- 0:00Ready to rock?
- 0:01Yeah.
- 0:01Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04We are here on the bus with Rudy Gunn.
- 0:06Rudy, welcome to the show, brother.
- 0:08Man, it's good to see you, buddy.
- 0:10Yeah.
- 0:10It's good to see you.
- 0:10Yeah.
- 0:11Well, it's good to see you again.
- 0:12Right?
- 0:12What a crazy week, man.
- 0:13What a crazy week.
- 0:14Absolutely insane.
- 0:15So you're nominated for a couple of Josie's this this week.
- 0:19I know you accepted one on behalf of another friend of yours, but you also won one.
- 0:24We did.
- 0:24We we won expressive verse video of the year, which was for our music video, Make Canada
- 0:30Great Again, about the cost of living in Canada.
- 0:33And basically, the video shows all the homeless encampments around Canada, following a homeless
- 0:40guy around throughout the scene of of what's happening in Canada right now.
- 0:44Cost of living is absolutely crazy to the point where people are coming to Canada for a better
- 0:48life.
- 0:48They wanna live the the Canadian or the American dream so to speak and they end up
- 0:54either moving back to the country that they came from as a refugee because it's better
- 0:59there than the cost of living in Canada.
- 1:02They end up in the street and they don't know what to do and it's just we've got encampments
- 1:05you know near my house 80 tents or more in multiple areas.
- 1:10That's crazy and you're in Suburban Toronto.
- 1:12Mean
- 1:13Yeah.
- 1:13I'm like an hour an hour from Toronto right now.
- 1:16I'm back and forth between Ontario and Alberta, but we're we're based out of Ontario now
- 1:22because the the scene there.
- 1:24We just got so many places that we can play and and and grow as an Alberta's
- 1:27a lot like the Midwest US.
- 1:29Everything's really really far in between and not a lot in between those areas.
- 1:33Like if you want to go play a show in Alberta and I used to do it all the time, I'd have to
- 1:37drive often six seven hours to get to the next gig.
- 1:41So when you're you're rolling in in the afternoon, you're setting up doing your sound
- 1:44check, then you play your show, you get done your concert at one or two, now you gotta tear
- 1:49down, you you get out of there with your crew at like four in the morning, and then you gotta
- 1:53drive six, seven, eight, nine, ten hours to the next gig to do it all again, and all you're
- 1:59doing is you're you're living off of junk food and rock stars or energy drinks.
- 2:03And
- 2:04Or Tim Hortons coffee.
- 2:05Shout out
- 2:05to Tim Hortons.
- 2:06Tim Hortons coffee.
- 2:07I I brought Bubba coffee just to get the Man,
- 2:10I appreciate it.
- 2:11The Canadian experience right here on on the bus.
- 2:13Well, after the night I had last night, getting woken up by security to have to move the bus, I
- 2:18appreciate it.
- 2:20We had to spend some nighttime on the bus after the Josie's, though, and I wanted to make sure
- 2:24to mention the memory.
- 2:26We had your guitar player, Will, on here.
- 2:28You guys played a song sitting right here on this couch, and we got to film that.
- 2:32I thought that was really cool.
- 2:33But we found some pretty cool stuff out about the bus that night while we were tinkering
- 2:37around.
- 2:38Yeah.
- 2:38Will's like, hey, man.
- 2:40This this thing says the ultimate horn.
- 2:42What does this button do?
- 2:43And he hits it, and the bus starts blaring on the road again on the outside of the bus
- 2:48through speakers while we're in a parking lot.
- 2:51But leading up to, like, meeting you at the Josie's, and we're doing a little interview
- 2:55thingy there.
- 2:56And then later at night, we're at a bar, and we run into you, and we run into your sidekick boo
- 3:02boo there.
- 3:03And
- 3:05we're chatting, and you go, yeah.
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:06We're on
- 3:07on George Jones' old bus.
- 3:09And I was like, oh, that's cool.
- 3:11And so I said, hey, man.
- 3:13Like, can we check that out?
- 3:14That'd be kinda cool cool thing to check out.
- 3:16And you know, like, yeah.
- 3:17No problem.
- 3:17Follow me.
- 3:19So we start following you out of the parking lot, across the road, into the Gaylord Opryland
- 3:25parking lot, but it's fenced off.
- 3:27It's blocked off.
- 3:28There's nothing there and it's foggy as hell like Yeah.
- 3:30Was crazy fog Sunday night.
- 3:32The craziest fog that Tennessee has ever seen probably in a long long time.
- 3:38So we see nothing but a fence that's barricaded off and we're walking into this parking lot
- 3:44that's just misty.
- 3:46And my guitar player Will goes, man, are these guys gonna murder us?
- 3:49Like, who are these dudes that you found?
- 3:51I'm like, I don't I don't know.
- 3:52Like, maybe.
- 3:53So Nobody said how I won the content creator of the year award.
- 3:56The the women love the love the crazy shit.
- 3:59Like, murder stories.
- 4:00You you didn't dress as Dexter for Halloween, I hope, man.
- 4:03But dude, so we're walking through this parking lot and then the bus kind of appears through
- 4:08the fog and we're like, that's the coolest the coolest visual and experience, know, of life to
- 4:15see George Jones' bus appear through the fog like
- 4:18Just emerge through the mist.
- 4:19Just such an epic I
- 4:20I wish I would have the neons when we came walking up too.
- 4:23It would have been awesome.
- 4:24But Yeah.
- 4:25Well, I got look.
- 4:26I do have a video of walking up to the bus and and we'll we'll snip that in.
- 4:30I'll send it over to you well.
- 4:31But it was it was cool.
- 4:32And then we got on the bus and we ended up playing a song on the bus, Will and I, a song
- 4:37that that we rode called shoulda known better.
- 4:40And, you know, we started realizing how many people have sat on this seat, not just George
- 4:46Jones maybe writing a song and talking to people and all that stuff, but how many people
- 4:51have sat on the seat in the exact position while George Jones is sitting in the chair
- 4:55right there listening and going, man, let me hear what you got or what song you got
- 5:00Yeah.
- 5:01Can we play a song for you?
- 5:03That happened on this exact couch.
- 5:05Probably a lot of things happen on this couch I don't wanna know about.
- 5:08But that's one thing that's cool.
- 5:09I'm like, maybe some of those guys became legends at one point and, you know, who are who
- 5:15are they?
- 5:16What's the nineties country stars at that time.
- 5:18This is a '95 bus, so we kinda know roundabout what time that it made, and he's the only owner
- 5:22of this bus at that time.
- 5:24Right?
- 5:24So you think about some of these nineties countries people that were coming up that, you
- 5:28know, jumped at the opportunity to come and spend a few minutes with George on the bus.
- 5:31Absolutely.
- 5:31So we're not necessarily doing anything new here.
- 5:35We're just capturing it, and it's us telling our stories now instead of them telling theirs.
- 5:40And I think that's just it's so cool what we've been able to do here.
- 5:43Shout out to angelcarsusa.org for for letting us I mean, bring this down here.
- 5:49This has been a wild experience from top to bottom.
- 5:51Red carpet at the Josie's was insane.
- 5:53I mean, you got to step up there on the stage not once, but twice.
- 5:56Granted, there was only once for yourself, but you still got to stand in that circle and
- 6:00deliver a speech.
- 6:02And it just was something we'll never forget.
- 6:05It was wild.
- 6:06And big big congratulations to Ranchmas in Calgary for winning the live music venue of the
- 6:11year as well.
- 6:12You know, all the nominations were all American bars, and that was the only Canadian bar that
- 6:16got nominated.
- 6:17But they've been around fifty two years
- 6:18Right.
- 6:19As a massive it's it's basically doubles as a museum.
- 6:23It's massive this bar and I used to work for them.
- 6:26So when they found out they were nominated, they messaged me and said, hey Rudy, if we win
- 6:30can you accept this award for us?
- 6:31I'm only one.
- 6:32I was like, man, I'm part of that history, you know.
- 6:34I was part of that bar at one point.
- 6:36So it was really, really cool to be able to accept that for them as well.
- 6:40But first walking onto the Opry stage for my own award, just walking on that stage, I'm
- 6:45pretty sure I said, holy shhh.
- 6:47You know, like, to the lady on the stage, and it was wild just walking on to the Opry stage
- 6:53and then standing in a circle, you know, the unbroken circle, and just looking at all those
- 7:00seats, how many thousands or millions of people have sat in those those seats and how many
- 7:05legends have stood on that stage on that exact circle both at Howled Ground.
- 7:09Both at the Ryman and at the Grand Ole Opry.
- 7:11You know, it's it's just it was incredible to stand there.
- 7:15I got that that look I think that everybody's talking about.
- 7:18And I was just trying not to shit my pants really, man.
- 7:21That's that's what that's what it all came down to.
- 7:25No.
- 7:25And talk about how carrying that energy now and carrying this momentum into the rest of, you
- 7:31know, not just 2025, but into '26 and having this now Josie music award winner title with
- 7:37you, what that's gonna mean for your career now moving forward?
- 7:40I think it's definitely, like, some leverage.
- 7:43You know, we launched our own our own publishing company for music that I'm writing
- 7:47with my co writers as a catalog and showcase to other artists if they wanna listen to it, but
- 7:51just to be able to put on there like a award winning writer.
- 7:54Because I wrote that song as well.
- 7:56It was just not not just a music video.
- 7:58I wrote the song.
- 7:59And Will played every instrument on that on that song except for drums, Rick Carrero played
- 8:04the drums on it.
- 8:05A big shout out to Rick as well for making that come alive.
- 8:08And, yeah, man.
- 8:10It it it was How cool
- 8:11for Will to be here with to to be there for whole, you know, the whole experience and to
- 8:17get to see, you know, his song and the music video, you know, win and being able to take
- 8:23that back.
- 8:23And Will's a little more soft spoken guy than you are.
- 8:26Right?
- 8:26So I don't know if he'll necessarily be going around telling everybody about it, but it's
- 8:30gotta be a cool even though you're not up there, you know, giving the speech and
- 8:34accepting the award, it's gotta be a really cool feeling to be part
- 8:37of it.
- 8:37He was definitely part of it, and I appreciate him coming down.
- 8:40He actually flew in to be here with me for the award show, and he's driving back with me
- 8:45today.
- 8:46But, man, this guy's on the road with me all the time.
- 8:49One of my best friends.
- 8:50Just an awesome, awesome dude, and I'm so happy that he's part of my team.
- 8:54And, you know, we got a a great team of writers, a great a great band.
- 8:58You know, big shout out to all the guys in the band as well and that are on the road with me
- 9:02every night and and then hashing it out.
- 9:04And, man, what a wild experience just from the the Opry walking on the stage to walking
- 9:10through the mist to George Jones bus and not getting murdered.
- 9:13And then where do we end up after dude?
- 9:16Waffle House.
- 9:16We we end
- 9:17up Where else would you end up in Tennessee after the gig?
- 9:20There's nothing open in the middle of the night except for a friggin' Waffle House.
- 9:25So we're sitting there and I've seen things on the internet about Waffle House.
- 9:31I've never been to a Waffle House.
- 9:33The American what is it?
- 9:34The American breakfast, the American dream, whatever they call it.
- 9:37The American experience for sure.
- 9:39The lady behind the counter, one
- 9:42of the waitresses started yelling, hey, we're we're down to one roll of toilet paper.
- 9:46So if y'all gotta go to the shitter, you gotta go to the man shitter because we're down to one
- 9:51roll of toilet paper.
- 9:52Y'all gotta share.
- 9:53And I was like, is this like a skid?
- 9:55Like, is this part of like, you know, Chuck E.
- 9:57Cheese?
- 9:57They got the dancing mouse.
- 9:58This the thing they do at Waffle House?
- 10:00Like, what
- 10:01is this?
- 10:01And she's I'm like, not joking.
- 10:03And I got the second part of it on video.
- 10:05The first part, we're dying laughing.
- 10:08The waffles, like, covered in I don't know what it was covered in.
- 10:11Some kind of syrup.
- 10:13No.
- 10:13It was Probably imported from Canada.
- 10:16Well,
- 10:17let's see.
- 10:17Me what they are.
- 10:19We'll probably get our syrup made here in America.
- 10:21Give me a waffle on a dirty plate, baby.
- 10:23Let's No.
- 10:25And and honestly, if we didn't record it all, nobody believe us.
- 10:28Nobody would believe this story.
- 10:30I mean, you know, sound like an insane person.
- 10:32Right?
- 10:32When I'm like, yeah.
- 10:32Drove from South Dakota to Wisconsin to get on George Jones' old tour bus to go work the red
- 10:36carpet at the Grand Ole Opry and to meet all of these artists and to to talk with them and
- 10:41interview them on the bus and to capture these moments and to end up at Waffle House with them
- 10:45and run out of shit tickets.
- 10:46What a thrill that would be though, man.
- 10:48You wouldn't it was pretty I slept most of way, to be honest.
- 10:52I mean, I had driven ten hours from South Dakota, unloaded my stuff into the bus, got on
- 10:56the bus, and we had a professional driver drive the bus down for us.
- 11:00So I jumped in the back and crashed out, woke up when he stopped to pee, and just kept
- 11:05moving, man.
- 11:06Just kept moving.
- 11:07So we had, like, a twenty four hour journey to get down here to land on the I mean, I've
- 11:10pretty much been on the Opry, you know, Opryland property here this entire time, and
- 11:14I've gotten away and gone and checked out Broadway.
- 11:16I mean, I saw Broadway on Halloween night of all nights.
- 11:19Right?
- 11:19To kinda walk down and to capture that moment.
- 11:22If I didn't have all the video, you would not believe me.
- 11:25No.
- 11:26It was crazy.
- 11:27I was dressed up as the cow from Chick fil A with the the sign that said
- 11:31I saw you.
- 11:31Eat more chicken.
- 11:32You saw me?
- 11:33I probably got you on tape, man.
- 11:35Oh, man.
- 11:36I didn't I couldn't even stop.
- 11:37It was so much data to take in just as, like, as a human being that it was like, no.
- 11:41I can't even do this.
- 11:42And I wasn't necessarily trying to hang out in the bars.
- 11:44I was there to work.
- 11:45I was there to capture the moment and see as much as I could.
- 11:48And, you know, after doing a lap, like, had to go take a lap around Bridgestone just to, like,
- 11:52woah.
- 11:53That was a lot of energy in a short amount
- 11:54of time.
- 11:54I've been traveling all day.
- 11:56We landed here at 6AM on Friday morning.
- 11:58Right?
- 11:59So I it's like, I needed a minute to get away from the hustle and bustle and then came back
- 12:03and shoot some more.
- 12:04Yeah, incredible energy in Nashville this weekend.
- 12:07And they said it was kind of a slow weekend.
- 12:09I think a few weeks ago, they told me when Posties opened and Post what was that?
- 12:12They had 80,000 people on the streets.
- 12:14That is crazy.
- 12:15I was at Posty's last night, and man, the sound system in there was incredible.
- 12:18Yeah.
- 12:18Just Sounded good.
- 12:19I stopped
- 12:20in yesterday afternoon.
- 12:21The LED wall in there in the back of the stage goes to the top of the ceiling.
- 12:25It must be like a $34,000,000 LED wall just just on the stage and just got
- 12:30the money.
- 12:30It's all good.
- 12:31Man, it's as an entertainer, Mike, I want that, man.
- 12:35Like, get me one of these stages.
- 12:36That'd be that'd be cool.
- 12:37Yeah.
- 12:38Let me on this one for sure at the very least.
- 12:40Right?
- 12:40Absolutely.
- 12:41Absolutely.
- 12:41Well, hopefully, can use that that win at the Joe season.
- 12:44Fact The that you've been on the Grand Ole Opry stage now, and you're familiar with this.
- 12:48You're an award winning songwriter.
- 12:50You know, you're an award winning music video producer as well because I think that's what I
- 12:54would call you.
- 12:55Maybe you weren't behind the camera.
- 12:56I don't know if you were or not, Yeah.
- 12:58I shot every shot.
- 12:59I edited every shot.
- 13:00Incredible, man.
- 13:01Everything's incredible.
- 13:03Yeah.
- 13:03I always forget you're an AV guy.
- 13:05So You would.
- 13:06I wanted to make sure the vision that I had in my mind was getting through on tape, and the
- 13:12only way that I could get that out of my head onto tape was by filming and editing that
- 13:17myself exactly the way I envisioned it.
- 13:19Incredible.
- 13:19And
- 13:19you can find it on YouTube, Make Canada Great Again.
- 13:22This is a music video.
- 13:23Yeah.
- 13:23And it's not it's not a political thing left right.
- 13:26It's literally the cost of living just so insane
- 13:28Right.
- 13:28To the point that that North American dream is is is kinda disappeared.
- 13:32You know?
- 13:33Yeah.
- 13:33Well, and it's been a long time coming that that it's kinda been on that track, and now
- 13:37we're all acutely aware of it.
- 13:39Right?
- 13:39And but more people could be more aware of it that it's not just tough for you at home.
- 13:43It's tough for everybody right now.
- 13:45And the only way that we're gonna pull ourselves out of it is together.
- 13:48And I think that's really what your music video and what your song's all about is that, like,
- 13:53hey.
- 13:53We have to do this.
- 13:54Nobody's coming to save us and do this for us.
- 13:56Here's the problems right out in front of your face.
- 13:59Yeah.
- 14:00How are we gonna fix it now?
- 14:01And and that's really the time in in our lives that we're coming to and the time in our
- 14:07country, man.
- 14:08We gotta save both of our countries.
- 14:09The United States and Canada should be a lot closer than we are now.
- 14:13I know, you know, politics being what it is and the the political head figures in both of our
- 14:19countries being what they are, that it's the people.
- 14:23It's me and you that are bringing it back together and people like us.
- 14:26We're the ones that are gonna make the difference in in the sense that we're in
- 14:30control of our own lives.
- 14:31You know?
- 14:31It doesn't matter who is in charge of of where, who's in charge of what country.
- 14:36No government's ever gonna take care of you.
- 14:38Whether they're on the left, whether on the right, nobody's gonna take care of you.
- 14:41The only one that could take care of you and your family is you.
- 14:44So you gotta go out there every day and do the best that you can to make it happen because
- 14:49it's up to you, man.
- 14:50Like like people say, if it's not up to me, it's you know, if it if it is to be, it's up to
- 14:55me.
- 14:55I don't know if you've ever heard that saying, but it is.
- 14:58Like, you're the one that's gonna make the difference for your family's future.
- 15:02Nobody else is gonna take care of you.
- 15:03No doubt.
- 15:04So No
- 15:04doubt, man.
- 15:05Control, man.
- 15:06Rudy, what's coming up next for you?
- 15:07I I mean, I'm sure you're playing every weekend and out there on the shows.
- 15:10You got some new music coming.
- 15:11I know you're doing a lot of writing, and we're doing a little writing while you were down here
- 15:14as well.
- 15:16I I know you didn't get quite as many as you wanted to.
- 15:19No.
- 15:19But we got last time when we get
- 15:21over quantity maybe is what the theme was.
- 15:24I wanted to write, you know, 15 songs while down here, but we just got so busy networking
- 15:29and meeting people and ending up at Waffle Houses and on tour buses and meeting guys in
- 15:34parking lots that were foggy.
- 15:36You know?
- 15:37I I don't know who I'm talking about here, but it just we got so we got so busy that we did
- 15:43write a song yesterday with with Wiley Seiler, David Sullivan, and Will wrote a song with
- 15:52them, and we might pitch that to somebody like Gary Allen.
- 15:55Very, very cool tune.
- 15:57But, yeah, when I get back, I've got 50 some songs to write now
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:02That we're gonna, you know, gonna work on and produce the tracks for and get those pitch
- 16:07demos ready and Yeah.
- 16:08Think that catalog is stacked up there.
- 16:09Whether I record a couple of them or or whether we get other artists to record them, that's
- 16:14cool.
- 16:14We we got Nashville North Publishing to to put that entire catalog on there.
- 16:18So Incredible.
- 16:19Could check that out too.
- 16:20Awesome, man.
- 16:20Yeah.
- 16:21Website for your band and everything too?
- 16:23Rudygunn.com.
- 16:25R u d with two n's.
- 16:26R u d y g u n n.
- 16:28Yeah.
- 16:29Awesome, man.
- 16:29Straight shooter.
- 16:30Well, thanks for everything.
- 16:31We made some memories this weekend, brother.
- 16:33I appreciate you being part of the scene and for being here on the bus again and sharing
- 16:38this moment with us.
- 16:39Alright?
- 16:39It's it's nothing.
- 16:41For me to just sit on the bus by myself doesn't really mean a whole lot to me or anyone else.
- 16:45So it's sharing it with guys like you that appreciate the history that this bus has and
- 16:50appreciate the iconic nature of what we're doing in our own lives.
- 16:54And I think no one embodies that more than you, Rudy.
- 16:56So y'all get home safe to Canada today.
- 16:58Everyone watching at home, that's Rudy Gunn.
- 17:00He is an award winner here at the Josie Music Awards this year.
- 17:04Great guy too.
- 17:05We got to hang out quite a bit.
- 17:07So appreciate you all tapping in with us now, and, keep tuning in.
- 17:11More coming from On the Bus and the Scene projects real soon.
