- 0:16let's talk about not loving homeschool.

- 0:40As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 0:43or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:46I know that it is crazy
- 0:50that I come here and I built this entire channel and community.
- 0:54I like to think is around something bigger than homeschooling.
- 0:56But let's not kid. It's probably not.
- 1:00I don't love it.
- 1:00I don't love it every day.
- 1:01And if you think about it, bare bones, I mean, there's probably going to
- 1:05be able out there who clutch their pearls about it.
- 1:07Like, how dare you?
- 1:08How dare you chose this life?
- 1:10Everyone and you don't even like it, which isn't the case.
- 1:13It's the same thing is like being married or being a parent.
- 1:16Some days is hard.
- 1:18It is hard.
- 1:19It is hard to deal with
- 1:23the pressure, the pressure of
- 1:27other people's opinions, which you know, as much as I can say
- 1:31FM, it just is still heavy and hard and grating,
- 1:36and it's hard to deal with the pressures of getting it right.
- 1:41The pressures we put on ourselves, the things that.
- 1:46I mean, they do matter, but
- 1:48the things that in the day to day really don't even matter as much.
- 1:52The lack of sleep, the stress, the stress, the cost.
- 1:55And yes, I don't ever want cost to be a barrier to homeschool.
- 1:58But there's still costs.
- 2:00So time costs, emotional costs, the dollar costs, space.
- 2:05There's just so much.
- 2:08There's so much.
- 2:09And it's okay to not love it every day.
- 2:14I don't love it every day.
- 2:16There are times when you know, I never seriously.
- 2:20But you know, you think about what would life be like if my kids did go to school.
- 2:23What would it be like if they went back and
- 2:27went back, went, I guess, in my situation,
- 2:29and I think that's really fair.
- 2:33There are a lot of expectations
- 2:35that come just from being a parent, being a human these days, being a mother
- 2:40to add on.
- 2:42Also homeschooling, there's a lot that's hard and there's a lot
- 2:45that's heavy.
- 2:46And it's again, it's okay to not love it every day.
- 2:49It's okay to not love it every season.
- 2:51It's okay to choose some years and to not choose some years.
- 2:54It is okay.
- 2:55All of that is understandable and reasonable, but there are certain
- 3:00things that you can do when you're just not loving it every day.
- 3:04Some of the things that I will do is I will change it up.
- 3:08If I'm having a particularly hard day, I might just say, forget it.
- 3:13Today we don't.
- 3:14Today we clean the house because that's all I can think about.
- 3:17So I've got to get this done before my brain can move on.
- 3:19Today we go do something fun because sometimes
- 3:23you just need to get out of the house and go to the zoo.
- 3:27Eat a dollop.
- 3:28Sometimes you need to go for a walk.
- 3:30Sometimes you need to feel the sunshine.
- 3:31Sometimes it is the first nice day in a long time and you hit the beach.
- 3:35Some days it's not even about homeschooling,
- 3:39it's just that you would rather be doing anything else.
- 3:42Some days it's that there's a fun performance.
- 3:45Some days there's a friend's birthday party,
- 3:47some days it's just better to be doing anything else.
- 3:51A couch day, a pajama day, which is another thing we do.
- 3:54Sometimes we keep doing school, though.
- 3:55We do it in pajamas.
- 3:57Some days we give ourselves an early cutoff time and just watch movies.
- 4:02Sometimes we lean into
- 4:04the things that do bring us joy, because sometimes homeschool is not that.
- 4:08And I love this way of life and I do appreciate it all the time.
- 4:12But some days it sucks in the same way that you love your marriage.
- 4:16But some days it sucks and some days your kids suck, and some days
- 4:19you don't want to be a parent and some days you just want to go,
- 4:22you know, travel the world so low and alone.
- 4:24And I know that you guys get me.
- 4:26Some days are hard and some days just could pass a little faster.
- 4:31But I want to remind you that it is okay to not love homeschooling every day.
- 4:35And by the time you see this video, it will be mid September,
- 4:40which means that some of you
- 4:42have been doing this
- 4:42for a couple of weeks, and some of you have been doing it
- 4:44for about six weeks, and some of you will understand.
- 4:46And we're going to have this conversation
- 4:47again in the spring, because all the dark days, the dark days,
- 4:50there is something about the start after Christmas to like spring break time.
- 4:54I don't know if it's like winter or what, because even here, where the weather
- 4:57is still pretty nice, like, oh man, it feels like it will never end.
- 5:02It just it just is day to day to day to day to day.
- 5:05And it feels like it will never stop.
- 5:07So we'll have this encouraging discussion again later.
- 5:10Don't worry.
- 5:12I just want you to remember that
- 5:17the days are long and the years are short,
- 5:19and that applies to homeschooling as well.
- 5:22So there will be some days when you are struggling to get through anything, and
- 5:25it is okay if you just do math and call it a day, and it is okay
- 5:28if you get to your limit and you're done and you didn't get a single thing done,
- 5:33it is okay if you hit your limit before you even see the shining faces
- 5:37of your little cherubs that your birth to.
- 5:39It is okay.
- 5:41We all have it.
- 5:42We all have those days.
- 5:43But what we have is the freedom to say today's pajamas.
- 5:47Today there's no math. Today is the movie day.
- 5:50Today is a park day.
- 5:51We have that freedom.
- 5:53Whereas if it were sending everybody
- 5:56out into the world to a job and to school
- 6:00and to a poor teacher, or if we were the teacher,
- 6:03we wouldn't have the freedom to acknowledge that sometimes.
- 6:06And what it really is, is a mental health day.
- 6:08And you guys know,
- 6:10I mean, there are seasons of life where you're moving an illness.
- 6:14There are times
- 6:14when you just have to set it down, but you got to be ready to pick it back up.
- 6:19And the days are long, but the years are short.
- 6:21So you're going to
- 6:22forget about the one day when you didn't do everything like you planned
- 6:25and you'll feel guilty.
- 6:26Don't worry, it's going to happen. It's going to suck.
- 6:28Give yourself a little if it gives you any, here's your permission slip.
- 6:32Shauna said it was okay.
- 6:33Shauna said it was okay to. Not today. Okay?
- 6:35Not every day. Don't hear me, hear me.
- 6:38Not every day, but something that I have found.
- 6:41The gift of consistency is that I build in extra weeks and extra days.
- 6:46So if you guys are new here, you may not know that when I plan my homeschool year,
- 6:52I plan academically for about 3032 weeks
- 6:55and I time out 3436 weeks. Why?
- 6:58Because we will not.
- 7:02We will not.
- 7:03And I like to account for that.
- 7:05That gives me a certain amount of peace
- 7:07when it comes to the day where we will not.
- 7:09But I know it's okay.
- 7:10Same thing with why we do four day school weeks.
- 7:13We do for day school weeks because there is always something else to do.
- 7:16Our first week of school, we started back to a lot of our events.
- 7:20We started back to Girl Scouts.
- 7:21I had a dentist appointment and we had a friend's birthday party at the beach.
- 7:25Yeah, so four day school weeks allow me to give myself
- 7:30that grace when there's a day when we're just that day.
- 7:33I don't love homeschooling that day. I just don't want to that day.
- 7:36I just don't want to with people or my kids or my house or whatever it is.
- 7:41It's built in and it's accounted for it.
- 7:43And that honestly saves me so much guilt,
- 7:47stress, pressure, just knowing that it is okay to not.
- 7:52You know how I know that?
- 7:52Because previous Shawna made a point that there were days
- 7:55to not in the calendar and you can't have too many.
- 7:58Again, I'm not saying don't do anything, I'm not saying that.
- 8:00But what I am saying is
- 8:01there will be times
- 8:02and there will be seasons when you don't like it and the early times,
- 8:05and there'll be seasons when you have to put it down.
- 8:06And there will be times and there will be seasons
- 8:08when you're doing it anyway, even if you don't have a deep love for it.
- 8:11And that's okay.
- 8:13I don't want you to wallow in that.
- 8:14So you need to check on that, okay? Keep your temperature gauge.
- 8:17If that becomes more often the case than not, maybe not for you.
- 8:21I know you're going to hate me for saying it, but it's okay to quit.
- 8:23Guys. It's okay to change your mind.
- 8:25Just like I say in my house.
- 8:26My homeschool is a collaborative experience and so is yours.
- 8:28Everyone has to be getting what they need out of this.
- 8:30So if you hate every day, if you hate every single thing about it
- 8:33every single day, please do not, please do not, please send them on their way.
- 8:37Please send them to school.
- 8:38Okay.
- 8:38Let go back to being the fun mom and not the homeschool mom.
- 8:41And that's okay.
- 8:42That's okay.
- 8:43It is okay to not love this way of life.
- 8:45It is okay to quit. It is okay to pivot.
- 8:47It is okay to outsource math if math makes you fight every single day.
- 8:51But that is the only drop. Outsource.
- 8:52Now get you a math tutor or hire someone else.
- 8:55Calling grandpa. Get the cousin over.
- 8:59You don't have to
- 9:00suffer the win when it comes to homeschool,
- 9:01but there's going to be days of suck, so you'll know the balance
- 9:05and don't keep going just because you think you should.
- 9:09Don't keep going just because you said you would.
- 9:11Make sure that you are doing all of these things for the right reasons
- 9:15and that everyone's on board.
- 9:17Okay, because maybe, maybe your kids
- 9:20are the ones who hate, homeschool and hate every day of it.
- 9:23And maybe you just have to adjust to that being the reality and adjust accordingly.
- 9:28So I just want to remind you that we're not all going to love this every day.
- 9:32And that's okay.
- 9:33You're not going to love everything every day.
- 9:35Just like the things you do love deeply, truly, every day.
- 9:39Homeschool is not fragile like that. And it's okay.
- 9:42You can pick it down,
- 9:43put it down, you can pick it up, and you can also change your mind.
- 9:46So just a little friendly reminder.
- 9:48Don't come at me, don't hate on me.
- 9:51Just a reminder that nothing's permanent.
- 9:54Everything's temporary. And some things just have seasons.
- 9:56Maybe it worked great for a while and now it doesn't. And that's okay too.
- 9:59Maybe you're just coming to this and you're having a really hard few weeks.
- 10:02There's always an adjustment period.
- 10:04I know it's the worst. It's not worst.
- 10:06Just like parenting, okay?
- 10:07You just have to get through the
- 10:08sleepless nights and then it does get a little easier.
- 10:11But maybe it's also just not for you.
- 10:13That's okay too, I promise.
- 10:15I hope that you found it is helpful, entertaining, informative.
- 10:17If you did, please scroll down.
- 10:18Hit that big red subscribe button,
- 10:20turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 10:22As always, if I'm you right on down in the comments
- 10:25or on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic, I would love to hear.
- 10:28Whoa, what is something that just set you off for a day?
- 10:34Maybe you dropped your freshly baked local bread on the floor,
- 10:38or maybe you forgot to turn on the coffee pot.
- 10:42What was something where you were just like,
- 10:46not today.
- 10:47Because we all have those days.
- 10:48There's just,
- 10:49you know, you know, you know, I know, you know, you get me, you feel me.
- 10:53But just just a reminder.
- 10:55Not even on the bad days, we can keep making everyday magic.
- 11:00And honestly, if you if you change, if you pivot, go to the beach instead.
- 11:05It's a pretty great day.
- 11:07And that's a winning day by.
