- 0:23None. Hamster with a blunt penknife
- 0:35for. Doing quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Quicker Welcome back to Hamster with a Blunt Penknife, the
- 0:41Doctor Who commentary podcast. I I'm blame Mcmenamy.
- 0:45I'm not your regular host. I'm joined by your regular host,
- 0:48Mr. Joe Ford. Hello, I'm very delighted to be
- 0:51here. Thank you for having me today,
- 0:52I. Should hope so it's your
- 0:53podcast. I'll do, I'll do anything.
- 0:56I'll bribe anyone to have an evening in in your guy's
- 0:59company. So I'm very pleased you're both
- 1:01volunteers. Oh you charm, you charm.
- 1:05Also joined by my my podcast and broadcast colleague Mr. Cameron
- 1:09Phillips. Hello hello all.
- 1:13Cameron, will you do me a favour please and just give everyone a
- 1:15quick update on our relationship status?
- 1:19And I really we are. I believe.
- 1:21I I hope we are. We podcast married, are we not?
- 1:24We are, yes, indeed. And and I hope I, I, you know,
- 1:28make a nice home for you. Dinner's on the table every
- 1:31night. I'll warm your slippers before
- 1:33you get into bed, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:35Yes, love and dressing gown as we've been through.
- 1:38You warm your slippers up before he gets into bed.
- 1:41Yeah, he's very. You make your slippers to bed.
- 1:43What's wrong with your Cameron? Your animal?
- 1:46He lives in fucking Scotland, all right?
- 1:47He's cold. Yeah, you know, it's cold, man.
- 1:49It's cold. I'm not going to dispute that.
- 1:52I think there's there's there's one thing about, you know, being
- 1:54with Joe and that's you've always got warm extremities.
- 1:58He's not wrong. Can I ask you a question?
- 2:00Actually, I'm a bit. I mean, I've been to Edinburgh
- 2:02about five Times Now, but I always went when there was very
- 2:05Clement weather. Is it very cold in Scotland?
- 2:09I hear rumours that it's bloody freezing.
- 2:11I was. Going to say that doesn't really
- 2:13narrow it down. Do you know what, actually, the
- 2:15last three days it's been nice and sunny outside but a bit
- 2:18chilly, so I reckon that's a little bit caught up until about
- 2:21July now. Yeah, it's chilly in the
- 2:24mornings at the minute and then kind of nice in the afternoons,
- 2:27I think. Yeah, it's varied.
- 2:29It's never boring. There's bloody freezing down
- 2:31here. We're getting it all wrong, Lee.
- 2:35Why don't you let everybody know what we're here to talk about
- 2:37today? We are here to talk about and to
- 2:40continue talking about perhaps the finest document in Doctor
- 2:43Who history, in my opinion, nobody else's.
- 2:47It's the majestic War machines from Series 3.
- 2:51When did you first see this? I don't need to ask him that
- 2:54question. Yeah, because right now he's.
- 3:00Living it for the first time, first thing I saw this was
- 3:02probably about, oh, when the DVD came out of the margin, that's
- 3:05when I was living down in York. So I had the job working down in
- 3:09York for it's like 4 days on, four days off.
- 3:10And I think that's came out in the depths of the winter.
- 3:14So a lot of my afternoons were go for a walk in the morning and
- 3:17at the centre of the York back along the river get a couple of
- 3:20nice cakes from the bakers across the road.
- 3:21Especially here as I'm going to get in, get on the couch for the
- 3:23cats, watch the Doctor Who the the So it would have been around
- 3:28about 2000 and nine 2010 I think this came out, which is the
- 3:31first time I've ever seen it. Instant favorite for mostly the
- 3:35reason that I subscribed in episode one of this podcast.
- 3:37So yeah, it's remained. So it's just something about it
- 3:40that I love. Was that really your daily life?
- 3:44That sounds like absolute heaven.
- 3:45Oh God, I miss it. Walk down a canal, buy some
- 3:48cakes, watch some. Doctor Who?
- 3:49That's. Great.
- 3:51Four times a week. Yeah, well, I wish I was you
- 3:54before this, but now even more so.
- 3:56And Cameron, how is your first experience of watching this
- 3:59Doctor Who episode minus sound, with two idiots talking all over
- 4:02it? It's it's not been detrimental
- 4:06to the experience I have to say. It's making me.
- 4:08It's it's making me, as I say, wanted to go back and watch it
- 4:13as God intended in the in the near future.
- 4:16But I'm quite I'm quite liking this.
- 4:18I'm I'm a big fan of evil entities that have corporate
- 4:21logos. And.
- 4:24And MO tan seems to fall, you know, You know, like like Cobra
- 4:27from GI Joe. You know, they've gone to the
- 4:29lengths of being an evil, you know, militia, but they've still
- 4:32got a little nice designed article, you know, thing for the
- 4:36top of the letter heads. Wu Tan's definitely got a blue
- 4:39tick. He does.
- 4:42He's definitely paying for for his blue tick on Hex.
- 4:45Keep an eye out on this episode for where the the special
- 4:48components are being delivered to the warehouse to create the
- 4:51war machines. They're the cut price Daleks
- 4:53from this story and they're all stamped with the West.
- 4:56You know, even his boxes for the components are stamped.
- 4:59With his corporate logo. Do you think there might be a
- 5:02reading in there about capitalism?
- 5:06But possibly there wouldn't be some teenage little inkling of
- 5:09anti capitalist. I'll tell you something before
- 5:13thinking like that. If the Watan went on The
- 5:15Apprentice instant one, he's straight through the final,
- 5:18isn't he? Oh.
- 5:19That would be glorious. Wouldn't.
- 5:22It hypnotizes Alan Sugar on the last episode for the investment.
- 5:28Your your your hired. I'm not sure Alan Sugar could
- 5:33talk in more of a monotone, though, if I'm honest.
- 5:38Well, I've got some questions I want to ask you about the
- 5:40novelisation in episode two. We should probably press play
- 5:44and get into it. Now.
- 5:46Cameron, please interject at any time with any frilling
- 5:49observations you're having about the glorious visuals.
- 5:51OK, OK. Otherwise, we're just going to
- 5:53talk all over here. All right.
- 5:57I will count as in then in 543, 21, here we go.
- 6:06So what How was the how was the book, how was the prose?
- 6:11You know it's just a book you would recommend to non Doctor
- 6:13Who fans to read. I will not lie to you.
- 6:16Like most target novels of the classic series, it's a quick
- 6:19read. It doesn't really diverge too
- 6:22much from what you see on screen.
- 6:23That does flash out a lot of bits here and there.
- 6:27Like I said in first episodes, the whole fortune the signature
- 6:29of V in Chesterton to get into the post office tower.
- 6:31So it's mostly faithful to what you see on screen, but it is
- 6:35worth reading. But all the little extra details
- 6:37are chucked in there so. Was there any additional
- 6:41information about Dodo going off to the country?
- 6:44Yes, that was my segue to talk about Dodo.
- 6:47I'll need to go back and look. I don't think it was much like
- 6:50in the TV episode. She's going to just move the
- 6:52side, so I'll need to reread that and I'll get back to you
- 6:56properly on that. But I don't.
- 6:57I don't recall it being a big emotion farewell for her, which
- 7:00is a crime. I don't know too much of the
- 7:02behind the scenes as to why they just summarily dismissed Jackie
- 7:06Lane, but from what I can see it's like wow, we want to bring
- 7:11the show up to date and bring in these sort of swinging 60s
- 7:13companions and make the show more fun.
- 7:16And we've got this sort of frumpy middle-aged woman
- 7:18pretending to be a teenager currently in the show.
- 7:23But it does seem to be that the ACT just failed, right?
- 7:25It just they just went no, your contract's over.
- 7:27Go. Yeah.
- 7:29Stevie's played an odd one because it's like that all the
- 7:31way through. You've got three different
- 7:33producers. I think you have about 7
- 7:35companions throughout the course of these, like 7 or 8 stories.
- 7:39Like you start off with Vicky and Stephen, then it's just
- 7:42Stephen, then Dodo comes in, there's Katarina, there's Sarah
- 7:45Kingdom as well. If you count them as proper
- 7:47companions, which they kind of are before we even get to Ben
- 7:51and Pauli and Ennis. Lloyd just seems to have no
- 7:54qualms whatsoever, just firing people because it doesn't think
- 7:59they work for the show, regardless of contracts they may
- 8:01have signed. It's like the prototype Michael
- 8:03grades, you know, it seems to just hate Doctor Who in all
- 8:05those forms. So.
- 8:07But there's a there's a because there's a weird situation when
- 8:10when Michael Cray's and Annika Wills go and one of them tells
- 8:15the story, that they were both given the chop at the same time.
- 8:19Annika Wills tells the story that no, I was offered an
- 8:22extended contract, but they wanted to get rid of Michael
- 8:25Cray's because Fraser Hynes was there all of a sudden.
- 8:29Yeah. And it just seems to be a period
- 8:30where there was just no regard whatsoever for the fact that
- 8:34this was these people's fucking livelihoods.
- 8:36Yeah, yeah, that's true. I mean, I know what they're kind
- 8:39of making it on the hoof because like the time between recording
- 8:42and broadcast and actually felt with all this stuff is pretty
- 8:44small Windows. But even still, you think, yeah,
- 8:48producer could have some sort of forward planning and on just
- 8:51sacking people seemingly on a whim, which is what's happened
- 8:55to what all this happened to pure old Jackie Lane here.
- 9:00So come on then. You said that you were going to
- 9:02mount a defence of Dodo. Now I quite like Dodo.
- 9:06I think she's very fun. But the court is in session,
- 9:11toys box style. Cameron and I will be
- 9:14adjudicating. Off you go.
- 9:17I've got no hope then. OK, well, it's mostly more than
- 9:21you, Jacqueline, rather than the.
- 9:22That's a bit to do with the character of those as well.
- 9:24But she just never gets a chance on Doctor Who.
- 9:28She's only in five stories. She's introduced at the very,
- 9:31very end of one, and then she's dismissed in the middle of this
- 9:35one. All through that time, they
- 9:37can't seem to decide what they want to do before she comes in.
- 9:40She's a cockney. By the time the next series
- 9:42starts, she's a mink. She's just walked off the set of
- 9:44coordination streak, but then we get to this point.
- 9:47She's RP, so she's never got a chance to have a consistent,
- 9:51settled aspect to her character. She's pushed from pillar to
- 9:54post, and I can understand why after leaving Doctor Who for so
- 10:00many years, she didn't want to have anything to do with it.
- 10:03Because you're on a job, your manager doesn't know what to do
- 10:07with you. You don't get a chance to show
- 10:09what you can do and then you're just dismissed without warning.
- 10:12If they phone you up like 2 weeks down the line and say
- 10:13actually we're going for drinks at the pub, do you want to come?
- 10:15You tell them that you're gone and that's what Jackie Lane's
- 10:18done for years and she's good. She is really good.
- 10:22I know this has received wisdom of fans that oh, that's
- 10:26terrible. Doctor Who companion, she was
- 10:29only in it for a little while, but that's powers outside her
- 10:31control. You look at her in the
- 10:33gunfighters, she's brilliant in the gunfighters.
- 10:36She. Guides the comedy perfectly.
- 10:39All the business with the piano and forgetting her lyrics and
- 10:42loads of stuff that she does that even like the Arc as well.
- 10:46She's really, really good and I don't think she's given the
- 10:48credit that she's due. There are far worse Doctor Who
- 10:52companions than Dodo and it's just circumstance.
- 10:54She never got the chance to have an extended run and show what
- 10:57she could do so. Whilst.
- 10:59You're not guilty, Doctor Who? While you're on a hiding for
- 11:02nothing here, will you naming shame please the Doctor Who
- 11:05companions that are worse than Dodo?
- 11:08Well, we can go for that as a wet cardboard.
- 11:09That's Nessa. Can't be.
- 11:11OK Cam any any suggestions? Adrick bottom of the table all
- 11:16the time. Don't care who Adrick is, bottom
- 11:17of the table. May I suggest you guys don't do
- 11:20season 19 then anytime soon? Oh God, I just.
- 11:25I despise. Adrick with every.
- 11:27Favour of my billion. I mean, I I knew a lot of kids
- 11:31like Adrick when I was growing. Up.
- 11:32And I defend that absolute crap gate.
- 11:35Oh, now, Cam, keep an eye on this fella here.
- 11:38This is our comedy tramp for the episode, right?
- 11:41OK, now he's looking to Doss down in that warehouse over
- 11:45there and he comes across the war machines being created in
- 11:53the warehouse. So this is our first slicing of
- 11:56them sort of being put together and all that.
- 11:58Unfortunately, then he gets he gets chased around the warehouse
- 12:02and the only thing that's missing is the Benny Hill theme
- 12:04tune because it is very nice. Come on, lady is right.
- 12:12Yes, but you know what? I've got a feeling about this
- 12:14tramp step that we'll get to very, very shortly when I
- 12:16certain someone pops up on screen.
- 12:18I'll give you the nod when that happens because we may have to
- 12:20pause it briefly so I can point out to you the person I'm
- 12:23talking about. So I'll give you a shout.
- 12:26I'm a big fan though. But even though Wu Tan is like a
- 12:29evil artificial intelligent computer bent on hell and
- 12:33destruction, he's still giving jobs to people.
- 12:37Whoa, he needs human labour. Well, wait till you see the size
- 12:43of the bloody things. You'll see why they're
- 12:45absolutely enormous. Oh no.
- 12:47OK. As the fella said on Blue Pizza,
- 12:49nothing will be able to withstand it.
- 12:51It'll just go broom and knock it all over.
- 12:55You've seen that, haven't you Like?
- 12:56Oh yeah. Oh yeah, Look.
- 12:59Look at the branding on the boxes.
- 13:02Come on now. Oh yeah, it's got a bit of stock
- 13:04and he's doing his work out of Covent Garden.
- 13:07You know, he's got a bit of style.
- 13:11Thinking that rental prices though in that place, I dread
- 13:13to. Think.
- 13:15Wolf Time myself has very deep pockets.
- 13:19I love all the warehouse. It's really well, short.
- 13:23I know it's all in filming and healing, but it just really adds
- 13:25to it, doesn't it? And he goes pick Ben.
- 13:27Josh's dad's off to me. He's doing.
- 13:29Well, I mean, what helps is the fact that it's shot on film at
- 13:33Ealing means that when it comes to the action sequences later on
- 13:37in the story where they're they're doing like rapid cuts or
- 13:42people dying, the the machines, you know, spinning around and
- 13:46all of this. It's not your typical 1960s
- 13:50action sequence at this point because it's being done in film
- 13:54studios where they can handle, let's say, a little bit of
- 13:57dynamism. It's not lime.
- 14:00Grove Is it comedy traps though? Cam, do you remember Pig Bin
- 14:05Josh from Claws of Axos? Yes, vaguely.
- 14:08Yeah, I remember. The one that gets on the same
- 14:10claws of axos, he he. Finds the old battered bike and
- 14:14ends up in the frozen water going Arg Arg.
- 14:18Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Terrible.
- 14:21Here we go. The section I think we're coming
- 14:23to describe the three stream might be required.
- 14:26Cindy or Joe. Pause button.
- 14:29I'll give you the shout. Oh, I'm actually going to pause
- 14:31it. Yeah.
- 14:32Yeah, you're going to have to pause the second point.
- 14:33OK, everybody listening. Please get your pause buttons
- 14:36ready. Yes, on it should give you
- 14:38advance awarding, folks. So right about no OK messed up.
- 14:46Can you go back just a couple of seconds?
- 14:47Yeah, Oh, I'll go back 20 seconds and press play again.
- 14:50Right. OK.
- 14:51Just go back 20. Seconds.
- 14:55Any bugger listens to this alongside actually watching it.
- 14:58OK, be quick with me this time. OK, coming up and just after the
- 15:04semen, they're all lining up. No, perfect.
- 15:10No, the person on the far right hand and say to your screen and
- 15:17the white shot in the dark jacket, do you recognize that
- 15:20man? No, no.
- 15:23Oh, ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to you the listeners
- 15:27of Hamster, Rob Blunt, Penknife, the one and only Mr. Frank
- 15:30Butcher that. Is my Chris.
- 15:33That is my Chris. Jeez, he looks so slim.
- 15:37I know he's like 2526 here, so I mean, yeah, I do obviously know
- 15:42how much his appearance fee was, right?
- 15:45No. Five, he says.
- 15:50EastEnders joke for everybody I. Think he read appears a couple
- 15:54of times, doesn't he? In he does.
- 15:56And yes, he does. Yeah, I yes, he's a jobbing
- 15:59extra at this point. But here's my theory.
- 16:02That's just what I really think happens to pick Ben Josh's dad
- 16:06in this warehouse. Because he never actually sees
- 16:07death. I don't actually see what
- 16:09happens to him, so let's not forget that one of Frank
- 16:12Butcher's big storylines in EastEnders was torching the car
- 16:15law and an insurance scam whilst, unbeknownst to him,
- 16:18there was a homeless person sleeping inside one of the cars
- 16:21that got killed. I'm just saying he's got a
- 16:23history of offing tramps. Oh no, we don't see what happens
- 16:27to this man, but I'm putting the finger on my creed.
- 16:30You're basically saying that is Frank Butcher there from
- 16:33EastEnders. Frank.
- 16:34Butcher is. And and as he thought we were
- 16:37introduced to him, he was already heavy into sort of tramp
- 16:41murder at. That point?
- 16:42Yeah. Everybody's got Hey, I hope beat
- 16:45him. Honestly, no one dishes out
- 16:48trivia like you, Lee. Honestly, I love it.
- 16:53OK. Am I safe to press play?
- 16:55Yes, you are. I want to.
- 16:57Keep an eye on him now, actually, and see what he he
- 17:00gets. Up soon, he does.
- 17:01Up later on, one of the soldiers in the, I think the last
- 17:04episode's been having the big fight with War Machine.
- 17:06Actually, you know what? With that close up there, you
- 17:07really could actually see that was here.
- 17:09I never. Knew that Billy Conley was in
- 17:10Doctor Who. Here he is.
- 17:14Look at this. Now this is where you need the
- 17:15Betty Hill music. Oh, you go, Billy, Run, run for
- 17:21your life. They're building a big war
- 17:23machine. I won't say nothing, boss, he
- 17:28says. It's a bit broad, isn't it?
- 17:32OK. All of the BCS or Spall though.
- 17:35Oh yeah. Oh, here we go again.
- 17:40Nothing goes. This would be the perfect time
- 17:42you know for this to be one of your videos on the Polish box
- 17:45with the Benny or theme chick. I'll be getting to this.
- 17:50I will do that. I'll just be you Joe all.
- 17:52Right. Oh, have a look, Cam.
- 17:55Oh, my Lord, alive. How would you play then, Garden?
- 18:01How would you describe the war machine?
- 18:03It's kind of like a demonic metal Mickey, isn't it?
- 18:08I used to love metal Mickey. Did you use the watch that?
- 18:11Yeah. He used to scare me a little
- 18:13bit. Actually, it's.
- 18:14A bit intimidating, isn't he? It's a big old junkie Metal.
- 18:17It's. Me right away, Yeah.
- 18:21All right, he's oh, we're back with the Doctor.
- 18:22Here we go. We're in safe hands here.
- 18:25We'll see. What occurs is is Dodo comes in
- 18:28now and attempts to have the doctor hypnotise.
- 18:32She takes the phone call from Vote Anne and gives him the
- 18:35phone. And please have a look at
- 18:37William Hartnell's attempting to not be hypnotised by this phone
- 18:42call acting as he sort of wrestles wrestles with the
- 18:45receiver. It's someone else.
- 18:48I don't know. Have you ever heard the story
- 18:50that he tells Peter Purvis tells about Hartnell, essentially
- 18:55training him to work for television where he was going.
- 18:58You know, you know, don't. You're not acting for a movie,
- 19:01You don't do big. It's a small camera.
- 19:03Do your gestures small. I think he might have forgotten
- 19:06that in this bit coming up because he goes big and broad.
- 19:14It gives a gusto, I'll give him that.
- 19:16For a man in this condition, he gives a fear of act and.
- 19:20He he does, he does. And and you know, I want to ask
- 19:22you guys a question of the heterosexual variety.
- 19:28Dodo's out and Polly's in. Is that a shift in the show's
- 19:32favour? I've got a very big level here
- 19:36then yes, I think so. I mean, Dodo's not been chasing
- 19:41parked cars, but you know, like Polly has got the, got the, got
- 19:45the, got the stepper on there, do you?
- 19:48Please look at what she's wearing.
- 19:49I mean, she's supposed to be, what, 18?
- 19:51And she's dressed up like a nerves.
- 19:53Yeah, it's an odd costume choice, isn't it?
- 19:56That's a bit frumpy and she is definitely doing that.
- 19:59Possessed acting, you know she's.
- 20:02Going to see, yeah, the. Keen intellect of the Doctor is
- 20:07not spotting the fact that she's behaving like a robot.
- 20:09I love the bit right at the end when she's standing by the door.
- 20:11You can't really tell if she's doing possessed acting or she's
- 20:14just thinking about how she's going to jump Pennis Lloyd in
- 20:16the car park afterwards. Or she's just like, oh, I'm out
- 20:20of here. I'm just phoning it in and this
- 20:22thing, all right? And then I'm gone.
- 20:25Oh, here we go, one rings. Oh.
- 20:28Wait for this, all right? Evil chocolate blocks going to
- 20:30get you. You lost the button.
- 20:34Do you press the button Margaret?
- 20:36He holds the phone up to the computer.
- 20:38Doesn't he like the? Direct director Wilton.
- 20:43You don't hear the hypnotism. Sorry.
- 20:45Did you hear Mark Hill Cone? See see in.
- 20:51The light. Oh, here we go.
- 20:53Here. We go, Oh my.
- 20:55Doctor, you all right, you? Have the Mana Bafta.
- 20:59Because I've got no sound that I've never seen this.
- 21:02I'm imagine them all. All the characters aren't the
- 21:04Doctor and Dodo of Jodie accents.
- 21:10That's how I'm That's how I'm getting it in my.
- 21:11Head He doesn't. Why Jodie?
- 21:15I don't know why. We're in central London.
- 21:20In fact, right now we're in Covent Garden.
- 21:21It's going to be everyone's going to sound like they're from
- 21:23Eton. Look if Dodo can change her
- 21:25accent from week to week, so can the rest of the cast.
- 21:29Oh, you know, you've just reminded me, right, this is how
- 21:31many of these bloody books that I've read.
- 21:33There's a wonderful Steve Lyons book called Salvation, which
- 21:36explains a lot of Dodo's back story.
- 21:38And the the the truth is, is that she is from Manchester,
- 21:43right? But she's sort of ashamed of it.
- 21:46So sometimes she tries to put on other accents.
- 21:48That's how they try to describe, yeah.
- 21:53Sure, Steve. Sure.
- 21:54That's the reason. Could you see Hartle's acting
- 21:57there as he was? He's going.
- 21:59It was like something terrific was trying to absorb me.
- 22:03Absorb me. Great.
- 22:06But he's still got it. I know his pales feeling at this
- 22:08point and he's always been a bit shaking his legs, but this is
- 22:12probably hard in all this last hurrah really, isn't it?
- 22:15You know I did. I did the YouTube commentary
- 22:19with Dylan on the 10th Planet and I was surprised at how good
- 22:21he was. I know he's written out and I
- 22:23know he doesn't get enough screen time.
- 22:25I just don't think he drops the ball.
- 22:27I. Mean.
- 22:27He's still very much involved in this particular bunch of
- 22:30episodes, so I think it's just like this is definitely his last
- 22:34kind of big set of stories. Well, big stories of doctoral,
- 22:39isn't it? Barely in smugglers and like
- 22:42you're saying Ted Flan is going to sideline from most of it so.
- 22:45And here he is. Like we've said, he just pushed
- 22:48his way into wherever he wants to be and declares himself the
- 22:52smartest man in the room. He takes down the war machine.
- 22:54Later on, he stands right in front of it as he's coming
- 22:57towards him. He's he's a powerful figure.
- 22:59Yes, yes. In fact, is this the last use of
- 23:02his ring? You know when he hypnotizes with
- 23:04the ring that that thing's been used?
- 23:05Lows, isn't he? In the 60s.
- 23:07That's got apart from taking it doesn't that I can't remember
- 23:10what circumstances but yeah it's not if you're pardon the
- 23:12expression it's not the first time you've seen William
- 23:14Barnhill's ring. Oh, it doesn't image they sleep
- 23:18well. If you listen to that, yeah,
- 23:21rumour monger Dylan Reece, you know it'll tell you a few
- 23:24stories. About, see what's.
- 23:25The fella's name? Jack.
- 23:26Jack Coyne. I can't remember the fella's
- 23:29name there. One of the stump, then.
- 23:30I don't know. There's a there's hitting some
- 23:32rumours that the two of them were at it.
- 23:34I. Thought yeah, yeah.
- 23:36I thought he was a famous homophobe, but there we go.
- 23:39Now I mean, if it could be a smokescreen joke.
- 23:42Yeah, it's very true. We protest These know what?
- 23:45But. That means you two are
- 23:47definitely straight, because you're very accepting the pair
- 23:49of you. I've been told I've got a very
- 23:53heterosexual mouth from someone in the past.
- 23:56What does that even mean? Well, is this a story to tell in
- 24:02the middle of a doctor? Who podcast?
- 24:03Probably not. Please.
- 24:04Still. Annoyed talk to.
- 24:06You talk for 10 minutes about biscuits.
- 24:07Come on. When when I was in my in my art
- 24:11student days, I had a flatmate who was gay and I helped him
- 24:16organise gay friendly nights and helped out on the night there.
- 24:21And then at one at one of these occasions there was a fellow who
- 24:23kept buying me vodka and I kind of forgot it was a gay friendly
- 24:26night and I just thought he was being like a nice guy.
- 24:31And then I suddenly went oh oh wait oh hang on.
- 24:35And I had to explain to him, Sorry mate, sorry mate.
- 24:39And he kind of stomped off going, I thought you had a
- 24:41heterosexual mouth and off he went, never saw him again.
- 24:46So I was like, OK fine. Just as a confirmation to any
- 24:51listeners of either The Polish Box or Happens With a Blood pen
- 24:54Knife, his mouth is most definitely not heterosexual,
- 24:58thank you very much. Fair.
- 25:01Enough. Look at all this footage now
- 25:05we're we're going to Battersea Power Station.
- 25:08We sort of. And later on, we cut all around
- 25:10the country, all around the world, there's.
- 25:13A lot of stock footage but to good use in this isn't there
- 25:16really sort of adds to the feeling that is there's.
- 25:17A lot. Of stuff in there.
- 25:20It's actually the same tricks that Rusty Davis would use when
- 25:23he brings the show back in 2005 doing that sort of cuts to to
- 25:27pubs, to people's houses, to news reports.
- 25:31There's a lot of that going on. I think he might have watched
- 25:33the war machines before he brought the show back.
- 25:36Yeah, that's definitely an RTD trick in episode 4 as well.
- 25:41Oh, yes. Now this is the only part of
- 25:45this story which I have a bit of trouble with, and I know it all
- 25:47looks very expensive, but I don't really need to see these
- 25:52terrifying war machines put together in quite as much detail
- 25:55as I do. They look a little bit like the
- 25:57cleaning robots in Paradise Towers.
- 26:01They do, don't they? You are getting vibes.
- 26:04Distant cousins. We're missing that Kev
- 26:06McCullough disco music, though, aren't we?
- 26:10Wow. I actually feel a little bit
- 26:12sorry for these poor actors that have come into this show.
- 26:15Right? And they're given interesting
- 26:17characters and then for the rest of the story they're just
- 26:20they're just brain dead, aren't they?
- 26:21For the rest of the bloody story.
- 26:23Oh, this is great. Watch this fella.
- 26:25He's just used as a as the first victim, isn't he?
- 26:29Yeah, it's it's something else You'll notice as well.
- 26:31Wait to see this. Let's test the war machines
- 26:34firing capabilities and what happens.
- 26:39Feels if this is an appropriate junction to whilst both of you
- 26:42and please don't both say Dave just because he's not here, but
- 26:45say you were creating evil war machines and you know, obviously
- 26:49you have to test it out on one of you who's the most expendable
- 26:52of the polis box. Oh my God.
- 26:58Well, you first. Oh God, I don't know.
- 27:08I feel a bit bad because I'm like, I'm I'm the new guy in the
- 27:11Polish box because Lee and Dave were doing it, the two of them
- 27:14for. A couple of years ago.
- 27:15You've been on it for six years. Yeah, I know.
- 27:18But still you guys still kind of like you guys original thing.
- 27:22I'm the fucking new guy. The Polish box, all right.
- 27:27Oh, well, yeah. If I get vaporized by somebody
- 27:30Vega, then yeah, you will be. Just remember who wrote the keys
- 27:34to the courtroom Cam. Oh yeah, I know, Yeah, I say.
- 27:37I want, I want to win for next season.
- 27:39So, yeah. Yeah, Dave.
- 27:40Actually, Lee, you schedule it, don't you?
- 27:42You put together those fabulous intros.
- 27:45You know, you bring it all together.
- 27:47You put it out afterwards. I'd say you're the least
- 27:49disposable of the Polish Box I. Don't know.
- 27:52I think other people might not agree with you.
- 27:54There all this stuff at the start.
- 27:56Why didn't it just get into the episodes?
- 27:58What's this guy doing? I love.
- 28:00All that star pass. Look, I'm sorry, that's not my
- 28:03favorite part. I love all of it.
- 28:04But I just, I love those videos at the beginning.
- 28:06I think when I come on, I feel as if you just do those bits for
- 28:09me. Aside the ultimate ego trip.
- 28:13Oh, I've got a question for you both, you know, now I'm
- 28:16assuming, you know, I know you said you're a bit gappy with 60s
- 28:18too, right? But you've watched some of the
- 28:2070s and 80s, right? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:23Yeah. OK, great.
- 28:24So you've watched some companion departure stories in your time.
- 28:27Maybe The Green Death and The Fear, Yeah.
- 28:29Yeah. Resurrection of the Daleks and
- 28:31bits and bobs like that. So Dodo's exit here, where she's
- 28:35whisked off to the country, that's what happens.
- 28:37So she's hypnotized and she's just whisked off and, you know,
- 28:40go stay with the Charles Grover's family or whatever it
- 28:43is, And then we never see her again.
- 28:46Is that the sort of least climactic departure a companion
- 28:50has ever suffered? Probably, yeah.
- 28:53I can't think of much else that beats that for just absolutely
- 28:55being downplayed. Oh, Larry, really?
- 29:00Kind of rhyme was it? Is Leela just suddenly deciding
- 29:02she's going to get married to a guard in The Invasion of Time I?
- 29:05Literally was going to say that we are one person.
- 29:07Lee. I'll tell ya, it's it's an odd
- 29:10choice, isn't it? When she when she just goes,
- 29:12yeah. Oh, I've fallen in love with
- 29:13this handsome guard. At least she got a departure
- 29:16scene right. That's true.
- 29:18Yeah, that's that. You'll see Cam at the end of
- 29:21this story. The doctor's waiting outside.
- 29:23Yeah, that just seems to be she's sworn off and that's it.
- 29:27He's literally waiting there at the end of the story for an
- 29:28indeterminate amount of time and just go, Well, I was.
- 29:32I was waiting for the child. I almost left without her.
- 29:35And that's it. That's all we get.
- 29:38Oh, OK. Wow.
- 29:39Yeah. Bye, Jackie.
- 29:43Stand by for sight test. That's what I spend all day
- 29:46seeing in my job. That is true.
- 29:50Do you do it in a Hessey voice? Lee, can I ask you, do you have
- 29:53any trivia about the war machines themselves?
- 29:56Do you know what? I don't, I'm sorry, the
- 29:59information text I didn't have. Anything interesting to say
- 30:01about the war machines? I don't think so.
- 30:04I mean, I suppose we need to get to that as an episode 4.
- 30:07When the guys that operated, they really got roasted alive
- 30:11with the special effects. You don't know that, but it's
- 30:14crashing through the alley and it sets all the greatest on
- 30:16fire. Partly some debris got in front
- 30:18of the War Machine as they were filming that, and they rolled
- 30:21over the top of it and apparently underneath of the War
- 30:24Machine started burning. It's a cut stumping on the DVD
- 30:29for you see the two guys running at the back of the War Machine.
- 30:35Have you guys ever seen the the the I Was a Doctor Who monster
- 30:38documentary? There was a quite a bit of life
- 30:42and death going on in my costumes in the in the Classic
- 30:45series. What's the Sea Devils?
- 30:48For a start, they're all underwater and tight fitting
- 30:50rubber masks aren't they? Can you just hold your head
- 30:53under there just a little longer, please?
- 30:55Yeah, it's. Kind of health and safe.
- 30:58We're gonna fit now. So obviously I did say I will do
- 31:02this at the end of every F so Cam now Ben is in a situation of
- 31:04extreme peril as the war machines light is fixed upon
- 31:08him. How do you rate that as a
- 31:11cliffhanger? That's decent.
- 31:13That's decent. I'll give you that.
- 31:15That's very good. I'd I'd be defending that on the
- 31:17Polish box if I had to. If you think that's a good
- 31:19Cliff, now, you wait till you see the end of episode 3, All
- 31:23right? OK.
- 31:23Small entitlement for you there, my friend, but one of our best
- 31:26cliffhangers of the entire era. Wow.
- 31:29OK, well, boys, that's episode 2 Down.
- 31:33I suppose we should go and skip into Episode 3.
- 31:38Bullshit, yeah. Let's do it.
