kind of hits a

  little differently when you when you finally clued into, you

  know, just the the extent of his injuries in his final year.

  Yeah, I really do think that. Well, I mean, people just just

  really didn't know, right. I mean, I tweeted out there was

  a like, what athlete embodies toughness to you?

  And I quote tweeted it and posted a picture of a picture

  rather of of Peyton probably with a few weeks ago in the

  season. And people really came after me

  just because they didn't know. And I mean, it's easy to get

  frustrated when you're so passionate about a team, right?

  So, so I get it. But at the same time, yeah, we

  did know, at least I had the Inklings and had heard a few
• 10:52
  things here and there about about his health status.

  But I think that it was just really an embodiment of who

  Peyton is. He's going to grit through it

  for his team and and for himself.

  And he wants to win so bad. And I'm glad he got to go out on

  the note that he did, scoring 30 points and looking like the
• 11:11
  Peyton Stanford we know him to be.

  And he actually, I think this is after the Nebraska game, he came
• 11:19
  up to me and thanked me. He's like, thanks for the tweet,

  man. So it was just kind of cool.

  You know, people don't. People don't get to see those
• 11:25
  sides of the athletes, too. And that you know, U.S. media
• 11:28
  members get to build relationships.

  With these guys. And and Peyton was was one of

  the the better guys on the beat. And you see the passion on the

  court, you see what he's capable of.

  And we only got to see it in flashes this season,

  unfortunately. But only Hawkeye to have a

  triple double like you got to, you got to honor this kid and

  you got to be grateful for for what he did during his time in

  Iowa City, too. You mentioned the Williamson

  deal. Now I know you got to know a
• 11:55
  bunch of the staff, staff members that came in from Drake

  and he still got some contacts. Definitely as as we know,

  Elliot, do we read into that, that somebody else is coming,

  that Williamson got a better offer.

  What do we read into it that suddenly this guy that was

  committed had to make commitment up on his Instagram page and and

  now that's not happening. Do you read into it that maybe

  Iowa, maybe they found somebody else out there in the transfer

  portal? You know, I, I have, I had heard

  the rumblings of it coming and a couple days ago and I, I reached

  out to a few people still with the program and I haven't heard

  So I don't, I don't know that I would read into it super deeply

  at this point just because I don't.

  good way to think about, it's not the Mystic way to think

  guys and I talked about Keza Giffa fairly recently and who

  really focused on finding the right fit personality wise and

  basketball and the football, etcetera, how closely, and I'm

  guessing you've kept a pretty close eye on it since you cover

  a Big 12 school. Are you following everything
• 15:23
  that's going on with the SEC and what the playoffs going to look
• 15:26
  like? Should it be 5 and 11?
• 15:28
  Should it be 4/4? What is it, 4-4 and Math Ken
• 15:31
  2211? How close are they following and
• 15:36
  what's best for Iowa State as you look at it, and not just
• 15:39
  Iowa State, but the Big 12 and the ACC in general.

  Well, it seems like the the push from the Big 12 is, is kind of
• 15:47
  the like I believe like a 5 + 11 type format where you've got the
• 15:52
  four auto qualifiers out of the power fours and then an outlaw
• 15:55
  or well or AG5. I guess top ranked there plus
• 15:59
  the next 11 would all be in essence like at large.

  But seems like the SEC is pushing the 4422 and it seems
• 16:10
  like there's some negotiating going on with that.

  So I think as far what what Jamie Pollard and the Big 12's
• 16:18
  pushing is probably what I would would have advocate for and seem
• 16:22
  like it seems like that would be a good way to go.

  But then I think you got to look closer maybe at how those
• 16:29
  rankings and the points and all that, how how they come up with
• 16:32
  that, because it seems like whatever system they use last
• 16:36
  year might not have been to the big twelves liking at least I I
• 16:42
  think, you know, it seems yeah, Arizona State got in.
• 16:46
  They did sneak into that that that auto well that into the top
• 16:51
  4. But then the rest of the Big 12
• 16:54
  totally out of it all together didn't get any of those other
• 16:57
  slots that were out there. They went elsewhere.

  So I think maybe the Big 12 would be well, well advised to
• 17:05
  maybe look into how they come up with those rankings and, and how
• 17:09
  they're going to go top 16, especially if you're looking at
• 17:12
  A at a 5 + 11 model. They're going, they're going to
• 17:15
  want to make sure those 11 spots aren't all going to the SEC and
• 17:18
  the Big 10 and they end up in worse shape than they would have
• 17:21
  with the 4422 the system. It's like you have a microphone
• 17:27
  in here, Bill, because Ken and I were talking about that and, and
• 17:30
  I'm baffled by the Cyclone fans of my life, just Big 12 fans
• 17:33
  that that I hear from that are condemning what the SEC is
• 17:37
  trying to do. If I'm the Big 12, from my
• 17:39
  perspective, I gobble up those two bids because it's not 2 only
• 17:43
  you could even earn 3 in in particular years.

  The way that it's structured, the power of the SEC in the way
• 17:49
  that they wield and the name recognition that they have that
• 17:51
  the Big 12 doesn't have. And this iteration, I think the
• 17:55
  two makes a whole lot more sense for them.

  I, I think you have that exactly right.

  So why do you think it's a pushback?

  Is it just? The SEC.

  SECSECS being bullies. Yeah, yeah, I think that's

  probably that's probably the case.

  They already maybe they're kicking themselves a little bit

  for wielding so much power on the the, the CFP and and
• 18:17
  wielding a lot of that last year to the SEC and the Big 10 to
• 18:20
  come up with the the to to run the whole thing.

  So they will already wielded a lot of control to them last year
• 18:28
  and and maybe kind of being a little stubborn and not not
• 18:31
  wanting to see much more of that.

  And I, I think that the the Big 12 hopes that they would have
• 18:38
  two or three team, three teams in the in the top 16 to where
• 18:43
  that they you would come out a lot better than they did last
• 18:47
  year. But I, I just, if they keep
• 18:48
  that, that rating system the same way that it, that it was,
• 18:52
  I'm not, I'm not sure about that happening to be honest with you,
• 18:55
  because I, I think that, that it did not come out well last year

  as we saw each week with those, those ratings announced.

  Brett, your mark and I believe that I saw a story yesterday

  that most of the men's basketball coaches in the Big 12
• 19:12
  are behind the expansion of the tournament to 76 teams, the NCAA
• 19:17
  men's basketball tournament. Your March behind it and it it's
• 19:21
  by the sounds of things is going to be in place for this coming
• 19:25
  March. Not going to have to wait March
• 19:27
  of 2026. It's going to expand either to
• 19:30
  72 or 76. Your mark and the Big 12 coaches
• 19:34
  want to see it go well all the way to 76.

  Why do you think that? Is well, I would have probably
• 19:41
  rather from a revenue standpoint that and you look at that even
• 19:46
  we were just talking about the CFP.

  If they if they ever added to that more well, who I think who
• 19:52
  lands to benefit from that. If they ever added to 16, it'd
• 19:56
  be it'd be the FCC in the Big 10.

  Well, and when college basketball you're looking at

  that, who stands to benefit the most I think from.

  The what, 88 extra spots they would, they'd go to the they,
• 20:09
  they'd probably go to the Big 12 and they'd probably go to the
• 20:13
  FCC. So I think that from from a your
• 20:16
  mark standpoint, yeah, you, you add 8 and it's not going to be
• 20:19
  from any low major beyond like auto qualifiers there.

  So those eight are going to go to an FCC or a Big 12 team.

  got the release of a couple of names from the transfer portal

  Yeah, the the Yale transfer you're talking about is actually

  a Tamatoa McDonough. He was they, they announced him

  previously, but he he will not join the program until June.
