- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday the 4th of June
- 0:17and we are on our way through the book of Deuteronomy.
- 0:20Thank you for tapping a play and coming back to pick up where we
- 0:24left off yesterday and keep on working our way through it.
- 0:28And you might be thinking to yourself, boy, this Old
- 0:30Testament, reading it, it's hard work compared with, you know,
- 0:34the the beautiful flow of the New Testament talking about
- 0:37Jesus. The wonderful thing to know as
- 0:40we read these words, these are the same scriptures that Jesus
- 0:44and all of those people in the Gospels had read and read and
- 0:49again and again and studied so that these stories really shaped
- 0:54their world. So if we want to understand
- 0:58Jesus ministry and those people around him who received his
- 1:02teachings, it all comes out of the context that is set up in
- 1:07these readings that we read, particularly this story so
- 1:11central in their identity and their place.
- 1:15So as we read this book of Deuteronomy, not only are we
- 1:19giving God the opportunity to speak through these words to us
- 1:22and our lives, but also we familiarise ourselves with the
- 1:27world view that Jesus had during his earthly ministry.
- 1:31So let's continue on this incredible twofold journey as we
- 1:34read together Deuteronomy chapter 3.
- 1:47Next we turned and headed for the land of Bashan, where King
- 1:51Ogg and his entire army attacked us at Edray.
- 1:55But the Lord told me, do not be afraid of him, for I have given
- 1:59you victory over Ogg and his entire army, and I will give you
- 2:03all his land. Treat him just as you treated
- 2:06King Scion of the Amorites who ruled in Hejbon.
- 2:11So the Lord our God handed King Ogg and all his people over to
- 2:15us, and we killed them all. Not a single person survived.
- 2:19We conquered all sixty of his towns, the entire our Gob region
- 2:24in his Kingdom of Bashan. Not a single town escaped our
- 2:28conquest. These towns are all fortified
- 2:31with high walls and barred gates.
- 2:33We also took many unwalled villages at the same time.
- 2:37We completely destroyed the Kingdom of Bashan, just as we
- 2:41had destroyed King Scion of Hezbon.
- 2:44We destroyed all the people in every town we conquered, men,
- 2:48women and children alike. But we kept all the livestock
- 2:52for ourselves and took plunder from all the towns.
- 2:56So we took the land of the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan
- 3:00River, all the way from the Arnon Gorge to Mount Hermon.
- 3:05Mount Hermon is called Syrian by the Cydonians, and the Amorites
- 3:10call it Senna. We had now conquered all the
- 3:13cities on the plateau and all Gilead and Bashan, as far as the
- 3:18towns of Salakhar and Edray, which were part of Ogg's Kingdom
- 3:22in Bashan. King Ogg of Bashan was the last
- 3:26survivor of the great rephates. His bed was made of iron and was
- 3:31more than 13 feet long and six feet wide.
- 3:35It can still be seen in the Amorite city of Rabah.
- 3:39When we took possession of this land, I gave to the tribes of
- 3:42Reuben and Gad the territory beyond Arroa along the Arnon
- 3:47Gorge, plus half of the Hill Country of Gilead with its
- 3:50towns. Then I gave the rest of Gilead
- 3:53and all of Bashan Ogg's former Kingdom to the half tribe of
- 3:57Manasseh. This entire Agub region of
- 4:01Bashan used to be known as the land of the Rephates.
- 4:05Jaya, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh, conquered the whole
- 4:09Aghab region in Bashan, all the way to the border of the
- 4:12Gesherites and Markathites. Jaya renamed this region after
- 4:17himself, calling it the towns of Jaya as it is still known to
- 4:22day. I gave Gilead to the clan of
- 4:24Marka, and I also gave part of Gilead to the tribes of Reuben
- 4:29and Gad. The area I gave them extended
- 4:32from the middle of the Arnon Gorge in the South to the Jabok
- 4:36River of the Ammonites frontier. They also received the Jordan
- 4:40Valley all the way from the Sea of Galilee down to the Dead Sea,
- 4:45with the Jordan River serving as the western boundary.
- 4:48To the east were the slopes of Pisgah at that time.
- 4:53I gave this command to the tribes that would live east of
- 4:55the Jordan. Although the Lord your God has
- 4:58given you this land as your property, all your fighting men
- 5:02must cross the Jordan ahead of your Israelite relatives, armed
- 5:06and ready to assist them. Your wives, children, and
- 5:09numerous livestock, however, will stay behind you in the
- 5:12towns I've given you. When the Lord has given security
- 5:16to the rest of the Israelites as He has given to you, and when
- 5:20they occupy the land the Lord your God is giving them across
- 5:23the Jordan River, then you may all return here to the land I
- 5:27have given you. At that time I gave Joshua this
- 5:31charge. You have seen for yourself
- 5:34everything the Lord your God has done to these two kings.
- 5:37He will do the same to all the kingdoms on the West side of the
- 5:40Jordan. Do not be afraid of the nations
- 5:43there, for the Lord your God will fight for you.
- 5:48At that time I pleaded with the Lord and said, O Sovereign Lord,
- 5:53you have only begun to show Your greatness and the strength of
- 5:57your hand to me, Your servant. Is there any God in heaven or on
- 6:02earth who can perform such great and mighty deeds as you?
- 6:06Please let me cross the Jordan to see the wonderful land on the
- 6:10other side, the beautiful Hill Country and the Lebanon
- 6:14Mountains. But the Lord was angry with me
- 6:17because of you, and He would not listen to me.
- 6:21That's enough, he declared. Speak of it no more, but go up
- 6:26to Pisgah Peak and look over the land in every direction.
- 6:30Take a good look, but you may not cross the Jordan River.
- 6:35Instead, Commission Joshua and encourage and strengthen him,
- 6:39for he will lead the people across the Jordan.
- 6:42He will give them all the land you now see before you as their
- 6:47possession. So we stayed in the valley of
- 6:51Bethpeo. Ah, our God, you are a good and
- 7:04consistent God. And as the people at that time
- 7:08and place, as we read these words in Deuteronomy, the
- 7:13concept of a mighty God at the time was filled with the God who
- 7:18was self serving and changeable and terrifying and inconsistent.
- 7:24And here you are with your long term plans and your unchanging
- 7:30nature. Lord, thank you that you are the
- 7:33same from one day to the next, generation to the next, aeon to
- 7:38the next, and that as we come before you, we know exactly who
- 7:43you are and that who you are is so constant.
- 7:48So Lord, when we hear the answer no from you, when we pray for
- 7:53something, Lord, help us to know that this is part of Your bigger
- 7:59plan for us. And that even if what we
- 8:03desperately ask for and what we just believe that we need or so
- 8:06desperately want at the time. Or that you have a better way
- 8:11And that your plans are bigger with a greater awareness of time
- 8:15stretching out in every direction.
- 8:18And that ultimately, You are our loving Father who loves us more
- 8:22than we could ever possibly understand.
- 8:25So Lord, help us sit in your love, your provision, and your
- 8:30wisdom for our lives. And thank you for the gift of
- 8:35Jesus through which you saved us and brought us back into your
- 8:41presence. We pray all of this in His
- 8:43precious name, Amen.
