- 0:18Impact Hello, welcome to the show today.
- 0:24Thank you for being here in this episode team, we are going to
- 0:27talk about feelings, finding clarity about how we want to
- 0:32feel in our lives because it is one of the most common things
- 0:37that I work with people in coaching around.
- 0:39It is one of the common themes is helping people get clear on
- 0:44how they want to feel in their life and then actually getting
- 0:48them to feel those feelings. And it seems like a really
- 0:51simple thing like it would be very easy for somebody to answer
- 0:55that question. How would you like to feel in
- 0:56your life? And they would able to be able
- 0:58to just answer the question straight away.
- 1:01And the reality is they can't. Most people, they don't have
- 1:05words for it. They've never really considered
- 1:07it. They don't have a lot of clarity
- 1:08on it. And then even if they do, they
- 1:11have no idea how to get there because what is happening
- 1:15currently in their circumstances often is not taking them to the
- 1:17feelings that they would like to feel.
- 1:21Achievement and reaching goals is often the backdrop to so many
- 1:24of these conversations that I have with coaching clients.
- 1:28I work with a lot of very driven, motivated, hard working
- 1:31people. Many of them own businesses.
- 1:33Many of them have worked for years to get to high positions
- 1:38in corporate settings and I'm a huge fan of that.
- 1:42I'm a believer that we as humans want to feel purposeful.
- 1:45We need to feel purposeful and that we get so much out of
- 1:49pursuing goals. We get a lot out of achievement
- 1:53and it creates things for us that are way beyond just
- 1:56material gains. It creates feelings like pride
- 1:58and confidence and self esteem, resilience, grit, and improves
- 2:03our ability to solve problems and to be critical thinkers,
- 2:07etcetera, etcetera. There's so much positive stuff
- 2:09that comes out of the pursuit of goals, the pursuit of
- 2:13achievements. I love talking about this and
- 2:16working with people on this stuff because I really feel like
- 2:18when we're connected to a work that feels bigger than us, it
- 2:21benefits us. Huge fan of that.
- 2:25However, we can also get lost in this process of pursuing the
- 2:30goals and the achievements. And this very much connects to
- 2:33this conversation around feelings.
- 2:36Our pursuit of goals, our pursuit of success.
- 2:40It can take over our lives. And what happens is oftentimes
- 2:44people will only see the lack of what they don't have when they
- 2:49are lost in that pursuit. You might have heard me talk
- 2:52about Benjamin Hardy's book, The Gap and the Gain.
- 2:55I've referenced it in past podcasts.
- 2:57But it's a book that describes how people can so easily get
- 3:00caught up in the pursuit of their achievement that they are
- 3:04constantly feeling like they're falling short in their lives.
- 3:08Their eyes are always on the horizon, on the on the prize way
- 3:12out there. And as they get closer of by
- 3:16nature, the horizon shifts. It moves.
- 3:19The goal posts are always moving and so those people, they never
- 3:23truly feel worthy or successful and they live in this constant
- 3:27state of lack and scarcity, which is a really hard place to
- 3:31be in. As opposed to the gain.
- 3:35Remember Benjamin Hardy describes the gap.
- 3:37He also describes the gain where in contrast, people will be
- 3:42working towards their achievements and their goals,
- 3:44but they will stop to celebrate their wins along the way and
- 3:47they will integrate those wins into their identity so that they
- 3:52can grow with their successes. There's a distinction there.
- 3:56And so often what I find with people is they're in the gap.
- 4:00They are in the pursuit of their achievements and their goals and
- 4:03they were, they're going hard for these things and it's great,
- 4:07except they're getting lost in them.
- 4:09And so they're only experiencing lack and scarcity.
- 4:11And so when I asked them this question, hey, how do you want
- 4:15to feel in your life? They say, God, I would, I would
- 4:18love to feel joy. I would love to feel pride.
- 4:22I would love to feel excitement. And I'll say to them, well, what
- 4:26about all this stuff that you've accomplished, all these
- 4:29achievements, all these goals that you've hit?
- 4:30Where are the feelings there? And they say they don't live
- 4:32there. I don't feel, I don't feel joy.
- 4:34I don't feel pride, I don't feel successful.
- 4:37And it's mind boggling because so many people have achieved so
- 4:42much. And by any reference, they would
- 4:45be considered a successful high performing person.
- 4:47And yet they don't see it for themselves.
- 4:51There's a disconnect there. And they get in this habit of
- 4:54saying, you know, if only I can achieve the next thing, then
- 4:58I'll feel this peace or this joy or this excitement or this
- 5:01pride, whatever it might be. If only I could just get to this
- 5:05point, then I'll feel these feelings.
- 5:08And so in my mind, the question becomes, when have you done
- 5:12enough? Like when have you done enough
- 5:15to merit feeling the feelings that you want to feel?
- 5:21When have you done enough? When have you achieved enough or
- 5:23accomplished enough or gained enough credentials or experience
- 5:28to be rewarded with the feelings that you truly want to feel?
- 5:34There's a parable that you might have heard before.
- 5:36It's been floating around for years.
- 5:38I've seen it pop up on the Internet every once in a while.
- 5:41It's called the banker and the fisherman.
- 5:44And it goes like this. There's a banker at a pier of a
- 5:48small coastal village and he sees a small boat with just one
- 5:51fisherman. And the boat is docked.
- 5:53And inside the boat, there were several large fish.
- 5:56And the banker compliments the fisherman on the quality of his
- 5:59fish. And he says, how long did it
- 6:00take you to catch them? And the fisherman replies, only
- 6:03a little while. And the banker says, why didn't
- 6:07you stay out longer and catch more fish?
- 6:11And the fisherman says, this is enough to support my family and
- 6:15and meet my needs. The banker goes on to say, but
- 6:18what do you do with the rest of your time?
- 6:21And the fisherman answers, I sleep late, I fish a little.
- 6:24I play with my kids, I spend time with my wife.
- 6:27I walk in the village each night and I sip wine and I play guitar
- 6:31with my friends. I have a full life.
- 6:33And the banker says, well, you should spend more time fishing,
- 6:37and with the proceeds you can get a bigger boat.
- 6:40And with the proceeds from the bigger boat, you can buy several
- 6:43boats. Eventually you'll have a fleet
- 6:46of fishing boats, and you would be able to control the business
- 6:50and the product. You would need to leave this
- 6:53small village and move to a bigger city where you'll run.
- 6:57You're expanding business. And the fisherman asks, how long
- 7:01will this take? And the banker says 15 to 20
- 7:04years. And then the fisherman says, But
- 7:07then what? The banker says, then when the
- 7:10time is right, you sell your business and you become very
- 7:12rich. You can make millions.
- 7:15And the fisherman says, well, then what?
- 7:18And the banker says, then you would retire and you move to a
- 7:22small fishing village where you would sleep late and you'd fish
- 7:25a little. You'd play with your kids, you
- 7:28spend time with your wife, and you walk in the village each
- 7:31night sipping wine and playing guitar with your friends.
- 7:37And there's so many. There's so many messages within
- 7:39this one parable. But it takes me back to this
- 7:42question. When have you done enough to
- 7:45merit feeling the feelings you want to feel?
- 7:48When have you achieved enough, accomplished enough, gained
- 7:52enough credentials or experience?
- 7:55When more is the subtle or not so subtle message and drive that
- 7:59motivates most people? How do you feel content and get
- 8:03access to the feelings that you want to have as a result of all
- 8:07the achievement in your life? It's knowing that you have
- 8:12access to it already. It's knowing that more is not
- 8:16the only way to feel the feelings that you truly seek.
- 8:23It's recognizing that enough is knowing when more adds nothing
- 8:28extra. And when I think about what most
- 8:32people tell me they want to feel, it comes down to a few
- 8:35common things. Peace or ease, Joy and freedom.
- 8:40Those are the big ones. Team peace, joy and freedom.
- 8:44They come up again and again. And I think about life through
- 8:47the eyes of the fisherman. Did he have those things?
- 8:50Peace, joy and freedom? He did.
- 8:53He had access to those feelings already.
- 8:55And it's a reminder to me that I have access to those feelings
- 9:01also. Yes, of course, I still have the
- 9:03goals, the dreams, the achievements that I'd like to
- 9:06make. I still have the impact that I'd
- 9:08like to have, just like so many of my clients do that I
- 9:12encourage that I love about them.
- 9:15But these feelings I want to feel are not contingent on those
- 9:19things, on those achievements, on those goals.
- 9:21I can choose to feel freedom in every single day if I want.
- 9:24I can choose to feel peace and ease within myself despite the
- 9:29fact that there might be stressful circumstances
- 9:31happening. I can choose to feel joy in a
- 9:34dozen different ways every single day.
- 9:39And that is my challenge to you this week is to ask yourself,
- 9:43what is it that you want to feel in your life and can you start
- 9:46to access that now? Don't wait to feel the feelings.
- 9:51Don't live in the gap, as Benjamin Hardy would say.
- 9:54Don't wait to allow yourself to feel what is truly important to
- 9:57you. Because this life is so precious
- 10:00and fleeting, and if you want to have the impact that you want to
- 10:04have in your world, you have to take the opportunity to live big
- 10:08and feel boldly. You are the one who?
- 10:11Gets to decide. How you want to feel in your
- 10:14life. So take advantage of that fact
- 10:16and choose to start feeling it all now.
- 10:20Don't wait, don't be stuck in the gap like so many people are
- 10:24in this life. It is a constant source of
- 10:26struggle for them and it's not something that you have to be
- 10:28in. So this week I'm going to look
- 10:31for a little bit more of the balance, the balance to the
- 10:35achievements and the goals, but also making sure that I'm
- 10:38tapping into the feelings that I want to be feeling every single
- 10:41day of my life because it's always there.
- 10:43We always have the opportunity and the honor and the privilege
- 10:47to be able to feel those things. Now, that is my challenge to you
- 10:51this week is to look at things through the eyes of the
- 10:54fishermen and see what is already available to you in your
- 10:57life right at this very moment. I hope this helps.
- 11:00I hope this spurt on some insights for you and I hope that
- 11:03you have an incredible week. Thank you for being here and
- 11:06listening and thank you for being ready to impact.
