- 0:00Speaker 1: From the Duncan Music louds here in Hartford I or
- 0:02Speaker 1: Heart Radio, home of our flag ship, Fox Sports Radio
- 0:06Speaker 1: ninety seven nine. Zach Glynnfield back in the studio in
- 0:09Speaker 1: Carolina with us. We appreciate him and Jamoor, of course
- 0:12Speaker 1: we appreciate him. Third year coaching the Huskies, we were
- 0:15Speaker 1: talking little D and down lineman. We know a lot
- 0:19Speaker 1: of familiar names there, but you get two week familiar
- 0:22Speaker 1: brown back.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I mean, that guy can play football.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And you've got a lot of new people in the secondary.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Do you have a sense of who might be the corners,
- 0:30Speaker 1: who might be your safeties or is it just going
- 0:33Speaker 1: to be eight guys rotating every game?
- 0:35Speaker 3: You know what you're going to see guys rotating. And
- 0:38Speaker 3: I think that's because we've got pretty good depth and
- 0:41Speaker 3: the amount of plays that you play now in college football,
- 0:43Speaker 3: with the hurry up offenses and the o'huddle, you've got
- 0:46Speaker 3: to have depth. You've got to be able to rotate
- 0:48Speaker 3: guys through there. And so you know, unfortunately for us,
- 0:51Speaker 3: we lost a couple guys early in camp for the season.
- 0:54Speaker 3: We lost the safety and we lost a corner that
- 0:56Speaker 3: we were kind of counting on. They were both transfers
- 0:59Speaker 3: to come in Ingram, whose dad, Bobby was a receiver
- 1:02Speaker 3: with the Seahawks when I was coaching there, so Penn
- 1:05Speaker 3: State Bobby was Yeah, Dean came from Wisconsin. And then
- 1:09Speaker 3: there was another kid who blew out his knee this
- 1:12Speaker 3: second day of practice. So we were counting on those guys.
- 1:16Speaker 3: But a bunch of these young guys have stepped up,
- 1:18Speaker 3: and I feel good about our secondary. We don't have
- 1:20Speaker 3: a lot of depth, but we've got enough to at
- 1:22Speaker 3: least play, you know, seven eight nine guys. And you
- 1:26Speaker 3: mentioned Tooey coming back. You know, his his development since
- 1:30Speaker 3: I got here two years ago. Just to watch him
- 1:32Speaker 3: grow and just grasp the game and become, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 3: a leader and dependable and consistent, has really been fun.
- 1:39Speaker 3: He's a good inside linebacker. And we brought in some
- 1:42Speaker 3: transfer guys. We brought it in a junior college guy
- 1:45Speaker 3: last year named Amir Renwick, who's done it. He came in.
- 1:47Speaker 3: He's about two oh five, he's a two hundred and
- 1:48Speaker 3: twenty five pounder now, and you know, he's pretty nasty,
- 1:52Speaker 3: which you like, and so.
- 1:53Speaker 2: There's an interview with him. He sounds nasty.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Well, he's a great kid.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I mean, you know when you talk to a guy
- 1:59Speaker 1: and he goes, yeah, dude, I don't want to be
- 2:01Speaker 1: on the field facing you.
- 2:02Speaker 3: No, yeah, he didn't say a lot. Yeah, he's uh,
- 2:06Speaker 3: he's a great kid though. I mean he's you know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: he came from you know, he's made something of his
- 2:11Speaker 3: life and he's still making something of his life when
- 2:13Speaker 3: a lot of people would have given up. So it's
- 2:16Speaker 3: a good group of linebackers. But I still think the
- 2:18Speaker 3: strength of our defenses is up front, you know it is.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You've got you talked about dow And and Price and Gilawnie,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and then we brought in some guys that are really
- 2:28Speaker 3: good players as well. So we've got to be strong
- 2:30Speaker 3: up there. You know, you've got to be good on
- 2:32Speaker 3: the defensive line.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You know, you got five men in the defensive backfield.
- 2:35Speaker 1: You mentioned three safety's generally speaking, Deronte Jones. He's changed
- 2:41Speaker 1: his name Dronte. Now I didn't know that. No, No,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I used to.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Be Derante when I first met him. Now it's Ronte.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Does he call himself Ronte?
- 2:49Speaker 2: That's what he gets.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Well, I still call him Durrante, So that's news to me.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Wait a minute, So he does answer to Dorante.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Well, he answers to me when I call him other people.
- 3:00Speaker 3: He's a great kid. I mean, you talk.
- 3:02Speaker 2: About an awesome kid and legit football player.
- 3:04Speaker 3: He just like every day he brings it every single
- 3:07Speaker 3: day is intensity is awesome.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And you get Dixon Williams back. You had some injury
- 3:13Speaker 1: issues that experience.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and so you know you mentioned the secondary. It's
- 3:18Speaker 3: it's like it's not the traditional cornerback safety. You know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: we have a guy we call a dog. We have
- 3:23Speaker 3: a boundary corner and a boundary safety. And you have
- 3:26Speaker 3: a boundary corner, a boundary safety, your boundary corner, and
- 3:28Speaker 3: a field corner, left corner, right corner, usually left and right.
- 3:31Speaker 3: But it's not these it's they're not playing in traditional roles,
- 3:37Speaker 3: although they're doing traditional things that you do and coverage
- 3:40Speaker 3: and run support. So I like what we're doing. Like
- 3:43Speaker 3: I said, I think the most important thing is we
- 3:45Speaker 3: have the right players in the right spots and they
- 3:48Speaker 3: are embracing the things that we're asking to do and
- 3:50Speaker 3: it looks like they're enjoying it.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 1: My question is when you have a three down lineman
- 3:55Speaker 1: pass rush, how do you do it?
- 3:56Speaker 2: How do you get passed? How do you get pressure
- 3:58Speaker 2: on the other corner.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Well, I think it's you have to put out of
- 4:02Speaker 3: your head this thought that there's only three down guys.
- 4:05Speaker 3: You know, there's that the hybrid guy was. It was
- 4:10Speaker 3: a defensive end for us last year. They are all
- 4:12Speaker 3: defensive ends. Now they're just standing up and moving around.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You can bring linebackers, you can bring secondary guys. You know,
- 4:19Speaker 3: there's actually when you're playing this type of defense, it
- 4:23Speaker 3: actually gives you more flexibility to be creative in your
- 4:26Speaker 3: pressure packages. You know, because you've got guys like Donovan
- 4:30Speaker 3: or like Langston Hardy that can drop into coverage when
- 4:33Speaker 3: you know they're assuming a position at the line of
- 4:35Speaker 3: scrimmage that you know indicates they are rushing. So we
- 4:39Speaker 3: call them simulated pressures. You know, you're dropping guys that
- 4:42Speaker 3: would normally rush and rushing guys that would normally drop,
- 4:44Speaker 3: and you're trying to you're trying to create problems for
- 4:47Speaker 3: their protection.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So this isn't really a bend, don't break defense. This
- 4:52Speaker 1: is more of an aggressive if they're going to get
- 4:54Speaker 1: in your face defense.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Well, it's fun.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I want it is. You know, the secondary is not
- 5:00Speaker 3: I don't know what Ben, but don't break means like,
- 5:01Speaker 3: I don't know what prevent defense make means Like I've
- 5:04Speaker 3: been coaching for forty something years and those are terms
- 5:06Speaker 3: that I've never heard of coach use. I hear fans
- 5:09Speaker 3: and radio guys use it.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But I'm just trying to set you up here.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, ben, but don't break. I don't know what.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I heard that somewhere. I thought i'd throw it up.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Bob said it. I don't know. Are we ben but
- 5:27Speaker 3: not break? Or I just hope we don't bend too much?
- 5:29Speaker 3: And I hope we never break. You know, That's what
- 5:31Speaker 3: I hope.
- 5:31Speaker 2: But do you think you're going to create more turnovers
- 5:34Speaker 2: this way?
- 5:34Speaker 1: Is this the kind of thing where you're going to
- 5:36Speaker 1: your defense is going to turn into something of an offense?
- 5:40Speaker 3: So I mean that's the plan. I mean, that's the
- 5:42Speaker 3: plan every year on defense. But there's just more. It
- 5:46Speaker 3: feels like there's more opportunities to make big plays than
- 5:50Speaker 3: in a traditional type of defense that a lot of
- 5:53Speaker 3: people get stuck in. It also feels like at times
- 5:56Speaker 3: there's the opportunity to give up some big plays as well,
- 6:00Speaker 3: you know, and a lot of times it seems like,
- 6:03Speaker 3: you know that could be in the run game. You know,
- 6:05Speaker 3: there are some plays that can give you some problems.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Fortunately for us, those are plays that are often specializes in.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So since spring ball, we've had a chance to really
- 6:15Speaker 3: go every day against things that have given this defense
- 6:17Speaker 3: trouble in the past. Yea, so we've been able to
- 6:20Speaker 3: learn how to adjust.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, good, that's good to hear. Actually, all right, Jim
- 6:23Speaker 1: Morra with us. We'll be back in just a moment the.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 6:28Speaker 1: We got a couple of questions from the crowd.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Stay tuned.
