- 0:22SPEAKER_00: In a world where we value equality, we usually talk about power as if it's a bad thing.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: But power is like time, money, or any other resource.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: It can be used for either good or bad purposes.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Writers don't think about what we do in terms of power.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: We use words like creativity, craft, platform, audience, or entrepreneurship.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: But power?
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Power is a concept that seems a little bit old-fashioned, if not outright outdated these days.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Well, power though is just influence.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: When you have power as a writer, you can change people's minds.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: You can tell a story that has impact.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: You can write books, sermons, articles, social media content, or other things, and know that it can influence and change other people's minds.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: So if power as a writer is a good thing, how do you get it?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Well, there are many ways to get power, such as having the right connections or even just getting lucky.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: But those are external situations that you can't predict or control.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: There's really only one surefire way to become powerful as a writer.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Margaret Atwood, the author of the book The Handmaid's Tale, said it best.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: She said, a word after a word after a word is power.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: And by the way, this quote was the title of a 2019 documentary where she discusses her life and work.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Well, the meaning of Margaret Atwood's phrase is pretty obvious.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: When you put down one word after another, eventually you wind up with something that you can share.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And when you accumulate those words and they become books and screenplays and speeches or other types of shareable content, they can have more power than you can possibly imagine.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So remember, your words have power.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So get out there today and put down not just one word, but a word after a word after a word.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Whenever you write today, remember, words are powerful, and you can use this power for good in the world.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
