Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher is here for football at four, as he
- 0:02Speaker 1: joined us now in the Sports Past Live on ninety's.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Seven three ESPN.
- 0:06Speaker 1: You know you love list season, Jeff, I tend to
- 0:10Speaker 1: just not care at all. But it's the fact that
- 0:13Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts is seventeen has people up in arms, like executive,
- 0:16Speaker 1: this is what people around the league think of him,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and to be I feel like it's about right. Like
- 0:21Speaker 1: some weeks he's seventeen, somebody's five some, he's eleven, some,
- 0:25Speaker 1: he's six some, he's twenty, somebody's twenty five. Like it's
- 0:29Speaker 1: now we kind of know that Jalen Hurts kind of
- 0:32Speaker 1: is what he is, correct.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Mike, I think I think there's two two reasons or
- 0:38Speaker 3: two ways to have a discussion. One, yes, the reality
- 0:41Speaker 3: is he is what he is, right, He's not viewed nationally.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I mean, it can't just be like everybody in Philadelphia
- 0:48Speaker 3: who loves Jalen Hurts is right, and then everybody in
- 0:51Speaker 3: the world is else is wrong?
- 0:52Speaker 4: Right, I mean, he's clearly in a tier that is
- 0:55Speaker 4: below the elite.
- 0:57Speaker 3: But then the second thing is, let's have the discus this.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Do you remember what he was ranked last year in
- 1:02Speaker 3: the same pole. He was number nine, correct, So now
- 1:04Speaker 3: he's seventeen, So that would tell you that. But like
- 1:09Speaker 3: if you were to do you think he is any
- 1:11Speaker 3: lesser or better of a quarterback this past year after
- 1:15Speaker 3: the year before?
- 1:16Speaker 4: Or was he basically the same guy to you?
- 1:18Speaker 2: I mean I feel like he was. No, he wasn't better.
- 1:23Speaker 2: If he was.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I'm not talking about results though, I'm just talking about
- 1:25Speaker 3: like watching him play football. Was he any different to you?
- 1:29Speaker 3: Better or worse than any other years? Like the year
- 1:32Speaker 3: before that?
- 1:35Speaker 1: I would say that last year, huh, it was probably
- 1:41Speaker 1: a better year than it was in twenty twenty four.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Okay, so he played better dropped eight spots.
- 1:49Speaker 3: That just shows what you're getting at is outside of
- 1:53Speaker 3: the upper crowd, outside of maybe four or five guys,
- 1:56Speaker 3: there is a ton of variants correct, and a week
- 1:59Speaker 3: to week basis.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I agree with you that this.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Position and not just this position, a lot of positions.
- 2:04Speaker 3: It just happens to be this one comes under screwtiny.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It's like a baseball pitcher. Yeah, well, are there's your
- 2:09Speaker 3: top two percent, like your Zach Wheelers and your Sanchez
- 2:12Speaker 3: is But then you get guys like even Lozardo or
- 2:15Speaker 3: you know, anybody else's number two or three.
- 2:16Speaker 4: And sometimes they look like Sion's and sometimes they don't.
- 2:19Speaker 4: They look like four. Right, he is an.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Ultimate like Lamar Jackson's number five. Okay, Uh, if you
- 2:25Speaker 1: told me I can have Lamar Jackson for the whole season,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'd say sure. If you told me I get one
- 2:30Speaker 1: guy for one game, I'm taking Hurts over Jackson, right, and.
- 2:36Speaker 4: One game, I'm okay.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I mean, I'd still think Lamar Jackson in any scenario
- 2:42Speaker 3: that you're you're offering, you.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Think Lamar Jackson Is that significantly better than Hurts?
- 2:46Speaker 2: Is that what you're saying?
- 2:48Speaker 4: Yes, I do.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I think he is far more consistent of a passer
- 2:52Speaker 3: when healthy. He has not obviously been healthy last year,
- 2:55Speaker 3: But when he is throwing the football, his arm strength
- 2:58Speaker 3: is unbelievable, maybe the best in the league. His ability
- 3:01Speaker 3: to throw between the numbers since his tight ends as
- 3:04Speaker 3: an area he excels out.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I agree with everything you're saying, by the way, except
- 3:07Speaker 1: for in the biggest game he seems to struggle.
- 3:11Speaker 4: He has, and that's always gonna be the whole conversation.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I'm trying to keep it to just like that.
- 3:17Speaker 1: That's why I have I'm okay with Hurtz being ranked
- 3:20Speaker 1: in the middle because sometimes in Week fourteen he's just okay,
- 3:25Speaker 1: But in Week twenty two, that's when he has his
- 3:29Speaker 1: best game of the year, right, right.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I mean he's also had playoff games where he hasn't
- 3:33Speaker 3: been that great, like the first game, the game against
- 3:35Speaker 3: the Packers and the Super Bowl lag was not a
- 3:38Speaker 3: great game, but then and then the second half against
- 3:40Speaker 3: the Rams wasn't and every day was amazing in this
- 3:43Speaker 3: Denis championship in the Super Bowl. So right, like what
- 3:46Speaker 3: Mark Jackson, once you get outside the five, there is
- 3:49Speaker 3: so much of a variance that it's silly, right, And.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Mark Jackson, by the way, is five. Dak Prescott is
- 3:55Speaker 1: number six. Now, Dak is another one of these guys.
- 3:59Speaker 1: During the reg season, he puts up the numbers week
- 4:02Speaker 1: in and week out, He's throwing for three point fifty
- 4:04Speaker 1: and leading this team to wild forty eight forty seven wins. Right,
- 4:09Speaker 1: But in the playoffs those games seemingly aren't as regular.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Well, And also the part of the discussion I was
- 4:17Speaker 3: going to add is that we maybe just I know,
- 4:21Speaker 3: there's a tendency on the other side, right for people
- 4:24Speaker 3: to say well, these are NFL personnel, coaches, scouts, executives,
- 4:28Speaker 3: and they're saying this, why can't the diehard Eagle fan.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Like put some objectivity into it?
- 4:34Speaker 3: And that's fair, But also, quarterback is a position that
- 4:38Speaker 3: this league has not figured out. They haven't figured out
- 4:40Speaker 3: how to draft it with great accuracy, right, they haven't
- 4:43Speaker 3: figured out how to develop it.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I mean, there's a reason why there's only four.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Guys out of thirty two that we constantly talk about
- 4:49Speaker 3: because these same NFL coaches executive scouts who make these
- 4:54Speaker 3: rankings are flawed as well and don't always see the
- 4:58Speaker 3: bigger picture, and they're very biased toward first round pedigrees.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Clearly on that top ten list, I think eight or
- 5:05Speaker 3: nine were first round picks. Dack's the only one that
- 5:07Speaker 3: probably wasn't right. And they're very biased toward measurables. You
- 5:12Speaker 3: got to be six four, six'. Five SO i Know
- 5:15Speaker 3: i've heard the argument people, say if you really want
- 5:18Speaker 3: to know the truth About Jillen, hurts just have a
- 5:21Speaker 3: draft of quarterbacks in THE nfl and you'll see That
- 5:23Speaker 3: hurts would not be taken in the top. Ten AND
- 5:25Speaker 3: i believe, That, YEAH i believe he would. Be, well
- 5:27Speaker 3: that doesn't mean they're. RIGHT i agree with.
- 5:30Speaker 2: That Like prescott to, ME i MEAN i think that.
- 5:34Speaker 1: He, produces except for in the main, category which is
- 5:38Speaker 1: wins and.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Losses, Right why Would why Would Sam? Donald here's another great.
- 5:43Speaker 3: One why Would Sam? Donald who's two really good years
- 5:46Speaker 3: in a row, now who fits the profile of being
- 5:49Speaker 3: a first round pick and having that bias of that
- 5:52Speaker 3: and the right.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Size, well he was the second pick of the draft
- 5:54Speaker 2: or third.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Right, right so he fits.
- 5:56Speaker 3: THAT a, scout a gentleman would want, to you, know
- 6:00Speaker 3: push those guys towards the. Top why has he Beneath
- 6:02Speaker 3: Caleb williams when he's won A Super? Bowl, Ring he's
- 6:04Speaker 3: had two really good. Years Caleb williams completed fifty eight
- 6:08Speaker 3: percent of his passes last.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Year And williams is another one That i'm kind of iffy.
- 6:12Speaker 1: On i'm not the Biggest williams guy in the, world
- 6:16Speaker 1: but he, certainly you, know Can he's got the arm,
- 6:18Speaker 1: strength he's got the. Talent he just doesn't always put it.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Together herbert's another one That i'm a little iffy, On
- 6:24Speaker 1: LIKE i feel like that he is so overvalued by.
- 6:28Speaker 1: People SOMETIMES i would agree with You i've never really
- 6:31Speaker 1: been the Biggest Justin herbert, guy and he is consistently
- 6:35Speaker 1: six seven, Eight and if you want to take my variance,
- 6:38Speaker 1: point he is the poster.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Child there are games Where Justin herbert looks like he
- 6:43Speaker 3: Is Josh, Allen Patrick, mahomes And Matthew stafford all in.
- 6:47Speaker 3: One and there are games where he looks like he
- 6:50Speaker 3: Is Tony banks And Ryan fitzpatrick And Nick foles all in.
- 6:55Speaker 4: One you, know the poster child for voaladall quarterback right,
- 6:57Speaker 4: right right, Right and SO i can't fit figure it?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Out all? Right what do you make Of drake may number?
- 7:03Speaker 3: EIGHT i make of it that he fits the profile
- 7:07Speaker 3: of a first round, pick great, measurables great athletic, traits who.
- 7:11Speaker 4: As soon as he had great success a year of,
- 7:14Speaker 4: success THE nfl couldn't wait to elevate him into the top.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Five and it.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Doesn't mean he's not it just but it means that
- 7:22Speaker 3: very at this time next year we could have a
- 7:25Speaker 3: discussion about him being ranked eighth or, unranked which again
- 7:29Speaker 3: goes to the variant point of everybody outside of.
- 7:32Speaker 4: That, Mahomes, Allen, BURROW i Put.
- 7:35Speaker 3: STAFFORD i Think stafford's in there With jackson, Too BUT
- 7:38Speaker 3: i will Say stafford doesn't play as well when the environment.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Around him isn't.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Great BUT i would say that other quarterbacks Like mahomes
- 7:48Speaker 3: And lamar can overcome.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Those variance is, better but only by a little. BIT i,
- 7:52Speaker 4: Mean stafford's really really.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Good number nine Is Jared. Goff and you know AN
- 7:56Speaker 1: Nfl cordner, says the guy. Wins it sounds Like.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Hurts, YEAH i mean.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Do you like do you like GoF better Than?
- 8:09Speaker 3: HURTS i hate to be evasive with this, answer but
- 8:14Speaker 3: in most offenses That I'm i'm gonna, run, probably you, know.
- 8:19Speaker 4: If some of it will depend on my old. Line
- 8:21Speaker 4: IF i have a.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Bad old line mediocre, weapons THEN i probably Want hurts
- 8:26Speaker 3: to bail me out of some bad. Plays but IF
- 8:28Speaker 3: i got a good set of weapons and AND i
- 8:30Speaker 3: play indoors AND i have a good old.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Line, Yeah i'm Taking Jared. Goff he's he shouldn't be a.
- 8:35Speaker 3: JOKE i mean he's started getting into like What Matthew
- 8:37Speaker 3: stafford was Before stafford went and won the.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Chip everybody's, like, oh he doesn't win the big. One
- 8:43Speaker 4: he's not that. Good he's, no he's a he's a good.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Quarterback he's not, great he's not, perfect but he's.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Good. Right.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Uh number ten Was Caleb, williams and ONE gm said
- 8:51Speaker 1: he's the most dynamic of the. Group he got the, arm,
- 8:54Speaker 1: talent the overall athleticism suited for today's. Game and it
- 8:57Speaker 1: kind of goes to show you that's what they're looking,
- 9:00Speaker 1: for is the arm town the, athleticism and that's something
- 9:05Speaker 1: THAT i Think hurts has always kind of.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Lacked.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Correct he has an arm that can make any throw
- 9:12Speaker 3: The eagles need at any.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Moment he does not have an arm Like lamar Or.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Josh allen where if you're hitting him and he's falling,
- 9:21Speaker 3: sideways he can still fling it like fifty yards down.
- 9:24Speaker 4: The field in between. TWO i, mean those guys are just.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Otherworldly And burrow doesn't have a great arm, either by the,
- 9:29Speaker 4: way but he's got more of the.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Measurables The national, championship the great stat the five thousand
- 9:35Speaker 3: yard passing, season that he's been to The Super bowl
- 9:37Speaker 3: and all that. Too and you could, say, hey But
- 9:39Speaker 3: ertz has been in one, too but, Again burrow was
- 9:42Speaker 3: a first round.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Pick, well the quote that they use from AN afc
- 9:45Speaker 1: offensive coach kind of tells you the story that hurts
- 9:48Speaker 1: has always kind of. Heard he, says it's been up and,
- 9:49Speaker 1: down But i'm still betting on the Super bowl, credentials the,
- 9:52Speaker 1: intangibles and the. Toughness and that's translation, like he doesn't have,
- 9:58Speaker 1: this he doesn't have, that he doesn't do, that but
- 10:00Speaker 1: he doesn't do, this but for some reason he.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Wins, yes the translation is quote overachiever and. Compensator that
- 10:06Speaker 3: is exactly what that coach is. Saying and that's again
- 10:10Speaker 3: not something that it doesn't mean he's, right doesn't be,
- 10:13Speaker 3: wrong but.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Those are about think about, this.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Moshure he went To, Alabama, okay he ends up going To,
- 10:21Speaker 1: oklahoma two of the best programs in the.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Country.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yep he then comes and wins a Super bowl and
- 10:27Speaker 1: gets to A Super, bowl and we're labeling him as an, overachiever.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Right because nobody expected him to be able to do.
- 10:34Speaker 4: THAT i think that's the perfect example of it over.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Achiever, well my point is that he is at the
- 10:39Speaker 1: top collegiate programs in the. Country you, know it's all
- 10:43Speaker 1: like he came from Like cincinnati OR. Byu he's playing
- 10:47Speaker 1: At alabama In. Oklahoma yet we, still for whatever, reason
- 10:51Speaker 1: viewed this guy as an.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Overachiever, yeah, no that's a fair. Point like someone Like
- 10:57Speaker 4: Tony romo is much more to.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Everybody he was like a third quarterback with The Eastern michigan, Right,
- 11:02Speaker 3: like that's the definition of an overachiever more than a
- 11:04Speaker 3: guy who played At Alabama.
- 11:05Speaker 4: OKLAHOMA i.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Agree but to that, Point, mike there have been plenty
- 11:09Speaker 3: of quarterbacks who played in THE sec for top level
- 11:12Speaker 3: programs Like alabama And oklahoma who were not first round.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Pick so that doesn't automatically make you a high PROFILE
- 11:19Speaker 3: nfl player because you were a quarterback At Oklahoma.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Alabama, No and you, know to ask Like Spencer ratler
- 11:25Speaker 4: where he went To?
- 11:26Speaker 2: Oklahoma, right, yeah then he transferred To South.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Carolina yeah, yeah, yeah that's, right, right all, Right.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Jeff boscher football at. Four we'll get to your mailbag
- 11:36Speaker 1: questions On wednesday's. Edition so if you've got mailbag, questions
- 11:40Speaker 1: keep them coming At Mike yill's, show email them or
- 11:43Speaker 1: hit me on the. Textboard moses back On. Wednesday but
- 11:46Speaker 1: Obviously Jalen. Hurts, oh he seems to be sliding down
- 11:50Speaker 1: this list more and more every single. Year he starts
- 11:53Speaker 1: at you, know he's at nine, now he's at. Seventeen
- 11:56Speaker 1: maybe he uses as fuel and answers everybody back, Says
- 12:00Speaker 1: i'm the seventeenth best guy in the.
- 12:02Speaker 2: League that's.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Awesome, YEAH i, MEAN i Don't he won The Super,
- 12:06Speaker 3: bowl Won Super BOWL mvp was his Second Super bowl
- 12:09Speaker 3: trip in three, years and he finished eighth after that.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Year so, again LIKE i you're, right unless he wins another, one.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Maybe but it's it's always going to be the bias
- 12:19Speaker 3: against the guy who wasn't you, know six', three, two
- 12:21Speaker 3: fifth top five, all that and and. THE variants I
- 12:24Speaker 3: can't i can't say. This enough there's just so much
- 12:27Speaker 3: variance at that position that it leads to variants in
- 12:30Speaker 3: the rankings all, the time which was why you can't
- 12:32Speaker 3: take them.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Too Seriously Jeff mooscher football four From the Inside the,
