- 0:07Welcome back to another edition of the Justin Time podcast.
- 0:10I'm your host, Justin, and we got Will here with us today.
- 0:14My guy, I get. It buddy, you're.
- 0:17Doing fantastic. Singing you.
- 0:18That's fantastic. Yeah, I know.
- 0:21It's been a while. Yes, Sir.
- 0:23Look, it's been a while for it's been a while for us.
- 0:25Not much for y'all. We popped these things out very
- 0:28quickly. Yeah, we, yeah, we just, we just
- 0:31want to be proactive with the content.
- 0:32You know, that's why we I'm privileged to be on the show
- 0:35with my guy, for one. But just like who saw it was
- 0:38proactive enough and like just saw like, you know, putting more
- 0:41content out on the weekly basis just to have you guys covered.
- 0:45So like that's a privilege to be able to work with somebody who
- 0:48actually prioritizes the following, you know, just don't
- 0:52say as a cliche just for, you know, just for goodwill, but
- 0:56just actually means it, you know you.
- 0:58Know what I'm saying? Before we start again, I'm going
- 1:00to give a shout out to Go Gloveworks located in Denham
- 1:05Springs. We talked about it last episode,
- 1:07but there are located in Denham Springs right outside of BR and
- 1:14they're on Facebook at Go Gloveworks.
- 1:17That's GAUX Glove URORX, and then they're on Instagram and
- 1:24TikTok. It Go Gloveworks 44 spelled GAUX
- 1:29GLOVEURUO RX44 and I'll pin that in the description of the video
- 1:36and everything. Go check them out.
- 1:38They do really good work but you know, we got some football to
- 1:41talk about again. You know, it's like, you know,
- 1:44like said, you know about my guy, just so you know, we've
- 1:46been really just doing like early breakdowns of the LSU
- 1:50football season, their their upcoming schedule.
- 1:53And it's like breaking out each, you know, opponent of their on
- 1:55their docket just now. Granted, we know it's a deep in
- 1:59the middle of the summer. So there's only so much we're
- 2:00going to really tell you guys about.
- 2:02It's like we don't know everything.
- 2:03It's just still so much that has to be taking place.
- 2:06So we're just going to give you something like quick, quick
- 2:09hitter informations about, you know, each, you know, as you
- 2:12have we done already leading up to this episode.
- 2:15It's quick hitter information as that comes out and we'll just
- 2:18briefly talk about it. So we have LSU Media Day, the
- 2:22SEC media Days. You know, I think it was this
- 2:25week. I know it's coming up next week,
- 2:27but no Sam Leavitt at media weeks.
- 2:31This media week this year we've got wit Weeks, TJ Daughtry and
- 2:38Treated as Green that are joining Kiffin and the media
- 2:44days in Tampa this year and they like to the media likes to make
- 2:49a lot about Leavitt not being there, but I don't find that's
- 2:55really that big of a deal. I mean, it's just it's just a
- 2:59mean like a talking shows, like a like an in depth talking
- 3:03session. I mean, like, I don't, I don't
- 3:05think it's life or death personally.
- 3:07And just for it. So so not to be there.
- 3:10Yeah, look, there's no to me right now, at this moment,
- 3:13there's no greater ambassador for LSU football than what,
- 3:17weeks and trade as green. Exactly.
- 3:20Yeah, I'm, I'm totally like you. You're not going to be bad off
- 3:23with those guys out of state. So I'm not I'm not too worked up
- 3:27about that. Yeah.
- 3:28And then with TJ Daughtry, we've got the transfer, so I've taken
- 3:35care of. I like it.
- 3:37I like it. It's a very defensive heavy, you
- 3:39know. Yeah, but we're going to get
- 3:43into A&M, you know, But we got some news yesterday that I think
- 3:47we should hit, and yesterday being July 15th, Bert Jones
- 3:53getting his jersey. Retired.
- 3:56His number 7 jersey will be retired on November 14th, so.
- 4:00Which is massive, you know, obviously.
- 4:02Yeah. So here's my question for.
- 4:04You. So here's my question for you.
- 4:07OK, we've had a lot of legendary number sevens throughout LSU's
- 4:12history. There we have.
- 4:14Let's say so we're retiring #7 for Bert Jones.
- 4:18We go in and we want to retire. Patrick Peterson, the honey
- 4:23badger. Yeah.
- 4:25What do we put up? We just put up 7 and then
- 4:28Matthew and seven and then Peterson.
- 4:32You know, that's so that's a fascinating question, you know,
- 4:35because like when you have obviously First off, you know,
- 4:38congratulations, no shout out to this like this football icon for
- 4:41this program's history and much deserved, you know, just like,
- 4:45you know, we could, you know, that's a lot and really sort of
- 4:48like information that we could give you, but just for the sake
- 4:50of time and the sake of, you know, this this question that
- 4:53you presented me with, but. Just I was going to put you on
- 4:56the spot. Yeah, I I already knew like you,
- 4:59you like you already you mentor your words doesn't shock me.
- 5:02No, but this I think if you're going to retire a number because
- 5:06on a normal circumstances, you know, it wouldn't be that you
- 5:10know, significant of a question or a deal, but just like because
- 5:14we have this Jersey tradition, you know, like we have two
- 5:17Jersey traditions not. Only the number 7.
- 5:19We've got the number 18. That does the same thing.
- 5:23Yeah, like Matt Mark gave it to Jacob Hester.
- 5:26Jacob Hester passed it on. We've got all these icons
- 5:29wearing the same number over the years.
- 5:32Like we go to retired Jacob Hester's number 18, you know, or
- 5:36we retire Matt Monks joke, you know, bringing us a first
- 5:40national championship of the 2000s.
- 5:45We go retire that. So what happens when we go to
- 5:49retire Hester? Who do we put his first number
- 5:52that he wore? Because a lot of these, they
- 5:54were passed down. They were already on the team.
- 5:56They were already, they already had a number.
- 5:58They just changed. Records.
- 6:00So we did you just retire? Did we retire that number?
- 6:02Yeah, so The thing is like since we because Burt Jones is like
- 6:06going to like a legendary, you know, yeah, legendary threshold
- 6:11in the program's history, you still retire to jersey, but like
- 6:14still keeping it circulation. Yeah, personally I'm I'm we're
- 6:18just like I know like, you know, I know jersey number retired was
- 6:21very sacred, as they should be. But like when you have a program
- 6:24like LSU that has two jersey traditions, just number of
- 6:28traditions, I think that's a unique outlier where you can
- 6:32retire. You could acknowledge his Bert
- 6:35Jones is #7 but still keep it in circulation because of that it
- 6:38playmaker. Type guy and this is what I want
- 6:41to see, OK, because when Brian Kelly came and transferred it to
- 6:45you know #7 really transferred over to where anybody can wear
- 6:48it. Yeah.
- 6:50But I like the way they used to do it, where 18 was always
- 6:53offense and then #7 was the leader on defense.
- 6:57Yeah, just like because even I will say I think Brendan like in
- 7:00the 2011 season, Brendan Taylor was the free safety like he did
- 7:03wear 18 if I remember, but like just.
- 7:06Yeah, I think. So yeah, just like.
- 7:08Didn't it's always start that way?
- 7:10But it kind of. Yeah, no, yeah, I'm much Yeah,
- 7:14Yeah, I know. Just like it's like I was
- 7:15looking at #18 is like that the team leader or one of like the
- 7:19celebrated team leaders and like the seven number seven was like
- 7:22that playmaker guys. So obviously, you know, if you
- 7:26know Patrick Peterson, Tyra, Matthew Leonard for the
- 7:29lightness this goes on. Yeah, You know, when I think
- 7:31about the playmakers on the, I think about the defensive side,
- 7:35the ball more than offense. Yeah, no, that's that's their
- 7:39legacy. I mean, just because we've been
- 7:40watching the sport, just the game.
- 7:43The game changer really. On the offensive side of the
- 7:47ball, 1/4 a good quarterback will make or break you.
- 7:50Yeah, yeah. That's.
- 7:51Fair. And that's one player on
- 7:53offense. But when you look at the
- 7:54defensive side of the ball, they're all over the field, you
- 7:59know? Yeah.
- 8:00And that's that's fair to say. Yeah, and as LSU has proven, has
- 8:04proven in the past, in recent years under Brian Kelly, if you
- 8:07don't have a playmaker on defense, you really ain't got
- 8:10nothing. Yeah, listen, I mean this and
- 8:13like you bring up great points to this.
- 8:14That's as long as we've been watching the program, you know,
- 8:17been growing up like that's the defense has been largely their
- 8:19identity. I know if people are not as
- 8:21familiar with the program, they they look at Joe Burrow, Jane
- 8:25Dance. I was like, oh they've always
- 8:26had this great quarter, but no, that's not their history as two
- 8:29outlying seasons by the 2 British plays in the history of
- 8:32the program in my. Look, if you'd have told me and
- 8:35you would have told me. Anybody around this that watches
- 8:37LSU and is an LSU fan that we would not one day not only have
- 8:411-2 Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks.
- 8:45Yes. We'd have laughed in your face.
- 8:48I like, I love how the camera zoomed in on you because like
- 8:50they, they deal with you like that's perfectly.
- 8:52You got to keep that in there like.
- 8:53We we would have laughed in your face if you'd have told us we'd
- 8:57have two and back when we were in college.
- 8:59If you'd have. Told us we'd had two Heisman
- 9:01Trophy winning quarterbacks. I would have laughed you out.
- 9:04That student union that we sat in and they want you in every
- 9:07day. Man, tradition, man, we got, we
- 9:10got a whole, we got all kind of stories.
- 9:12And like I will say like, and I'm glad you brought that up
- 9:14because The thing is I never, I didn't think I would live to see
- 9:18the day that we have a finalist for the Heisman, personally.
- 9:23We had Tyra Matthews. Tyra Matthews in 2011.
- 9:26Yeah, I think he was a finalist, but.
- 9:29Leonard Fournette got close to being a finalist.
- 9:31He was, I think he was like a semi finalist, semi finalist but
- 9:35but he didn't get, he wasn't a finalist though.
- 9:37No, and it made me so mad that year when he was about to break
- 9:40that record in Syracuse and Les Miles sat him.
- 9:46I wanted to go. Through that, I wanted to go
- 9:47through that TV and grab his big old head and shake it, see if
- 9:52there was a brain in there just rattling around somewhere.
- 9:55Yeah, man. But you know, we've got A&M
- 10:00forecasted and look, Texas A&M, we gave you a thank you during
- 10:06baseball season and y'all were laughing and y'all took over
- 10:10Death Valley last year and all of that, blah, blah, blah.
- 10:15And you got Marcel Reed running his mouth about losing the LSUI.
- 10:19Wouldn't know I'd never do that. Or guess what?
- 10:21It's going to happen, y'all. I owe you a thank you because
- 10:28our program was on the wrong side.
- 10:30It was trending downward and y'all think y'all killed the
- 10:33program? Y'all saved it so thank you.
- 10:37Everyone plays a part, you know, I'm looking at the all time, you
- 10:40know, before we got on, just obviously I'm looking at
- 10:43Wizipedia. So just the all time series
- 10:45record. LSU was currently currently
- 10:47leads the all time series 32 to 25 and three ties.
- 10:51So obviously A&M is on the current 2 game-winning streak.
- 10:55The longest winning streak for A&M is five.
- 10:57The longest winning streak for us is 6.
- 11:00So. Yeah, but you know, and look,
- 11:02it's a more respectable program now that they got rid of jumbo
- 11:05shrimp. Jumbo shrimp, they're not making
- 11:10rings and stuff and cups for overtime.
- 11:14Win of the regular season. Man, they they wilt that to the.
- 11:17Ground But look, y'all, like I said, we were nice to y'all
- 11:23doing baseball season. Baseball season was kind of a
- 11:25the thank you for helping us take out the trash that is Brian
- 11:28Kelly. But now we've actually got a
- 11:31football coach and we've got a good staff and all of our
- 11:34players are going to put their big boy pants on and when y'all
- 11:38come to Death Valley this year, we go run y'all out.
- 11:41That's the plan. They go Marcel Reed, they go
- 11:44knock you on your teeth. But you know, I'll give it to
- 11:49him. Last year they were good.
- 11:50And Mike Elko is a good. He's good at rebuilding all.
- 11:54Right, listen, like if listen, I I said if you could build a
- 11:57respectable program at Duke in football, yes, the you've done
- 12:01pretty, you've done pretty decent for yourself.
- 12:03Yeah. And you know, looking at their
- 12:05schedule, I think they're toughest 2 games, two out of the
- 12:09three toughest games or 4, three out of the four toughest games
- 12:16are going to be away games. Yep.
- 12:19They have Texas at home to end the season.
- 12:23They have LSU away in beginning part of have a season, Alabama
- 12:28away and then they go to Oklahoma.
- 12:30You know that's right. So it's time to.
- 12:33Yeah, and you know, Elko, turn that program around, you know,
- 12:39and they're looking at the realistic ceiling is 10 and two
- 12:44and floor is 7 and five. I'm leaning towards 8 and 4, you
- 12:48know, just because Texas is always a big game and they're
- 12:51always a huge program. And that's a home game for them
- 12:55and it's I'm looking at ESPN tickets are low as 513 dollars
- 13:00for that Texans game. Goodness, grace.
- 13:03I know it's in state rivalry. I caught like Texas is a massive
- 13:06brand so I get it. Yeah, so, but you know.
- 13:10I do. We've got, they've got a new
- 13:13offensive coordinator. You know who's really if they
- 13:16really do this, they're not looking into their quarterback.
- 13:19Strengths, yeah. Because, you know, Marcel Reed
- 13:25only had 31169 passing yards with 25 touchdowns in 2025, you
- 13:30know? Yeah.
- 13:32That's not that impressive. Good numbers but that's not
- 13:35impressive for pass LED offense like this guy is going to want
- 13:39to come in and put. Yeah.
- 13:41I just, I know like you know his mobile when you have a mobility
- 13:44like mobile driven quarterback, you know, obviously you know
- 13:48your past time is going to be compromised to a great extent at
- 13:50times and not but just beyond what you like.
- 13:52I'm not saying it's airy, but just like it's, I mean, but
- 13:57we'll just see how it continues to develop that passing ability
- 14:01of his. Yeah.
- 14:02Just to like to build up in that resume.
- 14:05He kind of reminds me of, you know, Bryce Young, Tua Obama.
- 14:12Yeah. They weren't.
- 14:15They were made to be these elite passers.
- 14:18Yeah. But in reality, they just threw
- 14:21the ball up and they had really elite receivers that were there.
- 14:25And that's for sure. If the ball was nowhere near
- 14:28them, they got there because Nick Saban recruited outfielders
- 14:34who could track the ball. He recruited baseball players
- 14:37first and foremost to play football because they could
- 14:39track the ball. Yeah.
- 14:41And that's what they he did. And that's why we had, Alabama
- 14:44has had this string of great quarterbacks.
- 14:46It was great running quarterbacks, but when they
- 14:49passed the ball, they just threw it.
- 14:52When really it passed, they were just throwing it up.
- 14:55Yeah. And like you could say not to
- 14:57get on track too much, but just like you could say that similar
- 15:00criticism about Ohio State quarterbacks because they
- 15:03tailored, they tailored their quarter one day.
- 15:06I always respect the Ohio State. You can say what they want about
- 15:08their pro careers as quarterbacks, but just they
- 15:10always did an incredible job of tailoring to the quarterback
- 15:13strengths. Like you said, get the
- 15:14outfielders, get like the the big time playmakers to get track
- 15:18the ball down. You get the playmakers in the in
- 15:20the backfield and let the guys as the quarterbacks use the
- 15:23mobility. Yeah, but yeah.
- 15:26And I think, but going back to that, I think, you know, Marcel
- 15:30Reed, the games I've watched him that weren't against LSU because
- 15:34LSU, he just, they had no answer.
- 15:36For him, no, even even two years ago like this like because you
- 15:40know what kind of Wegman was in the game, you know, just they we
- 15:43had them locked up but they're like just made the quarterback
- 15:46switch, you know, and we just put us you know, put us off on
- 15:50our heels and you saw the result, unfortunately, but.
- 15:54So I think if we can contain him, this game looks like the
- 15:57first half of last year's game, right?
- 16:01You know, we don't contain him. It's going to be a long night,
- 16:04but I think with Lane Kiffin at the helm, Lane Kiffin is not
- 16:08going to go in at halftime and say, OK, we did these great
- 16:11things, let's not do those again.
- 16:14Let's do these. I'm convinced that to this day,
- 16:17I know I said I wasn't going to talk about Brian Kelly that
- 16:19much, but I to this day, I think he heard the rumors that if he
- 16:22lost that ANM game that he was getting fired.
- 16:26And when they were winning at halftime, he went in and made
- 16:28adjustments so he could get that big payout and get fired.
- 16:34But you know, realistically looking at their schedule and
- 16:38really not knowing anything about the Aggies this offseason,
- 16:41I think let me pull up their schedule in order, OK, They
- 16:45definitely get to win at home against Missouri State.
- 16:48Or is that? Who is that?
- 16:50Missouri State 6:00 Yeah. Missouri State, I was on the
- 16:53state. I can see that being a close
- 16:55one, but I'll give it to A&M since he's at home.
- 16:58First three games were at home. It's about first four to the
- 17:00first five are at home. Yeah, we were getting to
- 17:03Kentucky a little later, but I see A and M crashing.
- 17:06Yeah. Then I see him coming to Baton
- 17:09Rouge and getting their first loss of the season being too.
- 17:12Then they got Arkansas, and I can see him beating Arkansas.
- 17:17Missouri's just a joke. So they beat Missouri.
- 17:19You know, we got to get rid of these games like this where they
- 17:22play Citadel. Yeah.
- 17:24That's not even a game, that's just a bye weekend when I'm not
- 17:26counting that. But like 12:00 like that that
- 17:29thing they put on SCC network plus I'm like nobody.
- 17:34And you know, then I've got them dropping 1 to Bama because they
- 17:37go to Bama. They'll win against South
- 17:39Carolina. We'll talk about Tennessee later
- 17:41on, but I think that would be a close game.
- 17:43I think it'll be another close game at Oklahoma, and then I got
- 17:47them dropping their season finale again to Texas.
- 17:51That sound about right to me. So what's that?
- 17:53Nine and three? Yeah, Texas, 8:00 and 4:00.
- 17:56Yeah. To me that that that's
- 17:58realistic. That's realistic, yeah.
- 18:00Would you make any changes in those or?
- 18:02Nope, very realistic. But I don't know why we in, you
- 18:08know, on the Citadel, Texas A&M, Citadel thing, I think we've
- 18:12covered it, what we know about Texas A&M.
- 18:15And look, we're going to go back when it gets closer in August
- 18:20and we'll run down through all of these teams again.
- 18:22And just maybe one or two episodes we'll make take the
- 18:26first half of the season and look at all those things and see
- 18:30what changed when we looked at it.
- 18:32And then we'll go to the back half of the season and do the
- 18:34same thing. But I think right here is a good
- 18:37transition point because we brought up Citadel and A&M in
- 18:41games that I really think we shouldn't play and talking about
- 18:45McNeese steak. Yeah, like, and like, you know,
- 18:48we, it's, it's interesting you brought it up because like, you
- 18:50know, it's tough to really, granted, like I said before,
- 18:53we're in the summer Midsummer, so there's only so much you're
- 18:55going to really know regardless. But I went on Mcneese's website,
- 18:59the main thing I could think about, just like Navarre
- 19:02Chevrolet, Jersey Pats have been revealed for all McNeese teams.
- 19:05So obviously Jersey Pats, you know, very, for some people, it
- 19:08could be a contentious topic. I mean, listen, business is
- 19:10business at the end of the day, people got to accept that it's,
- 19:13it's, it's always about the dollar.
- 19:15So it's just so just whatever, whatever they can do to bring
- 19:19more money for that program, they're going to do.
- 19:21Yeah, it's legal. Like they're going to do it.
- 19:23Speaking of the Jersey patches, what is it?
- 19:27I talked about this with you last week with the Protect
- 19:31College Sports Act of 2026. You know it's a bad thing when
- 19:38Alabama and Auburn put out a joint statement.
- 19:41Against it that that that this is like a new Do you think
- 19:45you've seen it all? You ever seen that?
- 19:47Yeah, and then LSU came out the most I think is the most
- 19:51recently, most recent school to come out against it.
- 19:54But you know it's bad and something that's not good when
- 19:59Alabama and Auburn put. Out a joint statement report
- 20:03joints not not with the gun behind their heads yeah nothing
- 20:07they. Voluntarily put out a joint.
- 20:09Statement, I want you, I just want you to see the I just want
- 20:13you guys to understand the gravity of what's going on.
- 20:15That's that's that's the. Joint statement that shook the.
- 20:19Voluntarily, voluntarily, willfully.
- 20:23I just want to understand, like that's why we repeat this.
- 20:25I want you out. I'm not hearing this.
- 20:28But you know, my niece, going back to my niece and them,
- 20:34they're looking to build momentum from their five and
- 20:37seven campaign last year where they won three of their last
- 20:41four games. Yeah, they have the number one
- 20:43recruiting class in the Southland Conference and they're
- 20:48trying to build on a four and four league record from last
- 20:50year. You know they start their season
- 20:52with three consecutive home games against Steven of Austin,
- 20:56TX Wasteland. If I'm said that wrong, just.
- 21:02I was Wesley. I I forgot how to pronounce it.
- 21:04I think it's Wesleyan. Wesleyan, something like that in
- 21:11Tarleton State before they come to LSU on October 3rd to get
- 21:15that patient. Before my birthday.
- 21:17Yep, they'll get their check on October 4th.
- 21:22That means only thing. These games are good for besides
- 21:28unwanted injuries to me. That's like I, I just at this
- 21:32point where we are, I just don't see a benefit from US playing a
- 21:36game like this is. I really don't, man.
- 21:39If you want. To take it, you want to take a
- 21:41third by a week, take a third by a week.
- 21:43But all of this does is these in state schools, they really can't
- 21:48compete for the full 60 minute football game.
- 21:52Yeah. But they are going to compete,
- 21:55they are going to play hard because they're going to the
- 21:57flagship university, big SEC school in the state.
- 22:01So they come out ready to punch you in the mouth.
- 22:03But you get, you know, you get your top guys hurt in these type
- 22:06of games, you know, and that's all they're good for to me is
- 22:09getting a player hurt and giving a little school paycheck.
- 22:13Yeah. Is it like I'm just, I'm just
- 22:15beyond the point where this like the the small like just those
- 22:18rental wins it we're just far beyond that point.
- 22:22But that's the we got that. That's a whole another topic.
- 22:25Yeah, and you know, I did a the whole last episode on Texas, you
- 22:29know, Louisiana Tech and I think I'm titled the episode
- 22:33historically competitive because recently in recent years when we
- 22:38played them, there's only one game that has that's been over
- 22:43double digits, LSU win. The rest of them had been
- 22:47completely compact. And if I'm looking at it, you
- 22:51know, the only time I was excited that Mcnice was coming
- 22:54around was I think in 2016 or maybe after that.
- 22:59Let's see when LSU and Mcnice played in a 2000 tens, because I
- 23:03want to say it was when Khalil Thomas was playing for Mcnice.
- 23:06You know what, that's the only time I ever looked at it and was
- 23:11excited they were coming to Baton Rouge.
- 23:14Right. And that was it wasn't because
- 23:17Mcniece was coming. It was because I played football
- 23:19with Khalil. And was.
- 23:20Excited to see him, you know. Yeah, I forgot all about my God.
- 23:25Yeah, and I think that game got rained out because the weather
- 23:27was terrible. Yeah, you know that.
- 23:31Dude was that dude was a scooter daughter.
- 23:34That dude was that dude was moving brother.
- 23:37We played Denham Springs our senior year, and you can see it
- 23:40on the video, But the officials called him down.
- 23:43Yeah, it was a big old pile of just Denham Springs, the Denham
- 23:48Springs defense, OK, And he just weaseled his way through.
- 23:54And scored was so elusive and just he was just like you could
- 23:58tell man, it was too. Yeah, but you know, with that
- 24:05being said, I feel like this is a good place to end the A&M and
- 24:08Mcnice talk. Yes Sir, sounds good to me.
