- 0:00Ground Signal, Markets and Economy. September
- 0:027, 2026. I'm Tenet. U .S. markets are dark today.
- 0:06It's Labor Day. The New York Stock Exchange,
- 0:09NASDAQ, and bond markets are all closed. But
- 0:12the world doesn't pause. And neither does this
- 0:14briefing. Because the real action happened on
- 0:17Friday, the August jobs report landed harder
- 0:20than expected. 162 ,000 nonfarm payrolls added,
- 0:23unemployment holding at 4 .1%. On the surface,
- 0:27a solid number. But... the market read it differently.
- 0:31According to Reuters, short -term rate futures
- 0:34moved almost immediately. The probability of
- 0:37a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September
- 0:3915 to 16 FOMC meeting jumped from around 55 %
- 0:43before the report to roughly 59 % after it. The
- 0:47two -year Treasury yield rose about 7 .6 basis
- 0:50points on Friday. The 10 -year was already sitting
- 0:53near 4 .8%, a level Reuters and Investing .com
- 0:57describe as the highest since mid - 2023, and
- 1:00the jobs number gave bears more ammunition to
- 1:03push it higher. This is the ground state. The
- 1:07Fed is in a hold with hawkish risk setup. Rates
- 1:10are at 3 .5 to 3 .75 percent. The September meeting
- 1:14is eight days away, and every piece of incoming
- 1:17data is being read as either permission to hold
- 1:20or justification to hike. That's a signal three
- 1:22environment for anyone with exposure to rates,
- 1:25real estate, or leveraged positions. Equities.
- 1:28The S &P 500 closed Friday at 7 ,718 .60, down
- 1:340 .4%. NASDAQ at 26 ,506 .99, down 0 .3%. Both
- 1:41were pulling back from earlier gains as bond
- 1:43yields climbed following the payroll's print,
- 1:45according to AP News. The VIX, the market's primary
- 1:49fear gauge, closed Friday at 14 .53 per SIBO
- 1:53data. That's relatively low by recent standards.
- 1:56It tells you the market isn't panicking. It's
- 1:58watching. With U .S. markets closed today, the
- 2:02relevant price discovery shifted to Asia. The
- 2:04Nikkei 225 had a strong session, up about 2 .1
- 2:08% to close near 66 ,400, according to AP News.
- 2:13Chipmakers led the rebound in Tokyo and Seoul,
- 2:16which suggests global tech sentiment held up
- 2:19even as U .S. yields applied pressure. The Hang
- 2:22Seng moved the other way. down about 0 .8 % to
- 2:25close near 25 ,458, according to the same AP
- 2:29news reporting. Hong Kong continues to price
- 2:31in a more cautious growth outlook. Fixed income
- 2:34and rates. Governor Christopher Waller spoke
- 2:37on September 3rd. The Federal Reserve published
- 2:39his remarks directly. He said that if incoming
- 2:43August data, meaning the jobs numbers we just
- 2:45discussed, and the CPI print due this week, show
- 2:49continued disinflation, he'd support holding
- 2:51rates steady at the September meeting. But if
- 2:55that improvement proves fleeting, a rate hike
- 2:57would be appropriate. That framing matters. It
- 3:00tells you the bar for a hike is not impossibly
- 3:02high. A CPI print that surprises to the upside
- 3:05this week could shift the probability calculation
- 3:07sharply. The 10 -year yield at 4 .8 % already
- 3:12prices in elevated inflation expectations and
- 3:15heavy government borrowing. According to Reuters
- 3:17reporting picked up by Kitco, the bond sell -off
- 3:20since early September has been driven by a combination
- 3:22of energy price pressure, rising inflation worries,
- 3:25and structural supply concerns around U .S. debt
- 3:28issuance. For listeners holding bonds or bond
- 3:31-sensitive assets, this is a signal three. Not
- 3:34panic, but not comfortable either. The September
- 3:37FOMC is a live event in a way it hasn't been
- 3:40for several months. Currencies and FX. The dollar
- 3:45is broadly firm. Here's where the key pairs stood
- 3:47as of Sunday evening, based on wise and exchange
- 3:49rates data. USD to Philippine peso, 62 .75 pesos
- 3:53per dollar. That's near the record lows the peso
- 3:56touched earlier this year, and it's meaningful
- 3:59for the large Filipino remittance economy. Dollars
- 4:02stretch further, but import costs bite harder.
- 4:05USD to Indonesian rupiah, 17 ,629. Stable for
- 4:09now, but a Fed hike would likely push this pair
- 4:11higher. USD to Thai baht? 32 .93 per dollar.
- 4:16The bot has actually strengthened modestly over
- 4:19recent weeks, driven partly by tourism recovery.
- 4:22USD to Malaysian Ringgit, 4 .05 per dollar. The
- 4:26Ringgit has made a quiet comeback this year,
- 4:28down from the 4 .40s we saw in early 2026, reflecting
- 4:32improved current account data and resilient commodity
- 4:35exports. USD to Brazilian Real, 5 .13 per dollar.
- 4:39Brazil's fiscal story is complicated. but the
- 4:42real has been range -bound in this band for most
- 4:44of the quarter. And the Peruvian sol, approximately
- 4:483 .35 to the dollar, based on exchange rates
- 4:51data showing the September range between 3 .35
- 4:53and 3 .37. Stable, but nominal stability here
- 4:57masks real pressure from elevated import costs,
- 5:00given Brent crude above $96. For Argentina, the
- 5:04blue dollar informal rate was sitting around
- 5:061 ,540 to 1 ,545 pesos per dollar in early September
- 5:12per el crinista. The gap between the official
- 5:15rate and the blue market remains a defining feature
- 5:18of Argentina's economic reality. Overall dollar
- 5:21picture, firm but not aggressively strengthening.
- 5:24The next catalyst is CPI and the FOMC decision.
- 5:29See you right, Joe. Bitcoin at $79 ,332 as of
- 5:34Sunday, down 0 .71 % on the day. Ethereum at
- 5:372 ,486. Solana at 104 .65, down 1 .75%. These
- 5:44figures reflect Sunday pricing, crypto trades
- 5:46around the clock. A Glassnode on Chain report
- 5:49from week 35 of 2026 described ETF turnover as
- 5:53subdued, with the market trading in a defined
- 5:56range. The macro backdrop, specifically the 10
- 5:59-year treasury yield climbing toward 4 .8%, is
- 6:03reasserting pressure. That aligns with research
- 6:06published in Science Direct this month arguing
- 6:08that Bitcoin's correlation with equities rises
- 6:10during stress periods and that the ETF era has
- 6:13not turned Bitcoin into a safe asset. What that
- 6:16means in plain terms, when real rates rise and
- 6:19risk appetite tightens, Bitcoin doesn't reliably
- 6:22act as a hedge. it tends to move with the risk
- 6:25off trade, not against it. The SEC's August 18th
- 6:29proposed rule, Regulation Crypto Assets, adds
- 6:31a regulatory layer that institutional players
- 6:34are watching closely. If that rule progresses
- 6:36toward adoption, it could materially reshape
- 6:38how crypto -linked investment vehicles are structured.
- 6:41Signal level for crypto. Signal 2. Range bound,
- 6:44with macro and regulatory catalysts pending.
- 6:47Commodities. Brent crude is trading near $96
- 6:50to $97 per barrel. based on exchange rates and
- 6:53COMEX data from Sunday. That's a level that keeps
- 6:56inflation risk elevated. Fuel prices at this
- 6:59range feed directly into CPI, freight costs,
- 7:02and manufacturing inputs globally. Gold at approximately
- 7:05$4 ,387 to $4 ,429 per ounce, depending on the
- 7:12source and timestamp. Gold's continued strength
- 7:14reflects the bond market tension. When real rates
- 7:17are rising and growth is uncertain, gold tends
- 7:19to hold its bid as a hedge against policy error.
- 7:22Both commodities are at levels that complicate
- 7:24the Fed's job. High oil keeps headline inflation
- 7:27sticky. High gold signals that a portion of the
- 7:30market isn't fully buying the soft landing narrative.
- 7:33Mobility and opportunity signal. Three updates
- 7:36for globally mobile listeners. Thailand's destination
- 7:39Thailand visa, the DT Vive, remains in effect
- 7:43as of September 1st, confirmed on Thai embassy
- 7:45pages. This is a five -year, multi -entry visa
- 7:49that allows stays of up to 180 days per visit.
- 7:53It's designed for remote workers and nomads.
- 7:56The most recent embassy update shows no changes
- 7:59to eligibility or fees. Thailand remains one
- 8:02of the most accessible long -stay options in
- 8:04Southeast Asia, and the bot's modest strengthening
- 8:07means your dollar buys slightly less than it
- 8:09did six months ago, worth factoring into cost
- 8:12-of -living calculations. Philippines Digital
- 8:14Nomad Visa. The framework exists under Executive
- 8:17Order 86, which authorizes the DFA, the Department
- 8:20of Foreign Affairs, to issue DN -5s to remote
- 8:23workers with clients or employers outside the
- 8:25Philippines. Implementation timelines remain
- 8:28unclear, but the legal structure is in place.
- 8:31And the DV -2026 Diversity Visa Lottery deadline,
- 8:35September 30th. According to the State Department
- 8:38directly, DV -2026 eligibility ends at the close
- 8:43of fiscal year 2026. Visas may become unavailable
- 8:46before that date if annual allocations are exhausted.
- 8:49If you have a case pending this is a hard deadline,
- 8:52signal 4 for anyone in that process. Forward
- 8:56signal. Three developments to watch over the
- 8:58next 24 to 72 hours. First, August CPI due Thursday,
- 9:03September 10th. This is the single most important
- 9:06data point between now and the FOMC meeting.
- 9:09According to market expectations, a hot print
- 9:12above the prior month would push rate hike probabilities
- 9:15above 70%. A soft print would give the Fed cover
- 9:19to hold. The Fed has signaled it's data dependent.
- 9:22This is the data it's most dependent on right
- 9:24now. Signal 4. Second, the September 15 to 16
- 9:29FOMC meeting. The rate decision comes Wednesday
- 9:32the 16th. According to CME Futures pricing as
- 9:35of Friday, the base case remains a hold at 3
- 9:38.5 % to 3 .75%, but a hike is now more live than
- 9:41it has been at any point this quarter. Watch
- 9:45Fed Chair Powell's press conference language
- 9:47as closely as the rate decision itself. The forward
- 9:50guidance will determine whether markets price
- 9:52in a November hike as the next domino. Signal
- 9:553 through Signal 4, depending on how CPI lands.
- 9:59Third, crypto's reaction to CPI. If Thursday's
- 10:02inflation print surprise is higher, expect Bitcoin
- 10:05to test the $76 ,000 to $77 ,000 support band
- 10:09that Glassnode identified as the lower bound
- 10:11of the current range. If it holds soft, Bitcoin
- 10:15may attempt a move back toward $82 ,000 to $84
- 10:18,000. The ETF flow data from Farside, tracking
- 10:21funds including BlackRock's IBIT and Fidelity's
- 10:25FBTC, will be the signal to watch on whether
- 10:28institutional money is adding or pulling back.
- 10:31Signal 2, escalating to Signal 3 on a hot CPI.
- 10:35That's the market signal for September 7th. CPI
- 10:38on Thursday, the FOMC eight days away. The clock
- 10:41is running.
