- 3:13Rich Girl matter. Expense account Item one two hundred and eighty dollars round trip
- 3:22plane ticket and incidentals including sunglasses Hertford to Los Angeles. I arrived, rested,
- 3:27ready, and right on schedule. Also on schedule was Roger Hackey,
- 3:30master's Los Angeles agent, well turned out to be a repress comedian become insurance
- 3:35sales YEP. I said to myself, that's Johnny Dollar. I said,
- 3:38you are Johnny Dollar, aren't you? In person? You're Roger Hackey,
- 3:40gean person. You got the oldfield hem chip simpanical, we call it out
- 3:46here. Have an ice trip? Yeah good, good. Airplane scare me.
- 3:52Don't like being up there in the wild blue yonder terra Burmer's my dish
- 3:55tea slow, but sure they call me. Yeah. Well, now you
- 4:00just follow me. We'll jump in my jealoppi and I'll have you at the
- 4:02Beverly Hilton. Before you can say happy hooligan, you said, huh oh,
- 4:06yeah, here we go. Cloud of dust and all that. The
- 4:16Ryan from the air terminal till the hotel was hot, silent on my part,
- 4:20and unproductive so far as the case was concerned. Roger Hacke kept up
- 4:24a running commentary on everything from bad actors to the zodiac. It wasn't until
- 4:29I was settling in my room with drinking hand and shoeless feet propped up that
- 4:31I could get him to switch to the two hundred thousand dollars a prime.
- 4:33Her name is Cynthia Derbit. How much do you know about it? Nothing?
- 4:38Ert Major said, you'd give me the background. Now she's a strange
- 4:41one. You know what a chameleon is? Sure, elizard that changes color?
- 4:45So what So that's the kind of a girl Cynthia Durban is, at
- 4:47least she is. Now you're losing me, Roger, begin at the beginning.
- 4:50Now you're the doctor, as the Siamese Twins said, after the operation,
- 4:55what's missing? Yeah? How did you meet Anthea Debin? Well,
- 5:00she came into the office yesterday, no call, no appointment. There she
- 5:03was ill. What'd she like? Trim, real, trim and expensive?
- 5:09Just casually announced she wanted to buy two hundred thousand dollars worth of insurance.
- 5:13Huh, well, not exactly. She started asking about various policies, you
- 5:15know, endowment, straight life, et cetera, and how and when they
- 5:18paid off? And she kept giving me the big eye and cross leg routine.
- 5:23M she tells you anything about herself? Oh, didn't have to.
- 5:26I already knew. She's practically a fixture in the society section of the Sunday
- 5:30Papers, garden parties, opening nights and all that, but only lately.
- 5:33Her husband, Peter Durban, he's been a public figure ever since they got
- 5:36married about three years ago. But she has no now just the last couple
- 5:40of months or so. How old is she? All round? Twenty five,
- 5:44blonde, blooming and gorgeous infiguratively speaking, I think that she has the
- 5:49money. Huh yeah right. He was a well torsoed movie bit player with
- 5:54a champagne appetite. I see, now, what about this surprise angle?
- 5:58Ell? She came right to the said her husband had just had a complete
- 6:00physical, asked if his doctor's report would be acceptable. If so, okay,
- 6:04But you didn't sign her up? Why wish you didn't give me the
- 6:08chance? What do you mean? All of a sudden she reached in her
- 6:11purse and pulled out a piece of paper with a name and address on it
- 6:13announced this was her attorney. See him, she said, smiled big and
- 6:16walked out. Didn't you go and see the attorney right away? A guy
- 6:19by the name of Crane Collins has big, plush officers downtown old senior partner
- 6:25type. What did he have to say? Oh, nothing except routine questions
- 6:28about filling out the forms, expediting the procedure, importance of secrecy. For
- 6:31the surprise, Why didn't you ask a few questions? Couldn't What do you
- 6:35mean, couldn't? She was there doing what sitting back in the corner,
- 6:40all huddled up like a mouse waiting to be pounced on. Didn't say a
- 6:43word while Collins and I filled out the papers. Yeah, she signed them
- 6:47as if they were a death Warwick went back to the corner and stared at
- 6:50the wall. Now I see what you meant by that, comedian remarked,
- 6:54Yeah, she's too much for me. Yeah, a leopard can change its
- 6:58spots too. Expense a count item two three dollars and twenty five cents taxi
- 7:03fair to the offices of Crane Collins. So far, all I knew was
- 7:09that the wealthy young woman wanted a pot full of insurance on her husband.
- 7:13If it hadn't been for the surprise request, it would have been routine.
- 7:16Now it wasn't, and the people involved, one of them at least,
- 7:19were not routine. I was ushered into an oak panel office high above the
- 7:24streets of Los Angeles. Good afternoon, mister Dollar. Mister Collins, your
- 7:29card identifies you as an insurance investigator. Mister Dollar, I don't believe I
- 7:32understand. Cynthia Durban is your client. Yes, you represented this client yesterday
- 7:39and the signing of an application for a two hundred thousand dollars straight life insurance
- 7:43policy on her husband. Yes, I represent the company. Everything is in
- 7:46order, is it not. Insurance is a lot of things, mister Collins.
- 7:51A surprise to the insured is one of the things that isn't. My
- 7:56client is adamant in disrespect. Call it a work if you will. You
- 8:01expect a company to wish what two hundred thousand dollars policy on a quirk?
- 8:05Well? How long have you known missus Durban since she was born? Then
- 8:09you know her father knew him. I am his executor. Ah mother also
- 8:15deceased. Both parents died when Cynthia was seventeen. I was her guardian and
- 8:20have been her legal advisor since she came of age. Was she well provided
- 8:24for? Very? What kind of a man is her husband? Young?
- 8:30About thirty, tall, good, lucky? No, no, mister Collins,
- 8:33not statistics, your impressions. He plays an excellent game of golf,
- 8:39gets along well with people when he wants to. But you don't like him,
- 8:45do you? In this profession, mister Dalla, I neither like nor
- 8:48dislike people. I represent them, and that representation is based on fact.
- 8:54Well, in my profession, we go by feel as well as fact.
- 9:00Well, tell me candidly, mister Collins, do you think there's anything strange
- 9:03about this request for insurance on her husband? As I said, ideal in
- 9:07fact, not feelings. As a client, she sought professional assistant. Ago,
- 9:13I supplied it. Where do the Durbins live? I'd rather? Oh,
- 9:18now, look, I can get it from any society editor in town.
- 9:22My secretary will give you the information, all right, Thank you.
- 9:26By the way, don't tell missus Durbin or anyone else that we've had this
- 9:28discussion. If you do, there will be no insurance issue interference with investigative
- 9:33procedure. Fact, mister Collins, I understand expense account item three two dollars
- 9:46and sixty cents phone call when taxi to Roger Hackey's office. I need one
- 9:50story building an americal mile on Wilship Bulevard. Purpose to borrow Roger's company car.
- 9:56The Dobins lived in one of those colonial mansions out in Beverly Hills,
- 9:58surrounded by curving driveways, spacious lawns, swimming pool and cabanas, all of
- 10:03it enclosed by thick high walls and electronically controlled gates. The mention of insurance
- 10:07on the intercom got me in. Cynthia Durban was everything Roger said she was
- 10:13the first time he met her. That is, Please excuse my appearance,
- 10:18mister Doll. I've been swimming. Oh I don't mind at all, Missus
- 10:24Durban. Really you shouldn't have come here to deliver the party that if my
- 10:30husband has been home, no surprise, No, that would have spoiled everything.
- 10:37Well, may I have it? Please? The paperwork has not been
- 10:39completed yet. What are you doing here? What do you want? Get
- 10:43to the point? Wow, just a few questions, Missus Durban. My
- 10:48colleague, mister Hackey should have handled these details yesterday, but he was somewhat
- 10:52rushed. Oh, and there's nothing wrong with would you care for a drink?
- 10:58Thanks? Barred up by the pool show it. She was wearing a
- 11:09bikini and high heel beach sandlers, and she led the way. I was
- 11:13hoping it was two miles to the pool instead of the seventy five yards.
- 11:18It turned out to be. I makes the drinks, and we settled down
- 11:20on a couple of sun lodges. Ah, those jails just formalities. Actually,
- 11:30you ought to be the beneficiary. Yes, that was discussed yesterday.
- 11:35Ah, yes, so was What does your husband do, Missus Durban?
- 11:39He doesn't work, if that's what you mean, he doesn't have to.
- 11:43I have enough for both of us, Johnny. Yeah, question my drink?
- 11:48Oh sure, so tell me did you ever contemplate divorce? Divorce?
- 11:54What did I makes you ask a question like that? Well, of course,
- 11:58not different mine what a couple has. Yeah, I suppose you got
- 12:03a point there, Ye are, Thank you, Johnny. Why did you
- 12:09pick two weeks from today to be the effective date of the policy? Isn't
- 12:13that? My business? Is birthday, Missus Durban? Your husband the surprise?
- 12:18Yes, yes it is ristas I to throw a big party for him.
- 12:22No, I don't know, Johnny. Your husband would be worth a
- 12:26lot more to you dead than alive, wouldn't he, missus Durban, Sure,
- 12:31sure, yeah, but you haven't answered my question. I'm sure you'll
- 12:37have to excuse me. I have a headache, terrible heavache. Something was
- 12:43definitely wrong here. A girl of her age should have flared at my questions,
- 12:46should have snapped back at me instead of blindly running away. Yeah,
- 12:50something is wrong, all right, But I've seen what I'd come to see
- 12:54both facets of Cynthia Durbin's personality, and was one of them actually thinking in
- 13:00terms of murder? My job find out back two of yours, truly,
- 13:20Johnny Dollar. In a moment, an interesting parallel hit me the other day.
- 13:24When a baby takes its first three steps, everybody is happy and gives
- 13:28a cheer for its progress. The same thing happens when a country takes important
- 13:33steps toward lasting world peace and freedom. That great American patriot, Benjamin Franklin
- 13:39outlined three important steps in the drive toward a lasting world peace and freedom of
- 13:43mankind. The last and most important of these steps was and is, to
- 13:48get the people of the world to talk to each other and to help each
- 13:52other. This is the essence of the people to people program that Americans have
- 13:56put into operation all over the world in such a great success that it is
- 14:01beginning to work both ways. Not too long ago, in Korea, Tom
- 14:05Lawrence, a yeoman in the United States Navy, lost his wallet on a
- 14:09street in Seoul. The wallet was found by a fifteen year old Korean boy,
- 14:15who gave it to his father. The father promptly returned it to Lawrence
- 14:18with nothing missing. Tom Lawrence decided that this kind of honesty should pay off.
- 14:26He visited the seven members of the Korean family and gave them eighty pounds
- 14:30of rice. He then promised to bring the family fifty pounds of rice each
- 14:35month he remained in Korea. The Korean father said, I think this is
- 14:39much more than I deserve. Maybe it was, and maybe it wasn't.
- 14:46But who can put a price on better understanding among the peoples of the world.
- 14:50For through better understanding of each other comes an understanding of freedom, the
- 14:56right of all men everywhere. And now act two of yours, truly,
- 15:01Johnny Dollar and the poor little rich girl met her. I sat beside one
- 15:15of the pluscious swimming pools in Beverly Hills alone. I finished my drink slowly.
- 15:22Cynthia Durban was a strange one, all right, but her actions seemed
- 15:24compulsory rather than natural. If she really was thinking about murder for two hundred
- 15:30thousand dollars in one chunk, she was pretty crude about it. If she
- 15:33was trying to oppress her husband for some on her own reason, she'd selected
- 15:35a mighty off feat way to do it. If she was going off her
- 15:39rocker, well, the extension phone hung on a post beside the bar.
- 15:45I don't ordinarily listen in on other people's conversations, but this one thing wrong.
- 15:52Dolly er, Oh, I've got to talk to you. Something has
- 15:56happened. I think you not on the phone. Meet me here in half
- 16:02an hour, Yeah, half an hour here, goodbye soon via Hello Eric.
- 16:14As I strolled to my car, nobody asked me to come back again
- 16:17sometime, not that I expected it. I parked a block down the street,
- 16:21adjusted to the rear view mirror, and got comfortable. A cigarette later,
- 16:25she came zooming out and a Cad convertible and headed my way. I've
- 16:30tailed a few cars of my time, but this kid was either scared silly,
- 16:33or she'd learned her evasive tactics from bull Hausey. I lost her in
- 16:36the first ten blocks, So I drove round to a Hackey's car back to
- 16:40his office and prepared for the horse laugh I had coming. It came.
- 16:42Yeah, she lost you. Oh that's a dad, real dad. Hey
- 16:48tell me, do you always laugh when you're about to lose the commission on
- 16:52a two hundred thousand dollars policy? Yeah? Oh, well, what are
- 16:56you gonna do now, Johnny? Who is Eric? Well he's not a
- 16:59brother, that's for sure. Ow I don't know, you know. For
- 17:03two cents, I turned in a negative report and go on back to high
- 17:06fret. Oh wait, now, you can't do that. This is a
- 17:07big deal for you. For me, it's a pain in the neck.
- 17:11But you can't turn in a negative report just because she's got an extra curricular
- 17:14boyfriend. You don't even know who he is? And what about her husband?
- 17:18What about him? Here? Here? I got the dope right here
- 17:21today's paper. And it's a good picture of him. Read what it says.
- 17:25Peter Durban, one of Los Angeles better amateur golfers, plays out of
- 17:29Silver O Country Club, where the state opener is being held this week.
- 17:33He's expected to finish in the top. Roger, what time is it?
- 17:37Four point thirty? Thanks? Hey, where you going? I'm gonna turn
- 17:40my head of being a reporter. What what are you talking about? Ronchier?
- 17:42I'm going to interview mister Peter Durbin for the Interstate Publicity Press Association.
- 17:48Oh expense account had him for two dollars and forty cents camp for heir to
- 17:56the Silver Old Country Club, which nestled in a big ravine north of Sunset
- 17:59Boulevard, some fifteen minutes Fromroger's office. The last players were coming in from
- 18:03the afternoon round when I got there, and Peter durban was among them.
- 18:06I waited until after the radio and TV boys had got through, and then
- 18:08caught him in a corner of the loner room. Yes, who you,
- 18:14Johnny Dollar, Interstate Publicity Press. I'd like to ask you a few questions.
- 18:17Well I've already given my interviews. Well, sure, I know,
- 18:19but this is a feature stuff. Best part of the day. There's the
- 18:22gallery, body and stuff like that. Oh, all right, but make
- 18:26it quick. Yes, sir, is your wife here? No, she
- 18:29never watches me playing. Oh, where's she now pull at home where else?
- 18:33But now see here, you're playing a great game, mister Durban.
- 18:37You figure you're gonna win this tournament? Huh yes, I think so.
- 18:41McMahon has turned into sixty nine, of course, but I'm still three strokes
- 18:45up on him. I play a much steadier game than he did. Oh
- 18:48yeah, sure this is your home club, isn't it. Yes, it's
- 18:52one of the best in the country. Yeah, I might. Defined course,
- 18:55you must be pretty well healed. That's none of your reading concerned.
- 19:00I'm sorry. Say, you have a birthday coming up soon, haven't you?
- 19:03How did you know? Oh what? You're a prominent personality, mister
- 19:07Durban. We keep a file on this sort of thing, on important people
- 19:11like you. Oh oh, I see. Oh sure, I suppose you're
- 19:14gonna have a big affair. And know. As a matter of fact,
- 19:17the annual Western Road Races fall on my birthday each year. As a reporter,
- 19:22you should recall that I won both last year and the year before.
- 19:26Oh yeah, sure, Well, happy birthday, mister Durbin, and good
- 19:30luck. Well is that all you want? That's all I need to know.
- 19:33Thanks, fact three of yours truly Johnny Dollar in a moment, no
- 19:42folklore could be all boastful and dynamic. Some of it is about the man
- 19:47at the bottom of the pile, like the one they tell of the traveler
- 19:49who just had to get across a river. He argued with the boatman.
- 19:52But that boatman wasn't about to move, Nope, not with the spring thaw
- 19:57making it a mighty ugly river. The traveler was insistent. Finally, the
- 20:02boatman agreed, but it was going to cost a whole quarter to get across.
- 20:07But I ain't got but fifteen cents. You gotta take me for that.
- 20:11Your regular fairs only ten cents, The boatman stood firm. I ain't
- 20:15going that soul anybody that ain't got but fifteen cents. It just don't make
- 20:22no difference which side of the river he's on. Anyhow, Folklore belongs to
- 20:27every nation's legendary past, and I guess we Americans have our share of some
- 20:33good ones, like the one about ah. But we'll have to save that
- 20:37one for the next time we traveled your way. See you then, and
- 20:40now Act three of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and the poor little rich
- 20:44girl matter expense count Adam five six dollars even TAXI fed of the office of
- 20:51Attorney Trane Collins, with whom I could now agree on one point. I
- 20:55didn't like Peter Devineta. It was six fifteen after hours when I entered the
- 20:59office Colins, Douglas, Walsh, Hanley, and James, the senior partner
- 21:03was still there. His door was slightly ajar and I heard voices which stopped
- 21:07abruptly when I had it. Oh, mister Dollar, rather late in the
- 21:14day, isn't it. I don't keep office hours, mister Colin. I'm
- 21:15very busy. Then I'll wait everywhere as you wait, I wished. So
- 21:22I waited, but not for long, because about three minutes later Collins came
- 21:26out, carefully, closed the door of his office behind him, and strode
- 21:30easily toward me, oozing his most charming professional smile. No, mister Dollar,
- 21:36what can I do for you? Why didn't you tell me the first
- 21:38time I was here that Peter Durban in addition to being a first class golfer,
- 21:44was also a racing enthusiast. It just didn't occur to me. Do
- 21:48you know any insurance company in the world that would issue a two hundred thousand
- 21:52dollars policy on a man who risks his life in a racing car, then
- 21:56your company will not issue the policy. What are you thanks? Now tell
- 22:00me something. Who is Eric? Eric? That's right, well, the
- 22:06name is not familiar to me. Now, look, mister Collins, I
- 22:08have a feeling that even you will admit that withholding information in connection with a
- 22:11possible murder is punishable by law. Fact, I am fully aware of that.
- 22:17But I fail to see what that. What are you doing? It
- 22:21didn't invite me into your office. I just wondered, why Usaul, have
- 22:23you know ethics? Man Cynthia Durbin was in there a few minutes ago,
- 22:27wasn't she, mister doll wasn't she? If it is the intention of your
- 22:33company not to issue the insurance to my client, I will so inform her
- 22:38and that will end the matter so far as you are concerned. Now,
- 22:42please be good enough to leave. You really don't know or care what's going
- 22:48on, do you. You're so wrapped up in the letter of the law
- 22:52that preventing a possible murder doesn't even occur to you. Another one of your
- 22:56feelings. But I don't have the remotest time, Oh dear, what you're
- 23:00talking about? Good Night? Mister Dollar, good night, mister Collins expense
- 23:08ac count adem six nine dollars and fifty cents cocktails and dinner. I should
- 23:14have written my reports negative and high tailored back to Hartford. But when you
- 23:17see in your mind's eye the possibility of a racing car careening off the road
- 23:21at one hundred and twenty five miles an hour exactly two weeks from now,
- 23:23you don't just stick to business and call it quits. Eric, wherever he
- 23:27tended bar was the key, but how to find it? I was on
- 23:32dessert in the evening paper, giving my subconscious wine a chance to work it
- 23:34out, when all of a sudden I was looking at it on the Society
- 23:37pay expense, a count adam seven nineteen dollars, including taxi fair to the
- 23:45Los Angeles Police headquarters, where I had a pleasant chat with the captain on
- 23:48duty. Then a tuxedo rental in the same taxi to the step at the
- 23:52hotel. A special pass let me in his guest at a crowded and bejeweled
- 23:56society benefit and enjoying the party, mister Collins Dollar, what are you doing
- 24:04here? And joining the party too, mister missus Durban arrived you are the
- 24:10most annoyingly persistent individual. I please, no compliments. See you later.
- 24:21After a few minutes, I spotted it, dressed to the teeth. She
- 24:23turned suddenly and saw me. I expected surprise, chagrin, fear, most
- 24:29anything, but what I got the dollar, Johnny. I am glad to
- 24:33see you. I was such a boy this afternoon. Forgive me what your
- 24:37exit was rather sudden? My headaches all gone? Isn't that wonderful? Why
- 24:42will you dance with me? Pleasure Dollar? That's such an exciting name.
- 24:52Is your husband with you tonight? No, poor dear, he's playing in
- 24:56a golf tournament and has to get his rest him along. Yes, don't
- 25:03you find it warm? And hear all these people? Let's go out on
- 25:07the terrace? Sure? Why not? Once more? I was following her,
- 25:17and it was just as interesting as the first time. But my mind
- 25:21and eyes were elsewhere. Somewhere in this crowd was the eric I was looking
- 25:23for. He had to be. Then I spotted him, thirty five,
- 25:26big and broad hawk nose, circling towards the terrace from the left. She
- 25:32threaded her way to a potted palm and a far corner of the terrace turned
- 25:34and looked at me. Her eyes were feverishly bright in the moonlight. She
- 25:38was beautiful. You're a very charming man, Johnny. I wish you wish.
- 25:47What do you find me interesting? You haven't answered my question? Oh,
- 25:59I find you interesting, Cynthia? Who is Eric the man you went
- 26:04to see this afternoon after you let me sad? You know who I'm talking
- 26:08about because you and Eric, I don't know how we're planning to kill your
- 26:14husband two weeks from now and collect two hundred thousand dollars insurance two weeks from
- 26:18now in the road race. Make it look like an accident, no doubt.
- 26:23I ducked and whirled around as a fist graze passed my ear and brought
- 26:26up one from the floor with all I had. Cynthia stood there a moment,
- 26:33then quietly folded up and lay on the floor and a heaped sob it.
- 26:38Oh they are allah? What have you done to this poor girl and
- 26:45that man? Very simple comments I've been combining. Feel that fact the house
- 26:57stick and I got them out of there. Awknosed to police headquarters, Cynthia
- 27:00to a hospital. Eric turned out to be a quack psychiatrist who preyed on
- 27:06unstable rich women and who was wanted in both New York and Florida. He
- 27:10had a perfect setup in Cynthia Durban until he went for murder in the big
- 27:12money Missus Durban. While the doctors tell me she ought to be normal mentally
- 27:18in a couple of years with proper psychiatric treatments. Expense account total three hundred
- 27:22and seventeen dollars and seventy five cents. Yours, truly, Johnny dull,
- 27:38Our star will return in just a moment. Our flag now numbers fifty stars,
- 27:44and behind each star there stands yet another flag representing one of the fifty
- 27:48states. North Carolina state flag bears the initial of her name on either side
- 27:53of a white star. Above, on a yellow scroll is the date May
- 27:57twentieth, seventeen seventy five. Below, on a similar scroll is the date
- 28:03April twelfth, seventeen seventy six. The seventeen seventy five date stands for an
- 28:07early declaration of independence known as the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. April twelfth,
- 28:14seventeen seventy six was the date of the first constitutional convention held in Halifax.
- 28:19The Halifax Resolve was a document that placed the Old North State in the front
- 28:23rank, both in point of time and spirit, among those colonies which demanded
- 28:29unconditional freedom and absolute independence from any foreign power. North Carolina State flag,
- 28:36the flag of the twelfth State and of the Union, was adopted on March
- 28:38ninth, eighteen eighty five. Now here's our star to tell you about next
- 28:44week's story. Next week, a beautiful yacht, a beautiful charming girl,
- 28:48and a man who wished he'd never heard of either of them. Join us,
- 28:52won't you? Yours Tully Johnny duff Yours Truly Johnny Dollars, starring Bob
- 29:07Bailey, originates in Hollywood. Written by Alan Botzer, it is produced and
- 29:11directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard in our cast were Virginia Gray, Herbellis,
- 29:17Frank Nelson, Marvin Miller, and Peter Leeds. Be sure to join us
- 29:21next week, same time in station for another exciting story of Yours Truly,
- 29:26Johnny Dollar. This is Bud Sewell speaking. This is the United States Armed
- 29:49Forces Radio and Television Service PATO. Welcome back, Well. This was actually
- 31:14a solid mystery episode with a nice twist on the usual scheming wife plot where
- 31:22you really do have just an emotionally sick woman being taken advantage of, which
- 31:29makes perfect sense of the story. The script was by Alan Botzer, who
- 31:33worked in the radio industry, but this was his first and only yours truly
- 31:37Johnny Dollar script, though he did write the pilot script for gun Smoke that
- 31:44we played quite a while back, which was more detective in origin. Well,
- 31:48now we turn to some listener comments and feedback, and we start off
- 31:52with Tim, who writes, during episode fourteen forty one, there was a
- 31:59commercial for Sister Cities that references events from nineteen fifty nine and sixty even though
- 32:05the share show aired in nineteen fifty seven. How is this possible? Did
- 32:09they splice in more recent PSAs later on? Well, thanks for the question,
- 32:15Tim, they did, and you'll notice that with so many of the
- 32:24Yours truly Johnny Dollar episodes, we're dealing with armed forces, radio services,
- 32:31radio and television services versions of the program. And part of the reason for
- 32:37that is that those were continued to be reused overseas places where getting American television
- 32:45was impractical and for people who couldn't enjoy that. We've had a few programs
- 32:52even that have had a little hints of the seventies like from the FBN networks.
- 32:59Armed Forces Radio and Television is probably one of the great preservers of old
- 33:05time radio, just because they continue to need those programs longer. In fact,
- 33:09AFRTS actually went so far as to purchase programs from other countries. There
- 33:16exists both South African and British programs that were played as well, and we
- 33:23have, of course had listeners who had their first exposure to old time radio
- 33:30over well as children on a military basis. Now, speaking of the recordings
- 33:36themselves, I should mention one thing, and you'll notice there were more intermension
- 33:40intermissions in the program with three acts in Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. And
- 33:46once we get into some of the network broadcast of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar,
- 33:52we'll start to hear a lot more ads in the program, but with
- 33:55a new scheme in mind where they don't sell one sponsor the entire show,
- 34:02but different sponsors, so you might have like doctor Pepper is a sponsor of
- 34:07one, soap company is a sponsor of another. And eventually it gets to
- 34:12the point where in the course of the half hour program there are five separate
- 34:16commercial breaks, which is really not all that good for the narrative, but
- 34:22it was one of those things they did try to keep radio drama afloat,
- 34:25it no longer being a large enough concern to generate one sponsor to pay for
- 34:31the whole program. Another comment on episode fourteen forty one, which was the
- 34:37Smoky Sleeper matter from Bobby Lee, who says, I will always remember this
- 34:43episode anytime I go to buy furniture, and I will try my best to
- 34:46forget this episode when I'm listening and picturing are Johnny and my imagination during the
- 34:53story. I just don't think of him dressing that way. Apparently bo Tie
- 34:59not a with Bobby Lee. Then I do have also an email from Debbie
- 35:04about Johnny Dollar in general, who says, I love the show and especially
- 35:07yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. I remember hearing you mentioned it sometime that
- 35:12you plan to make separate feeds for the earlier Johnny Dollar episodes. Did you
- 35:15ever do this? If so, how can I find them in iTunes?
- 35:19If not? Yes, please, I didn't discover your show until I have
- 35:22been going for years, and I'd like to hear the earlier Johnny Dollar episode.
- 35:25Thanks for the work you do well, Debbie. I have not gotten
- 35:30around to it. That's one of those things. I'm going to put that
- 35:35on my definite to do list. When I get a week of vacation coming
- 35:40up in January, we'll spend some time working on creating that particular feature.
- 35:51And thanks for the reminder. Things get so busy with everything else that we're
- 35:55doing, both on the show, on books, etc. At a few
- 35:59things. Occasionally only slipt the old noggin, So I truly appreciate your comment.
- 36:02Well, that'll do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with
- 36:07Dragnet and join us next Friday for another episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.
