- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss. The Critical.
- 0:07Crossroads that shape SpaceX, Tesla X The Boring Company.
- 0:12And Neuralink. I'm your host, Will.
- 0:15Walden Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the company plans
- 0:19to spend between 3 billion and four billion on NVIDIA AI chips
- 0:23this year. This revelation came on Tuesday
- 0:26when Musk addressed the reallocation of NVIDIA H 100
- 0:30Graphics Processing units GPUs originally intended for Tesla,
- 0:35to his other ventures, X&XAI. According to CNBC, Musk diverted
- 0:41approximately 12,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs from Tesla to these other
- 0:48companies. This shift was confirmed by Musk
- 0:50in a post on X, where he stated that Tesla had no immediate use
- 0:55for the chips which would have otherwise remained in storage.
- 0:58The GPU's are integral to Tesla's ambitions in developing
- 1:02its self driving technology. Tesla is constructing a
- 1:06substantial supercomputing infrastructure to support this,
- 1:10with the Giga, Texas facility nearing completion and slated to
- 1:13house 50,000 H 100 GP US dedicated to full self driving
- 1:19FSD training. Musk's actions have sparked
- 1:23discussions among shareholders and analysts about the potential
- 1:26delays this could cause for Tesla's supercomputing projects.
- 1:30This reallocation might lead to months long delays in setting up
- 1:34the necessary infrastructure, a critical component for advancing
- 1:39Tesla's AI capabilities. The delays could add fuel to
- 1:43ongoing criticism from Tesla shareholders, who are concerned
- 1:46about Musk's attention being divided across multiple
- 1:50companies. These concerns come at a time
- 1:53when shareholders are voting on Musk's $56 billion compensation
- 1:58package at the upcoming annual meeting.
- 2:02The financial markets reacted to the news, with Tesla's shares
- 2:05dipping nearly 1% on Tuesday, reflecting broader investor
- 2:09concerns. Meanwhile, Nvidia's stocks saw a
- 2:121.3% increase, continuing its upward trajectory with 135% gain
- 2:17year to date in 2024, driven by high demand for its GPUs.
- 2:22Despite the reallocations, Musk remains optimistic about Tesla's
- 2:26chip procurement, estimating significant investments in
- 2:29NVIDIA hardware. He has stated that Teslas AI
- 2:33related expenditures for the year will total around $10
- 2:37billion, with about half dedicated to the company's
- 2:41internally designed AI systems and the Dojo supercomputer.
- 2:46The Giga Texas facilities development is a focal point for
- 2:49Tesla's future. Musk highlighted that the
- 2:52supercomputing center will initially require around 130
- 2:56megawatts of power and cooling, with plans to expand to over 500
- 3:01megawatts within 18 months. The facility's infrastructure
- 3:05includes massive cooling systems, underground water lines
- 3:09and four large water tanks. Must confirm these developments
- 3:13in a recent post on X, describing the centre as a super
- 3:17dense water cooled supercomputer cluster.
- 3:20The facility is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing
- 3:23Tesla's self driving technology and AI capabilities.
- 3:28The diversion of GP US to X has potential implications for
- 3:31Tesla's timeline in achieving its AI goals.
- 3:35Musk's statement on X explained that Tesla's Austin factory is
- 3:39not yet ready to utilize the NVIDIA chips, justifying the
- 3:43temporary reallocation to prevent the chips from sitting
- 3:47idle. This decision may raise
- 3:50questions among Tesla investors about Musk's focus and
- 3:53priorities, especially given the company's ambitious targets for
- 3:56autonomous driving technology. Tesla is set to unveil its first
- 4:00robot taxi vehicle in August. Tesla's self driving technology,
- 4:05particularly its Autopilot and Full Self driving features, has
- 4:09faced scrutiny following multiple crashes and fatalities.
- 4:13These incidents have put additional pressure on the
- 4:15company to demonstrate progress and reliability in its
- 4:20autonomous systems. Meanwhile, Musk's AI startup XAI
- 4:25is positioning itself as a competitor to giants like Open
- 4:29AI and Google. Last month, XAI announced a $6
- 4:32billion funding round aimed at advancing its AI capabilities
- 4:36and developing new applications for generative AI.
- 4:42NVIDIA, a critical supplier in the AI industry, has seen
- 4:45substantial growth, driven by the demand for its GPUs.
- 4:49CEO Jensen Huang highlighted during a recent earnings call
- 4:53that the company's products are in high demand, contributing to
- 4:56a 200% increase in revenue last quarter.
- 5:00Nvidia's success is tied to its ability to supply essential
- 5:04hardware for AI advancements across various industries.
- 5:08The company has become the third most valuable in the world,
- 5:11reflecting its pivotal role in powering AI research and
- 5:14applications. Musk's confirmation of Tesla's
- 5:18substantial investment in NVIDIA chips underscores the ongoing
- 5:21collaboration between the two companies.
- 5:24This partnership is expected to bolster Tesla's efforts in AI
- 5:27and autonomous driving. Despite the temporary
- 5:30reallocation of resources, the developments at Tesla's Giga
- 5:35Texas facility and the integration of NVIDIA hardware
- 5:38are crucial for the company's future AI endeavors.
- 5:42Elon Musk's strategic decisions regarding NVIDIA chips are
- 5:45indicative of his broader vision for AI across his various
- 5:49enterprises. While the immediate reallocation
- 5:52may pose challenges for Tesla, the long term prospects for AI
- 5:56advancements remain strong, driven by significant
- 5:59investments and ongoing developments in supercomputing
- 6:01capabilities. Hey, thank you so much for
