Vermont’s beloved American beech trees are under siege from microscopic worms carrying a deadly leaf disease that’s already spread to six of the state’s fourteen counties. Originating in Japan and first spotted in Ohio in 2012, the nematodes surged across the East Coast—especially in New England during the pandemic—with theories on how they travel ranging from birds to wind and water.
