- 0:01Welcome to another episode of Mommy Would.
- 0:04I'm so happy that you're here. This is another solo episode and
- 0:08this one might be a little emotional and a little all over
- 0:12the place, so bear with me. Come join me for the ride.
- 0:16This episode is all about do I have another kid or not?
- 0:21If you've been following me at all, you know that that is
- 0:24definitely a topic I've been struggling with.
- 0:28It's been on my mind a lot. And this episode, I'm just gonna
- 0:32kind of go through where my head is and hopefully somebody else
- 0:37can relate. If you're going through the same
- 0:39thing with even having one, like maybe you don't know if you want
- 0:44one, Maybe you don't know. I don't know, right.
- 0:48So, so let's just get it started.
- 0:53I think one of the things, OK, so like I feel let's talk about
- 0:59the difference between like 1 feels full.
- 1:03But is it final? You know, I feel it's a push and
- 1:07pull between contentment and curiosity.
- 1:10Like I'm very content with our family.
- 1:13I feel like we've been so lucky with May, but I am curious how
- 1:19life would be with another one. But is curiosity enough?
- 1:27Also, what makes your family complete?
- 1:30What makes you feel like your family is complete?
- 1:33And I know that this is different for everyone.
- 1:37So it's kind of just figuring that out for yourself, which I
- 1:42know everyone has to do, but I'm bringing you along on this
- 1:46journey while I try to figure it out now.
- 1:49Also, another thing is the whole, you know, career versus
- 1:56clock thing. I think the reason it's been
- 1:59weighing on me so much is because I just turned 38.
- 2:05I know that's not old. I know it's not old.
- 2:08I know people have babies well into their 40s.
- 2:11But for some reason, I don't really know why, but I don't
- 2:15want to have one when I'm 40. And I don't really have to
- 2:20explain why I don't because I don't feel like I really have a
- 2:23valid reason. I just don't.
- 2:25So I feel like it's kind of at the point where it's like shit
- 2:29or get off the pot because you know, I don't know how long
- 2:35it'll take and if it'll happen. So it's kind of like now or
- 2:40never when it comes to clock my my clock.
- 2:47I think in terms of like career, though, that doesn't seem to
- 2:53worry as me worry me as much. I think that is a bigger worry
- 3:00when you're younger and like it seems farther off and you're
- 3:05worried about like where you're going to be in your career at
- 3:08the point that you can have kids.
- 3:10I feel like since I've already had one and I know that I don't
- 3:13have to stop my career or acting or or pursuing this, is that I
- 3:20feel like the whole career side of it doesn't scare me and
- 3:28that's not really a hindrance. So that's nice.
- 3:33However, the reality of living in Lai live in LA and it is not
- 3:39cheap. It's wildly expensive, and don't
- 3:46get me wrong, I think that pretty much everywhere is
- 3:50expensive right now, but LA and New York are probably the like
- 3:56highest ones right now. And being in one of the most
- 3:59expensive cities that there is the idea of bringing another
- 4:06child into our two-bedroom apartment.
- 4:10Let's just stick to financially first.
- 4:13Financially bringing another kid into the mix is going to change
- 4:23things exponentially. I've heard a lot that if you
- 4:28have two, it's not exactly doubling it.
- 4:30You multiply it by several. You think like, oh, I'll just
- 4:36double whatever, but it somehow becomes exponentially more
- 4:40expensive to have more than one child.
- 4:44And I don't know if we are financially in a place to have
- 4:51another kid. It's so expensive.
- 4:58But again, living in LA and being in a two-bedroom 2 bath,
- 5:02which is great. We have laundry in the unit
- 5:04which is great, but I would like a third room for myself, like
- 5:10for an office for a podcast room.
- 5:13Not another room for another baby necessarily.
- 5:18Now, I know growing up, I shared a room with my sister until,
- 5:23like I, you know, for a long time I shared.
- 5:28Yeah, I shared a room with my sister until the other one went
- 5:30to college. So.
- 5:32And I loved it. Well, I don't know if I loved
- 5:34it, but like, it's an experience.
- 5:36I think siblings are fine sharing a room.
- 5:38I don't think it's like each of my kids has to have their own
- 5:42room. I don't feel that way.
- 5:44Although my room growing up was probably a lot, was a lot bigger
- 5:48than May's room. You can see her room now if
- 5:51you're watching this. I do want my kids to have a
- 5:55house. Like if I have more than one, I
- 5:58feel like Mae is fine. She has her own space, but I
- 6:03feel like it would be very crowded with two children and me
- 6:09and my husband because people need space of their own too.
- 6:13Like my husband needs space. I need space.
- 6:18We need space to be able to sit on your own too.
- 6:21And I know that that's a luxury and that's a privilege, but
- 6:25that's kind of where where I am and just the idea of childcare
- 6:33now. Now, this is actually something
- 6:35that makes me feel a little bit better because if I had another
- 6:40one, by the time I had another one, say May would be in school,
- 6:46we're sending her to public school and it that would be a
- 6:53financial. So right now, then we wouldn't
- 6:56be paying for her schooling that we're paying for right now.
- 7:00But then eventually we would be paying for the other one, you
- 7:03know, So it's like kind of a balance.
- 7:06But then you get into health insurance, food.
- 7:12They eat more the older they are, like toys.
- 7:17Like, I want to be able to give her things and experiences that
- 7:20I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to give two people two games like
- 7:26flying, like flying home, which were May and I are flying back
- 7:30to Saint Louis soon. And it was one thing to buy the
- 7:34two of us tickets, but to buy four people tickets, that's like
- 7:40we're not going anywhere. Like that seems crazy to me.
- 7:46So the financially I'm like, no. Now when it comes to like
- 7:54obviously I understand Preston has a say in this as well.
- 7:58So us talking about it, he's leaning more towards yes.
- 8:06I feel like I'm leaning more towards no, but I don't know.
- 8:10We've definitely had lots of conversations about it.
- 8:15He would tell you I talk about it literally all the time.
- 8:19But we haven't come to like a final resolution because neither
- 8:25of us is like very yes and neither of us is very no.
- 8:30So we're both kind of wishy washy, which is no good, no good
- 8:36at all. So So yes, I've definitely had
- 8:40the conversation with my husband.
- 8:41I feel like at the end of the day, it's more on me because
- 8:47obviously I'm the one who's going to be caring and having
- 8:51the baby and for the first long bit, it's a lot more on the mom
- 8:57than the dad. But because I was nursing and
- 8:59who knows what this with what another baby will be like.
- 9:03That's another thing I feel like I might be jinxing it to have
- 9:06another baby because knock on wood and praise God, whoever
- 9:13that may has been so quote UN quote easy.
- 9:20The birth was pretty traumatic, but like her health, her
- 9:25well-being, her sleeping, her eating, her everything.
- 9:30I feel like we've been so lucky because so many things that most
- 9:34parents like complain about or dread or whatever, like has been
- 9:40so easy and I know that like you tend to get the opposite of what
- 9:44you had the first time. So that does scare me very much.
- 9:49That being said though, the birth process, that is one of
- 9:52the reasons I want to have another one because I was not
- 9:57really a part of May's birth process.
- 10:00They put me under and pulled her out and I we will get into that
- 10:05again, but I wasn't there for her birth.
- 10:07Like I would like to be able to have a vaginal birth, but then
- 10:13again, who knows what could go wrong the next time.
- 10:17I it's all hard to not be able to plan and not be able to like,
- 10:23no. And isn't that funny that that's
- 10:26like the career we've chosen to that like I don't know what my
- 10:31future holds now. Only child guilt.
- 10:37I do have a bit of guilt not giving her a sibling because I
- 10:43had siblings. I have two older sisters who are
- 10:47gonna cry who are my best friends.
- 10:51And I feel like that would be something I would be taking from
- 10:57her. And I know that that's not
- 11:00necessarily true, but it is how I feel.
- 11:03And I know plenty of people who are only children who have like,
- 11:08friends that are like family. But I've never had like, friends
- 11:12that are family. But maybe that's because I've
- 11:17had my sisters. So I do.
- 11:21And she may love his baby so much, but I can't have another
- 11:25kid just for my current kid. You know?
- 11:29I understand that as well. So yeah, there's also the, gosh,
- 11:39I don't even think it's societal.
- 11:42OK, now I'm just getting emotional about everything.
- 11:44I don't think it's societal pressure.
- 11:46I think it's just a pressure I put on myself because in no
- 11:53reality, but I ever say this to another human and I hesitate
- 11:59even saying that. It's out loud, that it's a
- 12:01thought in my head. But I do feel like that maybe if
- 12:12I only have one, that I'm not enough of a mom.
- 12:19How massive is that? And again, I would never say
- 12:24that to anyone who has one child.
- 12:27You have one child, you're fully a mom, 100% a mom.
- 12:31I just feel sometimes that it sneaks in there that I'm like, I
- 12:37only have one. Am I enough of a mom?
- 12:41Like where does that come from? I don't know.
- 12:45I don't know. I really don't know where that
- 12:47comes from. Also, I do worry that I'm not
- 12:50going to have enough patience for another 1.
- 12:54I feel like I feel like I'm a pretty good mom to me, but I do
- 12:59fear that I wouldn't be a great mom to two kids.
- 13:05And I've started following this, this woman or there's a couple
- 13:09accounts on Instagram that I've started following like the joy
- 13:13of 1. And she posted something
- 13:16recently that was like, your kid doesn't need another sibling.
- 13:19Your kid needs a mentally stable parent.
- 13:24And I found that very relatable because again, I feel like I'm
- 13:32doing all right with me. My patience does wear thin, but
- 13:38I feel like it would be paper thin like rice paper thin with
- 13:45with two. And I do worry that like I
- 13:49wouldn't be the best mom to two kids.
- 13:52Oh, I hate saying that out loud. I also, I get there's the whole
- 13:59comparison and it's like this woman also posted like if you
- 14:04just want one, it's still OK to be jealous or yeah, jealous.
- 14:09I guess when you see somebody else announce that they're
- 14:11having another baby, like that doesn't necessarily mean that
- 14:14you want 10. Another thing that I saw was
- 14:18that I might not have been the same woman, but somebody posted
- 14:21like, I don't want another child.
- 14:23I just like want that time with my child back.
- 14:27Like I it just goes so fast. I don't necessarily necessarily
- 14:31want another one, but I want like to experience it with my
- 14:36child again. And the fact that I didn't know
- 14:42if I wanted more or not the first time is also hard because
- 14:49I feel like maybe I wish I would have gone into the first one
- 14:53knowing that it's one and done. Not that I didn't cherish it the
- 14:58first time, but I feel like I kind of just like wish I would
- 15:04have known that. Yeah.
- 15:10Yeah. Man, these are some intimate
- 15:12things I'm sharing. I hope somebody can relate to
- 15:15some of these thoughts. Another thing is kind of just
- 15:20like an age gap with with May and another one.
- 15:27I feel like 4 years is great. Well, she's 3 so she would be 4.
- 15:32I feel like that's fine. I feel like she could kind of
- 15:34help. I, I feel like it is hard
- 15:38thinking like oh man though, if we had like a 10 and a 14 year
- 15:43old, like those are two totally different.
- 15:46Like 1 can watch PG13 movies. Like it's so much more
- 15:51complicated with two where you have to think of two fully
- 15:56different lives and humans and have to navigate between two.
- 16:04Like that sounds so hard. But then you see them like if
- 16:11they play together and become friends and like have each other
- 16:17in the future. I feel like I don't want a baby,
- 16:21another baby now. I feel like I want another child
- 16:25for the future, especially because right now Mae's potty
- 16:30trained, she's in school. The idea of starting over seems
- 16:36so daunting. Like starting all the way over.
- 16:39Like, Oh my God, I would have to be pregnant.
- 16:41Like I had a pretty good pregnancy, but like, so
- 16:43uncomfortable. Then who knows what's going to
- 16:46happen with the birth and then you got to have a newborn.
- 16:49Like I feel like I've mostly forgotten what that stage was
- 16:53like. But if if another baby is not as
- 16:59good as May with like sleeping and eating and all that, like
- 17:03what am I going to do? Like I'll lose my mind.
- 17:06I feel like there's just so many what ifs.
- 17:09Again, I told you that this was going to be a lot of back and
- 17:12forth, so hopefully you're still with me.
- 17:16Again, I doubt. I doubt I don't even know where
- 17:21I'm at at this point. This is just my head constantly.
- 17:25This is what's going on in my head constantly.
- 17:28I will say I feel like some of the signs that I feel like more
- 17:37so I'm done at 1 is that the idea of like clearing out space,
- 17:44like getting rid of the pack and play and getting rid of the
- 17:48bassinet and getting rid of all of this stuff that I have kept
- 17:52in case the idea of making space for not another kid sounds OK to
- 18:04me, sounds kind of nice. And I feel like that might be a
- 18:10sign. Another thing is that I think
- 18:13most people that I have talked to about this who have more than
- 18:19one say that they just knew they wanted two or however many they
- 18:24have. Like I just knew I wanted to, or
- 18:26I just knew. I, I just know I want 4 or
- 18:29whatever. I don't, I don't know, I guess I
- 18:34knew I wanted one and I didn't think beyond that.
- 18:39Damn it, Emily, why did you not think beyond that?
- 18:43But maybe that's another sign that I'm OK with one.
- 18:52But then the idea that I, the idea that I might regret not
- 18:58having another one, it's really hard.
- 19:05And I know that people will say like you'll never regret having
- 19:10another one. All the other things that I've
- 19:15mentioned about like money and space and like how it would kind
- 19:20of be a relief to be done with and just have one.
- 19:28But then I think, what if I had another one?
- 19:33And then here I am. So it's kind of like my head and
- 19:38my heart are just at odds. This parenting thing is not for
- 19:52the week anyway. I have not answered one and done
- 20:02question clearly but I would like to hear from other people
- 20:09how you knew you were done at one or how you knew you wanted
- 20:13more because I think it's just like the how or the not knowing
- 20:18I think. I think also I need to kind of
- 20:22let it go. I think I need to let whatever
- 20:29happens happen and that I don't have to decide right this
- 20:34moment. I'm I'm the only one who's
- 20:37making that 40 year old time clock happen to myself.
- 20:43And I can change it if I want to.
- 20:47But yeah, the whole like going through it over and over, it's
- 20:52kind of driving me crazy. So I think at the moment I need
- 20:55to let it go. I'm saying that knowing that I'm
- 20:58still going to be thinking about it constantly because I do want
- 21:00to know, mostly because I will, not mostly, but I do want to
- 21:03know if I should like, get rid of this stuff and make space.
- 21:08But it's the regret really that gets me too.
- 21:19And I know we shouldn't live in a place of fear, but I fear both
- 21:25situations. So what do I do with that?
- 21:30I fear I'm I fear regretting having another one.
- 21:36I feel I fear regretting it in the like financial and
- 21:46logistical and mental health and space wise and all of the all of
- 21:53those ways or those ways. I fear regretting doing it.
- 22:00Then on the other hand, I fear regretting not doing it.
- 22:08And that list is a lot shorter because I just don't want to be,
- 22:15you know, old and wish I would have had more than one.
- 22:25Somebody told me that it's very similar to that episode of
- 22:28Friends. Or it's like this long list of
- 22:35why not to have a baby or, you know, the long list of reasons.
- 22:40And then on the other side, it's it's not Rachel.
- 22:48So yeah, there's so many reasons to not have a baby, but then
- 22:54they're kind of one reason to have a baby.
- 22:58It's a pretty hefty 1. Anyway, I'm going to stop crying
- 23:08to you now. I'm going to leave you there.
- 23:11I'm going to leave myself there. I'm going to shake this off, let
- 23:13it go, try to let it go. And hopefully you gain something
- 23:19from listening to my conversation back and forth with
- 23:24myself. And yeah, again, thanks for
- 23:28being here and thanks for being a part of Mommy Would.
