- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Who models themselves in sea otter?
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: Or what do you use a sea otter's skin for?
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: They're too punishingly cute for me to do anything other than just watch them crack eggs on their belly or whatever it is that they do.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: I would stand to reason that they got a good pelt on them if they're able to survive in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Oregon.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: You know that brown uh leather portion at the bottom of a Jan Sport backpack?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: That's sea otter?
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I'm at least 13% sure that is uh sea otter.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: All right, welcome into the PW podcast right here at the Stafford Hills Club, where I do all of the podcasts, and just down the way from the saltwater pool and the amazing tennis facilities and all the workout equipment and classes you can ever need, and you cap that all off with an incredible staff.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: It's pretty big time.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Did another Hyrux class this week with the Half Rox is coming November 8th here at the club, where you can simulate what a Hyrox is, and I will report to you, Marcus, who's coming from us from Eugene, Oregon, that I'm not nearly as sore this time.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: My booty cheeks are fine, and I was actually able to walk down the stairs without doing the So maybe I'm maybe I'm getting a little better here as time goes on.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: But check it out for yourself, Staffordhills.com.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Now, Marcus, we got a lot to get to.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: We're gonna do a little bit of a football roundup, but this is not an entire episode about football.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: We've got some great Northwest stories we want to get to.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: But first things first, I know you had a big concert over the weekend at the Cooler, which is right there on MLK in Eugene down the street from the Ducks.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Had a pretty big weekend.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: You have Ducks versus Portland State Friday night into the concert on Saturday.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Real quick, tell me how was the show?
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Show was great, man.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: I I won't lie and say that we weren't a little bit worried.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Uh the manager, uh Callie, who's a friend of both of ours from way back, uh, told me on Saturday that she didn't leave that bar on Friday night until 4 a.m.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: because of how crazy the party was.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And we were concerned that maybe Eugene tied it on a little too hard on Friday night to make it out Saturday.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, but we were we were pleasantly surprised.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: We had people on the floor all night.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, Drew, we started playing at 9 15 and at 12.45 we were hearing chants of one more song.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Now, we'd played through every song that we'd learned for it, so we had to repeat a song, but we did appease the audience.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: So uh really good show all together.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Huge shout out to the cooler uh and Area 51 Tattoo out in Springfield.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: We gave away four tattoo gift certificates at that show.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Um, it was awesome.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: The crowd was great.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Uh we want to thank the guys from the band Laces Out here in town.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, they showed up and sang every song, every word, jumped around the whole time.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Awesome experience.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I thought you had a really um awesome setup on stage there.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: All the throwback gear, the mini television, the whole deal.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Uh I thought it was pretty badass.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Any shows coming up?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Are you still working on the next schedule?
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, we've got one tentatively scheduled right now, but the paperwork hasn't been signed yet.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna hold off on that one.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: But stay tuned right here to the PW podcast because we'll be plugging them here for sure.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's gonna be big.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Now, the night before, we're glad that you even showed up with any energy yourself, because of course you're at a duck game, and I know you had your show on the docket, so you probably pumped the brakes a little bit, but it's tough to do when the ducks route Portland State 84 to zero.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: No shortage of touchdowns to throw a man hug across the hall.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, so how was the game for you?
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: What did it look like from right there in the stands?
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Again, pleasantly surprised, Drew.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: You know, the students didn't even move in until the a few days after the Portland State game officially.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: So, like freshmen in the dorms.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and we're always this time of year a little nervous about what the student section's going to look like.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: And when I got there, which was still kind of right before kick, there was probably 10 or 15 rows from the top that weren't filled, but by the time the opening kickoff happened, those rows were filled up.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Uh the energy in the stadium was great.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: It was a party.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Um, of course, you've got those curmudgeons behind you that they these guys sat right behind me were talking about Dante Moore's footwork all night long, as if they uh had just quit their jobs at ESPN as as major college football analysts.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Um but I oh by and large, I will say I know we had a bad taste in our mouth as fans from that Oklahoma State game.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: I have to give the entire Oregon fan base a big pat on the back.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: I expected a little bit of low energy.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: I expected some slack faces in the crowd, and I did not see that.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: It was high fives all the way up to the seats, lots of energy, lots of noise the entire time.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Uh great experience and really the get right game that I think the Ducks needed.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Now it's one of those deals, too, where Oregon, you know, when you have the Portland State game, it's kind of like I I guess I would liken it to taking the 300 level and pulling it down to the field because it is the most cost-efficient game of the year.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: So a lot of people who can't necessarily bring the whole family to another game because it's gonna cost them a half a mortgage payment can get into this game.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: And I've always felt that the people who fight the hardest and spend their hard-earned money to be at a game are the best fans to be around.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: And so I had no doubt that it would be rip-roaring and loud in there.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And if it wasn't, shame on you, fan.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Shame on you.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Do you know how much they've given us?
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: You know how many times we've been number one or oh, just in the call.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: They just can't win it.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: We're in the playoff every year.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, be be excited, be happy.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: And so I'm really stoked about that.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Now there's a big week coming up here as the Ducks, of course, are heading down to Southern California.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, back before I had kids, it was one of my favorite things to go to was the Oregon USC game in Southern California and the beautiful weather.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: But this one kicks off at 4:30 on NBC this weekend with the Ducks favored by three, number 20 Oregon, heading to number 12 USC.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Uh, just what's your 30-second take on what's going to happen down there, Marcus?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: You know, my preseason take was Lincoln Riley ain't got it.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: He never has had it, and he won't have it as long as he stays in LA.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Um, that I'm I'm a little bit off of that, but not much, Drew, because uh I saw what happened last week against Rutgers.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, this USC team flew all the way across the country.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: That's a brutal trip, okay?
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, but the last time the Ducks made it, it was sort of a blowout.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: The game was over really before halftime, and USC needed all the time in that game to win it by seven points.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: That's a really, really overmatched Rutgers team that played against USC this last week, and I didn't think USC had it.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: They were able to pull it out.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I like our chances.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised that we're favored on the road, Drew.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: But as I said, you get a get right game like that.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Like we played against Portland State here this last week, and what happened was the starters got right, but they were only in for half.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: The team got right all the way through the entire ranks.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: We had six strings, walk-ons, guys that you've never heard of catching touchdown passes out there for the Ducks against Portland State.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: And I think that does a lot for your confidence moving forward because those guys go in this week and they practice harder because they've tasted it now.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: They know what it feels like to go out and score a touchdown in green and yellow at Odson Stadium.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: I I just I'm I'm feeling a lot better than I thought I would be right now, Drew, about this game.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it looks good.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And to all those schlubs, um, and we were talking about this a little bit before the show started, all those schlubs who want to wave their finger at the ducks for winning 84 to zero.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: You you also have to remember that a lot of those people, like Marcus just said, who came in in the second half are not starters.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Some of them aren't even second string, they're third string.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: And so what do you do when you get put into a game that you may never get to stand in front of the coach and show them what you can do between the lines again?
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: You haul ass, you whoop ass, you score touchdowns, you do everything in your power to say, see, do you see me?
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm your guy.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Don't cut me, don't go into the portal and get someone to replace me.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: I'm the next man up.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, and we know the talking heads who waved their finger, but did they care to even look who was playing at that point?
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: They probably looked at that, wrote the article thinking Dante Moore was still in the game.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I'm looking at you, Bill Lorham.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Um, that article uh was frankly, you said it was embarrassing what happened on the field on Friday night against Portland State.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I think the embarrassing thing was the article that you wrote and put in the Oregonian about that game.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: The grand total of snaps in live action for the 11 players on the field, Drew.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Total in the, I believe it was the end of the third quarter, they had 14 snaps between them as an 11-man team out there on the field.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: What are they supposed to do?
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Do you want them to go out and take a knee every single play?
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: And one part that you didn't mention that I think's really important here is these guys are trying to stay on the team, right?
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: They're trying to prove their worth.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: They're also trying to put something on tape in case they can't prove their worth at Oregon and they need to go play someplace else.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And they got great tape in that game.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: So all the people like, look, it was a you can't win game against Portland State, right?
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: If you play too good, you you score 84, you score every time you get the ball, and you only let Portland State have three plays on our side of the 50, everybody calls you a bully.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: But if you take the starters out after the first drive and let the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth string play the entire game and they score maybe 14 points, and you only beat them by 50.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Well, now you're a schlub of a team, and what's wrong with you?
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: It was a real no-win situation, but I thought that Dan Lanning did as best as you could with it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: We're gonna move on to the Beavers who got their first win of the season against Montana.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Man, I gotta tell you, Jamarcus Shepherd, their coach, that man is electric.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: He's the kind of dude that I want to be around.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: You know, like the way he's rallying with fans, and you know, you've got recruits on the sideline.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: You've got him jumping into his team after the victory and, you know, shaking his his captains.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, anything short of giving CTE to that guy.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, they were really enjoying themselves.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh a high flying performance from him, too, really putting the screws to Montana.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And you can say what you want, same thing with the Oregon and Portland State.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Maybe they were overmatched, that Montana team, but it doesn't matter.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: What you wanted to see uh from this Oregon State team that got off to a bit of a slow start was you wanted to see them come out and play like they knew they were capable of.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: And I think that's what they did.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: They came out with their hair on fire.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't get to watch the entire game, but it was a fun watch what I did get to tune in for.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: And I'll be honest with you, Drew.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: It's the first time in a long time that I'll tell you I'm kind of glad the Beavers aren't on our schedule this year as a Duck fan because uh this is a real anything can happen team right now, and uh should be fun to see him head down to uh El Paso this week and play UTEP.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the the Beavers have torn the Duck's heart out a number of times.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I I'm completely fine not playing them this year.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: I want the rivalry back.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: I just don't necessarily want it right this second.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Now, UTEP is an underdog to the Beavs.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: The Beavs got a chance to get right and go to 500 as Vegas has them favored by 10 and a half.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Do you think when we come back next week that they've uh they've sealed that deal?
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Man, with the momentum that they've got coming out of that Montana game, I would certainly hope so.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: If the if the odds makers have you at a 10 and a half point favorite here on the road, that's saying something.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: They're looking at your roster and thinking that you've got the better talent on the field.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: So let's see Oregon State execute this week and get another big win because I'm right there with you in the Jamarcus Shepherd boat.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, it's a lot like the same feelings I had about when we hired Dan Lanning.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: I don't know if there's a better guy to get for this school right now.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: And um uh it's it's great to see him.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: You know, he's paying homage to a bunch of coaches that came before him with the uh the stuff that he's wearing on the sideline.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Like he had on the shirt that just said state on it, which was a uh which was a tip of the cap to um the old Washington State Cougars coach that we all love so much.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: His name is escaping me right now.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Help me out.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Montgomery?
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: No, the big dude.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: He coached at uh Mississippi State too.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: Why am I he just passed away?
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're talking about Leach.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Mike Leach.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Mike Leach, thank you so much.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Um, and he's he's doing that every single game, Jamarcus Shepherd, is he's wearing something that pays homage to another coach.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And I think that's really cool too.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: It's like he did the guy just loves college football.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: And uh we got him in Oregon.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: It's like, thank God Oregon State's not having another Mike Riley or another Dennis Erickson run.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: This is who they needed up there in Corballis.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: I would say, I gotta say, Dennis Erickson was the best thing to ever happen to those beeves.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, Hoosh Manzada, Chad Ocho Cinco, I mean, that was a deep run.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: They were frightening.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: I'm glad he wasn't the coach anymore when he took off.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I will say also, when it comes to Shepard, he will leave.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: As soon as they're good, he's gone.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: So I apologize to you for that.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: I really like him.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: I like what you're doing over there, but you might want to find a bag of money.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Call Nibidia.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Tell him it's game time.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: It's time to uh, you know, add a little bit of zest to the pot there.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And finally, uh, before we take a break, we got to do another tip of the cap to the Northwest.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And I know this pains Marcus as a 49er fan, but the reigning Super Bowl champs look like they are for real again, even with Sam Darnold out with that hip issue.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Drew Locke.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, the guy is ice in the veins.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: His first start in a hot minute, three touchdowns, throwing bombs.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, all to the same guy, but at the same time, looked pretty good.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Now, the Niners are 2-0, my Vikings are 2-0, the Seahawks are 2-0.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Who the juggernaut is in the NFC is left to be discussed, and a lot of football in front of him.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: But you got to admit, those Seahawks are not coming out and shooting blanks.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: No, they're not.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: There was one that I it's it is definitely it falls on the DB that should have been covering Jackson Smith and Jigba, but one of those big long touchdowns that he scored, I swear to God, when Drew Locke threw that thing, it was flipping end over end, Drew.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: It was an arm punt if I've ever seen one.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, I there there is look, he's playing out of his mind for who Drew Locke is, but there's also a rather be lucky than good any day of the week aspect to this thing.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: And a couple of those throws, I think, are a little bit lucky, but hey, Seattle's got a hell of a roster.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: That defense is intimidating.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: And uh, you gotta find somebody, throw a blanket on Jackson Smith and Jigba if that's how you have to cover him.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: But for God's sakes, uh put somebody over the top because that guy's just going deep and locks hitting him all day long.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: And we will find out a little bit more Northwest flavor, even though they're traveling all the way across the country to take on the Washington Commanders.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Now that they've lost Jaden Daniels, it will be Marcus Mariota starting the game against the Seahawks, and Mariota can come out and win a game at any point.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: And normally it's his first start that it happens because they really don't have a chance to game plan on the level that they would like for him.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Um, I love when Mariota gets in.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: I love when he gets a chance to pick up a victory.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: For you Seahawks fans, I don't necessarily want it to come against you, but he's also a guy that I'd love to see starting again in this league before he hangs him up.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Now, I know that this isn't really Pacific Northwest focused here, Drew, this next comment, but could you imagine the type of career Jaden Daniels would have if he didn't have hollow bones like a bird?
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, that guy is injured all the time.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: A stiff breeze took him out last week, um, you know, just kind of falling and his whole elbow was oh God, that was gross.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Like it's ugh.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, and he hasn't been able to stay on the field the last couple of seasons.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: It's gonna it's gonna end up being the storyline of his life, kind of like a Tua, where if you it doesn't matter how good you are, if you can't strap it up, then we can't play.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: But a ton of quarterbacks were injured in the first few weeks, so it's not just him.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: We're gonna take a break.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, real quick, those commanders, underdogs by seven to the Seahawks.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: So if you feel like your your old Seahawks are gonna get the job done, it could be something to throw a little scratch on.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: We're gonna take a break, come back with some Pacific Northwest stories.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: The podcast is brought to you by Motorsport Hillsborough, where they have you dialed in.

- 18:16SPEAKER_00: He is live and local right here in the Northwest, and they will dial you in.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: And if you tell them Drew sent you 10% off your first service, and it is starting to get into those colder months, it's right there on the horizon.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: So don't forget$500 off a new water heater if you're running into that.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: I was just dealing with that recently, and Bruce and the gang are the perfect people to take care of you.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Just tell them that I sent you all the details about what they can do for you at axiompdx.com.

- 18:56SPEAKER_00: It's a sense of community around here, and they hold the door for you.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: They do all the things they want to see you at Stafford Hills.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: They have top-end tennis, a salt water pool, great workout facilities, and all the greatest classes you could imagine.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: And of course, high rocks training, the premier cutting edge stuff, and it's all happening right here at Stafford Hills.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Check out all the details on what's going down at Staffordhills.com.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: All right, we are through the football for now, even though I could talk about it for a year.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Um, but there are big stories affecting the Pacific Northwest, one of them hitting pretty close to home.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Um, a lot of people who listen to this program or know me at all know that I spend most of my coast time at Lincoln City on down through Newport.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: It's just kind of, I'm always right there.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: You know, there's such beautiful places all along the Oregon coast.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: And not to say one's better than the other, but it's just kind of my jam.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: You have a direct um association yourself.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Your wife is from Newport, Oregon.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Is that correct?
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and my parents, Drew.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: My parents were both alumni of Newport High School as well.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: And so it's kind of crazy because like one of my parents' good friends was the godfather of like one of uh or of excuse me, of my brother-in-law.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: And we didn't even know that until I had been married to my wife for like five years.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: So there's all sorts of connections that come into that small community like that.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And it shows it is just a tight-knit group there.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: You know, we the coast is funny because there are so many people that come and go, but the locals all know each other.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: And so it is very tight-knit.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: And a sad day as a plane crash went down just off the coast of Newport.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: A beechcraft B-95 went into the Pacific Ocean near Yakina Head Lighthouse on Monday.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Now, the Coast Guard conducted approximately a 12-hour search for this, covering 124 square miles.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: The 78-year-old pilot remains missing.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: The ocean is a scary place, Marcus, because you go down and and you know, the reports are also that he went down at a high rate of speed.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: High speed into an ocean, can't find any wreckage, not a great situation.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: No, and these small planes like this, I mean, they're going to absolutely explode if they hit that water at high speed.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: And you know as well as I do, Drew, the Oregon Coast waters are not for swimming.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: You can go yank a crab out of there, you can go yank a salmon out of there, but it's cold, even this time of the year.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: And a 78-year-old man, as as much as I hate to say it, um, stands no chance out there in those elements with any kind of minor injury, let alone the major injuries that might come if he survived the initial crash.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: So super sad here, but I can't say that this is um different than a lot of the U.S.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Coast Guard activity that we get out there off of Newport and Equina uh head and all of that.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: It's rugged, and people get pulled in.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: All the time.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: The king tides take them.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: They go out too far on the pier and a sneaker wave hits.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: It's tragic, but you got to be careful around the ocean.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: And if you're uh flying a plane, you got to be careful in general.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: You even look in between Lincoln City and Newport in Depot Bay there.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: If you look along the side, there's all kinds of plaques about lost uh fishermen and what happens to boats.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, things that are supposed to be out there, let alone a plane, and they're lost and gone forever.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: And to top that off, you look at there's a thing called the spouting horn right there, where the water washes up, hits that hole, and shoots up.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's shoots up so high in the sky that it's actually doused my car before and just salt watered my whole vehicle.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Mine too.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: Which is incredible.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: You're kind of like excited in the moment, then you're like, son of a butt.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: It shows how strong the water is.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: It is because that road, it's close, but it's not, and it's highway 101.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's not, it's close to the ocean, but it's not like in the ocean.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: It doesn't necessarily go over it.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I was working and I was headed south on 101, so I parked on the ocean side of the highway.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is back when I was in the cannabis industry.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: I took all my cannabis into the little dispensary right there on 101, and I walked back out on this perfectly sunny day, and my vehicle was soaked, and I had no idea what happened.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: And then as I'm walking to it, it explodes again, and then I get soaked too.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, but uh you gotta respect the ocean, man.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: They say never turn your back on it for a reason.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Like you can't mess around on the Oregon coast.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I just feel bad for this guy because he never planned on going into the water, just trying to go for a flight, and that happens.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: So uh our hearts and everything else goes out to his family as it looks like that search has come to an end.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: The investigation into a cause is ongoing.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: This is crazy, Marcus.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Um, there may be a new power source.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: You know, we've got wind, we've got um water, we've got solar that can all, you know, create power for us through, you know, different forms of generating it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Well, there's a new thing now, and it is a 750-degree set of rocks under the Newberry volcano, right here in Oregon.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: Now, do you know where the Newberry volcano is?
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a little dead center um uh of Oregon.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: It's about 20 miles south of Bend, uh, just on the eastern side of Highway 97, um, almost right in line with with Le Pine, Sun River's out there.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: It's a large stratovolcano in the Cascade Range.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, it looks kind of like all the rest of them, but uh this is interesting.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: Drew a little bit of thermo heat coming from this thing, it sounds like this thing is so hot that they're right now they're exploring three miles underground, which I thought when you get down there you start hearing the stir of echoes.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: But it is so hot that they say that they're searching for temperatures around 750 degrees.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: So that'll sear your sweet ass in a minute.
- 25:03unknown: Yeah, right.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: That's hot.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: I I mean, if they're that far down and that hot, I listen, I'm just trying to be logical here, but is this is a I mean, Google told me it was a volcano.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: And that's that kind of makes me a little bit nervous.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, we kind of live here in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: We watch Mount St.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Helens do it thing, we all or do its thing.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: We all know the story of Crater Lake.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Are they not worried about this thing blowing up?
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Well, they probably are, but it's you know, it just takes it's so rare that it happens, you know, over the course of extended amounts of time.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, we'll probably be four or five lifetimes beyond here before you see more true activity at Mount St.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Helens.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: We just happen to be here when it went down, but they're thinking that they can pull 15 megawatts of power off of this.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Now, I don't know in what you know allotment of time, but 15 megawatts of power would serve approximately 4,500 homes.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: That's a lot.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: And so the question is, is unlike solar and wind, which we gotta wait for the wind to blow, we gotta wait for the sun to shine, is this gonna be a 24-7 renewable power source?
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: And if it is, I mean, have we just tapped into something magical?
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Uh it sounds like it, Drew, because I, you know, I don't know if you're a landman fan like I am, uh, the great show on on Paramount, but uh one thing I learned about wind power from listening to old Billy Bob and Landman is that you won't offset the carbon footprint of setting up one of those huge windmills in its lifetime.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: It will take more resources to build it than it will actually provide and offset the grid.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: So this doesn't sound like something that's going to have that type of carbon footprint.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Now, I'm no scientist, I'm no geologist, I don't know how they're going to withdraw this energy.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but if it's a if it's a 24-7 renewable source that's just hiding underground and uh it's good for cooking steaks and stuff, man, I say bring it up and put it to work out there in uh in central Oregon and abroad if you if you can.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is only sitting like not very far from Sun River and Mount Bachelor.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Sun River's a small place.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: You could probably power the entire town of Sun River with just this uh hot rock in the ground.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it really is kind of the jump-off point because they're gonna take a look at this and see what it means for other volcanoes, because there's volcanoes all over the world.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: And if you could kind of find a way to target them and pull power from that source, now it is in a bit of a situation like the wind turbine because they say right now, because it's in its infancy, it's expensive.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: And so the question is, is this the future of power or is this an expensive science experiment?
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: It could be a little bit of both.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: You never know.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, maybe they learn something from it where they can apply it at a different volcano and they don't maybe have to go as deep or something like that.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: I don't really know.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: There's one person I would love to hear about his opinion on this, and it's the guy that was living on the side of Mount St.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Helens.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: I just want to know what he would think about our little project here and if he would be all for it or if he would tell them to run for hills that aren't shaped like that.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: I had three words and it was run for it.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Um, so we'll keep you posted on if anything comes of that.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: But as of now, Oregon could be cutting edge on the future of power and being able to pull from it 24-7.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: And if you think that's weird, how about this animal in Oregon that is considering a comeback, the sea otters?
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Now, a lot of people don't know this about a sea otter, but sea otters left this area nearly a century ago.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: And it's because they were hunted that fur traders would hunt and and and look for these pelts, which effectively made them become extinct in the area.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: They were that good at finding them, getting these pelts.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, maybe it was just before my time.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Who who models themselves in sea otter?
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Or what do you use a sea otter's skin for?
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: I don't know, man.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: They're too punishingly they're too punishingly cute for me to do anything other than just watch them crack eggs on their belly or whatever it is that they do.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I never been a big fur guy, but I I would stand to reason that they got a good pelt on them if they're able to survive in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Oregon.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: So it's probably pretty warm stuff.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: I think it's what they make, you know that brown uh leather portion at the bottom of a Jansport backpack?
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: That's sea otter.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty much I'm you know, I'm at least 13% sure that is uh sea otter.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm I'm a little disappointed about how bad I vandalized mine with a Sharpie then because it kind of defaced the whole, you know, uh the skin of that sea otter.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: And I didn't know.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm sorry.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: I I owe Jan Sport an apology and then the sea otters of the world an apology as well.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: I was such a lazy sack of trash that my uh Jansport was ruined by letting my school lunches rot through the bag.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Do you know do you know what a hundred-year-old banana will do to sea otter leather on the bottom of a jansport?
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: That's so that's what we need to cover ourselves with if we plan to swim in the Pacific is 10-year-old bananas.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Those we'll have new sea otter fur.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: They will eat right through it.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Actually, it just makes a gnarly brown stain.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: And when bananas go sideways and they're left to go science experiment for months on end, man.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: Dude.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: And and I always say this, Marcus, kids who had hot lunch wanted you know, lunch from home.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Kids with lunch from home wanted hot lunch.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: So I would just stare at that slice of pizza or that, you know, apple pie or bag of Cheetos that they had, and I just let that puppy rot.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: And I'd go to class with no nutrients, be like, ah, why am I having trouble concentrating?
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Look at your rotten chance board, dude.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Yep, yep.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: You know, the otters telling a big story.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: The the cold lunch kids ran the uh the lunchroom trading, though.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: I will tell you that.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: Like they had the commodities that everybody wanted to trade for.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: And I will I will break you off a cold slice of square pizza if it means I get a bag of goldfish and a cookie or something like that.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: So, you know, you just gotta see what kind of deals you can work in there, but nobody wants a spotted banana, that's for sure.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: And I will say I would uh I'd feel my lunch and I'd be like, oh, I got tradables in here.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: I'd be like, who wants to trade a Coca-Cola?
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: It's a treetop and a can.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Damn it! Who wants craynaple?
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Nobody! No one wants a crayon apple.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: And then I'd be like, oh, a sandwich.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: Someone wants a sandwich.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Boom, wheat bread with nuts in it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Son of a nothing I can do here.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I'll let it rot.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I get it.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: So the reason um that they're gone again, so in 1970 and 71, we took 93 sea otters from Alaska and dumped them in Oregon.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: And we're like, this'll be fine.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Uh no.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: Within 10 years, they were all dead and gone.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Um, the old reintroduction did fall on deaf air ears there.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: So we're kind of in a spot again, but they're in discussions of maybe bringing them back for another swing.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Let it go or bring them back?
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Again, like this is this is a lot like I felt with the whole spotted owl thing.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Like, what is the impact that we're going to have here?
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: You know, a lot of people complain about the sea lions out there in Newport on the coast.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: They're loud, they're obnoxious, there's a ton of them.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: Don't those things kind of like when you start putting sea otters back?
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Like, isn't that one of their things that they eat is sea otters?
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Am I mistaken to think that?
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Well, I do know they eat sea urchins, and sea urchins affect kelp in the uh, you know, in the ocean.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: And so the only argument against against that's opposite of the owl thing is this is a keystone species that's gone because we did it.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: You know, it's different when nature just starts to buck them off the horse and we just keep reloading and reloading.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: I just feel bad that we made all those jansport backpacks, and now we don't have any of these, you know, cute little sea otters anymore.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: So I I part of me's for bringing them back, but last time we sucked at it.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we gotta do better.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: And and please, let's not let's not trap them out of existence either, because the apple bottom jeans and boots with the fur, I also think that they're the fur from those boots, and that's out of style.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's that's early 2000s stuff.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: We don't have to bring it back, Drew, but I'm all about I mean, look, otters are some of the cutest organisms on this entire planet.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: They hold hands when they sleep, for God's sakes, to keep from floating apart.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a love letter in an animal, and if you've ever seen them at the zoo, you know, they get the little holes in the thing where they can reach out and grab food and stuff from you.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: It really is like a little seafaring raccoon, and uh I I've always loved them.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: I did have kind of a bummer of an experience.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: I drove by, uh there's like this weird pond off the freeway next to my house, and there was a dead river otter in the middle of the road, and there were no rivers anywhere near Drew.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: It's just this kind of like it it feels like a runoff pond.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, they found a car in it for a lady that had been missing for like 20 years.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: That was just a few years ago.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: So these aren't places where you would go to like recreate.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: It's like a it's a runoff pond, but there was a river otter swimming in it, and somebody hit it with the truck, and I was sad because they're cute as a bug deer, man.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Man, and it's probably the same guy who couldn't find his goats in downtown Portland.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Just like, I keep losing he's kind of like a Noah of sorts.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: His the arc has an emergency exit.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: He can't figure out how to keep latch.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: I've got no goats and only one river otter.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: How am I supposed to repopulate?
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: This blood is taking forever.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: All right, uh, that does it for us.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, we'll be back tomorrow.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Remember, every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, a brand new episode of the PNW Podcast right here with Marcus Down and Eugene and me here up in the Portland metropolitan area.
