- 0:00Welcome back, theater lovers. Today we have a special guest joining us,
- 0:03winner of the twenty twenty six Sutton Foster Awards,
- 0:05Lillian Tang. Thank you so much for being here.
- 0:08Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:09I'm very excited to be here.
- 0:11I just wanted to start off by congratulating you on your win at
- 0:13the Sutton Foster Awards. You gave such an incredible performance.
- 0:16How does it feel to kind of walk away with such a high honor?
- 0:19I mean, it's just incredible. I was just so honored to represent
- 0:24the Sutton Foster Awards, my high school,
- 0:27my community, my family at the Jimmy Awards and just really putting myself
- 0:33out there and having that wonderful experience.
- 0:35something I will never forget.
- 0:38It has been quite a journey, you know,
- 0:39from getting into the Sutton Fosters,
- 0:42winning and then going to to the Jimmy Awards.
- 0:44~ where do you feel like though your love for the arts really began?
- 0:49So when I was around seven years old,
- 0:52I had my first big girl role as a little cosette in Les Mis with DreamArts Company
- 0:59directed by Tiffany Sims. And I remember just going on that stage
- 1:04for the first time, singing my very first solo with me,
- 1:07the spotlight and the audience.
- 1:09And I just knew the second I got there that this is what I love.
- 1:14That's such an incredible role at such a young age.
- 1:18Yeah, it was it was so much fun.
- 1:20Everyone in that cast was just so supportive.
- 1:23They were they were just such role models for me.
- 1:26I was the youngest member of the cast,
- 1:28so for them to show me around and to teach me how to read a script where
- 1:34to put where am I supposed to go for this specific song.
- 1:37It was just so wonderful to be in a community that's so supportive.
- 1:42And in that moment you were like,
- 1:43I know this is what I c I wanna do.
- 1:45I wanna be a part of the arts.
- 1:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:47Yes.
- 1:49So what have you felt like has been the biggest challenge that you've overcame
- 1:52on your journey to being a performer?
- 1:55Hmm. I'd say the biggest challenge is to keep going.
- 2:01Cause musical theater, there's definitely times when you will get a
- 2:05no from an audition. And even though you get that no,
- 2:10that doesn't mean that you should stop.
- 2:12You gotta keep going. You gotta keep working hard and you gotta keep putting
- 2:17yourself out there. Cause in the end you will succeed and you will be
- 2:21so happy with the end result.
- 2:23Perseverance is one of those hardest things.
- 2:25I absolutely because like
- 2:26Yes.
- 2:26being able to just keep even in the face of you know,
- 2:29of like of the no's. You know,
- 2:31I I've heard before, you know,
- 2:32like a hyperbole, but like kind of like a thousand no's happens before
- 2:36you get that yes. And you just have to
- 2:37Yes.
- 2:37remind yourself that it doesn't always it does doesn't end with that no.
- 2:41Yeah, it you just gotta keep going.
- 2:43That's what I have to say.
- 2:46And for you, what has kind of been some of your biggest inspirations
- 2:49for being a performer?
- 2:51Honestly, my biggest inspiration is probably my mom.
- 2:54My mom has been a mentor.
- 2:58She's been my biggest supporter.
- 2:59And the first day that I was like,
- 3:02Mom, I want to do musical theater,
- 3:04she was right off the bat helping me finding a voice teacher,
- 3:07signing me up for dance lessons.
- 3:09And it was just so nice to have such a wonderful
- 3:15mom who's so supportive. And
- 3:18I remember after I won the Sutton Foster Awards,
- 3:21the first thing I did was I grabbed my phone and it's like,
- 3:23Mom, we did it. I need to meet you in this room so we can start getting ready
- 3:28for the Jimmy's ~ But I remember just telling her we did it.
- 3:33'Cause not only was it an accomplishment for me,
- 3:35but it was an accomplishment for us.
- 3:37She's been there every step of the way with me.
- 3:40She sounds she's such a supporter and also an active part of being like your team.
- 3:44You know, your your family is there to kind of help you in this journey.
- 3:48And that's so incredible.
- 3:49Yes, I love her so much.
- 3:52And it's important to have parents who are supportive.
- 3:55And that's one of the, you know,
- 3:56the things that, you know, I I feel like as a young kid,
- 3:59a lot of people are like, I want to be an actor,
- 4:01but to have a parent that's like,
- 4:02we can do this, you know, we can we we just have to we have to do it together.
- 4:06And that's incredible. So shout out to your
- 4:07Yeah.
- 4:08mom. She sounds amazing.
- 4:09Yes. Shout out to my mom.
- 4:13So in the school year, I know that there's you get nominated for
- 4:17for the Sutton Foster Awards based on your performance.
- 4:20~ but when did you start to feel like maybe the Sutton Foster Awards were were
- 4:23a reality for you?
- 4:25~ honestly probably the first workshop weekend.
- 4:29I was ~ I was at the East Dancing weekend,
- 4:33which was the second workshop weekend,
- 4:35I believe.
- 4:36Okay.
- 4:36And I remember going into our first what was it?
- 4:40The dance call, yes. It was the first thing that we did,
- 4:43and I remember just seeing everyone already warmed up,
- 4:46being just so professional and learning the dance so quick,
- 4:50and I'm like, whoa, okay. And I remember in that moment,
- 4:53I'm like
- 4:54I made it with all these talented kids and just after that going to
- 5:00our first music rehearsal, hearing everyone's voices come together,
- 5:04hearing the harmonies, hearing the altos,
- 5:06hearing the tenors, sopranos and baritones,
- 5:09it was just so wonderful hearing everyone come together.
- 5:14I do have to say having you know,
- 5:16this was the first time I've ever been to the Sudden Foster Awards
- 5:18and watching you guys
- 5:19really?
- 5:20Yeah, no, so this was a gr great kind of honor to see this.
- 5:22and I do have to say that the moment you performed ~ your solo,
- 5:26my ~ business partner said, She's gonna win and I I was like,
- 5:31How did you know how did you know that?
- 5:31Ha ha ha.
- 5:32When we were driving
- 5:33home and he said, There's just some people that have natural talent and when
- 5:36you see it on stage you can just recognize it.
- 5:38So the moment you you performed,
- 5:40he was like, She's gonna win. ~
- 5:42thank you.
- 5:44But what I love too is that you guys were so,
- 5:47you know, for a for a process like that that is so intense and that there's
- 5:50not a lot of time, you had like a very like family feel to you and
- 5:55all the different students that were on stage.
- 5:57Yeah. ~ we my character medley group and I I remember the first
- 6:03day when we s first sat down and we got to know each other after that moment
- 6:08we just all became best friends.
- 6:10We made a group chat. There is a whole Sutton Foster or awards group chat
- 6:14and we all keep in touch and we're like,
- 6:16Come see our show. Congratulations on this callback and like we're just also still
- 6:20supportive and we all still do feel like a one big family.
- 6:25So incredible. And then you know you you performed your medley and then they they
- 6:30get to the moment where they announce your name.
- 6:31What was that moment like for you?
- 6:34My gosh. I mean, last year I was in audience watching because
- 6:41I wanted to see what it was like to not wa yes,
- 6:45to watch the Sutton Foster Awards and just being a sophomore and then finally being
- 6:50nominated to go this year. I never would have thought I was going to
- 6:54be a finalist and then to win,
- 6:56which is crazy. But I remember in that moment,
- 7:00I was just so shocked. I was
- 7:04I was definitely confused because I'm like,
- 7:06my name was called.
- 7:09Sure.
- 7:09But I mean, everyone up there was so,
- 7:13so, so talented. I remember being backstage because I went last.
- 7:17I'm like, ~ my gosh, everyone is so,
- 7:21so talented. But for that moment,
- 7:24I was just so grateful to be a finalist.
- 7:26And it was just truly an incredible experience.
- 7:30That had to be a little bit nerve wracking,
- 7:32mean the last one. Like I I I feel like I would be one one of those people like,
- 7:35let's get it out of the way, let's go first.
- 7:37I don't wanna I don't wanna sit there with the nerves.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:39But you did such an incredible job.
- 7:42thank you so much.
- 7:45And then you were able to go and represent Michigan at the Jimmy Awards,
- 7:47which is such a high honor. That was so cool.
- 7:50It was so cool getting to also follow you and AJ around on your journeys while
- 7:54you did this. But what was that like to to get there and to be a part
- 7:58of the Jimmy Awards?
- 8:00my gosh, it was just incredible.
- 8:02I remember getting there on the first day and just meeting all these other full
- 8:07very, very talented nominees and just knowing their story,
- 8:11what role they were nominated for,
- 8:12how do they get there, what are their plans for college or future school.
- 8:16And I remember the first thing that we did was again a music rehearsal
- 8:23and again just hearing all these voices come together.
- 8:26And I mean, all of us are just so happy that we made it.
- 8:29this far and just meeting these wonderful people,
- 8:33getting to work with them was just amazing.
- 8:36It was such an honor.
- 8:38I mean it has to be so cool and and also an awesome honor,
- 8:42but it's so cool to be a part of a group that is representing the best
- 8:46of the best for high schools across the nation.
- 8:49Like and to be able to be a to be a representative of that is again such
- 8:53a high honor.
- 8:55I mean, it was just truly unreal.
- 8:57I remember the day we found out if we were in the future group
- 9:01or in character medley. I was just so scared to open that document because everyone
- 9:08was just so talented. You really couldn't tell who was gonna be in which group.
- 9:12And I remember opening up that message and seeing that my name
- 9:17was selected for Character Medley.
- 9:19I remember just started I started crying.
- 9:21I called my mom, it's like mom,
- 9:23we did it again.
- 9:25It was just such a wonderful experience again.
- 9:29And then so like you go and you kind of like audition again to them to kind
- 9:33of be chosen for that. Is that kind of the process for it?
- 9:36Yes. So we had a couple days to like work on the opening number,
- 9:42but then l earlier in the week we had an audition where we had to sing
- 9:48a thirty-two bar ~ yes, a thirty-two bar cut of our character song and then
- 9:53a one minute cut of our selected solo song.
- 9:56And that audition was to determine if you were in the feature group
- 10:00or in the character medley group.
- 10:02And it's so cool that both you and AJ got to be a part of a character medley
- 10:06He does.
- 10:06and to see
- 10:07those characters once again. And I I it's funny because the amount of people
- 10:11I saw also giving love to the show that you were kind of representing as well,
- 10:15Hello Girls, is just incredible as well.
- 10:17Cause you don't really see a lot of that show or that love because
- 10:21of what happened with COVID and stuff.
- 10:22So to be able to have that representation as well is just awesome.
- 10:25Yeah. I was just so honored to continue telling the Hello Girl story
- 10:30and then Suzanne's story as well.
- 10:32~ not again, like you said, like not a lot of people know about this musical,
- 10:37but the story behind this musical is just so interesting and it's just
- 10:42I love telling the story to everyone.
- 10:44At the Jimmy Awards, people were like,
- 10:46When is this musical? and I'm like,
- 10:47Okay. So and at let me tell you,
- 10:50Let me tell you.
- 10:52and
- 10:53everyone at the very end was like,
- 10:54Wow, this is such a really cool musical.
- 10:57And I mean like the fact that this actually happened and that these women were just
- 11:02unrecognized and the fact that it's being told now is just so wonderful.
- 11:07It's one of those shows that I'm always hoping makes a comeback because again,
- 11:12it was cut because of COVID and stuff,
- 11:13it was just it didn't find the life that it was supposed to.
- 11:15And it should because it's one of those stories that is inspiring and wonderful.
- 11:19And that's why we were all we were everyone was kind of in awe,
- 11:22like me and my partner, we were just like,
- 11:24Wow, we getting to see, you know,
- 11:26Lillian perform that on stage was incredible.
- 11:28especially again, you were a sophomore doing this and you were just crushing it.
- 11:34so again.
- 11:36Incredible, incredible performance.
- 11:38~ but you were able to train and learn from so many incredible artists while
- 11:42you were preparing for the at the Jimmy Awards.
- 11:44What was it like to learn from some of them?
- 11:47my gosh, it was truly incredible.
- 11:50I remember we had a Fosse workshop with Charlotte D'Amboise and
- 11:53I remember seeing her performance as Cassie in the chorus line
- 11:58and then her performance in Chicago and the fact that she was teaching me Fosse,
- 12:04which I've never had training of that specific dance style,
- 12:08but learning it from her was just such
- 12:13a an incredible experience. She
- 12:16was a wonderful teacher. She was very supportive of us.
- 12:20And I remember at the very end of the workshop I wanted to thank her
- 12:24for teaching us this wonderful ~ dance style.
- 12:28And I remember her telling me that I gotta keep going on dance and that
- 12:33I gotta keep trying hard and keep putting myself out there because that's what
- 12:38really helps you get far in musical theater.
- 12:41So it was just incredible to not only learn a dance,
- 12:43but to get advice from her as well.
- 12:46Like one of those pinch me moments,
- 12:47you know? Like you just
- 12:47Yes, yes.
- 12:49like where would like how many people would think that this would happen,
- 12:51you know? Like would young
- 12:52Yes.
- 12:53Lillian believe this? Probably not.
- 12:55No, not at all.
- 12:57Young Lillian wouldn't even believe that I would go to the Jimmy Awards
- 13:01or the Sutton Foster Awards.
- 13:04It's crazy. I mean, and then also don't want to downplay it as well.
- 13:07You performed on a Broadway stage.
- 13:09Like that is also such a cool,
- 13:12like what a like what a highlight to kind of like put put a pin in to be like,
- 13:16Yes.
- 13:16Yeah, I performed
- 13:16on a Broadway stage at such a young age again.
- 13:19Yes. And there were just so many highlights of the Jimmy Awards,
- 13:24not only making my Broadway debut alongside a hundred and fifteen other nominees.
- 13:29We had our headshots put up in Times Square,
- 13:33which was so cool to see.
- 13:33Yes.
- 13:36I remember the second I saw my face up there,
- 13:39I'm like, my gosh. It was just it didn't feel real.
- 13:43And then we also got to see MJ the musical.
- 13:47And I've been a Michael Jackson fan for forever.
- 13:51And just to see a musical about him,
- 13:54I will never hear some of the songs the same again because MJ the Musical does such
- 14:00a wonderful job telling the audience of of Michael Jackson's story
- 14:06and this the meaning behind his songs.
- 14:08And I never really dug that deep into those moments.
- 14:12But
- 14:14Seeing it out in front of me, I just got to see a totally different side of Michael.
- 14:19And it was just crazy. And the Michael that night actually made
- 14:25his Broadway debut as well. So I thought it was cool that
- 14:27That's awesome.
- 14:28not only we are making our Broadway debut,
- 14:30but he is as well. And then we later got to have a QA with the cast with
- 14:36the Michael who debuted that night.
- 14:38And it was so cool seeing him debut and
- 14:41answering all of our questions 'cause we were asking him how d how did
- 14:45it feel to make your Broadway debut?
- 14:46Were you nervous? And the fact that he just gave us that advice t when
- 14:51we later made our Broadway debut a couple of days later was just incredible.
- 14:56Yeah, you could take that information and apply it to your own experience
- 14:58Yeah.
- 14:58of p having a Broadway debut. That's so awesome.
- 15:01And truthfully, I I agree with you.
- 15:03Michael Lil Jackson, MJ the musical,
- 15:05is just it's such a spectacle.
- 15:07It's like what it's it's kind of like iconic Broadway in a way that
- 15:10you don't always see
- 15:11Yes.
- 15:12from a lot of shows. Like I I saw the touring production,
- 15:14but it was just still as like awestruck and kind of ~ it gives you that
- 15:19I don't know, it gives you that energy that I feel like it's perfect when you're
- 15:22kind of in the middle of training for the Jimmy Awards and getting ready for it.
- 15:25You need that kind of high energy feel and to see
- 15:27Yeah.
- 15:27like this is what Broadway is.
- 15:30And I mean, we had a we had an MJ number in our ~ opening number this
- 15:36Yes.
- 15:36year at the Jimmy Awards. And every day we would just listen to MJ
- 15:40the musical when our w when it was during our warmup.
- 15:43So when we got to MJ the musical,
- 15:45everyone, all a hundred and sixteen of us,
- 15:48we were just we were so excited.
- 15:52We were dancing, we were clapping,
- 15:54we were hyping up the the Michael.
- 15:57And
- 15:58Later that night after Bows, they give us a shout out and to h hear a shout
- 16:03out from MJ the musical on Broadway was just crazy.
- 16:09And it was just
- 16:10That's so awesome.
- 16:11it was amazing. The cast was just so supportive.
- 16:16They were so kind. And earlier,
- 16:18I believe, we actually got to have dinner with the some of the cast members.
- 16:22And so just having that one on one conversation about how did you get this far?
- 16:27What's some advice?
- 16:28What do you think I should do for this?
- 16:30It was just so incredible to hear real professionals
- 16:37give us advice before we go into the professional workforce.
- 16:40It's crazy.
- 16:42And it really does show you too the the community that is Broadway
- 16:46in theater of just like we're all we're not here to it's not always a competition.
- 16:50It is it's here we're to support each other.
- 16:52You know, we're all trying to build each other up and have beautiful art that,
- 16:56you know, that you want to really make sure that it everybody is having like
- 17:00a very fulfilling time and a happy time.
- 17:02Yes.
- 17:02So it's cool
- 17:02that you got to have that kind of feel with them.
- 17:04Yeah, it was incredible.
- 17:07ex but you mentioned about, you know,
- 17:08as you're going into kind of the workforce.
- 17:10So what are you are your goals or dreams ~ when it comes to performing?
- 17:14~ I mean again like I'm a sophomore.
- 17:17I still have plenty of time to think
- 17:18You do, yeah.
- 17:20what I want to do in the future,
- 17:21but I've actually had an interest in science and medicine
- 17:27for a little bit, but
- 17:29It's incredible.
- 17:29performing is where I love being the most.
- 17:33Again, like I've been performing since I was a toddler basically,
- 17:38and I always have a special place in my heart.
- 17:42for the performing arts and musical theater.
- 17:44I definitely think no matter what I do in the future as an adult or maybe
- 17:50in a couple of years, I definitely wanna continue performing,
- 17:53whether it's professionally or just for fun.
- 17:56I love performing
- 17:56For sure.
- 17:57so much.
- 17:58What what is that dream role that you have that you just you you wanna play
- 18:02it one day?
- 18:03my gosh, my dream roll. There's so many.
- 18:05I can list many?
- 18:06You can l you can list many of them if you want.
- 18:08Yeah.
- 18:09Okay.
- 18:10~ I honestly I would love to be Velma in Chicago.
- 18:16I love dancing. And of course,
- 18:18I just learned Fosse. So I
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:21think that'd be great. Cassie in a chorus line.
- 18:24I love a chorus line. ~
- 18:27I would like to say Fiona in Shrek the musical.
- 18:29I love her story. I love her character.
- 18:32And I think she would just be so fun to play.
- 18:34And I don't really I think that's really it.
- 18:38There's so many roles I would love to play,
- 18:40but I'd say those are my top three.
- 18:42I mean, those are all incredible ones.
- 18:43I mean, and you would you would absolutely kill it at any one of them.
- 18:48thank you.
- 18:49So one final question I just have for is just with all the incredible work
- 18:51you put in to for the Sutton Foster Awards,
- 18:54representing Michigan on national stage at the Jimmy Awards,
- 18:56what advice would you give to young performers who've watched you
- 18:59now on this journey?
- 19:00Wow. I would say take every opportunity
- 19:07you have to perform because not only do I participate in musical theater,
- 19:11I'm also the color guard captain in my marching band.
- 19:14I play piano, I play clarinet,
- 19:17I was in a opera course with ~ Detroit Opera Youth Course when
- 19:23I was little. I was also in the Nutcracker with Ballet Met at
- 19:28the Detroit Opera House as well.
- 19:30And I did competitive dance for a couple of years with Next Up Broadway
- 19:34and just taking every single opportunity to perform,
- 19:38even creating your own opportunities.
- 19:40Like I created a little group of musicians this year or musically inclined students,
- 19:46including me, and we would go to nursing homes and perform for the people there.
- 19:52And so
- 19:54Taking those opportunities, creating your own opportunities to continue your craft
- 19:58and helping out your community will really help you build up your performance
- 20:04and encourage you to do better and encourage you to keep performing.
- 20:09That's great answer. Thank you so much,
- 20:10Lilian, for being here. It's been such a pleasure talking to you.
- 20:13And again, congratulations on this gigantic accomplishment.
- 20:15And we're so excited to see where you go from here.
- 20:17Well, thank you so much for having me.
- 20:20And
- 20:21thank you listeners for joining us here in our box seats until next curtain call.
