- 1:50All right, guys, let's get into the show.
- 1:53Are you ready?
- 1:53I know I am.
- 1:54This is the last time I'm talking about
- 1:56this, because it's the end of our master
- 1:57topic.
- 1:58Build a life you don't need to escape
- 2:00from.
- 2:02It's not something you just hear in the
- 2:04movies.
- 2:04Series five, show number 34, and today's granular
- 2:08topic to bang this topic in, are you
- 2:12actually excited to wake up to your life?
- 2:16Series five, show 34, episode number seven.
- 2:20Great topic.
- 2:21Welcome, everyone, to, again, the ever-popular Inspirations
- 2:26for Your Life show.
- 2:28I'm John Seymourly.
- 2:30I am a serial entrepreneur, in case you
- 2:33guys didn't know that.
- 2:34I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 2:38host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at Montgomery
- 2:44State University, and a passionate lifelong learner.
- 2:48And I'm so grateful now to be a
- 2:50published author.
- 2:52Yes.
- 2:52So, we spent the week together talking about
- 2:56building a life you don't need to escape
- 2:58from.
- 3:00And today, I'm bringing you everything full circle,
- 3:05together, with one very personal question.
- 3:08What is that?
- 3:08Are you actually excited to wake up to
- 3:12your life?
- 3:14You know, when I meet new people, one
- 3:15of the first things I ask them is,
- 3:17what is it that makes you want to
- 3:19get out of bed every morning?
- 3:21And they look at me like I'm funny.
- 3:22I'm like, no, I want to know what
- 3:24motivates you.
- 3:26Okay?
- 3:27Ladies and gentlemen, you can achieve goals, earn
- 3:30recognition, stay incredibly busy, and keep building for
- 3:34tomorrow.
- 3:35But if the life you're creating doesn't feel
- 3:38meaningful when nobody else is watching, it's worth
- 3:43asking this important question.
- 3:50It's all that the achievement is actually building,
- 3:53or is it just kind of leading us
- 3:55nowhere?
- 3:56Today, let's explore 30 ways to create a
- 3:59life you genuinely want to wake up to.
- 4:03Are you ready?
- 4:03I know I am.
- 4:04Number one, decide what a good life means
- 4:07to you.
- 4:08Before you build a good life, define one.
- 4:12What does it actually look and feel like
- 4:14for you?
- 4:15Success becomes much easier to pursue when you're
- 4:19not chasing somebody else's definition.
- 4:23Number two, stop copying somebody else's definition.
- 4:27What works beautifully for another person may definitely
- 4:32not work for you, and it could make
- 4:33you miserable.
- 4:35See, their career, lifestyle, priorities, or ambitions don't
- 4:41automatically belong in your life, and you shouldn't
- 4:44expect them to.
- 4:45Build according to your own values.
- 4:49You know what I'm talking about, guys, your
- 4:51core values.
- 4:53So build around what gives your life meaning.
- 4:57Identify what makes your days feel worthwhile.
- 5:00Meaning can come from relationships, creating, learning, helping
- 5:06others, building something, solving problems, or experiencing life
- 5:10more deeply than you thought possible.
- 5:13Number four, create mornings worth waking up for.
- 5:18See, your morning shouldn't always begin with dread
- 5:22about everything waiting for you.
- 5:25Give yourself something meaningful to anticipate, even if
- 5:29it's small.
- 5:31Number five, choose work you can respect.
- 5:35You don't have to love every moment of
- 5:38work, but ideally, you should be able to
- 5:42respect what you're doing, how you're doing it,
- 5:46and what your effort contributes.
- 5:50Important, right?
- 5:52Number six, build relationships you want to maintain.
- 5:57Strong relationships require time, communication, honesty, and of
- 6:03course, effort.
- 6:04Invest in people you generally want to remain
- 6:08part of your life.
- 6:11Number seven, make room for experiences that matter.
- 6:15I think a lot of people, you know,
- 6:17they chase their tail around, and they wonder,
- 6:18why am I not happy?
- 6:21It's simple, because you're chasing somebody else's dream.
- 6:25A full calendar isn't necessarily a full life,
- 6:28guys.
- 6:30Leave room for experiences that make you curious,
- 6:33connected, challenged, excited, or simply happy to just
- 6:38be there.
- 6:39Number eight, stop sacrificing everything for later.
- 6:44Preparing for the future matters, but don't sacrifice
- 6:47every meaningful part of today for tomorrow that
- 6:52continually moves further away.
- 6:57Number nine, guys, create something you're proud of,
- 7:02you know, something that makes you want to
- 7:05continue.
- 7:07Build work habits, relationships, projects, and routines that
- 7:12you don't constantly fantasize about abandoning.
- 7:17Create things you actually want to keep developing.
- 7:21Number 10, build freedom into your definition of
- 7:24success.
- 7:26Success isn't only about having more, it can
- 7:30also mean having choices, freedom over your time,
- 7:34attention, direction, and priorities can be enormously valuable
- 7:41too.
- 7:43So number 11, let your values, this is
- 7:46important, influence your choices.
- 7:51Values shouldn't exist only as words.
- 7:54They should influence what you accept, reject, pursue,
- 7:59protect, and prioritize.
- 8:04Number 12, stop designing your life for appearances.
- 8:10That's over.
- 8:12A life can look impressive from, well, I'm
- 8:16going to say the sidelines or outside and
- 8:18feel completely wrong from the inside.
- 8:21So don't build primarily for applause, approval, or
- 8:25comparison.
- 8:27Number 13, choose experiences over unnecessary approval.
- 8:32Sometimes living authentically means making choices other people
- 8:38wouldn't make.
- 8:40You don't need universal approval to enjoy a
- 8:42life that genuinely fits you, no.
- 8:47Number 14, build a life that feels good,
- 8:50privately.
- 8:52Here's an important caveat, a test.
- 8:55When nobody is watching, posting, praising, or evaluating
- 9:00you, do you still like your life?
- 9:04Tough question, right?
- 9:05Private satisfaction means more than public satisfaction.
- 9:09Number 15, make your home somewhere you enjoy
- 9:17returning to.
- 9:20Home doesn't need to impress everyone else.
- 9:23It should be a place where you can
- 9:26recover, think, feel comfortable, and enjoy spending time.
- 9:32I think a lot of people, when we
- 9:34think about spending time, they acknowledge it, but
- 9:41then they really don't get into that moment.
- 9:43They don't really believe what's going on.
- 9:45I think that's a very important thing.
- 9:48Number 16, create what work you have and
- 9:53make sure it doesn't consume your identity.
- 9:56Work can be meaningful without becoming everything you
- 10:01are.
- 10:02You see, you're still a person when the
- 10:05meeting actually ends.
- 10:07The computer shuts down and the project is
- 10:09finished.
- 10:11So what I want to say is, number
- 10:1417, protect the people who make life richer,
- 10:18who give you the experiences that make you
- 10:20so happy to get up every morning.
- 10:22Don't continually sacrifice important relationships because something less
- 10:28important feels urgent.
- 10:30Protect time for the people who genuinely add
- 10:33meaning to your life.
- 10:36And I think as you traverse through life,
- 10:38you're going to be like, I don't exactly
- 10:40know what that is, but later on, you'll
- 10:41be like, wait a minute, I get it
- 10:43now.
- 10:43This makes a lot of sense, and I
- 10:45guess I should pay more attention to it,
- 10:48right?
- 10:49And I think that's going to have an
- 10:51interesting moment for you, right?
- 10:54A moment that maybe you'll be like, oh,
- 10:56wait a minute, is that really the right
- 10:59thing or is that the wrong thing?
- 11:02And I know that can sound, right?
- 11:08But I think the most important thing is
- 11:11that it does something pretty amazing, okay?
- 11:16It does something amazing because it gets you
- 11:19to see that your life is more than
- 11:24just a facade.
- 11:27It's more than just one moment.
- 11:31It's a culmination of things.
- 11:34It's learning, it's experiences, it's growth, it's challenges.
- 11:40Number 18, guys, give yourself meaningful things to
- 11:45anticipate.
- 11:46Hmm, what do I mean by that?
- 11:52Anticipation, well, it can bring energy into ordinary
- 11:55weeks.
- 11:56A conversation, trip, event, project, meal, hobby, or
- 12:02a new experience can give you something positive
- 12:05to look toward.
- 12:07Number 19, stop waiting for retirement to start
- 12:10living.
- 12:11Live now.
- 12:12Don't spend decades telling yourself you'll finally enjoy
- 12:16life later.
- 12:17Build the pieces of life you want now
- 12:20while you're still enjoying and working toward the
- 12:23future.
- 12:23Enjoy the process.
- 12:26Number 20, build health into the life you
- 12:29want.
- 12:31A future becomes much harder to enjoy if
- 12:36reaching it requires continually neglecting yourself.
- 12:40And, you know, a lot of times I've
- 12:43learned this, you neglect yourself not because you
- 12:45want to, but because you're putting somebody else's
- 12:51priorities above yours.
- 12:55And when that happens, you're saying yes to
- 12:58them, but you're really saying no to yourself,
- 13:00and you're going to be resentful for it,
- 13:05and you don't want to do that, guys.
- 13:07Make physical and mental well-being part of
- 13:11the design rather than an afterthought, right?
- 13:17That should be like the main event.
- 13:20I think that's an important piece.
- 13:24But here again, a lot of people just
- 13:25don't get it.
- 13:26They don't understand what that means.
- 13:31They don't get it.
- 13:31They don't understand it.
- 13:34But if you could take a moment to
- 13:38become aware of your surroundings, aware of your
- 13:44challenges, aware of your life, aware of where
- 13:48you're going, you might be able to say,
- 13:49hey, wait a minute, I can do this.
- 13:52Yeah, you can.
- 13:54Number 21, guys, I ask you to create
- 13:58memories.
- 14:02Create memories, right?
- 14:06That's a very, very important one for us
- 14:12to acknowledge.
- 14:14You need to create those memories.
- 14:18And those memories, guys, are going to take
- 14:22you to an entirely different place.
- 14:26Number 21, create memories while building success.
- 14:31Don't make every year solely about accomplishing the
- 14:35next objective.
- 14:36Make room for moments you'll remember for reasons
- 14:41that have nothing to do with productivity.
- 14:44Number 22, let achievement support your life.
- 14:50You see, ladies and gentlemen, achievement should create
- 14:52opportunities, resources, confidence, choices or impact that make
- 14:59your life richer and fuller.
- 15:01Let success serve something larger than just itself.
- 15:07Interesting concept.
- 15:09But when we embrace that, our life can
- 15:12change quite a bit.
- 15:13Number 23, stop letting achievement replace your life.
- 15:21There will always be another goal if achievement
- 15:25becomes the only place you allow yourself to
- 15:29feel valuable.
- 15:30You constantly need another accomplishment to feel complete,
- 15:35to feel whole.
- 15:38And I know that's not what you want.
- 15:41But you wind up down this pathway because
- 15:46of other people's thoughts, other people's beliefs.
- 15:53I think that's a very important thing that
- 15:56we have to recognize.
- 15:58We have to realize what this means to
- 16:01us.
- 16:01And how this can make a difference in
- 16:04our lives, right?
- 16:06That difference, guys, can be something that literally
- 16:10changes who you are, right?
- 16:16Changes who you are.
- 16:19And that's pretty important if you ask me.
- 16:25Number 24, build enough instead of endlessly chasing
- 16:30more.
- 16:32More isn't automatically better, guys.
- 16:36At some point, ask what enough looks like.
- 16:39Enough money, enough commitment, enough possessions, enough recognition.
- 16:45Knowing what is sufficient can create freedom.
- 16:51So freedom is a big choice.
- 16:55A choice that many people give up because
- 16:59they're trying to do something else that may
- 17:01not matter as much.
- 17:07I think that's really the big question.
- 17:12How do we do that, right?
- 17:15How do we do that?
- 17:22I think that's an important piece, right?
- 17:26An important piece of where we're actually going.
- 17:34I'm just saying, guys, that's a very, very
- 17:37important thing.
- 17:41A very, very important thing.
- 17:46But we've got to be aware of these
- 17:48things, okay?
- 17:50Number 25, know what you're unwilling to sacrifice.
- 17:55That sounds like a real interesting one, but
- 17:58it's the truth.
- 18:00Decide what success isn't allowed to cost you.
- 18:07Your health, your integrity, your relationships, your time,
- 18:12peace.
- 18:13Knowing your boundaries makes difficult decisions clearer, clearer.
- 18:22That's what it's about.
- 18:27So if you could be clear on one
- 18:29thing in life, I want to ask you,
- 18:30what would that be?
- 18:31Would that be having more time?
- 18:35What would actually that be?
- 18:40What would that be?
- 18:42I think it might get us to ask
- 18:45some important questions.
- 18:47Some questions that maybe we're afraid to ask,
- 18:50but these questions can make a huge difference
- 18:52in our life if we embrace them.
- 18:55You see, a lot of people think that
- 18:58if you do the same thing over and
- 18:59over again, and it doesn't work, you just
- 19:03keep doing it eventually until it works.
- 19:04No, that's Einstein's lesson to us.
- 19:08That's insanity.
- 19:09You don't do the same thing over and
- 19:11over again and expect the results.
- 19:13That is insanity, okay?
- 19:18That is very important, guys, for you to
- 19:20recognize and to understand.
- 19:25If you just did something to go through
- 19:27the motions, do you think you'd enjoy it?
- 19:32I'm going to tell you, probably not.
- 19:35And not because you don't want to, maybe
- 19:38because you're burned out.
- 19:40You're burned out, right?
- 19:43That's a very key thing.
- 19:46Knowing that people expect you to change your
- 19:51life and make sacrifices because of them.
- 19:57So my question is, why the heck are
- 19:59you doing that?
- 20:02Why are you putting their needs before you?
- 20:07I'm not saying you can't do it once
- 20:08or twice, but don't let it dare ruin
- 20:11who you are.
- 20:13Number 26, guys, create a future that excites
- 20:15you.
- 20:16When you imagine the direction you're heading, there
- 20:20should be something there that genuinely interests you.
- 20:25Don't build a future solely because it sounds
- 20:28impressive.
- 20:31Number 27, make today's choice support that future.
- 20:37That future.
- 20:41The future isn't built, guys, in one enormous
- 20:44decision.
- 20:45It's built through repeated choices.
- 20:48What you do today should make tomorrow's life
- 20:51more possible.
- 20:56Number 28, build something worth waking up.
- 21:05That's powerful, guys.
- 21:07Give yourself reasons to get out of bed
- 21:09every morning that extend beyond just the obligation
- 21:12of what you've committed to doing.
- 21:15Build projects.
- 21:18Explore relationships.
- 21:22Take new experiences and set new goals and
- 21:25paths that create genuine energy.
- 21:31Genuine energy.
- 21:33You have the power, guys, to do this.
- 21:35Number 29, don't escape your life.
- 21:38Why don't you start designing the life that
- 21:40you've been waiting for your entire life?
- 21:45If you're constantly counting down until Friday, vacation,
- 21:51retirement, or the moment you can get away,
- 21:55pay attention for once.
- 21:59Maybe something doesn't simply need escaping.
- 22:03Maybe it needs redesigning.
- 22:07Maybe the thing you're missing is a change
- 22:13so you don't burn out.
- 22:16Number 30, create a life you genuinely want
- 22:19to wake up to.
- 22:23This is where everything we've discussed this week
- 22:25comes full circle and comes together.
- 22:30So protect your energy.
- 22:34Create room for yourself.
- 22:36Put effort where it matters.
- 22:39Enjoy the present moment.
- 22:42Allow your life to evolve as you do.
- 22:48These are powerful things, guys.
- 22:51I hope these are not just words going
- 22:52in one ear.
- 22:53I hope you're really paying attention to them.
- 22:56And then, ladies and gentlemen, build something you
- 23:00actually want to live and be part of.
- 23:04As I get ready to close not only
- 23:06today's show but this whole topic of the
- 23:10week, building a life you don't want to
- 23:14escape from, I want you to think beyond
- 23:20accomplishments for just a moment.
- 23:23Can you do that?
- 23:26Imagine there are no titles.
- 23:29I know we hear things all over the
- 23:31world like, this person's this, this person's that.
- 23:34I'm not saying titles are bad, okay?
- 23:38But what I'm saying is this is something
- 23:42that can make a difference if you really
- 23:48try, if you really try.
- 24:00But you got to try.
- 24:03I don't just mean once.
- 24:07Again, imagine no titles.
- 24:10No audience for just a moment.
- 24:12No social media.
- 24:14Whoa, I must be really knocking some people.
- 24:16No applause.
- 24:17No pats on the back.
- 24:22Nobody that you're trying to impress.
- 24:25Could you do that for just one day?
- 24:30And if you could do that, would you
- 24:32still want the life you're building?
- 24:39One of the joys I have in being
- 24:41an author, being a serial entrepreneur, engineer, market
- 24:45specialist, video producer, graduate student, passionate lifelong learner,
- 24:49I love my life.
- 24:50I love the things that are happening in
- 24:52it.
- 24:53Are there frustrations sometimes?
- 24:55Sure there are.
- 24:56But I learn from them.
- 24:59And they help me each day to become
- 25:03better.
- 25:04So when those things rear their heads, I'm
- 25:06like, I know the way.
- 25:09See, ladies and gentlemen, that's a powerful question.
- 25:13Because success can sometimes become something we perform
- 25:17instead of something we experience.
- 25:24Experience.
- 25:25Maybe you want ambition and achievement.
- 25:28Great.
- 25:29Maybe you want meaningful work, stronger relationships, more
- 25:36authentic ones, more freedom, better health, more experiences,
- 25:42continued learning, more time.
- 25:47Just explore things that make you curious, that
- 25:51put a smile on your face.
- 25:53You see, great things are happening if you
- 26:00pay attention.
- 26:01Those things don't have to compete.
- 26:05The goal isn't to abandon responsibility, let's be
