- 0:03Who's got it better than that? No way! Robert
- 0:06is being chased, thrown on the lawn, and it is
- 0:10caught! Touchdown! Keenan Allen! What a great
- 0:13goal! My goal is not to break, my goal is to
- 0:15make you harder to break. Number six! Number
- 0:19six! Grab your lunchboxes and go attack this
- 0:37game with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind! Three
- 0:46in 14 Cardinals, they said. Justin Herbert's
- 0:49an MVP candidate, they said. Chris O 'Leary's
- 0:53a bright defensive mind, they said. Well, they're
- 0:56all liars! They never told us Mike Le Fleur is
- 1:01the next Sean McVay, Jack. And they never told
- 1:03us that Trey McBride is a future NFL Hall of
- 1:06Famer. Well, maybe, maybe you did, Jack. Welcome
- 1:09to the Thunderdown Under Chargers podcast, everybody.
- 1:13Don't have Andy this week. He's away on an overseas
- 1:15holiday with his family. Have a great time, mate.
- 1:18I hope you're listening to this at the buffet,
- 1:20breakfast or at the pool. It's just Jack and
- 1:23I. and we're going to work our way through our
- 1:25Feelings TDU crew. Before we do, hit like and
- 1:29subscribe. We're into another season. But Jack,
- 1:32not the start we wanted. Is it the worst loss
- 1:34of the Jim Harbour era? Oh, man. I was maybe
- 1:41thinking that I should put some of the audio
- 1:43that I sent in our offline chat. when unceremoniously
- 1:47the scores got revealed on my phone through a
- 1:51notification that I thought I turned off. But
- 1:54no, I'm sitting in my car after, you know, waiting
- 1:57to turn out of the car park at work and I've
- 2:00just exploded. I've exploded on the group chat
- 2:04and I can't share that. I can't even put it on
- 2:07people's ears. But yeah, I'm really disappointed.
- 2:11And yes, I would say. Listen, I think the game
- 2:15against the Patriots and it was probably the
- 2:18worst game, the worst loss that I can remember
- 2:21purely because we made the playoffs. We had a
- 2:23pretty good season and we laid an egg, but the
- 2:26context here does make, does put this up there
- 2:28with one of the worst losses of Harbaugh's career.
- 2:31I, you know, what can you control? You can control
- 2:34the controllables. You can control how you prepare.
- 2:37And before we get into it, I just felt the whole
- 2:40game. We just weren't ready. We just didn't look
- 2:44ready across all three phases. Some better than
- 2:48others, which we'll get into, but I am extremely
- 2:51disappointed. And gosh, this game against the
- 2:54Raiders, which we'll get into on our other show,
- 2:56is just so much more important than it was a
- 2:59week ago. Certainly is. I mean, per ESPN, a Harbour
- 3:04led Chargers team have never lost a game in which
- 3:06they were plus six. point favorites in terms
- 3:10of the line from six games. So this was a surprise.
- 3:13The betting markets favored the team by more
- 3:15than a score. As you said, one game was sharp.
- 3:19So one team was sharp on all sides of the ball.
- 3:22The other was an ish. And the question is, is
- 3:27this, is this a preparation issue? Do you think
- 3:31they should have, I mean, Harbaugh now says should
- 3:33the starters have played more in the preseason?
- 3:36Um, should we have trained differently? What
- 3:39do you think about that? Without being in the
- 3:44building, it's impossible to say. And all you
- 3:46can do is speculate, but clearly you don't really
- 3:50come out in the media. I wouldn't anyway. And
- 3:52then perhaps question my preparation and say,
- 3:55well, maybe we should have played the starters
- 3:56a little more if I wasn't actually being a little
- 3:59bit truthful. social media has gone into overdrive
- 4:03and the amount of Herbert's slander, perhaps
- 4:06something a little bit coming from our own, you
- 4:09know, TDU film today, Alistair, the TDU, the
- 4:12slander of Justin Herbert. But yeah, and Charlie
- 4:18Cola's press conference after the game, I think
- 4:21was actually really refreshing to hear a very
- 4:24erudite and smart guy just said it wasn't good
- 4:26enough. And you could see that he was clearly
- 4:28annoyed. I mean, the guy didn't have a stat.
- 4:31The guy didn't catch the ball. The guy, you know,
- 4:34Oh, my hardly did anything. He did a bit of blocking.
- 4:37But yeah, trouble. This is trouble. I'm deeply
- 4:41troubled about a couple of things that I'm sure
- 4:43we'll get into in a second. Yeah. Why do we start
- 4:47the game? Usually we go in all sorts of different
- 4:49directions, but since the game started with two
- 4:52touchdown drives Let's start there and let's
- 4:55start the way the game did Chris O 'Leary in
- 4:57his first NFL game as a defensive coordinator
- 5:00the 34 year old comes out and What do the Cardinals
- 5:04do Jack they just slowly? matriculate the ball
- 5:07down the field an 11 play six minutes and 11
- 5:10second touchdown drive from the very first snap
- 5:14of the game 27 yard completion to Trey McBride
- 5:17split safety with a late cover three rotation,
- 5:20leaving that same wide open the Cardinals attacked
- 5:23it. What were your impressions on on that first
- 5:26drive on the rewatch? What were you thinking
- 5:28and seeing out there? I like defense. So you
- 5:33mean the Arizona Cardinals first, first drive?
- 5:35Yeah, our defense. Yeah. Again, it just looked
- 5:40very underwhelming. It's really hard because
- 5:45I was trying to recollect in my mind what Minters
- 5:49defense was. And arguably, you could almost say
- 5:53that Minters defense was, was underwhelming to,
- 5:56to a point it, it wasn't a particularly splashy
- 5:59defense. You know, the, the pass rush did its
- 6:02job. It was just the, obviously the pattern match
- 6:05and the coverage, the guys just knew exactly
- 6:07what to do. But I have never seen the middle
- 6:11of the field more open in a Chargers defense
- 6:14since possibly the days of Brandon Staley. Jacoby
- 6:18Brissette just picked it apart. He picked the
- 6:21absolute donkey ass out of it. And the one thing
- 6:25that we did say on our preview show is to stop
- 6:28Trey McBride, right? But the guy has nine catches
- 6:31for 100 yards and one touchdown. And arguably,
- 6:36Derwin James throughout the game. Yes, the yards
- 6:39don't look a lot. I think it was five catches
- 6:4127 yards for one touchdown But he was there all
- 6:45day Trey McBride and he was getting open and
- 6:48open and that you know led born to being open
- 6:51Wilson gets open, you know because We were obviously
- 6:55blitzing. I don't know. What was the blitz rate?
- 6:57Alistair? What did you see? What did you see
- 7:00and why was the middle of the field? So open
- 7:02the way it was and so early it was just and it
- 7:05didn't didn't stop up nothing changed which is
- 7:09a bit worrying i'm what i thought was more worrying
- 7:12is i thought things did change and why i'm concerned
- 7:16at least later in the game at least later in
- 7:19the game it just it felt to me like the cardinals
- 7:23just had a very clear read on what o 'leary's
- 7:26tendencies would be in particular whenever whenever
- 7:30it was a a longer down and distance Chris O 'Leary
- 7:34likes getting aggressive. He likes sending a
- 7:36minimum of five sometimes six. We even saw seven
- 7:39once and I think Michael Fleur I mean and Brissette
- 7:44between the two of them. They were masterful.
- 7:46They were One when the when we were playing either
- 7:50Phi zones or or zone coverages generally they
- 7:54knew who to read they knew Which overhang defender
- 7:57to read or if it was the late rotating safety
- 8:00where where? to read, to give away a tell. And
- 8:04as soon as they did, they just hit over the behind
- 8:05that dropping defender into the vacant soft spot
- 8:09underneath. Conversely, they took their calculated
- 8:13shots whenever the the charges did blitz and
- 8:16play man coverage behind it. And to answer your
- 8:19question, it was about 33 % of the time Chris
- 8:23O 'Leary blitzed, but the first half would have
- 8:26been much, much higher because later in the game,
- 8:28he gave up on it. But whenever we came hard on
- 8:31the blitz and decided to play man coverage down
- 8:33the back end, I just don't know if the Chargers
- 8:36have the cornerbacks who can really play that
- 8:39style consistently. And you saw one example where
- 8:42the Cardinals don't have a shortage of weapons,
- 8:44as we discussed on our show last week, and Brissette,
- 8:48on one of them, bite at his time, saw Marvin
- 8:50Harrison Jr. up the left sideline, and it was
- 8:52that 33 -yard completion to Cam Hutt. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:56So it was a bit, what I was concerned about is
- 8:59to me, it didn't really matter what we were doing.
- 9:01It was either we're playing zone coverage and
- 9:03suddenly they knew where to pick apart these
- 9:05different holes in the underneath because maybe
- 9:07we don't have the world's best linebackers to
- 9:09be completely honest, or it's tight man coverage.
- 9:12And then they said, you know what? Michael Wilson's
- 9:14a really good player and so is Tray McBride and
- 9:16so is Marv Harrison Jr. Try stop us in man coverage.
- 9:20Is Marvin Harrison Jr. a good player? Come on,
- 9:23trust the charges to give Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 9:26the guy with bricks for hands in preseason, a
- 9:29get right game. Yep. My Lord. So is this, are
- 9:33we now questioning this continuity? Because in
- 9:38the preseason, most fans were going, Oh, you
- 9:40know, it's great. O 'Leary worked under Minter,
- 9:44Minters left, you know, O 'Leary went, was a
- 9:46play caller. Now he's come back. It's not going
- 9:48to be that different. It really did feel different.
- 9:50And if you're saying that you saw a little bit
- 9:52of essentially, we're not good enough in the
- 9:56cornerback room. And that was one of the rooms
- 9:57we did kind of pick out in our preseason shows
- 10:00that was relatively thin. And Minter was making
- 10:03was making gold with pretty much lead, especially
- 10:07those later fourth and fifth round cornerbacks,
- 10:10because he kind of knew what he had all of a
- 10:12sudden, O 'Leary's asking these guys to do something
- 10:14different. And they're really, really struggling.
- 10:17It might not be part of their, you know, their
- 10:20DNA. I mean, listen, it's one game in, right?
- 10:23So I think now though, they've got to be serious
- 10:26questions over the actual continuity between
- 10:28O 'Leary and Minter and whether actually they're
- 10:32quite different in what they want to do. What
- 10:34say you to that? Did you say after watching a
- 10:36lot of Minter last year in the last couple of
- 10:38years, do you reckon O 'Leary is actually quite
- 10:40different to him? At least in the first game
- 10:43he was and to really simplify it. I mean, you'll
- 10:47still see some of the same quarters structure
- 10:49from time to time. There are elements of the
- 10:51Minta defense in what O 'Leary is doing. But
- 10:53to oversimplify things, O 'Leary seems like he's
- 10:57a defensive coordinator who is going to do a
- 10:59better job at stopping the run. You're going
- 11:01to deal with more explosive passes. And Minta
- 11:03was the opposite. He said, you're not going to
- 11:06see explosive passes. You're going to see really
- 11:07tight coverage on the back end and we'll rally
- 11:10to tackle because we're going to force you to
- 11:11throw underneath. But from time to time, you
- 11:14may get frustrated against a team like the Colts
- 11:16or the Jags or a good power running team, because
- 11:19we're a bit light in the box. So I think you've
- 11:22got to decide which you get more frustrated by
- 11:25as a fan. And my view has always been in the
- 11:28modern NFL, you notice it when you can't defend
- 11:31the pass a lot more than when you can't defend
- 11:33the run. And in this game, because of the gash
- 11:35plays. Yeah, yeah, they just it's just too easy
- 11:38to move the ball up and down the field. And in
- 11:40this game, if you just Look at it. I think we
- 11:43kept the Cardinals to under four yards a carry
- 11:45for the, by the end of the game. Guys up front
- 11:48played relatively well against the run. I thought
- 11:50Tartt and Cordwell and Tomlinson. Interior was
- 11:54really good. I thought, yep. They were really
- 11:56active, but, but geez, Jack, how many times did
- 11:59you just say easy completions over the middle
- 12:01of the field? 10, 15 yards. And let's be honest,
- 12:05the pass rush was impotent. It was impotent,
- 12:11and really disappointingly so. But, you know,
- 12:14Tully didn't look amazing. Mack didn't look great
- 12:18either. Mesodore was on there for a little bit,
- 12:21but we just weren't getting pressure on him.
- 12:23And, you know, going into the game that Brissette
- 12:26is a veteran, right? The guy actually played
- 12:29relatively well in a pretty poor team. And we
- 12:31picked that out a week ago and said, dude, he's
- 12:33quite fantastically. Well, I can't even tell
- 12:36you too bad. You couldn't play it like an elite
- 12:39NFL quarterback would not have played better
- 12:41than reset did really in that game. He's gone
- 12:43to 75%. Didn't make a single error. And he had
- 12:47the answers to the test. He just knew what was
- 12:49going to happen. Although it does help when you're
- 12:52only under pressure on 25 % of your drop backs,
- 12:56just. Correcting signs, man. Correct. I must
- 12:59admit to sort of have a positive where you did
- 13:02touch on it, but I thought the interior of the,
- 13:03the, the defensive line, you're right. Whenever
- 13:06I saw love try to bust one out, I really felt
- 13:09that there were quite a lot of bodies there that
- 13:11they'd read it relatively well. Uh, but the,
- 13:15the edges, man, just, you got, we got to get
- 13:17more, we got to get more pressure on there. Like
- 13:20we've got to be asking Tully and Mac and Meza.
- 13:22You've got to do better. I'm sorry. I know that
- 13:25they were great last year and we don't want to
- 13:27criticize Khalil Mack too much, but that that
- 13:29just can't be happening. And if O 'Leary knows
- 13:33that maybe he's not going to get a lot of pressure
- 13:35out of his edge room. And so we sending Diane
- 13:37Henley and he's blitzing linebackers and we get
- 13:40pulled apart like that because what I'm just
- 13:43looking at our the coverage grades from PFF.
- 13:47I think Tony Jefferson had a great game. Genesis
- 13:50Smith looked really good too, deep. And Elijah
- 13:53Maldon played quite well too. But Cam Hart, Dermot
- 13:57James, Henley, Dante Jackson, they're sort of
- 14:01hovering around 60 PFF grade and below, and their
- 14:04coverage grades aren't much better either. Cam
- 14:07Hart especially had a... Yeah, a rough, rough
- 14:11game, um, allowing 70 yards for five catches
- 14:14on six targets. That's, that's Le Fleur going,
- 14:17I'm going to wipe Le Fleur with you, Le Cam,
- 14:21sucked in. It wasn't intense on the sideline,
- 14:26Jack. Oh yeah. He was there. I think we talked
- 14:30offline about it, but there was some, I think,
- 14:32was it a flag or something? And he was just going
- 14:34down the sideline and he was going, shut the
- 14:36F up. shut the F up to, to whatever charges players
- 14:40was in earshot. I love that. I actually love
- 14:43that. That's also quite likable. Maybe you won't
- 14:46be, they kept shooting to his mom and dad watching
- 14:48in the stands. And I thought this would be such
- 14:50a great moment from for their family. Terrible
- 14:53for me and mine. I haven't spoken to my wife
- 14:55or daughter for three days, but, but for the
- 14:59Leclerc family, quite a good one. I was going
- 15:02to say on your point, Jack, if I was If I was
- 15:06Chris O 'Leary right now, other than thinking
- 15:08about flying to Western Michigan, I would be
- 15:12thinking, what do I do here? Because I don't
- 15:19know if I've got the players who are skillful
- 15:26enough to blitz really aggressively all the corners
- 15:29to cover. I'm worried that my pattern match style
- 15:32of defense the soft spots are predictable the
- 15:36tapes out there it's known so maybe we actually
- 15:39need to simplify simplify instead of rotating
- 15:43from two to one pre and post snap and one to
- 15:46two and inverted cover two maybe we dumb it right
- 15:49down and play some more true zone coverage but
- 15:52then if you're doing that You can really only
- 15:55do that if you've got a pass rush, because otherwise
- 15:58it's even easier for the quarterback. And we've
- 16:01got Tully who seems underdone. There are a couple
- 16:05of reps where he failed to set the edge. The
- 16:08Jeremiah Love touchdown and the Jeremiah Love
- 16:1018 yard run were both Tully getting a little
- 16:13bit inside and not realizing he should set outside
- 16:15in. Mezador had some of the bad out of hell playing
- 16:19style I marked down as a question mark. Off his
- 16:23college tape. He played with a lot of effort,
- 16:25but I thought He liked a bit of technical refinement
- 16:28and it will come with time Khalil Mack occasionally
- 16:31bull rushed but he's not getting any younger.
- 16:35So Yeah, I had some long sleepless nights for
- 16:38Chris O 'Leary not only trying to find the positives
- 16:42in this game, Jack. And I agree the decision
- 16:44to start Genesis Smith over RJ Mickens was one
- 16:46of those. I thought that was a good decision
- 16:49to get the undying in there with a higher upside.
- 16:51But then other than some of these defensive tackles,
- 16:54it was as you said it perfectly. It was as bad
- 16:58as the Brandon Staley era and looked nothing
- 17:00like the Jesse Minter defense. Yeah. And in response
- 17:06to you saying, do you just simplify it? That's
- 17:10not a great message to send to your team after
- 17:12one week really, is it? And are we, are we, are
- 17:17we blowing this out of proportion? Let's, let's
- 17:20just on defensively. Are we, we, we, we had them
- 17:2314, 16, we're around the mark and there was some
- 17:26unlucky things. The charge is charging and listen,
- 17:28they only put up 23 points. Some defenses allowed
- 17:3150 plus points on the weekend. So I got a short
- 17:35field because of a blocked punt from JK Scott.
- 17:38they did. So we might be sort of, you know, taking
- 17:42the foundation, you know, under the house and
- 17:44then the whole thing collapsed before we've actually
- 17:46sort of figured out what's in the house, you
- 17:49know, before, and maybe make some better decisions,
- 17:54but it's not a carpenter just for the listeners.
- 17:56Definitely not. I try to be sometimes. I just
- 17:59let you go there. Yes. You're a man of many skills,
- 18:02a real polymath. But, but yeah, what And the
- 18:06other thing that I did want to bring up Alistair
- 18:08is, you know that Trey McBride, everyone knew
- 18:11where the ball was going. And time and time and
- 18:14again, we could rely on the highest paid member
- 18:17of the defence, the leader of the defence to
- 18:19go and stick in the slot, whether it's Travis
- 18:21Kelsey, whether it's whoever's is and go, hey,
- 18:24win this match up for us. We just need you take
- 18:26that away. They don't have much else. However,
- 18:30Le Fleur schemed it really well. I saw McBride
- 18:33in motion a lot of the times, putting pressure
- 18:35on the, on the backend coverage, who's going
- 18:37what, especially with a first time coordinator.
- 18:39Um, and yes, when you actually look at the stats,
- 18:42you know, when Derwin was on him, he only allowed
- 18:4557 yards, sorry, 27 yards on five catches, but
- 18:48it was just that rhythm, that rhythm, that rolling.
- 18:52And Derwin is an incredible player. I'm sure
- 18:55he was going to bounce back really well, but
- 18:56we move on to the Raiders who, who knows if Brock
- 18:58Bowers and Michael Mayer are playing, but Michael
- 19:02Mayer looked okay. And at the moment, the spam
- 19:05button on the PlayStation is over the middle
- 19:08tight end, over the middle tight end, over the
- 19:10middle tight end, then an out route because O
- 19:12'Leary's defense couldn't hack it. I felt for
- 19:15Derwin a bit though, because like a couple of
- 19:18those plays was just, Derwin's right there. He's
- 19:21in coverage. He's got body contact. Trey McBride's
- 19:24just better than you. Or he's maybe I'll say
- 19:26bigger and stronger. Ultimately, there is a size
- 19:29disadvantage when you've got a tight end on a
- 19:31safety. Derwin's unique that he can even do it,
- 19:33right? So that red zone touchdown was just a
- 19:36little bit of shimmy shake and then run out and
- 19:38he just had it and showed Derwin the ball and
- 19:41flipped it to the ref. And then that one out
- 19:43by the sideline. Same deal. Derwin was trying.
- 19:46Derwin even had a couple of moments, but McBride
- 19:49definitely Took home the chocolates in that matchup.
- 19:53Best tight end in the NFL by far. I absolutely
- 19:58love the guy. Yeah. He's so good. He's so, so
- 20:01good. Anyway, what are you going to say? So I
- 20:06think it's, it's good perspective from you to
- 20:09just take the step back, say it's week one, first
- 20:14time coordinator, new schemes. We will get to
- 20:17the offense very shortly. And I should remind
- 20:21myself of that perspective, because last year,
- 20:24in week one, the Seahawks and the Patriots both
- 20:26lost at home. Yeah, eventual Super Bowl contenders.
- 20:31So week one does turn up these odd results. Maybe
- 20:34part of it is a function of starters not playing
- 20:37as much in the preseason. But nevertheless, a
- 20:40lot of work to do. for the defense. Let us know
- 20:43what you think in the comments. Are you more
- 20:44optimistic than us or are you deeply, deeply
- 20:47concerned? I'm leaning more towards the ladder.
- 20:49Jack's maybe a bit more glass half full, but
- 20:52we'll find it next week. Yeah. There was some
- 20:56things there that, that worried me, but you just
- 21:00never know. You just never know. A week is a
- 21:01long time in football. And as Charlie Cole, I
- 21:03said, you're not a human being if you're not
- 21:05motivated by a loss like that. So let's leave
- 21:08it. Let's leave the defense there. All right.
- 21:11Onto the offense. Where do you want to start?
- 21:13Let's start with the, let's start with the first
- 21:15drive again, like we did on, on defense. Yeah.
- 21:20It was, I mean, you know, it looked good. I was
- 21:24excited. I was rolling around. I was going, okay,
- 21:26we've given up a touchdown. Ooh, but okay, now
- 21:29we can go here. Couple of big, um, couple, couple
- 21:32of big gashes, gushing runs. Hampton was running
- 21:35angry. Um, you know, Herbert looked in control.
- 21:39Uh, there was a bit of play action. You know,
- 21:41there was some sort of, I mean, lad McConkey
- 21:43looked elite and we'll talk about what happened
- 21:46to him later, but you know, we go down and score
- 21:49and you go, okay, we're back in this pretty happy.
- 21:52What about you? Yeah, Andy and I, and for the
- 21:55listeners, Andy and I got away to the country
- 21:57for a night away to watch that game. Very romantic,
- 22:00except ruined a good date the way the Chargers
- 22:03played. But the first, hopefully most Chargers
- 22:06fans for the first drive and the second drive,
- 22:08we're watching this offense thinking, I've never
- 22:10seen a Chargers offense do this stuff for 10
- 22:12or 15 years. Everyone is wide open, especially
- 22:16off play action. McDaniel was just walking around
- 22:19with confidence, talking into his play sheet,
- 22:22you know, 15 yards here, explosive pass to McConkie
- 22:26there, three in a row to McConkie, that were
- 22:28just these 20 yard chucks. And then you'd see
- 22:31the ball go to Gadsden and flip it to him for
- 22:3325 yards. And then it'll go to David Najoku.
- 22:37The question though is what actually happened?
- 22:41And I don't want to talk about the quarterback
- 22:44yet. I do think I do think is we'll get there.
- 22:48We'll get their listeners. I do think there's
- 22:51an element of of be confident in this offense
- 22:55that they're going to get there because we have
- 22:58an unlucky a Marion Hampton fumble. We have a
- 23:02failed fourth down attempt. You know, this is
- 23:05a game of margins, right? All of these things
- 23:07equal points left on the board. You know, on
- 23:10the defense, there was a missed interception
- 23:12opportunity. We didn't even talk about that.
- 23:14So so There are these fine margins in the game
- 23:17and that's kind of just got a little bit more
- 23:20momentum going for the Cardinals because we couldn't
- 23:23stop them on defense and they had these really
- 23:25long drives offensively. I feel like we lost
- 23:29our mojo a little bit as a whole, don't you?
- 23:33Especially at the wide receiver position after
- 23:35McConkie went down, things got grim. Yeah, again,
- 23:40I would really hope That we had built something
- 23:43a little bit more substantial to when things
- 23:46go wrong that were a little bit more resilient.
- 23:50The team last year definitely was I definitely
- 23:53felt like it had a lot of resiliency to it when
- 23:57you know the a play like Hampton running into
- 24:00Trey Harrison you know reliving the butt fumble
- 24:03happens we were able to sort of get over that.
- 24:06But again, you know, I sometimes think and I'm
- 24:08not giving the charges excuses here, by the way,
- 24:11but after I got over my emotional sort of outbursts
- 24:15and state, I start going, well, a lot of these
- 24:18guys are brand new, especially on the offense
- 24:20as well. A lot of these guys are playing new
- 24:23roles. You know, they're they're not battle tested,
- 24:26perhaps as much brand new coordinator too. So
- 24:29I think that all goes into it when we get into
- 24:32these really tight spots. But the I have to talk
- 24:38about this now, Alistair, if we're talking about
- 24:40the offense. I am going to be bold and say it
- 24:46is a overarching organisational utter failure.
- 24:52About what's happening at right guard and left
- 24:54guard at the moment, it is it is astonishing.
- 25:00That. We can have a guy that we didn't even talk
- 25:03about in the preseason of maybe maybe does he
- 25:06deserve the right guard? That is the worst game
- 25:10I have seen from a Chargers that is from a Chargers
- 25:13player on the offensive line since and you know,
- 25:16you know how I'm going to say Alistair, you know
- 25:18who I'm going to say. You want me to say it.
- 25:21Senor Calamity. Colestrange was abhorrent. I'm
- 25:27sorry, Colestrange, if you listen to this bit.
- 25:29PFF graded him as a 10 .6 man, a chair's doing
- 25:34better out there than you. And the times when
- 25:38he let up a pressure ended up being pretty, pretty
- 25:42terrible. And this platooning of the left guard
- 25:45when Coyote Awosika is actually having a really
- 25:48good game and you put in Trey Pipkins on the
- 25:51fourth down and he does what he does. I, I just
- 25:56can't see how disgusting. It's awful. If Trey
- 26:04Pipkin sees the field again in this hole rotating
- 26:07through left guard, I'm going to vomit. Cole
- 26:10Strange, you've got another three games before
- 26:12I'm really going to start going for you, because
- 26:16that's just not good enough. You've come in,
- 26:18you're meant to have an understanding of Mike
- 26:21McDaniel's scheme. But 10 .6 buddy. And that
- 26:24we looked at some of this, some of the game type
- 26:26in an offline chat again. And they're bad, man.
- 26:29They are bad, bad, bad reps. Yep. Granted slaughter
- 26:34looked okay. And the two tackles, you know, I
- 26:37just, you know, did my Hail Mary's 27 times that
- 26:40they got, they both got through the game. Okay.
- 26:42And they looked pretty good too. Yep. How can
- 26:46we be in week not in week one halfway through
- 26:49the game in week one? We're going back to hey
- 26:52the left guard position looks crap. Hey, the
- 26:53right guard position looks crap I wonder do we
- 26:56have a offseason where maybe we're gonna try
- 26:58and fix that Ah Alistair it this really this
- 27:02is the lowest point in the podcast for me It's
- 27:05it's it's probably lower than the defense because
- 27:07I am just so disappointed so so so disappointed
- 27:10Yeah, I don't want to see a sequel to platoon
- 27:12So no, no platoon two. I don't know if Willem
- 27:15Dafoe is available. Uh, Charlie Sheen certainly
- 27:18isn't, although he might've been playing right
- 27:19guard based on how Colstrange went. Um, but over
- 27:26overall. I do think there's a lot to be said
- 27:30for how good it was to have Slater and Ault back.
- 27:34I don't think Jake Slaughter's getting enough
- 27:35credit for his first game, and that's because
- 27:37people see that he has x -rayed. And yes, he
- 27:40had a few. He had a handful of reps in the running
- 27:43game where, okay, maybe he got slightly overpowered.
- 27:46They had some really good defensive interior
- 27:48players. Roy Lopez kicked the ass of our inside
- 27:52defensive linemen. So did Collier. Walter Nolan,
- 27:55not as much, but Slaughter... First game, this
- 27:58guy's first ever game of NFL football. A lot
- 28:02of pressure. A lot of pressure. And there weren't
- 28:03these, you know, egregious issues with him being
- 28:06walked back into the quarterback's lap or, or
- 28:09guys coming through the A -gaps. Cold, strange,
- 28:11different story four or five times. But I don't,
- 28:14I don't look at this game and think to myself,
- 28:17oh, we've got such a problem, man, our interior
- 28:19offensive line, it's going to be a really big
- 28:21problem. I don't think that dude, because Justin
- 28:24Herbert barely got pressured in the first half.
- 28:27McDaniel with how often we were running play
- 28:29action or using different motions. He can do
- 28:34so much schematically. He really can do so much
- 28:39schematically that I think to myself, well, I
- 28:42was sick actually played well, terrible, strange,
- 28:46terrible. We still, in my opinion, have a top,
- 28:49top three offensive tackle duo in the entire
- 28:52NFL. I think we can survive this. I think we
- 28:56can survive the offensive line play, provided
- 28:58we don't now suffer a slew of constant injuries
- 29:01and turnover. Once they settle on this line,
- 29:03which will be our seeker at left guard, and Cole
- 29:06Strange is your weak point at right guard, I
- 29:10think we can win a lot of football games with
- 29:11this offense, just because of the versatility
- 29:14of the different weapons that we have when we're
- 29:16healthy. Okay, fine, but why didn't we fix it?
- 29:22And, and we're, and we're also talking about
- 29:24positions that are not even injured. We went
- 29:27out and were they, were they hoping that Beardish
- 29:31was going to fix right and left guard simply
- 29:32by being there? No, like the performances from
- 29:35strange, you know, it was, it doesn't matter
- 29:37who was either side of him. It was, it was awful.
- 29:40The one thing I'll counter and say that, that,
- 29:42Hey, we're looking good. We're looking good.
- 29:43And we put up points and you know, but when things
- 29:47went wrong, we just went straight back to Justin
- 29:49Herbert. Let's, Hey, win the game for us, buddy.
- 29:52We really did you to throw and look, and look
- 29:54what happens. He goes deep in an awful throw
- 29:57into double coverage to Darius Davis, who, uh,
- 30:00is, as you said, is five foot nothing. And you
- 30:02found a jump ball to him. That was fairly under
- 30:04thrown anyway. Oh man. I, I, I worry because
- 30:09then well, I'm paying a lot of money to Mike
- 30:12McDaniel and he knows that you know, she's cold
- 30:15strangers having a rough game Actually, you know
- 30:17what? Let's just go pass. Let's just go pass
- 30:19pass pass pass put Justin Herbert under pressure
- 30:22so What I saw from an offensive standpoint is
- 30:26that when things got rough, we still just reverted
- 30:28back to, Hey, let's just trust Justin Herbert.
- 30:30And I thought this offense was meant to be the
- 30:33antithesis of that was meant to be the, Hey,
- 30:35when things are getting tough, Justin, Hey, we'll,
- 30:37we'll, my scheme will help you out. My scheme
- 30:39will help you out. My scheme will help you out.
- 30:40Now you give you sound like you're giving them
- 30:42a mulligan. Well, my, my retort to that is a
- 30:48major thing that set us back is in the second
- 30:50half. In the first half, I think we had zero
- 30:54offensive penalties. We may have had one. In
- 30:58the second half, we had seven, including five
- 31:01on one drive. So yes, maybe McDaniel's partially
- 31:06to blame because there are a lot of moving pieces
- 31:08and you get the occasional false start and motion
- 31:11knocking off the rust. Very hard to play play
- 31:14call. creatively from second and 25 and second
- 31:18and 30 and second and 15 although Mike McDaniel
- 31:21when it's second and 15 I don't think you run
- 31:24the ball you don't run the ball and second and
- 31:2615 make it third and 14 and then it's the end
- 31:29of the drive in fact that's when Lad McConkey
- 31:30got injured on that throw so I don't think McDaniel's
- 31:33scheme let us down in the second half I thought
- 31:35but But you can't separate the scheme and all
- 31:41of a sudden the penalties from the play -caller
- 31:43because it's the play -caller's responsibility
- 31:45to get the team ready Agree like that that that
- 31:49that that that is like you can't go because the
- 31:51team when you know They they were put back on
- 31:54second and 30 or whatever because of the penalties
- 31:56and go Oh, don't worry mark me Daniel. He can
- 31:58only do so much with that. No That's the, I think
- 32:00that's, I think that's BS. And it's like the
- 32:03team wasn't ready. And when the rubber hit the
- 32:05road, the team wasn't good enough. And so when
- 32:09things started getting a little hot, you know,
- 32:11we're behind all this turnovers. You're relying
- 32:13on your systems, making sure your play callings
- 32:15in there, making sure the guys know what they're
- 32:17doing. Uh, penalty, penalty, penalty, penalty,
- 32:20penalty. And again, you know, just reading Bill
- 32:22Walsh was the score settles itself. He talks
- 32:24about the, um, the programming of the first 20
- 32:28or 30 plays, the guys know what's what to do.
- 32:30But what do you do after that? What do you do
- 32:33after that? How is your team set up after that?
- 32:35That's where I feel like Harbaugh has got some,
- 32:38has got some answers to give, because that's
- 32:42not what I expect from a Harbaugh led, uh, coordinator
- 32:45in Mike McDaniel. So that, that, that's where
- 32:48I land there. And listen, they're going to sort
- 32:50this out. I'm sure it's a mulligan, it's week
- 32:52one, but that's how I'd retort to that, Alistair.
- 32:54Yeah, and that's part of the downside of having
- 32:56so much motion in your playbook and that's a
- 32:59that's a choice you make as a coach We were talking
- 33:01about this offline Greg Roman and other coaches
- 33:03maybe don't believe in doing as much of it and
- 33:06Part of this is the reason it's conservative
- 33:08perspective where you know We want to be able
- 33:10to go into hurry up and we don't want all of
- 33:12these procedural penalties because everything
- 33:14is so complicated We're running banana motions
- 33:17and orbit motions and someone's gonna stuff up
- 33:19every two drives. You just hope that you take
- 33:22the good with the bad and hit more explosive
- 33:24plays. Problem is I don't know if we've got any
- 33:27wide receivers outside like McConkie who are
- 33:29reliable at this stage Shaq because I'm seeing
- 33:31Trey Harris being a guy who gets the ball thrown
- 33:33to him but isn't showing like big strong tough
- 33:36hands. Quentin Johnson's getting the timing wrong
- 33:39on his routes, he's not coming back to the ball
- 33:41quickly enough, he doesn't really have a role
- 33:43in this game and Brennan Thompson takes the field
- 33:46for a handful of snaps. Once Ladd went down This
- 33:50game was basically all over and we thought we
- 33:53had quite a deep group. We now lose KLS to IR.
- 33:57And so I go back to, all right, the first couple
- 34:01of plays looked good. We were running the ball
- 34:03and Joku got a couple, but what happens when
- 34:06shit hits the fan? I go, I'm going back to two
- 34:08years and I'm going back to playing Houston.
- 34:10It's the lad McConkey show cause he's the only
- 34:13guy that can get open when things get hard. And
- 34:16so That this is another negative that I have.
- 34:19And I go, well, I thought the reason why we got
- 34:22rid of Greg Roman is because I've seen a lot
- 34:25of that. And hey, when McConkey's hitting his
- 34:27stride and everyone's working, you go, awesome,
- 34:29great. But when someone goes down and he's not
- 34:32in there, no one took up the slack. That's worrying,
- 34:37because again, I thought McDaniel was able to
- 34:39get these guys open. It was the scheme that gets
- 34:41them open. And now if this was the debate, you
- 34:46are winning 10 -0 is the final score here. Every
- 34:51excuse I try to come up with or contextual factor
- 34:57or qualification, you're saying, hang on, hang
- 34:59on, hang on, hang on. And, and making numerous
- 35:03cogent points. I have to, I have to condescend
- 35:06to your greater argumentative abilities on tonight's
- 35:10show. But it's, it's just like, how long do you
- 35:14have to prepare for week one? And granted, you
- 35:17don't have like, it's, it's the, it's the game
- 35:19that you can prepare for the most. Le Fleur obviously
- 35:21knew exactly what he wanted to do. And listen,
- 35:24I'm not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
- 35:25I think where my frustration falls is that it
- 35:29just, again, You can sit there for the whole
- 35:32off season and you can literally you should be
- 35:34sitting in the room going. Okay Hey, if things
- 35:36go really wrong, what happens if I do lose lad
- 35:38McConkey against the Cardinals? Okay, maybe I'll
- 35:40have this maybe I'll have this wrinkle But maybe
- 35:43I'm kind of underselling how hard it is to install
- 35:45a brand new offense in one season the changes
- 35:47that the offensive line the new language all
- 35:50that kind of stuff Yeah, I mean I'm I'm not I'm
- 35:56a bit down on lad McConkey because he actually
- 35:58looked like he was actually quite hurt, but you,
- 36:01Alistair believe that he's probably got just
- 36:02a few bruised ribs and he'll be all right. But
- 36:06I'm not saying it's not going to affect his play.
- 36:08That will affect your play for a while. He's
- 36:09going to have to run a backside dig rat again
- 36:12and know that when he catches the ball, he's
- 36:13going to get hit and he'll have sore ribs for
- 36:16Italy probably the rest of September. Let's be
- 36:18honest, maybe into October. So let's talk about
- 36:21Herbert in a second, but the one thing that I
- 36:23also wanted to pick up. I found David and Jokey's
- 36:26blatant offensive passer interference. It's a
- 36:30very, very small thing that maybe not a lot of
- 36:32people picked up, but it was so blighted and
- 36:34looked like a guy that was already frustrated.
- 36:37And I went, Hmm, that's interesting because if
- 36:42you actually watch it in replay, he gives him
- 36:44literally a double push in the, and you can see
- 36:47the quarterback or the safety go like as he's
- 36:50falling, he's like, man, what are you doing?
- 36:53That's a little bit worrisome as well. That's
- 36:56not what I expect on a hardball led team. Just
- 36:59a small little thing. We'll see how it plays
- 37:01out. I'm going to ask you a question about that
- 37:04in a second, but before we do, and just to wrap
- 37:07up our game analysis, because we could talk for
- 37:09freaking three hours, the two of us. If we could.
- 37:12We need to be disciplined. All right. Hardball
- 37:14like discipline, or maybe that's a poor analogy
- 37:17this week. Uh, Justin Herbert's game. After watching
- 37:24the tape today, I was pretty high early. The
- 37:29more I watched, I just thought, what am I seeing
- 37:32here? I'm trying to make excuses. I'm thinking,
- 37:35footwork looks wrong. He looks out of sync. The
- 37:39ball's coming out a bit too slowly. 2 .8 second
- 37:42time to throw. Missed missing the right window
- 37:45a couple of times turn downs turning down Quentin
- 37:48Johnston on a quick pass designed to go to him
- 37:51instead tucking it and running himself Things
- 37:54you don't notice on the broadcast on the fourth
- 37:57down failed attempt the two preceding downs You've
- 38:01got a Marion Hampton as an outlet receiver within
- 38:04gold in front of him blocking Herbert's looking
- 38:06downfield doesn't get to the outlet second down
- 38:10third down either of them might have scored because
- 38:12all all the defense were in the end zone with
- 38:14Quentin and Ladd and and you've just got Hampton
- 38:17off to the left and Herbert doesn't even look
- 38:19there so and from there Jack I'm just going to
- 38:23empty out my bag of notes right and then you
- 38:25you come in go second second half miss throw
- 38:28to Trey Ladd hospital pass eats a terrible sack
- 38:32on first down because he doesn't get the ball
- 38:33out quickly enough then just holds it instead
- 38:36of throwing it into the dirt I've already done
- 38:38a whole separate video on the forced interception
- 38:42with nine minutes left TDU crew check it out
- 38:44we've posted on our channel it's also an X I
- 38:46won't repeat myself here you can add to that
- 38:49if you want but but why why Justin Herbert feels
- 38:52the need to force that throw when you're down
- 38:55nine points on with nine minutes left on first
- 38:58and ten to Darius Davis in double coverage That's
- 39:03a guy who's a little bit checked out and early
- 39:05in the game the vides were nice you've got Madison
- 39:07Madison beer dancing after his beautiful touchdown
- 39:09throw to lad Andy's quote of the day was just
- 39:12say you just make Madison dance Justin just make
- 39:14her dance that's that's the game plan unfortunately
- 39:17though the positives were few and far between
- 39:20in that in that second half and it was noticeable
- 39:24Just how much better he was on play action than
- 39:26normal dropback passing game. I just thought
- 39:28play action guys are wide open He's feeling himself.
- 39:32He's groovy Dropback passing game. It looked
- 39:35like Lombardi. It looked like Greg Roman It looked
- 39:39like he didn't have anyone to throw to. It was
- 39:41a deeply disappointing performance from a guy
- 39:45who we all think is an NFL MVP candidate. Jack,
- 39:48you said if you're starting an NFL franchise
- 39:50today, he'd be the first player you would pick.
- 39:53How are you feeling about number 10? Yeah. Listen,
- 39:58I think the the simple takeaway is that when
- 40:01he wasn't under pressure, he played really well.
- 40:04I think he had a rating of about 71 or 70 per
- 40:07PFF. And then when he was blitzed or he was under
- 40:09pressure, that rate goes down and sure. And people
- 40:14will say it was the offensive lines problem.
- 40:16Again, it was cold, strange. It was Trey Pipkins.
- 40:19Sure, sure, sure, sure. The one thing that I
- 40:22took away from the game. Is and the bigger problem
- 40:26and you alluded to it Alistair is that I didn't
- 40:30think Arizona really needed to blitz heavily
- 40:33or do anything too complex in the pressure game
- 40:36to speed Herbert up when the pocket broke especially
- 40:42on the pure passing situations. I felt like the
- 40:47whole operation just lost efficiency and ball
- 40:51security. Everything just started going awry.
- 40:56That's worrying as well because I take it back
- 40:59and it's all about preparation, preparation,
- 41:02preparation. What can you can control is you
- 41:04can control how prepared you are to go into game
- 41:07and how much control you've got on these things.
- 41:10Now, maybe I'm a neophyte and there's such a
- 41:13difference between real NFL live play week one
- 41:17and preseason and training. And I'm not stupid.
- 41:20I know that there is, but I'm, it's, it's just
- 41:24not why I expected in year three from a harbor
- 41:28led organization and that throw to Darius Davis,
- 41:32what's going on. I, again, everything just felt
- 41:36like it, it just tumbled. And again, that's,
- 41:39those are mental lapses that I wouldn't expect
- 41:41from a disciplined unit. And to sort of round
- 41:46it out before we, we need to talk about actually,
- 41:48no, I'll go straight into it is that that blocked
- 41:50pun is, it's just, it's the cherry on top to
- 41:54show, in my opinion, if we're having this debate
- 41:56and one of the main sort of tenants or foundations
- 41:59of my, this podcast has been, I just don't think
- 42:02the charges were prepared. Special teams is The
- 42:05is, is the one unit where you can say it's all
- 42:08about detail and it's all about repetition and
- 42:10it's all about knowing your job to let an ex
- 42:12charge a semi for Hoco straight up the middle
- 42:15to block the punt to essentially kind of change
- 42:17the game and lose the game. Uh, I reckon Fikens
- 42:20on a bit of notice because that's just not, that's
- 42:23not good enough. It is just not good enough.
- 42:25That was a key message or unfortunately in protection
- 42:28on that play, uh, tough, tough, tough. Yeah.
- 42:33All right. Uh, and I don't want to, you know,
- 42:36I don't want to go into this area, but if you
- 42:38listen to Justin Herbert's midweek press conference
- 42:41and his post game press conference, just have
- 42:45a listen. Let us know what you think. Vibes are
- 42:48a bit weird before the game. They're saying,
- 42:50Justin, you know, week one new season, does it
- 42:53feel, does that feel any different? Uh, how do
- 42:56you mean? Oh, you know, it's week one. It's the
- 43:00start of a season. for that to have been his
- 43:02response he just keeps his cards very close to
- 43:05his chest but but it's bordering on there's people
- 43:09are misinterpreting his maybe quiet nature for
- 43:14apathy or the guy's over it or the guy's packed
- 43:17in or maybe maybe he's now more interested in
- 43:20his life outside of football that's the speculation
- 43:23you invite however It's week one only not having
- 43:26those penalties and being in first and 15 and
- 43:28second and 25. Hopefully that makes him feel
- 43:31like he doesn't have his clock sped up because
- 43:33he's not having to throw the ball 25 yards to
- 43:35complete a first down. All right. Let's end it
- 43:40there in terms of our game recap, Jack. Although
- 43:44I do want to ask you a final question, not game
- 43:47related. I want to take you back to the decision
- 43:51to hire Jim Harbour. Okay. Here we go. Should
- 43:57the hire have been Ben Johnson? I mean, 59 points
- 44:03in a week one would have been nice. It's just
- 44:05interesting to look at the sliding door. I think
- 44:08the final two, we had a pick of different people
- 44:12to interview. I remember it was an incredible
- 44:14list of candidates and there was Jim Harbaugh
- 44:16and then there was Ben Johnson who everyone knew
- 44:18was schematically brilliant. They just didn't
- 44:20want to go with the first time guy standing here
- 44:23today. How are you feeling about it? Oh, well,
- 44:29I'm gonna get eaten alive either way. How am
- 44:31I feeling about it? So what I find quite fascinating
- 44:37is that when I listened to Ben Johnson talk,
- 44:40and the way that the the accountability that
- 44:43he seems to put on the whole organization, what
- 44:46did he what did he say? He said, Oh, you put
- 44:47up 59 points is like, yep. Yep. We'll do better.
- 44:52It's just searching for greatness all the time.
- 44:55I missed a couple of throws. I missed, missed
- 44:57a couple. So we've got to tighten that up and
- 44:58we're going to keep on going. Whereas The one
- 45:02thing that I must admit I am getting tired of
- 45:04and a couple of social media pundits picked it
- 45:07up is the constant glazing Jim Harbour has for
- 45:10all his players now. And there's a difference
- 45:13between protecting your players and saying, Hey,
- 45:15no, Justin Herbert's fine. Now he's a good player.
- 45:16He's all right. And then going, he's going to
- 45:18be the greatest ever. He's going to be the greatest.
- 45:20You're not sitting around at Thanksgiving, Jim.
- 45:24Okay. You can't just say that stuff because people
- 45:26are going to come out and now say, Well, aren't
- 45:28you just putting more pressure saying something
- 45:30like that? Like you're actually, you know, cause
- 45:32when he's not, and when he is poor, they're going
- 45:35to be like, this guy's like, is this head coach
- 45:38nuts? So I listen, I don't want to question harbored
- 45:43just yet because the last two seasons have been
- 45:45building towards something. And who knows against
- 45:47the Raiders, we could do something incredible.
- 45:49Uh, but yeah, it is sliding doors moments. What
- 45:52I've liked the, what I've liked the They're sort
- 45:57of the liberal pick when I say liberal, not as
- 46:00in politics, but the progressive. That's what
- 46:01I want in, in, in Johnson. Yeah, that would have
- 46:03been awesome. But I just don't think that's the
- 46:05Spanish family. I think it's stability. It's
- 46:07the old guy. They, they want some good conservatism.
- 46:10They're not political conservatism, but just,
- 46:13you know, this is the stable hire Alistair. I
- 46:16don't know. Like, how do you feel? Yeah. And
- 46:18it's easier to say that now at the time Harbaugh's
- 46:21coming off winning the Natty. We've just gone
- 46:23through the first time head coach kind of failed
- 46:25experience and you tend to get the topsy turvy
- 46:28seesaw where you, you start, you have a defensive
- 46:30head coach and then you have an offensive head
- 46:32coach and then you have a young head coach and
- 46:34then you have an old head coach. I think Harbaugh
- 46:36was the right guy at that time. Although I would
- 46:38have been very happy with either. All right.
- 46:41To end the show today, we're going to do our.
- 46:44vintage yeah nah and nah yeah awards. For first
- 46:47time listeners, Aussies tend to say yeah nah
- 46:50when they just want to say nah and vice versa.
- 46:53I'm going to hand out those awards for today.
- 46:56So for the negative award, the yeah nah award,
- 47:00plenty to choose from, but we have to just give
- 47:03it to Chris O 'Leary, the 34 year old. And for
- 47:06me, You know, coaching last year in the mid -American
- 47:09football conference, it's not the same as the
- 47:11NFL, but he comes into the building and everyone's
- 47:13going, yeah, it's the Jesse Minter acolyte. He's
- 47:16the young gun. He's passionate. He speaks well.
- 47:19He looks like he's on the cutting edge of scheme.
- 47:22But then you see on the first Drive of the game.
- 47:25He's running a fire zone pressure on his first
- 47:28ever third and long with Dewan rushing the passer
- 47:31Tully dropping into coverage trying to cover
- 47:34Trey McBride and then having to stop a scrambling
- 47:36jacobi preset and then there's Tully dropping
- 47:39to coverage a second time on the same drive and
- 47:42Chris O 'Leary They flashed him on the broadcast
- 47:45and he's sitting there Chewing chewing the gum
- 47:51voraciously looking, looking completely overwhelmed.
- 47:56And I started thinking, oh, we started thinking,
- 48:00ah, in pre -season weeks two and three, when
- 48:02they're just blitzing every down. I think this
- 48:05guy's not going to be one of these just blitz
- 48:07thinking blitzing solves every problem, is it?
- 48:10So that starts for Chris O 'Leary. Thankfully
- 48:13it's any given Sunday, a week's a long time in
- 48:15football, et cetera, et cetera. Tough, tough
- 48:20baptism of fire for the O 'Leary clan. My Nah
- 48:24Yeah award today is to Jamari Caldwell. And I'm
- 48:30giving it to the big man 99 because I thought
- 48:33during the preseason. He was a little quiet and
- 48:36with Delvin Tomlinson coming in and Nick Barrett,
- 48:39the rookie, I was starting to think, what is
- 48:41his snap allocation going to look like in this
- 48:43game? But I posted something on TDU film. He,
- 48:46he drew a holding call from Hjalte Froholt. He
- 48:49did a one arm tackle of Jeremiah Love from behind.
- 48:52He was washing up and down the line chasing backs.
- 48:55He got a pressure on Jacoby Brissette from the
- 48:57five technique. I just thought he played with
- 48:59a lot of effort and a lot of heart Jack. And
- 49:01on this show, we love players with heart. So
- 49:03Jamar - Caldwell, you are going to get the Nah
- 49:06Yeah Award for this week. Well done fella. And
- 49:10now to end the show. For the first time in season
- 49:142026, it is Jack's hashtag teachable moment.
- 49:19Yes. I had to turn to poetry this week and I
- 49:29have, and I found as I was looking through my
- 49:32numerous books and my sort of small library at
- 49:34work, W. B. Yates. And it goes as such, he was
- 49:41writing after the First World War. And he wrote
- 49:46a poem called The Second Coming. As he imagined
- 49:51the old order or an old order, you know, sort
- 49:55of almost coming apart around the world after
- 49:58after World War One. And so this is a a small
- 50:02um a small verse from it turning and turning
- 50:06in the widening gyre the falcon cannot hear the
- 50:10falconer things fall apart the center cannot
- 50:16hold as i was reading i thought that last line
- 50:22has a fairly sharp double meaning here for this
- 50:25charges loss chris On defense, Arizona completed
- 50:3115 of 17 targets between the numbers for 157
- 50:36yards. The short middle alone produced 91 yards
- 50:42with McBride and Bourne doing most of the damage.
- 50:46Mike with the charges offensive line, the center
- 50:50also failed. Colestrange with wax lyrical already,
- 50:53or at least I have allowed five of the eight
- 50:56pressures. charged to the main offensive lineman.
- 51:00On one side, the middle of the coverage opened.
- 51:02On the other, the middle of the pocket collapsed.
- 51:05So this is quite a good way to end the show.
- 51:09Chris and Mike, what is the teachable moment
- 51:12to you both? Were these isolated execution errors
- 51:15or did the structures fail to protect the players?
- 51:21What needs to change to make sure the centre
- 51:25holds? Class dismissed. Well done, Jack. Things
- 51:32fall apart. The centre cannot hold. Jake Slaughter,
- 51:35no holding this week. Okay, one's enough for
- 51:37the season. All right. Thanks for sticking around
- 51:41to the end, listeners. Just to let you know,
- 51:43we're going to do a new cadence this week. We've
- 51:46heard your calls for more content. So each week
- 51:48we'll do our recap show. which we'll release
- 51:51tonight. And then we will do a preview show a
- 51:54couple of days before next week's game. So you'll
- 51:56be hearing from us again later this week. We
- 51:59hope to have Andy back from overseas soon. He
- 52:03may be joining us sooner than you'd think. But
- 52:06Jack, unless you've got anything else you'd like
- 52:08to say to end the show, no, thanks for joining
- 52:10and we will see you next time on the Thunder
- 52:13Down Under Chargers podcast. He's got Floyd turning,
- 52:42got it!
