- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah Chapter 9
- 0:20and I believe we'll get through the end of the chapter and then
- 0:23the first portion of chapter 10. Once we start moving through,
- 0:30we're, by the way, we're back in some prophecies specifically
- 0:33from the Lord. We're going to begin today in
- 0:38God's message against the northern nation of Israel.
- 0:43So Isaiah's prophesying from the southern Kingdom of Judah and
- 0:48he's first preaching against Israel who has allied themselves
- 0:52with their northern neighbor Arum against the southern
- 0:57Kingdom of Judah and wanting to take over and install a puppet
- 1:00king. But God is he is not OK with
- 1:03this. And especially those that would
- 1:05go against their own ancestral family instead of instead the
- 1:13northern Kingdom of Israel is teaming up with people that by
- 1:17their phraseology, these would be Gentiles.
- 1:20These would be those that are not part of the same covenant
- 1:23people of God. And yet they are allying
- 1:25themselves with foreign nations against fellow children of
- 1:30Abraham. So we're going to begin reading
- 1:32in verse #8 of Isaiah 9. It says this.
- 1:37The Lord sent a message against Jacob.
- 1:40It came against Israel. All the people, Ephraim and the
- 1:44inhabitants of Samaria will know it.
- 1:47Very often the northern Kingdom of Israel was typified.
- 1:52It was called by the name of Ephraim, which was one of the
- 1:55very predominant tribes, those northern 10 tribes of Israel.
- 2:00And then Samaria is that capital city there of that area.
- 2:05So everyone, the most notable tribes, the inhabitants of the
- 2:09capital city, they will know about this word that is coming
- 2:12from the Lord against Israel. They will say with pride and
- 2:17arrogance, the bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with
- 2:21cut stones. The sycamores have been cut
- 2:24down, but we'll replace them with Cedars.
- 2:27There's a recognition of the fact that their nation is going
- 2:30through a hard time, but their response is not humility and
- 2:36turning to the Lord. It's we're going to build back
- 2:39better. I believe there's been some kind
- 2:43of novelization and theatrics pulled of like, OK, this phrase,
- 2:48this verse 10 here in Isaiah 9. This is like a secret code that
- 2:53if you say this, then it is certain that God is going to
- 2:56bring back bad things on top of you.
- 2:59And the specific book or writer or author that I'm, I'm
- 3:04mentioning said because of people in the wake of 911 and
- 3:10everything that happened there, them saying some things kind of
- 3:14like this of yes, there's been hardships, but we're going to
- 3:18build back and it's going to be even better before.
- 3:20That's a very natural human thing to say that does not
- 3:23unlock a, you know, couple 1000 year old curse on your on your
- 3:29actions or on your buildings that you put up.
- 3:32Just so you guys know, in case you've ever seen some of that
- 3:36craziness online, the Bible is not a witchcraft book.
- 3:41Like, you can't just take phrases from it.
- 3:44You can't just take collections of words and magically either
- 3:49curse or bless yourself. The Bible is not a book of
- 3:53spells. The Bible is the book about our
- 3:55relationship with God. So I just wanted to clarify that
- 3:59real quick because I've seen some knuckleheaded things online
- 4:02for that. Verse #11 So Israel, despite
- 4:06their sin, being judged for their sin, they're not
- 4:09repenting. They're just going to keep on
- 4:11doing more of the same. So verse #11 Yahweh has raised
- 4:14up Resin's adversaries against him and stirred up his enemies.
- 4:20And Resin here is the ruler of that northern Kingdom of Aram,
- 4:25modern day Syria. And so Resin's enemies are
- 4:29coming against him, stirred up by raised up by Yahweh and in
- 4:34the east. And Felicia from the West have
- 4:37consumed Israel with open mouths.
- 4:40And all this his anger has not turned away and his hand is
- 4:44still raised to strike. So God against Israel will bring
- 4:49both Aram and Felicia to kind of do, if you will, a pincher move
- 4:56that it destroys Israel in part. Verse #13 the people who did not
- 5:02turn to him, who struck them, they did not seek Yahweh of
- 5:06heaven's armies. So Yahweh cut off Israeli head
- 5:10and tail, palm branch, and read in a single day.
- 5:14Okay, what does he mean by that verse #15 the head is the elder,
- 5:18the honored one. The tale is the prophet, the one
- 5:22teaching lies. The leaders of the people
- 5:25mislead them, and those they mislead are swallowed up.
- 5:30Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over Israel's young men
- 5:35and has no compassion on its fatherless and widows, for
- 5:38everyone is a godless evil doer, and every mouth speaks folly.
- 5:44In all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is
- 5:48still raised to strike that there would come against Israel,
- 5:52against its leadership, both political and pseudo spiritual.
- 5:57God would bring in judgment the prophets of Israel, so we're
- 6:01known far and wide that they would only affirm whatever the
- 6:06leaders of that northern Kingdom of Israel wanted.
- 6:09You can look at the stories of Ahab, Jeroboam, many other kings
- 6:15over and over again. These were a level with you
- 6:20guys. I can't remember if the word is
- 6:21sycophant or sycophant. Whichever one of those it is,
- 6:25that's what these prophets were for the kings of Israel.
- 6:29This is the worst kind of person to have in proximity to a ruler.
- 6:34You need someone like a prophet Nathan, who to David the king of
- 6:41the United Kingdom of Israel, who had one of his, who had one
- 6:48of his closest friends and greatest warriors killed on the
- 6:54battlefield so that he could cover up his adultery and
- 6:59impregnation of that man's wife. Nathan the prophet looked that
- 7:04King David in the face and said you are the man that has done
- 7:09this evil. We need people in whatever
- 7:12nation of the world that you live in.
- 7:14You need some true prophets that will not sign off on what the
- 7:19king does. Most people will, especially if
- 7:23they want to get ahead in life, they will approve of a King's
- 7:26actions. They'll they'll rubber stamp
- 7:28everything a particular political party wants to do.
- 7:31A godly response is I can affirm some things and I can be glad
- 7:36when a king does good. And when David brings the Ark of
- 7:39the Covenant into Jerusalem, praise the Lord.
- 7:42This is wonderful. The worship of God is
- 7:46preeminent. This is a good thing, but then a
- 7:49godly prophet can also say, no, David, what you did in adultery
- 7:54and murder is bad. And there will be consequences
- 7:57from the Lord for this, for our interactions with people today.
- 8:04People are so intent on being on quote UN quote, the winning side
- 8:11of whatever that is, whether, whether it's I want to be on the
- 8:14right side of history. And so I believe if I espouse
- 8:17these particular beliefs, then history will look on me kindly.
- 8:21And so therefore, whatever team has these values that they hold,
- 8:27I'm going to be on that team. And everything that the opposite
- 8:31political party is doing is bad. Like any idea that they have,
- 8:36it's terrible. It's awful.
- 8:37Every detail of their plan is against God and is also the
- 8:42dumbest thing that has ever been said.
- 8:44That is not the way that godly prophets worked in Scripture.
- 8:49It was you can affirm the good. And because every person is made
- 8:52in the image of God, every person is going to have some
- 8:56things in reflection of God's nature and character that you
- 9:00can affirm godly virtues that do not have to come only through
- 9:06the Holy Spirit. So a person can still be kind
- 9:08even if they're not a Christian. And so where there is kindness,
- 9:11we can affirm that when someone is fair and just in their
- 9:16dealings, they, they deal rightly in, in business or
- 9:20whatever it is, we can affirm those things without rubber
- 9:24stamping everything that someone does.
- 9:29So here what God is doing is for Israel, both those that are in
- 9:34charge, those that are revered, trusted, asked for advice, and
- 9:37those that spread lies to the people and LED the people in bad
- 9:41ways and said, yeah, you don't have to follow Yahweh.
- 9:44You can follow Baal. And as you look through 1st and
- 9:472nd Kings and 1st and second Chronicles, you can see over and
- 9:50over again the mess that the kings of Israel and the prophets
- 9:53of Israel led the people into. But the people did not say, Hey,
- 9:58we are like God's chosen people and we know the temple is right
- 10:02down here in Jerusalem, and so we're going to choose to obey
- 10:05God. Even as you get into the minor
- 10:08prophets, you can read through several of the minor prophets
- 10:11that were prophesying to the northern Kingdom of Israel that
- 10:14were true genuine prophets of Yahweh.
- 10:17And they told the people, here's what you need to be doing.
- 10:20But the people did not listen and they did not choose good or
- 10:24godly leaders for themselves. They followed into idolatry and
- 10:29evil. And so that's why God says in
- 10:31verse #17 that even those that God looks on fondly and, and
- 10:36cares for in their categories, the fatherless and the widows,
- 10:41those are people that we were told in Isaiah one, that we
- 10:43needed to care for. That this was a matter that the
- 10:46southern Kingdom of Judah were not caring for the fatherless
- 10:49and widows. And that was one of, if you
- 10:50will, the list of crimes that God had that the southern
- 10:55Kingdom of Judah had done. God says even the fatherless and
- 10:58the widows in Israel are evil doers, and every mouth is
- 11:03speaking folly. That's a lack of wisdom.
- 11:06It is evil against the Lord. And so God says from the
- 11:09greatest and the leaders and the prophets all the way down to the
- 11:13orphans, all of you guys are messed up.
- 11:15And so God is bringing on this judgement on to them.
- 11:19Verse #18 For wickedness burns like a fire that consumes thorns
- 11:24and briars and Kindles the forest thicket, so that they go
- 11:27up in a column of smoke. So he says here this wickedness
- 11:32that is there, it's destroying everything in the land.
- 11:35And so God is going to come through and clean house for
- 11:39summer. 19 The land is scorched by the wrath of Yahweh of
- 11:43heaven's armies, and the people are like fuel for the fire.
- 11:46No one has compassion on his brother.
- 11:50They carve meat on the right, but they are still hungry.
- 11:52They have eaten on the left, but they are still not satisfied.
- 11:56Each one eats the flesh of his arm.
- 11:58Manasseh eats Ephraim and Ephraim Manasseh together.
- 12:02Both are against Judah. In all this, his anger has not
- 12:05turned away and his hand is still raised to strike.
- 12:10Here, if you will, God is bringing to completion.
- 12:14He's hurrying up the process that Israel is already doing.
- 12:18They are already destroying each other through violence and evil.
- 12:23There's a cannibalistic nature to the nation that they are
- 12:27destroying themselves. One can't help but think even in
- 12:34our nation of America, that so often we do this, that there is
- 12:38murder and animosity and violence between various
- 12:44factions in our nation. And this should not be.
- 12:48Let me state it very clearly to you as my audience because if
- 12:51you're in here, you know, 12 minutes in, you're here for
- 12:55something. The child of God should never be
- 12:58the one that is seeking to harm or murder someone.
- 13:03We can certainly think about self protection and and
- 13:08protection of like 1's family or of 1's church.
- 13:13You can think even as Jesus and the apostles go into the Garden
- 13:18of Gethsemane that Jesus make sure that they have at least a
- 13:22sword. And Peter says we, we've got 2
- 13:25and Jesus says it's enough that there is there a protection of
- 13:32that family of believers. And I think that could be
- 13:34extended to 1's self as the circumstances may be.
- 13:40So self-defense can be a good thing, but the child of God
- 13:45should never be the one that's out pursuing, looking to harm
- 13:49another person. And a child of God should never
- 13:51be eager to take someone else's life if there comes a point
- 13:55where that might be truly necessary.
- 13:58That is a grave sadness. And I have people even that I've
- 14:02met in my life that have had to take a life in self-defense.
- 14:07And it's something that eats at their soul that they had no
- 14:10desire for that to happen, but it did.
- 14:13Can I encourage you have that kind of mindset that every
- 14:17person is made in the image of God?
- 14:19And as with Jesus, may our heart not be that anyone would perish,
- 14:23but that all would come to repentance.
- 14:27Yeah, I, I think I'll stop there for that particular portion.
- 14:30We'll end here with the 1st 4 verses of chapter 10.
- 14:34Woe to those enacting crooked statutes and writing oppressive
- 14:38laws to keep the poor from getting a fair trial and to
- 14:42deprive the needy among my people of justice, so that
- 14:46widows can be their spoil and they can plunder the fatherless.
- 14:51What will you do on the day of punishment when devastation
- 14:54comes from far away? Who will you run to for help?
- 14:58Where will you leave your wealth?
- 15:00There will be nothing to do except Crouch among the
- 15:03prisoners or fall among the slain.
- 15:05In all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is
- 15:09still raised to strike. So God is bringing incredible
- 15:12judgement onto Israel, and it just keeps coming Here.
- 15:18In this last portion, God says that the laws of a nation can be
- 15:23a cause for God's divine justice, and specifically he
- 15:26says laws that disenfranchise the fatherless, the poor, and
- 15:32the widows. There can be very often today
- 15:40such a love for the accumulation of money that the repercussions
- 15:47for the poor or the needy are completely overlooked.
- 15:52But God says this is something that the children of God ought
- 15:55to care about. And I want to encourage you as
- 15:58much as it is in your hands, seek to advocate for the poor,
- 16:04the fatherless, and the widow, that they would get a fair
- 16:08shake, that they would not be disenfranchised through bills
- 16:13that are passed. That if there's something that
- 16:15perhaps say, benefits a corporation, but at the cost of
- 16:20a like poor or needy neighborhood.
- 16:23At least from my reading of Scripture, it would seem that we
- 16:27ought to prioritize human flourishing over profits and
- 16:33wealth. And when I see profits, there I
- 16:35mean PROFITS, profits and wealth.
- 16:39How that might look an application.
- 16:41Frankly, I'm not a policy maker. I have not devoted enough of my
- 16:47time to studying specific bills to know how that might look.
- 16:53But it's something that even as I read through this passage of
- 16:57Scripture, I feel some conviction that I ought to at
- 17:02least be aware and care in a few months from the time that this
- 17:10post, we'll have some different primaries and some different
- 17:14elections that happen. And I think it it would behoove
- 17:19me as a child of God, even as I talk about the prophets who were
- 17:22liars and just said whatever the the kings wanted them to, I want
- 17:28to make sure that I take care to look at some of the bills and to
- 17:33hear feedback and some different things.
- 17:36Frankly, many Christians, some Christians are overly involved
- 17:40in politics in the worst kind of way where it's just talking to
- 17:43all of their Facebook friends about it and not not engaging in
- 17:49the actual discussion with the actual politicians.
- 17:53But many like myself, are probably not involved enough in
- 17:57politics to be able to share that light of Jesus in a
- 18:03biblical worldview. Because as you look around our
- 18:06nation, it doesn't look like the early church or Acts 2 where
- 18:11those that are widows are being cared for.
- 18:15Those that have lots are voluntarily being generous with
- 18:19what they have and caring for those need.
- 18:21As you look at our nation, it's just animosity and strife.
- 18:26There's not a care that there is some care, certainly, especially
- 18:30after 2000 years of Christianity and a nation built predominantly
- 18:36by by Christians and some deists and theists, that they had some
- 18:42things built in to be able to care for some of what Jesus
- 18:46would call the least of these. And so I think those are all
- 18:49good and worthy things, but let's, as the people of God,
- 18:54care about this. If this is something that can
- 18:57bring judgement on our nation, then I think we need to be part
- 19:00of the solution to say, let's advocate for those that cannot
- 19:05advocate for themselves. There's many, many ways that we
- 19:09could attempt to do that. But I want to say at the very
- 19:13least be aware of some of the bills and things that are
- 19:18passing through either on the City Council level, if you have
- 19:22that on the state level, those things that actually pertain to
- 19:26you. We can all complain or rejoice
- 19:29in things that other states are doing and their bills and their
- 19:33politicians. But when it comes to it, God has
- 19:37you if you're if this is applicable for you, you're in
- 19:40Maryland right now. If you're part of our church or
- 19:43you're in whatever state or country you are, as you listen
- 19:45to this, let's be faithful to try to make an impact or try to
- 19:51care, try to speak into what we encounter within our own local
- 19:58areas. I think that would be glorifying
- 20:01to God the ultimate hope and rejoicing.
- 20:05The ultimate lifting up of a nation cannot come through its
- 20:09laws. The laws can be just or unjust,
- 20:11can invite the. Judgement of God or can be
- 20:14things that please the heart of God, but what is ultimately
- 20:17necessary is a change of heart. And that's what Israel didn't
- 20:20experience. Even though God brought
- 20:22judgement, it didn't make them go.
- 20:24We need to turn to God. They just said we're going to
- 20:26continue on the path that we've been going down.
- 20:28So don't have that mindset that you're just going to keep on
- 20:32doing what you do in and building up wealth and building
- 20:35up, you know, bigger and bigger buildings.
- 20:38No, my friend, love for God and love for people is the point,
- 20:43and let's pursue that with everything we got.
- 20:44Thanks for tuning in. I know it's been a little bit of
- 20:48a heavier episode than the last episode where we got to look a
- 20:51bunch at Jesus, but Jesus is our model for how we do this.
- 20:54Jesus spoke to Herod and to Pontius Pilate, spoke into some
- 21:00political realities in ways that didn't really make people in his
- 21:04day happy. But it was it was what was right
- 21:08that ultimately our relationship with God and with man is
- 21:13paramount, way more so than the things of earth that pass away.
- 21:17So lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.
- 21:20Thanks for tuning in and see you next episode.
