- 0:00Speaker 1: It's the Yukon Football Coaches Show and welcome you aboard on
- 0:03Speaker 1: Mike Crispino along with Jim Mora. We'll talk to a
- 0:06Speaker 1: couple of the players a little later on in the hour,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Donovan Branch, Lou Hanson the tight end about what the
- 0:13Speaker 1: Huskies were able to accomplish on Saturday against the Duke
- 0:16Speaker 1: Blue Devils, and we'll also get into air Force. That's
- 0:19Speaker 1: the next opponent on Saturday at the Rent as you
- 0:22Speaker 1: contries to finish off an unbeaten slate at home this
- 0:25Speaker 1: season at six and zero.
- 0:26Speaker 2: But coach got to begin with Duke. The thing that
- 0:30Speaker 2: stood out.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Among many things was the resilience that Yukon showed five
- 0:36Speaker 1: deficits in one game. You were down once in the
- 0:40Speaker 1: fourth quarter, twice in the third quarter, once right away
- 0:43Speaker 1: off the top of the first and once in the second.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I mean five bouncebacks by a football team. That's not easy.
- 0:51Speaker 3: No, it's not easy. But I think it says a
- 0:54Speaker 3: couple of things, Mike. It says that this team has
- 0:57Speaker 3: confidence in their ability to adversity and they have resilience.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I think it says a lot about the energy that
- 1:04Speaker 3: we were able to We were able to extract from
- 1:09Speaker 3: the great crowd. You know, it just always felt alive
- 1:13Speaker 3: in there. It never felt dead, and I think that
- 1:16Speaker 3: had an effect on our players, and you know, it
- 1:20Speaker 3: never you know, the fact that it never got to
- 1:23Speaker 3: a two score game was important. And I know I'm
- 1:26Speaker 3: sure that at times people get frustrated when I kick
- 1:29Speaker 3: field goals because.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Everyone wants to go for it all the time.
- 1:32Speaker 3: But one of the things I try to do is
- 1:33Speaker 3: think a couple series ahead, you know, and sometimes play
- 1:37Speaker 3: Devil's advocate. Okay, okay, if we go for it here
- 1:40Speaker 3: and we don't make it and they score, now we're
- 1:42Speaker 3: down x amount, how does that change the rest of
- 1:46Speaker 3: the game. And so just being able to stay in
- 1:50Speaker 3: it is so important. And having the confidence that we
- 1:54Speaker 3: have in our ability to move the ball and score
- 1:57Speaker 3: in critical situations because we've been able to do it
- 1:59Speaker 3: through the U is critical in.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Our decision making.
- 2:02Speaker 3: So, but the resilience of our players, the confidence of
- 2:05Speaker 3: our players, and then the energy created by the crowd.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I think all three of the three of those factors
- 2:10Speaker 3: just really helped us.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a perfect example of having an offense that's
- 2:14Speaker 1: productive like yours is scoring in the mid thirties pretty
- 2:19Speaker 1: much every game. I felt like going in you needed
- 2:22Speaker 1: to score at least thirty five to beat.
- 2:24Speaker 2: This team because they're a very good offensive team.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Having Joe Finnano with the kind of year he's having
- 2:30Speaker 1: in Skyler Bell and these playmakers on offense, does that
- 2:33Speaker 1: give you a little bit of a chance to breathe
- 2:36Speaker 1: easy somewhat when.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Things aren't going your way.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I mean always going to look over and go, well,
- 2:41Speaker 1: I know those guys are going to figure out something.
- 2:44Speaker 1: But I mean I would think, as I'm the head coach,
- 2:46Speaker 1: I would say, Okay.
- 2:47Speaker 2: We got a shot, we got our guys, we're gonna score.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Well. I always feel that.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I always feel like, you know, hey, we have a shot.
- 2:54Speaker 4: We're in it.
- 2:55Speaker 3: You know we're going to compete because that's built into
- 2:58Speaker 3: our team. But come on, Mike, I don't even know
- 3:02Speaker 3: if I breathe easy until I'm in the locker room.
- 3:05Speaker 3: You know, the game is like, you know, ten minutes
- 3:09Speaker 3: over before I can really kind.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Of breathe easy. So yeah, I confidence, yes, breathe easy. No. Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I don't ever ask you this, but I'm gonna ask
- 3:21Speaker 1: you this time. When you got in the locker room
- 3:23Speaker 1: after that game, and obviously the crowd came out, was
- 3:26Speaker 1: celebrating with the team, et cetera. Now you get a
- 3:28Speaker 1: few minutes, you go into the locker room, what's the
- 3:31Speaker 1: first thing you addressed with your team? What was the
- 3:33Speaker 1: first thing you basically said to him after what was
- 3:37Speaker 1: a really emotional day and night.
- 3:40Speaker 3: So I missed the whole crowd on the field. I
- 3:43Speaker 3: didn't even know they rushed the field. I typically when
- 3:46Speaker 3: the game's over, you know, I love, you know, meeting
- 3:49Speaker 3: an opponent, the posing head coach, shaking his hand, and
- 3:52Speaker 3: then I try to get to the locker room as
- 3:53Speaker 3: fast as I can because I like to be in
- 3:56Speaker 3: there before the players come in so I can shake
- 3:58Speaker 3: all their hands when they come off the field. Just
- 4:00Speaker 3: always been something I've enjoyed doing. So I'm up in
- 4:03Speaker 3: the locker room and I like, where's our football team?
- 4:07Speaker 4: You know?
- 4:08Speaker 3: And I kind of look out of the tunnel and
- 4:10Speaker 3: I go, oh my god, they stormed the field.
- 4:12Speaker 4: I missed it. But at that point I was like,
- 4:14Speaker 4: you know what, I'm gonna just sit in here.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I'm gonna take a couple of breaths, and I'm gonna
- 4:18Speaker 3: let the players enjoy having some fun with their fellow students,
- 4:22Speaker 3: and David Bennett came in and we were able to
- 4:25Speaker 3: have a nice conversation and you know, just kind of
- 4:28Speaker 3: we don't get to do that a lot after game
- 4:30Speaker 3: because it's so chaotic, that we got to kind of
- 4:32Speaker 3: talk about the game. And then as the players came in,
- 4:34Speaker 3: you know, greet him. And then the first thing is, uh,
- 4:38Speaker 3: you know, we have a we have a we have
- 4:41Speaker 3: a saying on our on our wall there up in
- 4:44Speaker 3: the locker room, and I stole it from Danny Hurly. Okay,
- 4:47Speaker 3: I walked into the basketball building once and he said
- 4:51Speaker 3: relentless competitive effort. And that's one of Danny's core principles,
- 4:56Speaker 3: relentless competitive effort.
- 4:57Speaker 4: And so I plagiarized. I stole it. No, and we haven't.
- 5:02Speaker 4: We haven't.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Right up on the you know, kind of the top
- 5:04Speaker 3: of our locker room, one of the things is relentless
- 5:07Speaker 3: competitive effort.
- 5:08Speaker 4: And I just pointed to that.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I said, read that, and they said that's really I said, well,
- 5:12Speaker 3: how do we win that this? I said something like,
- 5:14Speaker 3: how do we win this game? I said, look at
- 5:15Speaker 3: that right there, and they said relentless competitive effort. I said,
- 5:18Speaker 3: your damn right, and then that was kind of then
- 5:20Speaker 3: they you know, they start going crazy.
- 5:22Speaker 4: It was awesome.
- 5:24Speaker 3: So I got to give Danny a lot of credit
- 5:25Speaker 3: from my post game well, hell, I got to give
- 5:27Speaker 3: Danny and Gino a lot of credit for what they
- 5:30Speaker 3: did pregame to help get that place full. And then
- 5:33Speaker 3: I got to give Danny hell a lot of credit
- 5:35Speaker 3: for giving me a postgame talk.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Well, he is, he's a football fan.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I could I watched a couple of football games with
- 5:45Speaker 1: him while he's having practice, which is funny because on
- 5:48Speaker 1: a Sunday he's watching the Bengals and he's a huge
- 5:50Speaker 1: football fan. Yeah, it's great to have that support, no
- 5:53Speaker 1: question about it. You won the game on the last
- 5:57Speaker 1: play defensively, and that's I think as exciting as it gets. Right,
- 6:02Speaker 1: your defense getting pushed up against the wall, basically they're
- 6:05Speaker 1: driving the football. They're putting this thing in danger right there.
- 6:09Speaker 1: All they need is a field goal to tie this thing,
- 6:12Speaker 1: to win it with a defensive play boy, that that's exhilarating,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I think for the fans who were there that day.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know what I think settle us down
- 6:23Speaker 3: a little bit defensively was the fact that Joe got
- 6:26Speaker 3: that two point conversion and make it a field goal
- 6:28Speaker 3: to tie, and it gave us a chance to play
- 6:31Speaker 3: the game a little bit differently on defense, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 3: where we weren't trying to defend a field goal to win,
- 6:37Speaker 3: but a field goal to tie.
- 6:39Speaker 4: I think that.
- 6:42Speaker 3: It was a result of a lot of work by
- 6:44Speaker 3: our defensive players and staff in terms of figuring out
- 6:48Speaker 3: how we can be better in the two minute situation
- 6:51Speaker 3: and going through the experiences that we've gone through this
- 6:53Speaker 3: year in the two minute situations, at the end of games,
- 6:56Speaker 3: the end of halves, you know, even some of the
- 6:58Speaker 3: stuff that's happened in the overt times has forced us
- 7:02Speaker 3: to really look inside and.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Understand why we'd.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Struggled in those situations, and then our players really taken
- 7:09Speaker 3: ownership of it. I think that helped us tremendously On Saturday,
- 7:14Speaker 3: when we got in that situation again, there was a
- 7:16Speaker 3: different level of confidence.
- 7:17Speaker 2: It was a real high point for Yukon this year.
- 7:20Speaker 2: They go seven and three.
- 7:21Speaker 1: We're going to talk a little bit about the emotion
- 7:23Speaker 1: of playing at home with the lead or the deficit,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and some of the guys who made it happen. Takeaways
- 7:31Speaker 1: another category of Yukon's starting to excel in where with
- 7:34Speaker 1: Jim Moore, We're back with more the Yukon Football Coaches
