his mother let's 1:59 wait till we got our guest host on the line that might be a great conversation piece okay who is our guest host okay everyone today we actually have a guest 2:06 co-host with us he's not our guest host let's not give him a promotion he'll be our he's not the guest host he's guest 2:12 he's a he's sitting in with us today I like that let's just say Kyle Peterson sitting in with us today he is a friend 2:20 of mine so anyways Kyle's a huge Rocky fan and uh let's see if uh he's got what it takes to go to Toe to Toe with us put 2:27 him against the ropes I've never met Kyle hey guys hey Kyle Kyle what's going on brother but by the way this is Reuben 2:34 nice to meet you oh hey nice to meet you Reuben I've uh I've enjoyed you on the first three episodes well thank you you 2:41 know the fourth one came out today what's holding you back oh you know the wife has me doing 2:46 chores and stuff you know maybe if I behave I might be able to listen to it soon yeah well tomorrow's Mother's Day 2:53 you she should be letting her do all the chores so she can really appreciate tomorrow's day off but I don't want to 2:59 tell you I don't want to tell you how to run your household no that's quite all right that's quite all right hey Kyle it's 3:05 Ryan the other co-host over here how you doing brother oh I'm doing great man I'm excited to uh be on the podcast are we 3:13 recording this right now dude we're always recording the mic is always on we 3:19 literally don't know how to edit so like everything's recorded we we we'll be we'll be fine I 3:25 do the editing uh I'll make us sound pretty don't worry okay okay 3:30 so Kyle tell us a little bit about about yourself I mean why would you Mr Kyle want to be on a rocky podcast talk about 3:37 Rocky well uh I'm a a lifelong fan of Rocky like I don't know when I can't 3:42 remember the first time I ever watched it but I've liked Rocky since I was a little kid uh my parents both like Rocky 3:49 more my mom but like we used to have rocky marathons as a family that's awesome which of course was the was the 3:56 first five they didn't have U Rocky Bell Bo or Creed now I don't know if I don't 4:01 know have you guys tried to do a rocky marathon with all seven now I don't know if I could do that in a day but no no I 4:08 I haven't tried it I'd have to drink a lot of raw eggs to get me through it though yeah yeah me too Kyle of course yeah I 4:16 haven't tried it yet either put this way if I had an extra 15 16 hours in my day 4:21 I would do it in a heartbeat and I would do it happily but it's just the lack of a the lack of time set aside it makes it 4:28 impossible I like the idea of being lethargic for a whole entire day Couch Potato watching somebody be 4:34 athletic and making their dreams come true yeah you know well I I say if 4:41 people can binge on Netflix and watch like uh all Breaking Bad or something 4:46 like that that's pretty much the same Rocky fan um I I I've I went to 4:52 Philadelphia saw the statue ran up the steps you know like I'm just I'm 4:57 committed I'm the odd man out here you need to go that that should be like the FI you should do the final episode of 5:03 your podcast from like on on the Rocky Steps or something like that I got to get my uh Visa sure that might be 5:10 expensive and you know your quote unquote families may not like it but you 5:15 know well my my wife would she would totally support and understand my dream to do that one day and who knows by the 5:22 time we get to Creed and finish up this Rocky series maybe we'll have a few dollars put away you never know start 5:28 saving now or you know can get a sponsor maybe like I I hear Shamrock meets is willing to sponsor pretty much 5:35 anything that's right oh my gosh hey he Kyle digging deep with that uh with that 5:41 reference there you know uh Johnny Carson didn't like having guest hosts that were better than him so I feel like 5:50 we should just end this uh with you right now yeah we're we're come 5:55 on all I can do is quote I have like I have no real insights or anything thing 6:02 so you you quote something and we'll give the Insight on it okay fair enough 6:08 all right well where did you uh where do you think we're starting today's episode I'm I'm just curious where you think 6:13 we're starting you said trading Montage that's what I prepared for but I've been preparing my whole life for this we are 6:20 starting with the training montage so that's that's exactly where we're going to start off today's episode so without 6:26 further Ado welcome everybody to episode 6 of the uh Going the Distance Rocky 6:32 series podcast he the [Applause] 6:55 music did you guys get that music by the way my friend and uh Julianne her and 7:01 her husband came over to the house and she she brought that she bought a trumpet I said well why did you start 7:07 playing the trumpet goes well you know that movie the ridiculous six with Adam Sandler on Netflix well there's a 7:13 mirachi band on there with the trumpet and it just inspired her to buy a trumpet and learn how to play I'm like 7:19 wow that's interesting cuz I'm sure she's like heard Rocky or heard other great music but an Adam Sandler movie 7:26 got heard of the trumpet so shout out to Julianne and I said hey would you want to do something for the podcast and she 7:34 said sure and so that was like her first couple attempts doing it it it it has 7:39 that um home spun quality to it yeah that's what I like about it I'm like 7:46 where did they source that but then that makes makes a lot of sense yeah I really like it no there's no interruptions this 7:52 is a round table we uh talk and just talk about anything you want really that's a great question I'm sure our 10 7:57 fans out there actually might want to know where we got that music so that thanks for asking that question at least 10% of the fan base 8:04 right go ahead Ruben s okay before we start the podcast I said to Ryan I got a 8:10 fart so he I'm like it's not going to stink but he still put his a shirt above 8:16 his nose as if that's really going to filter out it it actually works uh I 8:22 work in the Navy and we work in we work in tight spaces tight tight working spaces and let me tell you when people 8:29 you know we're long hours at Sea you can't just leave the operations room to to to pass gas you have to do it in 8:35 place does anybody leave a room to pass gas people do leave the room to pass gas do you um it depends uh I I I just let 8:43 it with my with my in-laws I would really yeah you know it's funny I uh I lived with the Ukrainian guy in his 8:50 culture it's like really rude to fart in front of someone well we're actually cord Ukrainian and we we're letting our 8:56 people down you have some some uh you have some splaining to do uh the reason 9:02 why I actually kind kind of bring that up is when you're exercising it's really hard you can't you can't keep a a fart 9:09 in when you're pre exercising you're doing crunches you're doing burpees it comes out and so I would imagine if the 9:18 mic was a little bit lower the boom mic it would have caught a lot of Breaking Wind with those uh training sequences So 9:25 speaking of training sequences let's talk about uh Rocky's training mod Montage I wonder if Mr Stallone I wonder 9:31 if he when he was down doing those crunches and remember the the black guy 9:37 that uh was hit hitting him with a medicine ball and slapp yeah well no no no the black guy was punching him in the 9:43 stomach second was it the second one that oh that's right the second one was a slap into the stomach hey no spoiler 9:49 alerts there Kyle sorry yeah the second one I'm 9:55 joking yeah it's such a such a spoiler alert that a black guy slaps Rocky stomach in the second movie Rocky shall 10:01 we into that anyways let's talk about the training montage uh the first exercise do we 10:07 remember no I I just watched this probably half an hour ago the trading Montage opens up with him running in 10:14 what like appears to be not quite a junkyard but it's like a really industrial area of Philadelphia he has a 10:22 brick in each hand as he's running like he's really improvised there he's running on the train tracks Yeah Yeah 10:28 well yeah he you see him running and there's like uh there's like an elevated train in the background and then you see 10:35 him run on a train track and there's like like a factory to his right okay 10:40 like a Big Smoke Stack and he's running with bricks in his hands oh I don't remember the bricks oh my oh my goodness 10:48 Kyle yeah he's running with bricks it's kind of like in the 80s the get in shape 10:54 girl kind of took took off with that idea those little uh those weighted uh things that they would run with 11:01 B andb that's do keep it up get in shape girl 11:11 you love the feeling get in shap girl it's so feeling 11:19 now you can work it out with bangle bop's weighted bracelets and show it off with rhythm and ribbons they both come 11:24 with cassette and workout posters get in shape girl get in shape girl from Hasbro 11:30 I love that you know K maybe I've noticed you know what I mean it's one of those things like do you notice it but you don't make a note of it in your 11:36 brain yeah like in in the previous episode when you talked about how he took the ball off the counter I never 11:42 noticed that either I did I did an interview with the rocky impersonator and it's going to be coming up on a future episode and he is his name is 11:49 Mike kunda and he is a huge huge obviously he's a rocking impersonator 11:54 does the tours in Philadelphia yeah and a great guy great interview I'm really looking forward to releasing it he heard 12:00 about that scene where I talked about that was the first time we saw the ball and he couldn't believe he goes no that can't be right cuz he told me he seen 12:06 the movie 800 plus times yeah so he went back and corrected me and it's and he calls me out during the interview and 12:12 you'll see that or hear that call out in in the interview but that's what I mean it's funny how it's funny how I thought 12:18 that was the first time it came on screen cuz I I was noticing that for the first time but it was as it turns out 12:24 wasn't the first time but we he put the ball there before and was just picking it up yeah but my brain was like Hey 12:30 There It Is the first time we see the ball oh right yeah oh okay like we've said before in previous podcast we are 12:36 not subject matter experts we don't take notes on everything and we really don't know what we're talking about we're just 12:42 fans so so you're basically a standard podcast then yeah yeah we yeah that's 12:48 why we haven't got any sponsors yet he does the the train track ride the next part of the training montage is he's 12:54 running through the streets uh kind of down the alley and people are looking at him jogging by and he's waving at people 13:00 and you remember the guy that throws the fruit yeah of course yeah yeah that's improvised those are not extras yeah 13:07 that's right and it's funny like you see people looking at them like what on Earth is going on yeah it's a band 13:13 driving down the street with a camera outside of it yeah and this this there's nobody at the at the time like no one 13:19 knew who Sly was it's like why is this guy filming himself running down our 13:24 street this was before we had like mass media that we have today but these people weren't they knew what a camera 13:31 was they knew what a camera you even a big camera they probably thought this was a news special maybe a 13:36 documentary or something to the effect I they might have thought it was a movie but because they were allowed to freely 13:42 roam around the street it was just a van driving down the street they might have thought this guy is an athlete and maybe 13:47 he's being filmed for a news piece or something yeah who knows what they thought but yeah probably something along those lines that that seemed like 13:54 kind of a rougher area right so like I think when most people if they film something they probably wouldn't go to a 14:00 rough neighborhood in Philly but like for for obvious reasons you would in Rocky so it's like I have like a vague 14:07 memory of slly an interview about this and he was talking about how he was like going into their little world and how he 14:14 was like I think he described himself like something like an alien or something like that and he was like he 14:20 was also really wondering like what on Earth do these people think of me like I I I think like that's Pro like they're 14:26 pretty tight-knit communities there hm interesting so I think they probably would have thought it was was pretty odd 14:32 someone's just going to go through their Community with a camera and film it which like you said today is uh kind of 14:39 part for the course you know you film everything I I lived in New Jersey for a 14:44 few years and being in the I'm white for the listeners that don't know yeah we're 14:50 white Kyle yeah well funny I uh was itun 14:55 funny the first White Reuben that I've known wow you know other Ruben interesting 15:02 well there was the uh American Idol season 2 winner was a black man named Reuben the winner of American Idol 2003 15:11 is Reuben [Applause] 15:17 stard yeah so yeah yeah I there's not a lot of black not a lot of white Rubin out there um the Hurricane Carter 15:25 exactly yeah yeah yeah here's here's a question a little tangent I used to work 15:30 at a home hardware type of store this old man comes in he has an order I go to the back I get the order from I see on 15:37 the slip of paper that his name is Reuben I take him to the till I do the the transaction I said hey by the way my 15:45 name is Reuben too go oh do your parents ever tell you why they named you Reuben and I said no he's like mine either he 15:52 walked away so so Ruben is not a super uh common 15:58 name uh even in the even in the white Community back to me living in New 16:04 Jersey and being in uh sometimes well a black neighborhood where I'd be the only 16:09 white person there people do look at you differently you're Fish Out of Water yeah very true and now that we're 16:16 getting this background of the of the community of people rewatching the training montage actually brings up a 16:21 kind of a new life so I'm going to go back as I always do and I'm going to rewatch this training montage and kind 16:27 of look at the people's faces in the background and you definitely see people looking at the camera and looking at uh Stallone running through the street one 16:34 thing I liked when I watched the training montage is that there's a couple barrels of fire burning yes we 16:40 don't see that anymore or we don't have enough barrels burning do we no yeah the 16:45 barrel burning industry has really taken a hit in the recent decades I think a 16:51 big governments to to blame yeah they've outsourced birning barrels to China I think what what what 16:58 I love about the birning Barrel is the story behind it because somebody had to bring the barrel there uhhuh somebody 17:03 brought the fuel cuz for a fire you need to have fuel ignition and air there's 17:09 stuff you're bringing to the barrel to burn and I just like the idea like is there a barrel guy that goes down the 17:15 street and makees sure the barrels are good to go like well I think they're burning garbage cuz like it's funny like 17:22 if you look on that street there's garbage everywhere like it's some kind of market right some kind of open market 17:28 and there's like cardboard boxes and like uh discarded like produce or 17:34 whatever all over the place and it's I I think like instead of throwing a lot of 17:40 it out they burn it interesting I think you're absolutely right good cash Kyle boy you are a subject matter expert on 17:47 burn barrel burning number one and I got my degree in Barrel burning actually oh 17:52 good still paying off those loans well yeah you know it's not a cheap program 17:57 no no it wouldn't be what do you do with the loan bills when they come in do you burn them in barrels yes of 18:05 course that's are beautiful that's a beautiful area he's running in yeah what's the name of that river that he's 18:10 running by well that it's probably the Delaware River right cuz like Philly is not on the coast right it's but it's 18:17 there's the docks and stuff because the Delaware River goes out to the Atlantic okay how long did you were in 18:25 Philadelphia for we there for business oh no I just you know when I was 23 I 18:31 just decided I wanted to take a trip and so I went out to New York Philly and DC 18:36 just by myself good for around wow and uh you know I'm I'm kind of I don't know 18:41 I'm I'm a bit of a nerd so I like looking at maps and stuff and so before my trip I'd look at maps of everything 18:47 and that's that's one thing I noticed because I always thought Philly was on the coast from Rocky because you know 18:53 when he's at the Docks and he's collecting from Bob you know you see that big ship in the background y yeah 18:59 and then really Philly's just across the river from New Jersey yeah so it's actually Inland a bit but that River 19:06 gives it like access to you know makes it a port interesting I thought it was on the coast as well I never unlike you 19:13 I don't look at any Maps just uh look that Rocky you just yeah you just uh 19:19 take it as it comes I guess I don't know yeah it's funny I same same here the docks the ocean I just I know there's a 19:26 lot of water around there somewhere never never figured out what the source might have been so that's cool I think 19:32 we just so I see him running by this bridge so that's the point I'm at right now we're there too we'll go with you 19:38 let's talk about that speed B punching this is something you can't fake there's no CGI back then oh no there there's 19:45 kind of CGI wasn't there like Star Wars and nope CGI was introduced my 19:50 understanding CGI was introduced with the the CGI that we're talking about not special effects CGI all right I'm 19:56 talking special effects okay we're talking Compu I I think if there was a special effect you could fake a punching 20:02 bag for it they probably couldn't afford it like it's just easier to just have him learn how to punch his speed bag 20:09 which I'm sure which all he he does he does and I think he I think Stallone in his own right and why not I think he 20:16 Prides himself in his speed bag punching ability well he's he's an athlete world class athlete how many people do you see 20:22 like that yeah like he's it's funny you see like these if you go special 20:27 features for any of movies and you talk to people who boxes they all say they have a lot of respect for his boxing press even though he's never been a 20:34 professional fighter and it's funny I don't know if this is a spoiler or not but in in Creed you see him work the 20:41 speed bag that's the only time you see Rocky uh do any training is the speed 20:46 bag so I think he likes it he definitely likes it what I love and it's funny that he brought up the Creed because I was 20:51 going to bring it up too but he didn't bring it the part that I wanted to so thank you so yeah so number one stone I 20:58 think does pride himself a little bit in the speed bag ability uh two I noticed in that scene that he's going toe-to-toe 21:04 with with Michael B Jordan on the speed bag I think we see the young actor the old actor going at the speed bag as long 21:10 as they can and I think Michael wins and you see the rocky charact the rocky character SL Stallone character kind of 21:17 do a joke and like ah darn it you beat me type thing but I think it was legit that Mike uh that that Stallone actually 21:24 really did get out of Step first during that recording you know I did consider that but in 21:30 retrospect I think you're right and I think if I think if Sloan kept going and didn't didn't miss the speed bag Rhythm 21:37 they would have kept it as such I don't think it was I don't think it was scripted that he was going to Fumble before Michael um a little trivia for 21:44 you uh he learned about uh speed bagging at party at kitties and 21:52 studs that's going to say the joke writes itself oh yeah you know 21:59 I don't know what to say to that I've seen those same extras that you've seen regarding Stallone and those 22:05 boxing people like the people in the business of boxing have talked about Stallone's ability to box and I think I 22:10 wonder though is Stallone the type of person that just good at what he does because he just puts everything in it 22:16 like if he was doing a firefighting movie would they say oh this guy would have been a great firefighter well Cliffhanger might be a good example 22:22 where you see you know a foam mattress underneath him or something like that but clearly he's again a world class 22:28 athlete yeah he was hanging on that Cliff those muscles aren't airbrushed I don't 22:33 think he gets it seems like he gets in better shape as the series go along 22:39 right now I don't know like if you guys want to talk I don't know how much you guys want to talk about the other movies 22:44 in here like if you want to do uh keep it straight okay so it's like Rocky one and two he's obviously in 22:51 pretty good shape now I'd say Carl Weathers is in better shape but yes you know by Rocky 3 he's pretty he's like 22:59 noticeably different yeah so like D's in good shape in all of the movies but Rocky 3 there's a huge transition where 23:06 he's just he's cut like every muscle you could see yeah and I think he has like 23:11 like 1% body fat or something like that like he really starts to kind of get hardcore at that point that was during 23:17 the ramble phase too obviously and then but I think his best physique if I there's only one man in particular that 23:23 I've admired their physique throughout the years that that has been stallones like you I've watched that transition that his body goes through from Rocky 1 23:30 to 4 especially Rocky 4 I would say that was his Peak look his Peak Performance 23:36 was Rocky four when he takes off that he was bulkier in four but like in a good way yeah when he took off that robe the 23:43 Drago fight and we are get a little bit ahead cuz we'll talk about that fight of course but when he takes off that robe 23:48 I'm like man that is a body oh jeez look at the 23:53 button yeah he must work out to me like yeah already skipping ahead but draga 24:00 did not seem as intimidating after that and that's the idea I love how it's silly now to talk about but I love how 24:07 back in the 80s you know the physique idea was like a Measure of a Man me 24:14 [Music] 24:20 of it's the fire in the eyes the lines on the hand and the things you 24:27 understand per the ti from you ran 24:32 that's the ma of a man that's 24:41 of yeah yeah yeah yeah now we know it means nothing but definitely in the 24:46 Rocky Universe the physique is is ideal and important so let's go back to uh the next part of the training montage okay 24:53 so I believe he's uh at this point doing some one armed push-ups that's right he's flipping back and forth one arm 25:00 push-ups and then you can see Michael uh mouthing what number he's at so he's he 25:06 was just at 49 when I paused it yeah and that's the guy in the in the episode four Kyle we talked about this character 25:13 he's throughout the whole movie he's the one that told Rocky that his stuff was on Skid Row yeah yeah yeah that's right 25:20 and so it's funny that he's now in Rocky's Corner helping him count his push-ups it seems to me like Michael 25:26 really didn't have anything against against him he was just like he he does whatever Mickey wants him to do and if 25:33 Mickey doesn't like Rocky then he's moving his stuff to skidrow and if he does like Rocky he's counting his push-ups all right so the one-arm 25:39 push-ups are done and now we have Michael the white man uh hitting him yes 25:45 it's not a it's not the black man slap in his stomach I jumped ahead the training montage it's uh Michael hitting 25:51 him with a medicine ball in I read a book about this like when I was in the 25:57 seventh grade D is talking about that specific scene and he said that like 26:02 almost killed him getting hit with that medicine ball like he Mike wasn't like just tapping him for the movies like he 26:09 was really hitting him with that he felt like his insides were being destroyed I'm sure they were that's interesting it 26:15 seems like Sly like it seems like a real recurring theme and this is especially true in the upcoming fight but it's like 26:21 they're not faking it and I think that translates really well into making the movie kind of more authentic right 26:28 cheesy or corny do you think Bert Reynolds if he got the rooll he would have taken the med medicine ball to the gut yeah not a 26:35 chance yeah not a chance not a chance oh man can you imagine K what's 26:42 your thoughts on Bert Reynolds being Rocky um no well this is the thing you 26:47 know like we're so used to Sly being Rocky that the thought of anyone else being Rocky is just absurd but that 26:55 being said I think I think Stallone was the only real person that can do it and like 27:02 you guys were talking in your previous episode like what he was kind of going through in his personal life which 27:07 really mirrored Rocky here I just don't think someone like Bert Reynolds could 27:12 have acted sufficiently for that like you almost need an underdog actor play the underdog fighter or it wouldn't work 27:19 well he wouldn't have taken the punishment for that to happen no no like it would have it would have been 27:25 cheesier now granted they probably would have had a better budget for the film because they uh like you guys were 27:32 saying before it was a million dooll budget but one of the reasons why was because Stallone like they sold Stallone 27:39 that script based on uh the condition that he would start it so they didn't really have a lot of faith in the movie 27:46 but said I think it still would been pretty cheesy like we mentioned in episode four they haven't heard yet is 27:52 it would be fun to watch that alternate universe film just out of fun to see what it would have been like this see a 27:58 different actor in the role that they've considered yeah it it's well the thing is is that like if you're used to like 28:05 Rockies become such a big thing anyone but Sly is totally unacceptable you think they'll ever remake the Rocky film 28:11 that they do with some other franchises yeah know no you you fast forward 15 28:16 years the loan might still be alive but be a whole new generation now he owns 28:22 the rights so he' have the ability to sell or not sell his rights to do so okay then pass for 25 years when he's 28:28 dead his fames out for the money yeah yeah yeah see I almost saw Creed is kind 28:33 of a way of doing that like a better way obviously it's not a remake but like 28:39 they're in that movie they're obviously trying to tie a lot of parallels to the first one yeah it's basically Creed the 28:45 force awakens yeah exactly because I don't I don't think people would take too well to a rocky I you know you 28:52 remake movies but I I don't know I personally like well fans like myself 28:57 certainly wouldn't like I I'd be really offended if they did a rocky remake like that but what's a good remake well True 29:05 Grit was a good one True Grit yeah yeah absolutely um with uh Russell Crow and 29:11 no no True Grit with uh Jeff Bridges I was thinking of a but 310 Yuma is another good REM three1 Yuma that's what 29:17 I was thinking but true gr yeah that was actually a very good remake so there are some movies but I guess we can say movies like 310 to Yuma and True Grit 29:23 those come to mind because the originals though may be liked by many people don't really have a following so to speak the 29:31 way Rocky or Star Wars or something else does so like you you couldn't say that oh nobody else can be rooster like John 29:38 Wayne did but Jeff Bridges did do a pretty darn good job as a character yeah he did he did you're right but you know 29:44 what if they ever do do a rocky to quote Rocky to uh Apollo Creed Rocky 3 you got 29:51 me [Laughter] curious that's a good Valentine's card 29:57 yeah yeah oh well let's not please we're talking about the Rocky one Montage we are not going to jump in because the 30:04 Rocky 3 Montage I don't even want to don't know what we're seeing in our head right now we're not going to talk about it until we get to Rocky 3 yeah you guys 30:11 going to bring me back on for that one yes I have I have a word to say to about that 30:21 Montage part of me want you right now but I I don't want to uh we we we we 30:27 have to make the fans have to wait Kyle the fans have to wait I just remember feeling no I'm just saying when you get 30:32 around to doing it sure sure sure we'll love to have you on not going anywhere I just remember as a kid feeling very 30:38 uncomfortable wait we'll stop there we'll stop there 30:43 okay Rocky 3 the greatest Montage ever okay so now he's getting hit so Rocky's 30:49 getting hit in the medicine ball with uh with Michael boy Michael has really played a lot large role in this Montage so far well it's funny Michael 30:56 disappears but comes back in Rocky five I noticed and I I watched it recently 31:02 okay well we'll we'll talk about that when we get to Rocky five it's so hard it's so hard to talk about Rocky without 31:08 talking about the other films it's almost because it really is one big story but true yeah yeah Michael disappears Michael moved on after that 31:15 fight I guess but maybe he got a job in another gym maybe it was like a um a Dinklage scenario where he thought he's 31:22 better off without Rocky dunan dunan dunan from um American Idol thank you 31:28 when American Idol burst onto American television screens in 2002 the show had 31:33 two hosts some don't remember that there was Ryan crest of course but there was this guy Brian dunman dunman did not 31:41 come back for season two did he quit was he fired did Crest force him out 31:47 whatever the reason dunman missed out on a chance to make millions Secrest certainly did we recently traveled to 31:54 Los Angeles to catch up with Brian dunan who for years was tormented by What 32:00 Might Have Been Dinklage is the Game of Thrones [ __ ] father I'm 32:06 guilty guilty is that what you want to hear you admit you poisoned the king no 32:13 of that I'm innocent I'm guilty of a far more monstrous crime I'm guilty of being 32:21 a dwarf you're not on trial for being a dwarf oh yes I am 32:28 I've been on trial for that my entire 32:34 life I thought you making a short joke that he 32:39 disappeared no sorry what are they what are they supposed to call them dwarfs or Little People well I I I we 32:47 saw one I was with my daughter she's five and we saw one and I saw one like it's leprechaun he's spotted one hiding 32:55 behind the produce and I just clarify that they're they're not called midgets 33:01 or dwarfs they prefer to be called small people and she said if I was a [ __ ] I would want to be called a dwarf because 33:08 sounds much cooler it does so are we just normal see that's what I don't like they're called little people are we just 33:14 people to them we're big people okay fair enough unless like they're in China 33:20 or Papa n guini so if you're a little person in China would you just be called a smaller person 33:29 all right think be smaller wow okay so we've we've offended 33:38 uh a billion a billion people already the good news is I don't think we we have any a we don't have any Asian 33:43 listeners B I don't know why I'm laughing Okay you Okay Kyle you're still there have we 33:50 lost you oh yes yeah I'm just uh like the Michael Jackson eating the popcorn 33:55 meme right now okay so let's go back to that Montage Reuben speaking of his her back in the next part of the Montage he's uh 34:03 doing the uh backwards sit-ups against the ringside yeah he's really going down far that's a lot harder than a normal 34:10 sit up and my understanding is I'm not a big Fitness freak but I've talk to people who do situps and proper situps 34:16 that back action is actually not very good no it's not that that's why I don't do it well you're still able you're 34:22 still allowed to do sit-ups Ruben just don't do them on the back side of a ring uh okay all right all right I'll get 34:28 back into it I'll get back into it I I have to get down to my fighting weight and the next scene of the Montage 34:35 is what there pounding me really yeah sorry oh you're right okay I'm kitties 34:41 he's got so the owner don't mind NE there he's uh now that he's a contender 34:48 yeah he goes in there he tenderizes the beef for the packaging he he he does some Carpio you know he gets that 34:55 Carpio you poo no I'm not very refined 35:01 Kyle it's like this uh I don't know if it's raw it seems like raw meat but it's pounded like super super thin you like 35:08 Italian restaurants oh wow anyways like the Olive Garden yes I yes like the 35:14 Olive Garden oh we go back to the uh one arm push-ups after the meat pounding yeah and then Michael's like you're got 35:20 to kill them that's right and then he kind of gives it and you know what's funny I actually think that's really 35:26 important like the training really build you up as a viewer okay like Rocky 35:31 really has a chance like Rocky you know he's doing all this stuff like I think 35:37 he's uh like everyone's really positive at this point sure it's like it's like The A Team when there's like trouble 35:44 happening how are they going to do it and then Ace has a plan they're all working together and you're like oh they 35:51 figure out how to beat the bad guys that's what it is yeah the training montage and all the films 35:58 has that buildup moment everyone looks forward to that music kicking in as much 36:04 as I love watching the training montages on YouTube here and there just for fun it doesn't have the same effect unless 36:11 you go through the whole journey in the movie to that point of course not no sure yeah cuz prior to this it was like 36:17 a given assumption that Rocky's going to lose and an accurate Rocky says that he says like you know the fight set and 36:24 then it's like when he starts training you start to think okay well maybe maybe not like he's really showing some 36:30 promise here so it starts to kind of get in your mind that it's like at least Rocky has a chance at this point very 36:36 good point yeah as a viewer when you go through the Journey here with with Rocky 36:42 you see his attitude change about the fight his attitude changed about himself and he's now really taking the old all 36:48 all the stars of a line for him he has a love of his life his trainer Mickey who he has admired but been neglected by for 36:55 the past six years they're now on the same page yeah everything's Al line for Rocky in his head he's like man I I've 37:00 got a real shot here I'm I'm fast forward in my career but I've got a chance here to go to to Toe with the 37:06 champ Make some noise and what what's great is the running sequence for me 37:12 that's that's my favorite part we're just going to play it live [Music] 37:17 [Applause] here man he's just giving it yeah he's running flat out like I 37:25 think he's running maximum speed right now oh got to PA pause it there yeah he that 37:31 that oomph that maximum speed that's what you want like that's what yeah and 37:37 that was improvised shot too I remember he was saying that in an interview like they were just kind of running around trying to give many shots and like hey 37:43 look there's a ship run as fast as you can oh it works it does work and then right after that incredible Sprint on 37:50 the docks here with the ship Hallowed Ground gentlemen Hallowed Ground indeed now the first time he ran these steps 37:57 huffing and puffing holding in his side but ladies and gentlemen the second time we see him attack these steps he 38:04 conquers them turns towards the city of his his hometown hands up in the air and 38:10 that scene can you get more classic than that scene Kyle with his hands in the air looking at that statue looking at that City no no and that's why this 38:18 movie this is a classic American film and that's probably one of the most well-known scenes in that entire film 38:25 and you know people like myself and uh Ruben and all these other people like all like decades later run up the steps 38:31 and do the same thing I can't think of a lot of movies where you have something comparable to that I can't think of 38:38 anything I'm actually going to give that some thought what is another movie where people go to Ryan and I live few doors 38:44 down from uh the X-Men Xavier University yeah you know where they filmed X-Men 38:51 one Victoria yeah it's the Royal RADS University Building is the exterior they 38:56 do something interior shots but they actually do a lot of the exterior shots in the X-Men film is that University 39:02 here in Victoria and I've never gone there thinking it's also Lex Luthor's house on Smallville but the point being 39:09 is that we're right by there like oh hey that's it and it's and it's more of a huh but it doesn't Inspire anybody there 39:17 actually is a wolverine lookalike not lookalike what's what's the term personator personator that that does 39:23 tours there once in a while so he's like his own Rocky tour guy yeah yeah yeah but he's X-Men version of that yeah I 39:30 don't even know if he still does it because who really cares that much like superheroes is like oh that's cool Rocky 39:37 it's art imitating life and so it inspires people to want to be a part of 39:43 that to do better to make their life something yeah like it's uh like this 39:48 has become synonymous with overcoming a challenge yeah oh yeah yeah so it's like 39:55 you know people like that really struck a cord with people like I think a lot of people could very easily put themselves 40:02 in Rocky shoes in this situation and and their own Chuck tailor yes 40:08 exactly now enough really enough cannot be said about this training montage and what it does for people I mean if you go 40:15 on uh Twitter uh and type in Rocky as a search or on Facebook type in Rocky out 40:21 of every 10 Rocky references there would be somebody saying about to do my workout I need this or I need this lift 40:28 today I was having a bad day this uh footage thousands of people a day if not 40:33 a week thousands and thousands of people drawing strength and inspiration and 40:38 motivation from the music the imagery and the character on a daily basis I'm 40:44 just uh hash going toly now on Facebook to see what what uh pumps up pumps up 40:50 there what pops up there and people working out uh exercising at the gym Etc 40:57 yeah so every single day people are inspired by what Stallone did 40 40 40 41:02 years ago incredible uh Men's Health Magazine they created a rocky workout 41:09 the author of the workout uh BJ gdor he's like a head um editor at Men's 41:16 Health so he created um a workout to do and that was like just this past December I guess you could say probably 41:22 in coincide with Creed but yeah people want to work out like Rocky they want to do that 41:27 it's it's a viable people want to emulate that workout they want they want to be Stallone not Stallone they want to 41:34 be Rocky you want to conquer we should try to get him on an interview actually now that you're bringing it up R well 41:40 I'm glad that you brought that up I have emailed him oh and to be continued okay 41:45 we'll stand by if we get a response exactly okay at the end of every Rocky movie it is basically is all the stuff 41:54 happening at once the training montage the fight the aftermath math so let's get into the next the next scene the 42:00 night before the fight yeah yeah this is my favorite my favorite scenes in the whole movie agreed Kyle and why don't 42:07 you go ahead and tell tell tell us why it's your favorite one of your favorite scenes in the movie oh okay like we we 42:12 were just at the training montage when you're feeling really positive the night uh before the fight things kind of get 42:19 real and I think a lot of people can relate to that like when you have a big event coming up in your life you're kind 42:24 of pumped for it you may be a little nervous but right before it shows up things kind of crash in on you and you 42:30 see how rocky deals with that there I actually um when I did the review for 42:37 this scene uh I took some notes about his apartment specifically I don't know 42:42 if we want to go into that much detail but I I I noted every change I could see in his apartment since uh since he was 42:50 with Adrien from when we saw it earlier in the film oh yeah because she's moved in she's a roommate now yeah they're 42:56 roommates bunking together but you know what's interesting is uh they're they're keeping their relationship honest have 43:02 you noticed that yeah he was sleeping on the couch it's kind of cute in its own which 43:09 which Paulie would be happy about Mickey too Mickey too yeah because 43:16 that's right because woman oh that's it probably has more to do with Mickey now you said that it was probably a training 43:22 issue cuz I I think that first date was uh I think Rocky's legs were 43:28 weakened I think yes I think there was no strength in those I guess that's a real thing by the I don't know if it's 43:35 real is and it's like that actually but people really do believe that I don't know if you've talked about that in the 43:40 previous episodes I think we I think we touched on it the idea being that that that grit or that hunger or 43:48 that anger or whatever just that a man may feel if he's not relieved of sexual 43:53 tension is then expelled in the ring yeah you know he he'd be more tense he'd be more jittery he'd be more on 44:00 edge yeah what I heard as well and I actually Ronda Rousey of all people was 44:06 talking about this have woman weakened her legs well no that's the 44:12 thing well that could be you know that you know that you could have a point there but what she was saying is is that 44:20 for men the the release of testosterone is uh when in leg weakening 44:26 activities is uh is detrimental to their fighting but apparently for women 44:31 Fighters it's the opposite oh wow so Rhonda tries to get as much as she can before a fight she says so basically Two 44:39 fighters of the opposite sex or whatever yeah two fighters of the opposite sex probably shouldn't be in a relationship 44:45 no way no way that they oh yeah yeah wouldn't happen that's funny why don't 44:52 you talk about some of the apartment changes I I like that talk about that because those apartment changes you would have seen just before he goes to 44:59 the ring yeah yeah so I I think this is a symbol for how his life has changed in 45:05 the short period of time because uh when you see his apartment originally he's very lonely they have that kind of they 45:12 have that music on which is a little bit a little bit sad but not just not positive 45:18 music now though it's kind of more it's quiet obviously because it's night time 45:23 but you the opening scene you see the wall around the Rocky Marciano picture that 45:30 he has up so the thing you'll notice right away is there's a ton of newspaper articles around Rocky now is uh he's a 45:36 celebrity of sorts you see Newsweek up there you see Tempo magazine which I don't think's a real magazine I think it 45:43 looks a lot like what Time Magazine should look like you know probably cuz of copyright or whatever uh newspaper 45:49 articles they have a Santa beard on Rocky Marciano yes I always love that I love that uh they have a Christmas tree 45:56 up which is a kind of on a personal note the star on that Christmas tree is the exact same star I had as a kid which for 46:03 some reason is a kid I never noticed that but I noticed it now oh wow you one thing I really liked actually is when it 46:10 pans over towards the bed where Adrien is like you see Rocky in the couch and it pans Towards the bed where she is you 46:17 see like a on a table or something you see a picture of Rocky and Adrien together yeah we're looking at it right 46:24 now Kyle yeah and then you around it you see a bunch of like Christmas cards and stuff like that like like the 46:30 apartment's kind of a lot more human now right he probably doesn't just have beer and cupcakes in the fridge anymore yeah 46:36 exactly or a a rolled up mattress with a knife in it as a punching 46:43 bag but his couch isn't a bad couch though no it's they've kept the couch the couch has made it through the 46:49 transition uh you see a painting behind the bed of like these dogs yeah uh and 46:55 then also like if you look on the Walls by the door you'll see like plates mounted on the walls and stuff on the 47:01 shelves you'll see some kind of like I want to say wallpaper but it's not that but you put it on like inside of drawers 47:07 and shelves a lot to make it nicer like Adrian's kind of given this this dingy crappy apartment a bit of the woman's 47:14 touch I wonder if it still stinks yeah likely I don't know if you can get the stink out of that apartment but that's 47:21 uh that's that's great Insight Kyle and that's awesome speaking to those who 47:27 made the movie kudos to the prop designers add that personality and real 47:32 worldly to to the scene very quick scene but it does it does change the 47:38 environment of the apartment totally yeah and I think even if you don't consciously notice it I think on some level you do realize that when you look 47:45 at the apartment sure I agree totally so he's walked through that apartment because he's gone off the couch he's 47:51 gotten up he's snuck out of the apartment to go to the ring the night before the fight so the the Auditorium 47:57 the Philadelphia Spectrum I believe it's called is is is empty and the first scene we see is a Polo's face on the big 48:06 huge banner I wonder how much that cost yeah in real life to make that big banner yeah yeah like that'd be a big 48:11 part of their budget that yeah that's a really good point actually I don't you have to think of it in terms of like uh 48:18 what things cost in the 70s but nowadays that would cost like thousands like easily 10,000 or more like so he's 48:25 looking at the paollo at the ring getting a feeling of the ring and this this scene is actually called cuz the 48:30 music for the scene is called the loone in the ring uh this is one of my favorite scenes of the whole movie to be 48:36 honest like there's just something about it something be being in the Spectrum where it's totally deserted yeah it's 48:42 something I would do personally if I was in that situation like I'd want to go there the night before and kind of sus 48:48 everything out and I think like Rocky at this point really realizes how big time 48:54 this fight is like I think some level he knew that cuz obviously you're fighting 48:59 the champ but then when you actually step in that ring yourself then you kind of realize oh wow like this is you know 49:06 the last fight he had was in that church that got turned into a boxing like a makeshift boxing 49:13 arena yeah they had a picture of Jesus and now there's a picture of him and Creed yeah yeah exactly and that picture 49:19 of him by the way is a horrible picture yeah the I made a note of that actually yeah that like Apollo's picture looks 49:26 just like Apollo it really does yeah then then Rocky's picture looks like he's some kind of troll or something it 49:33 it kind of looks like you know that that that woman or nun I think it was that tried to um touch up painting of Christ 49:41 well somebody listening is going to know that some nun got a Priceless painting and retouched it just looks the same 49:48 okay well that's worth Googling it's a visual it's a visual exercises regardless yeah great for a [Laughter] 49:54 podcast take a 19 Century piece of artwork in need of a little care let an 49:59 eager grandmother with a paintbrush have a go at restoring it and this is the 50:04 result we saw that everything was falling down and we fixed it Cecilia Jimenez thought she was helping out but 50:11 now she's distro at what she's done and as the residents of boha in northeastern Spain take it all in she's claiming she 50:18 didn't act alone did somebody order you to do this of course the priest knew it 50:24 the priest knew it he did could we do something like that without his permission you did it secretly didn't 50:30 you no of course not everybody who came into the church could see me as I was painting the Fresco of Christ isn't 50:38 particularly valuable at least not in financial terms but it is or was loved by 50:45 locals until now she just painted on the tunic but the problem started when she painted the head as well because she's 50:51 destroyed this painting professionals will attempt to fix the bot job but without a miracle they will struggle to 50:57 restore it completely poor Jesus I mean he looks like he's the uh the result of 51:02 a very long weekend with the boys on his Stag Night um I've never seen anything look so transformed this is such a 51:09 wonderful rendition of a of of a person you wouldn't necessarily recognize in a police lineup but um uh it's certainly a 51:17 famous picture now the unfortunate attempt has made this grandmother something of a reluctant viral celebrity 51:23 online already mockups of other restorations in her are being published like this one of the Last Supper but for 51:30 Cecilia himene it'll just be a matter of praying that the original image of Christ can indeed be redeemed Phil LEL 51:37 Al jazer and uh now K you'll probably get into this part but what makes this scene 51:44 so poignant not just him walking through you see Stallone well the actor Stallone but you see Rocky's eyes just kind of 51:51 looking around almost dumbfounded almost off struck sorry Ruben just brought Ruben just brought up the picture 51:57 okay a woman oh my goodness a woman updated a a fresco painting I think it's 52:03 like from the 6th Century oh my goodness this is terrible so she was given a old old 52:10 picture of Christ that was from the 16th century asked to retouch 52:18 it okay so for for our listeners at home we will post this story and the uh 52:24 picture because you want to know what I'm talking about yeah so Rocky's picture kind of looks like this yeah and 52:29 this is a terrible story okay so what makes this uh scene so poignant of 52:34 course is Jurgens happens to be there too which is which is rather odd if you ask me and I think it's one of those 52:41 it's a story it's as we know it's a storytelling moment jurgus just happens to be walking through and he's wearing 52:47 his red gloves he's got a cigar in his hand yes of course those I wanted to mention that those red 52:52 gloves I love how he hey Rocky what are you doing here brother he's like and the first and the only thing that he 52:58 brings up is the fact that the painting is off the colors are off that his he's got white white the red 53:05 strap and but this is really important to Rocky and he's almost childlike with 53:11 his concern you see this a lot in the film this isn't the only time like what 53:16 for example okay so like for instance when he uh when he's about to leave the dressing room for the fight he's like 53:23 hey you don't think this robee's too baggy is it right uh so of course he talks about the 53:28 shorts and what makes this scene so heartbreaking is when the Mr Jurgen says it doesn't really matter does 53:38 it Rocky what brings you here tonight Mr Jurgens the post is wrong 53:46 what do you mean well I'm wearing white pants with a red 53:53 stripe it doesn't really matter does it I'm sure you're going to give us a great 53:59 show try to get some rest kid good 54:05 night she's right but yeah he's right in a in a cold calculating way from his 54:11 perspective he's already made the money like his money is in his pocket already win or lose Jurgens walks away with 54:17 whatever cut he gets from making this fight happen right but Rocky world it's all that matters my part with with this 54:25 I know for the sake of the movie it really happened but I almost wonder how much of it would have been in his 54:31 imagination meaning that if Jurgens didn't even show up okay Ryan you mentioned this is an odd scene why would 54:37 Jurgens be there or was that you Kyle oh yeah that was me yeah because I think when Stallone was writing this he wanted 54:44 to express what he was feeling so if he's all alone he's not able to express that so right incomes jur you need 54:52 Jurgens there for that to happen I know Jurgens was really there for the movie 54:57 but it's also imaginary in the sense of yeah you did need Jurgens there so that he could express 55:03 that and it's funny what Jurgen said too he's he doesn't say like oh you're G to give us a great fight he says you're 55:09 gonna give us a great show yes and like in jurgen's mind and pretty much everyone but Rocky in his closest Circle 55:16 this is just a show like they couldn't get the rank Contender and so they 55:22 they're playing this novelty as Apollo called it and it's just a show like PA plan to carry this guy for a few rounds 55:28 and then knock him out Creed and three Creed and three Creed and three oh I want mention one thing yeah 55:36 and it is a little bit to the next movie but what I thought was kind of funny is that on the picture the shorts Rocky's 55:43 wearing the red shorts with the white stripe those are the shorts Apollo's wearing in the next movie whoa he wears 55:50 that color scheme yeah he wears red shorts with a white stripe that's a great find I wonder many other Rocky 55:57 fans picked that up because I've never noticed that before now that you're saying I see it totally in my head and 56:03 you're right we're looking at the picture now good catch there Kyle that's I'm here that's well hey again I say 56:10 again we are not subject matter experts we have no business we we have no business doing this podcast but yet here 56:16 we are they pay us the money we do it that's right our sponsors are coming in hard and Furious so we got to keep the 56:21 podcast going speaking of sponsors let's give a shout out to Shamrock Meats 56:27 Shamrock Meats Shamrock meats you can come in and pound your own 56:34 meat we'll we'll we'll wrap up your pound meat and your wife will take care of it when you get home oh before we get to the final fight 56:42 Rocky has a little discussion with Adrien lying lying in bed next to Adrian now this scene of course you talked 56:47 about your favorite like this whole movie is full of this what I meant by the my favorite this is without this 56:53 scene this movie is meaningless in my opinion okay okay KY now I get you now I really like that alone in the ri alone 56:59 in the ring scene because it bleeds into this discussion with Adrian yes okay yeah yeah so Rocky kind of he comes to 57:05 this realization and he he sits down with Adrien and he kind of wakes her up 57:10 because she's sleeping he's like I can't do it she's kind of confused and then she says Apollo he's like yeah I can't 57:16 beat him I'm not even in this guy's league and then I like what she says like what are we got to do I love that I 57:22 totally agree that total support of wife now like snap out of it what do you mean 57:27 that the you know everyone's expecting you to show up tomorrow and what I also like is that she's not uh you like you 57:33 can do it rock or something like that but it's a total it's a total we we we 57:39 yeah like we're in this together she's awesome I love Adrian yeah Adrian's the 57:44 best andalia sh she yeah sh she does such a good job playing her oh yeah and 57:52 and what you guys were talking about in the previous episodes about the bum mhm 57:57 really comes off here yes yes it does your boy you're cuz he say you know I don't matter it doesn't matter if I lose 58:03 this fight or if this guy opens my head cuz I was nobody before yeah it don't matter cuz I was nobody 58:12 before don't say that come on Adrian this true I it's 58:20 nobody that don't matter either you know cuz I always thinking 58:28 it really don't matter if I lose this fight really don't matter if this guy 58:34 opens my head again that's all I want to do is go to 58:44 distance nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed and if I can go that 58:51 distance you see and that bell rings and I'm still standing 59:01 I want to know for the first time in my life see that wer just another B from the 59:09 neighborhood which Adrian fights him on he mentions like no one's ever gone the distance with Creed before and if I can 59:15 go that distance then I'll know for the first time in my life that I'm not just another bum from the neighborhood that 59:21 is the whole premise of his character that is the whole reason why we as 59:27 viewers have gone on this journey with him cuz we started off as we talked about in our first episode he's just a 59:33 bum he's just going through the motions he's just part of the city part of the uh part of the decoration of the city 59:39 and he knows he wants to be more he knows it's inside of him but he's never been able to Showcase it or or just make 59:46 it happen and here it is in his lap and it's the night before the fight he's like this is my one time that I can show 59:51 the world and myself that I'm not just another bum this is yeah like he said that his like he he wanted to to show 59:58 that he could be a good Pro if he can do something that no other pro boxer could do then I think he can kind of rewind 1:00:06 his life and said okay you know what if I would have done this I would have been a good Pro like I would have been a serious Contender not not some I think 1:00:14 he's under no illusions that like after this fight's over nothing's gonna happen no there ain't GNA be no 1:00:20 rematch yeah ain't got to be no rematch and but he knows if he can go the full 1:00:25 15 round rounds then he he's something special [Applause]
