- 0:15Every week we're going to take you through how to build an
- 0:17audience of buyers, mastering your marketing message and
- 0:20making offers. Welcome back everybody.
- 0:23I know that so many people around the world want to write a
- 0:27book. It's one of the biggest
- 0:29aspirations many people hold and yet only 2% of people actually
- 0:33do write the book. And when it comes to the world
- 0:35of business, even fewer monetize and make commercial success
- 0:39attracting clients with the book as an asset.
- 0:43And I want you to be the exception to the rule.
- 0:46I want you to be an outlier and an exceptional example who wins
- 0:49clients predictably. And that's why I have invited
- 0:51our next guest into today's show to help you amplify your
- 0:55marketing, but to use the book as a platform to find high
- 0:59paying clients. So please give a very warm
- 1:01welcome. We have Shawna Vanderhook with
- 1:04us today. Welcome to our show.
- 1:05Excited to have you here. Thank you, Christine.
- 1:08It's pleasure. I wanna start with this whole
- 1:11idea because so many people get this idea of like launch the
- 1:15book, but I see a massive issue when it comes to crickets with a
- 1:19thought process that goes what happens next?
- 1:22So how do you see books and how do you see books, particularly
- 1:25as it relates to the business world and what it can do to
- 1:29monetize your message and the work you do?
- 1:32You know what you just said about 5 things I want to respond
- 1:35to and that actually a little nutshell.
- 1:39Yeah. So, so the actual question, let
- 1:41me do that one first and then I'll expand on some of the
- 1:44things you said on the way. So the question is, why do so
- 1:48many people launch a book but not see this as a commercial
- 1:53component and they just hope it's going to work?
- 1:57Yeah. Well, it when people don't see
- 2:02it as a viable product that they have for their business as a way
- 2:07to attract clients, they don't do the marketing up front that's
- 2:11really required most people. In fact, that's one reason I got
- 2:16into book project management was to actually get people to see
- 2:20that there's a whole wide world of things that need to happen.
- 2:26I actually kind of teased when I first started realizing for
- 2:30myself when I did my first couple of books.
- 2:33It's like all it's entailed. And I thought maybe I'd just put
- 2:37out a book called the 697 ways to, you know, steps to finish
- 2:42your book because there's, there's so many details.
- 2:44I'm a detailed person. And so the one thing I think
- 2:49most people miss out on is just making sure they're getting the
- 2:53word out all the way through. But for it to be an asset,
- 2:57people have to know about it. Now, one way is to actually take
- 3:00it, you know, carry your book with you, of course, everywhere
- 3:04you go. And in fact, multiple copies is
- 3:07even better, especially if you're going to a network event
- 3:10or, or anything of that nature where there's going to be
- 3:13multiple people you're talking to.
- 3:15But just even if you're going by yourself out for lunch, you
- 3:19know, take your book and just set it there.
- 3:21So. I think this is such low hanging
- 3:23fruit and it's true. A book is a product at the end
- 3:28of the day, just like your chorus, the program or whatever
- 3:31it is that you are selling as the vehicle to a result that
- 3:35somebody would pay for. And so you do have to think
- 3:38about the marketing and I love that you talk about it's before,
- 3:41it's building the audience, it's after.
- 3:43And I know for sure one of the most common pieces of advice we
- 3:47were given in the in more advanced communities, not
- 3:50necessarily in the right when we first started with why do you
- 3:53not always carry two things, your book and a introduction if
- 3:57you want to be a speaker? Because if you were invited, you
- 4:00should be talking about your book and talking about what you
- 4:02do and you should always take the moment.
- 4:04So I love that you think simple because simple is so effective.
- 4:10Yeah. And and you know, it, it is,
- 4:12it's simply just following the steps.
- 4:14And it's like I said, there's a lot of steps, which is what I
- 4:18help people with, but to get each piece.
- 4:22And you also mentioned something earlier when you were asking the
- 4:24question, you know, about the whole thought process.
- 4:28And one of the things that I am finally admitting to, to the
- 4:33world is that I'm very intuitive.
- 4:35And I have kind of worked a little bit with friends and
- 4:39family and, you know, just asking some insightful
- 4:42questions. But so many people start a book
- 4:45and they never get it finished because they run into blocks.
- 4:49And it's, it's usually something that is like if they can even
- 4:54see with the block is that sometimes just dissipates it
- 4:57they can, they can actually move forward.
- 5:01So that's one of the exciting new things that I'm I'm
- 5:04rebranding and just getting my new website up to, to announce
- 5:08that to the world. Corrections have announced it.
- 5:11You've announced it right here and I celebrate you doing that.
- 5:14It's already infusion, yes. You're welcome.
- 5:18And this is an interesting thing because when you decide to be
- 5:25breaking ground. So I'm going to take an idea.
- 5:28I'm going to bring it to market. How do you use this effectively?
- 5:34Because you're somebody who really helps people work through
- 5:36the process, not just to do the tick the box, but to be
- 5:40effective. And I think effectiveness is the
- 5:42key thing. How do you think effectiveness
- 5:44is built? One step at a time.
- 5:47I'm so. Glad you have that.
- 5:51Not complicated. But yeah, it's, it's a part of
- 5:56its confidence and part of it is just knowing what needs to be
- 6:01done. Um, I think that's that's it in
- 6:06a nutshell. And when you don't know what
- 6:08needs to be done, people, audience, listeners, business
- 6:11owners fears, you hire it. You hire somebody who's actually
- 6:16walked this. And Shauna is someone who we
- 6:18believe is somebody you should work with, which is why we
- 6:20brought her onto this platform. But you've launched it and now
- 6:24how do you use it to attract? Tell us how you really think we
- 6:28can win with a book commercially.
- 6:31Well, one thing, it gives you a whole lot more respectability
- 6:35authority. People, you know, have a
- 6:38different impression of someone who's written a book than just
- 6:41someone who's just kind of, I'm just doing my thing.
- 6:44And so having your book, being an author, that's one level of
- 6:50the respectability. And it's something where if
- 6:53you're talking to someone, there might be a point in your book
- 6:56where it would help them. You know, if you're a health
- 6:59practitioner, there might be a tidbit in there.
- 7:02And it's like, oh, read this chapter because it might really
- 7:05make a difference for you in dealing with your health.
- 7:08Or if it's a, you know, a, a lawn mowing service, you know,
- 7:13landscaping, it's like, Oh yeah, here's some ideas for your home.
- 7:18It it's so it's like it's a way to say I know what I'm talking
- 7:22about because it's in print. It's so important and you're
- 7:27right, and it's because it's a rare group that actually
- 7:29launches a book. And what I love about people who
- 7:31have the courageous act to not just start it, but complete it,
- 7:37launch it and market it is it's usually one of many.
- 7:40And you can talk about your book in almost every place.
- 7:44And that's a bit unique because when you're invited into media
- 7:47circles, whether that's print media, digital media, events,
- 7:50things like that, a lot of people have rules and control
- 7:54over what you can share. But a book is a universally
- 7:57accepted because of the authority factor it brings.
- 8:02And so when you're working with your clients, how do you first
- 8:06start them? We start with finding out why do
- 8:10you want to write a book? Now for everyone, it could be a
- 8:13little bit different. So for some people it could be,
- 8:17I've always wanted to write a book, but they really don't have
- 8:20anything else going on. So we dive deeper.
- 8:24For some people, they go, well, I want to promote my business
- 8:27and we go into, OK, why is it that you want to do that?
- 8:31What do you expect to get out of the book?
- 8:34What do you want your audience to get out of the book?
- 8:37So we go into a a lot, a large number of questions.
- 8:42In fact, I'm actually doing a writers journal right now and I
- 8:47expect to have that out probably in April.
- 8:50But it will be have a lot of these questions queued up.
- 8:54So, you know, if you're not ready to hire me, you can always
- 8:57go just get the journal and start answering the questions.
- 9:01It's important that you do start at the beginning and what the
- 9:04beginning actually is. Everybody is the result you
- 9:07want. We always say start with the end
- 9:09in mind. That is actually the beginning
- 9:12and it is a journey once you start something.
- 9:17I always believe in the compound effect.
- 9:19One conversation, one domino, one question leads to one
- 9:22insight. It just keeps a snowball effect.
- 9:26You've positioned yourself as an expert when you become an
- 9:29author. And we always joke you need to
- 9:32sell one book to be a published author that has sales.
- 9:37You might not be yet the New York best time seller.
- 9:40That might not be your end goal to start with.
- 9:43But how do you actually use this to attract a paying client?
- 9:47So we've got exposure. How do we transition interest
- 9:52into clients? Now that's the the sales
- 9:57question the the other year, right?
- 10:00For. Many, well, you we've talked
- 10:01about the first step is just getting them acquainted with the
- 10:04fact that you are an authority. You have the information that is
- 10:08going to help them with whatever their their need is.
- 10:12So that's Step 1. And I honestly think your your
- 10:17question belongs to a a salesperson.
- 10:22I can help with that guys. Doctor Christine.
- 10:29So where do you leave in 2 next? So if it's not directly into the
- 10:32sales, what what kind of take us on the journey?
- 10:35Well, it's, it's actually the journey is from the start,
- 10:39starting with why you want the book, but then the next step is
- 10:43to actually, OK, what do you want to put in the book to get
- 10:46the result you want? So we do a very deep client
- 10:50research. It's, it's a software that I use
- 10:54that digs in. You identify a few books that
- 10:57would be competing with you, if you will, or that are on a like
- 11:02topic. And we do a deep dive.
- 11:05It's usually a 10 to 15 page report that we end up giving you
- 11:09and it tells you what your, what your readers are looking for in
- 11:15a book. It tells you what they hated
- 11:17about the other books. It tells you what they loved
- 11:20about the other books. It's got all their reactions
- 11:24and, and it helps you when you see how they've responded to
- 11:28other books. It helps you kind of frame up.
- 11:31Well, I need to give them more information on this because they
- 11:35felt that was always lacking. So it's a, it's a way to make
- 11:39sure you are putting into your book what needs to be in your
- 11:42book. And then we go into a very deep
- 11:45blueprint. So an outline, if you will, that
- 11:49tells you piece by piece. So you know, when you're
- 11:53writing, sometimes you're inspired to write something
- 11:56that's not necessarily chronological in your book, but
- 12:00you know that you you plug that spot and you can get on with
- 12:03writing the other spots. I think this is brilliant for a
- 12:06couple of reasons. The first thing is research of
- 12:10existing books shows you that there's a demand and an interest
- 12:14as long as you see that there has been a sale.
- 12:16So if you've seen a book review, there's good indications
- 12:18somebody read the book to give their review.
- 12:20And I always say, don't be frightened by competitor
- 12:23activity. It shows you there's demand in
- 12:26the marketplace and appetite to learn, to grow, to create that
- 12:29result, which somebody sought to serve in the book they
- 12:33published. And I love that you also suggest
- 12:35filling the gap because it's how you can be distinct.
- 12:38It's how you can be bringing a unique opinion and how your
- 12:42people will be served. And that's how you win and build
- 12:46momentum to tell me more beyond the book, how do you actually
- 12:51support me? And I love that you provide such
- 12:54a comprehensive report. This is really gold before you
- 12:58set off on the journey to launch a book.
- 13:01So congratulations, I think that's brilliant.
- 13:04What do you do after you have all the research?
- 13:07What's the big win comes next? Once you once you've done that
- 13:13research, you might be doing other research as you're
- 13:16fleshing out parts of your chapter, like to find other
- 13:19stories that you know beyond what you've experienced in your
- 13:23own business. You can say people that have
- 13:26done this get this result. And so there's more research to
- 13:31be done after that. But that's that's what the
- 13:34launch is at the starting of your book, you know, the birth
- 13:38and then there's that nine months.
- 13:41Like everything has a gestation. Yeah.
- 13:44Yeah, that guys, it doesn't go instantaneous.
- 13:47In the period where writing the draft, now that this is
- 13:51something that it's so hard for people to do, is just dump out
- 13:55everything, dump out your thoughts, write the first draft
- 13:58because we want to make it right the first time.
- 14:01It's like, oh, let me correct that spelling or I could word
- 14:04that differently. Just get it out there.
- 14:07Just get it on to paper or you know, or what do you call it,
- 14:12the virtual paper? Some kind or dictated if it's
- 14:16easier. And it's once you get it all out
- 14:19there, then you come back because I, I know I was working
- 14:23on a book once and it was, I got to a point where I couldn't even
- 14:26see it. It's like it was just, it just
- 14:29felt messy. I knew everything was there, but
- 14:31it just felt messy. And I think one of the most
- 14:35valuable resources is a developmental editor.
- 14:38And I hired A developmental editor and she said, Oh yeah,
- 14:42just move this section here and do this and tweak this.
- 14:44And you need more information here.
- 14:46And you're going on too long over there.
- 14:49It just, it helps so much. It was like just, you know,
- 14:52everything just tumbled into place.
- 14:55This. Is me you cannot see the forest
- 14:57for your own tree and I love the advice you're giving having been
- 15:02a best selling author myself and two book projects on the
- 15:05horizon. It is about schedule the time,
- 15:08simply right, simply show up, simply think about the elements
- 15:14when the brain fires. And that's an intuitive piece
- 15:16that you, you say, you lean into, you say, I'm going to fire
- 15:19on that idea today. And then have somebody who's at
- 15:2150,000 feet find the pattern. Because you always have a
- 15:25pattern and you cannot always see it.
- 15:28But it does really help people connect the dots.
- 15:30And in the same way that this developmental book better
- 15:33brought that clarity to you. That's why you bring in a
- 15:36project manager who knows the dots or you bring in a
- 15:38strategist like myself who said, I understand how we connect this
- 15:41to create commercial success, the marketing and sales in the
- 15:43systems, but you cannot see it for yourself.
- 15:45So do not not start because you cannot yet see what you don't
- 15:50know. And so I think this is a really
- 15:53great recommendation because it will it'll wow you when you see
- 15:58somebody come back and say, here's how it actually all comes
- 16:01together and you're like, yes, yes, that's awesome.
- 16:05Like I'm awesome. This is going to be fun.
- 16:07I can't wait to sell share the world my book as it gets towards
- 16:10the marketplace. I want to also ask you, you
- 16:13know, is, is is we lead into a question around, you know, how
- 16:17do you find clients? Because we're talking about
- 16:19books to find clients and you use a whole book strategy to
- 16:22support your business. When you look at your successful
- 16:26clients and those that have launched and created the
- 16:29momentum they sought for you, what pattern did you see?
- 16:35Well, I think this is one of the reasons I'm bringing out the, my
- 16:38intuitive side because I was, I was really holding back on that
- 16:42before and, and now I'm willing to share it.
- 16:46But one of the struggles when I saw with my clients is they
- 16:51would go chasing rabbits is what they call it.
- 16:54And so getting them back on track without bringing in this
- 17:00intuitive part and asking them those insightful questions, you
- 17:03know, I, I was trying to not get too personal and I'm getting
- 17:08personal now. I celebrate this because your
- 17:11book is a very personal representation and you will be
- 17:14hired and read for your opinion. So, so I'm working with them
- 17:18more in that capacity now and I'm starting to see shifts.
- 17:22It's they're they're more lining up to actually finish the book
- 17:27and get it out there. One gal actually had took an
- 17:31excerpt from her book. And that's the nice thing with
- 17:35books. You can repurpose them in so
- 17:37many ways. But she took just an excerpt and
- 17:41created a little just for she did it actually for one of her
- 17:45clients who really needed the information.
- 17:47So she just pulled it out. She published it as a little
- 17:51mini book pants with not even a mini book, real small thing.
- 17:56But she, she went ahead and did that and, and the person
- 18:01realized, yeah, you, you really know what you're doing here.
- 18:04And just from that, she started working with her.
- 18:07That's right, you create the first win and we often
- 18:10underestimate that. It has to be war and peace in 12
- 18:14billion chapters. Sometimes what you need is that
- 18:16golden nugget. And I love that you say you can
- 18:18repurpose this in a lot of ways because that is actually how you
- 18:21do create multiple different ways to create revenue with your
- 18:24book. And there is strategy around
- 18:26this. So let me ask you, how do you
- 18:28right now amplify your business? How do you find clients most
- 18:31effectively? What's working for you right now
- 18:33in the current economy? Since I'm not really a social
- 18:38media person, I'm actually I'm working on that.
- 18:41I'm going to be getting it. Don't.
- 18:42Have to be, but you don't have to love social.
- 18:46Yeah, I'm I'm just going to do LinkedIn.
- 18:48I'm not going to try the other ones, but and maybe some
- 18:51YouTube. But how I do it right now is is
- 18:55personal references. And I'm actually, I do get
- 18:58people referred to me and I also let it be known when I go to
- 19:03different networking events. There's there's a few great ones
- 19:08here and then there's the virtual networking events, which
- 19:12I'm finding to be I may I'm meeting some amazing people and
- 19:16getting awesome responses. So in fact, I'll even give them
- 19:21a shout out the women network. Yes, I'm I've been spoken at We
- 19:25Women several times. I've got several friends that
- 19:27run chapters. It's a great community for
- 19:28female entrepreneurs. It's a real mix of help,
- 19:31support, tools and camaraderie which we all need.
- 19:34And it's it's actually I just started a month ago and already
- 19:39I'm seeing results. Love it.
- 19:41I love it. Congratulations.
- 19:43So how do people find you, learn about your services and connect
- 19:46you? OK, I ask shana.com.
