- 0:44Speaker 3: Hailey's journey is one of.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Incredible highs and challenging lows. A former gymnast, you found
- 0:50Speaker 2: her passion for CrossFit at just fourteen years old. She
- 0:54Speaker 2: quickly rose to elite status, earning the title of Fittest
- 0:58Speaker 2: teen on Earth at the twenty eighteen Crossbit Games. Since
- 1:03Speaker 2: moving to the individual division, she's established herself as one
- 1:06Speaker 2: of the most consistent athletes in the sport, finishing fourth
- 1:10Speaker 2: in the world in twenty twenty and securing top ten
- 1:13Speaker 2: finishes in every Crossbit game's appearance until her break in
- 1:17Speaker 2: twenty twenty three. In this episode, we dive deep into
- 1:20Speaker 2: Haley's story of resilience and healing. We chat about the
- 1:24Speaker 2: weight of expectations, and she opens up about the intense
- 1:27Speaker 2: pressure she felt after moving to the individual division and
- 1:31Speaker 2: how negative social media comments impacted her body image and
- 1:35Speaker 2: her relationship with food. We also talk about finding a
- 1:38Speaker 2: balance and that necessary year off from competition that helped
- 1:42Speaker 2: her focus on both her mental and physical health. Haley
- 1:46Speaker 2: talks to me about how she rediscovered the joy in
- 1:48Speaker 2: training and learned to prioritize her wellness over purely burning calories,
- 1:54Speaker 2: and last but not least, we also reflect.
- 1:57Speaker 3: On her remarkable career thus far, including being.
- 1:59Speaker 2: The youngest female at sixteen to qualify for regionals and
- 2:03Speaker 2: her fifth place finish at the twenty twenty four CrossFit
- 2:06Speaker 2: Games following her comeback. There are so many things to
- 2:10Speaker 2: love about this conversation, but I really adore her insights
- 2:14Speaker 2: into life beyond the.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Box that's what crossfitters call their gym.
- 2:18Speaker 2: It concludes her love for Disney movies and her ever
- 2:22Speaker 2: growing family of animals, from cats and an Australian shepherd
- 2:26Speaker 2: to an axe a Lottel, which I had never heard
- 2:28Speaker 2: of before this conversation. And for permit crabs. Make sure

- 2:51Speaker 2: let's get to it. Let's get to hurdling.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Today. I am down with Haley Adams.
- 3:02Speaker 2: She is a CrossFit athlete, a new red Bull athlete.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Haley, how we doing, Welcome to the show.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, I'm so excited. So many amazing things
- 3:12Speaker 1: happening lately, and yeah, I just excited to sit down
- 3:15Speaker 1: the chat.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So many amazing things happening lately. Clue me in. What's up?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, So number one being I did just sign my
- 3:24Speaker 1: Red Bull deal and it's been an amazing few months
- 3:27Speaker 1: with them already. I've gotten to do so many cool things.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Our season's getting started, so just ramping up for that,
- 3:33Speaker 1: so in the gym a lot training, and yeah, I
- 3:36Speaker 1: just think it's going to be a really good year.
- 3:38Speaker 1: So I've just been super excited and looking forward to
- 3:41Speaker 1: everything to come.
- 3:42Speaker 3: A really good year.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And you're in the middle of the CrossFit Open. For
- 3:47Speaker 2: those that aren't familiar with the CrossFit Open, give me
- 3:50Speaker 2: the rundown.
- 3:50Speaker 3: How does this work?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, so the CrossFit Open is kind of like the
- 3:54Speaker 1: beginning of our season. It doesn't really matter exactly for
- 3:58Speaker 1: the super early athletes, but we still have to, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 1: do it to continue. So it's something that everyone can do,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Like anyone in the world can sign up and do
- 4:07Speaker 1: these workouts and submit their score. So it's for three weeks,
- 4:10Speaker 1: one workout a week, and yeah, everyone just gets to
- 4:12Speaker 1: throw down together and it really brings community. Yeah. So
- 4:16Speaker 1: we've just finished up the second week and one more
- 4:19Speaker 1: week of that. But yeah, so cool to throw down
- 4:22Speaker 1: the community.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it is cool.
- 4:24Speaker 2: It is cool because, like you said, everyone around the
- 4:28Speaker 2: entire globe is doing the same workouts and kind of
- 4:31Speaker 2: seeing where they stack up. Now, this is your tenth
- 4:35Speaker 2: season technically as a games athlete. Yes, wow, how does
- 4:40Speaker 2: it feel when I say that to you?
- 4:43Speaker 1: Honestly, I don't even know where the time has went,
- 4:45Speaker 1: Like I cannot believe that it's been ten years and
- 4:48Speaker 1: not just like ten years of doing crossed, it like
- 4:50Speaker 1: ten seasons of training and competing so I really hope
- 4:55Speaker 1: the ten's going to be special. But yeah, it's a
- 4:59Speaker 1: long time.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Sure, it is a long time.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Now. Again, when you say that ten years as a
- 5:05Speaker 2: CrossFit athlete, what comes to mind? I mean, so much
- 5:09Speaker 2: has happened during that time period for you, And I'm
- 5:11Speaker 2: sure ten years ago, when this journey really began, you
- 5:14Speaker 2: never anticipated that it would bring you to this point.
- 5:18Speaker 1: No, I never thought that I would be where I'm
- 5:20Speaker 1: at right now and that this is my life and
- 5:22Speaker 1: that this is my job. But the one thing that
- 5:24Speaker 1: stands out probably is just like how hard I have
- 5:27Speaker 1: worked through everything, Like I've had lots of ups and downs,
- 5:31Speaker 1: lots of downs, but just the thing that I'm most
- 5:34Speaker 1: proud of is how hard I've worked over the last
- 5:36Speaker 1: ten years. Because I don't give myself enough credit, but
- 5:40Speaker 1: it's really hard this sport and it's not for the week,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and I've just put in so much work, even as
- 5:47Speaker 1: like a young girl, so even to know so I'm
- 5:51Speaker 1: the most proud of that.
- 5:52Speaker 2: For those that aren't familiar with your story, give me
- 5:54Speaker 2: some context as to what initially drew you to CrossFit,
- 5:59Speaker 2: because for me, it can be a really intimidating sport.
- 6:02Speaker 3: To get into.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yeah, so I've played sports my entire life, like basically
- 6:07Speaker 1: everything that you can think of. But earlier in my
- 6:10Speaker 1: teenage years, I was a gymnast and had been doing
- 6:13Speaker 1: gymnastics for a while, and I was just getting a
- 6:15Speaker 1: little bit burnt out and there was a CrossFit gym
- 6:20Speaker 1: right beside my gymnastics gym, and they had like these
- 6:22Speaker 1: big seat through windows so you could see and I
- 6:25Speaker 1: saw these women like throwing these weights around and like
- 6:28Speaker 1: hanging from the pull up barn doing pull ups and
- 6:30Speaker 1: jumping rope, and I was like, I really want to
- 6:33Speaker 1: try that. Like, I'm so sick of gymnastics. I've done
- 6:36Speaker 1: everything else. I just need something new. And so I
- 6:38Speaker 1: did all my research on CrossFit and begged my dad
- 6:42Speaker 1: to take me because I wanted to do it so bad.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I was like fourteen years old, I think, and then
- 6:47Speaker 1: he finally took me. I did my intro class, and
- 6:50Speaker 1: literally the rest is history. Fell in love.
- 6:53Speaker 3: The rest is history.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And having that background in gymnastics is actually super beneficial
- 6:58Speaker 2: for someone in CrossFit bea because there are a lot
- 7:01Speaker 2: of movements relative to the sport, right.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Like I had no problem really learning the genetics movements
- 7:07Speaker 1: because I just picked it up super fast.
- 7:09Speaker 2: What would you say at the beginning was the most
- 7:11Speaker 2: intimidating part of the sport?
- 7:14Speaker 1: Oh, the most intimidating part for me was definitely the
- 7:17Speaker 1: barbelle because although I had played a lot of sports,
- 7:19Speaker 1: I had never really strength trained, so I just felt
- 7:23Speaker 1: that was the hardest thing for me to pick up.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And seeing how strong those girls were, I was like
- 7:28Speaker 1: not even close to it, So that was really like,
- 7:31Speaker 1: it is still as hard for me to get stronger,
- 7:33Speaker 1: But that, for sure at the beginning was very intimidating.
- 7:37Speaker 2: It's entirely understandable and something that we hear often, especially
- 7:41Speaker 2: from women, this fear almost of I don't know.
- 7:45Speaker 3: What to do with this thing.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I don't know how to do anything with a barbell
- 7:48Speaker 2: in a way that's safe. For someone that's interested in
- 7:51Speaker 2: integrating barbell movements into their routine more regularly, what advice
- 7:56Speaker 2: would you have for them?
- 7:57Speaker 1: My advice would be, for sure, learn the technique, because
- 8:01Speaker 1: if you're just throwing around waight and you don't know
- 8:04Speaker 1: you know the correct form, you're gonna hurt yourself. And
- 8:06Speaker 1: I was guilty of that. I had some really sketchy
- 8:09Speaker 1: videos back in my day of just lifting heavy and
- 8:12Speaker 1: not knowing how, but yeah, just learning the form correctly
- 8:15Speaker 1: and making sure that before you add on a bunch
- 8:17Speaker 1: of weight, like you have all that down and then
- 8:20Speaker 1: you can slowly start to add weight and then before
- 8:22Speaker 1: you know it, like you're lifting what you couldn't a
- 8:25Speaker 1: year ago. And that's what's my favorite part about it,
- 8:27Speaker 1: is like you're doing things that you didn't think you
- 8:29Speaker 1: could do. So strength training is really cool in that aspect.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And before you knew it, you were really succeeding within
- 8:37Speaker 2: the CrossFit world. Talk to me a little bit about
- 8:40Speaker 2: when you realize just how much potential you could have
- 8:43Speaker 2: within this sport.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah. So just a couple months after I'd started CrossFit
- 8:48Speaker 1: was my first open and they had the Teenage Games
- 8:51Speaker 1: and I was like, wow, I really want to try
- 8:53Speaker 1: that and like make it, but I don't know if
- 8:54Speaker 1: I'm good enough. And I think I actually ended up
- 8:57Speaker 1: winning the open that year in my age group. I
- 8:59Speaker 1: did yeah, and qualified for the Teenage Games within like
- 9:03Speaker 1: just a couple months of doing crossfits. So I think
- 9:05Speaker 1: from then on, like I really believed in myself and
- 9:08Speaker 1: it sparked confidence of like whoa you can be good
- 9:10Speaker 1: at this.
- 9:11Speaker 2: You can be good at it, and you continued on
- 9:14Speaker 2: to be good at it now knowing what you know now,
- 9:18Speaker 2: when we think about those early years, is there anything
- 9:21Speaker 2: that you would have done differently from the get go?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Honestly, like, looking at my whole journey, I wouldn't change
- 9:31Speaker 1: a thing, but if I was giving advice to someone else,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I would definitely say just to have more fun with
- 9:37Speaker 1: it and don't put so much pressure on yourself and
- 9:40Speaker 1: like still be a kid. You know, you don't get
- 9:43Speaker 1: that time back in your life. Doesn't mean you can't
- 9:45Speaker 1: work hard and you know, make sacrifices, but you also
- 9:49Speaker 1: only live once and you're only a teenager once. So yeah,
- 9:53Speaker 1: that would be my advice. But I would change a
- 9:56Speaker 1: thing in my journey, but just giving it to someone else.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And you've certainly, you know, as you said, some highs
- 10:02Speaker 2: and certainly a lot of lows within your own journey.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Let's talk a little bit about the lows.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I don't want to start with what's going on in
- 10:10Speaker 2: twenty twenty three and getting back into the swing of
- 10:12Speaker 2: things in.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Twenty twenty four.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to go back before that, when you
- 10:16Speaker 2: did start to experience a lot of success within the
- 10:19Speaker 2: sport and a lot of eyes on you. What would
- 10:22Speaker 2: you say was the most difficult aspect of that?
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's hard when you have eyes on
- 10:29Speaker 1: you constantly, and you're also growing up, so your body's changing.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You're competing against these women and people are like you
- 10:35Speaker 1: start to see like negative comments about yourself, and you're
- 10:38Speaker 1: also just like a young girl. So having all of
- 10:41Speaker 1: that at such a young age is really hard. And
- 10:44Speaker 1: it's not for the week for sure. But I put
- 10:47Speaker 1: so much pressure on myself when I started competing as
- 10:50Speaker 1: an individual, so like an individual technically is like eighteen
- 10:55Speaker 1: and above. So when I aged out of the teenage
- 10:56Speaker 1: division is when I really started to put pressure on
- 10:59Speaker 1: myself because that was like the legit girls, and you know,
- 11:03Speaker 1: everyone watched that, everyone had something to say. So I
- 11:06Speaker 1: would say basically, from like twenty nineteen on, I really
- 11:09Speaker 1: started to like put a ton of pressure on myself.
- 11:12Speaker 3: And what did that look like in practice?
- 11:15Speaker 2: When you say I was putting a lot of pressure
- 11:16Speaker 2: on myself, paint me a picture of not only maybe
- 11:19Speaker 2: what the training would look like, but then what the
- 11:21Speaker 2: inner dialogue looked like.
- 11:23Speaker 1: For you, Yeah, I was definitely overtraining. I was training
- 11:26Speaker 1: so much because I was scared that someone was going
- 11:28Speaker 1: to outwork me, which is not always the best thing
- 11:30Speaker 1: to do, but in my head, that's what I thought
- 11:32Speaker 1: the best thing was. So I was overtraining. I was
- 11:35Speaker 1: constantly thinking about when I was going to compete, or
- 11:38Speaker 1: like how I was going to win, or how I
- 11:39Speaker 1: was going to qualify, or how I was going to
- 11:41Speaker 1: do this and that, Like all that mattered to me
- 11:43Speaker 1: was simply what number I ended up at the end
- 11:46Speaker 1: of the year. That's all I cared about. That tunnel vision.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Nothing else in the world mattered to me. That's all
- 11:51Speaker 1: I cared about.
- 11:53Speaker 3: And so training at least two sessions a day, yeah.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, at least and way too much, way too
- 11:58Speaker 1: much in those two sessions for sure, and not eating
- 12:01Speaker 1: enough everything on top of it just so bad.
- 12:04Speaker 3: I remember I listened to an interview that you did,
- 12:06Speaker 3: and you were talking.
- 12:07Speaker 2: About how like you would go through phases where you'd think, like, okay,
- 12:11Speaker 2: I need to eat lunch, and that lunch was literally
- 12:13Speaker 2: a bag of iceberg lettuce.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, actually that was way back in gymnastics days,
- 12:19Speaker 1: like thinking that I needed to lose weight, so I
- 12:22Speaker 1: was like, Oh, I'm just gonna pack a bag of
- 12:24Speaker 1: lettuce for lunch. I was like twelve, thirteen years old.
- 12:29Speaker 1: So I'd like to say that my issues started when
- 12:33Speaker 1: I was like in an elite individual, but I think
- 12:35Speaker 1: they started like way back when, and I just didn't
- 12:38Speaker 1: realize that it was an issue.
- 12:40Speaker 2: And so as you started to train more, did you
- 12:42Speaker 2: garner an understanding of perhaps at least what type of
- 12:47Speaker 2: nutrition you needed to sustain that so your view on
- 12:51Speaker 2: food changed a little bit.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Yeah, So it was kind of interesting because I knew
- 12:56Speaker 1: what I needed to do as an athlete to feel myself.
- 12:58Speaker 1: But as I got older, I'd say around like twenty
- 13:02Speaker 1: twenty one, I really started to have this other like
- 13:07Speaker 1: brain of certain eating issues and body image issues. So
- 13:12Speaker 1: I knew, on one side, I knew what I needed
- 13:14Speaker 1: to do to feel myself as an athlete, but on
- 13:16Speaker 1: the other side I was dealing with these other issues
- 13:20Speaker 1: is like just completely opposite, you know. So it was
- 13:22Speaker 1: really hard to navigate that because I was like fighting
- 13:25Speaker 1: two battles at once, and it's still as hard. But
- 13:29Speaker 1: those were yeah, not fun.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Times, yeah, of course, and completely understandable. Right, It's so
- 13:34Speaker 2: hard when so many people have exposure to you and
- 13:37Speaker 2: have access to you, especially in the way of the
- 13:40Speaker 2: world and social media. You spoke so beautifully about what
- 13:45Speaker 2: happened to you around your birthday in twenty twenty two.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Can you give me can you pat me a picture?
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah? So, oh my goodness, that was such a not
- 13:54Speaker 1: a good birthday. I was already having a really, really
- 13:56Speaker 1: hard time the last few months after the Games in
- 13:59Speaker 1: twenty twenty I had gotten ninth, which I thought was
- 14:02Speaker 1: the absolute worst thing in the world. Ninth in the world,
- 14:05Speaker 1: by the way, but it was because it was like
- 14:07Speaker 1: my littest placing that I just felt like I was nothing,
- 14:10Speaker 1: no one. Totally not true, but that's all I could
- 14:13Speaker 1: think about. So those next few months I just put
- 14:15Speaker 1: myself in the ground. I was not eating enough. I
- 14:19Speaker 1: was just training NonStop because I was like, I can't
- 14:22Speaker 1: ever let that happen again. But yeah, so basically just
- 14:25Speaker 1: tear myself apart for months, and then my birthday rolls
- 14:29Speaker 1: around and I didn't want to do anything. My parents
- 14:32Speaker 1: were actually in town. They're like, why don't you go
- 14:34Speaker 1: do something like eat cake, blah blah blah. I' was
- 14:36Speaker 1: like no, like just miserable. And then after that, I
- 14:40Speaker 1: honestly just had like a total mental breakdown, Like I
- 14:44Speaker 1: couldn't go to the gym, it was hard to get
- 14:47Speaker 1: out of bed. I went home North Carolina, was not eating,
- 14:51Speaker 1: Like it was one of the darkest times in my life.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Like I looked back on that and I'm like, wow,
- 14:56Speaker 1: I don't even know how I got through that, but
- 14:58Speaker 1: just total breakdown for quite a few weeks, probably even
- 15:03Speaker 1: a month or two. But that was like a total
- 15:06Speaker 1: crisis for me. Like it made me stop and be like,
- 15:09Speaker 1: is this what you want for the rest of your life?
- 15:11Speaker 1: Is this what you want to be known for? Is
- 15:12Speaker 1: this how you want your family and your friends to
- 15:14Speaker 1: see you? Like I was just not the person that
- 15:17Speaker 1: used to be. I was a miserable as a mean
- 15:19Speaker 1: and then I eventually just like cracked and could not
- 15:24Speaker 1: do anything. And you know, it was definitely what I
- 15:27Speaker 1: needed to happen, because I would have just kept going
- 15:30Speaker 1: in my ways. But it was definitely a turning point
- 15:34Speaker 1: in my life for sure.
- 15:35Speaker 2: You talked about going back home to North Carolina. What
- 15:39Speaker 2: was the inner dialogue like when you made the decision
- 15:44Speaker 2: to actually go. Was that something that you had the
- 15:48Speaker 2: knowing that you needed to do or was that more
- 15:51Speaker 2: like external advice thoughts encouraging you to make that trip.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah, So I just didn't want to be alone at
- 15:58Speaker 1: that moment. So I wanted to go with my family
- 16:00Speaker 1: because I was by myself in Cookville. So it's like
- 16:03Speaker 1: I need to go be with people at least just
- 16:06Speaker 1: you know, be with my mom dad. So that was
- 16:08Speaker 1: the reasoning behind that. But I ended up staying for
- 16:11Speaker 1: like quite a while because I just didn't want to
- 16:13Speaker 1: be alone with my thoughts.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:15Speaker 2: And so as you're in an environment where you're surrounded
- 16:19Speaker 2: by people that have so much care and concern for you,
- 16:22Speaker 2: what does the healing journey begin to look like?
- 16:25Speaker 1: I mean, for weeks, I was fighting myself and like
- 16:28Speaker 1: I just felt so angry because I couldn't understand like
- 16:31Speaker 1: going back of like I worked so hard and I
- 16:35Speaker 1: couldn't understand why I couldn't get up and go work
- 16:37Speaker 1: out or like eat or anything. So I was like,
- 16:40Speaker 1: what's wrong with you? So I fought that battle for
- 16:42Speaker 1: a couple of weeks of like you're being lazy or
- 16:44Speaker 1: being like just all this stuff. And then once I
- 16:48Speaker 1: finally weeks later, probably a month later, came to the
- 16:52Speaker 1: choice of not competing. I felt like a thousand pounds
- 16:56Speaker 1: had been lifted off my shoulder. I was like, that's
- 16:58Speaker 1: what it was, you know, And it didn't just instantly
- 17:01Speaker 1: get better. Like it was really hard after that too,
- 17:03Speaker 1: you know, dealing with like the open, starting the season,
- 17:06Speaker 1: starting having to announce everything that it was competing and Yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 1: but once I made that choice was when I could
- 17:12Speaker 1: finally start healing. Like I couldn't start healing in those
- 17:15Speaker 1: weeks even after I went home, because I was just
- 17:18Speaker 1: fighting myself. But once I stopped fighting myself, I felt
- 17:21Speaker 1: like that was the first.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Step announcing everything. Yeah, that was tough talk to me
- 17:26Speaker 2: about that.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I went back and forth for a while to decide
- 17:31Speaker 1: how I wanted to do it. If I just wanted
- 17:33Speaker 1: to be like, hey, guys, I'm just taking the air off,
- 17:35Speaker 1: like you know, I've been doing this for a long time,
- 17:37Speaker 1: blah blah blah. And then I was like, if you actually,
- 17:41Speaker 1: you know, told people the real truth and it shouldn't
- 17:45Speaker 1: be a shock, Like it was pretty op because I
- 17:48Speaker 1: was dealing with something, But if you could just help
- 17:51Speaker 1: one person, then it's worth it. And I went back
- 17:55Speaker 1: and forth for a long time because I was just
- 17:56Speaker 1: like embarrassed, and I was like, I don't really know
- 17:58Speaker 1: if I want to share that, blah blah. But I
- 18:00Speaker 1: was like, you know what, I'm going to share it
- 18:02Speaker 1: because I think that it's going to help someone else
- 18:04Speaker 1: out there, and I think that it could help another
- 18:06Speaker 1: young girl that maybe is going down that track that
- 18:10Speaker 1: I went down. So that's what I landed on, and
- 18:13Speaker 1: I wrote up this really long caption about you know,
- 18:16Speaker 1: being vulnerable and telling the world why I was stepping
- 18:19Speaker 1: out and I wasn't sure. I didn't say i'd be
- 18:21Speaker 1: back either, So it was it was really scary and
- 18:25Speaker 1: it was hard, but I'm so glad I did it
- 18:27Speaker 1: the way I did it.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yeah, the moment you press post or share it, whatever
- 18:32Speaker 2: it is that the button says these days, you press
- 18:34Speaker 2: that button, are you like a hands off kind of
- 18:37Speaker 2: person who're like, Okay, it's done, I need to walk
- 18:38Speaker 2: away for a little bit.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Actually, at that time, I put my phone down because
- 18:42Speaker 1: I was already just like super overwhelmed from like trying
- 18:45Speaker 1: to write the caption and make it the way I
- 18:47Speaker 1: wanted it to be. That I just put my phone down,
- 18:49Speaker 1: But the amount of support I got was insane. It's
- 18:53Speaker 1: still like my best post to date. Like, the comments
- 18:56Speaker 1: were so so kind, and that also was like a
- 19:00Speaker 1: healing point for me of like, hey, these people don't
- 19:02Speaker 1: only just follow you because of you got top five
- 19:06Speaker 1: or whatever, Like, they follow you because they like you,
- 19:09Speaker 1: you know. So that was also a healing moment for
- 19:11Speaker 1: me too, because I felt that people only cared about
- 19:13Speaker 1: me or liked me because of how it plays.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean some numbers, and I'm not sure if
- 19:18Speaker 2: all of these are up to date, but we're talking
- 19:20Speaker 2: a woman that now has at least at least a
- 19:23Speaker 2: two hundred and sixty five pound back squat, a two
- 19:26Speaker 2: hundred and fifteen pound this is wild to make clean
- 19:28Speaker 2: and jerk, a three hundred pound dead left, one hundred
- 19:31Speaker 2: and eighty five pounds snatch, and a two hundred and
- 19:33Speaker 2: thirty pound pound squad.
- 19:35Speaker 3: That's insane.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Thank you, it's insane, and it's such a testament to
- 19:41Speaker 2: the work that you've put in, you know, So to
- 19:44Speaker 2: have this beautiful moment when so many individuals within your
- 19:49Speaker 2: community can look at you and say, hey, we see you,
- 19:52Speaker 2: and you are so much bigger than the numbers that
- 19:54Speaker 2: you put up, it's special.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Like of course they follow you because I think
- 19:59Speaker 1: you're cool and like the work out fast, whatever, but
- 20:01Speaker 1: they also saw something in me, like the way you know,
- 20:05Speaker 1: I compete, or my heart or my personality, like they
- 20:07Speaker 1: saw something bigger than just a number, and like me,
- 20:11Speaker 1: realizing that helped so much, like it still to this day.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Like that's why I try to share more about just
- 20:17Speaker 1: like life because you know, people want to see that too.
- 20:37Speaker 2: But I do want to gain some context also about
- 20:40Speaker 2: what your care team looks like during this time, who.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Were you talking to?
- 20:45Speaker 2: And then when you started to get back into working out,
- 20:47Speaker 2: I'm sure that also came with so many challenges.
- 20:50Speaker 1: So obviously my immediate support was my mom. She was
- 20:54Speaker 1: an angel, Like she held my hand through the whole thing,
- 20:58Speaker 1: every step. It was really scary, but she was there.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And then also the rest of my family around. And
- 21:03Speaker 1: then I had a really I still do have a
- 21:06Speaker 1: really close friend. Her name is Tasia. She is an angel,
- 21:10Speaker 1: and so she was very you know, very dear to
- 21:12Speaker 1: me during that time and helped too. And then also
- 21:16Speaker 1: like on the you know, more therapy side of it,
- 21:19Speaker 1: I had a sports psychologist that I was talking to.
- 21:21Speaker 1: She kind of helped me make the decision too to well,
- 21:24Speaker 1: obviously it was all up to me, but not compete.
- 21:28Speaker 1: But yeah, I had an amazing team and they were
- 21:31Speaker 1: so so kind and honestly, it really shows you like
- 21:33Speaker 1: who your people are when you go through something like
- 21:36Speaker 1: that and decide to like step back like those those
- 21:38Speaker 1: are my ride or dies, and there's so many more
- 21:40Speaker 1: I didn't even name, but yeah, amazing team.
- 21:44Speaker 2: How did you know that you were ready to get
- 21:47Speaker 2: back into it, because I know that you said when
- 21:50Speaker 2: you shared your truth, when you were transparent with what
- 21:53Speaker 2: was going on, you weren't even entirely sure if you'd
- 21:55Speaker 2: ever get back to that point.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yeah. No, Basically from the time that I went home,
- 22:00Speaker 1: so like in the middle of December, for I'm talking months,
- 22:03Speaker 1: I did not step into a crosswit gym. I was like,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I don't want to be there, I don't want to
- 22:07Speaker 1: do it, I don't want to see it. I did
- 22:09Speaker 1: not do any kind of CrossFit for months. I was
- 22:12Speaker 1: going to Planet Fitness with my mom and walking on
- 22:14Speaker 1: the treadmill and doing bodybuilding machines like no crossbit. Like
- 22:18Speaker 1: you know how people say like, oh, I'm taking some
- 22:20Speaker 1: time off al blah blah, but they still work out. No,
- 22:23Speaker 1: that was not me. I was so like done with it.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I didn't want anything to do with it. Nothing. But
- 22:30Speaker 1: then around I guess it was in the summer, I
- 22:33Speaker 1: was like hopped in on the CrossFit workout and it
- 22:36Speaker 1: killed me, but I was like that was kind of fun.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Like maybe I kind of missed that a little bit,
- 22:41Speaker 1: but wasn't like, oh I want to compete. But I
- 22:43Speaker 1: just slowly started like doing stuff like that again. I
- 22:45Speaker 1: was like, I kind of missed this. And then I
- 22:48Speaker 1: think it was September. I was like, you know what,
- 22:51Speaker 1: I think I'm going to try again. I think I
- 22:54Speaker 1: want to try again, and it just I literally woke
- 22:56Speaker 1: up one day and I felt like that, And that's
- 23:00Speaker 1: literally the best way I can describe it, because that's
- 23:02Speaker 1: exactly what happened. I was like, I'm just gonna try
- 23:04Speaker 1: this again, and if it doesn't work, that's okay, or
- 23:06Speaker 1: if I get overwhelmed or you know, go back to
- 23:08Speaker 1: bad habits and I'm not gonna do it. But I
- 23:11Speaker 1: had already put so much work in and like healing
- 23:14Speaker 1: and just having balance and everything in my life that
- 23:17Speaker 1: I was like, if this doesn't work, that's okay.
- 23:19Speaker 2: It's really beautiful to hear that you had this perspective
- 23:23Speaker 2: of if it doesn't work, it's okay, If it doesn't
- 23:27Speaker 2: feel like it used to, it's okay. You were truly
- 23:30Speaker 2: just going with your intuition. For so many there's this
- 23:34Speaker 2: large sense of fear when you return back to something
- 23:37Speaker 2: that maybe at one point or another you had a
- 23:40Speaker 2: negative connotation with. How were you able to set those
- 23:44Speaker 2: fears aside to embrace the modality for what it was.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, the thing I told myself from the beginning
- 23:52Speaker 1: was that I never ever want to feel like how
- 23:55Speaker 1: I felt again, Like I was not willing to sacrifice
- 23:58Speaker 1: anything for that. No amount of trophy placing was ever
- 24:01Speaker 1: worth that to me, because it was just so miserable
- 24:03Speaker 1: for so long, and I didn't want to live my
- 24:05Speaker 1: life like that. So that was the easiest thing for me.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I was like, it feels like that again, I'm out, like,
- 24:09Speaker 1: I don't want to feel like that. But I've found
- 24:12Speaker 1: ways to make it fun, even though it was so humbling,
- 24:15Speaker 1: trying to like get in shape again, so humbling, But
- 24:18Speaker 1: I've found ways, you know, to have balance and not
- 24:21Speaker 1: take it so seriously all the time. And I just
- 24:24Speaker 1: put a lot of work in outside of the gym
- 24:26Speaker 1: that I could obviously see had translated into the gym,
- 24:29Speaker 1: So that was made it so much easier to transition.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Finding the fun is a really good piece of advice,
- 24:34Speaker 2: super applicable both in the situation that you're describing and
- 24:38Speaker 2: also for anyone that's just getting started. Working out can
- 24:41Speaker 2: be really challenging, even if you are an.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Elite CrossFit Games athlete.
- 24:47Speaker 2: For you, what was going through your mind when it
- 24:51Speaker 2: wasn't necessarily as easy as it used to be?
- 24:55Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, it was so humbling. I was like
- 24:57Speaker 1: I did not even have callouses on my hands, Like
- 24:59Speaker 1: my hands were ripping. I was like failing things that
- 25:03Speaker 1: I could do with my eyes closed. But honestly, I
- 25:06Speaker 1: don't regret it at all, because that's exactly what I needed.
- 25:09Speaker 1: If I jumped back in right to the same numbers
- 25:12Speaker 1: and fitness, like, I don't think I would have grown
- 25:13Speaker 1: any but like forcing myself to like basically start from
- 25:17Speaker 1: the beginning again and like rebuild everything mentally and physically,
- 25:21Speaker 1: I think shape the journey perfectly.
- 25:23Speaker 3: This is about fitness.
- 25:24Speaker 2: It's not about fitness, right, It's this opportunity to face
- 25:29Speaker 2: challenge head on and see who you really are. When
- 25:32Speaker 2: things aren't easy, that's when we have the opportunity to learn.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, and that's exactly what happened.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Yeah for sure.
- 25:39Speaker 2: So as you start to get into the weeds again
- 25:43Speaker 2: doing movements that start to feel a little bit more familiar,
- 25:47Speaker 2: do you have a understanding pretty quickly that all right, yeah,
- 25:53Speaker 2: I'm ready to get back to where I was.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. Actually it was in the beginning I
- 26:00Speaker 1: was I don't even know if I want to do this,
- 26:02Speaker 1: because this one felt so hard. I was like, I
- 26:03Speaker 1: have so much work to do, like so much to
- 26:06Speaker 1: get back to where I was, And I wasn't sure
- 26:08Speaker 1: if I ever was gonna be able to get back
- 26:10Speaker 1: to where I was because it felt so far away.
- 26:12Speaker 1: But every week I just kept showing up and something
- 26:15Speaker 1: would get easier. I'd be able to lift more, do
- 26:17Speaker 1: more reps, and every single week just kept getting better.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Kept getting better. Now you talked about going to North Carolina.
- 26:24Speaker 2: I know you've also had sometimes spent in Virginia, and
- 26:28Speaker 2: now you're back in Cookeville. In those other places outside
- 26:32Speaker 2: of Tennessee, you have been so open about the balance
- 26:36Speaker 2: that they brought to your life. How do you bring
- 26:38Speaker 2: that balance with you to Cookeville, knowing that it is
- 26:42Speaker 2: such an intense CrossFit community over at CrossFit Mayhem or
- 26:46Speaker 2: your train.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it made me nervous coming back here when I left,
- 26:51Speaker 1: because I just felt like I associated the environment. Not
- 26:54Speaker 1: that it's bad here, but like I had just had
- 26:56Speaker 1: so many bad days here for myself that I was
- 26:59Speaker 1: scared that it was going to make me feel some
- 27:01Speaker 1: type of way. But when I came back that summer
- 27:04Speaker 1: before the Games, I had honestly felt totally fun. Like
- 27:07Speaker 1: it didn't trigger me. It didn't make me feel any
- 27:09Speaker 1: type of way or did me feel like I have
- 27:10Speaker 1: to overtrain or anything. Like. I just felt so much peace.
- 27:14Speaker 1: So that's how I knew I had like truly healed.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that honesty is really important. Fun fact,
- 27:20Speaker 2: I've been to Cookville, which is oh such a I know,
- 27:23Speaker 2: such a random thing. I once came down to Tennessee
- 27:27Speaker 2: to Mayhem to interview Rich Frowning Okay for an article
- 27:33Speaker 2: for men's Health and spent like thirty six hours with
- 27:35Speaker 2: him and his family at the barn. I thought, oh cool,
- 27:39Speaker 2: all this stuff, and it's such an interesting place because
- 27:42Speaker 2: for those that know nothing about CrossFit, You would have
- 27:45Speaker 2: no idea that there was such an ingrained community around you.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah. No, there's an amazing community here and I'm very lucky.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Yeah, So what do you think that that community then
- 27:57Speaker 2: gives back to you.
- 27:58Speaker 3: You talked about being able to be back.
- 28:00Speaker 2: In that environment and feeling safe, But bigger than that,
- 28:03Speaker 2: why is it beneficial for you to be there?
- 28:06Speaker 3: Specifically for me?
- 28:08Speaker 1: Now, it's not as much as like the athletes that
- 28:12Speaker 1: are here, like they're all super cool and good for me.
- 28:16Speaker 1: It's that I've got a lot of friends here that
- 28:18Speaker 1: I've known me for a long time. So just to
- 28:20Speaker 1: be able to like see them every day and work
- 28:22Speaker 1: out with them every day does so much good for me.
- 28:25Speaker 1: I don't necessarily need anyone, you know, competing with me
- 28:28Speaker 1: every day anymore. I'm ten years into this, But just
- 28:31Speaker 1: having people that I know that support me and love
- 28:34Speaker 1: me no matter what and just show up for me
- 28:36Speaker 1: does way more than an athlete beside me push me everywhere.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So just having like that amazing community here, there's a
- 28:42Speaker 1: lot of cool people.
- 28:44Speaker 2: It's it's cool to hear about and it's so interesting
- 28:46Speaker 2: because you you may get a point to say, I
- 28:49Speaker 2: don't need anyone. And also the community is really beneficial.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Yeah. I when I say the community, I'm like, I
- 28:57Speaker 1: have like just random people that show up for an
- 28:59Speaker 1: hour a day. They show up for me every day.
- 29:01Speaker 1: They come and work with me. They do their one
- 29:03Speaker 1: workout of the day with me. We show up at
- 29:05Speaker 1: four and we grind just grod. So they're not like
- 29:08Speaker 1: elite athletes or anything, but they show up. They still
- 29:11Speaker 1: show up for me every day.
- 29:12Speaker 2: So, now that you're back truly into the swing of things,
- 29:16Speaker 2: how are you feeling about where CrossFit is as a
- 29:20Speaker 2: community and where it's going.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I think the community is in a much better spot
- 29:26Speaker 1: right now than it has been in a long time,
- 29:28Speaker 1: and it's seeing everyone do the open and participate. I
- 29:31Speaker 1: think it's in a really good spot. And I think
- 29:34Speaker 1: we all just need to like stick together and like
- 29:36Speaker 1: get that old CrossFit feeling back. And yeah, I think
- 29:39Speaker 1: a lot of people feel the same.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:41Speaker 2: I know, it's it's been a sticky couple of years
- 29:43Speaker 2: for crossbit and now with the emergence of so many
- 29:46Speaker 2: other things, specifically, I mean so many crossfitters now dabbling
- 29:50Speaker 2: in the high rocks world.
- 29:51Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you see for yourself personally?
- 29:54Speaker 2: When we think about moving forward knowing that all of
- 29:56Speaker 2: that is in the mix.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Personally, I just love CrossFit and I think that will
- 30:02Speaker 1: always put a special place in my heart. But I
- 30:04Speaker 1: also think it's really cool that we have opportunities to
- 30:07Speaker 1: go do other things like high Rocks and you know,
- 30:11Speaker 1: these other fitness comps that are starting, And I think
- 30:14Speaker 1: it's cool that it's not just everything in one basket,
- 30:16Speaker 1: you know, it's you can go run a race this
- 30:18Speaker 1: week in and do a CrossFit comp this weekend and
- 30:20Speaker 1: do this, And I just think that's cool that there's
- 30:22Speaker 1: a lot of opportunities now.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and as an athlete in a sport that may
- 30:28Speaker 2: not be the absolute most mainstream, that opportunity can become
- 30:33Speaker 2: really critical to your livelihood.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you get eyes in all different areas.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Now, you mentioned earlier how you were so happy that
- 30:43Speaker 2: you were vulnerable when it came to sharing your story
- 30:47Speaker 2: and taking that time off. That vulnerability is something that
- 30:49Speaker 2: you still maintain, especially with your audiences over on social
- 30:55Speaker 2: Are there times where it's harder to be open than others.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean at the end of the day, like
- 31:03Speaker 1: everyone struggles and we still have our struggles. I still
- 31:06Speaker 1: have bad days all the time, and sometimes I'm like,
- 31:08Speaker 1: I feel like I have an image to uphold of
- 31:12Speaker 1: you know, being happy and healthy and healed, but like
- 31:15Speaker 1: I still have bad days and some days or sometimes
- 31:17Speaker 1: I'm like, you're supposed to be this role model that's
- 31:19Speaker 1: you know, all these things now, but you know you're
- 31:23Speaker 1: having a bad day and you know you're not saying
- 31:25Speaker 1: or you're not following what you tell other people to do.
- 31:27Speaker 1: So I battle with that a lot. But at the
- 31:30Speaker 1: end of the day, it's like, that's why I try
- 31:31Speaker 1: to share everything that I can, Like, Hey, it's okay
- 31:33Speaker 1: to still have bad days. It's not the end of
- 31:35Speaker 1: the world. It doesn't mean that you're you know, taking
- 31:37Speaker 1: a step backwards or going into your old ways. So
- 31:40Speaker 1: that's why I even when I'm having a bad day,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I try to share it because I think that, you know,
- 31:46Speaker 1: a lot of people think that they're the only ones
- 31:48Speaker 1: in there not.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yeah, what did the last bad day look like for you, Hayley?
- 31:54Speaker 1: It depends. There's different levels. The last one was I
- 31:57Speaker 1: think I was honestly so exacted. I'd definitely trained too much,
- 32:02Speaker 1: had a little overtraining day, and then I just it
- 32:05Speaker 1: just makes me tired, and then I'm snappy and I
- 32:07Speaker 1: feel like everything you know is going wrong or this
- 32:10Speaker 1: or that, and I just get down on myself or
- 32:13Speaker 1: like the way I look or yeah, so just all
- 32:17Speaker 1: that into one and then ends up in a little crash.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Out and then how do you pull yourself out?
- 32:25Speaker 1: It's actually a lot easier to pull myself out now
- 32:27Speaker 1: than it used to be. But I'm just like, hey,
- 32:28Speaker 1: it's not that serious, Like it's okay, you know, like
- 32:32Speaker 1: take take a few minutes, be upset about it, cry
- 32:34Speaker 1: about it whatever, but move on like it's okay. And
- 32:37Speaker 1: I I know that sounds like super easy to do,
- 32:40Speaker 1: but genuinely, I've worked so hard to get to that
- 32:42Speaker 1: place that that's literally what I do.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so challenging and so relatable. Right you are
- 32:50Speaker 2: there other ways that you cope? Is it reaching out
- 32:52Speaker 2: to people? Is it journaling? Is it mindfulness? Like what's
- 32:55Speaker 2: in the toolbox for you?
- 32:57Speaker 1: Ways that I cope would probably be watching Disney movies.
- 33:02Speaker 1: I know that sounds really like not a good coping mechanism,
- 33:05Speaker 1: but and this makes me think about anything else other
- 33:09Speaker 1: than what I'm upset about. It makes me feel, you know,
- 33:12Speaker 1: just warm and fuzzy and happy on the inside, and
- 33:14Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, it's okay, it's not that serious.
- 33:18Speaker 3: It's not that serious. Now.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Pivoting back to talking a bit about your training. Are
- 33:23Speaker 2: we still in the gym twice a day typically?
- 33:25Speaker 1: Yes, So still in gym twice a day, just I'm
- 33:28Speaker 1: a bit more careful with my volume though, and like
- 33:32Speaker 1: try to do things intentionally instead of just working out
- 33:34Speaker 1: to burn calories.
- 33:35Speaker 2: And then how do those training sessions typically differ? Because
- 33:38Speaker 2: someone who may not have a full understanding of CrossFit,
- 33:42Speaker 2: here's that you're in the gym twice a day, and
- 33:45Speaker 2: they think, how is that not overtraining?
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean actually every session is different, Like no
- 33:50Speaker 1: session looks the same. But usually, like my morning sessions
- 33:53Speaker 1: are from like nine to twelve. You know, they come in,
- 33:56Speaker 1: warm up, hit a workout that's like twenty thirty minutes,
- 33:59Speaker 1: and then I'll lift for a while and then I'll
- 34:02Speaker 1: do one more shorter workout. So it sounds like a lot,
- 34:05Speaker 1: but it really isn't. And there's a lot of like
- 34:07Speaker 1: chit chat in there, warm up, cool down, lots of
- 34:10Speaker 1: chit chat. And then in the afternoon it's kind of
- 34:13Speaker 1: like the same thing. Maybe like one less workout, but yeah,
- 34:16Speaker 1: same thing.
- 34:17Speaker 2: It's impossible to hear this and not think about the
- 34:21Speaker 2: fact that you are extremely diligent in what you do.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Would you say that you've always been this way? Is
- 34:28Speaker 2: this something that was modeled for you as a kid
- 34:31Speaker 2: as you were coming up within sport?
- 34:33Speaker 1: I've always been this way. My mom has videos in me,
- 34:36Speaker 1: like during fifth grade to field day, like selling my
- 34:39Speaker 1: soul to like win the fifty meter dash or like
- 34:42Speaker 1: when anything. It's always been in me to try to
- 34:44Speaker 1: be the best. And yeah, it's just something that I
- 34:47Speaker 1: haven't been taught. It was just ingrained in me like
- 34:50Speaker 1: I was born like that, I guess.
- 34:53Speaker 2: And on the days that maybe you're not feeling the
- 34:55Speaker 2: most diligent, on the days that you are feeling a
- 34:58Speaker 2: little bit tired, what helps you show up and keep moving?
- 35:01Speaker 1: Honestly, it's never even been an option to me, Like,
- 35:04Speaker 1: of course I wake up tired. Of course I wake
- 35:06Speaker 1: up not motivated. But it's never even like been an
- 35:10Speaker 1: option in my head to like, oh I don't want
- 35:12Speaker 1: to go, or I don't go, you know, like I
- 35:14Speaker 1: just go, like I know I have to. It's my job.
- 35:17Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, So you're like, yeah, this is just
- 35:20Speaker 2: how it is. But it doesn't mean that those days
- 35:22Speaker 2: don't happen.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Oh, they happen all the time. This morning, I wanted
- 35:25Speaker 1: to keep sleeping, but like, it's just not an option
- 35:27Speaker 1: to me to not go, Like, yeah, I know that
- 35:29Speaker 1: I would beat myself up more if I didn't go.
- 35:32Speaker 2: You know what's so funny is that so many hear
- 35:35Speaker 2: that and they think your job is truly to work out?
- 35:38Speaker 3: What kind of job is that?
- 35:40Speaker 2: When I say that back to you, can you imagine
- 35:43Speaker 2: that this is how you found your way here to
- 35:45Speaker 2: making a living.
- 35:46Speaker 1: No, it's honestly the coolest job ever. I get to
- 35:49Speaker 1: go so many places, I met so many cool people.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I get to do things like this. It's amazing.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah, as you are now in this tenth year, you
- 35:58Speaker 2: said before that you hope that it's a good one.
- 36:01Speaker 2: What would make this year great? Aside from maybe finding
- 36:05Speaker 2: that top spot?
- 36:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been working so so hard in the gym
- 36:11Speaker 1: this offseason, just really trying to you know, not that
- 36:15Speaker 1: it's about placings, but make myself proud even if that
- 36:18Speaker 1: isn't a top spot. So number one, make myself proud
- 36:21Speaker 1: because there's not a worst feeling than not being proud
- 36:25Speaker 1: of yourself and your efforts. And then number two just
- 36:28Speaker 1: continue to you know, leave an impact on people and
- 36:31Speaker 1: inspire people.
- 36:32Speaker 2: And yeah, yeah, when you think about that, that goal
- 36:38Speaker 2: setting that goes beyond a number, is that something that
- 36:41Speaker 2: you're continuously auditing. Is that something that you talk about
- 36:45Speaker 2: a bit with your coach? Where do those goals come
- 36:48Speaker 2: into the mix?
- 36:50Speaker 1: I don't really talk about a number anymore, just because
- 36:52Speaker 1: I feel like that's a slippery slope. But I know
- 36:55Speaker 1: that when I'm very fit and at my fittest and strongest,
- 36:58Speaker 1: that I know what I'm capable of. So it's kind
- 37:01Speaker 1: of like something that we don't really say, but we
- 37:04Speaker 1: know we want to do, you know, but just don't
- 37:07Speaker 1: want to put that pressure on myself. Yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Of course, now as you are, you're saying like kind
- 37:14Speaker 2: of taking a step back not necessarily focusing on a
- 37:16Speaker 2: certain number. That doesn't mean that there can't be a
- 37:19Speaker 2: benefit to having a certain.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Amount of data around you.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Right With that said, how do you focus on listening
- 37:28Speaker 2: to your body when there is so much access to numbers?
- 37:32Speaker 1: I mean, I usually just take it day by day,
- 37:35Speaker 1: but I've been doing this for so long that I
- 37:37Speaker 1: know myself so well, so like I know paces that
- 37:39Speaker 1: should be hitting, I know numbers that I should be hitting,
- 37:42Speaker 1: and I know what that would look like on a leaderboard.
- 37:44Speaker 1: So I just again, I just know myself so well
- 37:47Speaker 1: that I know where I should be.
- 38:05Speaker 2: How do you relax? How do you take time for
- 38:09Speaker 2: you outside of the Disney movies?
- 38:11Speaker 1: I will not look at anything CrossFit outside of the
- 38:15Speaker 1: gym once I leave this gym. Nothing. It's either just
- 38:19Speaker 1: like super girly stuff or Disney or I have lots
- 38:22Speaker 1: of animals, so keep myself busy with animals, literally, anything
- 38:26Speaker 1: but working out or CrossFit.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Tell me about the animals please.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I have two cats, an Australian shepherd puppy, so good.
- 38:36Speaker 1: I have an axel lottle. You know what that is?
- 38:39Speaker 3: No, it's like.
- 38:43Speaker 1: You have to look it up. But they're rightly popular.
- 38:45Speaker 1: I'm surprised you haven't seen it.
- 38:46Speaker 3: No, I've never heard. And then I have four hermit crabs.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. The hermit crabs are kind of like
- 38:51Speaker 3: the biggest wild card here.
- 38:53Speaker 1: No, the ax a lottle, I've promised the axe lottle
- 38:55Speaker 1: is the coolest one.
- 38:57Speaker 3: How did you find yourself with that.
- 38:59Speaker 1: I saw at a coffee shop and I was like,
- 39:01Speaker 1: oh my gosh, I really want one of those, and
- 39:04Speaker 1: then just does some research on it and got one.
- 39:07Speaker 1: But I love keeping myself busy with animals.
- 39:10Speaker 3: That's a lot to handle them.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Yeah, especially when you have to travel and stuff for
- 39:15Speaker 2: your work.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Yeah, thankfully. My mom loves her grandbabies.
- 39:19Speaker 3: There you go. And so how far away are your
- 39:21Speaker 3: parents now?
- 39:23Speaker 1: So I'm from North Carolina and they still live there,
- 39:25Speaker 1: so it's like five and a half hours, so I'm
- 39:27Speaker 1: not too terrible, but just far enough.
- 39:30Speaker 2: What would you say now being back in Cookeville is
- 39:33Speaker 2: the best part of it for you? Knowing that your
- 39:36Speaker 2: family is a you know, considerable amount of way.
- 39:39Speaker 1: For me, I think it's just the community and the
- 39:41Speaker 1: environment that I've been around here, and it just you know,
- 39:46Speaker 1: showing up for this crew every day, like both four
- 39:48Speaker 1: pm crows telling me about like it just brightens my day,
- 39:51Speaker 1: Like I look forward to that. So I've built some
- 39:54Speaker 1: things here over the last few years that have really
- 39:57Speaker 1: just you know, paid the way for me. And yeah,
- 40:01Speaker 1: I don't think my day to day would look the
- 40:04Speaker 1: same without them and my happiness here.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Ten years ago you never anticipated that you'd be doing
- 40:09Speaker 2: what you're doing now. So when you think ten years
- 40:12Speaker 2: into the future, what do you envision for yourself?
- 40:15Speaker 1: Well, I hope that I can keep doing this for
- 40:18Speaker 1: a couple more years or as long as my body
- 40:20Speaker 1: allows me to and to keep you know, being myself
- 40:24Speaker 1: and speaking my truth and honestly, Yeah, just staying true
- 40:28Speaker 1: to myself.
- 40:29Speaker 3: And yeah, yeah, just staying true to myself.
- 40:33Speaker 2: When you I mean, obviously you have an affinity for animals,
- 40:35Speaker 2: do you think about doing something with that when.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, I would love to have like an animal
- 40:39Speaker 1: farm one day, a big piece of land, like and
- 40:44Speaker 1: just have a bunch of animals.
- 40:45Speaker 3: I love that.
- 40:46Speaker 2: The other thing that I think could be really helpful
- 40:49Speaker 2: for us to talk about, you talked about so beautifully
- 40:52Speaker 2: your journey navigating you know, a little bit of disordered
- 40:55Speaker 2: eating and then also overtraining. Now, what would you say
- 40:59Speaker 2: your relationship is like with your body.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's actually super interesting now because I have come
- 41:06Speaker 1: so far. Back in the day, Like when I was
- 41:09Speaker 1: really struggling, I would wear like these super huge T shirts.
- 41:12Speaker 1: And there's nothing wrong with that unless you're doing it
- 41:15Speaker 1: for a reason of Like you think that you look
- 41:18Speaker 1: bad or you know, you're just insecure, Like that's all
- 41:21Speaker 1: I would wear because I truly just believed that I
- 41:23Speaker 1: looked so terrible and had this terrible image in my
- 41:27Speaker 1: head of how I looked and just hated myself. But
- 41:30Speaker 1: whereas now it's like I really love style and I
- 41:33Speaker 1: love wearing cute gym outfits, and you know, sometimes I
- 41:36Speaker 1: still do wear baggy fits because they're super cool, like
- 41:39Speaker 1: you know, style it up and it looks great, but
- 41:41Speaker 1: it comes from a place now of like I think
- 41:42Speaker 1: it looks cool, where it's like I'm not doing it
- 41:44Speaker 1: because I hate myself. So just like in that area,
- 41:48Speaker 1: I've grown so much, and like my relationship with food
- 41:50Speaker 1: is like night and day, like so much better and
- 41:55Speaker 1: it takes a long time, like it does not happen overnight,
- 41:57Speaker 1: and I still have bad days too, but I have
- 42:00Speaker 1: worked so hard and like anyone that knows me with
- 42:03Speaker 1: Josh for this, like I'm a completely different person in
- 42:06Speaker 1: that category.
- 42:07Speaker 3: I think that for me as well.
- 42:10Speaker 2: I was big into CrossFit over a decade ago, and
- 42:14Speaker 2: when I was into CrossFit, I felt like that was
- 42:17Speaker 2: a pretty triggering component of it, just seeing so many
- 42:21Speaker 2: people around you being so diligent with their intake and
- 42:26Speaker 2: really looking at food specifically as fuel. Would you say
- 42:31Speaker 2: that now you're looking at it a little bit less
- 42:34Speaker 2: like fuel and a little bit more like just what
- 42:37Speaker 2: it is.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Like, honestly, yeah, it still can be hard, so
- 42:43Speaker 1: I have to be careful with like, you know, how
- 42:46Speaker 1: I look at food, or you know, even the things
- 42:48Speaker 1: that you look at on social media, you know, can
- 42:50Speaker 1: still be triggering. But yeah, like it's just food at
- 42:53Speaker 1: the end of the day, you know, And it took
- 42:55Speaker 1: me a long time to get to that mindset. It
- 42:58Speaker 1: doesn't mean again, still doesn't mean I don't have issues
- 43:01Speaker 1: or whatever bad days, but it is just food and
- 43:04Speaker 1: it is fuel too. Like I've gotten better about fueling
- 43:07Speaker 1: my workouts, Whereas before I would go so long without
- 43:10Speaker 1: eating because I just wanted to like burn calories. But
- 43:12Speaker 1: now like learning how to fuel workouts and how the
- 43:15Speaker 1: science behind that has been really cool too.
- 43:17Speaker 2: It's helpful, and it's helpful, especially when you see how
- 43:21Speaker 2: it impacts your body and your performance, knowing that there
- 43:24Speaker 2: was this whole category, this whole thing that maybe before
- 43:28Speaker 2: was demonized and now it can be your biggest tool.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Yeah. No, I mean even just like fueling myself. I'm like,
- 43:35Speaker 1: how did I not do that?
- 43:37Speaker 3: For so long?
- 43:38Speaker 1: I'm like, I go like three hours about food and
- 43:40Speaker 1: I'm starving, Like how did I do that?
- 43:43Speaker 2: And I think what's so interesting too, is it's one
- 43:45Speaker 2: of those foundational components that so many overlook, and by
- 43:49Speaker 2: overlooking that, you think like, hey, I was one of
- 43:52Speaker 2: the top ten in the world, and I was hardly
- 43:55Speaker 2: zoning in on this. But if you think about food
- 43:57Speaker 2: as fuel and you think about, hey, maybe I should
- 44:00Speaker 2: prioritize my sleep, it seems so simple, but it can
- 44:03Speaker 2: be the biggest A mock, Yeah.
- 44:05Speaker 1: No, it really is. I mean that's like, you know,
- 44:10Speaker 1: the work inside the gym is like, honestly the easier part,
- 44:13Speaker 1: Like for me, it was the sleep the nutrition, and
- 44:16Speaker 1: I'm still working on that, but it's like once you
- 44:18Speaker 1: get that down it, you know, you feel so much better.
- 44:21Speaker 3: What does recovery look like for you these days? Haley?
- 44:25Speaker 1: Honestly, lots of just laying on the couch and with
- 44:30Speaker 1: my little animals and some stretching. I'm not super great about,
- 44:35Speaker 1: you know, all the recovery stuff, but a lot of
- 44:37Speaker 1: the recovery for me is mental. Like I again, I
- 44:40Speaker 1: don't like talking about watching it. Nothing about crossloit. When
- 44:43Speaker 1: I'm at home, like that helps me feel refresh and
- 44:46Speaker 1: just like ready to go. When it's time to go
- 44:48Speaker 1: to the gym and work, it's time to go. And
- 44:49Speaker 1: then when it's time to turn it off, it's time
- 44:51Speaker 1: to turn it off. So that is the biggest thing
- 44:52Speaker 1: for me.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Yeah, the mental can be such a massive piece. Yes,
- 44:56Speaker 2: that's all for you. What would you say you're inner
- 45:00Speaker 2: dialogue is like these days? And how has your relationship
- 45:03Speaker 2: evolved with your inner dialogue over time?
- 45:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I feel like I'm still my biggest critic,
- 45:10Speaker 1: but I've learned to be a lot nicer to myself
- 45:13Speaker 1: because at the end of the day, like this is
- 45:16Speaker 1: the voice that you're stuck with, like in your head,
- 45:18Speaker 1: you know, so might as well make it nice. But
- 45:23Speaker 1: it's again a lot easier said than done. But I
- 45:25Speaker 1: really really try to make an effort to not be
- 45:27Speaker 1: as negative about myself, because you know, I believe that
- 45:31Speaker 1: those words really do go somewhere when you're constantly saying
- 45:33Speaker 1: it and putting it out in the universe. But yeah,
- 45:36Speaker 1: I just I really make an effort to try to
- 45:38Speaker 1: be nicer in myself and realize that I'm just trying
- 45:40Speaker 1: my best out here too. You know, I'm doing my
- 45:42Speaker 1: best and that's all you can do. It's not worth
- 45:45Speaker 1: beating yourself up over or losing sleep.
- 45:47Speaker 2: So you're about to step out onto a competition floor,
- 45:51Speaker 2: what are the things that you're typically telling yourself?
- 45:55Speaker 1: Well, honestly, I try to keep myself like calm down
- 45:58Speaker 1: and not too up. So I usually I am just like,
- 46:01Speaker 1: you know what to do, like this is just another workout,
- 46:03Speaker 1: Like just go do exactly what you need to go do.
- 46:06Speaker 1: But also number two, I get really like competitive and
- 46:09Speaker 1: comp so I also get a little bit fired up,
- 46:11Speaker 1: like you know, you're going up and you're like, Okay,
- 46:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna take this. And then number three, one thing
- 46:19Speaker 1: that I over the last few years after my year
- 46:21Speaker 1: off was like actually enjoying being out there, like try
- 46:24Speaker 1: to enjoy the whole process because it could be gone tomorrow,
- 46:27Speaker 1: you know. Like once I learned to enjoy competing again,
- 46:30Speaker 1: it was like a whole different experience.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Yeah, there's so much beauty to be had in the journey,
- 46:36Speaker 2: and if you're really basing your success on what happens
- 46:42Speaker 2: at the very end of it, then you're missing the point.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's you miss everything. Like you look back and
- 46:47Speaker 1: it's all just like what just happened, you know, like
- 46:49Speaker 1: you don't even remember.
- 46:50Speaker 3: It entirely, entirely so for you.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Right now, someone comes to your Instagram page, they see
- 46:57Speaker 2: this strong woman that has been a doing CrossFit now
- 47:02Speaker 2: in her tenth season. But when you look in the mirror, Haley,
- 47:05Speaker 2: what is it that you see looking back at you?
- 47:09Speaker 1: I think it goes back to what I said at
- 47:10Speaker 1: the beginning. All I see is a lot of work.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Like I've worked so hard to get where I'm at,
- 47:16Speaker 1: and I've been through a lot of things that I
- 47:19Speaker 1: have shared, some haven't shared. But I just I'm really
- 47:22Speaker 1: proud of myself and I'm proud of who I've become.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I'm proud of the image that I've like upheld. And
- 47:27Speaker 1: then yeah, I'm proud of myself for even just being
- 47:31Speaker 1: an inspiration to someone else. So, yes, the physical stuff
- 47:34Speaker 1: is cool, but there's a lot bigger things than that.
- 47:37Speaker 3: To me, there are bigger things than that.
- 47:39Speaker 2: And on this journey that you're on of working to
- 47:42Speaker 2: be vulnerable with your audience, what would you say is
- 47:46Speaker 2: the most challenging part.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I think the most challenging part would be, honestly, like
- 47:54Speaker 1: just a mental side of it, Like I think everyone
- 47:57Speaker 1: always seems so happy all the time, and you know
- 47:59Speaker 1: this workout win great, or we're posting this highlight blah
- 48:02Speaker 1: blah blah, when it's really not like that at all,
- 48:04Speaker 1: And I think anyone that has social media can relate
- 48:06Speaker 1: to that, like you see this person that's squatting this
- 48:09Speaker 1: amount and you can't do that, or this that blah
- 48:11Speaker 1: blah blah. They look like this, they're wearing this, and
- 48:13Speaker 1: it's just like a never ending comparison battles. So I
- 48:17Speaker 1: would just you know, say, just it is what it is, like,
- 48:21Speaker 1: guess your social media at the end of the day,
- 48:23Speaker 1: like we all have our own stuff going on.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Yeah, the comparison trap can be really yeah, really for
- 48:28Speaker 2: sure to stay out of that.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Now, right now, Haley, before I let you go today,
- 48:34Speaker 2: you have an opportunity to offer yourself a piece of advice.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Let's go back to that Hurtle moment, that rock bottom
- 48:39Speaker 2: moment in twenty twenty two when you really just felt
- 48:43Speaker 2: like you could not do it anymore. Knowing what you
- 48:46Speaker 2: know now, what advice would you offer to your younger self.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Honestly, like in that moment, I would tell myself to
- 48:57Speaker 1: not give up. I'm so glad I didn't give up,
- 48:59Speaker 1: because if I did give up, I wouldn't be where
- 49:02Speaker 1: I'm at right now. I wouldn't have, you know, gotten
- 49:05Speaker 1: all these amazing things. I wouldn't be with Red Bull.
- 49:08Speaker 1: But because I took a chance myself and realized, like,
- 49:11Speaker 1: sure I was at rock bottom, but it can't get worse. Like, sure,
- 49:16Speaker 1: things get hard, but you know, don't give up on yourself.
- 49:21Speaker 1: And I'm so glad I did it.
- 49:23Speaker 2: It's so special because in that moment when you had
- 49:26Speaker 2: to take a step back, there was probably a part
- 49:29Speaker 2: of you that thought you're giving up.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, I'm done. I don't want to
- 49:33Speaker 1: do this anymore. And I'm so glad that something in
- 49:36Speaker 1: me woke up that day and I was like, no,
- 49:38Speaker 1: we're going to do this again, because I would think
- 49:39Speaker 1: I would have regretted it for the rest of my
- 49:41Speaker 1: life if I did it.
- 49:42Speaker 2: By taking that step back, Hayley, you chose yourself, and
- 49:46Speaker 2: that's the most beautiful example.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Yes, and I think so many amazing things came from
- 49:51Speaker 1: that so great.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Well, I'm so glad that we were able to sit
- 49:54Speaker 2: down today. For those that aren't keeping up with you
- 49:57Speaker 2: just yet, give me at your details.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Where do they find you on the socials?
- 50:01Speaker 1: On Instagram, I'm Haley Adams a h L E Y
- 50:04Speaker 1: that's there's fifteen ways to spell it, and then Adams
- 50:07Speaker 1: with four s's. I'm on TikTok.
- 50:12Speaker 3: Mostly just Instagram, mostly just Instagram.
