Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So financial literacy will be taught to years one to
- 0:03Speaker 1: ten in New Zealand from next year. This is income,
- 0:05Speaker 1: it's spending, it's saving, its interest, tax, insurance, you name it.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Money Me CEO Neil Edmund is with me this morning
- 0:12Speaker 1: to discuss Neil, good morning.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Good morning Ryan. How are you very well?
- 0:16Speaker 1: Thank you? What's the level of financial literacy at the moment? Like,
- 0:20Speaker 1: you know, how much do they know about money?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Well? I know some there's various programs available in schools
- 0:27Speaker 2: for quite a while now, but unfortunately it just hasn't
- 0:30Speaker 2: been very clear in the curriculum exactly where personal finance
- 0:34Speaker 2: is to be taught or how and so it's just
- 0:36Speaker 2: really heartening to see that the Ministery of Education is
- 0:39Speaker 2: coming out and saying that they've been getting a lot
- 0:43Speaker 2: clearer about what is to be taught and where. So
- 0:46Speaker 2: I think it's a really good thing.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're doing It's going to be compulsory, there's
- 0:50Speaker 1: going to be resources going to all schools. What do
- 0:54Speaker 1: you think this will do for the kids and for
- 0:58Speaker 1: future generations of kit.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I think it's going to have a massive impact because
- 1:03Speaker 2: financial education and financial literacy is something that every single
- 1:07Speaker 2: person relies on as they go through life, they learn
- 1:11Speaker 2: how to manage their money and make the best use
- 1:14Speaker 2: of it. And up until now it hasn't been really
- 1:18Speaker 2: clearly promoted. I guess would they're better with good word
- 1:23Speaker 2: to use in schools, and so now that it is
- 1:26Speaker 2: going to be going forward, they're just going to be
- 1:29Speaker 2: the position to make a lot better financial decisions. They're
- 1:32Speaker 2: not going to have to do the trial and error
- 1:35Speaker 2: that we all had to do we were growing up
- 1:37Speaker 2: into adults.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You provide resources to seven hundred and fifty schools, What
- 1:41Speaker 1: are the kids, what are they most surprised to learn about,
- 1:44Speaker 1: or what do they like learning about?
- 1:47Speaker 2: I think the feedback that we get from the kids
- 1:50Speaker 2: is they like pretty much all of it because they
- 1:52Speaker 2: realize that it's going to be things that they can
- 1:55Speaker 2: use in their own lives going forward. If they're not
- 1:58Speaker 2: sort of it's not abstract things like economics or difficult
- 2:05Speaker 2: things to get their heads around, like trigonometry. It's actually
- 2:08Speaker 2: real life stuff that they know that they're going to use.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And so we find that the kids are actually genuinely
- 2:14Speaker 2: enthusiastic about learning it, which is great.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Do you who's most keen to learn about it. Do
- 2:19Speaker 1: you find kids who already have money or kids who don't.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I think it's a combination of both. Kids that do
- 2:29Speaker 2: have money, it's really important that they learn what to
- 2:32Speaker 2: do with it so that they can use it effectively,
- 2:35Speaker 2: so that they can they end up being generally being
- 2:39Speaker 2: the economic main economic contributors to driving the economy for it,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and certainly the kids that don't have it, it's important
- 2:46Speaker 2: that they know it because it's a way of helping
- 2:49Speaker 2: them get out of their current situation into a better one.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Neil, appreciate your trying This morning Money me CEO Neil
