- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi, everyone. Thanks for listening.
- 0:24Today I want to talk to you a little bit more about a common
- 0:28theme we've been exploring for the past couple months.
- 0:31We have been talking so much in recent episodes about this idea
- 0:35of work, whether it's hard work or creating ease around things
- 0:39in our life and easing the work. But I've been thinking about
- 0:43this topic every day for what seems like the past four months.
- 0:46And as I start to shift my beliefs about what work, and
- 0:50specifically hard work means, I'm also changing my
- 0:54relationship with this idea. It's it's nuanced because of the
- 0:58different messages that we all get every single day about this
- 1:02idea of work. On one hand, you have the idea
- 1:05that it can be purposeful and it is, It is valuable, it is
- 1:09empowering, it can be liberating.
- 1:11It pays off. Hard work pays off.
- 1:14It's necessary to get what you want in life.
- 1:17So there's all of these ideas in one bucket.
- 1:19And I subscribe to a lot of those ideas.
- 1:22I've lived those ideas, but you also have this other bucket.
- 1:26It describes ideas like hard work.
- 1:28It's what makes you deserving. It implies that you only deserve
- 1:33what you work for. It implies that life is a grind.
- 1:36It implies that your work is in your achievement, etcetera,
- 1:39etcetera. And so there's sort of a flip
- 1:42side of the coin to this idea of hard work specifically, and it's
- 1:46a lot of conflicting messages in the world.
- 1:48So in this episode, I want to explore the side of this
- 1:53argument that illustrates how and when the work is actually
- 1:59crucially necessary. And for the purpose of this
- 2:02conversation, let's define what type of work we're talking about
- 2:05here. So this episode is going to be
- 2:07about the inspired action kind of work, the stuff that feels
- 2:11aligned with who you are, the good kind of work, the work that
- 2:15feels creative, necessary, makes you feel powerful and energized.
- 2:20This is not about working yourself to the bone out of fear
- 2:24or shame or guilt or trying to keep up with the Jones or
- 2:28whatever you want to call it. This is truly about work that
- 2:31feels like it's taking you in the right direction, work that
- 2:35aligns with the dream for your life.
- 2:37See the distinction? It doesn't mean that you will
- 2:40always have motivation or will to go out there and do the work.
- 2:44I mean, of course, we're all human.
- 2:46It's, you know, it's easy to get into a place of loan motivation
- 2:49or procrastination just as part of daily circumstances.
- 2:53But we're still talking about work that we know is going to be
- 2:56impactful. I'm betting on the fact that you
- 2:59can tell the difference and you can see the distinction between
- 3:02the two. This all might seem
- 3:04counterintuitive to other conversations that we've had
- 3:07about ease in the past, about inviting ease into your life,
- 3:11asking the question, what if this was easy?
- 3:13But it's not really. The reality is we all have to
- 3:17work to get the things that we want in our life.
- 3:20Even in personal development, there's work that you have to
- 3:22do. Things don't always just flow
- 3:24into our lives. We have to put out effort to get
- 3:27things to line up for ourselves and to create the opportunities
- 3:30that we want. So baseline, we can understand
- 3:34there is a level of effort and energy that we have to invest
- 3:38into being the creator of our lives.
- 3:40OK, so we've got that and here's the reality.
- 3:44No matter how powerful your coaches or your therapists or
- 3:47your practitioners or your mentors are, no matter how
- 3:51amazing or incredible they are, you will only get the results
- 3:55that you want in your life. When you put in this type of
- 3:57work, it almost never comes from passively cruising through your
- 4:02life or passively consuming content and not taking any
- 4:05action on it or waiting for something to happen.
- 4:09There is an element of action that is required for you to
- 4:12create transformation. We talked about that idea.
- 4:15Insight plus action equals transformation, and it cannot
- 4:19come from being passive in your life.
- 4:22This is the kind of work that we're describing now.
- 4:25People often think that they can skirt around this kind of effort
- 4:28and work. They think that they just need
- 4:29the right tool, the perfect strategy, the right person.
- 4:32They need to invest more. But it's not those external
- 4:36factors that predict whether someone will get the results
- 4:39they want. What it is, is there is a direct
- 4:43correlation between a level of commitment that someone brings
- 4:47and the impact that they'll be able to create.
- 4:49It's true sometimes an investment of time or money or
- 4:52energy, a high fee of some kind that can draw out a person's
- 4:56commitment. No doubt we see this in
- 4:58coaching. We see this in mentorship.
- 5:00We see this in any type of relationship where you are
- 5:03investing in yourself to learn or grow and it's because you
- 5:07have more skin in the game when you invest time, money or
- 5:09energy. We get that and we see this
- 5:12often with entrepreneurship, specifically with different
- 5:15coaching programs. It's often the people who invest
- 5:18in themselves to a higher degree that have a higher commitment
- 5:22level because they have more on the line, just like I was
- 5:25saying, more skin in the game. But what most people miss is
- 5:30that it's not the fee, it's not the amount of time, it's not the
- 5:35amount of resources that will create the results.
- 5:38It's not even the person that you're investing in to be your
- 5:42coach, mentor, practitioner. It's what you do with that
- 5:46heightened commitment that you have as a result that matters.
- 5:50It is the commitment that you bring to your work that matters.
- 5:56What gets you results and impact.
- 5:58And I've learned this over and over again in my businesses, and
- 6:01I've also seen it in myself, in my own work.
- 6:05The people who get true transformation are high agency
- 6:08people. They're high performers.
- 6:10They show up, they're ready to be coached.
- 6:12They want to take risks, and they will try over and over
- 6:15again, even if they make mistakes.
- 6:17They don't wait to be inspired. They will take consistent
- 6:21action, even if it's messy. They'll come to calls with
- 6:24questions and not just complaints about life.
- 6:28Those are the kind of people that are bringing commitment and
- 6:31seeing the impact that they can have in the world.
- 6:35And this is true of myself. When I look back at periods of
- 6:37time in my life where I wasn't getting the transformation or
- 6:41the results that I wanted, no matter how hard I worked, I can
- 6:44see in hindsight that it's because I wasn't fully committed
- 6:47to the process. I wasn't following through on
- 6:50the action that I said I was going to take.
- 6:52I was distracted. I was allowing myself to be
- 6:55distracted. I was procrastinating.
- 6:56I was running through reasons in my brain why I couldn't get the
- 6:59results that I wanted. They were excuses like I don't
- 7:03have enough time. There's so much going on, I
- 7:05don't have the right tools. I can remember those thoughts
- 7:09going through my head during these times where I was not
- 7:13progressing, where I was not growing or evolving or getting
- 7:16the results that I wanted. And even if those things were
- 7:19true, which they weren't by the way, if I had been taking
- 7:22radical ownership at the time, I very well could have remedied
- 7:25them in no time. But in reality, it was my
- 7:29commitment that wasn't there. I wasn't committed to doing the
- 7:33work. And this is different than the
- 7:35sentiment of you have to work hard for everything.
- 7:38That's not what I'm saying. But I did need to be taking
- 7:42inspired action and I needed to be showing up more prepared and
- 7:46with more consistency. Those things were all lacking,
- 7:48which is why my impact at the time was subpar in my mind.
- 7:53I think if you were to look back at your own life, you'd probably
- 7:55be able to see a version of that at some point as well.
- 7:59And I think about this so often. Here's what I want more of in
- 8:03our society. I want less perfectionism, more
- 8:08boldness, more courage, more radical ownership of what is
- 8:11happening in our lives, and frankly, more messy action.
- 8:15And I tell myself this all the time.
- 8:18Move despite the fear, Steph, move.
- 8:20Even if it's messy, because that messy action will inform you so
- 8:25much faster than not taking the action that you need to take.
- 8:30There was a time, I'm told the story before, when a speaker
- 8:34scanned the crowd at a personal development seminar that I was
- 8:37at. And he locked eyes directly with
- 8:39me as he was looking out into the lights.
- 8:43And he said, where are you hiding in your life?
- 8:45Because no one is coming to save you.
- 8:47And I felt like he was talking directly to me because he was
- 8:50looking right at me. And it really stuck.
- 8:53It stuck with me because it was very true then and it's very
- 8:56true now. Nobody's coming to save me at
- 8:58the end of the day. Nobody is coming to save and
- 9:00build my business. Nobody's going to protect and
- 9:03serve my marriage. Nobody's going to do my job
- 9:05raising my stepdaughters. Nobody's going to save me from
- 9:08my own fears that are holding me back or keeping me in resistance
- 9:13or keeping me low frequency. It's on me.
- 9:17It's my right and it's my privilege to do that.
- 9:19And the moment that we all stop waiting to be saved or thinking
- 9:23that something external is going to come in and save the day,
- 9:27that's the moment we realize that no coach, no program, no
- 9:30amount of money can do the work for us.
- 9:33Something shifts and it is empowering.
- 9:35It's freedom actually. When my clients truly shift into
- 9:39this, they stop asking what should I do?
- 9:42And they start declaring, here's what I'm going to do.
- 9:46They stop seeking approval from people outside of themselves and
- 9:48they start trusting their own instincts, self trust, Oh my
- 9:52gosh, one of the greatest gifts. They stop waiting for clarity or
- 9:55confidence and they start creating it through their own
- 9:59action because confidence is actually a result of the action.
- 10:03That's when people become truly empowered and then they become
- 10:06unstoppable. Not because they found the magic
- 10:09bullet. Not because they found the exact
- 10:12right person to help them or the exact right eating plan, like
- 10:16with my Next Level Nutrition coaching clients.
- 10:18And not because they've had the perfect life altering insight,
- 10:22but because they finally taken ownership of their own
- 10:26transformation. When they realize how powerful
- 10:29they are and that the power was always there, that's when the
- 10:33real magic happens. No one's coming to save me.
- 10:37No one is coming to save you. And that's great news in my mind
- 10:39because it means that the power to transform is within us and it
- 10:44has been all along. So let's use it.
- 10:47Let's use it team. I think this is really exciting
- 10:50news. So in conclusion, on another
- 10:53episode about the work, there is hard work out there.
- 10:59There is the idea that we must work hard all the time, but
- 11:03there is also this kind of aligned action.
- 11:07There is inspired work that we can do that actually takes us to
- 11:11the dreams that we want to create in our life.
- 11:13And that's the work that must be done.
- 11:15We must take the ownership and take the responsibility so that
- 11:19we can go out there and create the powers within us to do that
- 11:23kind of work. And I think that's really
- 11:25exciting. It's so much about the
- 11:27commitment that we bring to the things that matter to us.
- 11:30And that commitment creates the momentum that we need to take,
- 11:34the inspired action that leads to the dreams, that leads to all
- 11:37the good stuff that we want in our lives.
- 11:39So thank you for listening to yet another nuanced conversation
- 11:43about a complicated topic. I appreciate you all so much.
