- 0:26Speaker 1: a guest on the Adam Schefter podcast and he was
- 0:30Speaker 1: asked the question that many Saints fans have wondered aloud.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Asked chatted about add barrooms by the watercooler family gatherings.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Would Drew Brees ever have a role? Could he ever
- 0:44Speaker 1: join the New Orleans Saints coaching staff. Here's what he said.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I don't know. We'll see you know. Look, it's it's
- 0:51Speaker 2: in my blood. It always will be.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I'm always going to be a Saint, and so whether
- 0:57Speaker 3: it's direct or indirect, you know, I yes, I will
- 1:00Speaker 3: always say we you know, that's that's my team, my organization.
- 1:05Speaker 2: From the perspective that I just I take so much
- 1:07Speaker 2: pride and what we built.
- 1:08Speaker 3: And what we accomplished, and I'm always a resource to
- 1:14Speaker 3: help and I'll always be there to support.
- 1:16Speaker 4: He didn't say no.
- 1:19Speaker 1: The reason, there's two reasons why I think that's a
- 1:22Speaker 1: terrible idea. Number one is first and foremost is the
- 1:28Speaker 1: time commitment. Drew Brees retired and then try his hand
- 1:34Speaker 1: at TV, But part of the reason he stopped doing
- 1:38Speaker 1: TV after one year was the time commit I mean
- 1:43Speaker 1: he remember he was doing studio work for NBC for
- 1:46Speaker 1: the NFL and he was calling noted end games. So
- 1:49Speaker 1: Brees and his family live in San Diego, and so
- 1:52Speaker 1: then he's flying to South Bend for production meetings and
- 1:55Speaker 1: then calling a game on Saturday, and then flying to
- 1:57Speaker 1: New York for the NFL on Sundays and Sunday Night football,
- 2:02Speaker 1: then maybe flying home on Monday, and so then you're
- 2:03Speaker 1: home with a little jet lag, and you have Tuesday
- 2:06Speaker 1: and then guess what, you're hitting the road again. It
- 2:08Speaker 1: ain't that much different than when you're playing football. So
- 2:11Speaker 1: that's number one is just the time commitment if you're
- 2:13Speaker 1: going to be a coach, because it's no different than
- 2:16Speaker 1: if you're a player. The physicality is different, but your
- 2:18Speaker 1: time commitments.
- 2:19Speaker 4: No different. That's number one. Number two.
- 2:23Speaker 1: That is the best way possible to ruin the fan
- 2:27Speaker 1: BASEES relationship with Drew breath is let him coach because
- 2:32Speaker 1: and listen, I understand, like he is the greatest player
- 2:37Speaker 1: in the history of the organization. He will always be.
- 2:41Speaker 4: One or one A.
- 2:43Speaker 1: That's only to leave room to say, what if someone
- 2:45Speaker 1: comes behind him and is amazing? And plenty of organizations
- 2:50Speaker 1: have have had that, Like in New England, they'll never
- 2:53Speaker 1: have another Tom Brady. They don't have a quarterback that'll
- 2:55Speaker 1: come and win six Super Bowls? But what if they
- 2:56Speaker 1: have someone comes and wins three Super Bowls? Were they
- 2:59Speaker 1: number two? Or they one? Be figured it out however
- 3:01Speaker 1: you want to say. The point is Freeze will always
- 3:04Speaker 1: be deified in New Orleans. However, you can truly love someone,
- 3:10Speaker 1: but there can be friction. I mean this, How is
- 3:15Speaker 1: that any different than in a marriage. You can love
- 3:18Speaker 1: your spouse, of course, I mean you would do everything
- 3:20Speaker 1: for your family, you die for your spouse, but sometimes
- 3:23Speaker 1: you argue over what you're gonna do for dinner. You
- 3:26Speaker 1: can have major arguments about finances or whatever. Who knows
- 3:31Speaker 1: you understand. I mean, it's just a life or at
- 3:34Speaker 1: the office, whatever. And the thing that's undeniable is an
- 3:41Speaker 1: unavoidable is in professional sports you will face adversity like
- 3:46Speaker 1: there is going to be. There will be things that
- 3:49Speaker 1: go badly just how it happens, and so fans rightfully
- 3:55Speaker 1: complain and direct criticism at coaches. And I would hate
- 4:01Speaker 1: to see that part of a relationship with Breeze and
- 4:04Speaker 1: the Saints be strained, if that ever happened.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Now.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Breeze was also asked by Schefter if the Saints because
- 4:10Speaker 1: he said I'll always be there to be a resource.
- 4:12Speaker 1: But he was asked by by Schefter if the Saints
- 4:15Speaker 1: have ever asked him, like for feedback or input on
- 4:18Speaker 1: a higher.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Uh not feedback.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I mean, look, I always have conversations. I have conversations
- 4:23Speaker 3: with with everybody in that organization about any number of topics.
- 4:26Speaker 2: So yes, yes, hey what are we looking for?
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yes, you know, look and and I and I lend
- 4:32Speaker 3: I lend my my you know, expertise or recommendations when asked.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm curious what Breeze would think about this hire, whoever
- 4:42Speaker 1: it's going to be. I have no doubt. There's a
- 4:45Speaker 1: part of the conversation where Drew Brees is going to
- 4:47Speaker 1: be supportive of whoever the coaches.
- 4:49Speaker 4: You just heard him say it.
- 4:49Speaker 1: He'll always say we he takes ownership in great pride
- 4:52Speaker 1: in being part of the organization, which we all agree.
- 4:54Speaker 1: There's nothing there's nothing wrong with that whatsoever, you know.
- 4:58Speaker 1: But I am curious what his thoughts are about where
- 5:02Speaker 1: things are because the Yeah, there's a strange juxtaposition of
- 5:12Speaker 1: what the Saints did basically everything they leveraged as far
- 5:18Speaker 1: as the future of the organization to go all in
- 5:21Speaker 1: to win Withdrew. They didn't get back there, and now
- 5:25Speaker 1: they're in this terrible situation by and large because of that.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Would you do it again? Of course you would.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I mean to say it often, it's no different than
- 5:31Speaker 1: what Denver did with Peyton Manning. They went all in
- 5:35Speaker 1: and they didn't make the playoffs for a decade after
- 5:39Speaker 1: Peyton Manning. They finally got back this year with bo
- 5:43Speaker 1: Nicks as a rookie. And boy, they went through a
- 5:45Speaker 1: lot of iterations. They went through different quarterbacks, They had
- 5:47Speaker 1: draft busts. I mean, remember who's that tall guy from Memphis?
- 5:52Speaker 1: Remember that guy that they drafted in the first round.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Remember that guy was his name, Paxton Lynch, remember him.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Like Denver drafted Paxton Lynch in the first round, Denver
- 6:03Speaker 1: had Brock Osweiler, you know what I mean. Like they've
- 6:06Speaker 1: gone through it. The Saints played Denver when they had
- 6:09Speaker 1: a practice squad receiver playing quarterback.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Now that was Covid. It was different.
- 6:13Speaker 1: But the point is they leveraged everything to win with
- 6:17Speaker 1: Peyton Manning and they did. They made it to two
- 6:18Speaker 1: Super Bowls and they won one of them. But they
- 6:20Speaker 1: do it again, of course they would. The Saints did
- 6:22Speaker 1: the same thing at the end of Breeze's career when
- 6:25Speaker 1: they hit on that twenty seventeen draft class and then
- 6:28Speaker 1: Nolan no call happened, and then every year it was
- 6:31Speaker 1: all in kicking the can down the road, restructuring deals,
- 6:37Speaker 1: to do whatever they had to do to make sure
- 6:39Speaker 1: that they had the best roster possible to give you
- 6:41Speaker 1: a Brizes a chance to win a Super Bowl before
- 6:43Speaker 1: he rode off into the sunset, and it didn't happen.
- 6:45Speaker 1: They got close. It doesn't mean it was the wrong decision,
- 6:50Speaker 1: but the reality is, you've got to understand that window
- 6:54Speaker 1: is closed and it's been closed. And everyone, me, you,
- 6:58Speaker 1: all of us have understood that for years now, except
- 7:04Speaker 1: for the people in the front office who keep going
- 7:06Speaker 1: back to the ATM like they're busting at the crabs table,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and they keep going back to the ATM to get
- 7:13Speaker 1: more cash to go try to win it back, and
- 7:14Speaker 1: they keep just digging the hole deeper, and it's just
- 7:21Speaker 1: making it worse. And now here you are, you're in
- 7:24Speaker 1: a spot where nobody wants your job. I mean you're down.
- 7:32Speaker 1: You're down to your list of candidates or Kellen Moore,
- 7:38Speaker 1: Anthony Weaver, Mike Kafka and Darren Rizzy. That's your list,
- 7:44Speaker 1: like let that sink in The Saints, which for a
- 7:49Speaker 1: period had won more games over that period than any
- 7:53Speaker 1: other franchise in the NFL. Are Now this, I mean,
- 7:59Speaker 1: you're a pilot rubble all the things we've talked about.
- 8:05Speaker 1: You got an eight, you're the four fourth oldest roster,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you got tons of bad contracts, you have the most
- 8:10Speaker 1: dead money. Next year you get the most, you have
- 8:13Speaker 1: the least cap space, the most uh money money over
- 8:16Speaker 1: the cap.
- 8:18Speaker 4: It's you don't have a quarterback.
- 8:20Speaker 1: You're in a terrible spot, and nobody wants that job
- 8:23Speaker 1: because they understand they're set up to fail. So who
- 8:27Speaker 1: wants to take that job and fail. You got to
- 8:31Speaker 1: take someone who has nothing to lose or has enough
- 8:34Speaker 1: of a long tail to get another opportunity somewhere else.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Won't be Drew Brees could be. Mike Kafka.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Mike calf gave an interview uh to otb out at
- 8:46Speaker 1: at on Radio Row at the Senior Bowl, and this
- 8:51Speaker 1: is really good. He sat down with T Bob and
- 8:52Speaker 1: he talked about the interview process with the New Orleans Saints.
- 8:55Speaker 4: It's pretty open about it.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Very well run Mickey and his staff. I mean there
- 8:59Speaker 5: were five or six guys in the room. You know,
- 9:00Speaker 5: the first one was a zoom, so just kind of
- 9:02Speaker 5: get to know, Yeah, pretty easy conversation, low level kind
- 9:05Speaker 5: of philosophy stuff. Then we flew out a few days
- 9:08Speaker 5: ago and I was in New Orleans, and you know,
- 9:10Speaker 5: we were able to kind of sit face to face
- 9:11Speaker 5: and talk about all of those principles and all those
- 9:14Speaker 5: standards and your practice schedules and how you're going to
- 9:16Speaker 5: respond to certain things throughout the year and the off
- 9:18Speaker 5: season in season, different players, your experiences, so it's very
- 9:23Speaker 5: well rounded. Every interview I've been on has been different.
- 9:26Speaker 5: This one just happened to be a little bit more
- 9:28Speaker 5: face to face and a little bit more details in
- 9:30Speaker 5: terms of, like, you know, your scheduling and just there
- 9:32Speaker 5: are some scenarios that put you in and they want
- 9:34Speaker 5: to see how you respond.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Mike Cafe, he's impressive, impressive young guy who's likely going
- 9:40Speaker 1: to be a head coach. I don't know if it's
- 9:41Speaker 1: going to be this go around in New Orleans, but
- 9:43Speaker 1: I want to keep an eye on
