- 0:00Dizzy from the spin, don't know what to believe? Clear the fog.
- 0:04The Morning Show with Preston Scott on News Radio one hundred point seven WFLA,
- 0:16thirty six minutes after the hour. It's the Morning Show. It's Thursday,
- 0:20August twenty fourth. Great to be with you this morning. Grant Allen running
- 0:23the program. I'm Preston Scott for the four thousand, nine hundred ninety third
- 0:28time here we are together, and I am stoked to have back on the
- 0:34program. Megan Scophil and I get to say the raining United States Golf Association
- 0:42Amateur Women's Champion. Megan, congratulations, how's that sound? Thanks so much.
- 0:50I appreciate it. Yet, It's definitely something I'm not used to yet,
- 0:54but hopefully in the next coming months it will be something I'm used to
- 0:57hearing. For those that do not know your background, your Manicello girl,
- 1:02you're a North Florida girl playing golf at Auburn University. We talked last when
- 1:07you were heading to augusta National talk a little bit about kind of that that
- 1:11stepping path of going from one type of competition to collegiate now the national amateur.
- 1:19Your game just has constantly peaked and crescendoed, and you continue to do
- 1:23that. How'd you get ready to compete in the US Amateur A lot of
- 1:29practice over the summer. I feel like when I'm home, I work a
- 1:33lot on my game and just kind of get to play a lot of golf.
- 1:38I mean, we travel a lot, we play all these different courses,
- 1:42but not just playing the same course, really figuring out your game.
- 1:45And I felt like my game was in a really good place going out to
- 1:49LA and kind of just rode that momentum a little bit, had a little
- 1:53bit of struggles in the practice round, but I felt like once I started
- 1:57stroke play, I really felt really confident with how I was playing and didn't
- 2:01hit any crazy shots and just really stay committed to my routine in my process
- 2:07that I was going through and really just honestly focused on that the whole week
- 2:12and not outcome. How different is it? The Usameter is kind of two
- 2:17tournaments. There's the stroke play, like you just talked about, and that
- 2:22qualifies you for the match play. Discuss the differences in how you attack a
- 2:27golf course or play. Yeah, so for stroke play, especially in two
- 2:32days of stroke play, I mean even part you're probably gonna make the cut.
- 2:36Especially on the USDA style course, they set it up hard to even
- 2:39part is great scores all the time, and a lot of times, like
- 2:43there's a superstition that every person you don't want to be medalists at the medalist
- 2:49always gets bumped out either like the first or second round. So it's always
- 2:52one of those things you don't you want to play good, but you don't
- 2:53want to play two good, and so you kind of just really for me,
- 2:59I just trying to shoot make a ton of pars. If I made
- 3:01a lot of pars, I knew I was going to make the cut,
- 3:04and just really focus on that. And then once you get into match play,
- 3:09then you're really playing that person. But at the same time you want
- 3:14to still try and play the golf course because I think if you get too
- 3:16wrapped up and playing that person, then you kind of just lose sight of
- 3:21like, Okay, if I just make pars and beat her with my score,
- 3:23then I'm going to be the winner at the end of the match.
- 3:25But it is tough like to switch that mindset and just know that like if
- 3:30you if y'all both have a great day, it's like you could have beaten
- 3:34anyone else, but y'all both are playing amazing golf. So now one of
- 3:37a like a really good player is going to get beat out. It's tough,
- 3:40but I mean, I personally think my mindset changes maybe a little,
- 3:44but not a crazy amount. Honestly, this is The Morning Show with Preston
- 3:49Scott, one of my favorite subjects in the world to talk about golf,
- 3:54played that since nineteen sixty five, love the game and to have with us.
- 4:00Meghan Scofield, Megan, if I go through the list of names that
- 4:03are sitting on that trophy, you know you've got names like Julie Inkster,
- 4:10more recent names Megan, Morgan Pressel, You've got you've got some of the
- 4:14Hall of Fame names of Joanne Carner and of course Louise Suggs and then Babe
- 4:19Diedrichson, Zaharius. What do you think about the fact your name now is
- 4:25on that trophy forever? Yeah, it definitely is something I feel like every
- 4:32amateur golfers like Durst and four like that's what you want to do. You
- 4:36want to make make history. And so whenever it was all of a sudden
- 4:43downe, I was just like I still couldn't believe it. I was like,
- 4:45I'm always going to be the US Women's Amateur Champion, Like people are
- 4:47always going to see that when they get the trophy every single year, like
- 4:51it's always gonna be around. It's it's such an honor, honestly, just
- 4:55to have my name with all those other grades that you just listed. What's
- 5:00next? Are Is there going to be an effort to repeat this title or
- 5:04is professional golf calling first? Yeah, so I'm gonna I'm gonna do my
- 5:10fifth year at Auburn, so I'm actually back at school, Gonna remain amateur
- 5:15for the rest of this year Duke Q School in the fall of twenty twenty
- 5:20four. I haven't decided if I'm going to go back and play the US
- 5:25Women's Amateur because the British Open and those kind of overlay. So I'm I'm
- 5:30gonna play the British Open for sure, so I'll just see if it fits
- 5:32into my schedule. But I'm really in no rush to turn pro. I
- 5:36definitely I'm going to enjoy my last year at Auburn and just really soak up
- 5:42all the time I have left here. What's been the coolest I don't know
- 5:47sort of perk of having won that title. You I didn't say the coolest
- 5:55thing is I'm getting into the British Open. Is that the old course of
- 5:58Saint Andrews. Oh Man. Yeah, that'll be a really neat experience because
- 6:02like my parents, my sister, a bunch of my like family and friends
- 6:05are going to come over and so that'll just be like I mean, I
- 6:09don't know how many British Opens I'm gonna play it, but to play my
- 6:12first one at Dan Andrews will be something hard to top. So how early
- 6:15do you go over to get used to playing links golf and playing that course
- 6:20or do you find the closest simulator and spend like four hours on a simulator?
- 6:27Yeah, I'm well, I'm lucky. One of my teammates I'm really
- 6:30good friends, but she lived in outside Dublin, and so my plan is
- 6:33to try and go over a little bit early and go play some courses in
- 6:36Dublin, just get used to the golf there and then head over to Scotland.
- 6:42Ah, life is good when you are a us GA champion. Megan.
- 6:48Yeah, I'm just go back for just a second to the golf course
- 6:53itself. You played it at a historic location. You won your tournament title
- 6:57at bel Air. When you first arrived there, what did you determine was
- 7:02the best way for you to learn about that golf course and get inside the
- 7:05head of the architect to beat it. I mean, honestly, I felt
- 7:12like the course was kind of right in front of you. The hardest thing
- 7:14for me was to get used to is how firm the greens were, and
- 7:17just really getting used to how much they were releasing, how much they were
- 7:21rolling out. C J and I we talked a lot to the superintendent that
- 7:27week, just kind of about the golf course, what they're trying to do.
- 7:29We're always kind of fascinated by those things, so he just always was
- 7:31talking to us, just telling us, like what they like to do their
- 7:35course, that kind of thing. But yeah, no, I mean that
- 7:39golf course was just unbelievable. It's just kind of one of those things that
- 7:43I really loved the course and the layout of it. I just loved how
- 7:45it looked and just was my week, you know, like I felt really
- 7:49confident and comfortable on that course. Well, I couldn't be happier for you.
- 7:54I watched every single hole that they televised of you playing just because we
- 8:00were fortunate to have you on the show a few years ago and was pulling
- 8:03for you to play well, and well you did. Congratulations, Megan,
- 8:07really thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Thanks for the time
- 8:09today. Megan scophil with us this morning on the Morning Show with Preston Scott.
- 8:15And it's not often you say that someone from your area is a USGA
- 8:20national champion. In her case, she is the United States Women's Amateur golf
- 8:24champion for twenty twenty three. And what an amazing accomplishment, really just amazing,
- 8:30And if you were a golfer and you watched any of it, she
- 8:33didn't back her way into it. She played terrific golf all week long.
- 8:39In fact, she talked about the higher seeds getting knocked out. She was
- 8:43the highest remaining seed. I think she finished sixth or seventh and in the
- 8:48metalist standing, so she played well in stroke play, but she was the
- 8:54seventh seed if I remember correctly, and survived at all, survived all the
- 8:58carnage and one four and three, which is a very comfortable win in the
- 9:03finals. So great to have around the program here in the Morning Show with
- 9:07Preston Scott,
