- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:19Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is Danny Parkins Friday, a new variety
- 0:26Speaker 1: of Friday that we got over here. Danny Parkins, check
- 0:28Speaker 1: him out on FS1. First things first, five to six
- 0:31Speaker 1: Eastern on FS1.
- 0:33Speaker 2: What's going on, sir? Chilling, Bo. I was looking through
- 0:36Speaker 2: old text messages. First time I came on this show,
- 0:39Speaker 2: I was previewing the AFC West for you when I
- 0:43Speaker 2: was doing radio in Kansas City like 11 years ago.
- 0:47Speaker 2: How long have you been doing this thing?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Okay, so this incarnation of it, I have been doing
- 0:53Speaker 1: as a podcast now.
- 0:55Speaker 2: This is the eighth year.
- 0:56Speaker 1: That was the radio era, which started in 2015.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I want to say. So yeah, we are in year 11. Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 2: so I'm a year one guest.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Okay, we got some day ones in the house. We
- 1:10Speaker 1: got some day ones. There's also fun overlap. I like
- 1:12Speaker 1: to tell people this because by and large, the people
- 1:15Speaker 1: that I have on this show are my friends who
- 1:18Speaker 1: just happen to be dope. Like we make new friends
- 1:20Speaker 1: along the way. Like you guys really like Deontay Lee
- 1:22Speaker 1: from Naranger. We're going to have him.
- 1:23Speaker 2: On more with the show.
- 1:25Speaker 1: But Danny went to college with Nick, very close with Nick.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And Another fun fact to show the overlap of it,
- 1:33Speaker 1: Danny's brother worked with my brother in the textbook industry.
- 1:38Speaker 2: That is 100% true. And I finally got on a
- 1:43Speaker 2: text chat with your brother recently. We might tee it
- 1:46Speaker 2: up and play some golf one day. But yeah, I
- 1:48Speaker 2: know you and your brother are very close. Me and
- 1:50Speaker 2: my brother passed away a couple of years ago, but
- 1:53Speaker 2: he was my best friend. And so the interconnections is crazy.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And then I know also- Lefkoe who was between me
- 2:01Speaker 2: and Nick at Syracuse you know him and I watched
- 2:05Speaker 2: like 20 consecutive NFL Sundays together and had a great
- 2:09Speaker 2: time yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I tried to crash you guys group chat only to
- 2:11Speaker 1: find out that it was for um wagering it was.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Mostly gambling it's mostly it's mostly gambling with like a
- 2:18Speaker 2: side amount of like criticizing people in media behind their back.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Like I was feeling left out and then I got
- 2:24Speaker 1: there and realized oh y'all don't y'all don't want I
- 2:28Speaker 1: don't belong I need to.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Go back with my kind.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I get this. But Nate, but you play blackjack now.
- 2:34Speaker 2: That is true. I do play blackjack. There's just not
- 2:36Speaker 2: a lot to talk about in there.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Like Lefkoe, like the fun part for me with Lefkoe
- 2:40Speaker 1: was when I went down to Atlanta to do an
- 2:43Speaker 1: alt cast for TNT. And that was the most time
- 2:45Speaker 1: I spent with Lefkoe. And I realized, oh, you and
- 2:48Speaker 1: Nick are the same person.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I misunderstood.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Like you guys got rolled off the factory, like the
- 2:55Speaker 1: same factory line.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. The Black Wives Club, as they like to
- 3:02Speaker 2: call it. Yeah. And Lefkoe, he has a superpower of likability,
- 3:08Speaker 2: is how I describe him. Like, in college, he was, like,
- 3:12Speaker 2: not nearly as serious in the student media stuff as
- 3:15Speaker 2: Nick and I was. Like, he was, like, much more
- 3:17Speaker 2: fun and social and friends with everybody. And then he
- 3:21Speaker 2: put together his TV resume reel, like, The week before
- 3:24Speaker 2: he graduated, he just was faking television stand-ups all over
- 3:28Speaker 2: campus because he hadn't been doing the work. And I
- 3:30Speaker 2: was like, this guy's going to be awesome. I didn't
- 3:33Speaker 2: sell a single share of Lefkoe stock because every single
- 3:37Speaker 2: person that meets him just loves him.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Brother, I walked into the bar of the Four Seasons
- 3:41Speaker 1: in Atlanta at closing time with Adam Lefkoe, and it
- 3:44Speaker 1: was like Norm pulled up. Hell yeah. He's the king
- 3:49Speaker 1: of this. But hey, we got a lot of NFL
- 3:51Speaker 1: action this week. I actually just realized something that is
- 3:54Speaker 1: going on in two different games that really may be
- 3:57Speaker 1: the most interesting thing that we've got going on this weekend. Like,
- 4:00Speaker 1: there are games with teams that have good records, right?
- 4:03Speaker 1: The 49ers are playing against the Buccaneers. Of course, we
- 4:06Speaker 1: have America's team playing against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And I normally don't stay at Nick's house late for night.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Games, but I'm, don't tell him, but I'm pulling up
- 4:15Speaker 1: in the Barry Sanders jersey on Sunday because, you know, like,
- 4:19Speaker 1: we gone.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I got my.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Squads in the game, but we have a ghost of
- 4:23Speaker 1: it's not even the ghost of Christmas past weekend. It's
- 4:27Speaker 1: a what could have been weekend because there are two
- 4:29Speaker 1: games with teams. Who have quarterbacks where they will be
- 4:35Speaker 1: playing against a team who has the quarterback they could
- 4:38Speaker 1: have drafted and perhaps wish that they had.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I will start with the one that is most germane
- 4:44Speaker 1: to your life as you are from Chicago. You are
- 4:47Speaker 1: a Chicago Bears fan and your guys are playing against
- 4:51Speaker 1: the Washington Commandos and you could have had Jaden Daniels. Instead,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you got Caleb Williams, though I am inclined to make
- 4:57Speaker 1: the point slash raise the argument that the problem in
- 4:59Speaker 1: this case is who could the Bears take and it
- 5:03Speaker 1: not go bad given that they ain't had a good
- 5:05Speaker 1: quarterback since. And I know, look, it sounds corny to
- 5:09Speaker 1: say it, but.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's the truth. It goes back to Sid Luckman. Yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 2: that's right. I mean, so I turned 39 in a
- 5:16Speaker 2: couple of weeks and I've never seen a good quarterback.
- 5:21Speaker 1: You didn't even get McMahon.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Exactly. I didn't get McMahon. I got Jay Cutler. And
- 5:27Speaker 2: Jay Cutler, when they acquired him, I was like, this
- 5:30Speaker 2: is unbelievable. And then when he left, he was the
- 5:33Speaker 2: exact same guy that they acquired, but he was, he
- 5:36Speaker 2: did not, he did not get 1% better. It was
- 5:39Speaker 2: just the same like back foot interceptions, maddening arm talent
- 5:42Speaker 2: and nothing between the years. Eric Kramer had a nice season.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Justin Fields had some sick runs and that's about it.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And yeah, like, Hold on, you forgot about Rex.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Rex, I think, had to be the worst one because
- 5:55Speaker 1: the best of Rex Grossman was actually excellent.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Rex was frustrating, and Rex was on a team
- 6:02Speaker 2: that was, like, Devin Hassler was basically my favorite bear.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Until Fields came along, it was like, oh, that's the
- 6:07Speaker 2: most exciting bear with a football in his hands of
- 6:10Speaker 2: my entire life because, again, I didn't get Walter Payton. Right.
- 6:14Speaker 2: And so, yeah, I mean, I love that team, obviously, but, like,
- 6:17Speaker 2: that was, like, a classic Bears team that you could
- 6:19Speaker 2: relate to, like, your elders with. Cause it was like,
- 6:22Speaker 2: we don't got a quarterback, but we have an unbelievable defense.
- 6:25Speaker 2: You got Tillman and Earl Acker and Briggs and the
- 6:28Speaker 2: whole thing, Mike Brown, the whole thing. But I am
- 6:32Speaker 2: fine with Caleb. I'm still excited about Caleb. I thought
- 6:35Speaker 2: that Drake may was the debate with him. And it was,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I didn't believe in Jaden and I'm clearly wrong, but
- 6:42Speaker 2: like coming out of it, I thought it was totally
- 6:45Speaker 2: reasonable to say that the kid that had been the
- 6:48Speaker 2: best at every level of football was, that he had
- 6:51Speaker 2: played in, who won the Heisman Trophy, who could throw
- 6:53Speaker 2: the ball over the mountain. I thought it was totally
- 6:56Speaker 2: reasonable to be like, yeah, that's the guy I want.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And I think the debate, I don't know if you
- 7:01Speaker 2: agree or not, but I think it's long from settled
- 7:04Speaker 2: on who the best quarterback in that class is. Jaden
- 7:08Speaker 2: came out and lapped the field in year one. I
- 7:11Speaker 2: would argue the best rookie quarterback season I'd ever seen
- 7:14Speaker 2: when you factor in what he was asked to do,
- 7:17Speaker 2: third downs, fourth downs, and then nine wins in one
- 7:21Speaker 2: score games going all the way to the NFC championship game,
- 7:24Speaker 2: the clutchness, all that stuff. Like he was amazing, but
- 7:27Speaker 2: 10 years from now, I'm not convinced he's going to
- 7:29Speaker 2: be the best quarterback in that class. I don't think
- 7:31Speaker 2: that discussion's over yet. I mean, Baker Mayfield and Sam
- 7:35Speaker 2: Donald are good now, dude. I don't know.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Daniel Jones appears to be good now. Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah. And I will say this for bears fans. The
- 7:50Speaker 2: one thing we have in the quarterback arc of pain
- 7:55Speaker 2: is that we've just never had anyone good. like no
- 7:59Speaker 2: one's left Chicago and then become good. We've just like
- 8:03Speaker 2: never had hope ever. Whereas Jets fans got to be
- 8:06Speaker 2: like Darnold and Gino and like Cleveland fans. That's a
- 8:09Speaker 2: good boy. We had Baker, like no, like Mitch Trubisky
- 8:12Speaker 2: didn't go to Buffalo and like make it a debate
- 8:15Speaker 2: with Josh Allen. You know what I mean? Like Justin
- 8:18Speaker 2: Fields is still Justin Fields taking the same terrible sacks
- 8:22Speaker 2: that he took in Chicago. So like, I don't know
- 8:24Speaker 2: if that makes it better or worse because we've just
- 8:27Speaker 2: never been close to having the guy.
- 8:29Speaker 1: So the one thing I've always thought about Justin Fields
- 8:31Speaker 1: with Chicago that I think had to be torturous for
- 8:34Speaker 1: Bears fans. And I make this point here a lot
- 8:37Speaker 1: that you have to appreciate the fact that Chicago's one
- 8:40Speaker 1: Chicago home.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Team is the entire Big Ten team.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And so that means that you have a city full
- 8:45Speaker 1: of people that Justin Fields ate their asses up for
- 8:49Speaker 1: two years. And so you're like, hell yeah, give us
- 8:52Speaker 1: that guy.
- 8:53Speaker 2: They were all on board with it. And then it's like, sigh.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And he seems to be, I would say, a serviceable
- 9:01Speaker 1: NFL quarterback.
- 9:03Speaker 2: He is in full-on journeyman status.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And again, maybe he gets good because it is not
- 9:08Speaker 1: really as though he has left and wound up in
- 9:10Speaker 1: the best places for quarterbacks.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Since he got out of Chicago.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:14Speaker 1: With Williams, I feel like you have the right attitude, sir.
- 9:19Speaker 1: There's no reason to be impatient about this. This is
- 9:22Speaker 1: what you got at least through next year in all likelihood. Like,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I don't think that they're in a place where next
- 9:28Speaker 1: year that they'll make a move like what the Colts did,
- 9:31Speaker 1: where they brought somebody in to take the job away.
- 9:34Speaker 2: From Anthony Richardson I.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Don't think that's gonna happen you might as well just
- 9:37Speaker 1: buckle up for this because how good he is right
- 9:39Speaker 1: now actually doesn't matter we've seen guys be decent in
- 9:42Speaker 1: years one and two and then three or four it
- 9:44Speaker 1: doesn't go case in point Baker Mayfield like everybody on
- 9:47Speaker 1: the oh man the the Browns gave up on Baker
- 9:49Speaker 1: Mayfield all of us gave up on Baker Mayfield what
- 9:51Speaker 1: are you talking about he went to two other places
- 9:53Speaker 1: that were like no I'm good they got an actual
- 9:55Speaker 1: goddamn genius down there in Los Angeles and he was
- 9:58Speaker 1: like hey man appreciate what you did for us though
- 10:00Speaker 1: But we're going to go get Matthew Stafford.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Right. I mean, Baker got four full years in Cleveland.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Like four full years. Now he won a playoff game
- 10:09Speaker 2: and obviously it's aged poorly for them, but he got
- 10:11Speaker 2: plenty of opportunities. And listen, we've watched enough football together.
- 10:15Speaker 2: You're like, I watch it all. I watch it all.
- 10:18Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that like, some sort of genius
- 10:21Speaker 2: gifted eye scout talent or whatever, but like, I do
- 10:24Speaker 2: trust my eye test. Caleb Williams is awesome. Like the
- 10:29Speaker 2: physical tools of Caleb Williams in there somewhere is an
- 10:34Speaker 2: elite quarterback. And that's why they hired Ben Johnson and
- 10:38Speaker 2: gave him 10 million plus per year to get it
- 10:42Speaker 2: out of him. I don't know if he will, but
- 10:44Speaker 2: like that, what I always say is, The most impressive
- 10:49Speaker 2: quarterback season I've ever seen was 2011 Aaron Rodgers. Aaron
- 10:55Speaker 2: Rodgers that year was 45 touchdowns, six interceptions, completed 68%
- 11:00Speaker 2: of his passes, but also led the NFL in yards
- 11:04Speaker 2: per attempt. Like he was not just checking it down
- 11:08Speaker 2: for his complete. He was big game hunting and not
- 11:11Speaker 2: turning the ball over. It was unbelievable. You could say
- 11:15Speaker 2: Mahomes is 5,000 yard, 50 touchdown season, but like To me,
- 11:20Speaker 2: that type of player that doesn't turn the ball over,
- 11:24Speaker 2: that has a rocket for an arm, that has plus
- 11:27Speaker 2: athleticism and mobility, and is not just looking to goose
- 11:32Speaker 2: his completion percentage with little checkdowns, but is willing to
- 11:35Speaker 2: throw second and third level throws, to me, that's the
- 11:38Speaker 2: highest ceiling of quarterback play that you can get. It's Mahomes,
- 11:42Speaker 2: it's Allen, it's what I think Herbert is. And it's
- 11:45Speaker 2: what Rodgers was. And Rodgers is Caleb's favorite player ever.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It's who he emulates his game after. So, like, I'm
- 11:51Speaker 2: seeing this one through to the end.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to say I got something wrong. The
- 11:56Speaker 1: Rams had brought Baker in that year because I think
- 11:58Speaker 1: Stafford had gotten hurt and they needed a stopgap.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the year he played on, like, 72
- 12:03Speaker 2: hours notice or something. Yes, yes. In McVay's system when
- 12:06Speaker 2: he played in that game.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So, my bad. It was the Carolina Panthers. Now, Grant,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I don't know who could have been. They were cheeks
- 12:13Speaker 1: that year. My goodness, they were so bad. But the
- 12:17Speaker 1: arc goes. And if I were you, what's the alternative?
- 12:22Speaker 1: Like if you're watching college football right now, who's the
- 12:25Speaker 1: guy that you're seeing where you're like, oh, okay, cool,
- 12:27Speaker 1: we could do that. Like we found out as much
- 12:29Speaker 1: as people bugged out when the Falcons took Michael Penix
- 12:33Speaker 1: last year, the point was there's nobody in this draft
- 12:38Speaker 1: and it.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Doesn't look like there's anybody in next year's draft. That's
- 12:42Speaker 2: going to be there. We're in a weird quarterback place.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I've talked about this before where there was this giant
- 12:48Speaker 1: gap between really.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Like 2005 and.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I'm not even sure exactly when we'd say it would,
- 12:56Speaker 1: it really rounds out. Maybe you get into like 16,
- 12:58Speaker 1: 18 or whatever, where this country just didn't produce a
- 13:01Speaker 1: lot of quarterbacks. Like you had really good old quarterbacks
- 13:04Speaker 1: and you had really good young quarterbacks, but really not
- 13:07Speaker 1: that much in between. So like my homes and Baker
- 13:10Speaker 1: Mayfield are both 30 years old at this point, guys
- 13:14Speaker 1: older than them that are good.
- 13:17Speaker 2: The list ain't long, man. Like, it's not there.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And now it's looking like we're looking at who's coming
- 13:23Speaker 1: up from these lower levels.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Where's the guy? Right. Listen, I think Caleb's class is
- 13:29Speaker 2: really good. Yeah, it's an interesting, like, guys older than Mahomes. Dak, like,
- 13:33Speaker 2: I don't know where you are on Dak, but I
- 13:34Speaker 2: think Dak is playing at a very high level. I
- 13:37Speaker 2: think he's playing at a very high level right now.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And then, yeah, you get to guys that are much older,
- 13:41Speaker 2: like Stafford and all of that. So, yeah, it's hard.
- 13:44Speaker 2: But I will also just say, and I don't know
- 13:46Speaker 2: where you're at on this, like, I have no doubt
- 13:49Speaker 2: that Caleb Williams is good. Like, I think Bust is
- 13:52Speaker 2: off the table with Caleb. Ooh, I do not. I
- 13:56Speaker 2: do not. Man, last year, they fired his play caller
- 14:03Speaker 2: nine games in. They did. They did. The Bears had
- 14:07Speaker 2: never in the history of their franchise fired a head
- 14:10Speaker 2: coach in season. And then they fired Matt Eberflus in season.
- 14:14Speaker 1: He.
- 14:15Speaker 2: They lost to the Lions on Thanksgiving because Eberflus forgot
- 14:19Speaker 2: that he was allowed to call timeouts. They lost one
- 14:22Speaker 2: of those games to the Packers because a field goal
- 14:24Speaker 2: was blocked when the Packers like cheated the pass rush
- 14:28Speaker 2: and the league just didn't call it. And afterwards, they're like,
- 14:30Speaker 2: my bad, probably should have called it. Lost a game
- 14:33Speaker 2: in overtime to the Vikings where he had 340 yards
- 14:36Speaker 2: and two touchdowns and scored 27 points. They just happened
- 14:39Speaker 2: to lose like he's not bad. He's not bad. And
- 14:43Speaker 2: I think he's been getting better over the course of
- 14:45Speaker 2: this year. There will be rough moments because it's the
- 14:48Speaker 2: Bears and that's inevitable. But Caleb is going to be fine. Now,
- 14:51Speaker 2: he might end up being... It might end up being
- 14:55Speaker 2: like a Kyler Murray, Trevor Lawrence situation. Like where the
- 14:59Speaker 2: Bears give him a second contract because the talent is
- 15:02Speaker 2: too tantalizing and then he never ultimately realizes the potential.
- 15:07Speaker 2: But moving on in a year... like after next year
- 15:11Speaker 2: from Caleb and not giving him a second deal, I'll
- 15:14Speaker 2: be floored. I will be absolutely floored if that happens.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Holds the ball too long, and that's a me thing, right?
- 15:21Speaker 1: Like guys who hold the ball, that's the Justin Fields thing.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Holds the ball a little too long. When the Steelers
- 15:27Speaker 1: had Justin Fields and Russell Wilson on the same team,
- 15:31Speaker 1: I was like, ooh, boy, you're going to hold the
- 15:33Speaker 1: ball too long in every play.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Now, you know who else holds the ball too long?
- 15:36Speaker 2: Josh Allen. The problem is... Nobody can tackle that big balloon.
- 15:41Speaker 2: That's right.
- 15:43Speaker 1: He is the only, dude, he holds it too long.
- 15:47Speaker 1: He'll give you, he's in the Stafford Carlson Palmer. I'm
- 15:49Speaker 1: going to give you one or two chances to pick
- 15:52Speaker 1: this off.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Except nobody ever does. Yeah, that's my thing on Jordan Love.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'm like convinced that Jordan Love should lead the league
- 15:58Speaker 2: in interceptions. It's like a horseshoe up his ass every
- 16:03Speaker 2: time they just drop these picks. No, listen, Caleb last
- 16:06Speaker 2: year took 68 sacks. That's impossible.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And the the next gen stat that I did not know,
- 16:13Speaker 2: even though I watched every snap of that season and
- 16:15Speaker 2: it like it felt this way, but I just had
- 16:16Speaker 2: never dug into the numbers. But they showed it on
- 16:18Speaker 2: the first or second game this year on one of
- 16:20Speaker 2: the broadcasts. Twenty seven of those sacks took more than
- 16:25Speaker 2: five seconds. Yeah. I bet you Peyton Manning didn't take
- 16:31Speaker 2: 27 five plus second sacks in his entire career. His life.
- 16:37Speaker 2: That is an impossibility in one football season. But again,
- 16:40Speaker 2: like that's why Ben Johnson is here to get that
- 16:43Speaker 2: out of him.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And I will say a significant improvement in a way.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Sacks are a quarterback stat, right? Like I'm a firm
- 16:51Speaker 1: believer in that. 68 and 17 games last year and
- 16:55Speaker 1: four games.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It's been seven.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Yeah that's that's still a few more than you would
- 16:59Speaker 1: prefer but that's a lot.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Better than what we were talking about oh yeah and
- 17:05Speaker 2: like plenty of guys I mean now with how much
- 17:08Speaker 2: you're dropping back to pass like you know listen I
- 17:11Speaker 2: said before the year get below 50 and I would
- 17:15Speaker 2: be and you're like for year two in terms of
- 17:17Speaker 2: improvement like at least then you're more in the like
- 17:21Speaker 2: Joe Burrow like just be the the fifth most sacked
- 17:25Speaker 2: quarterback in the NFL. Right. Just don't be, don't be
- 17:29Speaker 2: two standard deviations beyond the second place guy from, from
- 17:34Speaker 2: most sacks. And I think he's trending in that direction. Now,
- 17:37Speaker 2: another one of these games, what it could have been.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I didn't realize that the chargers are playing against the
- 17:42Speaker 1: dolphins and this could be the end for somebody.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:47Speaker 1: So apparently Tua is not healthy and he, I have
- 17:51Speaker 1: a certain respect for that young man that stops me
- 17:54Speaker 1: from saying, oh, so now you're feeling a little bit
- 17:57Speaker 1: hurt when the Justin Herbert game is coming up. Hey,
- 18:01Speaker 1: I don't think he that kind of guy.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Right. Like, I don't think he got that in him.
- 18:04Speaker 1: But there's some people that I would ask that question
- 18:06Speaker 1: about under these circumstances, because, I mean, for those of
- 18:11Speaker 1: you who don't know, Parkins is a bit of a
- 18:15Speaker 1: Justin Herbert apologist.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Yeah. That's the appropriate term to use. Badge of honor.
- 18:24Speaker 1: But the Dolphins definitely wish they had taken him over
- 18:28Speaker 1: to it. That's a no-brainer situation. That was what was
- 18:33Speaker 1: so crazy about when the Browns took Dylan Gabriel in
- 18:36Speaker 1: the third round. I thought that after Tua, the league
- 18:39Speaker 1: was out on these small-arm quarterbacks. I thought that we
- 18:41Speaker 1: had understood. I personally can't imagine my ass being on
- 18:46Speaker 1: the line for a pick, and I'm going to get
- 18:47Speaker 1: a dude that don't throw hard.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Exactly. Now, like, I guess people are like Brock Purdy,
- 18:54Speaker 2: just like, can you be a processing post-snap analysis? Smart guy.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I want the guy who can throw it over the mountain. Right. I, I,
- 19:05Speaker 2: and I, yes, Herbert Stan apologist. I like Matt Stafford.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I like big armed quarterbacks, man, because they can make
- 19:14Speaker 2: every throw on the field. And I, Again, it's an
- 19:18Speaker 2: eye test thing. And by the way, the NFL GMs
- 19:21Speaker 2: seem to agree with me. Like those anonymous polls that
- 19:24Speaker 2: like the athletic and ESPN puts out before the year scouts, GMs,
- 19:28Speaker 2: coaches rank the quarterbacks. Herbert is ahead of Jalen hurts
- 19:33Speaker 2: on all of them. He's light years ahead of two
- 19:35Speaker 2: on all of them. He was like seventh, sixth, ninth.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Like he's, He hasn't won like that. He hasn't produced
- 19:42Speaker 2: like that. But if you were starting a team tomorrow,
- 19:45Speaker 2: and I know this is like Kevin Wilds on First
- 19:47Speaker 2: Things First. He hates these arguments, but he's not here.
- 19:50Speaker 2: so let's do it like if you were starting a
- 19:52Speaker 2: team tomorrow first pick Mahomes second pick Allen third pick
- 19:59Speaker 2: Lamar with the fourth pick in the draft Bomani Jones
- 20:03Speaker 2: selects Oh, boy, that's a tough question. I mean, it's
- 20:07Speaker 2: on the board that it's Herbert over Burrow. It is.
- 20:12Speaker 1: My Burrow point always is, and this is not his fault,
- 20:16Speaker 1: but I've never seen him play without some form of
- 20:20Speaker 1: the Avengers alongside of him.
- 20:22Speaker 2: That is the only one.
- 20:25Speaker 1: The thing with Burrow obviously is I've never seen him
- 20:28Speaker 1: blow a 70-point lead in a playoff game to the
- 20:31Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that was bad. That was a toughie. That was
- 20:36Speaker 2: a tough one. That was bad.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Whether you take Jaden Daniels over him, I still have
- 20:42Speaker 1: a twinge.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Just a little, yeah. You know what I mean? Just
- 20:48Speaker 2: a touch of, yeah. Right.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I understand why you would take Justin Herbert over the
- 20:53Speaker 1: leader of America's team, the Detroit Lions, who has been
- 20:57Speaker 1: to a Super Bowl before, came very close to another
- 20:59Speaker 1: Super Bowl.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Now, You mentioned Jordan Love. I'm a... You're a Love guy.
- 21:08Speaker 2: I see the vision. I see the other thing, too.
- 21:11Speaker 1: It is amazing, by the way, how all of us
- 21:13Speaker 1: can pick one of these quarterbacks who does shit like
- 21:17Speaker 1: that and just decide that.
- 21:19Speaker 2: That's ours for whatever reason.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Like, look, I'm with you. The guy that can throw
- 21:22Speaker 1: it over the mountain. I'm still holding out hope on
- 21:25Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson. I still think there's time for somebody to
- 21:28Speaker 1: figure this out.
- 21:29Speaker 2: There is time. He hasn't played enough. I mean, he
- 21:32Speaker 2: hasn't played a full season's worth of games. No. Yeah,
- 21:35Speaker 2: so there's definitely time on Anthony Richardson. But also, with Herbert, man,
- 21:43Speaker 2: he still holds the record for most touchdown passes as
- 21:46Speaker 2: a rookie. He does. He came in and put 31
- 21:49Speaker 2: on the board as a rookie. And... Shane Steichen was
- 21:53Speaker 2: that offensive coordinator and Shane Steichen seems to be a
- 21:55Speaker 2: pretty damn good coach. And it's been, you know, he's
- 21:58Speaker 2: had Anthony Lynn as a head coach. He's had Brandon
- 22:00Speaker 2: Staley as a head coach. Now he's had Harbaugh. He
- 22:02Speaker 2: had Joe Lombardi. He had Kellen Moore. Now he's got
- 22:05Speaker 2: Greg Roman. Like there's been a lot of institutional change
- 22:09Speaker 2: around him and not to mention the chargering stuff and
- 22:14Speaker 2: bad injuries around them and missed kicks and all of
- 22:16Speaker 2: this stuff. And this dude just, he ain't the problem.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I'm convinced that he isn't the problem there. And we
- 22:24Speaker 2: can't take a hypothetical world and put Justin Herbert in
- 22:29Speaker 2: Philadelphia and put Jalen Hurts in LA. But man, for
- 22:32Speaker 2: a week, I'd love to see it because I don't
- 22:34Speaker 2: think A.J. Brown and Devontae Smith would be complaining. Like,
- 22:39Speaker 2: I just I just at some point I have to
- 22:41Speaker 2: trust my eyes and be like, he's one of those dudes.
- 22:45Speaker 2: He and eventually he will get there. So you just
- 22:48Speaker 2: rate what could be a very fun game to play. Like,
- 22:51Speaker 2: remember when.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Michael Parsons stupid ass is getting on his podcast and
- 22:53Speaker 1: listen to top five quarterbacks.
- 22:55Speaker 2: It didn't list his own guy. Yeah.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Like I dare somebody to go to the Eagles locker
- 22:59Speaker 1: room and play.
- 23:00Speaker 2: That same game with those two dudes. Of course there's no,
- 23:04Speaker 2: there's no way if you injected them with truth serum
- 23:08Speaker 2: that they think he's a top five guy. Maybe he's
- 23:10Speaker 2: a top five leader. Fine. Maybe he's a top five teammate. Fine.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Top five runner. Fine. But I like my quarterbacks to throw.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I'm old fashioned. He was, he was 22nd in the
- 23:24Speaker 2: NFL and pass attempts last year. Uh, Hertz was like,
- 23:28Speaker 2: get out of here.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Like, Oh, Did you see they had the players only
- 23:31Speaker 1: meeting with A.J.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Brown, Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts? And I have to say,
- 23:36Speaker 2: why wasn't anybody else invited? I absolutely like Devante Smith
- 23:41Speaker 2: has the same amount of gripe that A.J. Brown has.
- 23:43Speaker 2: And by the way, grapes just as much. Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Just like a little quieter about it. But frequency is
- 23:50Speaker 2: just as much. And he's not as good as A.J. Brown,
- 23:53Speaker 2: but he's damn good. Like, he also should feel like,
- 23:57Speaker 2: throw me the damn ball. So, yeah. Well, he also
- 24:00Speaker 2: had to do more to get there. Little fella, you
- 24:02Speaker 2: know what I mean? No question.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Like, do you have any clue what I had to
- 24:05Speaker 1: do to get here? I don't think you do. Throw
- 24:07Speaker 1: me the goddamn ball.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Throw me the goddamn ball. But, yeah, so I just,
- 24:12Speaker 2: to the Tua thing, like, I don't think that Tua
- 24:15Speaker 2: would be the type of guy to back out of
- 24:16Speaker 2: this game either, but also, they've both been paid. Makes
- 24:22Speaker 2: it easier to be like, eh, my team got it wrong,
- 24:25Speaker 2: but I got $ 200 million, so who cares?
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'm just saying, I've talked about this throughout the year,
- 24:31Speaker 1: that the Dolphins don't have a bye until week 12, right? Which,
- 24:36Speaker 1: to me, the coaches get nervous about losing their jobs
- 24:40Speaker 1: at a bye, right? Because, you know, you want to
- 24:43Speaker 1: have a little extra time to get everything going. They've
- 24:45Speaker 1: already gotten through their Thursday night game. That is also
- 24:48Speaker 1: another time that people like to fire their coaches. However,
- 24:53Speaker 1: if the Dolphins come out here under the circumstances that
- 24:56Speaker 1: I just described and get smashed at home in a
- 25:02Speaker 1: game where, by the way, the Chargers only three and
- 25:04Speaker 1: a half point favorite, right? So this isn't a game
- 25:06Speaker 1: that Miami should get their doors blown off. If they
- 25:08Speaker 1: get their doors blown off, those are the games that
- 25:11Speaker 1: get people fired.
- 25:13Speaker 2: I agree with you. In Miami, though, if I was ranking,
- 25:19Speaker 2: there's a big three in every organization, coach, GM, quarterback.
- 25:23Speaker 2: if I was ranking problems for the Dolphins, coach is third. Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Coach is third. Like Chris Greer has been there 20
- 25:33Speaker 2: plus years. Oh, wow. That's now not as the GM,
- 25:37Speaker 2: but I still, yeah, but I think GM for the
- 25:39Speaker 2: last nine.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:41Speaker 2: He's, he's been a front office executive for the Dolphins
- 25:43Speaker 2: for literally over two decades. And he's the dude who
- 25:46Speaker 2: drafted to a over Herbert and McDaniel is what's an
- 25:53Speaker 2: indictment of him to me is that when Tua goes down,
- 25:55Speaker 2: no one else can run the offense. Like, whereas I
- 25:58Speaker 2: saw Matt LaFleur have Jordan Love go down and Malik
- 26:01Speaker 2: Willis come in and win a couple of games.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:04Speaker 2: So like, I'm not sitting here saying that Mike McDaniel
- 26:06Speaker 2: is a top five, top 10 coach. I don't know
- 26:08Speaker 2: that that to be true. In fact, overwhelmingly likely it isn't,
- 26:12Speaker 2: but he also got Tua to lead the NFL in scoring. Like,
- 26:18Speaker 2: they have had moments of excellence offensively that I am
- 26:22Speaker 2: not the game. I watched a couple of weeks ago
- 26:25Speaker 2: of them. I forget what the exact number was, but
- 26:28Speaker 2: to a completed like 11 or 12 passes behind the
- 26:33Speaker 2: line of scrimmage. And they put up a big number offensively.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Like he, he's doing a lot with a guy who
- 26:41Speaker 2: cannot throw the ball very far. And so I, if
- 26:44Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel is a, run game coordinator for a team
- 26:48Speaker 2: next year, like that's a great hire. And I think
- 26:51Speaker 2: there's a legitimate argument to say, Let's fire the GM,
- 26:55Speaker 2: move on from the quarterback as quickly as possible, which
- 26:57Speaker 2: is going to be really tough given his contract for
- 26:59Speaker 2: next year, and let Mike McDaniel actually pick a quarterback
- 27:03Speaker 2: who's got a skill set more attuned with modern NFL offense.
- 27:07Speaker 1: But again, what quarterback is this that we're talking about here?
- 27:10Speaker 2: Right, for sure. Right, like this is... For sure. I'm
- 27:13Speaker 2: just going to... It is so wild to me that
- 27:15Speaker 2: with all the resources that are now.
- 27:17Speaker 1: People can talk about quarterbacks are terribly coached, positioned out
- 27:19Speaker 1: of everything else.
- 27:20Speaker 2: No, I think quarterback's just really hard.
- 27:22Speaker 1: But with all the resources that are being devoted to
- 27:24Speaker 1: football at this point and how early kids start in
- 27:27Speaker 1: doing this and their quarterback is like the new violin
- 27:29Speaker 1: where rich people get their kids out here, anybody else,
- 27:32Speaker 1: when they're three years old and go up and up
- 27:34Speaker 1: and you still can't make more of them. I am
- 27:38Speaker 1: of the belief, I'm curious what you think about this,
- 27:40Speaker 1: still nothing matters more than physical endowments.
- 27:42Speaker 2: That's part of why I hold out hope on Richardson,
- 27:46Speaker 2: for example. Yes, there's obviously a huge skill component to this, but.
- 27:50Speaker 1: I watched Josh Allen walk into this league and could
- 27:54Speaker 1: not hit the broad sign of four bars.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Now look at it. All because he that guy. If
- 28:04Speaker 2: you could tell me that they had any idea how
- 28:07Speaker 2: to scout what was between the ears of Peyton Brady
- 28:12Speaker 2: and breeze, then I'd listen to the argument on the
- 28:16Speaker 2: other side of it, but they clearly can't like, like
- 28:20Speaker 2: those types of quarterbacks failed just as much as the
- 28:24Speaker 2: crazy athletic traits. He guys, you know, physical endowments to
- 28:28Speaker 2: use your phrase. Like, so yeah, of course, like, Give
- 28:31Speaker 2: me the guy that can run away from Micah Parsons. Yes.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Give me the guy that I can use all the
- 28:39Speaker 2: routes for A.J. Brown because I can throw a 15-yard out.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I can throw a post. I can throw a dig.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Of course, because we at least can scout those things.
- 28:51Speaker 2: We clearly cannot scout the post-snap processing. They try to,
- 28:56Speaker 2: the S2 test and all that nonsense. But they're clearly
- 28:59Speaker 2: so far away from being able to scout that. Yeah.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Give me the guy that runs a 4-4-40 and can
- 29:06Speaker 2: throw the football 98 miles an hour.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Well, a great example on that. We will go back
- 29:11Speaker 1: and look at the 2011 draft is one of the
- 29:13Speaker 1: all time great draft.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And when you go through it, I I can name
- 29:19Speaker 1: like off the top of my head, I can give
- 29:21Speaker 1: you four or five Hall of Famers.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Right. Von Miller, J.J. Watt.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Richard Sherman, Patrick Peterson, Julio Jones is probably going to
- 29:29Speaker 1: wind up making it. And then you have other guys
- 29:31Speaker 1: like Robert Quinn is in that draft. The Pouncey brothers, right?
- 29:35Speaker 1: It was just an incredibly loaded draft. All like even
- 29:39Speaker 1: some all like alton smith he could have held his
- 29:41Speaker 1: shit together like what he would have started into cam
- 29:43Speaker 1: newton Yeah, that's where we're getting to. Another one of
- 29:46Speaker 1: those cams. I can't remember if it was Hayward or Jordan.
- 29:48Speaker 1: I think it's in that draft also. But you redo
- 29:51Speaker 1: that draft. You still take Cam Newton, who was out
- 29:54Speaker 1: there running.
- 29:55Speaker 2: A high school offense. Yeah.
- 29:58Speaker 1: But when everybody shows up and that guy says he's
- 30:01Speaker 1: a quarterback, that's the guy we're taking.
- 30:04Speaker 2: In this draft. Yeah, no, you're right. Cam Newton won.
- 30:07Speaker 2: AJ Green, four. Yes. Patrick Peterson, five. Julio Jones, six.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Alden Smith, seven.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's pretty, that's, it's pretty, yeah, and Cam
- 30:16Speaker 2: Jordan was 24th. Oh, man.
- 30:20Speaker 1: In the first 12 picks, the only bust were the
- 30:22Speaker 1: quarterbacks that people tried to pretend might have been as
- 30:25Speaker 1: good as Cam Newton.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Yeah, Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert. Yes. Yeah, and Christian Ponder. Yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 2: that was. Yes, like Ryan Kerrigan just hanging out in
- 30:33Speaker 2: this draft, right? There's Cam Jordan. Mark Ingram. Cam, oh,
- 30:37Speaker 2: Cam Hayward was in this draft. Am I fat? Paul,
- 30:39Speaker 2: it was both.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Both camps all three camps yeah they're just collie kaepernick
- 30:44Speaker 1: and andy dalton just there at the top of the
- 30:46Speaker 1: second round like this was an incredible draft and cam
- 30:48Speaker 1: newton is not going to make the hall of fame
- 30:50Speaker 1: but damn it if you.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Redo that draft there is no question who i'm taking
- 30:53Speaker 2: number one and it's that guy yeah i i'm i'm
- 30:56Speaker 2: with you guy went 15 and won won an mvp
- 30:59Speaker 2: and carried carolina to a super bowl like yeah i
- 31:02Speaker 2: i i'll run it out there and and because again
- 31:05Speaker 2: like What if Cam Newton got Sean McVay? Right. Right? Like,
- 31:11Speaker 2: who the hell knows? Like, what if Cam Newton got
- 31:14Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan? Like, it just doesn't seem fair that Brock
- 31:17Speaker 2: Purdy gets Kyle Shanahan.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Well, it's not fair because that's what Kyle wants.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Right. Kyle's like, give me a bum who don't talk back.
- 31:27Speaker 2: But then he traded up for Trey Lance. I will never...
- 31:32Speaker 2: He traded three first round picks like six weeks before
- 31:36Speaker 2: the draft to move up from 13 to three and
- 31:40Speaker 2: then took Trey Lance. I'll never understand it.
- 31:42Speaker 1: While entertaining the possibility of taking Mac Jones with the
- 31:45Speaker 1: number three pick. I don't think Kyle has any actual
- 31:48Speaker 1: idea what he's doing when it comes to quarterbacks. It makes,
- 31:51Speaker 1: he is all over the place. It is so crazy
- 31:55Speaker 1: what he does and does not do. And with Trey Lance, look,
- 31:59Speaker 1: He helped to break Robert Griffin. I think that he
- 32:01Speaker 1: is complicit in how that ultimately went. And it looked
- 32:04Speaker 1: like he helped to break Trey Lance because we saw
- 32:07Speaker 1: Trey Lance with just a dollop of hardball on him
- 32:09Speaker 1: and was like, hey, man.
- 32:11Speaker 2: That one I think is lurking in a Darnold-y sort
- 32:14Speaker 2: of way. I mean, Trey Lance played like four games
- 32:19Speaker 2: for San Francisco. And then they're like, yeah, he's not
- 32:21Speaker 2: the guy. We're going to ride it out with Mr. Irrelevant.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I was like, really?
- 32:25Speaker 1: Well, the other thing, too, Kyle did with Robert and
- 32:28Speaker 1: Kyle did with him is a quarterback who can run
- 32:31Speaker 1: is not a running back.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Right. Like you can't be out here running. He's out
- 32:35Speaker 2: here running power. Yeah. Not with Trey Lance. What are
- 32:38Speaker 2: you doing? No, the, the, the, the, You want that
- 32:41Speaker 2: to be your slider, right? You work off your fastball, right?
- 32:47Speaker 2: Caleb runs around, but he's not a running quarterback, right?
- 32:51Speaker 2: Like Rodgers and Mahomes, they can run around, but they're
- 32:55Speaker 2: not running quarterback. Now, Josh Allen, to your point, he's
- 32:58Speaker 2: a polar bear. So you can run power with him,
- 33:01Speaker 2: and I'm not going to be that upset.
- 33:02Speaker 1: But he had never run– I've said this on this show,
- 33:04Speaker 1: so I don't know if you remember when people used
- 33:07Speaker 1: to say that I called him Jaheim Allen. And the
- 33:09Speaker 1: truth is, I did not call him Jaheim. But I noticed,
- 33:12Speaker 1: I always said that if his name was Jaheim, he'd
- 33:15Speaker 1: have been used much differently before he got. And you
- 33:17Speaker 1: look at it now, it still looked like he had
- 33:19Speaker 1: never run with a football before he got to the NFL.
- 33:21Speaker 1: But they started putting them Jaheim plays in there. And
- 33:24Speaker 1: that's when it started making sense. Those first two years,
- 33:27Speaker 1: they weren't really doing that. Once they started putting them
- 33:28Speaker 1: on the move. And there's no way that no big
- 33:31Speaker 1: old black galoop would have ever come out here and
- 33:34Speaker 1: not been running the ball like that. It just took
- 33:36Speaker 1: them forever to do the math on it. Then Kyle
- 33:39Speaker 1: looks at Trey Lance and was like, no, no, no,
- 33:41Speaker 1: we're not going to run around.
- 33:42Speaker 2: We're going to run, get your nose in there, son. What? Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Do you think when they made that trade that they
- 33:50Speaker 2: knew who they were taking? Because like, because if you
- 33:55Speaker 2: go back and look at it, it's also one of
- 33:56Speaker 2: the earliest trades ever. Like in terms of, I think
- 33:59Speaker 2: it might be the earliest, like in terms of like
- 34:02Speaker 2: all the, so I think they didn't know. And then
- 34:05Speaker 2: they're like, we're just taking a quarterback and we're going
- 34:08Speaker 2: to move up and we're going to scout. And they
- 34:09Speaker 2: took the kid from the FCS and then didn't give
- 34:12Speaker 2: him any time. It's the damnedest thing. Who didn't play
- 34:14Speaker 2: any games that year. Right.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Because that's the weird– that's the– The 2021 draft is
- 34:19Speaker 1: always going to be a weird one because it is
- 34:21Speaker 1: that one off of COVID. Where all these guys like
- 34:23Speaker 1: Rashawn Slater and Micah Parsons, who did not play that year,
- 34:27Speaker 1: walked in and it was all good. All those quarterbacks
- 34:30Speaker 1: who did play that year, none of them have gone
- 34:33Speaker 1: as well as we expected. Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields,
- 34:38Speaker 1: Trey Lance. It's a weird job. Also, Jamar Chase did
- 34:43Speaker 1: not play that year and then kicked in the door
- 34:46Speaker 1: when he got to the league.
- 34:47Speaker 2: It's wild stuff.
- 34:48Speaker 1: But coming up next, we got a couple coaches for
- 34:50Speaker 1: whom things are not going so well, and we'll talk
- 34:52Speaker 1: about that on the right time.

- 37:13Speaker 1: All right, we are back on the right time with
- 37:15Speaker 1: Danny Parkins, who is showing us what your dollar can
- 37:18Speaker 1: do in Westchester County. Boy, I hadn't been to Danny's
- 37:21Speaker 1: house yet. Danny hadn't been to my house yet. I
- 37:23Speaker 1: logged on to that space. I was like, is that
- 37:25Speaker 1: the Heisman Trophy?
- 37:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that was something my grandfather gave me way back
- 37:28Speaker 2: in the day. Your grandfather won the Heisman? He did not,
- 37:32Speaker 2: but he's a collector of sorts. Yeah, here's the thing
- 37:36Speaker 2: about my– and I haven't seen your place. I'm sure
- 37:38Speaker 2: it's lovely. I will confirm my place is lovely. I
- 37:41Speaker 2: am renting. I cannot afford to own my house, but
- 37:45Speaker 2: I can afford to live in my house. And when
- 37:48Speaker 2: I moved my wife and young family across the country
- 37:50Speaker 2: out of our dream home in Chicago, I wasn't about
- 37:54Speaker 2: to downsize. And so I'm living above my means here, Bo.
- 37:58Speaker 2: This TV thing better work out. You love what you
- 38:02Speaker 2: get here. You learn like, oh man, you got to
- 38:05Speaker 2: really be invested in this. Dude. Why, why is the
- 38:07Speaker 2: guacamole so much more expensive? Like it is outrageous.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Let me tell you where they getting in our pockets
- 38:14Speaker 1: on things that they're just like, since they hear they
- 38:18Speaker 1: going to pay for it.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Salads.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Dude, have you looked at the prices of salads on
- 38:24Speaker 1: a menu at a sit-down restaurant? And guys, I'm not,
- 38:27Speaker 1: I feel like you guys who are listening to this
- 38:29Speaker 1: are relating to me. I have this difficult thing, Danny,
- 38:32Speaker 1: where I like to talk about my life here, but
- 38:34Speaker 1: I have to be honest in the ways that my
- 38:36Speaker 1: life is not necessarily like other people's lives. And some
- 38:39Speaker 1: of they broke asses be getting mad about that. But
- 38:41Speaker 1: I'm really just trying to make sure that, but if
- 38:44Speaker 1: I act like it ain't like that, they gonna get
- 38:46Speaker 1: mad too and tell me that I lost touch or whatever, right?
- 38:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you're in a tough spot, but you've also been
- 38:51Speaker 2: doing this at a high level for a long time
- 38:53Speaker 2: and have no kids. Yeah, you get it, right?
- 38:55Speaker 1: But I'm just saying, just a restaurant where you might
- 39:00Speaker 1: take somebody, right? Where you would put on some nice clothes, perhaps,
- 39:04Speaker 1: and take somebody to go to this restaurant. They are
- 39:07Speaker 1: operating on the assumption, now that you're here, you're just
- 39:10Speaker 1: going to pay for it, right?
- 39:12Speaker 2: Like you're not going to get up and leave. It's
- 39:15Speaker 2: $ 15 for salads and it ain't got no meat in it.
- 39:19Speaker 2: It just got roughage. Bo, go to like Sweetgreen or
- 39:26Speaker 2: just salad. Get a salad to go. Like you don't
- 39:29Speaker 2: have to be. at a steakhouse where you dress nice
- 39:32Speaker 2: if i get a chicken caesar salad and yeah that
- 39:34Speaker 2: has meat in it fine but if i whatever get
- 39:37Speaker 2: your kale salad from just salad it's 13 49 plus.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Tax yo that's what i'm saying i didn't even talk
- 39:44Speaker 1: about going to the steakhouse right Like every time I
- 39:48Speaker 1: look at a salad price now, my question is the same.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Can this be shared?
- 39:52Speaker 1: Because there's no way in hell I'm eating $ 15 worth
- 39:54Speaker 1: of salad by myself.
- 39:56Speaker 2: It's an outrage. It's an outrage. It's nuts. It is
- 40:01Speaker 2: at every turn.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Now, I understand nobody wants to be honest about this,
- 40:05Speaker 1: but the truth is lettuce don't pick itself, right?
- 40:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I was going to say, I don't think we
- 40:10Speaker 2: want to get into that. That's part of it, right?
- 40:13Speaker 2: That's a....
- 40:15Speaker 1: Part of the discussion but they just trying to beat
- 40:17Speaker 1: us over the head for everything speaking of beating people
- 40:20Speaker 1: over the head it wasn't so much a head beating
- 40:22Speaker 1: that took place but we had this situation with the
- 40:25Speaker 1: arizona cardinals in the game that they gave away to
- 40:29Speaker 1: the worst team on earth just totally gave away to
- 40:32Speaker 1: the worst team on earth yeah um and i forget
- 40:35Speaker 1: buddy's name his name is not that important.
- 40:38Speaker 2: The running back yes emari de mercado That's how I
- 40:43Speaker 2: know you do TV shows and rundowns and notes packets.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Five days a week, buddy.
- 40:49Speaker 1: So he is running down the field. I'm sure most
- 40:52Speaker 1: of you have seen it, but if you haven't. basically
- 40:54Speaker 1: gets to the goal line and he does the thing
- 40:56Speaker 1: where he drops the ball but it's a little short
- 40:59Speaker 1: of the goal line though i agree with dominique i
- 41:01Speaker 1: think he scored the touchdown i like i i believe
- 41:04Speaker 1: that the i believe in the neighborhood play you know
- 41:06Speaker 1: what i'm saying like i think they're going to replay
- 41:08Speaker 1: on something like that is really petty and messy there
- 41:12Speaker 1: was no need to do that but anyway they said
- 41:14Speaker 1: he dropped the ball before he scored the touchdown he
- 41:16Speaker 1: comes over to the sideline and we had seen the
- 41:19Speaker 1: video and jonathan gannon the coach of the cardinals He
- 41:22Speaker 1: got off in his ass about it, right? Which, understandable
- 41:26Speaker 1: under the circumstances. And then the next day, Gannon came
- 41:30Speaker 1: out in public and apologized. And look, I did think
- 41:33Speaker 1: he was doing the most, but I didn't really think
- 41:35Speaker 1: that he necessarily needed to apologize. Then he got fined
- 41:38Speaker 1: $ 100, 000 and I was like, whoa. And then I saw
- 41:43Speaker 1: he was putting his hands.
- 41:45Speaker 2: On that dude. I will be shocked if he's the
- 41:49Speaker 2: coach next year. Oh, wow.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Hey man, that's how you lose a team right there.
- 41:58Speaker 1: And it sounds like it took him a long time.
- 42:01Speaker 2: To realize that he had done it.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Now, I guess a lot of this probably hinges on
- 42:07Speaker 1: whatever his patterns of behavior had been going into this
- 42:11Speaker 1: or whatever, but for- People bigger than him to look
- 42:17Speaker 1: at that and say that that was a $ 100, 000 fine.
- 42:23Speaker 2: He broke a lot of rules. Like the unwritten rules,
- 42:28Speaker 2: shall we say, in that case.
- 42:30Speaker 1: And I was floored when I saw how much he
- 42:32Speaker 1: got fined because I didn't think that anybody would ever
- 42:34Speaker 1: take up for a player in that way under those circumstances.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. So I was floored at how much he
- 42:40Speaker 2: got fined also.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Then....
- 42:45Speaker 2: It was fined by the team. Yeah. Like, which I
- 42:48Speaker 2: thought was the most interesting part of it because like,
- 42:51Speaker 2: I didn't see anyone outraged by what, what Jonathan Gannon did.
- 42:56Speaker 2: I didn't like, and now maybe internally the players were
- 42:59Speaker 2: furious about it. Obviously that's possible. But I didn't see
- 43:03Speaker 2: media uproar. The Players Union didn't file a grievance, at
- 43:07Speaker 2: least according to reports. There wasn't a viral take from
- 43:11Speaker 2: someone at FS1 or ESPN that got a ton of traction,
- 43:15Speaker 2: and then the quote-unquote outrage mob came after it. It
- 43:19Speaker 2: just seemed like it was the owner of the Cardinals
- 43:22Speaker 2: thought it was conduct unbecoming and fined him, which is admirable, but...
- 43:29Speaker 2: this is professional sports. Like I would have been calling
- 43:32Speaker 2: for him to be fired if it was high school
- 43:34Speaker 2: or even college, but I wasn't that outraged by it.
- 43:38Speaker 2: And I don't know if that's a bad look for me,
- 43:40Speaker 2: but what DeMarcado did was really dumb. Gannon clearly lost
- 43:45Speaker 2: his mind. You shouldn't do that. And he apologized for it.
- 43:49Speaker 2: According to the report, he apologized in front of the team. Like,
- 43:52Speaker 2: so I don't, I don't think it's a fireable offense.
- 43:56Speaker 2: And because it didn't seem like he lost the locker room,
- 44:00Speaker 2: there weren't like players coming out. It didn't become a
- 44:02Speaker 2: big thing on the sideline or anything like that. I
- 44:05Speaker 2: feel like football players kind of expect it from football coaches.
- 44:09Speaker 2: They shouldn't, but I feel like it's just kind of
- 44:11Speaker 2: part of the game. I think it's going to be
- 44:13Speaker 2: a non-story in two weeks.
- 44:15Speaker 1: So it's interesting I hear you say that because the
- 44:18Speaker 1: point that this is professional football is also the point.
- 44:21Speaker 2: That I would make.
- 44:22Speaker 1: But I take that in a different direction because the
- 44:26Speaker 1: pros or former pros that I talked to firmly believe
- 44:30Speaker 1: that this was well beyond the pale, right?
- 44:34Speaker 2: The, the video that came out of Gannon with this,
- 44:36Speaker 2: this instance, I mean, pros want to be treated with a,
- 44:39Speaker 2: an arrow. Like the point they always make.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I call my college coach coach and I call my
- 44:44Speaker 1: NFL coach Steve, right?
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Like this is, this is different.
- 44:48Speaker 1: So to me, I don't know how much you know
- 44:51Speaker 1: about Michael Bidwell, the owner of the Arizona Cardinals, but
- 44:54Speaker 1: that is not a champion of labor. Right.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Right. Yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 1: That is not a that is the fact that they
- 44:59Speaker 1: did all of that. I don't think based on what
- 45:02Speaker 1: we saw, because at first I kind of thought similarly
- 45:05Speaker 1: to the way that you did, that that didn't look
- 45:07Speaker 1: that crazy. And I didn't see everybody else reacting in
- 45:09Speaker 1: that way.
- 45:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:09Speaker 1: But I don't think that Mike Bidwell himself woke up
- 45:12Speaker 1: and was like, that's the kind of behavior that I
- 45:14Speaker 1: will not tolerate as the owner. of the Arizona Cardinals.
- 45:17Speaker 1: And we're going to nip this in the bud. Somebody
- 45:19Speaker 1: somewhere in this process made it clear that something had
- 45:24Speaker 1: to be done. That's why I look at this and
- 45:27Speaker 1: I raise a real question about how long this is
- 45:29Speaker 1: going to go. Cause like, I think he's a good coach,
- 45:32Speaker 1: but they like, they.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Won nothing with him.
- 45:36Speaker 1: And it's hard for me to believe that nothing had
- 45:42Speaker 1: ever happened in a similar vein like that made you
- 45:46Speaker 1: lose it that much.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Yeah that well so my my read on that and
- 45:51Speaker 2: again I'm just hypothesizing here was the week before Adonai
- 45:57Speaker 2: Mitchell on the Colts did the exact did the exact
- 46:02Speaker 2: same thing and we've all talked to enough players and
- 46:05Speaker 2: coaches like when they do the film study, they're not
- 46:08Speaker 2: just looking at their tape and the tape of the opponents.
- 46:11Speaker 2: They'll put something up on the board and be like,
- 46:13Speaker 2: this situation happened in the dolphins chargers game. Don't let
- 46:18Speaker 2: that happen here.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Right?
- 46:20Speaker 2: So my read on why he went as ballistic as
- 46:23Speaker 2: he did, they talked about it first. They talked about
- 46:26Speaker 2: it that Wednesday, because it's crazy that it keeps happening.
- 46:33Speaker 2: And so again, it is not, I am not excusing
- 46:36Speaker 2: what Jonathan Gannon did at all. It was clearly over
- 46:39Speaker 2: the line. I am just surprised that it led to
- 46:43Speaker 2: that level of punishment because I think DiMarcato would tell
- 46:47Speaker 2: you what he did was... unacceptable yeah like and by
- 46:52Speaker 2: the way i had arizona in a survivor pool i
- 46:55Speaker 2: thought it was a touchdown also so i'm rooting for
- 46:58Speaker 2: that play to be a touchdown but my like just
- 47:01Speaker 2: don't try don't drop the ball before you cross the.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Goal yeah and say that's why i think something happened
- 47:05Speaker 1: there that that's fair was that there was some groundswell
- 47:08Speaker 1: but i would like to make this point i have
- 47:11Speaker 1: a bit of a i don't even know if it's
- 47:12Speaker 1: a hot take but when I see those guys drop
- 47:16Speaker 1: the ball before they get to the goal line, I
- 47:18Speaker 1: remember famously Deshaun Jackson did it once, um, at, uh,
- 47:22Speaker 1: I think it was at Texas stadium. I think it
- 47:23Speaker 1: was at the old house, but, um, famously did that.
- 47:28Speaker 1: And my response when I see that is that's what
- 47:31Speaker 1: you get.
- 47:31Speaker 2: And you're like, what do you mean? That's what you get.
- 47:33Speaker 2: This is what I mean.
- 47:35Speaker 1: When I was a kid That's when cats was first
- 47:38Speaker 1: getting out here for the NFL said it was okay.
- 47:40Speaker 1: And they was out here dancing and doing, you know,
- 47:43Speaker 1: spiking the ball hard and everything else. Right.
- 47:46Speaker 2: And everybody was talking about poor sportsmanship and everything else.
- 47:49Speaker 2: And so what they then wanted was just guys to
- 47:51Speaker 2: drop the ball, right? Guys to toss the ball to
- 47:54Speaker 2: the referee or whatever it is. If you are mine
- 47:57Speaker 2: is on dancing.
- 47:59Speaker 1: If all you thinking about is spiking the ball with
- 48:02Speaker 1: some impact and then busting a move, you will never
- 48:06Speaker 1: drop the ball before the goal line. That's all them
- 48:08Speaker 1: cats out here trying to be humble. trying to be
- 48:11Speaker 1: modest and then when they do that they wind up
- 48:13Speaker 1: giving six points but if you're out there and you
- 48:15Speaker 1: get your groove on you'll get the touchdown every single
- 48:19Speaker 1: time that's what if you don't want them cats to
- 48:21Speaker 1: do that tell everybody you are obligated and required to
- 48:25Speaker 1: spike the ball if jackson dart can get out here
- 48:28Speaker 1: and do some shit when he scored a touchdown you
- 48:30Speaker 1: can do a grok spike or something like that that's
- 48:32Speaker 1: how you fix.
- 48:33Speaker 2: The problem and by the way The glory days were
- 48:38Speaker 2: guys hiding cell phones in the goalposts.
- 48:40Speaker 1: T.O.
- 48:42Speaker 2: With the pom-poms just doing the most. Chad Johnson putting
- 48:47Speaker 2: on the Hall of Fame jacket. T.O. running out to
- 48:50Speaker 2: the star and Rock Marion knocking his ass off. That
- 48:55Speaker 2: stuff was awesome.
- 48:58Speaker 1: T.O. going to the star is a boy had to
- 49:02Speaker 1: be there moment, Jack.
- 49:03Speaker 2: That was incredible. And I think it was George Teague
- 49:06Speaker 2: knocked him off the star.
- 49:07Speaker 1: And what was amazing is that was the second best
- 49:09Speaker 1: thing George Teague ever did to somebody from behind after
- 49:12Speaker 1: the January 1993 Sugar Bowl, where he ran Lamar Thomas
- 49:16Speaker 1: from behind and took the ball from him in one
- 49:18Speaker 1: turn and ran back.
- 49:20Speaker 2: The other way. T.O. on that star because T.O.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Went on the star the first time and then Emmitt
- 49:25Speaker 1: Smith went on the star to spike it and send
- 49:27Speaker 1: a message and then T.O.
- 49:29Speaker 2: It's so funny. T.O.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Had decided he was going again and George Teague had
- 49:33Speaker 1: decided but you not. These were decisions that were made
- 49:37Speaker 1: going in, but you not.
- 49:40Speaker 2: And the full replay of it, T.O. in the sprint
- 49:43Speaker 2: and then George Teague in the sprint. Like, it's like
- 49:46Speaker 2: everyone just sees like T.O. like that. I'm thinking it's like, no, no, no.
- 49:49Speaker 2: You have to watch like the whole, like I would
- 49:51Speaker 2: have watched a 30 for 30 short on just all
- 49:55Speaker 2: of those little decisions and the full on sprint to
- 49:57Speaker 2: knock him off that star. That was badass.
- 49:59Speaker 1: Quiet thing about that moment is the next year. The
- 50:01Speaker 1: next year was the first year that T.O. was in Philadelphia.
- 50:04Speaker 1: So obviously they played another game in Dallas and that
- 50:07Speaker 1: year T.O. was incredible. And he scored a touchdown. And
- 50:11Speaker 1: he stood on the star in the helmet.
- 50:15Speaker 2: In the end zone. In the end zone. I remember that, dude. Dude, T.O.
- 50:18Speaker 2: was the man. He was a little bit of a punk,
- 50:23Speaker 2: but like a smart ass. I was like, I would
- 50:25Speaker 2: be friends with T.O. You know what? Talk your shit.
- 50:28Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 50:29Speaker 1: If you are willing to deal with the fact that T.O.
- 50:32Speaker 1: doesn't get that nobody cares about his story. I bet T.O.
- 50:36Speaker 1: could be really, I bet if T.O. is your boy,
- 50:38Speaker 1: like what they would say about T.O. in locker rooms,
- 50:40Speaker 1: the problem with T.O. wasn't that everybody hated him. The
- 50:43Speaker 1: problem was some people did and the other guys loved him.
- 50:47Speaker 2: And that is called being divisive. Right. Polarizing. Yeah. Little
- 50:52Speaker 2: too popular with a little too many people. Yes.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Or as Dominique always pointed out, no, this is an
- 50:57Speaker 1: example of a lightning rod.
- 50:59Speaker 2: Hell yeah, man. But like remove the locker room. Like,
- 51:03Speaker 2: I just like to hang out with them. Guys seem hilarious.
- 51:08Speaker 2: And third best receiver of all time? There's an argument.
- 51:13Speaker 2: He's up there.
- 51:14Speaker 1: He is an interesting case. I had some other thing
- 51:18Speaker 1: that was an analog to this, and I'll remember it
- 51:20Speaker 1: as some other point. But the great receiver with not
- 51:23Speaker 1: great hands. You know how good you have to be
- 51:24Speaker 1: at everything else to be the great receiver with not
- 51:28Speaker 1: great hands?
- 51:29Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's great. Because, yeah, he would have– Terrible drops,
- 51:32Speaker 2: but then he would catch a slant eight yards over
- 51:35Speaker 2: the middle, have two dudes bounce off of him and
- 51:37Speaker 2: take 60 yards to the house like from a dead stop.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Start up and outrun people. Unbelievable. Outright game changer.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Before we get out of here, because of my time
- 51:48Speaker 1: spent in North Carolina, this Belichick situation has been interesting
- 51:52Speaker 1: to me.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Generally, I did not think it was going.
- 51:55Speaker 1: I'd say that first drive they had in the game.
- 51:57Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this is going to work. They
- 51:58Speaker 1: look like a very well coached operation. Nothing has been
- 52:02Speaker 1: in line with that since your wife is a Clemson grad.
- 52:07Speaker 1: So I think you probably got a chance to watch
- 52:08Speaker 1: them beat the brakes off North Carolina last week. Now,
- 52:11Speaker 1: all the reports are starting to come out. The way
- 52:14Speaker 1: you know it's over has begun to happen. All the leaks,
- 52:18Speaker 1: all the anonymous stuff. Like, you don't normally see reports
- 52:20Speaker 1: like we've seen this week about Carolina until the end
- 52:23Speaker 1: of the year after the guy gets fired.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Everybody's making the case.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Then you've got the, well, Belichick has started buyout talks
- 52:29Speaker 1: if he can find another coaching job or a media
- 52:31Speaker 1: place to land. And I can't tell if that's Belichick
- 52:35Speaker 1: trying to find the job or if that's Carolina trying
- 52:38Speaker 1: to find a job for Belichick.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Everybody is... over it the season isn't even halfway done
- 52:47Speaker 2: well and those statements of denial really really didn't inspire
- 52:50Speaker 2: much confidence it was like i am committed to north
- 52:53Speaker 2: carolina north carolina is committed to bill belichick.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Yes end of statement the athletic by saying the athletic
- 52:59Speaker 1: director who didn't hire him putting.
- 53:01Speaker 2: Out that statement yeah well and that's the thing too
- 53:04Speaker 2: like the the reporting on it is like not just
- 53:08Speaker 2: like an anonymous source close to the program it's like
- 53:12Speaker 2: says a defensive assistant coach i'm like god damn like
- 53:16Speaker 2: that that's not like a low level type of situation
- 53:21Speaker 2: if you if you trust the reporting which i have
- 53:23Speaker 2: no reason not to um my thing on this from
- 53:26Speaker 2: the beginning was that he didn't want the job i
- 53:29Speaker 2: he clearly wanted to be in the nfl Like a
- 53:33Speaker 2: couple of years ago, he interviews for the Falcons job.
- 53:36Speaker 2: We saw that hilarious picture of him in the suit
- 53:38Speaker 2: and tie in line at the Chick-fil-A, like when he
- 53:41Speaker 2: was down there interviewing with Arthur Blank. Then he does
- 53:43Speaker 2: every media job in the world to like stay out there.
- 53:47Speaker 2: And he clearly wanted to be in the NFL. And
- 53:49Speaker 2: by the way, I wanted him to be in the NFL.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Like this whole time, this has felt below him, a
- 53:56Speaker 2: man of his stature. Like if he was going to
- 53:57Speaker 2: keep coaching, like I wanted to see him get another
- 54:00Speaker 2: shot in the NFL. I think if you don't feel
- 54:04Speaker 2: shame and embarrassment, it's like a tremendous quality in a
- 54:08Speaker 2: person if you're like performing on Saturday Night Live. It's
- 54:11Speaker 2: an adaptive advantage. Yeah, absolutely. But how– I want my
- 54:17Speaker 2: like legends to feel some modicum of shame. Like this
- 54:22Speaker 2: is beneath you. Like this is just embarrassing. The 20
- 54:26Speaker 2: something girlfriend who's running your operation and the reporting and
- 54:30Speaker 2: the anonymous sources and getting the doors blown off of you.
- 54:34Speaker 2: And like Michael Jordan shows up to the first game
- 54:37Speaker 2: and he'll never be at another North Carolina football game again.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Why would he? It's just so, it's so humiliating. Like
- 54:45Speaker 2: I just, I hope it ends. I hope, I hope
- 54:47Speaker 2: it ends and we can just forget about this. And
- 54:49Speaker 2: then like 10 years from now, who's the greatest football
- 54:52Speaker 2: coach of all time? Like, debate Bill Belichick's merits and
- 54:55Speaker 2: just like never mention this again. Yeah.
- 54:56Speaker 1: It's like, where, what will the thing be that he's
- 54:59Speaker 1: doing next year? I told somebody, I was talking to
- 55:01Speaker 1: one of my local guys and I'm like, so does
- 55:02Speaker 1: he make it through the season?
- 55:03Speaker 2: He was like, does he make it through the weekend? Jesus.
- 55:07Speaker 1: Like this, I mean, this is a lot to come
- 55:08Speaker 1: out to then have another month and a half of
- 55:11Speaker 1: season left to report that Hulu had been filming a
- 55:14Speaker 1: behind the scenes documentary.
- 55:15Speaker 2: And that has been scrapped. Someone's going to get that footage.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 55:22Speaker 2: And also, there was one of the reports that a
- 55:27Speaker 2: parent was furious. And obviously, maybe a parent is frustrated
- 55:31Speaker 2: that a promise was broken in recruiting. A disgruntled parent
- 55:34Speaker 2: happens at every college football program, sure. But goddamn, I'd
- 55:38Speaker 2: be furious if I sent my son to play for
- 55:40Speaker 2: him and it was going like this.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Well, I think something that he and all his guys,
- 55:44Speaker 1: all these 33rd team, we all are from the NFL thing.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Coaching generally involves a lot of soft skills, but college
- 55:54Speaker 1: coaching really requires a lot of soft skills. Never mind
- 55:58Speaker 1: the fact that I don't think Belichick knows a good
- 55:59Speaker 1: football player when he sees one anymore.
- 56:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:02Speaker 1: But it takes a lot of soft skills to do
- 56:05Speaker 1: this in dealing with players at the ages of 18
- 56:07Speaker 1: to 23 years. or 24 and everything that comes with that.
- 56:12Speaker 2: And I don't know.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Look, Belichick's a man who's a father with sons, right?
- 56:15Speaker 1: So he has dealt with people these ages before. He
- 56:19Speaker 1: knows something about them, to put it like that. I
- 56:21Speaker 1: don't know how exactly it is that he engages or
- 56:25Speaker 1: interacts with his players, but it doesn't sound like it's
- 56:28Speaker 1: going to. Nobody seems to be having a good time.
- 56:31Speaker 1: And so you are a Syracuse grad. You understand what
- 56:35Speaker 1: I'm saying here. When you are a program where I
- 56:38Speaker 1: would say the Syracuse is like a plus or minus
- 56:41Speaker 1: six win program. Carolina is a plus or minus seven
- 56:45Speaker 1: win program. And look, I've seen those people be very
- 56:48Speaker 1: happy with seven wins if they're the right seven wins.
- 56:52Speaker 1: It's got to be a good time, man. They would
- 56:54Speaker 1: like to be excellent, but they'll settle for a good time.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Like right now, look, basketball season has begun. They'll always
- 57:01Speaker 1: go do that. It's got to be fun. And Belichick,
- 57:04Speaker 1: it's only fun if you win. I talked to a
- 57:06Speaker 1: guy that played for the Patriots many years ago and
- 57:08Speaker 1: he played other places and it was his first year
- 57:09Speaker 1: and I was like, how is it? And look, they
- 57:11Speaker 1: won a Super Bowl this year, but he's like, you know,
- 57:14Speaker 1: not the most fun place to play, but you have
- 57:16Speaker 1: a chance to win every week. You're not going to
- 57:19Speaker 1: have a chance to win every week in North Carolina,
- 57:20Speaker 1: no matter what. Like it's very unlikely that's going to happen.
- 57:23Speaker 1: This has to be fun. Nobody's having any fun.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Yeah. It has to be fun. And, or you have
- 57:31Speaker 2: to actually be able to put dudes into the NFL
- 57:34Speaker 2: at a clip that is higher than your wind total
- 57:37Speaker 2: would expect. Because it's like, wow, I came there as
- 57:39Speaker 2: a three-star guy and I left there as a second
- 57:42Speaker 2: round pick. Anyone think that that's where this is going?
- 57:45Speaker 2: You know, like I just, this is just every story
- 57:50Speaker 2: that comes out. is so petty. He still is releasing
- 57:57Speaker 2: statements about the crafts. They can't show Drake May videos
- 58:02Speaker 2: on social media. Patriots scouts can't go to North Carolina.
- 58:07Speaker 2: It's just all... It's so it's so petty and beneath them.
- 58:11Speaker 2: And yes, definitely not fun. And they're losing. It seems
- 58:15Speaker 2: like a guy who didn't want to be there and
- 58:17Speaker 2: then now isn't doing everything to make it work. And
- 58:20Speaker 2: like we've seen it before. One of his guys, Charlie Weiss. Yeah.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Like they have like a little bit of an arrogance
- 58:26Speaker 2: of like, yeah, I'm a great I was a great
- 58:28Speaker 2: coach in the NFL. So obviously at this lower, lesser level,
- 58:31Speaker 2: I will be a super coach. No, man, you got
- 58:34Speaker 2: to do the work.
- 58:36Speaker 1: One of my good friends, who is one of the
- 58:39Speaker 1: biggest Carolina fans I know, hit me and said, people
- 58:44Speaker 1: down here want your boy Pablo to find out some more.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Hell yeah. But I think it gets to something interesting, though.
- 58:50Speaker 1: All that focus over the summer on the girlfriend, and
- 58:55Speaker 1: Carolina obviously did not like that as a program, right?
- 58:59Speaker 2: People found that to be embarrassing.
- 59:01Speaker 1: But it obscured that the real problems were going to
- 59:04Speaker 1: be foundational to football. Like that was, that was all
- 59:09Speaker 1: that talk about Jordan Hudson and nobody was getting college
- 59:13Speaker 1: football in the NFL or not the same.
- 59:16Speaker 2: So I, before I got this gig at FS1, I
- 59:22Speaker 2: made my bones up. All I've ever done is local radio,
- 59:24Speaker 2: Syracuse to Kansas city to Chicago, and then do, you know,
- 59:27Speaker 2: fill in nationally or whatever. But we had, Michael Lombardi
- 59:31Speaker 2: as like, yeah, as like a weekly contributor to, to
- 59:36Speaker 2: the station. And when he got that job, I said
- 59:40Speaker 2: on TV, Michael Lombardi's last job was weekly losing arguments
- 59:46Speaker 2: to me on the radio. Like, like I could not
- 59:52Speaker 2: have been less impressed with like the current, you know,
- 59:56Speaker 2: maybe 15 years ago. I have no idea, but like,
- 59:59Speaker 2: the present tense of Michael was like making like Sopranos
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: analogies and telling old Bill Belichick or Bill Walsh stories.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Like it didn't, it wasn't terribly contemporary or logically consistent.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: So I was not surprised that this has gone very poorly.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I have long wondered what it is that Bill Belichick
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: sees in him. Like all these different people that have
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: given him these different jobs.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: So what, I always assume there's something that I don't
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: know or I don't see or I don't understand. So,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: case in point, Brian Schottenheimer, who seems to be doing
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: a very good job, or I don't want to say
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: very good, but I think he's doing a good job
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: as the head coach with the Cowboys.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm pretty impressed with how their offense has looked
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: without pickings and with some of those offensive line injuries.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: And I've never liked how he runs an offense, right?
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: And I've seen him bounce around everything else. But there's
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: got to be something that people see.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: And I kind of get it.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Like, it's going to be, I mean, he's Marty Schottenheimer's son, right?
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: It's going to be a certain measure of just kind
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: of foundational. It's not going to be flashy, exciting football.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: But there are clearly things that he could do.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Mike Shula.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: Is a great example where I talked to my buddy,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Sean King about it. When Shula got the job with
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: cam working with Carolina, they're like, yeah, we're going to
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: keep this simple, but he's going to make it to
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: where cam doesn't have to do this much. And it's
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: just going to center around his great, what he does. Well,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: getting the ball down the field, we're going to have
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: a strong running game in front of it, but okay.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: You can explain to me what it is that you
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: see in him. If, even though all I see is
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a boring offense with my untrained eye, nobody can explain
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: to me what you think about Lombard.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: Yeah. And by the way, That was what it was
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: with most of those dudes around the Patriots. Like, who
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: left and was, like, awesome? Like, Scott Pioli wasn't. Bill O'Brien.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Matt Patricia, though, he's doing a good job with the
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Ohio State defense. What do you know when you got
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: better players than everybody else?
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Exactly. So, like, you know, Brady and
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Belichick got a ton of people jobs. Like, that's just, that's,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin has no coaching tree. Andy Reid has an
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: incredible coaching tree. You can be a great coach with
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: a ton of success and run the gamut on that one,
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: but it doesn't seem like any of these guys are
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: able to be successful outside of the Belichick-Brady, I guess,
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: craft orbit. Because, yeah, I have no idea why Michael
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: Lombardi keeps getting jobs, but he gets a lot of them.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Guys had a lot of jobs. In many industries. In many,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: many industries. In many, many industries. But that is Danny Parkins.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: He who has vanquished Mike Lombardi in many an argument
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: before Lombardi went on to fame and fortune. Hired this
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: man as your NFL general manager. Check him out on
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: First Things First 5 to 6 Eastern on FS1. Hopefully
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: catch him here at another time where he can tell
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: us whose Heisman Trophy his granddaddy bought in an estate
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: sale or won rolling dice against Jay Berwanger.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Of the University of Chicago. That's right. That's right. I'll
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: give you the full story. You got to come through
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: this spot, man. We'll do an NFL Sunday here soon.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: I'm with it, man. I'll figure out a way with
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: me not having a car. I'll Metro North it. Metro North, baby. Hey, wow.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: Danny's microphone is off. It's all good.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us here.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: On the right time. We do this three times a week.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Ryan Brumley handling everything behind the scenes.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: Thank you, sir.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Hit the voicemail line, 323-596-7767. Anything you want to talk about.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I will tell you, though, I'm surprised. None of y'all
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: got no more stories left about your pops whooping your ass?
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: 323-596-7767.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Remember, follow the right time. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: I'm inclined to believe you are a hater. And we'll
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: talk to you guys in a couple of days.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: Take it easy.
