- 0:09Speaker 4: Jeff Legwall he's the balloon popper. He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 2: IBBW Local sixty eight. Start with the job and with
- 0:19Speaker 2: the career. It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Five.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Yeah, let's jump right into it. Jeff Legwald is with
- 0:36Speaker 1: us here on a Monday afternoon. Jeff Legwald's Apparents, brought
- 0:40Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers ib
- 0:43Speaker 1: W Local sixty eight. Start with a job and with
- 0:46Speaker 1: a career. Uh, Leggie, let's start on Patrick Sertan. We
- 0:52Speaker 1: give it like pretty much a zero percent chance that
- 0:55Speaker 1: he plays Thursday in New Orleans. Correct.
- 0:58Speaker 5: Uh yeah, I mean even at you know, we still
- 1:01Speaker 5: don't know the severity of the concussion, but even at
- 1:04Speaker 5: the most optimistic quickest movement through the protocol, it would
- 1:12Speaker 5: be virtually impossible for him to clear all the hurdles
- 1:15Speaker 5: before Thursday.
- 1:16Speaker 3: And I you know, there's there's.
- 1:17Speaker 5: No formal, you know, rule that I know of, but
- 1:21Speaker 5: I think if a team ever did that, it would
- 1:25Speaker 5: be thoroughly investigated by the league at some point if
- 1:28Speaker 5: you you somehow turn the guy around to play after
- 1:32Speaker 5: he left the game, Yeah, to play on the Thursday night.
- 1:36Speaker 3: So uh, it will bear watching.
- 1:39Speaker 5: I mean they're only going to practice and it'll be
- 1:41Speaker 5: a walkthrough tomorrow, so we really don't have a good
- 1:47Speaker 5: way to assess of where he is and and how
- 1:50Speaker 5: he's doing yet. So I think that'll be next week
- 1:53Speaker 5: before we have a feel for if this is going
- 1:55Speaker 5: to be a multi week thing or not.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Brutal, brutal luck for the Broncos. I mean, going to
- 2:00Speaker 1: lose it for two games and it's the best player
- 2:02Speaker 1: on your team. I mean, he's the straw that stirs
- 2:04Speaker 1: the drink. Defensively, yesterday, the Broncos state very man heavy,
- 2:09Speaker 1: even after Cirtan was out. Clearly that was Vj's game
- 2:13Speaker 1: plan and what he wanted to do against the Chargers.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It's just when you take the best man coverage corner
- 2:17Speaker 1: in the league off the field, it certainly makes an impact.
- 2:21Speaker 1: As you watched it, and I'm sure you've taken a
- 2:23Speaker 1: look at the film, LEGI, what did you see as
- 2:26Speaker 1: the greatest impact of not having Certan out there?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Well, I think it just took.
- 2:31Speaker 5: It took almost the whole first half for the the
- 2:34Speaker 5: guys who were in the secondary, you know, And a
- 2:37Speaker 5: lot of this is because Jakwon McMillan suddenly has to
- 2:40Speaker 5: play two very different playing the nickel and playing the
- 2:44Speaker 5: outside corner. You know, they're both called corners, but it's
- 2:48Speaker 5: not the same job, and there are a lot of
- 2:50Speaker 5: different responsibilities in terms of play calls and all of
- 2:54Speaker 5: those things. And the nickel guy is usually the verbal
- 2:58Speaker 5: Q guy. He's got to get everybody squared away before
- 3:02Speaker 5: the snap. And so they had McMillan playing outside in
- 3:06Speaker 5: the in the base defense, and then he was pumping
- 3:09Speaker 5: down to the nickel, and that's a lot to ask
- 3:13Speaker 5: of him. And you know, he was limping pretty good
- 3:16Speaker 5: after the game, and you know, I think they have
- 3:19Speaker 5: listed him as as had they practiced today, he would
- 3:23Speaker 5: have been limited with an ankle injury. And that doesn't
- 3:26Speaker 5: shock me. I saw him in the locker room after
- 3:28Speaker 5: the game. But I think the second half they settled down.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Now that the Chargers were not throwing it nearly as
- 3:35Speaker 5: much in the second half with the big lead, but
- 3:38Speaker 5: they were far more sort of in tune with how
- 3:42Speaker 5: it was going to work with Levi Wallace, McMillan and
- 3:47Speaker 5: you know Riley moss in there because they did play
- 3:51Speaker 5: the nickel a lot in the second half and they
- 3:54Speaker 5: were a lot more I think on the assignments and
- 3:57Speaker 5: I think they'll be able to do it, But a
- 4:00Speaker 5: lot of this is hanging on Ken Wallace holed up
- 4:02Speaker 5: on the outside, uh when they are in that nickel package,
- 4:07Speaker 5: and I think people are gonna put him in a lot.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Well, they did announced via Twitter they signed Quintin Newsome today,
- 4:13Speaker 4: so that's probably a sign that they don't love the
- 4:15Speaker 4: health in the room. But might have done that if
- 4:17Speaker 4: you know, if it was just PS two, right lady,
- 4:19Speaker 4: But it does tell you that they got some concerns there.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And I will note that the Saints Chris Olave got
- 4:24Speaker 4: a concussion yesterday too, so he's in the same boat
- 4:27Speaker 4: as PS two. Not looking for him to play either. Hi,
- 4:31Speaker 4: have you had a chance to even peek at al
- 4:33Speaker 4: Spencer Rattler did? Do you think he'll still be the
- 4:36Speaker 4: guy by the time the Broncos get to him Thursday?
- 4:39Speaker 1: Right?
- 4:39Speaker 5: You know again, and it'd be you know, we don't
- 4:41Speaker 5: know until they say so, but it would be hard
- 4:43Speaker 5: for me to believe you could just flip it around
- 4:45Speaker 5: for a Thursday game if you want to make a
- 4:47Speaker 5: big change like that.
- 4:48Speaker 3: So I think I think they're approaching it like they'll
- 4:52Speaker 3: get Rattler real quick.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Just I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I if Taysom
- 4:57Speaker 4: Hill's ribs are better, do you think they'd start him
- 5:00Speaker 4: or is that still too big a change Like you
- 5:02Speaker 4: talked about.
- 5:03Speaker 5: I think coming off the injury and only one real
- 5:05Speaker 5: day of practice for a quarterback that's now he's been
- 5:08Speaker 5: there a long time and knows what they're doing, So
- 5:13Speaker 5: you know, he sort of asked the profile you could
- 5:15Speaker 5: do it.
- 5:15Speaker 3: If you want.
- 5:16Speaker 5: But again, a guy coming off injury with one real
- 5:20Speaker 5: day on the field, that's an awful lot to ask.
- 5:23Speaker 5: But again, they've they haven't won since the two game
- 5:27Speaker 5: outbursts to start the season, so you know that that
- 5:30Speaker 5: puts everything on the table.
- 5:32Speaker 3: If if you're the.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Saints going back and looking at kind of what Spencer
- 5:37Speaker 1: Ratler did yesterday, very good first half and not so
- 5:41Speaker 1: much in the second half. It seemed as though the
- 5:43Speaker 1: game plan for Todd Bowles, he was pretty happy to
- 5:45Speaker 1: try and play coverage against him in that first half
- 5:48Speaker 1: and Rattler had a little bit of luck. They got
- 5:49Speaker 1: a special team's touchdown as well yesterday, that being the
- 5:52Speaker 1: New Orleans Saints second half, they just sent the house
- 5:56Speaker 1: after Spencer Ratler and he really really struggled against that
- 6:00Speaker 1: kind of pressure. If your advanced, Joseph obviously take note
- 6:05Speaker 1: of that. This could be a big rush five, rush
- 6:08Speaker 1: six kind of affair for the Broncos coming up here
- 6:11Speaker 1: on Thursday.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Yeah, especially after you look at the you look at
- 6:15Speaker 5: the second half of yesterday's game.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think Herbert threw.
- 6:20Speaker 5: It eight times in the second half something like that,
- 6:22Speaker 5: or you know, in that neighborhood. And but they were aggressive.
- 6:27Speaker 5: They had their five and six man rush packages going
- 6:31Speaker 5: in the second half, and they did it out of
- 6:35Speaker 5: even the base defense fronts a couple of times. So
- 6:40Speaker 5: that's a sign of some aggressiveness. And I think they
- 6:43Speaker 5: would they would go after himsel if it was Rattler,
- 6:45Speaker 5: because I do think they feel very good about Masson.
- 6:49Speaker 5: McMillan and Levi Wallace has been in the league seven
- 6:52Speaker 5: years and he started for the Steelers, so you know,
- 6:55Speaker 5: he's played in an aggressive defense where a lots expected
- 6:58Speaker 5: of the corner.
- 6:58Speaker 3: So I I do think they.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Feel good about who they have, but uh, you know
- 7:04Speaker 5: that's not certain, and you're just not going to duplicate
- 7:08Speaker 5: the comfort level you have with a guy like him.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Certain brings you predictability because you know he's either going
- 7:15Speaker 5: to handle his business or quarterbacks are just going to
- 7:18Speaker 5: avoid them all together. So it gives you a lot
- 7:22Speaker 5: more options as a play caller on defense, Uh, to
- 7:25Speaker 5: have him in the lineup, so they'll they'll have to
- 7:28Speaker 5: adjust and not be so visible and one on one
- 7:33Speaker 5: matchups all the time with you know, I doubt anybody
- 7:37Speaker 5: would follow a receiver at this point.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Uh, without certain All.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Right, Lakey, you're so gret at explaining this. I did
- 7:45Speaker 4: chat with Jeff Puttz here a bit today too. You
- 7:47Speaker 4: guys have always given me the same answer, but let's
- 7:50Speaker 4: visit it again. Why is it hard to take what
- 7:54Speaker 4: you did in the fourth quarter and make it a
- 7:56Speaker 4: full game plan?
- 7:58Speaker 5: Well, you know the reason I looks better for especially
- 8:02Speaker 5: young quarterbacks, is because you know, think of it as
- 8:06Speaker 5: a restaurant menu. When you're in the first quarter, the
- 8:09Speaker 5: menu's got like seventy to one hundred items on it,
- 8:14Speaker 5: and when you're in the hurry up or there're no
- 8:16Speaker 5: huddle in the fourth quarter and catch up mode it
- 8:19Speaker 5: might have ten or twelve items on it, So a
- 8:22Speaker 5: quarterback is gonna be more comfortable in that scenario because
- 8:26Speaker 5: there's just a lot less to deal with. And then
- 8:30Speaker 5: you couple that with a defense back in its safeties
- 8:34Speaker 5: off and it just wants to keep everything in front
- 8:36Speaker 5: of it because it has a three score lead. That
- 8:39Speaker 5: usually leads to some yards and even in the Broncos
- 8:43Speaker 5: case yesterday, a touchdown or two. But it's not real.
- 8:47Speaker 5: And even Sean Payton said after the game, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 5: he's very hesitant to say, you know, that's a good
- 8:54Speaker 5: thing and they should do it all the time, but
- 8:56Speaker 5: it is that limited menu, and when they try to
- 8:59Speaker 5: do it earlier in the game, it wasn't nearly as
- 9:02Speaker 5: successful because the defense is playing you, honest at that point,
- 9:05Speaker 5: they are playing you straight up. They're playing you to
- 9:08Speaker 5: their game planned ways of doing things, and it was
- 9:13Speaker 5: a lot bigger struggle for the Broncos. In fact, they
- 9:17Speaker 5: they had two penalties and a turnover when they tried
- 9:19Speaker 5: it earlier, when the defense was in its usual place.
- 9:24Speaker 5: So if you do it a lot early in the game,
- 9:27Speaker 5: you need a quarterback who's very comfortable when the backfoot
- 9:30Speaker 5: hits to just deliver the ball, and if it goes
- 9:34Speaker 5: beyond that, it gives the defense some nice predictability because
- 9:38Speaker 5: they know they're working off a shorter menu too.
- 9:41Speaker 3: So that's that's the crux of it.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it's again you get that cover four look coming
- 9:47Speaker 1: into the fourth quarter and you start to run a
- 9:50Speaker 1: little bit of tempo. Nicks tends to get more comfortable
- 9:54Speaker 1: as games go along, but still leggy. What what can
- 9:59Speaker 1: show undo and what can they do offensively to help
- 10:02Speaker 1: him out a little bit early earlier in games? I mean,
- 10:06Speaker 1: And yet as I asked that question, I look at
- 10:08Speaker 1: it and I go, you know what, that first throw
- 10:10Speaker 1: to Mims, that's a good aggressive throw that an NFL
- 10:12Speaker 1: quarterback has to be able to make, and he sales
- 10:14Speaker 1: the damn thing and it gets tips and it gets
- 10:16Speaker 1: intercepted right there, Like help him out, But also at
- 10:20Speaker 1: some point, dude just has to make accurate throws.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, And the uncomfortable answer for everyone is
- 10:27Speaker 5: some of this is just time.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Rookie quarterback.
- 10:30Speaker 5: He has to be more comfortable in other things. I mean,
- 10:35Speaker 5: yesterday they're in the shotgun probably eighty percent of the time.
- 10:40Speaker 5: And that's fine, and teams succeed doing that, but you
- 10:45Speaker 5: need a quarterback very comfortable moving the ball to all
- 10:49Speaker 5: parts of the field. You put a guy in the
- 10:52Speaker 5: shotgun and spread everything out to give him the clean looks,
- 10:55Speaker 5: which is what they want to do with a rookie quarterback,
- 10:58Speaker 5: give them the cleanest picture he can get. But to
- 11:02Speaker 5: make that work, he's got to work all sort of
- 11:07Speaker 5: sections of the field, and they're not. You know, they're
- 11:10Speaker 5: basically working you know, a lot of defensive coaches, I know,
- 11:15Speaker 5: divided into six six you know, blocks of real estate,
- 11:21Speaker 5: and they're working the three by the line of scrimmage
- 11:24Speaker 5: and that's roughly it.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Right now. They still they've played six games.
- 11:28Speaker 5: They have three plays of over thirty yards in the
- 11:32Speaker 5: passing game. I mean some teams have that in two drives,
- 11:36Speaker 5: and so it's it's just a combination. We know everybody
- 11:40Speaker 5: wants him to grow up so fast, but a lot
- 11:42Speaker 5: of this is until he's more comfortable under center, until
- 11:46Speaker 5: he's more comfortable and condensed formations, until he's more comfortable
- 11:51Speaker 5: in a three step drop, in a five step drop,
- 11:53Speaker 5: until he's more comfortable doing more things. They're running a
- 11:58Speaker 5: very limited playbook defenses.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Know that, yep, mistakes made early and you're taking out
- 12:05Speaker 1: of your script. And that's life for the Broncos with
- 12:07Speaker 1: a rookie quarterback. Jeff Legwald. Everybody ESPN read his stuff
- 12:11Speaker 1: right there. He'll keep you updated on everything going on
- 12:14Speaker 1: with her ten this week, but very very very extremely
- 12:17Speaker 1: long shot that he would be able to go by Thursday. Leggy,
- 12:21Speaker 1: good work as always, man, Thank you, Thanks dolls. Jeff
- 12:24Speaker 1: Legwald's appearance is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 12:29Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers ib W Local sixty eight. You start
- 12:33Speaker 1: with a job, you end with a career.
