[crowd noise] [upbeat music] Holy mackerel, folks.
• 0:18
Full Spectrum Cycling Gran Fonduro edition, and, uh, looks like we got a little competition from the DJ in the background for the old, uh, music bed there, folks.
• 0:31
But, uh, we're down here in the old, uh, Illinois Grand Ballroom at the Illinois State Beach Resort and Convention Center. It's beautiful. It's the, uh, Saturday night of the Gran Fonduro. Got, uh...
• 0:46
Well, I'm gonna go counterclockwise this time. T Burger. [laughs] Hey. Got Mr. JK Living. Hey, hey, hey. And just fresh to the m- [laughs] mic, Mr. John Trusty. Oh, wait. You know what? Oh, oh, wait, wait. Hey, let's...
• 0:58
I get it. There we go. Now talk. There's John. Testing, testing. Just had to push the button, folks. Test, test, test, test. He's live. Testing, testing. He's live, m- ladies and gentlemen. He's live. Testing. Sip, boys.
• 1:08
Modern technology is a weird thing. Sip, boys. So, uh, yeah, so here we are. Um, kinda just gonna do a, a quick, uh, thoughts of the day thing here and kinda see where it goes.
• 1:19
We're getting a couple guests on a little bit later and- Yeah... give some stuff away and blah, blah, blah. Yeah. Giddy up. So start with Tony. What do you think? Right. This is a really fun day.
• 1:30
You know, I, as usual, when I go out fat biking, I super overdressed and was a sweaty mess halfway in and learned about zippers. Zippers are good. And I feel way better. For venting. For venting. How about the venue?
• 1:45
What do you think of the convention center here? I like... I would come back here in a heartbeat. Our room is nice. The, the people have been really good to us. The shower outside [coughs] to wash off the bikes is cool.
• 1:58
Um, yeah, I, I, I think this is a great... E- especially, it's an hour from Milwaukee. Right. How... I mean, and what, hour 45 from Madison? I mean, this is a great meeting point. And how far from Chicago?
• 2:12
Like a couple of minutes. Like a couple of minutes. Yeah. Zion, y- you ride your bike here. You don't even think about driving. Yeah. Looking fantastic.
• 2:19
If I'd have known about this place as it is, I probably would've said, "Hey, hon, let's just make a weekend out of it," and just brought her up as well.
• 2:26
Boy, those balcony rooms with the king size bed and the balcony, those are pretty sweet. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I got. And they even have whirlpool rooms. Oh. Oh, I did not know that.
• 2:34
So folks, if you, if you wanna come down here- I got the-... play on the beach... Lake View, but not, not the balcony. I know. That's... I got shammed on that too somehow. No, I got one of those in Port Washington.
• 2:42
W- money well spent. Money well spent. Money well spent. Yeah, for sure. What- Especially after a long, hard ride. So what about you, JK? You guy... You brought, you brought the Kim down. Yes. Yeah.
• 2:52
Uh, it worked out well. This was, like, the first time I've done this part of beach without it being snowpack. Right. Right. Oh, wow. So it was, like, the same terrain, but different.
• 3:03
Now I can't wait to ride it in snowpack. Oh, yeah. 'Cause I've never ridden in snowpack. You know how beaches are. Every time it's a different ride, which is what's really cool. Yeah. Yeah.
• 3:10
Even though, I mean, from the resort to where we turned around and back was a little over three miles probably. Something like that, yeah. But still, you know, it's a great, great to ride on sand. Yeah. Yeah.
• 3:21
And this is one of the few places left on Lake Michigan you can do it right now. Exactly. And, and there's a lot of sand out there. It's great.
• 3:27
I think we- There's crushed, you know, crushed, like, shelly type stuff, and then deep sand, and then... Yeah, it, the, the... it's great riding today. Some, some quick, some quicksand- Gonna...
• 3:36
I had a lot of people lowering their tire pressure. I'm like- Uh, yeah... "You should lower your tire pressure. Those are way too hard." Yeah. I should have listened to you.
• 3:42
[laughs] I tried to- You can always put the air back in later. Yeah. I t- I tried to just find the happy medium.
• 3:48
I d- it was like I didn't wanna be all flatty, 'cause I know I did that one, on one ride, and it was- It's good on the beach. It w- w- Bad on the pavement. Yeah.
• 3:57
[laughs] Well, that's the thing, 'cause I know that's always how it would end. It would be like, "Okay, stop. Okay, one, two, three, and we're going." I'm like, "Oh." No, I'm not. Nope. Certainly had the, uh- [laughs]
• 4:07
... certainly had- Not too fast... certainly had Steel Force One here doing a demo earlier in the day, uh, with some Wednesdays and some ice cream trucks. And, uh, he had a really nice- Oh, so-...
• 4:16
little compressor on there. You could've just aired up a little bit. Fine. Oh, that's a great, you know... He didn't have any prickly pear- No... ice cream trucks, so. I don't... I think they're too dear still.
• 4:26
I think they, they- I-... still have the last year's green because the prickly pears are flying out of the warehouse. It's a... It... I'm just g- it's the most beautiful color bicycle I've ever seen. Wow.
• 4:37
The moment you brought the... When I went into the shop and saw those hanging, I'm like, "Oh, like, that's the- The music swell... prettiest bike ever." Yeah. Like- Just one look...
• 4:46
speaking of swell music, what's the- And I fell so hard... DJ? Right on, man. I d- I, I didn't get his name yet. We'll get- Oh. Oh... we'll, we'll find him. DJ Nice. Yeah. DJ Nice. That's what his name is. All right.
• 4:55
Very good. So Mr. Trusty, um, you are riding a kind of an interesting bike. Um, and you wrote a nice story, which we will have on the website here in the not too distant future.
• 5:07
Um, it is an RSD Sergeant version three, right? Correct. And you've set it up a couple different ways. Uh, today you had the four inch tires on it. Correct. Tw- And the rigid fork. Yep.
• 5:20
Give us a little kinda quick impression about it. Uh, w- it's a ripper. Um, it's a type of bike that takes me back to my Kona Chute days, where it's an overgrown BMX bike through and through. Nice.
• 5:33
It just really encourage you to go fast, take the g- blinds, you know, take the hits, and if there's some jumps along the way, take the jumps too. It's just the harder you ride it, the more rewarding the bike is to you.
• 5:45
Nice. So. All right. [screaming] All right. Hey, it sounds like, uh, Mr. Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery is going to give away some stuff, so let's take a break here for a second. See what happens.
• 5:58
We're gonna see what happens with this giveaway, and then we're gonna have Mr. Daisy and Mr.
• 6:02
Gomez from Fatbike.com on, and we'll talk a little bit about that and maybe get some of the winners up here and, uh, maybe finish with some John thoughts after we get that [laughs] done a little bit later on the bike.
• 6:13
We'll regroup. All right. We'll regroup in, in- However many minutes it is You're tuned to the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast. All right, DJ Nice, man. Hear him in the background? Yeah, he's, he's throwing it down.
• 6:27
Throwing it down. So you heard- He's packing up, packing in... you heard the big rigmarole with, uh, Mr.
• 6:32
Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery w- uh, revving up the crowd for the drawing for the grand prize of this particular Gran Fonduro, which is an Electra beach cruiser bicycle. And we have with us the lucky- The winner...
• 6:47
the lucky lady. It's me. Michelle won this fantastic beach cruiser bicycle from Zion Cyclery. Electra, beautiful. Matched her dress, folks. This is- It, it, it- It is... does. It's kind of a champagne color.
• 6:58
There'll be a picture on the page. Mm-hmm. Yeah, we're definitely gonna have to have a picture on the old show notes. Oh, fantastic. Yep, yep. Yep, yep. It works really well.
• 7:05
So this was your first fat bike event on sand, is that correct? Correct, yeah.
• 7:10
So I've had a ice cream truck for a while, and I've ridden it on snow plenty of times, so this is my first time on the beach, and it was very excellent bike for the beach, and it was a lot of fun.
• 7:19
How do you compare, like, riding on sand versus snow? What did you find similar or different about the experience? Um, I guess the sand is a bit slipperier, right?
• 7:28
But, like, with the fat bike it really didn't matter, [laughs] especially with the ice cream truck. You know, like, the tires are just, like, humongous. The five-inchers really, yep. Yeah.
• 7:35
[laughs] It's definitely the, uh, the large size of the fat bikes. It's a five-inch platform, so you got really, really big tires. Did you mess with your tire pressure at all?
• 7:44
Yeah, I took it down, like, quite a bit, but yeah. Oh, yeah. Which helps obviously, yeah. Yeah, when you start seeing the sidewalls of the tire wrinkle like a drag racing car- Yeah. [laughs]... it's like, yeah.
• 7:52
That's when you're ready for sand. It's starting to work pretty good right now. [laughs] Ready for sand, yep, yeah. So, and then, uh, yeah.
• 7:58
It, I mean, this is one of the last vestiges of the beach on Lake Michigan right now, so. Mm-hmm. There's some excellent spots to ride sand if you liked it, though. Like up by Wausau. Okay. There's, um, Sand Creek
• 8:10
has a fat bike course that's sand. Oh, is there one here? Yeah. It's, like, kind of a weird area where they don't get a lot of rain. Okay.
• 8:15
Um, and then someday the lake will go down again, and we'll have plenty of beach to ride. Yeah. And I think you'll, you would really dig it. It's so fun, especially- This is a gorgeous area.
• 8:23
Like, coming from Wisconsin, we don't always- It is very pretty... think kindly of this area. I know. But it's great, yeah. Look who decided to show up. I'd totally come. It's really cool.
• 8:31
Like, I would definitely come back here, yeah. So- I will totally come back here. I've never been here before. Yeah. And I think it's just, it's fantastic. It's very, it's super scenic. It's really pretty. Yep.
• 8:39
And, like, there's a lot of ri- I've heard good things about the single track too, which we might get to explore tomorrow- Tomorrow... it sounds like. Yeah. No, we're supposed to. Yeah.
• 8:46
Um, one thing you should consider, too, and anybody else that's listening, is this is super awesome in the winter, too. Mm-hmm. You had experienced on snow, like, is it, like, groomed trails and stuff like that? Mm-hmm.
• 8:56
This is a little different. It's more like the surface of the moon, because the water splashes up, and it makes big mounds of ice. Oh, yeah. Cool. Oh, that's so much fun to ride on.
• 9:02
And then it's got a lot of traction because, for the most part, because the sand gets churned up, too, and it gets mixed in with the snow. Oh, very cool. So it's, um- Yeah, so it's not just like glare ice.
• 9:12
[laughs] Right. And then we- Yeah, cool... and it makes it, and the, the ice will go out into the lake a quarter mile or whatever, so you can ride wherever you want on the shoreline. Oh. It's super awesome.
• 9:22
It's actually- That is really cool... currently better than in the summer, so. Yeah. It, it... Ice riding on, along Lake Michigan's incredible. Yeah. Look at that. Someone's stealing your bike. Oh, that's Donna. Oh.
• 9:33
Don't worry about her. Donna's, Donna's a beast. Oh. So we're riding the bike in the hallway, for some context- Okay, okay... for the listeners. Yep, mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, so I saw- [laughs]...
• 9:41
one person with, uh, just in socks and having- Yeah, yep... some sort of issue with the, uh, pedals. Somebody told me- Very much focusing-... she wasn't gonna come back, but I was holding her phone for her.
• 9:49
[laughs] So I had some faith she was gonna return. There you go. Little ransom. So how about just this event in general, what do you think, Michelle? Is this like... Super chill, super fun.
• 9:59
Again, it's like a really good draw to come to a place that I wouldn't normally have, and this ball is going quite well, and there's lots of people in all different kinds of outfits.
• 10:09
Kinda got a prom theme going on, which is pretty neat. Yeah, yep, totally. Yep. Still have the costume judging to go, so we'll- Oh, yeah... figure out who's gonna win that part of the- Yeah... Mr. Leahy competition.
• 10:19
[laughs] JK came back just in time to cough on the microphone. [coughs] Yeah. Classy. [laughs] That's what I'm here for. Yep, yep. Yeah, yeah. He's the pro. All right.
• 10:29
Well, anything you wanna tell our listeners before we s- sign off and grab Mr. Gomez and Mr. Daisy to, uh, talk a little bit about how this event came to be? Just that you should all come next year, 'cause it was fun.
• 10:42
[laughs] Right on. And we're at- Thanks for coming... and we ended at 4:20. How cool is that? Oh. What? 4:20. Yeah. All right. We'll be back in a minute with Gom- oh, there's the bell ringing. Uh- [laughs] Coming back.
• 10:52
She's back. Donna with the bell and hitting the wall. No. [laughs] All right, folks. We're gonna get, grab- She probably just hit her ankle... Gomez and, uh, Mr. Chris Daisy. Stand by. We'll be back in a second.
• 11:04
Everyday Cycles is the go-to dealer for the remaining stock of the Chumba USA Ursa Major titanium fat bike. Contact Greg at everydaycycles.com for more information. Hey, everybody. We're back again.
• 11:19
Uh, that Gomez and, uh, Chris thing's gonna happen a little later. We've, uh, corralled a couple other guys here.
• 11:25
And, uh, while we wait for the costume contest, let's talk a little bit about the Huge Ass Fat Bike Series that's coming up.
• 11:32
Um, as much as I know about fat biking, it's one of the things I don't have a really good handle on is this particular race series. Uh, Brad's with us. He's actually raced this series, uh, for the last few years.
• 11:44
And Ernie's hanging out over there, too, uh, and Mr. T Burger of course. Um- What's up, guys? Brad. Yeah, Brad. Yeah, g- fill us in with what this thing is.
• 11:53
Um, and, uh, maybe folks will wanna do it, 'cause it sounds like it's a good thing. So I think we got three weeks from now, the first Huge Ass race is going to be at Lake Geneva Canopy Tours. And was that the 23rd?
• 12:08
It's the, it's still in November, right? November 23rd. Yep. Yeah. And, uh, it's a really awesome series. There's multiple different classes for different, like, levels of rider.
• 12:20
They have a, I think a first-timer class, and then citizen, juniors, and an elite class. Something like a wars race in the winter. Yeah, yeah. Very much. But, uh-
• 12:31
Fun, you got number plates that are just paper plates, and you throw them in a bucket at the end. Nice. No, no fancy scoring crap. Okay. It should be. And there's actually six races in the entire series. Six races.
• 12:43
One of them is going to be here at the Illinois Beach State Park area. I think some of it's gonna be in the campground. Yep. Maybe the beach. We might even be able to ride on the ice- Yeah, hopefully...
• 12:54
on the lake that time of year, so. That would be great. Um, that- It's, like, what, January 3rd or something? 3rd or 4th. Yeah.
• 12:59
Which is the same weekend as the next actual, uh, fatbike.com Zion Cyclery type event, uh, called Fatter By The Lake. Oh, well, we're gonna see you there.
• 13:08
So in conjunction with this race, we're also gonna be back at this hotel goofing off and playing, hopefully on a big shelf of ice out there, 'cause it, it really is awesome riding. It's like riding on the moon.
• 13:17
I love it. Yeah, it is fantastic. Yeah, that'll be very, very cool. You've ridden on the moon? Yes. Wow. [laughs] That's pretty amazing, isn't it? Like, like riding the moon.
• 13:27
Anyway, going back to the Huge Ass, uh, Series, it, it's just, uh, for any skill level. It, it's just an awesome series, and yeah, literally it's like dry, riding on the moon.
• 13:39
Uh- [laughs] So y- have you done several of these, uh, Huge Ass races too? Uh, I've, I've, I've done other races. Uh, I mean, I love riding, uh, in the winter.
• 13:47
Uh, I, uh, the last few years I've been busy d- during the winter and doing other personal stuff. But, uh, I, I'm, I just love riding my bike. In the past, I, I have done quite a few, uh, uh, fat bike, uh, races.
• 14:04
But the, the main thing is, uh, just, uh, anyone listening out there, just, uh, don't be afraid, uh, if your skill level is, is not, uh, high as you may feel. It, it's just, uh, it's fun. Come out, do it.
• 14:19
Uh, you will enjoy. It'll be fun. So neither of you guys are actually wearing a costume, right? I am Forrest Gump. Oh, okay. Well, there you go. Yeah. So we gotta get him into the costume contest. Forrest!
• 14:30
Oh, there you go. Brad, go get in the costume contest. I've only got calm on this thing. Hurry up. Yeah, maybe you can win some, uh, some stuff. All right. I'm out. We'll, we'll catch you when you come back. Bye, Brad.
• 14:39
And so yeah, uh, Mr., Mr. Daisy, the, uh, emcee of the event, is now getting ready to award the costume wearers, which is a good... 60% of the people here have costumes on, at least. The rest of us don't.
• 14:55
We'll talk to you in a little bit, folks. You're tuned to the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast. All right, everybody. Hey, that, the costume contest kinda turned into a dance contest, didn't it? Apparently so.
• 15:10
It definitely did. I went over there and stood there, and I missed out on the whole thing. [laughs] I didn't know what was going on. Me as well. So two, two young ladies, Heather and- Angela... Angela,
• 15:20
uh, had a semi-choreographed but, uh, very entertaining dance that they did, and that w- It was live. It was good... it w- it was...
• 15:27
And that won them both a new Wrathlord 45NRTH tire that 45NRTH supplied as a prize for contests here at the old, uh, Gran Fonduro day in Illinois. [inhales] Illinois Beach State Resort Parkville, et cetera, et cetera.
• 15:43
Where our races is. So, um, right on. And Brad and Ernie are back, and they've been fondling this thing for, like, half an hour. And, uh, why don't you guys tell us what you think?
• 15:51
Just look, this thing is still in the package. We did, we did open the package. Brad'll tell you why we did that. Oh, yeah. Um, obviously these are brand new tires.
• 15:58
This is the first we've seen them in, in, in the real world. Definitely. So, uh, what do you guys think of just looking at the tire? I think it would be my rear tire.
• 16:08
I would definitely run that on the rear in mushy snow, 'cause it would really cup the mushy snow and dig. But then it's also gonna perform good on ice. Let's make one quick observation about it. This tire is studded.
• 16:21
There's 300 studs in this thing, and in fact, they don't make this, like, the- Max cell studs. Right. So even the big ones- Yeah, they're concave and, and, uh-... they're, like, some of the Challenger 4 studs on that...
• 16:30
and really long. Yikes. Um, it's a 26 x 4.2 tire, and, uh, it's not available unstudded like some of the other tires in the 45NRTH line. Right. So this thing is made for, like, extreme conditions. 250.
• 16:43
It even has, like, what is it, triple X or something? I don't know. But, uh- [laughs] Well, it clearly states on it. It is- Extreme all conditions... the ultimate- One, two, three, four, five, six...
• 16:54
studded fat bike tire. It does say that. There's somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 X's- So it has to be true... under extreme there. So, um, but yeah, you guys looked at the tread, the- I think that means snow.
• 17:03
That's- Oh, that could be... that's like a snow sign. Gotcha. I don't know. Right on. I don't know how their, uh- I wouldn't say that's snow... graphic design people do this. Yeah, yeah... but, uh.
• 17:10
This, uh, this tire is clearly made for deep snow than ice, so which is exactly, uh- Best of both worlds... extreme conditions, the best of wor- both worlds. Yeah. Um, uh, well, uh, I was just looking at the design.
• 17:26
Uh, again, I would love to ride this, uh, tire sometime. Uh- Yes, yes... but it just, it just looks like a, an amazing design. Uh, I just can't wait to, to ride it. Yeah, I wanna ride this tire.
• 17:39
I have lots of tires, but- [laughs]... this one looks awesome. I, I- Um- Remember, folks, Brad's a racer. He's got lots of studs. Yeah. Yeah. I, I wanna race.
• 17:47
I'm just gonna say right now that- I want it to be nasty- You know?... slushy, snowy conditions. I love it. 45NRTH, if you're listening, it would be great if you sent these to us to give you a test ride review too.
• 17:58
Oh, they- I, I- They're already in the house. You know that. Oh. I would definitely test ride those. They're already in the house. I should have known that. Yes. Yes. Yep. M- Mr. G-Man.
• 18:07
I, I haven't been given that news yet, but I'd be glad to do a test ride review on that. [laughs] Oh, I think you'd rip the shit out of these things. A set for... But you know what? I'm gonna have to do...
• 18:16
It's gonna have to take a while, 'cause it's gotta get icy first. Can't really review that. That could be next week, dude. But- [laughs] I'm saying safely- February...
• 18:25
you know, yeah, February you could talk about what that does. I, I'm hoping that the, the Huge Ass race here is icy. But, but you know, the, the knobs on these tires- Yeah, that'd be cool...
• 18:32
are pretty much designed for r- really, uh-... deep snow and, uh, uh, you have like- They-... kind of messy trail conditions and I- But they got this cool siping- Right, so which is a, yeah-
• 18:47
That, that help with- They have an ice car... holding the studs. That's cool... again, again, again, these- They roll good forward, and then, like the Dillinger tires, the, you run them basically in reverse on the back.
• 18:56
Right. So that was- That's why we had-... we had a debate about that- [laughs] That's why we had Dom Lesnik... on when we opened it up because the V pattern looks a lot like it would on that. Right.
• 19:04
I mean, but deeper tread, but the V- Way deeper tread, yeah... pattern's like that, so we're like, "Does it run reverse, forward?" And we found out that it does, so that's pretty good information.
• 19:14
When I started, I didn't know that about the Dillingers and I ripped on a buddy for running his backwards, but he actually had the rear tire on the proper way. So, you know, you got sometimes you'll learn the hard way.
• 19:26
  Right. Right on.
• 19:27
Well, folks, we're gonna obviously have some more, uh, real world condition riding on this thing in the not too distant future, but, uh, meanwhile, two lucky ladies here won themselves so one of the first Wrath Lords out in the wild.
• 19:39
Yeah. Boom. It's gonna be awesome. All right, all right, all right. We'll be back a little bit- Come on... later. We're still... Oh, there, Gomez is back. Let's go, uh, corral these guys and we'll talk to them. Standby.
• 19:50
What? [upbeat music] Oh. Hey, everybody. We're back. We, we just had Brad- That's-... and, uh, Ernie talking about the Wrath Lord there, and, uh, now we corralled up, uh, Gomez from Fatbike.com and Mr.
• 20:01
Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery. Hello. And we want to talk to these two fine gentlemen because they are the reason... or why we're here For the season... for the season.
• 20:11
Um, just maybe, uh, Chris, give us an idea of how you worked this in with the resort and the city and whatnot, and then- Um- How, how...
• 20:20
You guys tell us how this happened because- Man, it's kind of almost a long, complicated story at this point [laughs] because it started in the springtime.
• 20:30
We'd been doing a lot of really successful group rides out of the shop, uh, coming down to Illinois Beach State Park over the years now, probably almost running on eight years, I would say. Yep. And, um,
• 20:45
at one point, I got a phone call from the resort, which I thought would be like, "Hey, stop riding across our lawn." [laughs] "You kids get out of here." Yeah, "What are you doing?"
• 20:55
But instead it was like, "Hey, we noticed you're like bringing 50 to 150 people across our lawn [laughs] on a monthly basis. What do we do to get in on it with you?"
• 21:08
So we kinda sat down and, uh, hammered some stuff out and said, "Hey, this would be a really great place for people with fat bikes to just come on their own and all winter long.
• 21:18
This could be a really cool new group of people for you guys to, uh, have at your hotel, and the best way to do that would be to have some events."
• 21:28
And so we set it all up, but then they went through a couple different management changes and some bumps in the road, and we had to kinda resell it a couple times. But now we're here- Yeah... drinking...
• 21:41
What are you guys drinking? I don't know. It's- Dude. It's like- Jameson. Smells like- Cheers. Smells like Bullet maybe. Oh, man. I don't know. Jameson just arrived. Oh, Jameson. Okay. Look to you.
• 21:51
One of those kind of things. And then she ran away. All right. Wow, that's... Where's the bell? It's, it's top of the hill, I guess. Top of the whiskey. I'm drinking some water so I don't get late cramps at 3:00 AM.
• 22:02
Right. That's probably a good call. So we talked, uh, earlier about the- It begins...
• 22:07
the two different rides- [laughs] The two different r- rides that we did today, a ride on the beach on the sand and then another ride through the park to, uh, Harbor Brewing up the road there in, uh- Yep...
• 22:18
Winthrop Harbor. Um, how... I mean, this is just a great area to ride year-round, but what makes it especially cool this time of year?
• 22:29
Um, well, what's kinda uncool was that we've got a bunch of flooding and weird [laughs] side effects of global warming, and it's probably gonna get worse from what you told me earlier, another 11 inches added onto the lake.
• 22:43
Yeah. So- It'll, it'll get worse before it gets better, but it's cyclical, folks. I think- Next year will be bring your galoshes to the party- [laughs]... and we'll all be soaking around in here, like...
• 22:52
[imitate walking in slush] [laughs] But currently- I do have, like, you do have one of the only beaches that can be ridden- Yeah, I know... within 200 miles- That's not a good thing... either direction. Yeah, I know.
• 23:01
That's not good. I know. Well, it's good... Well, it's good for this event. But yes. Yeah, yeah. Yes, this is the selfish speaking- [laughs]... where it's like, yeah, this is just damn awesome. Yeah. Yeah.
• 23:12
You guys can come- Or lousy, I don't know... around on any old beach. People who get more than 12 people to go on a beach ride with us. It's okay to be selfish on this ride.
• 23:18
[laughs] Hey, welcome to the one percenter beach ride involved. Oh, man. [laughs] JK came back just in time to cough in the microphone again. Again. [laughs] You all right, brother? I'm two for two.
• 23:31
He's staying in character as Mr. Lahey, which is- Yeah, JK's not here. It's Lahey, man... That's why that's happening. Lahey's here. Just got a little drinky before this. So Gomez, how did you start working with Mr.
• 23:40
Daisy here on this? What did that, uh- Well-... feel or sound like? I have somewhat of a history of herding people towards bike fun. Yes. You know? And I do that Gnomefest thing. I do... I, I've done
• 23:54
other things, and started the first fat bike race in Wisconsin, and ah, that's right. So I like doing things like this. So it's, um...
• 24:05
Somehow I got it in my head that there's so many races and there aren't any events for people that don't race, you know? And I l- I love to mix,
• 24:18
mix things up, and I've always wanted to have bike proms, and I've held small bike proms. But holding it in a banquet room with a DJ and- And a kick-ass chandelier. Look at that thing. [laughs] That thing's badass.
• 24:30
And disco lights and people fricking dancing. [laughs] It was, like, crazy. And you know, all of the other bike stuff with a flaming- Uh, flaming skit contest down there.
• 24:42
Uh, there's, you'll, you'll see videos [laughs] By the, uh, this, by Steel Horse 1, the Surly, uh, mothership Yeah, yeah. So, so I came up with this idea of Fundura. You know?
• 24:52
Blending all of the things from the punk bike enduro, Durags punk bike enduro, to Gnome Fest, to, uh, MTBR gatherings. All these things that I've experienced and have been like, ah, the jam in my life.
• 25:06
It's like, that's, these people are my tribe. Yeah. This is like, like, the thing, mi familia, right?
• 25:13
So, and, and that intangible feeling that you get at events like this is just like that, you know, you, there's no name for it. It's just beta waves in your brain, right? All that good stuff. So- It's the crack.
• 25:26
The crack is the good time. Yeah, there you go, Jim. [laughs] It's the liquor. The crack is the good time. The crack. The c- like the- So- You're wearing a kilt, so I'm going with the Irish on this.
• 25:38
[laughs] There you go. The crack is the good time. The crack. It's all about the crack. Not the crack. Right. Why? You got some? So we, we ran one- Box of rocks... with live rock bands and, you know, like,
• 25:52
our 100th show thing, like that was a big- Yep. That was cool... stepping stone of like, whoa, people derbying inside on concrete with good metal playing. Yeah. It was just like- That was beautiful, for sure... awesome.
• 26:04
When I had that same feeling with weird disco music and, like, people really dancing. [laughs] It's, uh-
• 26:12
So- Strangely, strangely odd Besides you two guys planning this and, uh, making it happen, there were some other folks that helped us out with prizes for the event and Surly bikes. Yeah, we got good sponsors. Yep.
• 26:23
They gave us some cool stuff, for sure. And, uh, Surly, for sure, was awesome. Shout out to Aaron for being super cool and I unfortunately missed the whole flaming bucket thing. I hope people got video and pictures.
• 26:36
Oh, I got video. Oh, good.
• 26:39
[laughs] 'Cause I was busy f- like showering and getting into my duds and trying to get this whole disco party going and- Oh, those guys could all still be out there doing that because I don't see any of them in here yet.
• 26:49
[laughs] And that's fine. Yeah. Right on. Well, I mean, I w- so there's another one of these coming up in January, for sure. Yep.
• 26:57
Uh, that would be the third, fourth, fifth, second, third, fourth, one of those, somewhere in that weekends. Yep. The, it starts on the 2nd and it goes through the 4th, I believe.
• 27:08
So yeah, it's a weekend festival, so a winter fat bike festival in Zion, centered around the hotel here. And, uh, I know we already have specialized bikes coming with their line for demos. Um, may- you know?
• 27:26
I threw this idea at Mr. Daisy before. Here, I'm gonna throw it at you right now across live airwaves. Yes. Uh, what do you think of the idea of maybe having a seminar or two from some of the folks in the industry?
• 27:37
Not so much a sales, "Look at my bike. This is a cool thing. Buy it," but, "This is my experience out there, and this is how, having done this for a while, I've learned this about, I learned this about that."
• 27:47
And, uh- Well, I was actually, I had the idea of fashion show, both fashion show bike and fashion show what to wear in the winter.
• 27:55
Um, and you know, I'm open to, to ideas like that and, you know, it takes industry support and- Yeah, for sure... um, Surly's been really good with this.
• 28:04
We should, we should thank everybody that, that helped us out with this. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Yeah. Portland Design Works. Yep. Bond Trigger. Um, 45 North, Bond Trigger. QBP in general. Right.
• 28:16
Surly, of course, again. Surly. [laughs] The Danger Gnome [laughs] Podcast. Here's where I get my plug in. Yeah. Yeah. Plug your podcast. What do you think about that, Jim?
• 28:27
[laughs] Zion, Zion Cyclery spent about- He's drinking... w- I, I think we spent about 400 bucks on pizza. Enough of this wine. [laughs] Zion Cyclery for the pie. Yeah. And getting pizza pie. Yeah.
• 28:38
Getting heckled by one of the, uh, the pizza men about locking up. "You know this is private property." Okay, I'm moving along. [laughs] I'm like- [laughs] "See you guys. I'm going home." Yeah.
• 28:52
[laughs] It's like, "Don't mess with my chi right now." Yeah, we had, like, quite the field trip today. We, we were out, out and about. Dude, I had like- If it were a race, I would've been DFL. It's Kitty.
• 29:02
[laughs] Hi, Kitty. Kitty. Kitty. Well, right on, guys. Thanks for making this thing happen. It's certainly, uh, an awesome event. Yes. Is it that there's one tentatively planned for April as well? Maybe.
• 29:14
We'll see if they wanna still have us. [laughs] [laughs] But- Yeah, this is beta testing. Yes.
• 29:20
[laughs] Hey, I would argue there is no other alcohol being sold anywhere in this hotel currently, and there are still a lot of people coming up to that bar, so I think they'll have us back. Yeah, I'm imagining.
• 29:32
I'm guessing. Right. I'm guessing. Well, again, thanks, guys, for putting it on and, uh- Thank you, man. This is awesome... Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery. Woo. Gomez from Fatbike.com and the Danger Gnome Podcast.
• 29:43
Gnomes stand. Mr. Jim Leahy from Trailer Park Boys. Thank you very much, Jim, for showing up. Assistant manager. So- Are you currently assistant manager?... yes. Yes. Whispering winds of shit there, Randy, Randy way.
• 29:55
All right, folks. We'll see what else we can dig up in the next few minutes. Thanks for listening. Ah. Right on, right on. Well, the corralling didn't take long.
• 30:07
Um, long lost Surly Steel Horse 1 driver and, uh, demo man extraordinaire, Aaron, is here. He'd been- Oh, welcome... welcome Aaron to the program. Uh, we just, uh, had, had, uh, Gomez and Mr.
• 30:21
Chris Daisy on and talked about how great Surly is for supporting events like this.
• 30:25
And, um, part of the reason, I think, is some of the fun bike games you put together out there in the old parking lot while people were getting their costumes on and whatnot. Like, I was, I was in here.
• 30:34
I don't know what happened out there. So- [laughs]... bring to our listeners a- Oh, oh, oh... kind of a, paint a picture of what happened at, this would be after our dinner ride- Yes...
• 30:44
and still in the, in the demo area, where the Surly Steel Horse 1 was parked, so- Well, first we, first we- Take, take it away. [laughs] First we had to cl- clear the palette, so we did a big, a big old derby
• 30:56
One winner to rule them all.
• 30:57
It was three, three rounds, I believe, to, to really dial it in, and we gave away a set of Nate's, uh, w- filled up with some tubes, all the way to some, uh, Other Brother Rolling Derails, free of charge. Nice. Awesome.
• 31:11
So we did that, and then the, the grand finale was the skid competition. Nice. Um, this is a, this is a trick I learned from our friend Zito- Yep, yep... uh, at the last Funduro.
• 31:20
He was looking around for a hotel pan at, at the resort and couldn't find one. He found some pickle buckets. And I'm like, "Yo, what, what are you doing with those pickle buckets?" He's like, "Skid competition."
• 31:29
Skid contest, that's for sure. Check it out. And I was like, "Okay, man, I got a lot to learn." Like- [laughs] I'm, I'm a, I'm a child in this world, so...
• 31:36
Did you do front wheel and rear wheel skid contest, or just rear wheel? Just rear. We... just rear. I always- The whole psychology, yeah. Yeah, yeah. The f- the front wheel one is, that's a tough one. That's a tough one.
• 31:45
Oh. [laughs] Next time, next time. I, I remember Kenny Nielsen doing that at Lakefront Brewery, and it didn't end well. No, it ends up usually on the ground. It was funny. Yes, exactly.
• 31:54
It, it, it looked worse than his laughing at the end was. [laughs] But it- But it was like, "Wee." Speaking of Kenny Nielsen, at our last Funduro, he was the winner of the Other Brother Deraillers. Oh, cool. Oh, yeah.
• 32:04
Excellent. Yeah. Excellent. Yes. Yeah. So, um, obviously Surly is really into fat bikes with the Wednesday and the, um, ice cream truck that you guys demoed here.
• 32:13
What did you get feed- feedback from people on those bike? What, what did you hear about them? It was, it was positive both ways.
• 32:18
You know, like, just, just talking to the different, different strengths of the bikes and, and, you know, first case versus second case.
• 32:24
You know, if you get a bike packing bike or a trail bike, you know, it really made a lot of sense for a lot of people. And, and also, the, the tire size too thing was great.
• 32:31
We had the wet beach to ride on, so that was, that was cool- Oh, yeah... to kinda show, like, here's a four-inch tire in some really, really wet sand. [laughs] Here's a five-inch tire in some really, really wet sand.
• 32:39
So like, it's cool to have that kinda integrate terrain, plus the fun ride afterwards, kinda title it. Yeah, not, not being like hypothetically, if you're- Yeah. Yeah. You know? Da, da, da, da, da.
• 32:49
It's like, hey- No, wait, just check it... there you go. Yeah, that's right. The, the beach is right there. You know, this is, this is what it will be. Yep. [laughs] So... [laughs] This is what it is and will be.
• 32:56
But anyway- Uh... Everyone came back with a big smile on their face. They c- they, they got it Absolutely. Yep. Yeah. Super, man. Well, where is your next stop?
• 33:03
Uh, what's your schedule look like for demos coming up, uh, say, in the next two weeks? 'Cause people will hear this in a couple of days, and they'll be like- Uh...
• 33:10
"Oh, I'd sure like to go see Aaron, 'cause that guy's cool as hell." The next two weeks will be sleeping. Um, we, we do pretty set. [laughs] Um, I, we've got a, uh, a booth December 14th.
• 33:18
We're gonna do a, a fat bike demo in Madison with, with Revolations Shops in Madison. Um, doing a, a Wednesday ice cream truck demo. Um, and then we have the Other Funduro thing is, is on the 2nd and 3rd of January.
• 33:30
Right. Okay. Yeah. So that, that'll be a bounce back here. I'm, um, setting up some, um, shop things around that event, too. So there'll be some stuff coming out on the fat bikes.
• 33:39
So that's a little bit further down the, down the way, but yeah. We haven't, uh, we haven't mentioned Jeff from Revolution yet. Jeff is, uh, Revolution Cycles in Madison.
• 33:46
He was, uh, here with us today at this fine event as well and helping at the Surly demo tent, getting people set up on the bikes and sending them out on the beach. So good, good on you, Jeff. Yes, absolutely.
• 33:57
One- A fine, a fine suit, too. He was talking about his suit all the... He was a little excited about the suit. And that's when I forgot that, like, this is a ball I should wear some fancy clothes to. So- Yeah...
• 34:07
I missed, I missed that, that, that... I missed that whole thing. You're rock- you're rocking a kick-ass pulse shirt. I, I, I- Is that GG? Oh, yeah. Hell yeah. I just had to score one of those as well.
• 34:14
That's, that's just such a great, like- Of all the T-shirts, I was like, this is my, my, my ball gown... the album cover T-shirt.
• 34:20
I kinda, I didn't think about it until I, like, looked at the name of the event again- [laughs]... on the way, and then I was like, "What?" Oh, it's a ball. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And I'm like, "Oh, oh."
• 34:28
And so I just kinda grabbed my Lahey costume from Halloween. It's fantastic. And I'm like, "All right." That's the mannerisms, folks. That's the mannerism. You can't see it on the radio, but- [laughs]...
• 34:38
the mannerisms are all there. He is the liquor, yes. Yeah, he is. And it's, well, it's the best, best costume ever. [laughs] No matter how drunk you get, you're always in character. [laughs] Cheers. Stand and pour.
• 34:48
All right, Aaron, well, thanks for joining us. Absolutely. Uh, we'll see you down the trail. I'm sure we'll be at both of those events or- Right on. Yeah... whatever. But, uh- It was good...
• 34:55
it's always good having you around, and, um, next time we're sicking Zito on you. Oh. [laughs] Deal. [laughs] All right, man. Aaron from Surly, baby. That guy is the man. Thank you, Surly, very much.
• 35:09
Uh, kind of our title sponsor at this event is what I would say. Yeah, totally. He's a good guy. I don't know. I think we- He's a great guy...
• 35:15
we packed enough into this show to say, you know, I don't know, let's get the hell out of here pretty much. But, uh, any last thoughts, Ernie? Ernie's with us again. Yeah. Well, uh, pretty much just love riding Surlys.
• 35:28
Uh- Oh, yeah?... I love my Pugsley. Uh, yeah. Thank you, fatbike.com to- For the record, Ernie-... sponsor this thing... what, what, uh, Pugsley do you ride? What's the, uh, color of the paint job on your Pugsley?
• 35:41
It's a Pugsley, uh, chocolate, kind of a- Isn't it called Grandpa's Shorts? Yeah. Yeah, I think that's how it's called. Grandpa's Shorts Brown. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] My favorite Pugsley color ever.
• 35:54
It's, uh, it's, uh- Well, for the name purposes, for sure... yeah, totally for the name. Yeah, they definitely have fun with naming things.
• 35:59
But, uh- For, for the listeners out here, I met Ernie the first time when we all did the beach ride in Port Washington, and he's the dude that rolled up in the Grandpa's Shorts. And I'm like, "Yes."
• 36:14
[laughs] And he rolled up- Always rolls up... not only in the Grandpa's Shorts, but he had beer. That was, uh, that was, uh- It was a long time ago... few, a few years ago. Long time ago. It was a long time ago.
• 36:23
Like nine, eight, nine years ago. So, yeah, we're, so we're, we're going back a few years, but, uh- It happens. We're old. Love, uh, love you, Tommy.
• 36:32
Well, obviously Ernie hasn't lost the- Well, we're n- we're never, never old. Just, uh- Ernie hasn't lost the love of fat biking. Just the- I have never lost the love. Mr. Burger.
• 36:40
JK, recent convert, but not, not lost the love yet of fat biking. Well... We'll, we'll never lo- I'm not all out of love. I'm not so lost without you. Yeah. We're not so lost.
• 36:49
Well, he, he's kinda so lost without his bike, though. Yeah, I'm kind of in a- [laughs]... kind of, kind of floating a little bit. And, and most of your hair for your Halloween costume. Yeah. I'm trying- Oh, man...
• 37:00
I, I think, uh, I think this is, uh, getting shorn off between- Yeah, going clean... right now, right now in checkout time. Oh. Well, this way I don't have to clean it up at my own house.
• 37:13
[laughs] This is actually a pretty good idea. [laughs] That's a shop vac- That's a-... in 20 seconds... Illinois Resort and Convention Center and Hairstyling Salon [laughs] Well, no, I, I, I'll, I'll be considerate.
• 37:22
I'm not gonna just leave without a, you know, like a weird snuff film except with hair all over the bathroom. Well, yeah, because we didn't bring any equipment to make a weird snuff film. I've always got the equipment.
• 37:35
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bow chicka bow wow. Bow wow. Chicka chicka. I gotta get a picture of Mr. T Burger here in his, uh, resplendent in his pinstripe black and white suit there. With my rubber tire bow tie? Yeah.
• 37:49
That's pretty, pretty tips, dude. With the rubbers. Yeah, I love this bow tie. I got- All right I got new, four new rubbers on my Jeep. You did, didn't you? Four tires. Tires. All right. Okay. Hey, everybody.
• 38:07
Thanks- Doing a show... thanks for listening. All right. Pretty sure we offended almost everyone we know, plus everybody we've never met, so [laughs] if we haven't done that, we're probably not doing this show right.
• 38:16
And, uh, you know, come back and listen to our show 33, which we're gonna do in a few days. In, in live. This is like a, this is a super bonus episode. It totally is a super bonus episode.
• 38:26
You lucky, you lucky people, you. [laughs] Man, you have no idea how lucky you are. You lucky listener. People, come- Come back and fat bike. Fat bike. All right. We love you.
• 38:37
  [upbeat music]
